Discovery HD World (formerly as Discovery HD) is a satellite and cable TV subscription channel that provides documentary and non-fiction programming; focuses primarily on science, technology, history and culture. It is operated by Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific, a division of Discovery Communications Inc. and available in Australia, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. Discovery HD World is broadcast in HD 1080i with Dolby 5.1 surround sound.[1]

Overview

In 2005, Discovery Network Asia-Pacific launched Discovery HD (now Discovery HD World), the first high-definition channel in Asia and became available in February and December in South Korea and Japan, respectively. On April 1, 2010, Discovery HD was rebranded to Discovery HD World. The service broadcast area is different from its Canadian counterpart, the Discovery World HD. Back in 2002, Discovery Communications launched Discovery HD Theater in the United States. In addition to HD Theater, Discovery Communications offers high-definition services to its sister channel, namely, Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, TLC, Science Channel and Planet Green. And in Asia, it launched three high-definition channels, Discovery HD (now Discovery HD World), Animal Planet HD and TLC HD. In October 2008, Discovery Channel HD was launched in Japan. In February 2010, Discovery HD World India was launched with customized programming in English, Hindi and Tamil.[2]
