Busia is a county in the former Western Province of Kenya. It borders Kakamega County to the east, Bungoma County to the north, Lake Victoria and Siaya County to the south and Busia District, Uganda to the west.

Economy

The main economic activity is trade with neighbouring Uganda, with Busia town - the county headquarters and largest town - being a cross-border centre. Away from town, the county economy is heavily reliant on fishing and agriculture, with cassava, millet, sweet potatoes, beans, and maize being the principal cash crops.

People

Though most residents of Busia County are ethnically Luhya, there is also a substantial population of Luo and Iteso residents.

The county has a total population of 743,946 (2009 census).

Busia County Think Tank Society

Professionals in Busia County have formed Busia County Think Tank Society in bid to bring together all professionals and other stakeholders of Busia County to donate their expertise for the sole purpose of growth and development of Busia County. The founders of this society include: Dr. Vitalis Ogemah, a Lecturer at Masinde Muliro University; Major (Rtd) Patrick Musibi, a Consultant on Developmental matters; Mr. Sylvester Namagwa, a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya and a Management expert; and Bonaventure Nalugala, an Economist and Tax consultant. The activities of the society covers virtually all spheres of the economy.

Busia County Think Tank Society is a ‘give back to the society’ initiative, where professionals in their respective areas of specialization donate their brain and expertise to help the county make progress in all its spheres for economic growth and development.http://busiacountythinktanksociety.webs.com/about-us[dead link]
