Wikipedia:Requests for page protection

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Jmlk17 (talk | contribs) at 12:24, 28 February 2008 (→‎{{la|Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show controversy}}: nea). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Welcome—request protection of a page, file, or template here.

Before requesting, read the protection policy. Full protection is used to stop edit warring between multiple users or to prevent vandalism to high-risk templates; semi-protection and pending changes are usually used to prevent IP and new user vandalism (see the rough guide to semi-protection); and move protection is used to stop pagemove revert wars. Extended confirmed protection is used where semi-protection has proved insufficient (see the rough guide to extended confirmed protection)

After a page has been protected, it is listed in the page history and logs with a short rationale, and the article is listed on Special:Protectedpages. In the case of full protection due to edit warring, admins should not revert to specific versions of the page, except to get rid of obvious vandalism.

Request protection of a page, or increasing the protection level

Request unprotection of a page, or reducing the protection level

Request a specific edit to a protected page
Please request an edit directly on the protected page's talk page before posting here

    Current requests for protection

Place requests for new or upgrading pending changes, semi-protection, full protection, move protection, create protection, template editor protection, or upload protection at the BOTTOM of this section. Check the archive of fulfilled and denied requests or, failing that, the page history if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

R160B (New York City Subway car) (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Full protect edit war. The above five pages have been edit warred for a little over a week regarding whether or not the R160 series cars will or won't replace them. I favor the wording, "The R160 series may replace some or all of these cars." As far as has been publicly stated from the MTA, nothing has been decided yet. Please protect R160A and R160B page too, to keep this edit war from spilling over there. Acps110 (talk) 03:34, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Declined all the pages. I have declined these for a couple of reasons. First, the articles in question are being disputed by new users and IP's, thus full-protection isn't warranted. Secondly, this mass request shouldn't have been done. The two or three IPs/new users should have been warned and told to discuss the pages. Just stopping the edits for a while won't solve anything. Lastly, most of the pages seemed to have calmed down and protection doesnt seem to be needed at this time. Next time, if this happens, please report it to WP:AN/I and admins will be able to help you out better, because just protection will not solve the dispute. « Gonzo fan2007 talkcontribs 06:26, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    Current requests for unprotection

Before posting, first discuss with the protecting admin at their talk page. Post below only if you receive no reply.

    • To find out the username of the admin who protected the page click on "history" at the top of the page, then click on "View logs for this page" which is under the title of the page. The protecting admin is the username in blue before the words "protected", "changed protection level" or "pending changes". If there are a number of entries on the log page, you might find it easier to select "Protection log" or "Pending changes log" from the dropdown menu in the blue box.
    • Requests to downgrade full protection to template protection on templates and modules can be directed straight here; you do not need to ask the protecting admin first.
    • Requests for removing create protection on redlinked articles are generally assisted by having a draft version of the intended article prepared beforehand.
    • If you want to make spelling corrections or add uncontroversial information to a protected page please add {{Edit fully-protected}} to the article's talk page, along with an explanation of what you want to add to the page. If the talk page is protected please use the section below.

Check the archives if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

    User:Jimbo Wales (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

unprotection , It has been a few days since the last case of vandalism. His talk page has been unprotected and has not been hit recently..KnightLago (talk) 20:01, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Declined Tempted to leave it a little longer (2-3 days). Generally, there is no urgent need for anyone to edit that page. GDonato (talk) 20:31, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree there is no pressing need for anyone to edit that page. However, it doesn't look good for Jimbo's page (as founder, chair emeritus, etc.) to be protected. Jimbo has also specifically encouraged people to edit the page. I think the benefits of unprotection far outweigh the negatives at the moment. If the vandal pops up again, the page can simply be re-protected. KnightLago (talk) 20:37, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    Unprotected GDonato (talk) 20:46, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Current requests for significant edits to a protected page

Ideally, requests should be made on the article talk page rather than here.

    • Unless the talk page itself is protected, you may instead add the appropriate template among {{Edit protected}}, {{Edit template-protected}}, {{Edit extended-protected}}, or {{Edit semi-protected}} to the article's talk page if you would like to make a change rather than requesting it here. Doing so will automatically place the page in the appropriate category for the request to be reviewed.
    • Where requests are made due to the editor having a conflict of interest (COI; see Wikipedia:Suggestions for COI compliance), the {{Edit COI}} template should be used.
    • Requests to move move-protected pages should be made at Wikipedia:Requested moves, not here.
    • If the discussion page and the article are both protected preventing you from making an edit request, this page is the right place to make that request. Please see the top of this page for instructions on how to post requests.
    • This page is not for continuing or starting discussions regarding content should both an article and its discussion page be protected. Please make a request only if you have a specific edit you wish to make.

    User talk:Douglasfgrego (edit | user page | history | links | watch | logs)

Would like to request the entire contents of talk:Douglasfgrego be deleted/purged. I am going to be looking for a new job soon, and the talk:Douglasfgrego is the first to appear on a google search of douglasfgrego. The content within has the potential to negatively influence a hiring decision. Additionally, the account has been placed on indefinite block, there is no indication this block will be lifted, and the entry to which the exchange refers has been deleted. There is no benefit to Wikipedia in preserving this, and the detrimental effect on me is potentially massive. --76.15.160.99 (talk) 23:43, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Declined Maybe that all should have been thought out before the user in question performed the actions that got it blocked. The page has a useful history, thus it will not be deleted, and I see no need to lift the protection due to the abuse of the talk page. – Gonzo fan2007 talkcontribs 07:28, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
After discussion with Gonzo Fan2007, we have agreed that if the IP agrees here to cease editing (and comply with his community ban) then User:Douglasfgrego will be deleted and User talk:Douglasfgrego will be courtesy blanked. Note that the right to vanish is confined to users in good standing, but we will offer this as a courtesy. Stifle (talk) 19:55, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    Genmay (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

I request that genmay redirect to HardOCP#General_Mayhem.

I don't know the backstory with General Mayhem and Wikipedia, but I can see that it's protected because it's been vandalized and deleted repeatedly. Regardless, it makes sense to me for the article to redirect to HardOCP#General_Mayhem instead of not existing at all. A forum that has 22 million posts at least deserves a redirect to a paragraph that explains where it came from. OK, the users spam their forums for fun. I mean to say that there's an extant paragraph in the [H]ard|OCP article that has lived peacefully for some time, so it seems reasonable to redirect.
