Elections in New York State |
---|
The 2021 New York City mayoral election will consist of Democratic and Republican primaries on June 22, 2021, followed by a general election on November 2, 2021. Incumbent Mayor Bill de Blasio is unable to run for a third term due to term limits.[1] The election will be the first New York City mayoral election to use ranked-choice voting in the primaries.[2]
By the summer of 2020, many candidates had declared themselves for both major parties, and most of them were first-time candidates who had never held political office, rather than sitting elected officials. By 2021, major candidates who entered the race include entrepreneur, former 2020 candidate for President of the United States and former Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship Andrew Yang, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer, former Citigroup executive Raymond McGuire, New School professor Maya Wiley and Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa, along with a large number of other prominent members of the New York City business and political communities.
