The Burmese passport or the Myanmar passport is the passport issued to citizens and nationals of Burma (officially called "the Republic of the Union of Myanmar").

In 2002, Myanmar began issuing electronic passports. Burmese passports contain a microchip embedded in them that carries identifying information about the passport holder. UN special envoy Razali Ismail, part owner of Iris corporation, which won the contract to install the new system, dismissed security concerns, and said, "Must you think of things in such sinister terms? Anyway, it’s only for those people who want to travel outside. In most cases, those will be government people."[1]

Types

Three types are currently[when?] issued by Ministry of Home Affairs. Government officials are issued with a green passport. Diplomats are issued with a blue passport. All other citizens receive a red passport. The red passport is valid for 5 years and the green passport for three.

Currently,[when?] ordinary passport holders can travel to Cambodia, India (Visa on Arrival), Indonesia, Laos, Maldives, Macau (Visa on Arrival), Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam without a visa. [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]

In April 2010 the Myanmar passport was upgraded from hand-written to machine readable passport.
