Trying to connect es article with en article with Wikidata?

Wikidata is designed for people smarter than I, and I can't even find a help desk over there, so I have to ask somewhere, my apologies. At Fiona Gubelmann is an "add links" button, and when I press it, it says I need to be logged into the central data repository... which I am, so apparently this thing doesn't work. At wikidata, I searched for Fiona Gubelmann and found two results, and because of this, apparently I can't connect the two together. I just wanted to have es:Fiona Gubelmann listed on the en: page, and vice versa; it used to be so simple. If someone wants to take this up, I'd be grateful. Thanks. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 06:02, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There were two separate items in Wikidata, for some reason. I checked that they linked to articles about the same person, then merged them (using the merge gadget which I had enabled in my Wikidata account). --ColinFine (talk) 08:12, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much ColinFine. I looked at what you did, and I think I was on the right track except for the second item blocking anything I was doing from working. :) – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 18:31, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wonthaggi Public Library - error in wikipedia entry

When searching for "Wonthaggi Public Library" the webpage Wonthaggi appears which contains an error in the last line of the 3rd last para of the "History" section. It says that the library is in the Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre - it is NOT. It is in a totally different building approx two blocks away from the Arts Centre (and later this year is moving to yet another location). I am a Wonthaggi resident. Please correct this error by removing the reference to the library being in the Arts Centre. Many thanks.121.219.158.78 (talk) 06:53, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As that "fact" was unsourced, I've removed it. Rojomoke (talk) 08:08, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the information. Rojomoke has removed it, but if you find errors you are welcome to edit the article and correct them yourself. --ColinFine (talk) 08:14, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Tracking Buffalo Through the Bathtub

Here's an article about an album, Tracking Buffalo Through the Bathtub, that uses http://allmusic.com as its only source. Is this considered to be a reliable source? —Anne Delong (talk) 09:23, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's using that reference for the rating that the album achieved on that site. So, yes, it's reliable for that fact. It sounds like you're asking if it's enough to establish notability. As for that, no it's not enough to establish notability. Though the album may be notable anyway. See WP:NALBUMS. Dismas|(talk) 09:32, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Unsourced article

Dear editors: If an article like this one Final Report has been marked unsourced for four years and no one has added any sources, should it be deleted? —Anne Delong (talk) 09:43, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Best to check if sources are available and, if you can't find any, nominate it at WP:Afd. Clarityfiend (talk) 11:52, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Article editing

I want to create an article with a very offensive title, but is notable. Will I get in trouble if I create this ? Amstaedeae (talk) 13:10, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe.
What makes you think that the topic is notable? How much experience do you have in establishing the notability of topics on Wikipedia?
Why does the articler title have to be "very offensive" for this topic? There is more information at Wikipedia:Article titles. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 13:28, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Unified Login Question

I asked this question earlier, but not in its own thread, and didn't get an answer. If I click on a link to a page in Meta or Commons, the page displays, but I am not logged in. I then have to go to the upper right corner and select Login and enter my user ID and password. If I didn't notice that I was no longer logged in, I could accidentally edit, and would be editing as an IP address beginning with 71 (and it wouldn't always be the same address, because telephone companies use dynamic IP addresses). Am I being too optimistic or too unreasonable in thinking that a unified login should stay logged in across Wikipedia wikis? Robert McClenon (talk) 18:28, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it's trivial to maintain cookies (or whatever) across domains (if you go from Wikipedia to Meta, for example); it might even break Internet rules. On the other hand, if you stay within Wikipedia (for example, you go from en.wikipedia.org to fr.wikipedia.org), you do stay logged in.
More generally, this strikes me as the sort of question better asked at WP:VPT. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 21:36, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Biography being redundantly revised.

There is a dispute pertaining to this biography that is causing repetitive revisions: T. Winter-Damon Madamecp (talk) 18:34, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Don't engage in an edit war. Discuss the issue on the article's talk page, and follow the guidance at WP:DR RudolfRed (talk) 18:49, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This issue has leaked outside of WP - see http://twinterdamon.tumblr.com/ The discussion on the Talk page seems to be unproductive. The IP editor is probably the tumblr blogger - is there a way of confirming if it is Damon? Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 18:56, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've tagged the article as containing weasel wording. Is there another reliable source about the death? I agree that the IP editor probably is the Tumblr blogger. There appears to be some sort of malicious prank. Either the death notice is false, a malicious prank against Damon by someone, or the Tumblr blogger is an Internet sockpuppet. Robert McClenon (talk) 19:27, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Discussion is continuing on the article talk page. The basic issue is whether the subject of the article is living or dead. There is no reliable source for either, so the references to the subject's death have been removed. Robert McClenon (talk) 01:46, 24 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Quickly rename

Uhm, this is kind of an embarrassing mistake but I just created a category for Category:Riots and civil unrest during the Reconstuction Era and misspelled the key word Reconstruction. How can I get that quickly renamed so I can go on building the cat?--Bellerophon5685 (talk) 19:43, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I took a look at what you've done - Requested move does not work on Categories. Probably the easiest way to deal with this is to simply create a new catgory with the correct spelling then empty the incorrect category which will make it eligible for deletion. BTW I added a link to the category in your post. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 19:58, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've now emptied the misspelled cat.--Bellerophon5685 (talk) 20:07, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Fraud

Dear Sirs:

While searching for band members of RAM JAM the singers of the 70's hit BLACK BETTY. I was sad but not shocked to see a man...a so called friend Who had told not only me but many people he was the lead singer of that group. I am a singer and songwriter. For years I believed this to be true. The man's name is MICHAEL TAMBARKIS. I then searched your site for his name.

To my horror I saw that he listed me..Christina Liberatore as signed to his publishing company and listed my songs to be under his label. He did that ILLEGALLY WITHOUT MY SIGNATURE OR PERMISSION.

Currently he is being sued by myself and my husband for stealing 32,000$ of our money for kitchen renovations he never provided and Appliances he said he ordered and gave us phony receipts for.

We won the judgement and order of attatchment. I would like my name to be removed from any connection with this man on your site as I am NOT Legally signed to his label.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.187.72.43 (talk) 00:52, 24 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I am unable to find either 'Michael Tambarkis' or 'Christina Liberatore' in any article on Wikipedia. Our article on Ram Jam makes no mention of Tambarkis. Consequently, I cannot see what it is you are asking us to correct. AndyTheGrump (talk) 01:24, 24 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Searching further, I've found this [1], which presumably is what you are referring to. It is not a Wikipedia article - instead it is a page in a user's workspace. Having said that, it should probably be deleted as unsourced, referring to living individuals, and masquerading as an article. I think the best course will be for me to blank the page for now (per WP:BLP policy), and proceed from there. Note that I am doing this because of the misuse of the page, rather than as a result of your allegations - we would need verifiable evidence to take such matters into consideration. "to do" prompt?

Is there any way that I can set up a "to-do" list that prompts me the way someone posting on my talk page does, without my pinging myself from a sock, that will remind me I have things to do without my having to remember to check my to-do page? Wikipedia failing accessibility guidelines

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this.

Hello Helpdesk.

Milestone Communications

I am trying to create an article about a friend of mines company Milestone Communications. I used language from their website; http://www.milestonecommunications.com/ and included it in my references. I was alerted saying that the language I used was also found in another online article/website that I had never heard of before. How do I write a non-biased article without using anything from their website?

Sincerely, Danielle Mock — Preceding unsigned comment added by Danimock (talkcontribs) 16:21, 24 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You have to write it in your own words rather than copying or closely paraphrasing copyright material. Even if you obtained permission to use the copyright material per the process at WP:IOWN, it would probably be too promotional/non-neutral to be used on Wikipedia. I suggest that you use the WP:AFC process to re-create the article, so that it can be reviewed by other users first. You also have a bit of a conflict of interest, so please also take a look at WP:COI.--ukexpat (talk) 16:26, 24 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Please also look at WP:NCORP. Unless the company fulfils the criteria there, it is unlikely to be an appropriate subject for a Wikipedia article. - Karenjc 19:06, 24 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki article on Tyson J. Swindell

I was looking my son's article up on Wikipedia that was posted last year, and it has been deleted! How can we get it back? We did not know articles would be deleted. His article was "Tyson Swindell." Please help. Thank you, Roni Swindell — Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.97.43.21 (talk) 23:01, 24 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Your son's article (Tyson Swindell) was deleted by User:Explicit on September 28, 2012 with the deletion reason Expired PROD, concern was: Vanity article that clearly fails WP:BASIC, WP:ANYBIO, and WP:ARTIST. The sources are either unreliable or barely mention subject of article. Google News search turned up nothing more.

This means that there was a WP:PROD tag on the article for longer than 7 days. PROD stands for PROposed Deletion, and is a simple way to delete articles that don't have anyone opposing deletion. However, since you've voiced opposition, I've asked an administrator to restore the article, purely as a procedure. However, if the article is not improved to fix the concerns raised, it almost certainly will be sent to articles for deletion and deleted again, after which time it won't be so easy to get it undeleted. Happy editing! Charmlet (talk) 23:23, 24 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at the article, I have my doubts that the subject meets the guidelines laid out in Wikipedia:Notability (music) - we'd need evidence to the contrary from independent published sources in order for an article to be justified. AndyTheGrump (talk) 23:34, 24 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It has indeed been taken to AFD - the discussion is at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tyson Swindell. Unfortunately it looks unlikely to survive the discussion unless some references can be supplied that satisfy the notability requirements that Andy has linked to above. -Karenjc 09:48, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Global user manager

I have a question about the global user manager (no problems, I am just curious about how it works). When I look at https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ACentralAuth&target=Jimbo+Wales I see several values for "Method" which I assume means authentication method.

I see a lot of "created on login" which appears to happen whenever you read the other Wikipedia while logged on to the English wikipedia and I see "home Wiki" and "not attached" which are pretty obvious.

I also see "confirmed by password" and "confirmed by email". I am curious as to under what circumstances those are added. Is it because some wikis require an email or a password to log on while others don't? --Guy Macon (talk) 01:30, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It indicates how accounts were attached to the unified login. You will mostly see this on older pre-SUL accounts (all new accounts are unified by default) but also on accounts that were merged for some other reason. An example of the latter would be when accounts from Wikitravel (not Wikimedia) were migrated to Wikivoyage (Wikimedia's fork of Wikitravel) and merged to the users' SUL accounts. From the (?) tooltips "confirmed by email: Indicates that the local account was merged because its email address matched the email address of the main account." Looking at the output of the global user manager, how does one get a "Hidden Level"? While it sounds neat, if Jimbo doesn't have it, I don't know who would. 1/2 :)Naraht (talk) 13:48, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It isn't as cool as it sounds ("I killed the dragon and unlocked the hidden level!") it just means that the username is hidden from global user lists. Not sure if you can just ask for that or whether you have to have a reason for wanting it.
Why doesn't that page have any documentation attached? --Guy Macon (talk) 14:17, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Special pages aren't (in some sense) pages - they are database reports. As far as I know, none of them have a talk/discussion page. That's probably something that could be designed around, but it hasn't been, so far, apparently. But they can have information at the top of the report - see, for example, the Recent Changes "page". I'm not sure who (an admin, at minimum; perhaps a developer?) would be able to modify a page (report) to add such information. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 15:58, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Admins can edit the MediaWiki namespace which contains many interface messages. The top of Special:RecentChanges displays MediaWiki:Recentchanges-summary and MediaWiki:Recentchangestext. If you add ?uselang=qqx to a url (or &uselang=qqx for urls' which already have a ? earlier) then the names of used MediaWiki messages should be shown in parentheses. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ARecentChanges&uselang=qqx shows "(recentchanges-summary)" near the top, but for unknown reasons it still displays the content of MediaWiki:Recentchangestext instead of displaying "(recentchangestext)". At Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#uselang=qqx displays message instead of its name I have asked why. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ACentralAuth&target=Jimbo+Wales&uselang=qqx shows lots of message names but none of them are in a good position for documentation. is it permitted to restore a dispute resolution noticeboard issue, which was auto archived

Hi, this dispute resolution noticeboard issue was auto archived while active.

• Hello. I am a dispute resolution volunteer at the Wikipedia Dispute Resolution Noticeboard. First, let me answer the general question, then I will get into the specifics of your case. In general, dispute resolution volunteers can do whatever they think will help to resolve the dispute, so either re-opening or refiling is an option. It is generally a bad idea for someone in a dispute to do things like unarchiving, because others in the dispute may object. I will be happy to do it for you, but first let's talk about it a bit and discuss why you might or might not want to. As for refiling, anyone can refile at any time. The only question is whether you want to do that. The rest of my response is about this specific dispute, and that isn't really the kind of thing the help desk does, so I am going to continue this on the article talk page. --Guy Macon (talk) 06:06, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Offer of paid editing in China?

Hey there, I am not a Wikipedia editor, but I do read it often. I am on a business trip in Chengdu, China with my legal firm, based in Newark, New Jersey. When I was in Starbucks, in Chengdu, I was approached by a smartly dressed Chinese man, asking if I wanted paid work in editing Wikipedia profiles for people. I declined naturally, but I just thought I would let you guys know that this is going on.

All the best, Ralph. --Ralph McCulsky (talk) 10:42, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for this notification. We're aware that there are many editors who are paid to edit, but the Wikipedia rules do not strictly ban such behaviour. Instead, paid editors are strongly discouraged from editing if there are conflict of interest reasons. However, when paid editing is benign, Wikipedia takes no action at all. — Richard BB 10:47, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Paid editing may be a good way to encourage more people to join Wikipedia in a few years as regulars are declining. If what's wrote is neutral and notable then personally i don't see a problem. Much better that it's in the open than hidden. That way it can be watched over at least. I believe some Wikipedians take a more harsh view though. Thanks Jenova20 (email) 3:13 pm, Today (UTC+1)

Knowledge Graph

When one searches for a person who has a Wikipedia page using Google one usually gets a so-called knowledge graph/panel, on the right-hand side of the page displaying the search results, which links to the Wikipedia page of that person. However for some people no knowledge panel shows up in a Google search, despite the fact that they have a Wikipedia page---Can you please clarify why this is so? My guess is that this might happen for people with recently created Wikipedia pages, as Google might need some time to link to them, but I might be mistaken.Dspinside (talk) 11:25, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You might find someone to help you at relevant WikiProjects - look on the Talk pages of the articles concerned - click the the "Discussion" tab. It's a really good idea to (a) post your sources to the article talk page (even if not online); and (b) do a rough draft of what you'd like to add - limiting this to what is contained in acceptable sources, again, posting this at the article talk page. You're a lot more likely to find a volunteer if you've done these two things first, and you mention having done them, when asking for editing help. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 15:39, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Creating a Wikipedia page for Alloy Digital

Good Afternoon,

I work for Alloy Digital (http://www.alloydigital.com/). I am having a difficult time getting through to the e-mail address info-enwikimedia.org.

Our company is trying to create a master Wikipedia page (named Alloy Digital) as many of our owned and operated brands have created them. I began editing a page for Alloy Digital last week and it was immediately flagged by a couple of users. A couple of minutes later, it was taken down. So, a few colleagues and I edited the wording to prevent it from being “promotional”…It was then purely factual. I hadn’t even had the chance to cite my sources before it was taken down again…and then again. I was then blocked from creating this page. Hundreds of other media companies have Wikipedia pages, and I was just wondering if there was any insight you could provide me with in order to create ours. Thank you in advanced for your help!

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia containing articles about notable subjects, supported by references from previously published reliable sources. An article about your company will not be your page - once created, articles are open to editing by anyone. The presence of articles on "hundreds of other media companies" is irrelevant to the question of whether Alloy Digital should have an article written about them. We also discourage writing about something you have a close personal connection with. Some guidance can be found in Wikipedia's policies covering conflict of interest and the notability of companies. Finally, Wikipedia is not a place to promote your company. Astronaut (talk) 18:01, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding "I hadn’t even had the chance to cite my sources before it was taken down again…and then again", that's why we encourage people to write drafts of articles in user pages (as WikiDan61 has done), rather than where real encyclopedia articles exist. Because as well-intentioned as you might have been to cite sources, not surprisingly there are lots of people who don't have sources to cite, or expect others to add the citations - and it's really difficult (as in, impossible) to distinguish between your case (citations later) and their case (citations never). -- John Broughton (♫♫) 01:40, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The new page has been created (see Alloy Digital). Non-promotional, and based on published sources. Feel free to expand. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 14:13, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

In March we had our logo updated in our wiki page (File:St._Thomas_University_(Florida).gif). We have had a very difficult time trying to get our Google results to show the new updated logo. In Google results the old thumbnail of our old logo is still showing and when the image is hovered it is showing us the wiki url of the image. We have already removed the urls with Google and we have deleted the old logo image from our site. However it is still showing. We were told to wait until the site was recrawled but we think this is not the problem. We need the old logo image purged from wikipedia. How can we do this? This is really important to us, we are a university and our logo is imperative for our prospective students. Can someone help us? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Onl9onl9 (talkcontribs) 17:26, 25 June 2013‎ (UTC)[reply]

The new logo is correctly placed in the article - there's nothing else we can do. Perhaps Google can help you, it is after all their page that is showing the wrong logo, not ours. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 17:39, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The old logo image was purged from Wikipedia months ago. We have no control over when or if Google replaces their old copy with the current image. You are right that Google displays a Wikipedia url when you hover over the image, but this does not mean their search page is actually displaying the image at Wikipedia. They are displaying the image they once copied and the url they copied it from. It's simple to code a page so any chosen text is displayed when you hover over an image. Google's search page with the image has a "Feedback / More info" link. If you click that then you can click "Wrong?" at the image. I just did with no effect, but if many people do it then Google may eventually remove the image. I don't know how they process feedback of this type but maybe it's best if they get the same feedback from multiple IP addresses. Note: If they actually remove the old image then I cannot say whether they will replace it with another image. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:49, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

'Article of the Day'

How do I nominate an article for 'Article of the Day'? -Kind Regards --Trimmed Steok (talk) 17:26, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Are you referring to "Today's featured article" on the Main Page? Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests is the page for that. jonkerz ♠talk 17:32, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes sir, I am. --Trimmed Steok (talk) 17:41, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure how it works in detail as I've never proposed or requested an article myself. But only featured articles are considered, Sir, and as you can see on the request page, the process is kind of bureaucratic. jonkerz ♠talk 17:46, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
They have a range of criteria; anniversaries or things otherwise related to a specific day have a better chance for that day (for example, FAs on major candidates were together the Today's Featured Article for the day when the 2008 US presidential election was held), and due to the number of featured articles, an article really doesn't have a chance if it's appeared in the past. The other criteria are more subjective, if I remember rightly. Nyttend (talk) 20:22, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The fundamental problem is that the article dedicates very little space to the supposed reason that Pliuskaitis is notable in the first place, and a great deal to subsequent matters. Frankly, it is bordering on being seen as an attack page, and certainly needs substantial editing to comply with Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons policies. The whole thing is poorly sourced, and there is little justification that I can see for the long paragraph relating to the libel case. I am inclined to think that the article should be deleted unless it can be established, using better sourcing, that Pliuskaitis meets the notability guidelines, and if it is to be retained, the material concerning his ban etc will need substantial rewriting. AndyTheGrump (talk) 20:32, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. In particular, the long paragraph is incoherent – it all hangs on "concern over Pliuskaitis’ approach to competitive swimming", and it does not even explain what was alleged to be wrong with his approach. Deleting that whole paragraph would improve the article. Maproom (talk) 20:46, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No, the answer to the OP's question about a tag regarding bare URLs is because this version of the page had several bare URLs as references. This is susceptible to linkrot, so the more info we can add about references the better, most importantly the title and URL. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:42, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have suggestions on how to make it appear less as an attack page? What do you recommend removing from the page to keep it from appearing as an attack page as you say it does? I am open to suggestions.

What “substantial editing” needs to be completed to comply with the Wikipedia:Biographies of living person policies? Please be more specific in your answer. Please elaborate on why “the whole thing is poorly sourced”, especially when news sources such as the Fairfax Times, Swimming World, and Reach for the Wall of the Washington Post are among the sources provided? Finally, please be more specific in your assertion that “substantial rewriting” is needed on the material concerning his ban. What “substantial rewriting” is needed? I will rewrite the paragraph concerning the court case Pliuskaitis v. Jotautas (1999) 47 O.R. (3d) 227 per your suggestions. Thank you for your feedback Snowswimmer (talk) 21:01, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's essentially an attack page, with a WP:BLP1E issue. If Pliuskaitis had not been banned by USA Swimming, there would be zero chance of this surviving as a Wikipedia article: There is a total of one local newspaper article about him that is cited in the article. (I exclude his being given an award, or his legal case being analyzed in a magazine, or the notable people he coached, none of which gets at the notion of notability as Wikipedia uses it.) In other words, the only possible reason why he's "notable" is because of one thing (the ban).
Right now, it looks to me, we have an article about a guy who just (February 2013) became publicly known as having done something wrong, and - probably not coincidentally - a new editor, who is or was at the club (SNOW) that Pliuskaitis founded, wants there to be this Wikipedia article, so that the shameful information shows up really high in search engine results. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 02:06, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The original intent of the article was to dispel rumors (rumors that are much worse than what was and is in the Wikipedia article) circulating within the swimming world of the Northern Virginia area. The intent was to make others aware/give what was known based on news sources, not on rumors that were circulating on the pool deck and were vicious to the subject. My intent may have been skewed trying to create this entry (first time creating a Wikipedia entry) but as you can see I worked to eliminate the skewed sections with edits as I became more aware of what was expected of a Wikipedia entry and asked others for input to eliminate the skewed sections of the article. Another more experienced Wikipedia editor has offered to watch the page and has done a better job presenting the information correctly where I was admittedly not able to. I have previously informed the individual now watching the page that I will no longer be making any edits as I see that the screen name I created to make the page in the first place is a conflict of interest (I chose the screen name because I created the screen name just to make this entry about 1.) Snow and 2.) swimmers. in order to dispel the rumors circulating within the Northern Virginia area). Thank you all for your input, suggestions, and time. I am now done with my brief experience with Wikipedia. Snowswimmer (talk) 16:46, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Episode's plots/summaries

Just wanted to ask about the plot section on television series' episodes. If an editor writes a plot about the episode, by not using any sources but after seeing the episode, is that wrong? I mean, the source is the actual episode and the editor is writing a summary of it using their own words. Is it wrong to do it? Is this a "bad use"? I just suppose most of the plots are written that way since the majority of the plots I've seen don't have any sources on them. Same happens to the movies' plots that I had checked. Can't check every episode or every movie seperately but in almost all the ones I've checked, there are no sources for the plot. I was just wondering after a conversation I had with another editor and we both didn't know the answer. Thank you. TeamGale (talk) 21:05, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, primary sources can be used for summaries, but you have to make sure your write-up doesn't incorporate personal interpretation of themes, metaphors, meaning, etc. That's where you run afoul of the original research prohibition. :D Cyphoidbomb (talk) 00:15, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Wiki editors! I'm writing in regards to an article in progress; If someone has a minute to look at my Sandbox (link is below), it'd be much appreciated. I have provided new 3rd party references and revised the content, per suggestions from other editors. Also, I was wondering if it'd be more advantageous to make 'Franchising' the focus of this article, as I'm able to provide add'l neutral (& informative) content on this subject, which is becoming increasingly popular. Thanks in advance for any help or feedback.

Zaid231 (talk) 21:11, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Two things. (1) Normally, we don't put a slash at the end of the pagename (for example, my sandbox is User:Nyttend/sandbox, not User:Nyttend/sandbox/), but that's entirely a personal choice, so you should keep using this name if you feel like it. (2) As of right now, the page has no reliable sources providing substantial coverage. There's really not much in the article published by wsRadio, and our article on wsRadio makes me think that they're an opinion source, which isn't something upon which encyclopedia articles should be based. Right now, you need to expand the page to demonstrate why the company is important and why it passes our inclusion standards; the current version makes it sound like a small no-name company without a chance at qualifying, so if you think it qualifies, you need to demonstrate that it's much more than what it sounds like right now. Bits about franchising would be a bad idea, unless I misunderstand what you mean: it sounds as if you're meaning adding a section about "Franchise Opportunities!", which generally isn't encyclopedic. Tables with empty spaces

I'm trying to create a table in wiki code, but for some reason the "empty" cells aren't showing up. For example, I'm trying to create a table that looks like this[4] but it ends up looking like this:

Header 1 Header 2 Header 3
Stuff 1 Stuff 2 Stuff 3
Stuff 4
Stuff 5

It says on this page that you can use to fill an empty cell, but how do you do that exactly? Thanks. Raykyogrou0 (Talk) 22:44, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Something like this?
Header 1 Header 2 Header 3
Stuff 1 Stuff 2 Stuff 3
Stuff 4
Stuff 5
Just make the cells and leave them blank. Scarce2 (talk) 23:09, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is that you defined a table three cells wide, but only define cells for one column. Then you specify rowspan="5" but there are only three rows to span. The parser is just so confused. -- Gadget850 talk 23:11, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, let's take the example from the help page.
Column 1 Column 2 Column 3
A B
C D
E F
G
H
It says below that table that if you "use rowspan="2" for "G" and rowspan="3" for "F" to get another row below "G" & "F" won't work, because all (implicit) cells would be empty." If you do it anyway, it looks like this:
Column 1 Column 2 Column 3
A B
C D
E F
G
H
It also says that you can "use to fill an empty cell with dummy content". How do I do that? Raykyogrou0 (Talk) 23:28, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
By writing in the cell. That's it. The cell must exist already. Writing in a cell doesn't change the structure of the table, but it may make the column wider. I have tried to make a table like your link [5]. I can only do it by making a fourth column either before or after the other columns. Without a fourth column, I don't know whether it's possible to make different top borders for Stuff 4 and Stuff 5.
Header 1 Header 2 Header 3
Stuff 1 Stuff 2 Stuff 3
Stuff 4
Stuff 5
Header 1 Header 2 Header 3
Stuff 1 Stuff 2 Stuff 3
Stuff 4
Stuff 5

Yes, we understand your problem. Your problem is that you are here to promote a business, as you did with this edit, and that is not what Wikipedia is for. You are not going to succeed. I advise you to give up. Maproom (talk) 07:16, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
We're all content writers. You should not be writing about your own business, or a business you are working for. That presents a clear conflict of interest. Maproom explained it perfectly. I'm only chiming in so that it's clear to you that promotion of any kind is unacceptable in the Wikipedia community. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 07:33, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You not only promoted your business on your own page but also vandalised existing articles by adding spam links, e.g., [6] [7] [8], and several other edits. You are warned that if you continue in this way, your account will be permanently blocked from Wikipedia. kashmiri TALK 09:57, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Glenn Melvyn page

Glenn Melvyn

Glenn Melvyn's daughter Janine Mackinlay would like to have a web page on this site with an information page about her father. Glenn Melvyn was a British actor who is credited on IMDb http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0578542/#Actor

A hugely influential but largely unknown writer and actor, he is also quoted in Ronnie Barkers autobiography “Ronnie Barker – The Authorised Biography” by Bob McCabe, it describes the early meeting of Glenn and Ronnie. “A quick trawl through The Stage soon secured some stage management work at Frank Fortescue’s Famous Players, a rep company based in Bramhall, Cheshire. It was here that Barker was to meet one of the most influential men in his career. Glenn Melvyn was the company’s leading man and the man who Barker claims ‘was to teach me everything I ever learned about comedy’. Glenn also taught Ronnie how to stutter and later in his career, Ronnie Barker would base his character Albert Awkright in “Open All Hours” on Glenn’s character Wally Binns from “The Love Match” and “Love and Kisses”. They went on to write many scripts together and when presented with the BAFTA lifetime achievement award in 2007, Ronnie mentioned Glenn at the start of his acceptance speech, with a credit for giving him his first break and teaching him how to stutter.

I am helping to pur the page together but can't quite get to grips with how the references and links work, so the page gets removed as being unvalidated.

Any help please. Thanks Keith on behalf of Janine (and Glenn) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Glennmelvyn (talkcontribs) 09:50, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid that neither you nor Janine are advised to write this article, because your WP:conflict of interest will make it difficult for you to write in the neutral way required. If, after reading the link I gave, you decide to try, then I advise reading WP:your first article for advice on how to go about it. --ColinFine (talk) 12:30, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)I've added a {{reflist}} template to make the references work properly, but I'm afraid with the citations provided, the article won't be acceptable for Wikipedia. IMDb is not considered a reliable source, and neither are personal websites. McCabe's biography of Barker, if it contains some more information about Melvyn, would be a suitable source, but you'll need to locate and cite multiple, reliable, independent sources in order to show that Melvyn meets the basic notability requirements. If, as you say, he is "largely unknown", then it may not be possible to have an article about him here. Yunshui 12:35, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
With the greatest respect to Janine and her late father, please bear in mind that Wikipedia is not a memorial. Also be clear that you understand that any article published about Glenn Melvyn could be edited by any other other user at any time; an article's creator has no editorial control over the content. More help with referencing can be found at Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners. - Karenjc 13:30, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Article Rejection

Hi,

I'm writing an article on a business, Interim Partners, and my article was rejected because of 'bias'. I don't see how it is biased at all - I made sure to use facts, barely any adjectives and no promotion.

One of Interim Partners' competitors, Michael Page, has a Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Page_International. I closely followed pages of Interim Partners' competitors to ensure that I made a correct Wikipedia page. In my opinion, Interim Partners' Wikipedia page is unbiased, and it is certainly a lot less biased than the Wikipedia page that Michael Page have.

I would appreciate it if you could take a second look at the Interim Partners article I am creating (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:AimeeTreasure/sandbox) and either elaborate on how exactly the page is biased or allow me to publish the page.

I look forward to your reply.

Many thanks,

Aimée Treasure

The reason your article was declined can be seen in the edit history - Declining submission: submission is written like an advertisement [9]. Please read WP:CORP. You need to establish the company's notability in the article. At the moment your draft fails to do that and sections such as Corporate and Social Responsibility and Accreditation etc. make the draft look more like an advertisement for the company than an encyclopaedic article. As a comparison with the article you linked above (Michael_Page_International) you'll see that in the lead of that article basic notability is established with the phrase is a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index. CaptRik (talk) 12:19, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) I've seen worse, to be honest - the text of the article needs a bit of tweaking, but generally isn't too bad. Problem is though, that none of the claims therein are verified by reliable sources, which is pretty much a deal-breaker for Wikipedia. The only source provided (the Sunday Times list) doesn't actually mention Interim Partners at all, and there's absolutely nothing in the page to suggest that the company meets the basic inclusion requirements for companies. Before you even start addressing any issues of bias, you need to find multiple, reliable, independent sources which write about Interim Partners in some level of detail, and which verify all of the information in your draft article. Then we can talk about any minor language fixes that need doing. Without sources, the article isn't going to last long even if it's the most neutrally-phrased page on the project. Yunshui 12:23, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(Edit Conflict x2) Other issues i noticed:
• Your lede does not state very well what Interim Partners is. A lede paragraph should sum up informatively what the article is about and in an unbiased manner. See WP:Lede.
• You appear to have proof of notability in how the company ranks, but nothing outside of that from other sources (Similar to what CaptRik said). See WP:Notable.
• Your "Growth and Development" section contains links to other sites, which should not be there. Links to other sites should be either citations or fit into an External Links section at the bottom of the article (if appropriate).
Other than that i'd say you haven't done too bad considering your Conflict of interest, but you do need to rewrite it a bit more for an encyclopaedia, than an advertisement.
These are just issues i noticed after a quick glance. Good luck Jenova20 (email) 12:25, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of Article: Boris Bidjan Saberi

Hello,

I am writing regarding my article for 'Boris Bidjan Saberi' which was deleted. Can you please guide me as to how I can retrieve that article to rework it to better fit the community guidelines? I do not have the original content any longer and retrieving that content would really help me a lot.

Thanks in advance.

Biased article - doesn't reflect the world we live in

The page "Masturbation", which I cannot edit myself, is biased and the people who are opposing my changes, I believe do not share their opinions with the majority of Wikipedia writers/readers. I requested outside opinions but this request was removed, but I don't know why. So I ask people to look at the page, even if you wouldn't normally read such a page, and see how biased it is, and ask yourselves "does this bullsh*t really reflect the world I live in?" and then look on the discussion page to see my proposed changes, which are being opposed by a minority of people with faulty logic. There is something very wrong going on here.

selected quote:

" it is considered a normal part of healthy life today" with no reference. Opinion, and they will not remove it.

-- No it is not. I do not believe it is entirely socially acceptable in any society, (apart from a few microcultural examples e.g. certain indigenous tribes) and in many conservative/religious societies (e.g. Islamic countries, many rural areas across the world) it is not acceptable at all. They are confusing the views of science and medicine (which does not 100% say it is fine, hence the use of terms like "excessive masturbation", "compulsive masturbation" in medical and psychological publications) with the views of society. I proposed then to split these views, but it was again opposed. They will not even allow mention that masturbation is illegal in public in most countries, apparently that is "not on topic". In some countries, you would face the death penalty for masturbating in public. The article talkes about events (presumably in Western cosmopolitan settings) where a group of perverted people are allowed to masturbate as part of a festival/event, called a "Masturbate-a-thon". I point out that these people would be stoned to death very quickly if they tried that perversion in many countries. Let's have a page that is not biased, is not a "how -to- masturbate" manual, and includes other balanced views.

-- The requests I made to change the article and make it less biased were opposed by quoting some Wikipedia rules. I studied these rules in detail and in every case they are falsely applied to this scenario. I also found out that according to these rules, many, many issues involving content of the page which supports the overall biased view. The rules are being selectively applied by a minority to maintain a biased page which does not, I believe represent the views of all.

-- I am very disillusioned by this experience. I used to read Wikipedia with interest and admiration, but now everything I see will be suspect in my eyes. How do I know it is not the same scenario-- biased opinion rather than reality? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.183.140.25 (talk) 12:11, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Adding my Wiki Page

I'm a new user here, and this is probably a dumb question, but my article keeps getting rejected. I am a professional drummer, and have played on several major label recordings over the past 5 years including Cee-Lo, Gnarls Barkley, and others. I added my own "user" page to wikipedia and then linked to it from Cee-Lo's page, for instance. (Because my name already exists on his page, it just hadn't been linked to anywhere).

Can anyone tell me if this is best/right way to add myself to Wikipedia? Why does it keep getting rejected?

Pages i've mentioned: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Bradhagen http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bright_Lights_Bigger_City http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lady_Killer_(album)

Thanks for your help!

Bradhagen (talk) 14:52, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid there is no best way to add yourself to Wikipedia, because you are strongly discouraged from ever doing so: see WP:autobiography for more information. On your user page User:Bradhagen you are welcome to share as much or as little about yourself as a Wikipedia editor that you wish to, but you should not attempt to write an article about yourself there or anywhere else. --ColinFine (talk) 14:55, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Well, for starters you are generally encouraged not to create an article about yourself due to Conflict Of Interest. You sound Notable enough, but your article would need citations from reliable sources to verify the content is true. WP:BIO is also a useful place for information, and i expect you to at least read WP:Your first article for more advice in this area. Thanks Jenova20 (email) 15:05, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) - Creating a page about yourself is discouraged and will most likely be deleted. The everyday rule of thumb in this situation is If a person, company or group meets the nobility guidelines someone else will write about that subject. Please review Advice for editors who may have a conflict of interest. Cheers, Mlpearc (powwow) 15:14, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to pile on the bad news, but I've removed the link that you added to Bright Lights Bigger City. We don't allow wikilinks to go from an article to a user page, except in very rare circumstances. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 18:43, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The link didn't go to userspace, it was a red link to where that article would eventually be moved to (Bradley Hagen). See WP:Red link for basic information. Do you want to revert yourself for what was an unhelpful removal of a single red link or should i? Thanks Jenova20 (email) 19:43, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
...Actually i think i'm defending something else. I wikilinked Brad Hagen at The Lady Killer (album). Apologies John, i thought that last post was to me. The timezone differences are messing my replies up (See conversation below for context). Jenova20 (email) 19:46, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Why has my time zone changed?

For some reason i am now seeing edits i make appear 1 hour behind. I am still set to London time but it is displaying my edits 1 hour behind. This must be a bug as it did not do this recently. Anyone know more? Thanks Jenova20 (email) 15:44, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia uses UTC - due to it being BST atm, all edits appear 1 hour behind - they will go in sync when you go back to GMT. Mdann52 (talk) 15:47, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm pretty ignorant of things like this to be honest. I do not know anything about UTC or BST at all. Do you know when things will go back to "normal" or do i have to do something to fix it? Thanks Jenova20 (email) 15:52, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You can set your time zone at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-datetime. It doesn't affect times in signatures but for those you can try "Change UTC-based times and dates, such as those used in signatures, to be relative to local time" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:01, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Or you can wait until 27 October, when British Summer Time ends, and the UK goes back to Greenwich Mean Time. For almost all practical purposes GMT = UTC, so you are on UTC during the winter, but an hour ahead during the summer. Wikipedia uses UTC, as the local dates and times of editors around the world can be up to 26 hours apart (26, not 24, see List of UTC time offsets for the explanation) - Arjayay (talk) 16:29, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
My time zone is set and it displays the right time. But when i sign i see everything 1 hour behind and it's irritating as it makes following posts a little more difficult (for a dyslexic). Thanks Jenova20 (email) 19:40, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

New editor help?

I am not a new editor, and I am also not good at talking to individuals on their talk page. However, I frequently see new editors bombarded with "canned" messages that take the "bombarder" seconds to post, but must totally discourage the new editor. Any advice to such new editors? Thanks in advance, XOttawahitech (talk) 15:45, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The intention of these canned messages is not to discourage the newcomer. However I agree that it is the likely effect. My advice to new editors is to start very cautiously, fixing typos and suchlike until they feel more confident, so as not to attract the attention of the people who post these patronising messages. Maproom (talk) 16:47, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you click on that picture (in any article), or on the link, you'll go to here, and you can see the link for full-size version of the photo. Interlanguage links

Hi, The English wp version of Flag and coat of arms of Pennsylvania is coupled on Wikidata to Q3702043 with the Spanish and Italian versions, while all of the other language wikipedia articles are coupled to Q18983. I have little (or indeed no) understanding of how wikidata works, so how can the two be combined into one so that all of the interlanguage links show up correctly on all the articles (presumably that's what "right" would look like)? Thanks danno_uk 22:11, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm no expert on Wikidata conflicts but the challenge with wikidata:Q18983 and wikidata:Q3702043 is that Spanish and Italian have separate articles about the Flag of Pennsylvania and the Coat of arms of Pennsylvania, so there has to be separate Wikidata entries for the flag and for the coat of arms. The English article covers both. All the other languages appear to only have an article about the flag, at least judged by the article title – I haven't examined whether the articles also mention the coat of arms. I don't know whether there is a better solution than choosing one of the two for the English article. It's currently under Coat of arms. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:44, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to start a new entry for a local small town brewery called "The Damascus Brewery" and it does not show up. The help desk people in the chat room for wikipedia said that they could see it and that it was all set to be reviewed but now I don't see it as ever being created, denied, or anything. Does its entry still exist? Do I need to go through the process of writing the article again? thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adamthefirecracker (talkcontribs) 22:58, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
