Help with an Article

Hi, I've been working on the article Thomas Parry (Chennai merchant), which has several issues. For example, it needs more references, and some of of the information in it contradicts itself. There is another page on Thomas Perry in the Welsh Wikipedia, and I think that the information from each page could be used to improve the other. However, I'm rather new here and I don't understand Welsh, so I may not be the most qualified person for the job. Can anyone help? Pagesdish (talk) 16:46, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

WP:WEB

WP:WEB can be tricky, if a source is IN (=used on various pages) it might pass as RS, if it's OUT (not used) it generally fails as RS, a chicken or the egg issue. If a website exists for years, is "noted" by reliable independent 3rd party sources, but not (yet) used, how can the notability be checked here? I'm aware of w:de:Relevanzcheck, but w:de:Relevance is not exactly the same idea as w:en:Notability. Two cases I'm currently interested in:
The HYpocriteDEsign magazine looks good for me, it's used as source outside of enwiki (~7 pages on google:Hypocritedesign), two uses on enwiki, not counting Talk:Hypocrite (disambiguation)#HyocriteDesign.
Harder, Sara Doucette has a website hellothemushroom.com, noted by some 3rd parties,[1][2][3][4] and one of her irregular book reviews was quoted by Amazon in an "editorial review" (NOT customer review). I'm not hot about this source, I added it, somebody else removed it after discussing the issue, fine. But I'm still curious if her site actually is notable and unreliable simultaneously, so far I thought that this is a stunt for The Sun, The Examiner, Breitbart, CNET, or similar crap, not mostly harmless living persons. –84.46.52.48 (talk) 19:37, 27 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The archive bot moved that to 930, but I'm actually still waiting for an answer or a better suggestion, maybe WP:RS/N? –84.46.52.44 (talk) 22:05, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

What is Classed as sourced Material

Hi Guys could you please explain in simple terms what is classed as sourced material as not all information can be found on the internet, for example POP magazine articles, Records store articles going back to 70's, Newspaper articles, pop annuals as this information may not be available on the internet and concerned if my edit something, it get undone. can someone please advise. xxxxx — Preceding unsigned comment added by Brosisboss (talkcontribs) 17:49, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Brosisboss and Welcome to the Teahouse! Sources do not have to be online, but they have to be reliable as defined at WP:RS. About how to add citations to WP, start at Help:Referencing for beginners. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:24, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång: please note the above editor has now been blocked as a sockpuppet of an editor with a long history of sockpuppetry. What they are actually asking (and have been blocked for before) is if they can upload scans of those articles (which is against copyright) and then use them directly as references in articles. I and other editors have tried explaining many times that they can reference material that is not available online if they source it properly, but they refuse to listen. my details on an article keeps getting deleted

Who decides if it is advertising? Hypothetically, if the movie is about Black Doodler, why wouldn't it be allowed? Or likewise, a book is written about the subject of a Wikipedia page. Why wouldn't that be appropriate? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ubermoviefan (talkcontribs) 17:33, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I've posted a detail on the Black Doodler page. i posted in the media section my imdb of my film "SKETCHY". this detail keeps getting deleted. the person deleting my detail say that im advertising. How is it advertising when its just a fact a film is in production of the BLACK DOODLER? Also, at the same time another detail is in that same section stating that someone is writing a piece for a series but has no proof or links to the fact and its kept up? this is very confusing. Bigbabybytes (talk) 16:59, 26 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Bigbabybytes Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. Unless your film is written about by independent reliable sources that show how it meets Wikipedia's special definition of notability written at WP:NFILM, it would not merit an article here. IMDB is not a reliable source as it is user editable. This is a volunteer project, inappropriate content can only be addressed if it is detected or pointed out. 331dot (talk) 17:07, 26 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. Thank you for the explanation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bigbabybytes (talkcontribs) 17:11, 26 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

What are the notability guidelines for bus station articles?

So I randomly reached Sunshine Plaza bus station and was shocked by it's existence. So now I can literally create pages for each of my local bus stations? This is a global free-for-all online encyclopedia, but that doesn't mean we can dump in whatever seems convenient. I was considering MultiAFDing all of them under "Bus interchanges" at Template:TransLink (South East Queensland) bus stations, but asking here would be wiser. @ImmortalWizard: Some discussion history here: Talk:Bus transport in Queensland. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 21:55, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Timtempleton: that didn't lead to anything unfortunately. Besides, that article is vastly different than about bus stations anyways. THE NEW ImmortalWizard(chat) 21:18, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@ImmortalWizard: Some editors have gone so far as thinking each darned bus stop where they live is notable. Makes me want to get on a bus and go tell them they're not. Explanatory Footnotes

Dear Teahouse host. I seem to have a problem with the Explanatory Footnote (efn) template, when I define several explanatory footnotes in a list inside the Notelist template and cite a reference in its content using the Shortened Footnote (sfn) template. Please see the article Jean-Antoine de Mesmes (1640-1709) (9:35, 29 March 2019), which throws a "cite error: A list-defined reference named ... is not used in the content". The documentation for the efn template cites the article Chinese Room, which does similar use of the efn template. It seems to be fine when I have only one efn in the list but goes wrong when I add a another. With many thanks! Johannes Schade (talk) 09:56, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Johannes Schade: I've had a look at the latest and two previous versions of Mesmes, but can't see any cite error reported. Are you seening this in the published form, or only when editing a section? Martin of Sheffield (talk) 11:40, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I gave you the wrong article. It is Claude de Mesmes, comte d'Avaux, please look under Notes and references. With many thanks Johannes Schade (talk) 15:18, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I've had a play with it but I think you need to review the whole basis of the footnotes/citations and quotation. I simplified the sfns within the last efn, but the error persists, and I notice that the references don't seem to line up correctly. Furthermore if you go to the help page (click on the "help page" link) which is here, section 2 states "Including more than one nested reference in List-defined references will cause a Cite error". You're doing exactly that, up to three sfn refs within a single efn in a list-defined reference system. I think that if you move the efns out into the main text and get rid of the list-definitions, then the problem will go away, but I didn't want to start hacking your work too mercilessly. Upshot: get a citation expert like Trappist the monk to cast an eye, or else rearrange things. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 16:36, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Martin of Sheffield, do not waste more time on it! Let me have another look. I also played some more around with it in the meantime, and I think I have an idea about what it might be. With many thanks Johannes Schade (talk) 17:02, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Martin of Sheffield: thank you very much! I suppose it is you you brought the matter to the attention of Trappist the monk and reverted all these changes on Claude de Mesmes, comte d'Avaux. Until next time.

(edit conflict)

To me that footnote is a mess:
 • non-English text should be wrapped in lang for proper markup and for screen readers
 • the italic markup was left open
 • it is not clear to me why the separate quotes use a mix of italicized and non-italicized text
 • Pattou and Laine are two different sources so shouldn't there be some sort of 'and' or punctuation between them?
 • is the quote beginning Armes: écartelé au 1 d'or, ... attributed to both identically?
 • does all of this text need to be all-in-one-footnote?
One workaround for the tag limitation is to replace sfn with harv. I still links to the source in the bibliography but does so without a . I have demonstrated that here:
The coat of arms has been described by Pattou,(Pattou 2019) Lainé,(Lainé 1819, p. 234) "Armes: écartelé au 1 d'or, au croissant de sable, qui est de Mesmes; aux 2 et 3 d'argent, à deux lions léopardés de gueules, lampassés et armés d'azur, qui est de BIGORRE; au 4 d'or, au croissant de sable, à la champagne ond es d'azur; au chef de gueules, qui est de LASSUS." and La Chesnaye des Bois.(La Chesnaye des Bois 1775, p. 88) "Les armes: d'or, au croissant de sable, écartelé aux 2 et 3 d'or, à deux lions ou léopards rampans, qui est DE BIGORRE; au 4 d'or à l'étoile de sable; à la pointe ondée d'azur; qui est DE LASSUIS, des plus illustres en Guienne, fondue en 1480, en celle des MESMES." The descriptions by Lainé and La Chesnaye des Bois are both marred by a few obvious errors, which are corrected in the description given by Pattou. The first quarter is sometimes said to be for Avaux rather than for Mesmes.(La Chesnaye des Bois 1770, table at the end of the volume) "AVAUX: d'or au croissant de sable."

 • La Chesnaye des Bois, François Alexandre Aubert de (1775). Dictionnaire de la noblesse (in French). Vol. 10. Paris: Duchesne. cite book: Invalid |ref=harv (help)

 • Pattou, Etienne (13 March 2019). "Famille de Mesmes" (PDF) (in French). Retrieved 22 March 2019. cite web: Invalid |ref=harv (help)
I tested this in the article (note that I tweaked the Pattou template to give it a date which I took from the source).
First, it seems to me is organize and clarify, There is no limitation on space here so if you need multiple notes to accomplish the job, that's ok. And, one other quibble: mind the WP:LISTGAP in §Notes and references and MOS:PSEUDOHEAD in §Rank.
Trappist the monk (talk) 17:28, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Trappist the monk, thank you for your intervention. I think you saw a version that was messed up by repetitive trial and error debugging attempts. I just have made a new state of Claude de Mesmes, comte d'Avaux that is marked "No blank lines between list items". I removed the empty lines between the items of the list of references as I understand you wanted it. I did not know and am very glad to learn from you. The italics in the quotes should now be right and be precisely as in the cited source, but you seem to believe the entire quotes should be in italics because it is foreign regardless of the use of Roman and italic characters in the source. The cite error still happens and footnote 30 is not generated. I have a;lso worked on another article Jean-Antoine de Mesmes (1640-1709) where the same error happens. I think one should well be allowed to make listed and named explanatory footnotes and include shortened footnotes in them. The article Chinese room is cited for it in the documentation for the explanatory footnote. I think more and more that this is a bug. Social Media Icons

Is it possible to edit an article to add social media icons, or are normal external links preferable instead? THANKS! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Idlerichracing (talkcontribs) 14:44, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

What do you mean by social media icons? Ruslik_Zero 17:12, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Idlerichracing: I think you're referring to putting external links to social media sites like Facebook and LinkedIn and using the icons. As far as I know, Wikipedia syntax isn't designed to do this - you can only use text, and the only non text symbol that I've seen is the little arrow indicating an inline external link, like at the end of [abc.com]. Social icons are not supported. Please sign your comments with four tildes ~~~~ so we know who you are. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 18:21, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Tefo.Steven Welcome to the Teahouse, and thank you for introducing yourself. We have volunteers here day and night to assist new editors if they encounter problems. We gladly offer advice and help, so do come back if you need assistance. Should an editor not act in accordance with our policies and guidelines (of which we do have rather a lot, I'm afraid!), we do our best to politely steer them onto the right path. With that in might I advise that your User Talk page is not meant for you to post CV-like details about yourself, nor for philosophical musings. It's intended as a way for editors to communicate with you about editing articles, and vice versa. Perhaps I could suggest that you remove those, and just say a few words about yourself which you can place on your main userpage, which you have not yet created. Keep that short, of course, and don't reveal personal details you wouldn't want in the public domain. I will drop by shortly and post a welcome message with a number of helpful links for you. I particularly recommend visiting Help:Getting started. Best wishes, Nick Moyes (talk) 17:25, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted information -- considered advertising

Where is the line in determining what is considered advertising? I read a great book about a movie, and made reference to it on the director's page. It's a serious nonfiction book about movie production, hundreds of pages, and he is a dominant character. Why would this be advertisement? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ubermoviefan (talkcontribs) 17:39, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@ﷴﷺﷴﷺﷴﷺ: I'll add that just saying "it's valuable" isn't a valid argument to retain an article. In fact, that is one example of many arguments to avoid in deletion discussions. Additional references needed

I do not know if this is the correct place to voice this complaint. If not then please direct me to the proper destination.

My complaint is that some editors, jump into old articles which has a shortage of citations (and they are legion, so many that if all such were deleted then WP would be a skeleton.

What these eager beavers do is drop in and leave a citation about more references or citations needed such as this Template:Refimprove section.

I ask why bother, such a template might be called for on an article being submitted for review. but we are talking about articles that could be 9 or 10 years older or date back to the inception of WP.

For an old article, one in which the oirginal author(s)might have long gone on to other things, what does the editor who drops such a template expect? Better yet, since no one owns an article instead of dropping a template, show some initiative and do some research and provide the citation needed. I am not discussing articles submitted for review, but articles that have a long history on main space.Oldperson (talk) 21:26, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If an article needs more sourcing the age of it does not make a difference. This template is not a badge of shame - in fact it encourages other editors to come and improve the referencing. Anyone - including you - can do some research and improve the article but, as we are all volunteers, no one is required to do so. MarnetteD|Talk 21:45, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Some editors have articles on their Watch list, but don't visit otherwise. Even an edit as simple as a 'Citation needed' will bring the article to their attention (IF they are regular checkers of their watch list). David notMD (talk) 22:21, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Oldperson: Not wanting to 'pile on', but I do feel that adding 'ref improve' or 'unreferenced sections' to old articles I encounter can be very helpful, as suggested above. I might not have the skills, knowledge and especially desire to spend time on improving the myriad of articles I encounter on my travels here. But if I see a weakness in one, it seems right to me to flag it up, rather than to simply walk away and do nothing except 'tut-tutting' that it's old and that nobody cares. I would certainly want to act to improve a page if I saw any sort of 'citation needed' note added to any of the articles I created or that I monitor. With c.5.8 million articles here, no editor can get involved in every one of them, and I personally think that anything that highlights weaknesses in articles is incredibly useful. What I then expect, or hope, is that someone with a subject interest in that area who sees such an obvious template will be sufficiently motivated to do something about it. So in a way, the bigger the notice, the better. What I dislike are the sub-set of editors here who, on seeing an old, badly referenced article, think the only thing to be done with it is to propose it for deletion. That solves nothing, and only serves to weaken or undermine the foundations of Wikipedia's broad encyclopaedic content. In a way, I feel you have answered your own question; the alternatives are 'do nothing', 'delete everything', spend ten lifetimes improving articles I'm not interested in, or flagging uncited content for more interested editors to address. Creating a New Article

How do I create a brand new article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bluenose Gunner (talkcontribs) 01:17, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Just search for the title of the article you want to create. If it's there, don't make another one. If it's not you can make it but see this first: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Your_first_article AltoStev (talk) 02:39, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Style for this article

Find particular articles based on protection level.

A couple of weeks ago I was on Wikipedia and found this tool where you can search for articles that were specifically semi protected or fully protected or pending changes protected but I forgot where it was. Can somebody help me?

Translated quotations from sources in other languages

In Ata'ollah Ashrafi Esfahani there are a number of quotations in English from articles that appear to be in Farsi (Persian). I say "appear to be" because while some of the URLs given go to source pages that are all in Persian, many of them bring up a page that, according to Google Translate, says in Persian "You need to enter the site to view the article content. If you are not a member, join the membership." Thus I cannot see the article to tell whether the quotations are given there in Persian or in English. I consider English unlikely, as the speakers credited are Persian Muslim clerics. The article contains, or contained before the March GOCE backlog drive, many grammatical infelicities that indicate a non-native speaker's writing.

The reason I ask is this: If the English version is a translation by a Wikipedia editor, I will feel free to correct any such errors where the meaning is not in doubt, but if the quotation is in English in the source, I think I should not do so. Advice, please? Please Ping me to discuss. --Thnidu (talk) 03:19, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Automatic IP blocks

I noticed that only on the English Wikipedia, certain IP address that are in the range of cellular networks and schools are automatically blocked from editing due to fear of vandalism. Why aren't they in all the other editions of Wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.90.47.253 (talk) 03:26, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Likely because the vandal did not target them WelpThatWorked (talk) 04:34, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes; each language version of Wikipedia is its own project, and blocks on one version do not apply to other versions. Global blocks that do apply to all versions are possible, but rare. 331dot (talk) 07:48, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Replacing image in article

Hi, I just registered an account because I think its the only way I can add images. However, I’m still not very familiar with how this is done so I was hoping someone here could help.

The picture I am trying to add is a high quality, high resolution photograph of my anus to the article human anus. The image is superior to and more detailed than the existing photo of a female anus featured at the top (I am female by the way), so this is the specific image I would like to replace Female and male anus. Unfortunately I don’t know how to upload my image. I tried using brackets around the file name on my computer just like it’s formatted in the article to my user page but it’s not working. Can anyone help? Thanks! - Luisa — Preceding unsigned comment added by Luisalott (talkcontribs) 03:59, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Luisalott, You can upload images to wikipedia using the Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard. Then put the name of the image (File:xyz.jpg) on the page you want in brackets (so ). As you want to replace the image, simply find the previous image (eg. ) and replace it with yours. Good luck, especially with the er... Interesting photo. @Clayoquot: Hello and welcome. Articles are not indexed by Google until they are marked as reviewed by a New Page Patroller(or anyone, really). 331dot (talk) 07:14, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@David notMD, @Jeyabalajitm if you have enough sources, and you think its enough then copy the following code when viewing this page and paste it anywhere (but most people place it at the bottom) in your draft: . dealing with a series of IP edits (one user?)

I am not sure how to proceed, and would like to ask for a recommended course of action. The concern is the recent IP edits of the Dido Elizabeth Belle page. As you can see from history, three IP editors have the same agenda (outing and deleting a particular source). I hesitate to start a dialog with a IP editor (i.e. placing warning templates), since the likelihood of a vandal seems high (do note the hate speech in the first bout of edits) and I can't be sure it really is one and the same person. Really I would prefer to hand this off to an admin or similar, but can't seem to find a good fit for a noticeboard. Each IP user hasn't done "enough", and seems careful to only use valid expressions (and so I can't rule out good faith). I sure don't want to play a game of whack-a-mole here, and feel it is not my place to keep reverting this stuff. Thanks CapnZapp (talk) 11:17, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I know nothing about the topic. I reverted to a pre-debate version and suggested that consensus be first reached at Talk of the article. Suggest ignoring that the IP address changed from the first cluster to the later, inclusive reverts, and focus on content instead. David notMD (talk) 16:07, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Dis-satified with massive edit of sources on article Pratishtha Sharma

Hi this is Rusiane(rusi) one of my contributed article of Pratishtha Sharma was under massive edit and more than 100 sources were removed quoting unreliable. it was also mentined that i am doing unexplained changes. many sources were deleted and it was mentioned that youtube sources are un-reliable. which is acceptable but other sources are from national news paper with millions of circulation, government of India web links, other web sources etc. links are from hindi language new papers also but big news papers. hindi is well used language in India and article is on Indian personality. you tube link were also interview videos of national news channels uploaded by them on their you tube channels. undo the same is not possible and were threatened to remove article. finding difficulty in rechecking it as contribution is not of one day.being an old user i follow moderate policy, now surprised to see massive changes by a new users and questioning my credibility without thoroughly checking. kindly guide what to do.Rusianejohn (talk) 11:20, 30 March 2019 (UTC)Rusianejohn (talk) 11:21, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Rusianejohn, I'm not sure I'm understanding your use of the terms "old user" and "new user." Your account shows 189 edits, while Chiswick Chap shows 135,000+. --valereee (talk) 12:23, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Let's allow for "old user" that R meant in context of this article, as having been involved with it since 2013. But as we all know, involvement with an article does not equal ownership. CC has patiently been asking at R's Talk page to identify which among the plethora of references can be considered reliable sources. David notMD (talk) 16:13, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
you are not getting to the core of the issue. 118 links were deleted out of which you tube links were around 10 only and rest were all independent links of third parties and news papers and news channels, not only news but news videos from news channels belong to the other countries as well. at wiki we delete dead links, suggest changes on talk page. this was my first experience. Creating a page

How to create a page on Wikipedia — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aabbbii (talkcontribs) 13:51, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Aabbbii. You didn't start a new section for your question, so I have added a header. Writing an acceptable article on Wikipedia is much harder than most people realise, and I don't advise trying it until you've got a few hundred edits you've made to improve existing articles. But in any case, you should start by reading your first article. One further thing I'll mention is to consider why you want to write an article (which is a better way of thinking about it than "creating a page")? If you want to help us improve Wikipedia, and you've spotted a notable topic that hasn't yet been covered, great. But if you are really here to tell the world about yourself/your professor/your boss/your company/your band/your charity/your invention, then please read what Wikipedia is not, and realise that you are likely to have a frustrating time. --ColinFine (talk) 15:51, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

DarkGlow, It appears fine for me, are you sure you aren't looking at an older version? WelpThatWorked (talk) 16:08, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, I was just about to say exactly the same thing. I've looked at all of DarkGlow's revisions and there were no references included in the Concert Tours section, so I'm also struggling to understand what the original concerns were. Nick Moyes (talk) 16:12, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Nick Moyes: @WelpThatWorked: This is very confusing. When I’m on my phone, both logged in and out, the references and external links are both within the concert section. I tried editing the code, but it did nothing. My wikipedia is on beta, which means it’s on the newest version, right? Confusing. – DarkGlow (talk) 16:16, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

DarkGlow, Beta indicates an in-development version, witch can cause bugs, but not like that. Could you send a screenshot? Clearing the app's cache may fix the issue. WelpThatWorked (talk) 16:46, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

How long and who?

Hello, I was wondering for how long an article would remain in Draft mode in general? I see also than groups of people sharing an interest have some kind of alarms when a new page is created or one is edited in the "domain"? Are those the persons who do the review? Nothing urgent in this article, just wondering about how it works. Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Infraneka (talkcontribs) 16:30, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Infraneka: In general, they stay there as long it takes to finish them. Unsubmited Drafts that haven't been edited for 6 months may be deleted, howwer, they will be restored on request at WP:REFUND. Submited drafts stay there until a reviewer is willing to review it. There are about 2200 pending submission awaiting review, and they are not reviewed in a specific order, so patience is requiered. When a submitted article gets reviewed, there are three possible ways: Its accepted and is moved to main namspace, it gets declined and counts as unsubmitted (so the 6 months timer starts again) or its getting rejected. Rejected submissions are more often than not Candidates for speedy deletion. Victor Schmidt (talk) 17:00, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Reference a webpage in a different language?

Am I allowed to do that? I found a biography webpage of very good quality that confirms a whole lot of things I am writing into my English language wikipedia article. But the webpage is in Nepali, and auto-translating it produces gibberish. So, can I still cite that source, or do I discard it and look for another? I feel like academically, I should be able to reference it. But, if an ordinary user would find the article and try to check the references, they wouldn't be able to verify anything. Right? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Usedtobecool (talkcontribs) 16:31, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Usedtobecool, It is always preferred to find an english source, or something that translates easily into english, but other languages are OK. If you know the correct translation, google translate allows you to suggest fixes to the translation. However, if you can't find another source that shares the same info, it may not be reliable. WelpThatWorked (talk) 16:51, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
WelpThatWorked, Thank you. I am writing a biography about a Nepali language poet. He is a big deal and has a Nepali wikipedia page. Most of the sources that mention his biography and literature are in Nepali, by other reputable Nepali writers. But, English sources mostly mention his politics and views only. Since the country is seriously lagging in literacy and development, it will be decades before these works will all be translated to other languages, even English. I am wondering if the English language wikipedia would rather not have the articles about these figures at all, until they become more accessible globally (for reference on other such articles I might want to create in the future). What do you think? Usedtobecool (talk) 17:04, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Usedtobecool, It's been a known fact that en wikipedia has a systemic bias towards western and english language subjects when it comes to number of articles, so more articles on other subjects is always welcome. WelpThatWorked (talk) 17:51, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
WelpThatWorked, Thanks again. Thread Closed. Usedtobecool (talk) 18:22, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

How can you determine the correct length of an article's lead section?

(question follows from discussion here) Temporary political account (talk) 16:56, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Temporary political account: Welcome to the Teahouse. There is no exact answer, except to say that the lead should match the length and content of the article, and effectively summarise the key points, nor should there be anything in the lead which isn't in the article. I would point you to the introduction at Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Lead section, and the subsection Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Lead_section#Length. Thus, a lengthy article like Neoliberalism (c.144,000 bytes) would be expected to have three or four good paragraphs, which indeed it does. I've not read the content, so can't comment on how accurately it reflect the article, but it 'looks' about right to me. Although the lead doesn't need to have inline citations, I suspect on somewhat contentious articles, as here, this can help. Hope this reply is of use. @Deanna Coakley: I have now redirected Draft:SINFONÍA LATINA to the non-capitalised version. There was absolutely no need to create a second draft. Should you think you've lost any of the most recent edits because of this WP:REDIRECT, fear not, you can access all the content of any earlier version with this link. Be aware that Drafts can be edited by anyone, so for you to create two drafts about the same topic could cause problems and waste editor effort. This really should be in a FAQ somewhere, the number of times that it's come up at WP:VPT etc. Anyway, if you look at the template page, Template:Infobox album, you will find a large portion of it has a pale green background, which is headed "Template documentation". Just below that heading there are some rectangular boxes. One of these begins "This infobox should italicize the article title automatically." containing further instructions. Boxes like that are found near the top of the documentation for several other infoboxes that are concerned with published works, such as infobox newspaper, infobox book, etc. The actual parameter to use does vary, so the documentation for the specific infovox should always be consulted. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 14:05, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Vin404: Welcome to Wikipedia. Read and follow WP:YFA for how to create an article, and you can use the wizard there to create a draft for review. The player will need to meet the requirements of notability at WP:RLN. Help making a page searchable outside wikipedia please

Hi all, I recently published a page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenny_(Leonard)_Pozner which I have just discovered does not appear in google searches. I am wondering why, and also how can I fix this? Could it be because after initially publishing the page as "Leonard Pozner" I moved it to "Lenny (Leonard) Pozner"? The reason for this was that I had had a re-think and decided that the subject of the page was more commonly known by the name "Lenny". Thanks330highflyer (talk) 03:37, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@330highflyer: This is because the page has not yet been reviewed by a New page reviewer. It was not caused by your actions. So please wait a little bit until it's reviewed, you can continue improving it in the meantime. – Ammarpad (talk) 06:15, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

How do you edit an article to include a hatnote? No Frills (grocery store) should probably be included in a hatnote under the article No Frills Excursions, especially since "NoFrills" is a common way to refer to the grocery store (at least in my local area, it was what I was expecting to find when I searched it) and redirects to that article. I searched for an article, but didn't find one. Mea culpa. How does an article get deleted? Should be done soon. Thanks. Bitwixen (talk) 04:14, 31 March 2019 (UTC) I have read that only administrators can perform deletions. Thanks. Bitwixen (talk) 04:20, 31 March 2019 (UTC) To be clear: The article Jennifer Yu (chess player) was published first and should remain. Bitwixen (talk) 04:21, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Your spelling error is a plausible misspelling (obviously, as you made it, it follows others might too), so rather than delete it, I just redirected it to the original article. Bitwixen, you could have done that too as it takes no special permissions. Take a look to see the markup and how I tagged it. Thanks for stopping by Teahouse! Just a piece of advice here. Even without it being a duplicate, that was nothing even resembling a proper encyclopedia article. Please read WP:MFA and submit your drafts for review via WP:AFC. Thanks. John from Idegon (talk) 04:53, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

In terms of functionality, no difference. They all serve the same function; to generate a notification to another user. Their outputs may differ however. – Ammarpad (talk) 06:18, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Acyclonxe: The notification is caused by a wikilink to the user page of the user. It doesn't matter how the link is made. Here I wrote it directly as Acyclonxe without a template. The edit has to be signed and there are some other conditions which are usually met. There are details at mw:Manual:Echo#Technical details but if you just remember to sign in the same edit then it's usually OK. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:32, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

What I think was a small but useful edit was deleted as not being constructive by someone, why?

In this article : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARP_spoofing about ARP spoofing, a very common network vulnerability and the defence section is rather incomplete, I tested and added some minor information to a few defence tools but it was reverted by someone for not being constructive, this seems pretty restrictive, this is my first edit however, it was not perfect but it was important information to start with for an article that was not being updated, why? thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Apool125 (talkcontribs) 14:13, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Apool125: Both article talk pages and user talk pages are meant for communication related to Wikipedia, in the case of article talk pages communication about that article specifically. In terms of a private message, you can see if that user has email enabled so you can email them, by visiting their userpage and clicking "email this user" on the left of the screen, but they are under no obligation to reply to you(if they have email enabled at all). Many users prefer to keep most Wikipedia related communication on Wikipedia. It's not really clear to me why your edit was reverted, but the best way to find out is a polite question to that user. 331dot (talk) 14:27, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@331dot: Hey, added a section on their talk page, will add one on the article's talk page if they do not respond, thanks lots for the help, how do you @some one without the tedious command? Apool125 (talk) 14:42, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
You can also use 331dot(as an example), but that's about as simple as it gets. 331dot (talk) 14:44, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

331dot ah thanks much friend, cheers Apool125 (talk) 15:23, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Can you cite Wikipedia in Wikipedia?

I know it’s generally discouraged to cite Wikipedia. My teachers said it, Wikipedia says it, I say it. But is it okay to cite Wikipedia in Wikipedia? For example, I recently added the event of two Texas officers being gunned down by Barrow Gang members in Grapevine Texas to a date article. I cited a specific section from Wikipedia’s Frank Hamer article. Is that ok? — Preceding unsigned comment added by SmileyTrek (talkcontribs) 15:42, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Learning about Formatting

Can someone tell me about some kinds of Text formatting? I have saw a lot of users using different kind of colors too but those codes were really hard to decipher and memorise. Shades and all that stuff too are pretty confusing. Your help will be remembered, appreciated and Re-paid. From a Universal Servant Levent Heitmeier (talk) 15:50, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I think your User page (Sunday Morning complete lyrics and a audio of the song) are a copyright violation. David notMD (talk) 16:19, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know about that stuff. I fetched it from Wikipedia so i thought that nothing was wrong with it. The audio and lyrics both are provided on the page. I think you should re-check if you are right or wrong David notMD. Levent Heitmeier (talk) 16:23, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Levent Heitmeier: I am afraid you were mistaken to believe you could place that content on your userpage, and David notMD was quite correct to point this out to you. So, I would politely ask you to very speedily delete both the lyrics and audio sample immediately. It's not an unreasonable error for a new editor to make, but those of us with more experience here do "know about that stuff". Here are the reasons:
 1. The audio file is uploaded under a 'fair use' policy. Meaning that it is recognised as copyright, but that a short sample is deemed appropriate under law to demonstrate the genre, but ONLY in the relevant article, not anywhere else. Certainly not on your or anyone else's userpage.
 2. You userpage is there for you to say a little about yourself and your interest in editing Wikipedia. See WP:NOTWEBHOST to appreciate it's not intended as the equivalent of a "student pinboard" for editors to display stuff that just happens to take their fancy. I respect your great taste in music, but please leave sharing copyrighted lyrics and sound files for personal blogs and websites, please.
 3. I can't see whereabouts on Wikipedia you copied the lyrics from - perhaps you could point this out to us, so we can check? See Wikipedia:Lyrics and poetry, which makes it clear that lyrics are generally copyright of the authors, so unless they were released under an appropriate licence, having them on your userpage falls foul of our strict rules on WP:COPYVIO|copyright violation]], not to mention WP:NOTWEBHOST.
I'm really sorry to sound so discouraging over your attempts to make a nice userpage, but I'm afraid it's simply not OK to do it in the way you have so innocently done here. To make up for the disappointment, do take a look at Wikipedia:User page design center for some great ideas to make good-looking userpages that do conform to our policies. And to answer your original question: Take a look at Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Text formatting. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 16:56, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Levent Heitmeier: I figured out the basics fairly quickly, I'd say. It took me a very short time to figure out that double square brackets make links, double curly brackets make templates, double euals signs make headers, etc. Sometimes though, I kind of need to make a few guesses, but hey, that's what the show preview button is for! I do make a few mistakes here and there, due to my newness here as well as the fact that English is my second language (if you haven't told from my signature, Chinese is my first); whenever I realize I made a mistake, I tried to fix it as soon as possible. So yeah, there isn't really much of a secret per se, it's just that I'm a fast learner in many respects, and Wikipedia is no exception. Woshiyiweizhongguoren (🇨🇳) 18:00, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
At the end, it always matters upon how much hard work and dedication, you are showing towards a particular task. I have just completed my annual exams so i am a bit free than before so i am doing these things for my own amusement but as soon as my studies get back on track, I'll take a break of nearly 6-7 months. That's the way it is. I am a kind of person who tries to devote his time majorly to the help of others and that's probably why I chose environmental science as my studies though the scope here in my country is too low and so you have to forget about high net income. But Hurricanes like me are hard to stop from international recognition. From a universal servant Levent Heitmeier (talk) 18:13, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Two Articles Deleted - Even after extensive referencing

Hi everyone, I am sure this gets asks many many times.

I wrote two articles and both are being deleted. IN both cases, I added extensive references from Reputable News Sources, Newspapers, online newsites, etc. My concern, is that the reviewers who deleted are not from my area and do not recognize these sources. In both cases, it was commented that the sources were minor and 'online.'

I am sure we all agree, that the majority of newspapers are online now, so I do not know the problem. In once case, I created a page for a podcast The Night Time POdcast that has acheived over 5 Million downloads, hit number 27 on the North America iTunes charts, is played on Corus Radio (international multiple stations) has been covered by newspapers in the USA, Canada and the UK. I have no idea why this was rejected for not being 'notable'

The second, is the band Paragon Cause, who similarly have considerable news coverage both nationally and internationally.

Its very frustrating at this point as the editors do not seem to apply standards set out by wikipedia and/or interpret these standards in their own way. Jbonapar (talk) 17:34, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to the Teahouse, Jbonapar. You seem to have a far more lenient definition of a reliable source than most other editors do. At Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Paragon Cause, for example, you argued that: "Music blogs, unpaid ones Like Comeherefloyd, Spill Magazine, New Noise Magazine should be considered quality sites as they are not for pay and in todays digital music world, they are one of the primary methods in which artist become notable." This is completely contrary to the widespread consensus that amateur blogs and other self-published sources are worthless for establishing notability. Reliable sources have professional editorial control. Bearcat, a highly experienced editor, explained things quite clearly and thoroughly to you in that debate. If you want to write new articles, then it will be important for you to improve your understanding of what constitutes a genuine reliable source and write articles that summarize only what such reliable sources say about the topic. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 18:19, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I found that the first link in the Further Reading of Climate change is not working. The "Summary for Policymakers" needs to be updated. I found a new link https://www.ipcc.ch/sr15/ but am not sure how to change it. I should be ok with editing a semi-protected article. But the visual editor link doesn't let me do anything. I didn't want to mess with the edit source hyperlink without making sure about how this citation works. Thanks for your help.

Creating images

Hello,

I am currently working on my first article and could use some feedback regarding images. I have gone through the training module and attempted to search images in wikipedia related to my subject but it is quite specific. I am trying to upload images on specific joint designs in welds. If I am referencing a book, would it be allowed for me to recreate those images myself and use them in my article?

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aguilar.97 (talkcontribs) 21:55, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Aguilar.97: Welcome to the Teahouse. Whilst you may create a graphic of your own, it is important to appreciate that you can't just copy an existing graphic. Your version has to be sufficiently different that there's not going to be any accusation of copyright theft. Just as we ask editors to write content in their own words, and not just paraphrase, the same applies to graphics as well. Providing you can make your graphic sufficiently different from one that's in a book, you should be ok with uploading it to Commons. You might still wish to acknowledge the sources of inspiration that led to your graphic. Does this make sense? Good luck with your course. Nick Moyes (talk) 00:19, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Publishing the page

Hello! I have just made a page and it got saved as draft, does this mean Wikipedia is reviewing the page and starting the process to publish it on google? Hi. I've put a draft template at the top of Draft:RAMSTEAID. Push the blue "submit your draft for review" button to submit it for review.
The draft probably won't be accepted in its current state, though. It has a rather promotional tone, and has no references, which are required. Take a look at Wikipedia:Your First Article.
Also, to clarify: articles aren't "published on google", they are published on Wikipedia and indexed by Google. (Draft articles are not indexed.) Eman235/talk 22:20, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Survey by neutral national organization

Is a survey by a national information clearinghouse (The Scientist Magazine) sufficiently third party? The target organization was not a participant in the survey. 2,081 usable and qualifying responses were received from 61 separate sources and tabulated by magazine staff, and the magazine published the results. Can this be used as independent third-party data?DeknMike (talk) 02:41, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to the Teahouse, DeknMike. The source appears to be reliable in general but it would be necessary to see the exact survey and know which specific assertion it is intended to support. The best place for such discussions is Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard. It looks like you are working on Draft:Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation. This is not appropriate because we already have an article Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation. The draft namespace is for drafts of new articles, not for drafting improvements to existing articles. You should use your own userspace instead, such as a personal sandbox. I see lots of promotional language in your draft, such as "OMRF has a reputation as a great place to work" and "It is one of the nation's top independent medical research centers in the fields of immune disfunction, cancers and cardiology." Unreferenced assertions like that violate the neutral point of view. I recommend that you abandon this draft, and instead make specific requests for changes at Talk: Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, using Template:Request edit since you have a conflict of interest. Declined article

Hi,

I submitted this page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Pradeo), and it got rejected for not passing the NCORP criteria. I'm wondering how I could improve that, because the sources used (I think) are independent and reliable. In addition, the person reviewing said it was "somewhat promotional". But in comparison to another company in the same industry (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zimperium) I can't really tell where I'm promotional.

Thanks for the help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Blixoo (talkcontribs) 08:56, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The terms "known for" and "solutions" strike me as somewhat promotional: it might be better to substitute more neutral terms like "makes" and "products" (or similar).
However, the main objection by the reviewer is not that the sources used are not independent and reliable, it's that their content doesn't support the subject's notability, which requires several (say, 3 or more) sources which devote at least several paragraphs to the subject – passing mentions, inclusions in lists and directories, etc., aren't sufficient. Comparison with other similar articles doesn't help because of Wikipedia:Other stuff – it may be that those articles are also inadequate. (The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.200.138.194 (talk) 15:21, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The really serious problem is that Pradeo simply does not meet our notability criteria. See WP:NCORP. No amount of attempts at making it less promotional are going to fix that. I would like to point something out to you though: Something you might not see as promotional, but I do, is for example: In 2013, the analysis engine "Pradeo Security" was released. All Pradeo's solutions are based on this technology. Since you haven't explained what an analysis engine is, and we don't have an article about analysis engines, it is just meaningless marketing speak. After reading this, nobody could possibly have gained a better understanding of what technology is used in the company's products, why it is different from its competitors or why anyone should care. We're building an encyclopedia, not a marketing tool. Vexations (talk) 21:04, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please help me improve my draft submission on Jem Bendell

Hi there, I'm trying to initiate an article on Jem Bendell. I've only made minor edits in the past, not submitted whole new articles.

I am in no way related to Bendell. I became interested in his contributions as his name has started appearing in the media since the beginning of 2019. I've seen his name mentionned next to Rupert Read's. These two academics have a similar profile as far as I can tell, so I thought Bendell should equally have a page on Wikipedia.

I've looked at qualifying criteria from Wikipedia:Notability_(academics), and I think Bendell meets 3 of them:

 • 1. The person's research has had a significant impact in their scholarly discipline, broadly construed, as demonstrated by independent reliable sources.

Criteria met: by coining the concept of Deep Adaptation, he has influenced a rethink of the discipline of sustainability management in academia (e.g. https://www.uea.ac.uk/philosophy/news-and-events/-/asset_publisher/wb9yCV6yd5EC/blog/after-the-ipcc-report-climatereality-by-rupert-read?inheritRedirect=false)

 • 2. The person has received a highly prestigious academic award or honor at a national or international level.

Criteria met: in 2012, the World Economic Forum appointed him a Young Global Leader for his work on sustainability. (https://www.cumbria.ac.uk/study/academic-staff/all-staff-members/iflas/professor-jem-bendell.php)

 • 7. The person has had a substantial impact outside academia in their academic capacity.

Criteria met: his seminal paper Deep Adaptation was widely commented by the media (http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2018/08/theres-worse-climate-news-than-the-mendocino-complex-fire.html, https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-09-26/new-climate-debate-how-to-adapt-to-the-end-of-the-world, https://www.vice.com/en_uk/article/vbwpdb/the-climate-change-paper-so-depressing-its-sending-people-to-therapy), also numerous talks to global organisations e.g. United Nations Research Institute for Social Development, some of them on YouTube

Could you help me improve my draft submission Draft:Jem_Bendell please?

IP editor: If you'd kept on reposting the same deleted messages on my talk page time and time again- especially after you'd just come out of a block for disruptive editing - I'd be pretty irritated and would regard those re-posts as spamming and edit warring. And I didn't even get as far back as to the original reason for your multiple repetitive identical posts on CaradhrasAiguo's talk page. Just stop please - it's bloomin' disruptive. Nick Moyes (talk) 13:28, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
This IP user came to me on my user talk page and asked why his/her message was interpreted and regarded as "spam" (see permalink to discussion and my responses). I obviously don't have any context as to the article or the disruption, so I responded with some limited and careful input and advice. The user's request for help regarding why his/her message was spam (as well as the message itself) seemed good faith to me, but there's obviously more to this story than I've bothered to look into given the responses I'm seeing above. Just adding this note to the discussion for the record. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:57, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah -good work, Woshiyiweizhongguoren. A very minor point would be to observe that you say "this user" and then say "we don't". Do you mean collectively all Chinese people, or just yourself, or are there more than one person operating your account (which I'm sure there isn't)? How about: "This user is Chinese and gets offended when asked if they eat dog meat. (They don't.)" Just a thought - not a criticism. Nick Moyes (talk) 12:36, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Struggling to verify content

Good Day I'm trying to create a company page however I keep running into issues around verifiable content. The company's name is Prudential Investment Managers in South Africa, which forms part of the broader Prudential plc group. the company has many references in the media in South Africa however none of which Wikipedia seems to accept as being verifiable. Please could you advise on a course of action to have our Wikipedia page entry approved? Thanks very much. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Brandon at Prudential (talkcontribs) 12:38, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Before you go any further, please read WP:COI and WP:PAID, both of which I suspect apply to you. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 12:42, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Brandon at Prudential: The problem is less about verifiability - I think you can ignore that - it's actually Notability that's the real issue here. None of your references are anything other than insider sources showing that the company exists. That's not in dispute, but whether or not the world has taken sufficient notice to have three or four independent, non-involved sources write about Draft:Prudential Investment Managers in depth is definitely under question. 'Notability' is the criterion we use to determine whether a page on a topic here is justified. My observation would be that perhaps a single line about Draft:Prudential Investment Managers within the Prudential plc page might be acceptable if you can demonstrate the strong link. (I should also declare a COI here - in that my grandfather worked for the Prudential in London just after the first World War!) Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 13:07, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

List of rooms in the White House

I am soon going to create the list List of rooms in the White House but I am afraid it might get deleted. There already is a category: (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Rooms_in_the_White_House) but I am not sure if that counts as a list. Even if I do create the list I will not be sure on how to start. I have only made content pages, not lists. Should I create the list or not? And please help me get started if its fine. Eton Shirts on Wikipedia

Hi,

We (Global Swedish shirt brand Eton Shirts) would like to add an english version about the history of Eton Shirts from the founding in 1928 to today. We are already present on the Swedish Wikipedia but since our biggest market is outside Scandinavia (mainly North America but also Continental Europe) it would be nice with an english version as well. We do not want to publish anything without running it with the Wikipedia community first and therefore kindly ask if someone could advise us how to move forward? If this is not the right place to ask this question, please advise us on that as well. We already have a text proposal completed with sources but like stated above, we would like to run everything we have with the Wikipedia community first. Swe jon (talk) 13:35, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please read WP:COI, WP:PAID and WP:OWN. If other editors consider your company WP:NOTABLE then a page may be created. You should not edit this page directly, instead make requests on its talk page. Please also ensure that acccounts are for personal use only, not shared amongst employees. Regards, Martin of Sheffield (talk) 13:44, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Martin, thanks for your quick reply. I have read the links and can only agree, I am for sure in a "conflict of interest-situation", that is why I'm posting my question here. As of today, there is several articles about Eton but no one about the company Eton Shirts. Since the page does not exist today there is not really a talk page where to make edits. If I would like to propose a text about Eton Shirts (mainly translated from the Swedish Wikipedia-site) without publicing it, where would I best do that? As stated above, I do not want to publish anything, but more to propose to someone else to do it if the community finds the text, sources and images interesting for Wikipedia as a whole. And yes, this account is only used by me. Swe jon (talk) 13:55, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Swe jon. Since there's no article about the company yet, I don't think there would be a problem if you created a first draft of the article yourself, using the Articles for Creation process. I do recommend that you first make sure your COI and PAID status is disclosed. For that, you can use your user page at User:Swe jon and/or the talk page of the Draft you're creating. Also, if you're translating from the Swedish Wikipedia (or any other language's Wikipedia), you must attribute the material appropriately, see WP:TFOLWP. rchard2scout (talk) 15:03, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Richard. That's certainly the best way forward for Swe jon. The article remains in draft namespace until someone else has had a chance to consider WP:UNDUE and WP:PROMO. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 15:23, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I've added a collection of useful links to the user's talk page. shoy (reactions) 16:42, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Billybenz4: the text you propose does not belong in an encyclopedia article. Various people have given you advice on your talk page and at the Help desk - please take a moment to look into that. Wikipedia is not a place to promote companies or products, and Wikipedia articles should not be based on what a company has to say about itself. It might sound harsh, but it's simply not what Wikipedia is for. --bonadea contributions talk 18:01, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Quotebox Addition

Nick Moyes If I want to add a quotebox to an article and the length of the quote is just too long (nearly a paragraph), then what can I do? Also, tell me if it is even legal or not to add as much long quotes and if I can find some kind of substitute for this. From a universal servant Levent Heitmeier (talk) 14:26, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Levent Heitmeier. I'm afraid your attempt to ping me didn't work as you forgot to include my username in your original post which you signed. You then came back (at least I assume it was you?) as an IP and added it later. Users only receive notification if both their user name and the person's signature are included in the same original post. Adding it afterwards without re-signing it simply wont work. See WP:PING.
To answer your question, see Wikipedia:Quotations for general guidance and WP:LONGQUOTES for matters concerning longer ones. Obviously it depends upon the relevance or importance of the quotation, but articles shouldn't be stuffed full of quotes, or consist of one big one. (I'm sure there are some notable exceptions someone can point out.) Obviously, supplying a link to the fuller quote is one option, as is adding it as a footnote, but must always be careful not to breach copyright simply by placing someone's words as a quotation. Instagram / Twitter

Maybe a stupid question but can Instagram / Twitter links be used as citations if they are from valid journalists / third party sources? I found a citation for something that does not have a web article but is a social media posting from Billboard Magazine about Billie Eilish's album performance. Grimothy29 (talk) 15:49, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Grimothy29, and welcome to the Teahouse! And not a stupid question at all. Per WP:TWITTER, no. On occasion, we use a persons socialmedia etc to cite their birthplace/birthdate or something else uncontroversial, but you can't use them to say stuff about other people. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 19:00, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Then again there's WP:SELFPUBLISH which says "maybe": "Self-published expert sources may be considered reliable when produced by an established expert on the subject matter, whose work in the relevant field has previously been published by reliable third-party publications." But then the question becomes, "If it's only on some social media, is it WP:DUE to have it in an article?" Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 19:10, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång: Thank you for the information! I guess my question is if it is something like this - a reliable source with information that may not have a full article on it (for example). I am trying to find the Billie Eilish Instagram post for reference. I also had a second question if you don't mind me asking. I am currently on break so have some time to improve my Wikipedia editing and contribution. Grimothy29 (talk) 20:54, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
In that particular case I would search for something like this [8] instead. Try googling just "news" (or "books" depending on topic), it will often get rid of a lot of blogs and stuff we don't use anyway. Ask away, that's what this place is for. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 21:06, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång: Duly noted! Yes - my second question is I am currently taking a stab at my first article and I'd like to have someone more experienced than me help me out with it before I submit. Unless I should just go through the draft submission process? Thank you. Grimothy29 (talk) 23:44, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I'm looking to create articles of notable people of Quebec's founding and first settlers. The problem is there are many bios relating to these people but only a few on Wikipedia. Many of these people coexisted together or around the same time and are connected through history with prominent people of the distant past and present.

The issue I am having is creating a profile that isn't similar to others when they are the same person.

All the profiles you find have the same original sources, so how do I create something that isn't going to have the same information? And as you would expect they all are very much alike. Jlastowski (talk) 16:08, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Jlastowski: I'm a little confused by your question. Are you saying you can't write a unique article about one of Quebec's founders since their background is the same as the other founders? If anyone did something notable and there's sufficient coverage, regardless of how similar their backgrounds are, they might warrant an article. I'd take a look at what's already there in the Quebec history section. If there's not enough for an entire article, a particular person who did something notable for Quebec could be mentioned there. Another option is to bring this up on the Canadian Wikipedians' notice board with others more familiar with Quebec. Good luck. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 19:32, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I was struggling with the processes of creating a biography of a person without it sounding like what others have copyrighted due to the sources for the information are the same. I like you suggestions for Quebec history section and Canadian Wikipedians' notice boardJlastowski (talk) 20:40, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict) @Jlastowski: Could you be a little clearer in your question, please? I don't understand what you mean by "profile". We have articles on many topics and people, both living and dead. We might call these biographies, certainly not "profiles". Users like you and me don't have "profiles" either - we have user pages containing a small amount of information about ourselves and our editing interests. I see you had a draft page speedily deleted as being a copyright infringement from the Dictionary of Canadian Biography (DCB). Whilst their listing in the DCB no doubt makes them notable as we define it, and thus worthy of an article here, there is no justification for repeating content. You should firstly consider summarising just a few of the salient points about that person in your own words and then also looking online or in reference libraries for other sources to bring together. In my experience, it's quite possible to find other books and journals that expand upon the expert entries in these national biographies - you just have to put the effort in, and that's half the fun of creating articles here. It's OK to link to a page in the DCB, but not to copy/paste chunks of it straight into Wikipedia. Does that answer your question? Nick Moyes (talk) 19:37, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
You are correct, I was using Profile in place of biographies. I will use highlights of the Bio and link to the page as well as others.Jlastowski (talk) 20:40, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Jlastowski: That sounds perfect. If you do it via Articles for Creation you'll get helpful feedback, but I suspect they should go through speedily. Nick Moyes (talk) 21:57, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@ADillon1: The question is, can you forget everything you know about yourself and only write based on the content of independent reliable sources? Technically, it is possible for someone to do this, but it is rare. Also, do you meet the notability guidelines for musicians/bands written at WP:BAND? If you truly meet the relevant guidelines, someone will eventually write an article about you. Keep in mind that a Wikipedia article is not necessarily desirable. Anything that appears in an independent reliable source about you is fair game for inclusion in an article about you, be it good or bad. 331dot (talk) 18:19, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Reverting vandalism

An editor should never get annoyed when somebody else reverts vandalism before they do!

I go on recent changes patrol and my Watchlist often to seek vandalism. I get mildly to moderately annoyed when someone gets to vandalism I planned to revert first. All I just want to do is make Wikipedia better. How can I revert vandalism faster? I don’t have tools to assist me. LPS and MLP Fan (LittlestPetShop) (MyLittlePony) 19:25, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@LPS and MLP Fan: Welcome to Wikipedia and thanks for wanting to make it better. Check out WP:CVUA to learn how to fight vandalism. Many vandalism edits are found by User:ClueBot_NG, which is faster than most of us will ever be. RudolfRed (talk) 19:37, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) @LPS and MLP Fan: I'm sure you mean "frustrated" rather than "annoyed"? How can you be annoyed when someone else has done a good job? The really speedy editors tend to use Huggle, as far as I can see. I use WP:TWINKLE to monitor, revert and warn users about bad faith editing, or to report them to WP:AIV. If I'm monitoring Recent Changes for bad faith edits, and find someone like Shellwood (who deserves an honourable Teahouse mention for his/her efforts) is getting in before me, I actually feel relaxed and pleased that someone else is actively checking the brand new edits at the top of the list. They're the ones dealing with the screaming hordes as they charge through the dark gates of Mordor onto the innocent green fields of Wikipedialand. So then I simply move down the list of recent changes, looking for the telltale signs of bad faith edits that missed the first swing of their ant-vandal axes, and check those out instead. It's those that are lower down that are liable to stay unchallenged unless you investigate them. Clues to look for are edits that contain any of the following
 • 'School' in the title (always worth doing a Ctrl-F on the word School and working through them all)
 • Use of phrases like "I fixed it" "Made it better" - it surprising how many people think we'll be fooled by that!
 • Use of "fixing typo" followed by tens or hundreds of bytes difference, plus or minus.
 • any use of the word "typo" in an edit summary
 • no edit summary
 • Unexplained removal of content, or big changes with an inadequate-sounding edit summary
 • Edits with (0) bytes change - always suspicious.
 • Any popular topic covered in school classes, especially chemistry and history.
 • Any article about a species (kids love to mess around with those for some reason)
 • Edits highlighted by ORES as especially likely to be bad-faith edits.
So don't get annoyed with the folks who take the easy option at the head of the list -go get stuck in and root out vandalism that slips past these guys. Let the vandals get annoyed with you instead - then you know you're really doing a good job! Regards from Hobbiton, Nick Moyes (talk) 20:03, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Can I get someone from Wikipedia to make my article acceptable... I do not have a clue what I am violating

C. J. Ford used to believe that if police apprehended someone it was because they had broken the law. That is, until one day, while driving through Torrance, an officer going in the opposite direction, did a u-turn and pulled him over. The office claimed that he pulled Ford over because of the tint on Ford’s windows. Ford told the officer that he bought the car like that, however he would make the appropriate corrections to a fix it ticket that he assumed the officer was going to write, but the officer pursued a different aspect of the detention other then a mire “fix it ticket”. The officer asked to look in the trunk of Ford’s car. Ford refused. Ford told the officer that he did not have probable cause to search his trunk. The police officer asked whether Ford was hiding something…. Ford continued to refuse several attempts by the officer to search his truck.

As the officer continued to argue, within minutes there were at least 5 police cars surrounding Ford and an overhead helicopter. Some of the additional officers that arrived to turns questioning Ford as to why he would not allow them to access his car trunk, or allow them to enter into his vehicle to search it. Ford continued to resist the officers demands to search his car or his trunk, even though Ford fear level was to the extreme, but the challenge to Ford’s constitutional rights were at stake.

Ford’s fears were justified because previously Ford had been contacted to investigate several cases by defendants and inmates who claimed drugs had been planted in the trunks of their cars, or somewhere in their vehicles in Los Angeles. It turned out that his clients were right. Coincidentally, at the time of this detention, Ford was just returning from an interview with a defendant at Airport Courthouse who had made these claims against officers, when this event occurred. Ford held his grounds because Ford wanted to make sure that everyone who lived in the area would come out of their homes and businesses out of curiosity to why all these police officers were stopping him. Ford wanted to make sure that these officers did not plant any drugs with all of the bystanders watching this event.

Later Ford would find that this was all part of what is now known as the “Rampart Scandal” in which multiple police officers were indicted for planting drugs in defendant's cars, and extorting individuals on trumped up drug offenses involving sales of narcotics. That day changed the way Ford thought about the justice system and how it was corrupted and deliberately targeted minorities and marginalized people.

Ford, the founder of C. J. Ford Private Investigations started specializing in criminal and wrongful conviction cases. Ford now manages and runs one of the largest wrongful conviction programs designed to fully investigate criminal cases. These are some of the programs objectives:

1. Investigate for evidence needed for new trials for people who have been the victim of a corrupt justice system 2. Find DNA evidence or other exculpatory evidence. 3. Find missing witnesses that were were never questioned or part of the trial that may have very critical evidence. 4. Question recanting witnesses to determine if they were coerced or extorted in giving their testimony. 5. Interview rebuttal witnesses. 6. Research history of Prosecution witnesses to make sure that they testified with clean hands. 7. Research history of police or detective to see if any other complaints of misconduct were filed. 8. Try to solve the case and put the correct person in custody. 9. Look for alternative solutions such as Pardons, Clemency, unjust sentencing, and other early release prospects.

Most of Ford’s wrongful conviction cases involve Prosecutorial Misconduct, Police Misconduct, and Ineffective Assistance Of Counsel. Ford works both on State and Federal cases. Ford also works on cases where the police department has even closed, rejected, or will not pursue,

Ford has lived in Orange County for most of his life. At age 64, he has seen firsthand the discrimination that can take place and the ways it surfaces in the criminal justice system, especially toward black people like himself. He has been involved with criminal justice for over thirty years, beginning as a bounty hunter recovering bail bonds, then moving on to private investigations. His most well-known case, that of Kenneth Clair has been ongoing for over ten years. Ford believes that everyone has the right to a fair trial, even if it takes years to overturn a wrongful conviction sentence.

Occasionally, there are guilty inmates who approach him looking to get out of prison. One inmate convicted of kidnapping, rape, brutally beating a woman, and leaving her to die sought Ford’s services. After investigating the case, Ford found that all the evidence indicated that the man was guilty. When Ford confronted the inmate, he confessed. Ford's objective is to exonerate Wrongfully Convicted People, so you do not want to have a case fully investigated if the person is guilty.

Ford has compassion for people who are wrongfully convicted and are separated from their families and friends just because Prosecutors flourish and receive promotions by the numbers of people that they convict regardless of whether or not the person is actually guilty of committing the crime. Ford believes that no matter how long it takes, a person is entitled to fight for their freedom when they are wrongfully convicted.

An example of how long and hard Ford will fight is his signature case, the Kenneth Clair Case. Kenneth Clair was convicted in 1987 of the murder of Linda Faye Rodgers in Santa Ana on November 15, 1984. Ford believes that Clair is innocent. In an ongoing investigation by Ford that has taken about a decade to complete because of opposition from not only the Prosecution, but Clair’s own defense representatives, Ford found the crime scene evidence that police said was destroyed. Later Ford discovered that the DNA was secretly tested, and Mr. Clair’s DNA was not found at the crime scene. However, another parties DNA was found at the crime scene. The DA refused to release the name of the person to the defense stating outlandish claims such as the person’s DNA is not relevant, that the DNA was left by a child that was too young to have committed the murder, that the DNA was eft by someone who wasn’t in the country at the time of the murder. However, the DA could not dispute that the DNA did not belong to Clair, which was Ford’s findings. The DA decided to come up with a theory that somehow Clair committed the crime, but Clair was careful not to leave DNA. This theory is preposterous because in 1984 when the crime was committed, DNA was not a standard or proven method until about the late 1990’s. Factually, Clair would not have known that DNA could be extracted from sweat, dandruff, touching paper or other surfaces, and from other trace evidence.

After Ford's findings, Ford took on one of the most prolific battles in the history of Orange County, which has never exonerated a death row inmate. The DA contention is to stall as much as possible, hoping that Clair dies in custody. Ford has expressed that the DA has no ethics or morals and would allow an innocent man to die to protect their “Win at all Cost” attitude. Also, Clair can claim about $125.00 per day for 34 years he has been incarcerated, plus treble damages because he has been held maliciously.

It is because of this revelation regarding the DNA not belonging to Clair’s and these other factors, made Ford’s fight for Clair’s life. One fact was a child's statements. The child actually witnessed the crime and told police detectives that it was a white man who committed the crime. Even the lead detective reported that the witness was creditable because the child’s depiction of the stab wounds, and other instruments that was used by the killer corresponded with the coroner's report. The detective tested the child using photos of different races and the child could clearly differentiate between races. The child mysteriously never testified at the trial. The fact that the child said it was a black man, the lead detectives racial test of the child was never heard from the jury.

Another factor was the Prosecution's star witness. She tried to work with the police department by wearing wires on two separate occasions to try to place Clair at the crime scene and later stated that Clair showed her some jewelry that was supposedly taken during the murder. Ford came up with overwhelming evidence and statements from the girlfriend’s care givers that was irrefutable in federal court that the girlfriend has suffered an accident that literally split her skull, and had a nearly complete memory lapse which was so severe that the girlfriend could not even remember her own mother and father. Ford’s statements from the care givers and the testimony was so powerful and conclusive that the court took it into evidence unopposed.

The care giver’s statement to the appellate court that the girlfriend was in their care during that period of time, the memory loss, and the fact that the girlfriend was so sedated taking so much medication for her illness, that she could not even walk without assistance was overwhelming. However, these two witnesses were never called on by the defense at the original trial, even though the defense was aware of the concise, factual, and critical evidence that they had to offer to their client’s defense.

The identity of the person whose DNA does match that found at the crime scene is yet undisclosed. Ford’s petition on change.org to the district attorney to release this evidence and, by extension, exonerate Kenneth Clair got over 160,000 signatures. Ford’s decision to make his findings public and to bring more attention to Clair’s case was deliberate. Ordinarily, the DA’s office would never have responded to Ford’s investigative result claims publicly, and for the most part, ignored every effort Ford made to have the DAs office review and exonerate a Clair.

So Ford started an unprecedented attack publicly on behalf of Clair on the DA’s office. Ford made sure that Clair’s case garnered attention not only on social media but also from news outlets such as the OC Register, the OC Weekly, Reason TV, and ABC. Ford pressed the DA’s office so profusely that the DA, who completely ignored Ford, now found himself in the position of having to respond to the public criticism demanding to know why the DAs office refused to give Clair a new trial or exonerate him because of the overwhelming DNA evidence that existed. The DA’s office released a seven-part series on YouTube explaining that they are refusing to allow Kenneth Clair another trial because evidence does not support it. Ford stated, “The worst mistake that the DA could’ve made was putting out that seven-part miniseries.” Ford stated that it provided him with more leads to exonerating evidence, and other evidence that the DA did not turn over according to “Brady” law, to the defense.

If Ford could retire, he says that he would become a full-time activist protesting social justice corruption, wrongful convictions, and other social injustices. However, Ford thinks that his best contribution is his investigation firm taking on wrongful convictions and criminal justice issues.
