The Unite the Right rally was a gathering of alt-right, neo-Nazi, far-right, and/or white nationalist groups in Charlottesville, Virginia, protesting the removal of Confederate monuments and memorials from public spaces, specifically the Robert Edward Lee Sculpture in Emancipation Park.[9]

Speakers scheduled to appear included Tim Treadstone, David Duke, Richard Spencer, Mike Enoch, and League of the South founder Michael Hill.[10][11] During the rally, David Duke stated that the rally intended to fulfill the "promises of Donald Trump."[12][13] During the rally, a car plowed into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing one person and injuring 35.[14] A police helicopter which had been conducting surveillance crashed during the rally; it is believed both people on board were killed.[7]

President Trump blamed the violence on "many sides", stating "We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides. On many sides."

Background

On May 15, 2017, a similar type of protest occurred against the city's plans to remove a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee from a downtown park, which was led by Richard Spencer.[15] The event involved protesters holding torches near the statue. In the same night, there was a candlelight counter-protest which included Black Lives Matter members.[15]

Rally

August 11

A short march involving over 100 Unite the Right protesters took place on the University of Virginia campus on the evening of August 11.[16] Though a chemical spray was allegedly deployed on several marchers, no arrests were immediately reported in connection with the rally.[17][18][19] Most carried tiki torches, with slogans such as "you will not replace us" and "white lives matter" being heard.[16]

August 12

Protesters and counter-protesters gathered at Emancipation Park (formerly known as Lee Park) in anticipation for the rally, but the city of Charlottesville declared the rally an unlawful assembly and Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency shortly before 11 a.m.; as a result, there are conflicting reports as to whether the event is still ongoing, with The New York Times using language that the rally had been "abandoned".[20]

Several fights broke out between opposing protesters; both sides used chemical sprays against each other, and unknown persons released tear gas into the crowd.[21][22]

In a direct message to white nationalists later in the day, Governor McAuliffe, flanked by Charlottesville's mayor and police chief, stated, "You pretend that you are patriots, but you are anything but a patriot... We are stronger than you... You will not succeed. There is no place for you here."[23]

Vehicular crash into counter protesters

On August 12, during the rally, a speeding car plowed into a crowd of people protesting the rally, killing one person and injuring 26 others. Eyewitnesses stated that a silver Dodge Challenger slammed at high speed into another car and then backed up through a thick crowd of people.[24][3][25] Video footage of the incident was captured by one of protesters; people are seen marching down a street while chanting “our streets” before a car is seen speeding and ramming into the group as people start screaming.[26] Shortly after the collision, the driver was arrested.[27][28] The driver was identified as "a skinny white guy with a straggly beard."[29]

Helicopter crash

In the afternoon of August 12, a Bell 407 helicopter owned by the Virginia State Police crashed, killing two police officers who were on board. The crash occurred seven miles southwest of Charlottesville, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The crash is now being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board.[7][30]

According to the Associated Press, the crash is connected to the rally.[30]

Reactions

The rally has been criticized by some civil-rights organizers, anti-racist groups, and anti-fascist groups due to Neo-Nazis, white nationalists and neo-Confederates being scheduled to speak at the event.[31] Other organizations involved include the Daily Stormer,[32] the League of the South, and the National Socialist Movement.[33]

In July 2017, Charlottesville police estimated a turnout of 4,000 people.[34][35] The Southern Poverty Law Center estimated thousands attending.[9] The rally is to protest the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee in Emancipation Park.[36][37]

Airbnb cancelled a number of bookings and accounts when it learned that they were being used by attendees at the rally, citing that such persons had failed to abide by a contract that states to "accept people regardless of their race, religion, national origin, ethnicity, disability, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, or age."[38]

Senator Tim Kaine said that he hoped it would encourage dialogue, but condemned the rally.[39] University of Virginia president Teresa A. Sullivan urged students to stay away from the rally due to possible violence between the far-right and anti-fascists.[40][31]

Michael Signer, mayor of Charlottesville, blamed President Trump for inflaming racial bigotry and said he was disgusted that white supremacists came to his town.[41]

President Trump's response

President Donald Trump responded by saying "We all must be united & condemn all that hate stands for. There is no place for this kind of violence in America. Let's come together as one!", adding that he condemned "in the strongest possible terms" what he called an "egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides." He further stated, "what is vital now is a swift restoration of law and order and the protection of innocent lives."[42]

David Duke tweeted in response that Trump should "take a good look in the mirror & remember it was White Americans who put you in the presidency, not radical leftists."[43] The Daily Stormer rejoiced that Trump did not condemn the far-right and was implicitly calling the anti-fascists haters.[44]
