    Requesting resubmission of Draft: SideChef

Hello, the draft page for the topic SideChef was recently deleted due to unambiguous advertising. I have since contacted the admin who deleted the draft in hopes of providing a new draft which neutral tones and fixing our previous mistakes. However, they have not yet responded and I'd like to know if I have permission to resubmit a draft for consideration now. If not, is there any way this page can still be created?

Thank you.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Am.ayz (talkcontribs)

Hi Am.ayz. At any time, you can create a new draft, be it in draft space itself, or as a user subpage (for example, at User:Am.ayz/SideChef). Since the page has already been WP:CSDed once, it is recommended the new content is very different from what it was before, otherwise it will end up being CSDed again, and persisting might result in sanctioning. Japanese flag

     Courtesy link: Flag of Japan

Hi, the Japanese Flag is quoted as a 'Rising Sun'. It is actually a 'Risen Sun'. quite a difference. The Australian military Badge represents the 'Rising Sun' by comparison. Thankyou.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 120.88.118.145 (talkcontribs) 02:46, 10 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Surely a risen sun is still a rising sun. I have never heard anybody refer to "a risen sun" in English.--Shantavira|feed me 08:37, 10 August 2021 (UTC).[reply]
Am.ayz, the Sun from noon until sunset is still risen, but it's no longer rising. If in Japanese, it is referred to as a "risen" Sun, distinct from a "rising" Sun, then in general, an English language reference should, for accuracy, make the same distinction. Let me give you an example from my own, Polish heritage. The Polish flag is white on the top half and red on the bottom half. In English, when we speak generally of those two colors together, 99.99...% of the time, we'd say red and white. But the Polish expression for the two colors of the flag is "biały i czerwony," which translates to white and red. Polish people, including people of Polish heritage (i.e., not necessarily native speakers), when speaking English will commonly refer to the colors of the Polish flag as "white and red." Uporządnicki (talk) 14:49, 10 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    This is probably a case of WP:COMMONNAME. Mjroots (talk) 16:22, 10 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Based on a cursory reading of the linked article and Names of Japan, the Japanese name does not make such any such distinction. 日本 (translated fancifully as "Land of the Rising Sun" by westerners) can also be translated more literally as "origin of the sun" or "where the sun rises". The name of the flag itself (日章旗) can be translated simply as "sun flag".
The Rising Sun badge worn by the Australian Army is a more literal depiction of the sun cresting over the horizon, but the name seems perfectly appropriate for describing the design of the Japanese flag as well. RoxySaunders (talk · contribs) 02:47, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Page on American actor, RANDY QUAID

Reading about Randy Quaid ([[1]]), I noticed one of his movies was missing from the Filmography section: "Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones" (1980 TV movie). Randy played a major role in that movie as Clayton Ritchie ([[2]]). On your page cited here on Ritchie, you do show Randy's role in portraying the character in the Jim Jones Story. For more verification, see the IMDb page in which Randy is listed among the "Top Cast." https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080832/#:~:text=Based%20upon%20the%20real%20life%20story%20of%20Reverend,became%20focused%20on%20his%20belief%20in%20nuclear%20holocaust.

Wikipedia page not displaying on the first page of SERP when we type shaan groverr

    Hi

Wikipedia page not displaying on the first page of SERP when we type shaan groverr and how can i remove user word from the top Shaangroverr (talk) 10:23, 10 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

To answer your question: you're editing your user page, which is outside of the main article namespace. By default, you won't see user pages (or anything that isn't an article, like templates or draft) in search results. You can't remove the User: part, unless your article gets moved into the main article namespace.
You should have a look at this page about Your first article, which explains almost everything about the article creation process.

MS Mega Regina article in need of updating

The article MS Mega Regina is in need of updating. Except for one picture of the ship on the Mediterranean Sea and updated information about the ship's name and owner, pretty much everything else is still about the ship's previous life as MS Mariella. What can be done about this? Is there a place to invite editors to work on the article? JIP | Talk 10:28, 10 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

JIP, you've been around for ages; you should know. Yes there is: Talk:MS Mega Regina. And if nobody seems to notice, or care, then mention that attempt of yours at a discussion on the talk page of any WikiProject that's advertised on that talk page. Edit notices don't work on subpages? (Resolved)

    Hello,

I tried to make an edit notice for a tasks subpage of my user page. However, it doesn't display when I edit the tasks subpage. The edit notice page itself has an edit notice warning me that the page title format is not correct. Is there any way I can make an edit notice for the subpage, or is it impossible? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, DesertPipeline (talk) 12:10, 10 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Citation for interview

We want to update the Wikipedia entry for ‘Glitter’ based on an interview with Henry Ruschmann Jr., who is son of the inventor of glitter Henry Ruschmann Sr. as cited in Wikipedia. Ruschmann Jr. succeeded his father as president of Meadowbrook Inventions Inc. and ran the company for decades – and is perhaps the leading authority today on glitter. Can you advise on how to cite the interview in the References section?

    RSherw (talk) 12:35, 10 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You don't need to ask here as well as at the WP:Teahouse. It wastes the time of volunteers answering a question which has already been answered. --David Biddulph (talk) 12:49, 10 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    1. Is this a published interview? If it's not published, then it's not usable under any circumstances.
    2. Interviews in general are likely to be treated as self-published sources, since an interview is simply re-stating the assertions and claims of the person interviewed. Thus, information only supported by interviews is deprecated for our purposes. --Orange Mike | Talk 12:51, 10 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Depreciated, but not banned. RSherw can use {{cite news}} or {{cite web}} or {{cite AV media}} as appropriate to cite the source where the interview was published. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 17:08, 10 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Access to the British Daily National Newspaper The Times

Does someone here subscribe to the British daily national newspaper The Times official website? I want to look at an article behind its paywall at https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/actors-make-their-voices-heard-for-audiobooks-75vgqvj0d. While I can access it via at least three different means, say Factiva, university library and national library of Scotland, there is some out there who demand to see a pdf printed from its official website. Essentially, we want to verify if the following sentences, "In the past, Stephen Hogan read novels such as Sebastian Barry's The Secret Scripture, John Boyne's The Heart's Invisible Furies, and Colm Toibin's The Heather Blazing. Until the pandemic, however, the Dublin-born actor was unfamiliar with home recording. "It was born out of a needs-must scenario," he explains, from his apartment in London. "I had always worked in studios, so this was a learning curve."" exist on there. Many thanks. Supermann (talk) 17:59, 10 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Supermann. Try asking at the Resource exchange. It is certainly the case that you should not cite a source unless you've read the relevant bit yourself: SAYWHEREYOUREADIT. --ColinFine (talk) 18:30, 10 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I did read it. Quoting your guideline, "So long as you are confident that you read a true and accurate copy, it does not matter whether you read the material using an online service like Google Books; using preview options at a bookseller's website like Amazon; through your library; via online paid databases of scanned publications, such as JSTOR; using reading machines; on an e-reader (except to the extent that this affects page numbering); or any other method." Will try your recommendation next. Supermann (talk) 18:34, 10 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Supermann:. The Times website allows casual users from the UK (and perhaps elsewhere) to create a free account which gives access to two articles a week. I have such an account and can confirm the wording is exactly as you indicated above (actually The Sunday Times of 10 January 2021). Wikipedia citations can be behind paywalls because they can still be verified in a number of ways. Clearly, The Times is a frequently-used source on the list at WP:RSPS. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:23, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks. I saw the reviewer has removed the "verification failed" maintenance tag. Maybe I'll try my UK VPN IP every now and then. Appreciate the trick. Supermann (talk) 14:58, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Robert Wise article correction

Your article on film director Robert Wise contains an inaccuracy. The character played by Valentina Cortese in 'The House on Telegraph Hill' (1951) is a concentration camp survivor (Belsen), but she is not Jewish. She happens to be Polish. Had the character been a Polish Jew, she would have been killed in Belsen.

That would place an image at the top left of a section which is discouraged by WP:IMGLOC. It would also result in the text being 'sandwiched' between two images, so other re-alignment would also be necessary. One or other, of the images could be left-aligned further down the section if desired. AS you've been asked, possibly 100s of times, before, please do not start multiple sections with the same heading. Eagleash (talk) 04:46, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Need an admin for simple task

The Ubud Writers and Readers Festival needs a redirect from (or possibly even a move to?) Ubud Writers & Readers Festival (its current styling), but that page has been blocked from creation owing to persistent vandalism in the past, apparently. The admin who did it does not appear to have edited anything since 2016, so I'm posting this here in the hope that a passing admin may be able to undo this block so that I can create the redirect page. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 06:15, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I had a look at the target page, and it seems that it was protected in January 2015, over six years ago. The admin who protected it hasn't been active on Wikipedia since December 2016, for over four years. So it looks like the issue is long outdated. Therefore I have unprotected the target page and moved the article. JIP | Talk 08:26, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I just went to that site on my mobile. GoingBatty (talk) 15:46, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)@SU Webmaster: Greetings, and welcome. Accounts become autoconfirmed after four days and ten edits, at which point uploading images becomes possible. That said, there are other issues at play here which you should take note of.
    • Firstly, your username does not appear to be in compliance with with our username policy, as it appears to be an account representing a role rather than you as an individual. Note that something like "Bob at SU" would be fine. You can request a username change here, or, since your edit here is your only edit to date, it would be just as well to cease using that account and start a new one.
    • Secondly, and most importantly, regardless of your username, if you are editing Wikipedia as part of your job duties, you must disclose your affiliation as a paid editor as per the Terms of Use to which you agreed when you created your account. See also our guidelines on conflict of interest and note that edits which appear to be promotional will not be looked upon favorably.
If you look around enough, you shouldn't have a great deal of trouble finding articles in need of minor improvements. But please read the links to policies and procedures which I have provided above before proceeding further. Thank you for your time, and feel free to ask more questions if you have them. --Finngall talk 16:11, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

As you can see the japanese version of the article has a map of the prefecture's districts INSIDE of the table for that prefecture. I want to know how to do this (I can't look at the source for the japanese article because it's all in japanese). Thanks. Bwmdjeff (talk) 16:15, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Bwmdjeff: I moved one image into the table in this edit so you can see how it's done. I used rowspan per Help:Table. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 16:32, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

two edits at the same time - different topics

Hello, I just submitted some edits for a page and am awaiting approval. Now, I want to create a new post (totally different topic) and need a blank page to start over to do that. How do I get another blank "Sandbox" or is there another way I should do this? Marcia M.

Do you mean you submitted your sandbox article for WP:AfC? You should really copy it to Draft:Your article's title and submit that instead. Then you could reuse your sandbox. Clarityfiend (talk) 20:34, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Marcia K. Morgan: While you could move your User:Marcia K. Morgan/sandbox to Draft:Anatomical doll, it is unlikely to be approved because there's already an article for Anatomically correct doll. Since you also seem to have a conflict of interest, you could declare your COI on your user page using {{UserboxCOI}} and suggest improvements to the existing article by posting them to Talk:Anatomically correct doll with the {{request edit}} template. You could also create more sandboxes (or other user subpages) such as User:Marcia K. Morgan/sandbox2 or User:Marcia K. Morgan/any text. Happy editing! In case you're still on this IP @5.170.68.242: as Arch dude says, we can't help you it-wiki. However, if they blocked you on one account, that applies to you as a person, so they are always going to block you on any other account you make, and that would itself make it far harder for you to get an unblock or make an appeal for the original action (that is, even if that block was bad, it wouldn't authorise you to keep making accounts to evade it). Delete Anwar Agewan Wikipedia

I am unable to delete anwar agewan wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anwar_Agewan

I would be thankful i can get help on how to delete it as few of the information is incorrect or lie — Preceding unsigned comment added by Garimap (talkcontribs)

Well, you could open an WP:AFD, but I doubt the article will be deleted in its current state, and the fact that you're a new editor starting an AfD may concern other editors. If you believe information within the article is incorrect and it's unsourced, you can tag it for needing a source, or outright delete it, though the latter may be considered bad practice. If the information is sourced and you nevertheless believe it to be incorrect, your best bet is likely to raise your concerns at the article's Talk page to see whether you can get a consensus that the information should be deleted. The article can't be deleted on the ground of 'notability'. I don't think that the information is incorrect, since it comes from a very authentic Encyclopedia/Who's Who Dictionary, which have been prepared by very genuine scholars of Gujarati literature and published by very reputed literary institutions. If User:Garimap has any issue with the information, they should directly contact these institutions which have published the cited references. --Gazal world (talk) 10:39, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Categories such as "Category:Chinese mathematicians"

As a word, "Chinese" can be used to indicate residence (location), citizenship (law), genetic ancestry (biology), or ethnic group affiliation (behavior). For categories like "Category:Chinese mathematicians", which of these do we mean? Blurring the distinction between these categories could easily be classified as (inadvertent) racism: e.g., that U.S. citizens of Japanese genetic ancestry were rounded up in World War 2 is widely viewed as racism.

Obviously this applies to other countries as well. How do I start a discussion to address this issue? —Q uantling (talk | contribs) 21:13, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Quantling: It's for nationality. That's why Category:Chinese mathematicians is in Category:Mathematicians by nationality. Wikipedia:Categorization/Ethnicity, gender, religion and sexuality#General says: "Do not create categories that are a cross-section of a topic with an ethnicity, gender, religion, or sexual orientation, unless these characteristics are relevant to the topic." Ethnicity is not considered relevant for mathematicians so there is no category for mathematicians in Category:People of Chinese descent by occupation. I'm a bit surprised we have Category:American academics of Chinese descent. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:59, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: Thank you for the quick response. Just to be sure that I get it -- by "nationality" you mean "citizenship" so a "Chinese mathematician" is a citizen of China? (Well, I suppose if a person's citizenship changes over their lifetime then it could be more confusing, but let's stick to the simple case of someone whose citizenship remains constant.) —Quantling (talk | contribs) 00:30, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Quantling: Bascially yes, but citizenship has a specific legal meaning and is often just an assumption. You don't have to know the legal status of somebody to classify them as a Chinese mathematician. If they work in China, have a Chinese sounding name, and you have no reason to think they are not Chinese citizens, then just place them in Category:Chinese mathematicians. But don't claim on the category page that it is for mathematicians with Chinese citizenship. That may deter editors from adding people who belong there. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:46, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: Thank you. I wasn't trying to measure how much certainty we need; I was just trying to figure out what we are measuring. If (it is likely enough that) the person is a Chinese citizen and (likely enough that the person) is a mathematician then that's what we mean by "Chinese mathematician". So long as that is understood, and it is not also a blur with genetic ancestry, ethnic group affiliation, or location of residence then I am good. —Quantling (talk | contribs) 00:57, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How to approach an editor with a certain editing style?

Vague title I know... but I do have a question regarding this - and it may sound silly, but I've been an editor on Wikipedia for a number of years now and never have run into this problem.

There's an editor that has recently been ramming through articles (will not call this editor out - this isn't a content dispute complaint), taking a "slash and burn" style of editing (slashing out large chunks of articles), largely without seeking consensus first... much with a "my way or the highway" approach. One of the reasons this editor gives is that there are no citations. Another reason is/may be that whatever subject is being had is "not notable". Another is that photos may be of too poor quality - thus deleted; others photos may be too good. This editor often refers to Wikipedia informational pages as justification for his/her edits - although what is likely obvious, these pages are only informational pages and not guidelines. There are other instances where this editor will cite guidelines... but instead of direct interpretations of the guidelines, this editor will make subjective interpretations for justifications of his/her edits.

There is one other editor that has been editing on Wikipedia a bit longer than I have... I think that he may have a slightly better handle on this editor than I do, although it ain't perfect as this editor is everywhere. In any case, my question is: How does one approach an editor with this type editing style??? The editor in question has free rein as he/she is autoconfirmed and in the process, has turned off new editors to editing -- which is a big concern for both myself and the other editor. Turning off new editors is not very constructive and I can't think of a way to keep this from happening to new editors. Again, how can one approach this? My first time having to deal with someone - an editor, like this (first time for everything, I guess ~o~; ). Sorry if this is a silly question :/ .

...and please be nice... there are so many places to ask questions -- I'm so confused where to ask this xD ..... Hanyou23 (talk) 03:43, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hanyou23 the generic advice is at Wikipedia:Dispute resolution and covers both content and behaviour disputes. If this relates to the latest discussion on your talk page, the advice was to discuss the issues on the article talk page. TSventon (talk) 11:11, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
TSventon Nah, I realize that. The original discussion happened on the unnamed editor's talk page before the messages on my talk page appeared. A discussion on an article's talk page - a GA article that I and the other experienced editor are heavily involved with, was created thereafter and things got interesting from there. The editor in question is having trouble with consensus, it seems, by seeking input from one other talk page, but consensus is holding for now. The article is on that one editor's radar though, so that's why was asking for the best approach. Wikipedia:Dispute resolution is the only way? Hanyou23 (talk) 18:34, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The description you posted here doesn't suggest to me that the other editor is doing anything wrong (against policy), and nor does the discussion on your talk page. Hence you probably can't do anything to change their editing style, only about content disputes, where Wikipedia:Dispute resolution gives good advice. TSventon (talk) 23:24, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    Got 'ya. Thank you :) ! Hanyou23 (talk) 02:38, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hanyou23 I would also recommend gradually (skim)reading some of the main policies of Wikipedia, starting by clicking on the links at Help:Introduction to policies and guidelines. If people think there is a problem with your behaviour, they will probably tell you, while if you think there is a problem with some one else's behaviour, you need to do some research. If you have a specific content dispute, then look for a specific policy, e.g. Wikipedia:Categorization for the guideline on using categories. TSventon (talk) 10:08, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Australian, British, Irish, and Scottish English

Hi. I'm working on several articles which use non-American varieties of the English; e.g. Australian, British, Irish, and Scottish English. I have some question about the grammar and wording. Is there a specific project for Australian/British/Irish/Scottish English? Where can I ask my questions or request for the help? Thank you. Wario-Man talk 06:55, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Wario-Man, you could ask at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors. However they only work on articles that do not contain original research or lack citations. TSventon (talk) 08:13, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Wario-Man: If you haven't already, have a look at WP:ENGVAR, which gives information on which English variant might be best for an article, and the differences which might need to be considered between variants. Bazza (talk) 09:03, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Leahorr, since this is your only edit so far, the simple way to do that is to stop using this account (ever) and register a new one. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 16:38, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Leahorr, if that is your real name, you might want to reconsider using it. Using your real name on wiki can sometimes attract off-wiki harassment, especially for women. —valereee (talk) 16:49, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång I don't think she can do that - the new name would be in violation of the WP:SIMILARNAME policy (the system of course won't know she's actually the same person). She'd have to request an account to "usurp" (that's not quite what's happening, but it's the closest I can think of) the name. Matt Deres (talk) 18:27, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Matt Deres Ah, so it can be technically impossible, unless usurping. Was not aware of that, thanks. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:31, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Gråbergs Gråa Sång, I'll echo valleree's comment. It is sad to make this recommendation, and I note the irony that I do use my real name (would do it differently if I were to start today), but the use of a pseudnym would be a good idea. As a small benefit, that would not require usurping, you could just create a new account and abandon the existing one. S Philbrick(Talk) 14:59, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Subject deemed "Not notable"

    Good afternoon,

The page submitted for Darren Dean, has returned as being "not notable", even after edits/updates. Darren Dean has a proven list of credits beyond IMDB. Could you please advise on why this page is not published?

Best, — Preceding unsigned comment added by MVworks! (talkcontribs)

Draft:Darren Dean - I'm curious as to why IMDb is still being used as a reference within the article when an editor commented five months ago that links to it (and YouTube) would need to be replaced. Additionally, the article contains unsourced biographical information, which I don't believe is acceptable for an article about a living person. Cheers. DonIago (talk) 20:57, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, MVworks. Please read about Wikipedia's special meaning for notability. In most cases it is not a matter of what the person has done, said, or created, but of what other people have published about the person, because Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is almost entirely interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If enough material is cited from independent sources to establish notability, a limited amount of uncontroversial factual information may be added from non-independent sources. If little independent material has been published about the person, then there is essentially nothing which can go in the article. --ColinFine (talk) 20:58, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@MVworks: Another problem that leaps out to me is that you filled the article with background info about the various films. I think you are under the impression that making them seem more important will show that Dean is also important. However, as producer, his claim to fame is having produced them. Also, you want to save the reader's attention for info about him, not the films, unless his specific contributions are being discussed. Otherwise, if the films have articles, linking to them with a single sentence descriptor is sufficient. That's what Wiki-links are for. Blue links denote notability to other experienced editors who are reviewing your draft. Lastly, there's no way around learning how to build proper references. Just putting names at the end of paragraphs won't work. See Help:Referencing for beginners. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 21:43, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Doniago: Please study WP:N and WP:NARTIST. To establish notability by our definition, you will need multiple reliable sources that support notability. This is a higher standard than just being reliable, and it's easy to mess up. See WP:CSMN. -Arch dude (talk) 01:19, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but I'm not the one who posted the question. Cheers. DonIago (talk) 01:31, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    "Suggested edit" tag

Hello! I am seeing edits tagged as #suggestededit-add 1.0, that are mostly adding short descriptions to articles. I tried to go to Recent Changes and use this tag to filter the results, but it is not listed in the "tagged edits" section of the filter. How would I go about filtering the edits using this tag? The edits I have seen lately are not quite correct, so I'd like to keep an eye on them. Thanks! –FlyingAce✈hello 23:58, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@FlyingAce: Please post an example edit. Always include an example when you report or ask about an issue. I could only find edits where #suggestededit-add 1.0 is the edit summary, e.g. [6]. New to Wiki

    HI,

Can anyone create wiki profiles on other people? how to link these to other institutions on wiki. Ie an Olympian/professional sports person who has their own page, how do i or could i link their page to the schools alumni page or other institution? Does it automatically link or do i have to enter information manually into the sports persons page and then the schools page?

    Thank you

    Annette

Hi Annette. I'm not sure if I understood you correctly, but I'll try to answer your questions. Can anyone create wiki profiles on other people? If you mean articles on other people, then yes, anyone can create and add information about people on Wikipedia, as long as it follows the notability criteria and doesn't break our guidelines on biographies of living people. Please see a guide on how to create your first article. how to link these to other institutions on wiki. If you mean link to other wiki pages, you should read "How do I make links?" from our FAQ. These are called "wikilinks" and must be added manually by editors. Isabelle 🔔 02:45, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Annette, and welcome to Wikipedia. The answer to your question is that (almost) anybody may edit (almost) any Wikipedia article; but that does not mean that it is necessarily easy to edit correctly, and people who plunge in and try to create new articles before they have spent time learning how Wikipedia works often have a frustrating and disappointing time. Please have a look at Help:introduction. One other point: Wikipedia does not contain "profiles" - not one. It contains encyclopaedia articles, which may be written by anybody (but preferably not by their subject or somebody closely associated with the subject) based almost completely on reliable published sources unconnected with the subject. --ColinFine (talk) 09:13, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi CarmenSmith1. It appears that I Cannot Bury the Shadow In My Room is a novel, which means that it needs to satisfy the notability criteria for novels and books. From a quick search, that does not appear to be the case, but you are always welcome to create a draft if you believe it meets the notablity criteria. I'd also recommend you read a guide on how to create your first article. Isabelle 🔔 02:37, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    User block report

User Superinformative is making editing war and refuse to discuss in the article Tilahun Gessesse's talk page by simply changing the historical birthplace of Ethiopia during the Italian rule, which is then called "Italian East Africa" (1936–1941), he was born in 1940. I had tried to request protection but the bot delete my submission, and instead I'm here to address such disruption by user. Some of edits appear here:

Superinformative and The Supermind have been engaged in an edit war at Tilahun Gessesse, though neither has come close to violating WP:3RR, so there would be no justification for a block. The Supermind has started a discussion on the talk page (thank you, The Supermind) to which Superinformative has not yet responded. Superinformative has twice accused The Supermind of vandalism, with no justification: I assume they haven't read WP:VD.   Maproom (talk) 08:33, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How do I offer to correct these minor errors?

    Reference

    1. Kenneth M Byrne. Minister PAP. Had no son, only 1 daughter.

    2. Someone is claiming incorrectly to be one of the 9 founding fathers of PAP. There is evidence to prove otherwise.

    Thank you L. M. Parry

Hi L. M. Parry. I've checked the two articles you mentioned and I couldn't find any obvious error related to what you pointed. The People's Action Party sources the nine founding members and I couldn't access the source in the Kenneth Michael Byrne article. If you believe there to be an error, be bold and fix it, giving appropriate sources. Isabelle 🔔 14:44, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Anyone may have an account. In fact, anyone can edit. However, if you are unsure of your writing ability and spelling ability, you should probably not edit articles directly. Instead, you may make suggestions for improvements to an article on the article's talk page, and another editor can then handle the proper language for you. -Arch dude (talk) 15:04, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Missing pin on Infobox map

I have added {{Infobox bridge}} (including | coordinates = {{coord|54|53|50.6|N|1|41|16.1|W|display=inline,title|region:GB type:landmark}}) to the Causey Arch article, but it only shows the pin on the map while in preview mode. When I read the article normally, there is no pin. I think all my brackets are correctly terminated, and nothing else seems to go wrong. The pin does appear if I click on the map to make it full screen.--Verbarson (talk) 16:35, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

MSIE is now something of an antique; are you using the latest versions of Edge and Chrome? -- Hoary (talk) 22:08, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Tell me about it. I have to use it professionally for one essential program that uses ActiveXes. However, IE and Edge are as up-to-date as a security-conscious IT policy can keep them. Chrome may be a bit older.
The Chrome on the Lubuntu box is Version 92.0.4515.131 (Official Build) (64-bit).
I have yet to find another article/infobox that fails to show the pin.--Verbarson (talk) 06:35, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Solution (of sorts). I have entirely removed the {{coords}} from the coordinates parameter. The pin now appears on the map (presumably based on the OS grid ref?) and the coordinates still appear in the infobox (though not at the head of the article). Can anyone explain this? --Verbarson (talk) 15:16, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Souvidghoshias. Thank you for wanting to improve Wikipedia. THat article certainly could do with expansion. But I think you need to be careful: looking at the article's history, there have been many attempts to add material, subsequently removed because it was not cited or not neutral. Remember that Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. More or less every statement you add should be supported by a citation to a reliable source independent of Anukulchandra and his movement. It might be a good idea to ask for a collaborator at WT:INDIA. --ColinFine (talk) 19:02, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Edit link

On en.wiki, if I edit a section of a page, the edit link is to the far right, which is where I want it. I assume this is somewhere in my Preferences, but I'm not sure where. When I edit at meta, I also want the edit link in the same position, but it's just to the right of the section header. I went through Preferences on meta, but I couldn't find it. Thanks for any help.--Bbb23 (talk) 18:35, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Bbb23: You probably have the gadget "Move section [edit] links to the right side of the screen" (Preferences → Gadgets → Appearance) enabled here on en.wp. It doesn't seem to exist on meta, but you should be able to use it there by putting @import url("https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Gadget-righteditlinks.css?action=raw&ctype=text/css"); at the top of your m:Special:MyPage/common.css. – Rummskartoffel 19:54, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Rummskartoffel: It doesn't work. You can look at it on meta and tell me if I did anything wrong. Thanks.--Bbb23 (talk) 21:21, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Bbb23: You're missing the semicolon at the end. Try adding that, that might fix it. With the semicolon, it works for me. – Rummskartoffel 21:27, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Rummskartoffel: It does indeed. I figured it was my fault. It'd be so much better if I understood the syntax rather than following instructions mindlessly. Thanks! --Bbb23 (talk) 21:30, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Bbb23: By now it's too late for me answer differently, but there's an explanation of the syntax at MDN if you're interested. Besides, I wasn't aware the semicolon mattered, either – I'm not very intimately familiar with CSS, so I was relaying instructions mindlessly –, that was just the obvious difference. – Rummskartoffel 10:35, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Rummskartoffel: But you knew enough to tell me what to do and to make it relatively easy for me to do it. I had no clue where to start, so forgive me but I think I still win the prize for mindlessness. The irony is I don't edit at meta very often, so it's a minor improvement. Regards.--Bbb23 (talk) 12:02, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Foreign Language link wrong person

There seems to be some confusion as there are 2 people with the name Andrew Gower.

Andrew Christopher Gower (born 1978) is a computer programmer whose English Wikipedia page was recently merged with the one from Jagex (which I thnk he created).

There is however also an actor called Andrew Gower (born 1989).

When Andrew Christopher Gower's Wikipedia page was merged with the Jagex one, it meant that if people looked for Andrew Gower (the actor), they were also redirected to the Jagex page.

I suggested to change that and apparently it was. If you're currently looking for Andrew Gower, you are directed to the actor's page BUT if you click any of the links to read the article in a different language, you suddenly end up on the foreign language page for the computer programmer.

Andrew Gower (the actor) has pages on Wikipedia in English, German, Egyptian Arabian and Hebrew (according to the German article).

I don't know how this can be fix but I hope it can!

Where to put the dash, if any in this title?

I would like to create an article on an emerging software architecture called "micro frontend". I am however confused about the spelling to use:

    • I have found at least 5 books as potential sources, which all use the spelling "Micro frontend". There are also dozen of web articles using the same spelling. So this appears to be the spelling used by the specialists of the field.
    • However this spelling is not consistent with the traditional use of "micro" which is concatenated to the noun that it characterises, such as Microprocessor, Micrometer or Microservices (which is, by the way, in the same software architecture field as micro frontends).
    • Moreover on a couple of secondary sources, I have found the spelling "Micro-frontend"
    • To make it worse, it appears on wikipedia and in the literature that the second term can be written "front end" (as in the title of wikipedia article Front end and back end), "frontend" (as in the body of that same article), "front-end" (as in the body of the wikipedia disambiguation page Front end.
    • A review of academic computing papers (ACM library, published between 1974 and 2021) shows 89 articles using "front-end" spelling in the title, 35 using "front end", and 16 using "frontend". If reducing this corpus to the articles focused on user interfaces, the proportion remains similar.
    • A look in the Ngram viewer does not help further: it shows a predominance of "front end", then "front-end", then "frontend". However, the corpus is general purpose and not as specilaized as the ACM corpus.
    • The Wikipedia Manual of style clarifies the capitalization rules. But, I see an issue in the using commonly accepted names considering the diversity above (the spelling of the recent books on the topics seem then the best candidate?) vs the recommendation to avoid dashes.

The following title seem possible "Micro frontend", "Microfrontend", Micro-frontend", "Micro front-end", "Micro front end", "Micro-front-end" (other combinations would be possible but inconsistent). Therefore, to prevent a lot of successive name changes and unnecessary hassle, I would like to know what would be the recommended wording applying the wikipedia rules and style guide.

Thanks in advance Christophe (talk) 23:30, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Per WP:COMMONNAME, you should use the name which is most commonly used for this subject. From what you've said, I would say that would be "Micro frontend" since that's what is used by most authors writing about it. The fact that the name is inconsistent with other uses of the micro- prefix is not a strong argument to use a nonstandard name. We have articles with similar stand-alone "micro" in their names, when that is the most commonly used name, such as Micro black hole, Micro Transport Protocol, Micro hydro, Micro air vehicle, Micro ribbon connector, Micro combined heat and power, etc. CodeTalker (talk) 00:44, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Reversing a redirect

Ibrahim El-Salahi is a redirect to Ibrahim el-Salahi. But, of the sources it cites that I'm able to access and that mention his name, 15 use "El" and only one uses "el". Maproom (talk) 09:22, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Maproom: Since the redirect has more than one line in its history, the move needs an admin. The usual way to request this is with {{db-move}} -- John of Reading (talk) 09:35, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Maproom: What a mess. Take a look at Wikipedia:Arabic names and its links. Apparently, the "proper" English translation of an Arabic name with "al-" or "el-" is the uncapitalized form and our convention is to use that as the article name, but the uncapitalized forms are so common in the sources that we are advised to be very aggressive about creating redirects. Essentially, the "el" or "al" means "the", so capitalizing is is equivilent to capitalizing "the" in Bob the Builder. -Arch dude (talk) 16:33, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If I submit an article and wikiepedia says it will be reviewed in about a week, then I make edits 3 days later and publish again, does my article for review stay in the same place in the que, or does the clock start over and my article goes back to the end of the que?
