Proposed deletion of Sepultura's 11th Studio Album

Why? All of the information on that page can be found in a number of sources, such as the band's official website, interviews w/ the band in magazines such as Revolver and Terrorizer, and their Myspace. I think that nominating it for deletion was a stupid choice, but I'll try my best to make sure that the article stays. How can we improve it if there isn't even an article to improve? Afd - Software compatibility

Dougie WII

First - sorry I edited your user page - not your talk page. I've (I will have ...) gone back and fixed that now.

I believe strongly that software compatibility is an issue which should be discussed, and I also think that there should be an article about it in Wikipedia. Many systems fail or do not work correctly or appropriately because of compatibility issues. I note your comments and I am trying to improve the article. So far I appear to be the only one who has attempted to do this.

I take the point that "finger pointing" at particular software components which are known to be incompatible may be controversial, though that in itself is not a justification for avoiding inclusion. However a case may be made for putting such information outside Wikipedia if it is likely to cause problems.

Rather than simply invoke a set of rules which will remove such articles in a short period of time, have you thought of actually editing the article and making a postive contribution yourself? I am happy to work with others to improve this and other articles, but I really don't want to get in a situation where any new articles I create are immediately flagged for deletion because they are not fully fledged or complete with a full set of citations. I have doubts about the verifiability policy as well - but I don't suppose I'm allowed to disagree with that. Verifiability which is only based on previously written third party sources is OK, but firstly it discourages new work, and secondly it may in fact be subject to errors, as often there are errors in reference works which are propagated by repetition. Sometimes the only way to check veracity is to go back to the original source, and I can see situations in the future where even this may be difficult, as sources may be forged or altered, or may themselves contain errors. An example would be where a first performance of a musical work is referred to in the incorrect year. Primary source material would be a programme from the concert, but it is always possible that due to a printing error the year on the original programme is incorrect. Unlikely, but possible.

Hi Doug,

Are you from the USA? I'm from Australia, and I don't mind you deleting CMNScoop, but it's featured some pretty big Christian acts and is quite big in Australia, but I'm a big fan of it. I don't think it's been around as long as Hillsong or Planetshakers, but they've interviewed the likes of Bishop Frazier and Bethany Hamilton if you know who they are (they are from America).

No, you linked it to the former discussion. I fixed that link and started a whole new discussion. You're violating policy by changing a title as well as not bothering to start a discussion in the first place. Your continued changing of titles is violating policy and unlinking the discussion from the page move request page. You must either not have read my post to your page or simply be unable to comprehend English since Wikipedia:Requested_moves says that Requested moves should be the standard title put in by the template for such discussions. Hey. My last change to the article isn't vandalism and the additions ain't promotional materials as it doesn't fall under any of the 4 listed cats. (propaganda, opinion, self promo and advert).

Also, the article is about a song that Westlife has recorded thus, it is appropriate to include a single info box and details of the release on that page.

Your additions overpowered the main and most important parts of the article in an apparent attempt at of advertising/promotion. Westlife's version of Mandy deserves no more than the footnote it already has, and that's not just my opinion, but the consensus of those who edited that page. Complex abuse problems are different than simple vandalism

I am not saying that the user you have a problem with is in the right, and should be allowed to continue (I am also not saying the opposite, and should be blocked. I am making no statement on the matter at hand). However, AIV is not the correct venue for any reports of complex abuse problems more complicated than simple vandalism (i.e. inserting "is a homo" after a name, page blanking, stuff like that). Those sorts of problems need to be reported to The incidents notice board where you can make a detailed report, and other admins can examine, investigate and discuss the problem. Again, you may or may not have a valid concern, but AIV is just not specifically equipped to deal with your problem. Try WP:ANI instead. --Jayron32.talk.contribs 03:13, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

SOD Images

Anything uploaded from SOD is not allowable. SOD buys their pictures from JPI and anything they own, they own, including "screen shots" which aren't really screen shots. JPI is the official soap photog and uploading pictures from there is a violation of Wiki policy. I understand the frustration, believe me, but it is never appropriate to respond to incivility with more incivility. Instead, the most effective way to handle things is to document the behavior. Get a diff of the most egregious comments, and post them to the editor's talkpage, with a caution and a link to the appropriate Wikipedia policies. These kinds of things have a definite cumulative effect. Even if you don't get an immediate response, they have longterm benefit (and make things much easier for the admins).

Now, any further discussion about the article, please keep on the article talkpage. I would also appreciate if you would review any of your own comments that may have been uncivil, and edit them to make them more presentable. WebCanvas

Hi, thanks for warning me deletion of the WebCanvas wikipedia page. I think that this project/initiative WebCanvas has enough significance/notability to be introduced on this great online encyclopedia. The reasons for this are that: this project is inovative in a number of ways, from implementing an Infinite Canvas to allowing anyone to view other people drawing simply through their web browser. This on-line collaborative painting project is also comparable to other projects, such as Zoomquilt, which have their own wikipedia page. Hence is would make a lot of sense for wikipedia to also have a page on this project. I hope that you understand my point of view. Templated Messages

Its is considered extremely bad form to use templated messages communicate with established editors. I would very much appreciate it if you reviewed the above link. When you do NPP you really should check the contribution history of the editor creating the article. Reqests to speedy articles written by established and clueful editors are invariably going to be poor decisions. Even if an admin isn't paying attention and deletes the thing the aticle will be restored on request and much drama may ensue. This isn't the way we want to treat the editors who do the most important thing of all - creating decent new content....

If you are wondering what I'm referring to, its the templated message you left for user Chubbles and the tag you added to Chick Wilson. You added a tag to the article when it was in this state. The article was riddled with blue tags which clearly indicated that the subject was connected to a lot of significant jazz players and the article also had a reference. Unsurprisingly the CSD tag didn't stick. A7 doesn't mean that every article that doesn't say that "X is notable because of Y" gets deleted. Its a method of getting rid of cruft and no article with as many blue links and a reference is cruft. Please take more care in future. Thank you. Spartaz ^Humbug! 06:40, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

I´m not adding promotional material

sorry for the inconvenience, but my article (MacFamilyTree) got speedy deleted because of promotional content.
I´m not trying to promote any software.
Currently, I´m working with genealogy software on Mac OS X and I wanted to write some articles, to the software already mentioned in the genealogy software article.

I´m keeping the text short and just add a small infobox, so there are no dead links from the genealogy software article. Will that suffice?

I understand your feelings, and I sympathize. But participants on Wikipedia are expected to adopt a certain amount of decorum. That's why we have policies such as Wikipedia:Civility and Wikipedia:No personal attacks. Higher status is also perceived of users who are able to see a dispute and act to de-escalate it, rather than escalate it. Your comment, though you may have felt justified in making it, served absolutely no purpose of de-escalation. The only possible thing it could do was to escalate the dispute. So please, in the future, try to find other ways of expressing your concerns. Point someone at WP:NPA, or contact an administrator. See also Dealing with disruptive editors. But please, don't just engage in name-calling, otherwise you may find yourself suffering the same consequences as the person that you're attacking. :/ When a new administrator comes to a dispute, they often don't look into the history to see the background, and they really don't care "who started it". They care about what they see, at the time that they're looking. And if they see two editors who are just being equally rude, many administrators will simply block both editors. I think that WP page is wrong, all the scientific articles I've read including the ones cited here list canines as carnivores, even though they do tend to eat more plant matter than obligate carnivores such as cats. Hi and thanks for the kind note on this Ifd; I far prefer resolving these issues one-to-one (or at least disagreeing one-to-one) first. In explanation of my decision to delete this file:

The nomination was on the basis that the image did not significantly increase reader's understanding (NFCC#8) and also that it fell into one of the "unacceptable use" categories under the non-free content interpretation guideline
WebHamster responded that the image was used in a section about the stamp and claimed that the in-context it met the guidelines, though they did not state how it met the significance requirement nor why an image that was covered by "unacceptable use" was to be allowed.
Stifle stated that it was PD as the object depicted was sufficiently old. I note here that the image page did NOT claim that it was public domain.
Quadell refuted that it was PD and re-iterated that the image failed NFCC#8
Howcheng and the nominator chimed in that in their opinion it was not a PD image
Yourself stated largely that the use of the image was to illustrate the stamp, though without addressing the "unacceptable use" problem nor showing how the image significantly increases reader's understanding.

Resulting from this the image is not public domain (so we must meet the criteria), falls into one of the examples of "unacceptable use" and no-one has sufficiently refuted this and lastly the arguments as to it significantly increasing reader's understanding fell short of those saying that it did not. The usual requirements for meeting NFCC#8 that I have seen applied are either that the article is about the whole image (in this case an article about the stamp) or that the article discusses the particulars of the image in such a way that reader's understanding is much decreased by not being able to see the image itself; simple illustration of a thing being talked about is usually insufficient. I'm sorry but aftre reviewing this, I see things the same way as when I closed it and will understand if you want to take this to DrV. - Peripitus (Talk) 06:54, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

RE: Crayon colors/Revert

They are patently NOT the colors that appear in a box of crayons. If you look at an actual Crayola crayon against the display on the web, as I have, you will notice that many of the colors on the website (violet being the most atrocious example0 are too pastel. You ask for a source; I could cite the box of crayons, and the myriad of Crayola crayon images, on and off the Crayola website. For reference, I spent a long time staring at crayons to attempt to discern their hex triplets, and I do not appreciate it being done in a single stroke. Your values are still there in the history. I'll try to get some other opinions on how these colors should be determined. Our next Wikipedia NYC Meetup is this weekend on Saturday Dec 4 at Brooklyn Museum during their awesome First Saturdays program, starting at 5 PM.

From Gh87: This image is now sourced as this: "For promotion of the television show Passions, the image was released by NBC's press office to various media outlets in 1999 to promote the named programme. As Wikipedia is a non-profit organisation, it's usage does not violate the terms of it's original release - which was to help promote and visulise viewers with the cast of the named series."
In other words, your image will not be deleted as the promo image is proven a fair use.

You are invited to join us for a full Saturday (drop-in any time!) of social Wikipedia editing at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) for our upcoming "WikiArte" Latin America Edit-a-thon, for Wiki Arte y Cultura Latinoamericana, a communal day of creating, updating, improving, and translating Wikipedia articles about Latin American art and culture.

11:00am - 5:00 pm (drop-in anytime!) at MoMA Cullman Education and Research Building, 4 West 54th Street

All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required. We will provide training sessions and resources for beginner Wikipedians, WiFi, reference materials, and suggested topics, as well as childcare and refreshments.

Please bring your laptop, power cord, and ideas for articles that need to be updated, translated, or created. You are welcome to edit all day or drop by to show your support, and to follow #WikiArte on social media!

Trainings for new and less experienced Wikipedia editors will be offered (in English) at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. Tutorials and resources in Spanish will be available online, and participants are also encouraged to work on the Spanish and Portuguese language editions of Wikipedia.

The Guggenheim aims to further the goals of Ada Lovelace Day for STEM, and Art+Feminism for art, in a field that, by its nature combines both.

The Guggenheim will work alongside ArchiteXX, the founders of WikiD: Women Wikipedia Design #wikiD, the international education and advocacy program working to increase the number of Wikipedia articles on women in architecture and the built environment. New and experienced editors are welcome.

Join us for a full Sunday of social Wikipedia editing at the Center for Jewish History (drop-in any time!), during which we will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles pertaining to Women in Jewish History.

All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required.

Expanding coverage of Jewish women on Wikipedia makes these women and their creations discoverable, addresses the gender bias on Wikipedia in a positive way, and works to correct imbalances archival collecting practice and institutional projects that have historically silenced women's narratives.

A training session on editing Wikipedia will be held at 12:30 pm. Experienced Wikipedians will be on-hand to assist throughout the day. Please bring your laptop and power cord; we will have library resources, WiFi, and a list of suggested topics on hand.

Light refreshments will be provided.

On Sunday, October 16, Wikimedia NYC will host a multimedia tutorial, workshop, and hackathon focused on Wikimedia Commons and the work processes for cultural multimedia wiki-projects.

The CommonsLab is the concluding "upload party" to the Wikipedia @ Open House New York Weekend photo scavenger hunt, and an accompanying Wikimedia Commons multimedia hackathon.

The event will take the form of a modified unconference, with sessions for photographers/creatives, editors/writers and hackers/software folks!

Join us for a full Saturday of social Wikipedia editing at the Museum of Modern Art (drop-in any time!), during which we will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles pertaining to the lives and works of Latin American artists.

The WikiArte (Wiki Arte y Cultura Latinoamerica) edit-a-thon is a global campaign to improve Wikipedia's coverage of Latin American arts and culture and to counter geocultural systemic bias on Wikipedia.

Featuring an opening Artists' Panel at 10am, with Sol Aramendi, Sharon Lee De La Cruz, and Marisa Morán Jahn, to be moderated by Rocío Aranda-Alvarado, curator at El Museo del Barrio.

The Museum of Modern Art and Fundacion Cisneros/Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros are uniting with international allies to focus on the lives and works of Latin American artists, architects and designers. With keystone events scheduled for October 22 in New York City and other cities throughout the month (Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Caracas, & others), the campaign aims to further similar goals to Art+Feminism.

All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required. Introductory training on the basics of Wikipedia editing will be given throughout the edit-a-thon. Please bring your laptop and power cord; we will have library resources, WiFi, and a list of suggested topics on hand.

Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! New deal for page patrollers

In order to better control the quality of new pages, keep out the spam, and welcome the genuine newbies, the current system we introduced in 2011 is being updated and improved. The documentation and tutorials have also been revised and given a facelift. Most importantly a new user group New Page Reviewer has been created.

Under the new rule, you may find that you are temporarily unable to mark new pages as reviewed. However, this is nothing to worry about - most current experienced patrollers are being accorded the the new right without the need to apply, and if you have significant previous experience of patrolling new pages, we strongly encourage you to apply for the new right as soon as possible - we need all the help we can get, and we are now providing a dynamic, supportive environment for your work.

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
