Finding the origin of the views an article has.
Is there any website or application that can be used to find what city or country the views an article has come from, or at least the IPs of said views? The closest thing I could find was this, but unfortunately it does not tell where the visits come from. Disambiguation page formatting
Hi, should the disambiguation page look like this? or this? As you can see, the first example uses == (2nd level heading) to group the entries while the second one uses (bold) to group the entries. So which one is correct? Hz. tiang 04:01, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

- Both are actually "correct", the first one uses section headings because there is a large number of articles being listed and it would be very impractical to have to scroll through the whole page looking for a specific header, which is the reason why articles use section headings. Old Japanese Medical Images and Copyright Settings for Public Domain
I have uploaded a few very old photos related to Japanese medical works. Some of these images have warning notices on them. I am not sure how to fix these. All the images I have uploaded are in the public domain. They are all from books written much older then 100 years ago.

I need help to know what I need to change so the images in question do not get deleted from the wiki.

- You need to provide evidence that the images are in the public domain. You say "All the images I have uploaded are in the public domain", but you have not provided evidence of it. The books themselves are out of copyright – but do you have evidence that the images themselves are also out of copyright? My guess is that you copied them from 町の按摩さん.com. Maybe that site has a copyright release statement, but I can't read Japanese so I can't tell. Maproom (talk) 10:03, 31 March 2013 (UTC)
- I looked at File:Ishinpō1.jpg. Your description, "A section from one of the 30 scrolls of the Ishinpō", is not enough to show that the scroll is old enough to be in the public domain. Is this scroll an original dating from 984 AD, or a later copy? Provided that the scroll itself is sufficiently old, I don't think it matters when the book was published or whether the images were uploaded to a blog site. Making a faithful copy of a 2-D object such as an [unrolled] scroll is not a creative enough act to give anyone a new copyright. I find it odd that if I scan an old document, then spend an hour digitally removing the wormholes and other imperfections, I have no copyright in the product of my labour; but if I point my digital camera at someone and click the button, I immediately hold a copyright in the image. Yes that scroll was written in 984 A.D. Again I have no idea where more copyright info is to be provided. When I edit an image it is very unclear how to provide that info. Again, all the images I am uploading are 100s of years old. Yea I will get back to this after Easter and ask for more detailed instructions. Wikipedia only has articles about people that have been discussed in detail in independent reliable sources - you can read more about this at WP:42. - I cannot guess where the article is, or who the guy is, which makes it hard for me to understand your question. I think that if a Wikipedia article says that someone is head of a company, it ought to say what company. A statement in a Wikipedia article that a guy has been convicted of threats of violence would be accepted only if there is a reliable reference for it; what the guy wants would not be relevant. If you don't want this guy to know that it's you writing about him, then you should register an account with Wikipedia: the source of registered accounts cannot be traced, but IP addresses can often be traced to regions or even to individual buildings. For some reason, Indigenous peoples is displaying with the sentence "please don't fall for the crap on this page" in the lead paragraph--but the wiki text doesn't show this comment when I went in to edit it out. - Wikipedia sends plain text mails and not html mails. There are good reasons for that. A plain text mail can only contain a plain text url with no link formatting. If the url is clickable for you then it is your mail software which tries to indentify url's in plain text and make them work as links. Your mail software probably guesses that url's end at parentheses so it shortens http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kevin_Ware_(basketball)&diff=0&oldid=548058195 to http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kevin_Ware. Using Text from or Own Organization's Web Page
Hello,
The Sophia Smith Collection, a women's history archive, would like to create articles on Wikipedia about the notable women whose papers reside in our collection. We wanted to do this by using the text from our finding aids - which we own the copyright to - as text for the article.
However, when we recently attempted to save an article on Dorothy Hamilton Brush, we were told we could not copy-paste information from other website. We understand and respect the need for articles to be original. However, since we own the copyright information to the text that we have copy-pasted, we were wondering if we could make it clear in some way that we are not plagiarizing, but publishing our own original information.

- I'll note that this is an apparently scholarly, curated collection of documents and photos in support of women's studies at Smith College, which, on spec, would be considered a reliable source, IMO. - I thoroughly agree on the issue of the collection's websites being reliable sources. Archivists at my university have the authority to give permissions and release rights; if Smith College's archivists have the same authority, I expect that we would be satisfied with something like "The people using accounts ___, ___, and ___, have the authority to copy content from any of our web pages and release them under CC-by-sa-3.0 and GFDL". - I think this would be an ideal case for a template specific to this organisation acknowledging the license pursuant to which the material is being released. If the permission is communicated to OTRS we will review it quickly to avoid any copyvio problems. First time edit/problem with <ref> in article
From "Killing of Travis Alexander," article states Jodi and Travis started dating in February of 2007, Jodi moved to Mesa Arizona. Factually speaking, and a key piece of information in the murder trial is that she did not move to Mesa until after they broke up.
As a first time editor on wiki, I added 'After the two broke up on June 29, 2007, Arias moved to Mesa, Arizona. Wiki comes back with Cite error: A set of <ref> tags are missing the closing </ref>; see the help page. Can u advise where I put <ref>??

Nacho Cano
I am the personal assistant for Nacho Cano of Spanish pop music band Mecano. We are trying to update his article and have been thwarted several times because we lack references. Is there a way to reference things in his article that are from interviews I've had with him or are things that are not in published articles elsewhere? The article has gone through various phases of authenticity and we would both like to have a valid and verifiable article on Wikipedia. I have been working on a stub article about Stanley Spencer (aeronaut). An editor on the Humanities Refdesk very kindly found a reference for me, from an old magazine at the National Motor Museum and transcribed the text onto a Userpage - User:Tevildo/MotoringIllustrated. - First, understand that a link is not required for a published work; such a link is considered a convenience. You cannot use another Wikipedia page, especially a user page as a source. I have asked if it is appropriate to have a user created navigational box for user sub-pages like I have right now (see my sandbox for all pages that I am working on) and I would love to have a navigational box for these sub-pages on my user tag on Wikipedia to use for the pages that I, or anyone, is working on? Is this okay by Wikipedia standards? The replier said that there wouldn't be any objections, but, I would like an Administrations concise approval or denial of this request. - As Huon (talk · contribs) explained, this is fine, provided you create the navbox as a subpage of your user page. This is an allowed use of your user space, as explained at WP:UPYES. You do not need administrator approval. For example, you could create User:Sundogs/My navbox and then use it as
{{User:Sundogs/My navbox}}

Question about the Novel Clean Up tag
I was on The Bourne Identity (novel) and saw the clean up tag for a novel. I stated in the talk page as I am now on this for general purposes, I have read the book many times over and came back to Wikipedia and started to look around and I saw The Bourne Identity novel has this clean up tag for a novel stating it is unclear for the reader about the plot or novel. As stated in the talk page, the plot is perfectly find and accurate and best summarize the book after re-reading the book for the upteen time. So, basically saying, may I remove the clean up tag? Toledo Mud Hens
I was reading the article about former players for the Toledo Mud Hens. I am positive that my grandfather, Kenny Grimes, brother of Ray and Roy, cousin of Oscar, and relative of coach, Burleigh, played for the Mud Hens. I was looking to see what position he played but can't seem to find any info. I know he was injured and eventually had to quit. - A Google search finds three entries one of which indicates he played short stop. The results are to articles at newspaperarchive.com which are by subscription. Not all people see the same text when they use Google so the shortened entry says "Kenny Grimes at short" and cuts off there, going on to other text. - It doesn't show up because "visual effects" isn't part of the infobox film template. You can't just add any random field to an infobox. It has to be in the original template as an available field first. If you'd like it added to the template, the place to take up that discussion would be at Template talk:Infobox film. But all I get is a picture box with the text for a link to the image, it is not actually displaying the image, what am I doing wrong?

- You have to use the exact name of the file when placing it in an article, the same capitalisation, punctuation, etc. The image file's name is "John McAslan.jpg", not "R_121128_press.jpg". Roger (talk) 11:11, 2 April 2013 (UTC)

What is the best way to get my info on wikipedia so that it comes up when people search Polga? - Well, the first thing is your username is promotional. Since you are closely related to the subject, any edits made on that "page/article" would be a conflict of interest, which requires special attention for involved editors. - Wikipedia does not have anywhere in its purposes helping you get your product's name out: indeed, that would be seen as promotional, and specifically excluded. Is there any way other than Chick skin to have a Wikipedia article take up the whole page width?
So today this message popped up "You are using the Chick skin, which is being removed beginning on April 15, 2013. More information." I really enjoy chick skin, and use it on all my wiki sites. The main reason is that I find it much simpler to read articles, when the text takes up the width of the entire page. I don't like having reading space wasted with menus and other distractions.
I also greatly enlarge the font, which creates problems with menus bleeding into article space.
IS there any way to have articles take up the entire width of the page on one of the approved skins- Vector, MonoBook, Modern and Cologne Blue?--Gary123 (talk) 16:16, 2 April 2013 (UTC)

Replacing a .jpeg image with a .svg file
Recently, my attention was drawn to Category:Images_that_should_be_in_SVG_format, and I decided to help out. I converted a few images to svg, but when I went to upload them (file page-> file history -> upload a new version of this file-> choose file -> upload image) I received the error message: "File extension ".jpeg" does not match the detected MIME type of the file (image/svg+xml).". I tried editing the name of the file to xyz.svg instead of xyz.jpeg, but it wouldn't let me. Extremely long list in an article
The list of notable alumni at Hollywood High School is extremely long (the actual length, not the amount of names); you'll see that it's more than twice as long as the rest of the entire article. (I'll bet it's Wikipedia's longest notable alumni list for a high school article.) I assume if it were a table, it would just need to be collapsed (with a show/hide button). - Hollywood High is one of the most "famous" high schools in the country, but my request has nothing to do with the the names/content of the alumni list; it's solely about the length of the list; it's way too long, particularly in relation to the length of the rest of the article. - I know that extremely long alumni lists for large universities, for example, simpy redirect to their own articles with something like "Main article: List of ABC University alumni" in its place. But again, those are lists, not tables; and they usually are extremely long. I don't think a high school alumni list should have its own article. - Thanks for all the input. I took the guidance of the admin (Yunshui) and just spent a couple hours creating the collapsible table after marking this thread as resolved. So I just saw the additional comments. Leaving the "household" names in the article and then having a separate list elsewhere seems unnecessary and inconvenient, considering the rest of the article has so little content. And having a separate article where the list would be two or three times the length of the high school article itself doesn't seem as logical as simply having the collapsible table so that all content can be in one article. Again, this is an odd situation since there are probably very few (or no) other high schools that have as many notable alumni as this one. Obviously, some of the alumni are far more prominent than others, but all of them have their own articles and are therefore assumed [[WP:NOTE|notable]). Perhaps there are a couple whose notability might be challenged (as is the case with any long list of people), but I did a quick check of each article and did remove a couple bogus listings. - You may not use that account with somebody else's name, but you are welcome to create your own account either with your own name or another name you choose, provided it meets the requirements in WP:USERNAME.
- You may put information about yourself as a Wikipedia editor on your user page, but it's not recommended to try and write an article there.

Walking distance
A number of articles state that various landmarks 'are within walking distance' of various stations, for example Benhilton church is within walking distance of Sutton Common railway station. Is there a hard and fast rule of what 'walking distance' curtails? My idea of walking distance is from my house in North Cheam to the Aldi in Selsdon.--Launchballer 10:31, 3 April 2013 (UTC)
- I used to do my shopping in North Cheam, many years ago... AFAIK, there's no offical measure for "walking distance", it's highly subjective. We shouldn't really be using it; it would be far better to state "landmark x is 700 yards (640 metres) from railway station y", if such a precise measurement can be sourced. HMS Waterwitch 1892
Not sure if you can help. HMS Waterwitch 1892 has been edited by persons unknown. It is major and has deleted much of context related to ships early history and to her career. Obviously if I knew who the person was I could discuss via TALK but because they do not have a logon name it is not possible. Any suggestions? I have left a message on the HMS Waterwitch TALK hoping they will correspond.

- It's still possible to communicate with IP editors via their talkpages (User talk:2.101.37.82 in this case); I'd suggest leaving a message there asking him to come back to the article talkpage and discuss the matter - he's already left some comments. Whilst a lot of cited content was removed, it looks as though this editor was genuinely trying to make improvements by removing what he saw as a lot of extraneous material. The focus now should be on whether any of that material merits restoration; talk it through and see if you can't reach a compromise. If you're struggling, you might want to ask for a third opinion or even take it to dispute resolution - hopefully, though, simple discussion will suffice. Yunshui 雲水 13:20, 3 April 2013 (UTC)
I expect he has reverted the article to his (or her) original version. I agree it was not vandalism but a difference of what should be in the article. I tried to put in the historical context of the vessel; she was one of the first ocean going steam yachts and she was 13 years old when the navy purchased her. The history of the ship during the survey career has also been taken out and a postcard cited as source data and even the web link to this is missing. I cannot really be bothered getting into discussions with whoever. I did look for his talk page but could not find it. The work I put in was to dispel the myth (published in the original article)that the ship was the White Ladye and he seems to have accepted that this is the case so some good came out of it. Subject deletion

- If you sincerely believe that what you had added was neutral then I am afraid that you are very much mistaken - it read like a company website, which is hardly surprising seeing that large chunks were in fact copied directly from Bartech's website. It's not copywrite infringement because I was also the writer of that press release. - Statements like "has led the industry for over 35 years", "Bartech improves clients’ market position through greater quality, efficiency, cost savings and transparency" and "That vision and ambition have made Bartech into a trusted global provider and manager of large-scale teams of skilled contingent professionals", among others, are all obviously promotional in tone. They might be allowed to stand if third party, independent and reliable sources had made them, but are unacceptable as they stand. The Manpower Inc. article has one unreferenced claim that may be considered propotional (about its Employment Outlook Survey) and even that is tagged as "citation needed". - In one word - no. Have you read 'my first article'? You need to find sources (like newspapers) that talk about the company, and it has to be neutrally written. Based on your comment on the talk page before I deleted the article, you work for the company so this is likely to be difficult for you. It might be best to consider creating a short stub only referencing independent sources first of all. As for the current draft - due to the copyright violations it needs to be deleted. Understanding of articles
Hi. I was just wondering if there was a way that people who write these articles could write them in lay-mans terms. I can tell they are full of information, but i lose my head when I'm trying to understand what it is I am reading. So if people could please start taking into consideration the "HOW" of how to write their articles then I think Wikipedia could be a lot more useful to people from ALL blocks of life. Thank-you.

- You are right, but there is probably no way to achieve this. Wikipedia is edited by thousands and thousands of people, some of whom are good at writing clear jargon-free text, and others who are not. Also, many articles are on subjects which are rather specialised, and it is very difficult (and possibly unhelpful) to write them in a way that the non-specialist can understand - I would hope that an article which was an overview of a subject would be clearer, but if you're describing a very specialised and details aspect of a field, it might make the article very long and repetitive to explain every time in layman's language, rather than linking other articles.
- But more can probably be done, particularly in making the lede of articles more approachable. You are welcome to simplify articles if you think you can, and you are not losing anything important from an article. --ColinFine (talk) 17:54, 3 April 2013 (UTC)
Please help!
I tagged this article: GNU C-Graph for CSD and now one of the two creating users (who I have reason to believe are the same person) is accusing me of having some sort of agenda. The two users are clearly affiliated with the company, the usernames are User talk:Visionat, User talk:Adriennegt, and IP 72.252.229.15. All three appear to be the same person, the creator of the software, Adrienne Gaye Thompson, as listed on the article itself. "adriennegt" is clear enough and "visionat" is the word "vision" followed by the initials of her first and last names. The IP is assumed to be associated since those three are the only contributors to the article. The accusations against me can be found at Talk:GNU C-Graph and User talk:Visionat. Will someone please explain (reiterate) to this user what COI is and why their article is not acceptable? Please help Gold Standard 18:36, 3 April 2013 (UTC)

- This doesn't fit neetly into WP:CSD#G11 but there's no hope of it getting through AFD. I agree that the users are all likely the author - note the signature here. Considering that, and the fact that large parts are about accusations of theft and racism, speedy deletion seems then speedy deletion via G11 seems the best option to me. Why are women being moved into a women's sub catgory but therre s no men only category
Novelists categories Category:Scottish women poets and Category:Scottish women novelists seem to be created so that the main categories are men only . What message is that supposed to give out to schoolchildren using wikipedia - novelist = male? Surely Wikipedia isn't really meant to that sexist? --FDent (talk) 19:56, 3 April 2013 (UTC)
- Historically, many fields have been men-only. Women partaking in these fields are cause for separate categorization. When men partake in historically women-only fields (though there are few), they are cause for separate categorization, Category:Male ballet dancers for instance. - The article itself was never up for review - due to an incorrectly closed reference tag the review request template was never added and as of such the article was stuck in the limbo (Or rather: never waiting to be reviewed).
