Below is a list of countries by formation dates, sorted by continent.

There is sometimes confusion between the words 'country' (a geographical entity), 'nation' (a cultural grouping), and 'state' (a political entity). Taking this into account a declaration of being the "oldest country" in the world will inevitably be disputed.

^ The government of the Republic of China, which currently administers Taiwan, was the generally recognized sovereign power over Mainland China beginning in January 1, 1912. Sovereign control of Taiwan by this government began on October 25, 1945 (Retrocession Day).
^ The PRC acquired de facto control in Mainland China on October 1, 1949. The Republic of China continued to be generally recognized as the legitimate government of China until October 25, 1971, when the PRC was admitted to the United Nations. Currently, due to the PRC's One-China policy, only 23 states recognize the Republic of China, although many more retain unofficial relations.
