Miss Universe 2016, will be the 65th Miss Universe pageant. It will be held on 30 January 2017 in the Philippines.[4] Pia Wurtzbach of the Philippines will crown her successor at the end of the event.

Negotiations

Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach on a courtesy call with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte in discussion for hosting the pageant in the Philippines. Behind Wurtzbach is Jonas Gaffud, a beauty pageant trainer.

On 18 July 2016, Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach made a courtesy call with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte in regards to hosting Miss Universe 2016 in the Philippines. Duterte was initially open to the idea but refused to shoulder the expenses through government funding[5] Later reports revealed that the Philippine Department of Tourism clarified that the President was never opposed to the idea of hosting the pageant but only had concerns with the financing.[6]

The Department of Tourism confirmed on 28 July 2016 that the Philippines will host the pageant. According to DOT Media Director Ina Zara, Miss Universe Organization President, Paula Shugart said that other countries were considered to host Miss Universe 2016, but the Philippines has been a prime choice for the organization.[6]

Venue and sponsorship

The Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay, Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Ynares Center in Antipolo City, Clark Expo Amphitheater in Angeles, Pampanga and the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan are being considered by the Department of Tourism as the main venue of the pageant. President Rodrigo Duterte also made requests for the Miss Universe 2016 organizers to stage auxiliary events outside Metro Manila, in locations such as Boracay, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao, Palawan, and Vigan.[7]

The funds needed to stage the pageant in the country will come entirely from the private businesses. Among the reported sponsors are Chinese-Filipino businessman Henry Sy and Japanese billionaire Kazuo Okada. The Okada Manila Luxury Hotel, currently in construction, will serve as the residential venue for the Miss Universe 2016 candidates. The projected expense for the event is $11 million USD.[4]

Sierra Leone will debut at Miss Universe 2016.[3] This is the third time the Philippines is hosting the pageant, previous editions where held in 1974 and 1994.

Designations

  •  Panama – Keity Drennan was appointed Señorita Panamá 2016 at a small ceremony organized by Justine Pasek and Cesar Anel Rodríguez, the national directors of Señorita Panamá pageant after they were appointed the new franchise holders for Miss Universe in Panama. Previously Medcom Corporation under the direction of Marisela Moreno held the franchise for Miss Universe in Panama.
  •  US Virgin Islands – Carolyn Carter was chosen Miss Universe US Virgin Islands 2016 by Tom Youth, national director of Miss Universe US Virgin Islands pageant.
  •  Vietnam – Dang Thi Le Hang was appointed Miss Universe Vietnam 2016 by Tony Nguyen Quoc Toan, national director of Miss Universe Vietnam. Dang was the 2nd runner-up at Miss Universe Vietnam 2015 pageant.

Replacements

  •  Bolivia - Paula Schneider was crowned Miss Bolivia Universo 2015 and was entitled to compete at Miss Universe 2016 pageant, however Schneider resigned in January 2016 citing personal reasons.[94] Antonella Moscatelli, Miss Bolivia Universo 2016 replaces Schneider as Bolivia’s representative to Miss Universe 2016.
  •  Honduras - Sirey Moran, Miss Honduras Universo 2016 was dethroned by Carlos Rivera, the national director of Miss Honduras pageant, after Moran was found attending events without the consent of the organization and had been negotiating on their behalf without their permission.[95] The organization will crown its new representative in November.
  •  Korea - Min-ji Lee, Miss Korea 2015 will not compete at Miss Universe 2016 after Hanju E&M company the organizers of Miss Korea pageant lost the franchise for Miss Universe in Korea to Park Jeong-ah, who will now select the new representative through the Miss Universe Korea pageant to be held in October. Coincidentally Park Jeong-ah also holds the franchise for Miss World in Korea.
  •  Mauritius - Kushboo Ramnawaj was handpicked to represent Mauritius at Miss Universe 2016 by Nevin Rupear, the national director of Estrella Mauritius Organization, after they were appointed the new franchise holders for Miss Universe in Mauritius. Ramnawaj replaces Danika Atchia, Miss Mauritius 2015, who crowned by the previous franchise holder Primerose Obeegadoo and would have represented Mauritius at Miss Universe 2016 otherwise. Ramnawaj was apparently crowned Miss Mauritius 2014 and was supposed to compete at Miss Universe 2015 pageant but was replaced because of a disagreement with the former franchise holder.
  •  Puerto Rico - Brenda Jimenez was crowned as the new Miss Universe Puerto Rico 2016, after Kristhielee Caride the original winner was dethroned due to her dismissive behaviour by Desiree Lowry, the national director of Miss Universe Puerto Rico pageant.[96] Jimenez represented the municipality of Aguadilla at Miss Universe Puerto Rico 2016 and was the 1st runner-up at the pageant.
