The Voice is a multinational singing competition television franchise. The series started in the Netherlands as The Voice of Holland in 2010. Many other countries have adapted the format and began airing their national versions in 2011 and 2012. It has become a rival to Simon Fuller's Idol and Simon Cowell's The X Factor.

Format

Contestants are aspiring singers drawn from public auditions. The show's format features three stages of competition. The first is the blind audition, in which four coaches listen to contenders without seeing them, and turn their chairs to signify that they are interested in working with that artist. If more than one coach turns the chair, the artist chooses the coach he or she would like to work with. The blind audition ends when each coach has a set number of artists to work with (such as ten in the U.K. version, twelve in the U.S. version or sixteen in the Dutch version). Coaches will dedicate themselves to developing their singers, giving them advice, and sharing the secrets of their success.

The competition then enters into a battle phase, when the coaches pit two of their own team members against each other to sing the same song together in front of a studio audience. After the vocal face-off, the coach must choose which singers will advance.

At the end of the battle episodes, the strongest members of each coach's roster proceed to the live stage shows. In this final performance phase of the competition, the top contestants from each team compete against each other during a live broadcast. The television audience vote to save one contestant on each team, leaving the coach to decide live who they want to save and who will not move on. In the next round, the public chooses between the two artists left on each team, and the coach also has a vote that weighs equally with the public vote.

Finally, each coach will have his/her best contestant left standing to compete in the finals, singing an original song. From these four, one will be named "The Voice"—and will receive the grand cash prize of a recording contract. Starting with the U.S. version, the coaches usually perform together in the first episode.

One of the cornerstones of The Voice format is the social media participation via Twitter, Facebook and the especially designed platform “connect.” Users are able to login via their Facebook account and retrieve background information about the show. The platform also offers the possibility to stream the show online as well as to vote, interact with friends and to discuss various topics and questions asked by the producers throughout the show.[1]

Ongoing

The series was created and licensed internationally by Dutch-based Talpa Media Group. The format was launched on RTL 4 in 2010 in the Netherlands as The Voice of Holland. The franchise has signed a global recording and artist services agreement with Universal Music Group.[2]

American television network NBC ran a variant of the format titled The Voice in April 2011, with the winner set to receive $100,000 and a recording contract with Universal Republic. NBC partnered with John de Mol, Mark Burnett and production company Warner Horizon Television[3] to bring the format of The Voice of Holland to America. Castings were held in major American cities (Chicago, New York, Miami, Nashville, Minneapolis, Austin, Los Angeles and Seattle).[3] Online applications were also allowed[4] and ended on 1 March 2011.

The third country to air its own version of The Voice was Ukraine. The Ukrainian version, called Holos Krayiny ("Voice of the Country"), premiered on 1+1 on 22 May 2011.

Belgian broadcaster vtm began airing its own version of the show in 2011, titled The Voice van Vlaanderen ("The Voice of Flanders").[5] Broadcaster La Une has bought the rights and will air the program in 2011 for the French-speaking part of Belgium.[6] Casting began in July 2011.

The Polish version, The Voice of Poland, premiered on 3 September 2011 on the TVP 2 television network.

In México production of the show, La Voz... México, premiered on the Televisa network on 11 September 2011 with very high ratings, dwarfing its competition.[7]

Portugal had its own successful version of the show airing from October 29, 2011 to February 25, 2012, on RTP. Under the name A Voz de Portugal (The Voice of Portugal, in Portuguese), the coaches were Paulo Gonzo, Anjos, Mia Rose and Rui Reininho, with Catarina Furtado has the host.

In Ireland, RTÉ began airing The Voice of Ireland on 8 January 2012. Presented by Kathryn Thomas and Eoghan McDermott, the coaches are Niall Breslin, Sharon Corr, Kian Egan and Brian Kennedy.

In Germany, the two television networks ProSieben and Sat.1 began airing The Voice of Germany on 24 November 2011. The coaches are Nena, Xavier Naidoo, The BossHoss and Rea Garvey. The series is host by Stefan Gödde and with Doris Golpashin serving as the backstage.

In South Korea, Mnet makes a Korean version of the franchise called The Voice of Korea.[8] The show launched in February 2012.

In Finland, Nelonen began airing The Voice of Finland in January 2012. Axl Smith hosts, and the coaches are Michael Monroe, Elastinen, Paula Koivuniemi and Lauri Tähkä.

In France, a version known as The Voice: la plus belle voix began airing on February 25th, 2012.

In Netherlands, the format is so successful that they even started a Voice Kids.

In the United Kingdom, it was confirmed on 17 June 2011 that the BBC had acquired the rights for the The Voice UK which began airing on BBC One on 24 March 2012.[9] With Jessie J, will.i.am from The Black Eyed Peas, Danny O'Donoghue from The Script and Tom Jones as the four coaches.[10] The first series premiered on 24 March 2012.

In Australia, The Voice premiered on the Nine Network On 15 April 2012 with Keith Urban, Delta Goodrem, Joel Madden from Good Charlotte and Seal as the four coaches and was highly successful.

In Argentina, La Voz... Argentina premiered on Telefe On 1 July 2012 with high ratings. The Coaches are Axel, Soledad Pastorutti, "El Puma" Rodríguez and the voices of the band of electro pop Miranda! Ale Sergi and Juliana Gattas.

In Vietnam, the show is known as Giọng hát Việt domestically and The Voice of Vietnam internationally. It premiered on July 8, 2012. Reportedly, Vietnam is the second country in Asia acquiring the right to produce and broadcast the show exclusively, only after South Korea.[11] Dam Vinh Hung, Thu Minh, Ho Ngoc Ha and Tran Lap are the four coaches of the show.

In Thailand, the show is currently for audition with the name The Voice เสียงจริง ตัวจริง (The Voice Sieng Jing Tour Jing) domestically and The Voice Thailand internationally. It is expected that it will begin airing on Channel 3 on 9 September 2012 after final of Thailand's Got Talent season 2 in the same time slot.

In Spain, Mediaset Spain acquired the rights to air its version, La Voz.[12] It premiered on 19 September 2012 on Telecinco.[13][14][15] The show is hosted by Jesús Vázquez, accompanied by Tania Llasera as the social media correspondent.[16].[17] David Bisbal, Malú, Rosario Flores and Melendi are the coaches.[18]

In Brazil, it was confirmed on early 2012 that the Rede Globo had acquired the rights for the The Voice Brasil which began airing on on September 23, 2012 with Lulu Santos, Carlinhos Brown, Claudia Leitte and Daniel as the four coaches.

Future

Talpa and Miditech announced they were working together to produce an Indian version of the format.[19] In India it was announced that Imagine TV got the rights for The Voice India.

In Switzerland, SF 1 acquired the rights to air its version in 2012. The Voice of Switzerland will start in January 2013.[20]

A French Canadian version will premiere in Quebec in 2013 on TVA. At present, only Marie-Mai and Marc Dupré were mentionned as coaches.[21] No English-language adaptation of the show has yet been announced.

A Japanese version might premiere no earlier than 2013. No host or coaches have been selected as the network that might carry the show has not been revealed.

In Hungary, the show "The Voice—Magyarország hangja" (The Voice—Voice of Hungary) will start in September 2012 on TV2. It will be the rival show of the Hungarian "X-Faktor".

A Philippine version of the show is expected to premiere in 2013 with ABS-CBN acquiring the rights. It will be the second reality singing competition that the network will launch this year after also acquiring the rights to produce a Philippines version of The X Factor. This was confirmed during the finale of Pinoy Big Brother: Unlimited. However, it is originally set to premiere in December 2012, but it was moved to 2013, because another talent show will be aired, the 4th season of Pilipinas Got Talent.

In Colombia, Caracol TV will soon be airing the show, called La Voz Colombia which is currently in its blind audition phase. Andres Cepeda, Fanny Lu, Carlos Vives, and Ricardo Montaner have been confirmed as coaches and presenters are Carlos Ponce and Diego Saenz.

In the Middle East, The Voice premiered on MBC on September 14th, 2012 drawing a huge audience in its first episodes with largely successful ratings. The teams are coached by Kadim Al Sahir, Sherine, Saber el Robai, and Assi elHellani. [22]

Cancelled series

In Italy, the idea of an Italian version of The Voice came up during the first months of 2012, when RAI channel Rai Due invited many notable Italian artists to take part as judges. Claudio Baglioni, Giorgia, Giuliano Sangiorgi of Negramaro, Elisa and Laura Pausini were offered to join, but they all declined. The reason of their refusal was related to the risk of mentoring "voices" for a format who had such an international success. Lately, other singers confirmed their presences as Massimo Ranieri, Gigi D'Alessio, Giusy Ferreri, Roby Facchinetti and Mario Biondi. RAI eventually decided not to produce a series whose success was so uncertain, especially because both Rai Due's and Rai Uno's budgets were reduced for more than 3 millions and half euros, and that didn't guarantee a good program. So, after the refusal of the biggest names of Italian music industry, RAI cancelled the project.[23] Satellite Sky Italia has not already spoken about producing The Voice as they recently took the rights to produce X Factor, instead of Rai Due, which had been airing the program until 2011.
