Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy is the sequel to the video game Lego Star Wars: The Video Game. As the title suggests, it covers the Original Trilogy. The game was released on September 11, 2006 in Europe (although some stores were selling copies as early as the 8th)[1] and September 12, 2006 in the United States. This was the same day that the original, unaltered theatrical editions of the original trilogy were released on DVD.
Background information
The game was simultaneously released for the PC, Xbox, GameCube, PlayStation 2, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, PlayStation Portable and Xbox 360. The game was published by LucasArts/TT Games in the US and by Activision in Europe. The game is rated E10+ for Ages 10 and up by the ESRB for Cartoon Violence and Crude Humor,[2] and 3+ by the PEGI.
All characters, vehicles, etc. are made out of Lego bricks. Like its predecessor, this game presents a humorous view of the Star Wars universe, and re-tells some of the original trilogy's most famous moments through cut-scenes that feature no dialogue whatsoever.
The ability to "create" new Lego Star Wars characters is a new feature in the game, allowing the player to mix multiple character parts, which also automatically creates a name for the new character (such as a Master Leia, Boba Skywalker or Darth 3PO). Using a saved game from the previous Lego Star Wars games (PS2, Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, and Windows platforms) allows the player to transfer the prequel characters into the Original Trilogy, although prequel characters cannot be customized (save for a few select pieces).
The difficulty adjusts to suit the player. This "adaptive difficulty" function is a feature that has been implemented by Traveller's Tales as a response to the relative ease in which gamers completed the first game. This feature can be manually turned on or off in the extras menu. [3]
Time setting
The game starts at the beginning of A New Hope, and is completed at the end of Return of the Jedi, covering a time space of four years in the Star Wars universe, with the first mission being on the Tantive IV and the final mission being the space segment of the Battle of Endor.
Characters
Playable characters are from the Original Trilogy of the Star Wars saga (Episodes IV, V, and VI), including Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Ben Kenobi, Chewbacca, Boba Fett, Princess Leia, C-3PO, R2-D2, Darth Vader, and Emperor Palpatine. If a player has a saved game from Lego Star Wars: The Video Game, then 46 of the characters from the last game will be available, excluding those unlocked in the bonus level (Darth Vader, Princess Leia, Stormtrooper, and Rebel Trooper) and C-3PO, R2-D2, Yoda, Chewbacca, Darth Sidious, and Gonk Droid, as they are characters that also appear in the Original Trilogy time frame, and must be unlocked conventionally. However, this ability must be purchased for 250,000 studs first. When a player unlocks a character from the standard game, they also unlock its Lego Bricks which can be used to make custom characters. According to LucasArts, this adds up to over 1,000,000 character combinations.
During E3 2006, it was confirmed that 50 characters will be unlocked by playing through story mode. The rest have to be purchased using studs, the game's currency. All of these characters can be used to create a custom character which is made up of a combination of nine pieces (hat, head, body, cape, arms, hands, weapon, hip and legs). Some characters have a limited amount of pieces usable in Customization Mode, such as those with an irregular head (such as Yoda or Greedo). In those cases, the character cannot wear a hat or helmet.
Main characters
The main characters in the game can be obtainable via playing story mode or buying them at the Mos Eisley Cantina. There are also codes one can enter at the Mos Eisley Cantina, which unlock characters for purchase. The full list is shown below.

Custom characters
The last two characters in the character selection screen are custom characters that can be assembled in the Mos Eisley Cantina. Although there is a large amount of pieces avaiable for customizing a character, not every character's body, arms, weapon, head, or hat is usable; for example, there is no Darth Vader body or head—only his helmet; also, there are no axes, spears, dual blasters, double-bladed lightsabers, or rifle blasters. The cape option doesn't encompass backpacks, and as such, there are no rocket packs. A character's head or hat and what they have in their hand dictates their powers, with a few exceptions—using the Emperor's head will not give the character Force Lightning and giving them Darth Vader's helmet may not give them the ability to open Storm Trooper Doors, for example.
Extra characters
Many more characters are obtainable from two extras the player can buy: Extra Toggle for 30,000 studs, and Use Old Save for 250,000 studs.
Extra Toggle
Extra Toggle simply means when one plays a level in Free Play mode, characters unobtainable by other means are playable. However, when Old Save characters are used, custom characters and vehicles are not available for playability in the cantina. There are several known characters:
- Womp Rat: The rats found in various places in Episode IV, Chapter 2: Through the Jundland Wastes and Episode IV, Chapter 3: Mos Eisley Spaceport that give hearts when killed. The Womp Rat has no attack powers but moves faster than all other characters. Also the Womp Rat is not attacked by normal enemies.
- Droids 1-4: R1-G4, Treadwell Droid, ASP Droid, Generic Droid: The droids that are found in the Jawas' sandcrawler.
- Mouse Droid: The small droids with cameras found in Episode IV, Chapter 4: Rescue the Princess, Episode IV, Chapter 5: Death Star Escape and Episode VI, Chapter 5: Jedi Destiny. They are very fast but have no attack abilities (unless you have the "self-destruct cheat on). The Mouse Droid, like the Womp Rat, is not attacked by normal enemies.
- Han Solo (frozen in Carbonite): Han Solo, during his state in which he is frozen in carbonite. This character is very similar to the Gonk droid because it cannot attack and moves slowly.
- Skeleton: Found in Episode IV, Chapter 2: Through the Jundland Wastes, Episode IV, Chapter 4: Rescue The Princess and in Episode V, Chapter 2: Escape From Echo Base This character is very similar to Bib Fortuna and Lobot. It attacks by detaching his arms and legs to use as weapons.
- Imperial Engineer: Engineers for the Galactic Empire. They are useful when it comes to combat and grappling, and they can open stormtrooper doors.
- Rebel Engineer: Engineers for the Rebel Alliance. They are useful for combat and grappling.
- Scout Trooper: A form of Stormtroopers employed to protect the shield generator on Endor. They are useful for opening stormtrooper doors.
- AT-AT engineer: A form of Stormtroopers who ride in AT-ATs. They carry a blaster to defend themselves.
Use Old Save
In order to use this feature, the Lego Star Wars save game must be present on the same memory card as is being used for Lego Star Wars II. If using a PC, Lego Star Wars must be installed in its default location, or else its save game folder must be copied into Lego Star Wars II's save game folder for it to be found.
It is unclear if "Use Old Save" works when the Xbox 360 is used in compatibility mode to play the first Lego Star Wars game.
The many characters exclusive to Lego Star Wars: The Video Game, including Jango Fett, General Grievous, Count Dooku, Darth Maul, and many more, are added to the character select screen. However, high-jumps are cut off, so General Grievous and Grievous' Bodyguard fall into the same class as Imperial Guard and Gamorrean Guard. Jar-Jar Binks is made useless from these changes, and falls along similar lines with Chancellor Palpatine and the Imperial Spy. Also, General Grievous and his bodyguard are less useful in this mode, as they can't pull levers or build with Lego bricks, (like 4-LOM or IG-88), and are also unable to ride vehicles. Lastly, Jango Fett's jetpack is changed to the same standards as Boba Fett's (now Jango can go over pits but can't go for an infinite time). Also, Jango Fett can now throw detonators and have access to Bounty Hunter areas. The main bulk of other characters are unchanged, except for all old Force users such as Qui-Gon Jinn, Mace Windu, and Ki-Adi-Mundi, who can perform Jedi Mind Trick and all the new abilities to build with bricks, pull levers, ride vehicles and wear disguises.
Vehicles
Players can jump into vehicles and move about the levels with them. Unlike the original game, in which vehicles were on rails, vehicles are able to move freely wherever the player wants. This was added as a response to the consensus of fans who disliked the vehicle levels from the original. The player's health hearts are replaced with metallic hearts, representing the health of the vehicle. If the vehicle's health is depleted when not in a vehicle-only stage, the character driving it will lose studs and be ejected; however, no matter how much damage a vehicles sustains, it will survive. Once a mini-kit set is completed, the player can drive that vehicle and use it in the "Minikit Bonus" level unlocked after finishing an episode's story with the correct number of gold bricks (see below) to build it.
Starships can collect Proton Torpedoes, and Snowspeeders can be able to tow bombs to help the player complete the level. For example, the Millennium Falcon might shoot an asteroid and uncover a proton torpedo. If a huge asteroid comes along that the Millennium Falcon cannot destroy with blasters, the proton torpedo may be used to destroy it.
After a player collects all 180 minikits found in the game, they are granted Boba Fett's Slave I.
Unlockable in Story Mode:

- Y-wing
- Snowspeeder
- Millennium Falcon
Available to buy in the Mos Eisley Cantina:
- TIE Fighter
- TIE Interceptor
- TIE Fighter (Darth Vader)
- TIE Bomber

Levels
Just like in the first game where levels were accessed by entering doors in Dexter's Diner, levels in this game are accessed in the Mos Eisley Cantina. As opposed to Dexter from the first game, Wuher allows the player to purchase characters, hints, and extras. The player is also able to customize characters, save them, and then use them in Free Play Mode, and go outside for street fights.

Extras
Extras are small features that can be turned on and off. Some function as cheats, like "Invincibility", others are just novelties. Unlike the first Lego Star Wars, players must earn the ability to buy extras by collecting red power bricks.
- Invincibility: Makes characters resistant to enemy attacks. If a player dies by falling off of a ledge, no studs are lost.
- Fertilizer: Causes animals to produce fertilizer when the special button is pressed.
- Chewbacca w/ C-3PO on back: Chewbacca will carry a partially assembled C-3PO on his back, like in The Empire Strikes Back.
- Tow Death Star: Turns the towable mines in Vehicle levels into tiny Death Stars.
- Tractor Beam: Vehicles can trap enemies in a tractor beam trailing behind them.
- Daisy Chains: Turns grappling hook rope into a chain of flowers.
- Disguises: Gives characters a fake nose and glasses. Adorns some vehicles as well.
- Super Blaster: Blasters are twice as powerful as normal.
- Super Zapper: Droid and Jawa zappers can stun anyone and kill droids.
- Super Lightsaber: Lightsabers are all purple and twice as powerful as normal.
- 2x (or 4x, 6x, 8x, 10x) Multiplier: 2x, 4x, 6x, 8x, 10x Stud count. Stud multipliers are cumulative, so if all multipliers are turned on the total effect is 3840x. Note: If the player has all of these on and enters a double score zone, the multiplier becomes 7680x.
- Fast Build: Characters build with Lego bricks faster.
- Fast Force: The Force works faster.
- Mini-kit Detector: Red, White, and Green (depending on its distance) arrows appears showing the location of any Mini-Kits in the area.
- Regenerate Hearts: Characters regenerate health automatically.
- Self-Destruct: Gives droids the ability to self-destruct with the same effect of thermal detonators.
- Unlimited Torpedoes: Vehicles will auto-generate torpedoes in Vehicle levels.
- Bounty Hunter Rockets: Jango and Boba Fett can shoot rockets from their backpacks, which have the same strength as thermal detonators. (Note: Since the button to launch the rocket is the same as that used to change characters in Story Mode or get in a vehicle, the player must not be near other characters or vehicles to use this extra.)
- Super Ewok Catapult: Ewoks launch mini proton torpedoes (instead of the usual rocks that they fire), which have the same strength as thermal detonators.
- Santa: Although not actually an extra, a code was given out to turn one of the customizable players into Santa Claus. (See below)
- Extra toggle: Normally unplayable characters are available to play in free play, including many droids that cannot be purchased.
Episode bonus levels
After completing all chapters in an episode and collecting a certain number of gold bricks (8 for A New Hope, 16 for The Empire Strikes Back, 32 for Return of the Jedi), a secret entrance can be constructed in each episode's room (denoted by a question mark symbol) which contains three bonus levels. The first of these levels is Super Story mode, in which the player gets to replay the entire episode continuously, with the added constraints of needing to collect 100,000 studs and complete all six levels within a cumulative time of one hour. The other two levels consist of collecting 1,000,000 studs within five minutes, as a character of the player's choice and as a minikit vehicle (if any minikit in the game has been completed, it can be used in any episode's bonus level; however, the more minikits are collected, the more options there are to use).
Bounty hunter mode
Once all bounty hunter characters in the game (4-LOM, IG-88, Dengar, Bossk, Greedo and Boba Fett) have been unlocked, a special bounty hunter mode, consisting of ten levels, becomes available. A gold brick is obtained for completing each level. During bounty hunter mode, the player is given three minutes to find the bounty in the level he/she is playing in. The name of the level dictates the bounty. The bounty hunters 4-LOM and IG-88 can open R2-D2 and C-3PO doors.[4], while all Bounty Hunters can open Bounty Hunter doors. Studs are earned via the time remaining once the level is completed, with more time remaining equalling more studs.
Secrets
By achieving certain objectives throughout levels (completing the levels, collecting enough studs to fill the Jedi meter, finishing the mini-kits, as well as a few hidden objectives), the player earns gold bricks. Once 60 gold bricks have been collected and the player has completed story play in all three episodes, the player can enter Lego City. This is a playground level set in a Lego City (based on the Lego Town series) where the objective is to collect all one million studs in the level. Once all 99 gold bricks have been collected, a stud fountain outside the cantina is unlocked; this spits out numerous silver, gold and blue studs every four seconds. On December 22 2006, two cheat codes were announced that allowed the player to create Santa as a playable character.[5][6]
Differences in specific platforms
GBA
For the Game Boy Advance, the game is altered for portability reasons (i.e. graphics, fewer characters etc). The Game Boy version has 36 playable characters, fewer than the console versions, although it does feature characters not available in console versions such as a baby rancor and R2-Q5.
There are not any power bricks to find, but there are still extras to buy.
- Cantina music: Plays music from the cantina during a level.
- Jabba's Baroque: Plays Jabba's music.
- Sith Mode: Turns the player's lightsaber red.
- Lightsaber blue: Turns the player's lightsaber blue.
- Lightsaber red: Turns the player's lightsaber red.
- Lightsaber green: Turns the player's lightsaber green.
- Jedi Spirit: Turns characters except droids into ghosts.
- Silhouette: Turns the player's character into a silhouette.
- Clown: Turns character into a clown.
- Classic: Changes display to classic colors.

Nintendo DS
For the Nintendo DS version, the game is altered for portability reasons (ie. graphics, fewer characters, etc.). The DS version has 50 characters, though they don't exactly match the ones from the console games. In addition to cooperative multiplayer, the DS version allows up to four people to battle wirelessly, where they can choose to fight over Han Solo in Jabba's Palace or battle in a Tatooine-themed arena. Character swapping is performed by touching icons on the touch screen.
Though generally praised for its gameplay, the original release of the DS version was criticized for its bugs and graphic glitches. Many internet sites accused it of being rushed to shelves with the other versions of the game and the reissued Star Wars DVD films. One website was supposedly contacted by anonymous employees of the developer which claimed that the US, European, and Japanese versions were different from each other regarding the bugs, and that a new fixed version would be shipped to shelves after the first print run was sold out.[7] This has not been verified by either the publisher or developer.
PlayStation Portable
The PlayStation Portable version of Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy contains PlayStation Portable exclusive material including the final levels from Episodes 1, 2, 3 of the first Lego Star Wars game and a challenge mode for each level in LSW II, where the player goes through each level to find all 10 blue minikits in a time limit. If completed, the player will achieve a character from the original Lego Star Wars game.
The cantina's area is made a ghost town featuring only the player and one other character, to make sure the game would be lag-free. The bounty hunter missions are excluded from the game in place of the prequel episodes' levels. Gold bricks cannot be bought from the cantina, and there are much longer loading times.
Otherwise, the PlayStation Portable version contains the same features and gameplay as the console versions, with one reviewer describing it as "having all of the substance, cut-scenes and style of the Xbox 360 version."
