    Landing gear problems

united airlines bozeman mt landing gear would not lower 8/5/2013 for 35 minutes, they weren't sure landing gear was locked so passengers had to be in crash position for landing — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.189.56.33 (talk) 01:45, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Is there an article about this aviation incident? If so, discuss at the article talk page. If not, was the incident notable enough for an article? Robert McClenon (talk) 02:52, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Per WP:AIRCRASH there would only be an article if the plane actually crashed. Technical problems are a daily routine ocurrence for airliners and of no lasting significance or notability unless the incident results in a change in the law/regulations or the aircraft's design or manufacturing process. Ref tag question

What is the tag to use when a cited reference does not support or even contain the content it supposedly sources? I believe I've seen it before but can't recall what it is. OccamzRazor (talk) 05:10, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Probably {{Failed verification}} or {{irrelevant citation}}. RudolfRed (talk) 05:16, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted article - Sadat Institute of Higher Education

Hi Everyone, I am the Publishing Manager of Sadat Institute of Higher Education[1]. I wanted to create a page describing my university, when I created it was nominated for speedy deletion, they said I violated the rules, however I am the owner of the website which I copied text from it is www.sadat.edu.af now what to do? — Preceding unsigned comment added by SayedAzeemSadat (talkcontribs) 08:17, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Question title added. AndrewWTaylor (talk) 09:28, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you copied text from a copyright website, then Wikipedia will regard that text as a copyright violation unless the copyright owner explicitly licences it according to the procedure in WP:Donating copyright materials. If you own the copyright, then it is open to you to donate the text in that way, and that will clear the copyright problem. However, text from a subject's own website is usually not appropriate for a Wikipedia article, because text from the website is usually too promotional in tone. It is right and proper for the institution's own website to speak of it in a promotional tone, but Wikipedia requires neutral language.
In fact, if you are employed by the institute, you probably should not edit such an article at all, as you have a conflict of interest. Your best course is to find the multiple reliable sources, independent of the subject (such as newspapers or books) which discuss the institution in some depth, and request and article at requested articles. --ColinFine (talk) 10:06, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Christopher Miles (Director) page

I have been a fan of the director Christopher Miles work for some time and even wrote a paper on him for a college course. I found his page, which had warnings across the top about not being enough citations to verify sources of information. I have been through it in some detail and added citations where I know them to apply. Have I done enough for this warning to be removed or do I need to do more? Or perhaps this is an automated process which just happens when Wikipedia notices the changes? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Merlin Energy (talkcontribs) 09:07, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Merlin. Looking through the article, it appears that you have done an excellent job! The article certainly doesn't need the tag anymore (which, by the way, is manually placed there by editors). I'll go back through with a fine-tooth comb and tag any more wrinkles with a {{citation needed}} tag, but you've definitely done well. Thanks for your hard work! Deadbeef 09:14, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the feedback too Deadbeef. Now feeling inspired to look at others :) Merlin Energy — Preceding unsigned comment added by Merlin Energy (talkcontribs) 09:18, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have just been going through the Wikipedia layout guidelines to see if I can get that warning removed too and it appears to comply as far as I can make out with the possible exception of not having a picture in the box on the top right with his birth date etc. Do you have any suggestions or comments? Merlin Energy (talk) 09:48, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It appears that this has been resolved. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 18:49, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Adding "Authority control"

Dear Wikipedia Help Desk Team Editors:

An inquiry addressed to Wikipedia Information Team concerning "Authority control" responded with a referral to your department.

The EN, DE, ES Wikipedia articles about José Bernal require "Authority control" to provide easy access to readers doing research on this Cuban-American artist, 1925-2010: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jos%C3%A9_Bernal, because there is a very large number of people named Jose Bernal, at least one Mexican artist and many other artists whose names include the name "Bernal."

The art of Cuban-American José Bernal, whose Wikipedia link is noted above, is published in books, articles, catalogs, monographs. Also, it is in 13 art museums, one in Spain and twelve in the U.S.A., and his artworks continue to be incorporated in art museum collections and museum exhibitions. Therefore it would be a significant and helpful addition to his EN, DE, ES articles to have "Authority control." Unfortunately, attempts to follow the guidelines in Wikipedia's "Authority control" link haven't been successful, even with assistance from Wikipedia volunteers and staff of the Smithsonian Institution. For this reason I seek assistance from the expertise of your Help Desk Team, as it was suggested by the Information Team. With appreciation for your consideration of this request, Ulla1540 (talk) 15:14, 14 August 2013 (UTC)Ulla1540[reply]

This must be about Wikipedia:Authority control. I, for one, had never heard of Authority control. I wish you luck in finding someone who understands it. Maproom (talk) 18:09, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have at times added {{Authority control}} to articles; it's quite straightforward, just a matter of searching the various databases and copying the identifiers into the template. But I have had no luck finding José Antonio Severino Bernal Muñoz in LoC, VIAF, ISNI or OGND. There are of course a lot of José Bernals, but I couldn't find one whose dates matched. He may just not be sufficiently well-known. Sorry about that, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 23:06, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    tabs help

    Hi,

I am trying to figure out how to make/ configure/ or use a template to create tabs on my project page that look like these tabs: Wikipedia: GLAM/National Archives and Records Administration. I have not been able to find any templates or sources that help me do this. I want to give the tabs my own titles and have them appear blank when I first get them so I can fill them in.

Please help me figure out how to create tabs, or link me to a good template for tabs. Thanks!!!!!!! OR drohowa (talk) 15:57, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The tabs on Wikipedia:GLAM/National Archives and Records Administration are implemented through Wikipedia:GLAM/National Archives and Records Administration/Tab header. You can use a similar format and modify it to suit your requirements. - David Biddulph (talk) 16:22, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

template on my article says i dont have reliable sources

Please review my article Hanwant Mal Lodha, the template says that I do not have reliable sources or references on my article, there are no references available on the internet but the information is available on the subject's blogs which wikipedia wont allow me to add in references, other information are from the law journals, which we have referred from, and i have written in the references section. If you think they are suitable then please remove the template. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.99.194.189 (talk) 16:26, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have moved your message to the foot of the page, as that is where new messages are found. - David Biddulph (talk) 16:31, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Blogs are almost never reliable sources, and the subject's own publications are not independent, and so are not regarded as adequate either for notability or for supporting content other than uncontroversial factual information. References are required to be inline to identify the information that they are supporting (see WP:Referencing for beginners). Finally, the "reported cases" that you have adduced almost certainly say nothing about the subject except that he represented certain parties. In order to have a Wikipedia article about a subject, there must be multiple reliable secondary sources, independent of the subject, which have written at length about the subject; so in this case it would require articles in books or journals written about Hanwant Mal Lodha. These do not have to be online, or in English, but they have to exist and be referenced in the article, otherwise the article fails to establish that the subject is notable (in Wikipedia's special sense) and the article will be deleted. --ColinFine (talk) 17:44, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How can I temporarily take down a wiki page that I published too soon? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 152.5.254.13 (talk) 19:13, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you're the only contributor, you can just redirect the page to another relevant page (for example, redirecting a page about an album to the album's artist) or if you want it actually deleted you can put {{Db-g7}} at the top and an administrator will delete it shortly. Scarce2 (talk) 19:45, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You could also, assuming that you have an account and Move rights, move it to a sandbox under your username and then have the redirect deleted. Dismas|(talk) 21:02, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How to create a square of 4 images

Hi, I'm wondering how I would go about putting together 4 images into a square shape. I know how to put them all in a horizontal line, but I'd like it to be 2 on top, then 2 on the bottom. All I should need is the template. Thanks! Delaywaves • talk 00:58, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Something like this, perhaps?
Hope that helps, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 01:10, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You can make your own table like above. {{Image array}} or {{Photomontage}} are also possible, depending on the formatting you want. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:18, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That photo montage looks perfect! I have two questions. First, do you know if I could somehow put the caption more "inside" the box?
    Example caption
I inserted the montage that I'm planning, and as you can see, the caption is sort of off to the side, as opposed to inside the box like a normal thumbnail photo. Secondly, do you know how to align the photo on the right side of the page? Delaywaves • talk 01:46, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    Example caption
I think it's mainly intended for infoboxes. If that's not how you want to use it then the source shows some undocumented parameters. Here I used | text = Example caption | position = right. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:28, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Works perfectly! Thank you very much. Delaywaves • talk 15:35, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Convert weights to stone?

How common is it for people to report their weight in stones? Is this something that we should be adding to infoboxes for people's weight? If so, what if they are American or of some other nationality that doesn't use stones on a regular basis? I realize that we used both feet and meters or pounds and kilos but since stones are so limited in their acceptance/use. Dismas|(talk) 03:46, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There are only three countries in the world which haven't officially metricated, the USA, Libya and Burma. As you say, the US doesn't use stones. Libya and Burma are not primarily English speaking countries. I see no place for conversions to stones. HiLo48 (talk) 03:58, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There is a difference between being "officially metricated" and the old units being out of use. Many British people still describe their weight in stones, though I don't know what statistics are available on the proportion who do so. As is mentioned in the article on stones, the unit is still used in Britain to describe the weight of such sportsmen as boxers and jockeys, and it is similarly used for oarsmen at Henley Royal Regatta. Whether it should be used in an infobox probably depends on the context. - David Biddulph (talk) 04:13, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
In my experience British people measure their weight either in Kg or in stones and pounds, never just in pounds. So I would say that this is an example of WP:ENGVAR: if there is reason to give the weight of a British person (which there hardly ever will be, apart from certain sports) it should be in Kg and stones/pounds. -- ColinFine (talk) 10:05, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
An annoyance (to British ears) of the film Bridget Jones's Diary was the way she reported her weight in pounds only, rather than stones and pounds (as I believe she did in the original book). AndrewWTaylor (talk) 10:54, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No, if I have a book info box, then the title is italic.--I am One of Many (talk) 06:34, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Template:Infobox book, yup. I answered my own question.--I am One of Many (talk) 06:36, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well done! The book infobox, along with other infoboxes such as film, does cause the title to be displayed in italics.  drewmunn  talk  07:15, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
And if you don't want to use an infobox, adding the template {{italic title}} in the article will also cause the article's title to appear in italics. Deor (talk) 20:06, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Many similar user names

While correcting some cut and paste moves, I came across this article: Guy Huygens. Checking the editing history, I found that it had been editing be various editors whose names began with the word Frank. It looks like someone was creating a new user name for each edit. Is this a problem, and if so, should anything be done about it? —Anne Delong (talk) 06:43, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple accounts are perfectly acceptable if they are correctly used. Many Wikimedia employees have multiple accounts to differentiate work edits from hobby contributions. Similarly, you may choose to have one account that focusses on a specific area, and another on a different area. However, it is usually good form to note that you have another active account on each of the user accounts' home page. See WP:SOCK#LEGIT for information on this. However, if the multiple accounts are used to evade sanctions or guidelines, as seems to be the case here (after a cursory glance through), then it is simple sock-puppetry. For information on how to handle a possible case of sock-puppetting read the guidelines on the topic. There are range of tools and methods that may help you, and a range of more knowledgable sock-puppet investigators to help if you want assistance. Finally, apply the duck test: "If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck". In this case, if they look like a sock-puppet, they probably are!  drewmunn  talk  07:13, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sure Anne's instinct is right, there has to be something wrong here. The article appears to have been created as an uncredited translation from fr.wp. That article has also been edited by many Franks, and was created as a more-or-less straight copy-paste from here (2009 version of that page). Unfortunately the English version of the same page does not seem to have been archived, so it's hard to see if ours was copied straight from it. Even if it hasn't, I think (but am fully open to correction) that a translation of a copyvio is still a copyvio. I suspect it should be blanked as such. Thanks for asking rather than just going ahead and doing it. The guideline is WP:Conflict of interest. It's probably better for you not to do it, but to put in a request at WP:Requested articles; but if you do some of the legwork by finding the multiple substantial references in independent reliable sources vthat are required to establish notability, that may make your request more attractive to a potential editor. --ColinFine (talk) 10:08, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Citation template markup format

Hi, I'm a fairly experienced editor but I have a question about citation templates. In the page markup I usually put separate template fields on separate lines to make the markup more readable:

    <ref>{{cite book
      | last =
      | first =
      | title =
      . . .
     }}</ref>

rather than <ref>{{cite book | last = | first = | title = . . . }}</ref> I've never noticed any difference in the operation of the template between these two formats. However, a while ago someone said not to do that; he said something about the page couldn't be searched properly if the fields were on separate lines. I can't remember where I read this, and I couldn't find anything in the help pages about it. So I thought I'd check with you experts. Is there anything wrong with breaking the citation template between separate lines? Thank you for your help. --ChetvornoTALK 08:03, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The only possible reason of the top of my head that this could cause an issue would be with the line numbers on revisions, although these rarely make sense anyway. I personally find that placing each parameter of different lines makes it a bit harder to tell where you are in the source, as finding distinct paragraphs can be harder. However, I understand the reasons behind it, and respect them also. If you do find that there is a viable reason for you not to place them across lines, maybe look into the ProveIt tool, which give you a bit of a more intuitive interface to work from with sources.  drewmunn  talk  08:35, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
When I have come across this style of formatting in a page I have been editing, I have been grateful. It makes it much easier to spot where the main text resumes after the </ref> tag. I shall consider using it myself. Maproom (talk) 13:33, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that's how I feel; a chunk of markup with a lot of "horizontal" format citation templates is almost unreadable. But a lot of editors feel differently, and will actually come along and change the format of my citation templates to the more compact "horizontal" format. However the ProveIt bot that Drewmunn suggested above looks like it might be a big help. I'm going to give it a try. Thank you both for the courteous help! I personally prefer the multi-line approach, but I have seen them get collapsed onto a single line automatically by VisualEditor, or for the data to end up at the start of the next line, instead of up in the correct place next to the relevant parameter. The bug hasn't got a priority set, so it may be a while before it's fixed. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 21:41, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You might find somebody who can help you at the miscellaneous reference desk , but I think you would probably have better luck consulting a Honda dealer. I was going to say the computer reference desk until I googled to find out what kind of a thing the Honda Pilot is - it was the reference to a disc that confused me --ColinFine (talk) 10:15, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Updating company logo with new version? I am stuck!

    Dear Wikipedia

I represent the Australian International School in Singapore. We have recently changed the school logo but the Wikipedia page for the school is still showing the old crest, I can't for the life of me work out how to update this - it's important to us that people see the new logo (we've had a few cases recently of outside providers coming in to present to us, and they have lifted the old logo fromt the Wikipedia page assuming it is still current).

You may check our website www.ais.com.sg to verify this information.

If you could update the page with the new logo or give me simple instructions on how I might go about that I would be very grateful.

    Kind regards

Claire Ettinger Communications Manager — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ais singapore (talkcontribs) 10:55, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Claire. First off, you should change you user name. Names that suggest a user represents and is working on behalf of an organisation are not allowed. Secondly, you should read WP:IMAGES and WP:UPLOAD for instructions on how to upload images. Only confirmed users can do so. Your account will be auto-confirmed after four days and ten edits, or you can ask for immediate confirmation. I can't find the link for that ATM but I'm sure someone else will shortly. As I assume the school will want to maintain copyright control of the image, it should be uploaded to en:Wikipedia itself, and not to the Wiki Commons. I hope that helps. Rojomoke (talk) 12:56, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
To enlarge on what Rojomoke said, it should probably be uploaded to Wikipedia because we're guessing the School will not want to licence it, so it will need to be uploaded according to the very restrictive rules for using non-free content. Note that you (and the school) do not have control of the article itself, and indeed you are discouraged from editing it (though updating the logo will be fine). Please see WP:Conflict of interest. --ColinFine (talk) 16:22, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Conflict of Interest, Company Article

    Resolved

DISCLOSURE: I am an employee of the United Hospital Fund, and I am seeking to help correct inaccuracies on the article about this company.

The United Hospital Fund (UHF) is a nonprofit health policy research organization in New York City. I am an employee of UHF, and I recently noticed that someone created an article about UHF that contains numerous inaccuracies. I have set up a user account to correct these inaccuracies and suggest more relevant content.

I want to be very careful to follow WP’s COI guidelines. Following the advice on the COI page and other helpdesk/forum discussions on company articles, here are the steps I’ve taken so far:

    • Read up on COI policy, WP:BFAQ, and other relevant guidelines.
    • Created an identity and user page indicating my employment at UHF.
    • On the Talk page of the article on UHF, pointed out the inaccuracies and suggested broad changes.
    • Left a related note on the Talk page of the user who created the page and wrote the article. (No response.)
    • On a subpage of my user page, drafted an updated article on UHF, following WP’s guidelines on NPOV, notability, sources, etc.
    • Disclosed my relation to the subject at every step.

I’d now like to ask for the attention and advice of experienced editors and the community at large. Is it appropriate to ask a neutral editor to review what I’ve put together on the subpage of my user page? Other suggestions on what I should be doing next?

Relevant pages are linked to above; the subpage where I’ve drafted additional language about UHF is here: User:Miles_at_UHF/draft_updates_on_United_Hospital_Fund.

Thanks very much for your help.

    Miles at UHF (talk) 14:08, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Um, Wow. If every person who wanted the wikipedia page about their company/organization improved did what you have done, I'd die happy and think Jimbo Wales would be promoted to God. Having said that, there a *few* *minor* comments on the proposed new article.
    • I see that you used the old *further reading* as a reference, I know you said the old reference 1 was not useable in the new version of the article, is the old reference 2?
    • You may want to look at {{cite doi}} and {{cite pubmed}} for the references out of journals, that way all that needs to be in the article is the doi or pubmed and the information is pulled by a "bot" from databases with that information in it (and it only has to exist in one place even if multiple articles use it.
However *both* issues can be dealt with after the new information has been placed there. You may also want to put a message on User talk:Kipd letting him know since he started the article back in 2010 and contributed the most to it. If no one more experienced has copied this over within a day or so or raised a *significant* objection, I'll move it as soon as I can.Naraht (talk) 18:33, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Naraht, thank you very much for your review, encouragement, and suggestions! In answer to your minor points:
    • The old reference 2 isn’t flat-out wrong -- it does describe the association’s fundraising efforts of that year (1893) -- but it’s not particularly relevant. (There are dozens of similar New York Times articles from the late 19th century reporting on the association’s annual fundraising activities.)
    • Thanks for the suggestion about the citation bots. I’ll look into them in the next few days.
I did leave a brief note on kipd’s user talk page, I’ll add another after the changes are up. (And if other questions come up, I’ll keep an eye out for them on the United Hospital Fund talk page and my user page, rather than here at the helpdesk.)
Thanks again. Miles at UHF (talk) 19:57, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I read your note on kipd's page, that seems fine, but I looked at his contributions page and it appears that he has only edited on two days in the last two years, so I wouldn't wait on his response to do anything. I've copied your draft to mainspace and started making tweeks there.Naraht (talk) 21:11, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I found an incorrect information in your website....

    To Whom It May Concern

Firstly, I would like to show my respect for your managing this valuable website. My name is Hyewon Yang. I am a student and a member of the Voluntary Agency Network of Korea (VANK) in Korea. VANK is a non-government, volunteer organization, composed of students ranging from elementary school to college and adults who wish to tell correct information about Korea to foreign textbooks and publishing companies.

I would like to inform you that your website includes information that seriously distort image of Korea and that could develop into diplomatic problem between Korea and Japan. We Koreans were surprised to see that your website marks Korea’s island Dokdo as Liancourt Rocks. Please refer to this link of your website: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/ks.html

The name Liancourt Rocks is originated from France’s whaling vessel Le Liancourt that discovered Dokdo in 1849. Even though Korea, with sovereign control over the island, uses an official name “Dokdo,” temporary term named by French ship is used by your institution and is spreading globally. This is a big problem as people throughout the world recognize “Liancourt Rocks” as standard name.

Now, you might wonder why Korea is so sensitive about the correct name of Dokdo.

Dokdo is one of the most loved islands in Korea and is Korea’s one of major fishing grounds. In addition, Ulleungdo near Dokdo is the global tourist site. For instance, in 2010, world famous travel magazine, announced that Korea’s Ulleungdo is one of the best recreational site chosen by world’s tourists. According to this magazine, Ulleungdo offers spectacular scenery, preserving the nature from ancient times, and has abundant source of water unlike other islands; neighboring waters, with Dokdo, is the biggest fishing ground in the East Sea. On clear days, Dokdo can be seen from Ulleungdo with naked eye. Historically, for 1500 years, Ulleungdo and Dokdo were referred to as the island of mother and son, which indicates its important close relationship.

Therefore, your institution calling this domestically and internationally crucial island “Liancourt Rocks” will confuse many foreigners and ships visiting Ulleungdo and Dokdo. In addition, your institution might be responsible for physical and mental damage done to Koreans. Above all things, negligence of the term “Liancourt Rocks” would build uncomfortable feelings from Koreans toward your institution and country, and this would become an obstacle to our countries’ friendship.

As a member of VANK, I request that your institution use “Dokdo” instead of “Liancourt Rocks” in all parts of the website that provides information of Korea. For more information on geographical designation of Dokdo in Korean tourist guidebook, visit this website: http://prkorea.com/tour/img/dokdo.gif

We know that your website is putting much effort in understanding other cultures, countries, and designations in this global, informational 21st century. Particularly, your website is contributing towards many people’s correct understanding of other countries’ geographical names and cultures.

We hope you listen to our request kindly.

This is the English-language Wikipedia. As such, we go by the principle that articles are given the names most commonly used in the English language for the subject. It's as simple as that. This does not mean that the Wikimedia Foundation is taking any position on disputes regarding the subject; we're just following our own rules. I'm sorry if you don't find this satisfactory. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:00, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Like most programming languages, the parser function language doesn't allow natural language constructs like "if a is 1 or 2 or 3". But it does support the equivalent of "if a is 1 or a is 2 or a is 3" by using #ifexpr. See Help:Conditional expressions. --ColinFine (talk) 22:35, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I believe it is due to the fact that Jewish is also an ethnic group besides being a religion. There is no "Christian" ethnic group. Dismas|(talk) 20:41, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
But this is a question which has often been debated for particular Wikipedia articles, with some editors adding 'Jewish' to the article on anybody who they believe to be Jewish, and others removing it expect where this is an identity which the subject has explicitly claimed. WP:CATEGRS discusses the issue with respect to categories, but similar principles apply for the content.. --ColinFine (talk) 22:41, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Dear Sirs,

When I log on to Wikipedia, you ask for a donation, yet you refuse to acknowledge me as an inclusion.

I have had my songs released on 23 albums, and a new release pending in Japan, August 2013

I feel that I should be included, and would gladly donate if all things were fair.

If we based article content on whether we received donations from article subjects, we'd soon lose any credibility. You are under no obligation to donate - and we are under no obligation to have an article about you. AndyTheGrump (talk) 20:19, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you fulfil the Wikipedia notability criteria, there is no reason for you not be included as a subject. However, note that we can't keep up to date with every single notable subject, so some things are not added when they should be, or do not get the attention they deserve. This is a byproduct of having a volunteer workforce attempting to tackle such a massive task. If you feel you satisfy the notability requirements, feel free to request the creation of an article at WP:AfC. As the subject, you would be discouraged from personally creating or editing this page, but you could potentially provide some invaluable resources and references.  drewmunn  talk  20:24, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The only attempts that I see where someone tried to create an article about Keith Law were in 2007 and 2010. The 2007 version was too short to explain why the subject was notable enough as a musician to be kept. The 2010 version was moved to your user page in an effort, I suspect, for you to be able to fix it to conform to our layout and style guidelines. Though there's also the fact that we discourage anyone from writing about themselves. The main reason being that most people find it difficult to write about themselves in a neutral and objective way. As for why nobody else has written about Keith Law, I can't say. But we all contribute voluntarily on subjects that are of interest to us. It may just be that one of our contributors just hasn't gotten around to writing about Keith Law just yet. We don't have anyone telling us what to write about. We find a subject that isn't covered yet and, if we have time, write about it. Dismas|(talk) 20:33, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What does (current) mean when you go into your contributions?

Certain articles I have edited have (current) beside them, what does this mean?--Smashton Pumpkin (talk) 20:22, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It means that your edit is the current one, and that no further edits have been made to that page since you changed it. Anything you added is visible to readers.  drewmunn  talk  20:24, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Making my article 'exist.'

I've created a page and this has been accepted after some editing. I was told it needed to be 'cleaned up' and I've done that, and I was told it was 'an orphan' so I've linked to it from suggested pages. These links however shoe that the 'page does not exist.'

The page I've created is 'Skerryvore (Band)'

It opens when I type this in the search page.

What am I doing wrong or what else do I need to do?

    Thanks

Major General David Common Chief USMTM has wrong information

Your Wikipedia article on Major General David Commons, Chief United States Military Training Mission has some wrong information. I just left The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as the U.S. Defense Attaché to the Kingdom. The Chief USMTM does not carry the additional title United State Defense Representative. First this term has been outdated for several years and second the U.S. Defense Attaché carries the title as the Department of Defense and Secretaries representative to the country. Please check your fact. the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh would be a great place to start.

Of course! Delete away. You can put Groucho glasses on them if you want. Your talk page is pretty much under your control. The only things you generally cannot remove are declined unblock requests and speedy deletion tags. See WP:OWNTALK. Although archiving human messages is recommended, for automated notices such as those you wouldn't even normally do that.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:45, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@CousinJohn: Per WP:Talk, you're free to delete any and all postings on your personal user talk page. You can also archive older talk page postings, if for some reason you think you might want to look at them again. For routine newsletters, I personally don't see much point in archiving, but that's just my personal opinion.
The welcome-to-Wikipedia links are really a good place to start, for newcomers like you. But often it's better just to jump in - you've signed up for GOCE newsletters, for example, so every time they have a joint project is an potential opportunity to learn new things. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 03:49, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks in advance. Paul MacDermott (talk) 11:30, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@Paul MacDermott: Since it's not a published source (most likely) it fails the "can I go and verify it" test. If it's published somewhere, then it may be acceptable, but it's still a primary source, and so those rules apply (especially WP:BLPPRIMARY). I'd try to find something else personally. ~Charmlet -talk- 13:47, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Jo Stafford died in 2008, so unless John Huddleston is still alive (unlikely, since he was 25 years old in 1937), WP:BLPPRIMARY wouldn't apply. There is still the problem that it is a primary source though, and technically I'm not sure it can be used to source the fact that the Jo Stafford in our article married a John Huddleston in 1937, though given all the details, it certainly looks valid (ignoring the question as to whether it is actually'published' - opinions seem to differ regarding such documents). What exactly is the certificate being used to verify? AndyTheGrump (talk) 14:15, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, guys. I wanted to use it as a source for the date of her marriage, but it's possible, I guess, that it could concern a different couple who happen to share the same names. This article from Radio Mirror mentions a marriage to a member of her backing group, though no name is given. (see also this which is the full piece). Most published sources date her marriage to Huddleston to 1941, so I guess we'll have to stick with that till a definitive secondary source comes along. Paul MacDermott (talk) 16:06, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@Paul MacDermott: Yeah, being available only by request to an agency is not published in a way that allows easy verification, but why don't you publish it? That is, upload it to the Commons. I've done this in a few contexts. For example, see Kelly pool#Origins where I uploaded a U.S. Census record to the Commons for use in the article. I believe this would take {{PD-ineligible}}. If I'm wrong about that it's PD, or course, back to square one. I disagree that there is any issue whatsoever with it being a primary source. There is no per se stigma attached to primary sources; they are not to be avoided or inferior to secondary source in all contexts. We want secondary source for notability purposes to show the world has taken note of the topic, which is irrelevant here, and view them with suspicion where they are self-published by the subject or are being used for novel interpretations or analyses, which is likewise inapplicable here. An official government issued document showing birth, death, marriage, etc. is often the best source for certain facts contained within it, such as the date of a marriage, date of death, etc. It is essentially impossible for this not to be these two individuals but another two with the same name, given the full matching name, correct ages, places of birth, location of issuance, names of fathers and listed occupations. It's inarguably them and I would use it as the definitive source for the date of their marriage, possible adding a footnote as the the contradiction in some secondary sources.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 16:19, 17 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@Fuhghettaboutit: Thanks, there are a couple of sources available that refer to a marriage—one of them contemporary from 1938, and another from 1951 that discussed her marriage in the context of her pre-Dorsey career—but they're not specific. Someone else has kindly uploaded the marriage licence to Commons (see here and here). If all is well with them I'll add the relevant stuff. Paul MacDermott (talk) 16:40, 17 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
ok, I've cited it. Please could someone check I've done it proberly. Cheers. Paul MacDermott (talk) 17:53, 17 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good except I didn't realize you already had proof they were married at least as of 1937, or at least that's what your recent edit implies. Specifically, you cite the Radio Mirror to April 1937 as providing they were married. If a source is from 1937 and states they were or are married, even if it provided no date at all for the marriage, that is determinative proof they were married at least by the date of that source. If the 1937 source actually provides that they were married, I would change the first part of the footnote to say something like "Although sources such as The Independent and The Boston Globe date the marriage as occurring in 1941,[13][14], a Radio Mirror article published in 1937 mentions their marriage, meaning they had to be married by that year."--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 20:47, 17 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
ok, thanks for taking a look. I changed it over, but erred slightly as the source should be April 1938. The Mirror doesn't specifically mention Huddleston by name, which was why I was unsure if I could use it. Since yesterday I've re-read the Collier's article, which does mention him, and implies that they married around that time. Paul MacDermott (talk) 21:24, 17 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You use {{User infobox}}. It was added yesterday in [3]. You can avoid it by either saying |gender=o or select "Undisclosed" as Gender at Special:Preferences. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:12, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, friend. Maybe because you are male, possibly it has to do with the preferences box that says if you are femmale or male. I have mine in femmale but I don't know why I don't have a femmale icon at the top of my user infobox. I'll make a research. :) Miss Bono [zootalk] 18:15, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Am I misunderstanding something, or has someone decided that the default for the 'User infobox' is 'gender male' rather than 'gender undisclosed'? If so, it clearly needs correcting. AndyTheGrump (talk) 18:18, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That certainly wasn't the intention. BTW, I'm looking into using as a third option Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:50, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe someone can fix it. I don't want to be a male. Miss Bono [zootalk] 18:26, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Mine seems to be undisclosed. Paul MacDermott (talk) 18:21, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Okay... So, this is what went down and how it works... Andy moved the |gender= from inside the box to a subheader per a talk page discussion (if you wanna call it that). Edokter then made a couple minor fixes. I then came along and figured, why not auto-populate this for those that have the preference set in their preferences. It is not set to a default of male, it is set to {{lc:{{{gender|{{Gender:{{#titleparts:{{BASEPAGENAME}}|1}}|m|f|o}}}}}}} which is whatever you set |gender= to OR whatever you have defined as your gender in your Preferences. Happy editing! Technical 13 (talk) 18:36, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The "Wikipedian" text can be overwritten by setting |role= to some other value (linked or not; your choice); this is described in the template's documentation. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:50, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That's interesting. My userpage doesn't specify my gender, and my preferences do say that I am male. Robert McClenon (talk) 23:03, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You don't use {{Infobox user}}. It is this template which has added code to automatically display the gender preference if it has been set. It's still possible for others to see your preference if they know how. For example, {{Gender:Robert McClenon|male|female|undisclosed}} produces: male. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:16, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In the same place you'd type a status update. If there's an "http://", Facebook knows what to do. You might not even need that part, anymore. But if it doesn't work right, try adding it to the beginning. InedibleHulk (talk) 20:51, August 16, 2013 (UTC)

    Other users' sandboxes

Is the content of another user's sandbox free to use? I want to create an article and have discovered another user has an excellent article on the subject in her sandbox which has not been edited since July 2012. She has not made any other contributions recently either. Would it be OK to use it as the basis of an article, with a note on the talk page to that effect? Robina Fox (talk) 20:28, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

My inclination is to just move it into article space. The edit history is preserved, so she gets her props for her work up to July. I would then drop a gracious note on her talk page, and send her a grateful e-mail if that functionality is enabled for her account. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:45, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If the article is pretty much ready for prime time, I would do as Mike suggests as well. If it's not quite ready yet, I'd just make a list of things that you need to do to get it up to par quickly. Then move it. And then make those changes all in one sitting. Just so I wasn't playing in someone else's sandbox. Dismas|(talk) 21:55, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Baba Rampuri article

The Baba Rampuri article is being used as part of a fraud and blackmail scheme. There are factually incorrect statements, references to fraud websites, and defaming material. This goes against the conditions of use of Wkipedia, and certainly against the spirit and intentions of wikipedia. It also cause harm to me personally to be so misrepresented. Multiple Pages on Subject at obscure level

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_election_in_New_Mexico,_1964 is just an example of not one, but many pages that seem to have been created recently by a user. It seems inappropriate for an article for Presidential Election in XXXX state for XXXX year election. All this information can be found on the Presidential Election for XXXX year page. It seems like creating articles just to create them, there's nothing being added that wouldn't be found on the main election page. I ask here because with so many of them created within such a short period of time and being a fairly new user I'm just not sure where to post this to. If there's some new consensus that this is how US Presidential Elections should be handled please let me know. Caffeyw (talk) 05:42, 17 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    WikiArcheology

OK, this one is going to take a real WikiArcheologist...

Recently, at Wikipedia talk:Flow, the following argument was made:

"Of course when you poll a group of Wikipedians right now about how they want to deal with [X], they will say they want [Y]. That's how they currently deal with those things – just like if you'd asked Wikipedians in 2001 how they want to create internal links in Wikipedia, they would have said 'CamelCase!'"

My question is this; was there any real opposition to Wikipedia replacing CamelCase with square brackets? Is that discussion in our history, or was this before we have reliable records? --Guy Macon (talk) 09:33, 17 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I can find, the earliest archived discussion on linking is at the MOS, and it is from 2005 (by which time brackets were already in use). This is not to say it doesn't still exist, but I can't find it anywhere that I think it may be. It's always worth asking an older Wikipedian, as they may remember it. If you still have no luck, try the staff themselves.  drewmunn  talk  17:04, 17 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I spent a couple of hours searching and didn't find anything either. This has my curiosity up; I think it would be fascinating to see how those early decisions were made and how well the predictions that happen during any policy discussion have held up. Has anyone else found anything? --Guy Macon (talk) 20:41, 17 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The earliest revision of Help:link says it was copied from M (meta), and the earliest version of M:Help:Link is from 2004, at which time internal links were already made by brackets. I think maybe User:Patrick, who created that page and is one of the earliest users, might very well be able to shed light (with Echo in place, he should now be informed of this discussion if he logs on, but note that he hasn't made any edits since last month).--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 21:11, 17 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest that before you proceed any further, you read the Wikipedia notability guidelines - in particular WP:AUTHOR. I see nothing in your article so far to indicate that you would meet the guidelines, and unless you do, a biography on you would not be accepted. Note that we need evidence from third party published reliable sources to indicate the level of notability required. Were you to meet the guidelines, the article would in any case need substantial rewriting - it reads more like a resume than an encyclopaedia biography. I would also recommend reading Wikipedia:Autobiography - we strongly discourage autobiographical articles, and generally advise that if people are of sufficient notability to merit a Wikipedia article, it is best left to others to write.
