Wikiproject Correction and Detention Facilities

Thanks for your expression of interest in Wikipedia Prisons, otherwise known as Wikiproject Correction and Detention Facilities. Seven people have now indicated here that they would like to help out so I am now assuming that this project will actually happen. I suppose we need to take care of a few preliminaries: getting through the proposal stage, and creating a wikiproject page, page tag, and maybe an infobox. Thanks again for your interest. --Cdogsimmons (talk) 00:55, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

As you can see, this project has now taken off. Thanks for your support!--Cdogsimmons (talk) 01:28, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi. I see that Doc glasgow states that he has left the project.

You had a bit to do with this article, so I wanted to run it past another admin - I've restored the page and its talk page. I've also added a reference to the article. I don't think that Doc glasgow adequately justified his speedy deletion, and that it ought to go through AfD if it's going to be deleted again. - Richard Cavell (talk) 07:34, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Geelong - The First 150 Years - Peter Begg

It was published back in 1990 - so getting a new copy might be tricky - dunno how much luck you will have on the second hand market. Each page is an article the Addy originally published from November 21 1989 though to November 20 1990. The articles are each a historical newspaper article from the same day in the past, but with some modern context added. So if you dug though the 1989-1990 archives you can read them - at least it is quicker than checking every issue every published! Wongm (talk) 12:48, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Global account

Hi, I have another question: I have this account in the English wikipedia, and I also opened another one in the French one. Now, I've learned about global accounts, so I'd like to make a new French one with the same name as this, in order to merge them. This would imply having two accounts in the French wikipedia: is that OK as long as I don't use one of them?, can I close the first one? or once one has an account, they can't open a new one?Randomlychaotic (talk) 08:49, 20 August 2008 (UTC) OK, thanksRandomlychaotic (talk) 09:26, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

I have nominated Manu Sharma, an article you created, for deletion. I do not feel that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Manu Sharma. In response to your instructions

If you will notice, after I added the previous "nonsense" to the 2012 page, I promptly deleted it. I do not wish to start an argument. I simply wish to state that I am aware it is unnecessary, which is precisely why I immediately deleted it. Thank you. Good day. Emptyandgray (talk) 06:45, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Point Cook

Hi I was trying to put in a neutral post about the problem with Point Cook broadband and it was vandelised by DSmart and then you seem to have intervened to remove the whole entry. Some how you seem to have let the vandel win. (sorry about the wrong spot). We also suspect the same user vandelised the petition itself (see all the deleted entries..I had to delete them due to the vandelism).

I would like to add something into Point Cook about the current state of Broadband. Upto 50% of new residents in new estates cannot get even adsl1 due to the infrastruture (see the original edit). We have three community papers writing articles about it. DSmart continues to vandalise the petition with rubbish and if you check the history of the point cook page he was the vandal in the page.

Thanks for your consideration —Preceding unsigned comment added by 118.208.149.222 (talk) 07:02, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Help

many thanks for your message. I need a lot of help. For instance, I tried to put a end-note after what I edited under Grande Loge de France but was unable to do so (I tried to set the reference to a paper 'Les principales obédiences françaises – Quelques dates' I wrote which is on the website http://www.freemasons-freemasonry.com/bernheimfr.html).

I will greatly appreciate your help.

If I may speak frankly, I happened to read right now the 'discussion' which happened last March about deleting my entry or not. Was somewhat surprized at reading Comment... I would agree, if we can get verification that he actually won these awards. Blueboar (talk) 15:58, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi Longhair. I see Dante Arthurs is up for deletion. Do you want to check the image on that one? I see you uploaded it in 2006. Seems to have a generated message that says "this tag is not a sufficient claim of fair use". Thought you might want to look into that. The image certainly adds to the quality of the article. Bankstown Portal

Hello Longhair. I am just wondering, are you still going to delete this portal, would I be wasting my time by doing any more work to the portal? Cheers Adam (talk) 21:36, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi and thanks for the answer. What I might try to do is work on the portal atleast once a month, this should keep the information fresh and hopefully this should be enough not to have it deleted. The thing is being in Bankstown the informatiom will be limited so I think the best thing to do would be to keep rotating the articles. Another thing, one of the admins, Stephen, went ahead and removed every portal link from every single article that the portal was linked to. He even moved the link from the Bankstown article and the City of Bankstown article, and while he was doing this he found other bits of my work and started deleting this as well. I think this was a bit unfair to actually remove every link from every single article. Even when I put a link in the City of Bankstown Topics template he removed that as well. Its as if he does not want anyone at all to see the portal. I have a feeling that it may have something to do with an incident I had with him last year when he had me block for being rude. Now it looks as though he is doing this to try and make me loose my temper so I do something stupid and get blocked for something like personal attacks or edit waring. I now it was probably a bit excessive for me to put the link into every article but I think it is only fair that it should atleast be in all the city of Bankstown suburbs, just like the the suburban template for the LGA. Also on the Aust Wikipedians notice board he said that this was a taunt. So this goes to show that he is doing this to annoy. I will later on put some of these links back into some articles. If this user stephen continues to stalk my edits I will have to make a complaint somewhere. Any thank for you reply. Cheers Adam (talk) 22:06, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Ashendene Boys Home

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Ashendene Boys Home, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Disputed non-free use rationale for Image:YouCantStopTheMurders.jpg

Thank you for uploading Image:YouCantStopTheMurders.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 16:51, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

Deletion

Hi, my userpage has been notified as being considered for deletion, but the deletion entry and page discussion where it links don't exist. Besides, the reason for its deletion is not stated? In the Miscellany for deletion, it says that the page should be listed, so what should I do? Thanks in advance.Randomlychaotic (talk) 17:00, 15 September 2008 (UTC) I hadn't noticed that it doesn't appear in the history, but I saved the page, so I have the copy with the notice. Hi there. I'm not an admin, I just noted that the page protection had been updated. Orphaned non-free media (Image:Howling III.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Howling III.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:05, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Legend of Motorsport (band)

Hi. As regards the page Legends of Motorsport (band): gimme a friggin break! I had user Stifle put it back up, was waiting for it to appear whilst I collated my Rolling Stones and various other media sources to indicate to you pedants our "importance", and you come along and delete the bastard before I've had a chance to fix it up. Please reinstate the page so that I may reinforce the notability of Legends for all you philistines who don't think one of the biggest independant rock bands in Australia deserves a mention in your precious tome. I read the userpage. Who they are doesn't give the editor any right introduce trivial nonsense to the article on Ritchie. The user was given fair warning via multiple messages to their userpage, which they also chose to ignore. They've only been blocked for 24 hours, not indefinitely, so they've got an opportunity to realise why they were blocked and to discuss rather than edit war in future. Pokemon redirect

I did not close the AfD, however, unless there is some reason not to enforce the ended AfD, then I would certainly push the matter. If you're telling me that there is a lack of consensus, then there are appropriate avenues to approach this, as opposed to giving me a hard time. --Mhking (talk) 01:41, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

So help me understand; if there is only one or two voices in an AfD, then it is not considered valid? How many voices makes it valid? Does that mean that if there are only one or two voices raised in opposition then the article should not be removed or redirected? If that is the case, then why do articles with only one or two voices get removed regularly? What makes this situation different? --Mhking (talk) 01:46, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

BrianBeahr

Can you please help me out here. A while back I implemented an infobox to put in VFL season articles, outlining the major team and individual award winners etc. I put them into the articles 1897 to 1950 but no further. BrianBeahr, likes he's done with several other pages (duplication), has decided to make another infobox template. I have told him that a perfectly good version already exists but got no response. He has now replaced the infoboxes in the articles 1897 to 1950. He's been deleting his talk page messages but he recently, in a rare response, said that his infobox is more detailed. By comparing my version to his you can see that it clearly isn't the case. I suggested that any changes he want to make to the infobox, such as adding teams next to the player's name, can be done to the original infobox and a new one isn't required. He didn't respond and instead deleted my comment.

If you don't have the time to deal with this issue I understand, but could you please direct me to somewhere else I can raise this? Cheers. Crickettragic (talk) 00:42, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

Last night I wrote a message on his talk page outlining the problems with his version of the St Kilda Football Club article (which he has since deleted). Each time I or another editor tries to tidy up the page he just keeps reverting back to his version of the article. I understand that he is acting in good faith but he is showing no signs that he is filling to discuss any of his edits so the options are limited. It may not qualify as vandalism but it is still disruptive to wikipedia. As someone on Talk:St Kilda Football Club put rather well, the article looks like a 'dog's breakfast'. Crickettragic (talk) 01:03, 12 October 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. I appreciate that you've taken the time to investigate this. Crickettragic (talk) 01:08, 12 October 2008 (UTC)
I'm working on it as we speak. I am replacing the infobox with the original. I've also edited the original infobox as you suggested, to take into account any positive changes that the one proposed for deletion had. Crickettragic (talk) 01:51, 12 October 2008 (UTC)
On second thought I've withdrawn my nomination. I'll wait until it is no longer in use. Crickettragic (talk) 01:57, 12 October 2008 (UTC)
Cheers. I notice he tried to do you for 3RR lol. Speaking of which, are you able to revert the St Kilda Football Club article back again? It's currently at BrianBeahr's version and I've already undid his revision twice in the last 24 hours. Crickettragic (talk) 08:44, 12 October 2008 (UTC)
As expected, it looks like our friend doesn't want to play ball. With his ban ended he goes straight back to reverting the St Kilda article back to his version. Jevansen (formerly Crickettragic) (talk) 11:42, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for taking care of that AfD. I have a question. Something I read, when researching that article, made me believe that it had already been speedy deleted earlier. Emmalina

Would you be prepared to work cooperatively to improve the Emmalina article or put the verifiable information somewhere? I think there is notability in being a demonstration of the early concerns of Youtube security (she was also a well-viewed meme in the early days of Youtube, even if she isn't now). There is some notability there, even if it doesn't deserve a separate article, it should go somewhere. Any sugestions? (Reply here). JRG (talk) 07:49, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

I think she deserves a line or two within the YouTube article, if that. Although she of her own free will decided to launch her life into her own brand of internet stardom, most of her viewers have likely moved onto the next big thing. We shouldn't prolong her public persona if she no longer wants it. Her 15 minutes are over. -- Longhair\talk 07:56, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
Thanks a lot - not. Completely uncooperative. I don't know why I bother sometimes. JRG (talk) 07:57, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
You got an answer. No need to get all huffy because it wasn't the answer you wanted. -- Longhair\talk 07:59, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
No - I didn't get an answer. I got an uncooperative person who has no intention of working with users who are trying in good faith to improve articles. I thought Wikipedia was supposed to be about improving the encyclopedia, but time and time again I see deletion debates dominated by people who couldn't be bothered doing that, are too motivated by their own self-opinion on how not notable an article is and would never help another user find the best way to proceed with an article. I thought you might be an exception to that. Apparently not. JRG (talk) 08:30, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
I'm not going to work on the article, or try to squeeze the article in anywhere, because IMHO, there should be no article. She's a young girl who has tried to reduce any harm to herself, and we should be doing everything, as reasonable people, by helping her do that. She want's her article gone, and I tend to see that as a positive effect. You came here looking for an answer, and you got one. I'm sorry, I disagree with your goals here. Like I said above, her time has been and gone. Let her be. -- Longhair\talk 08:39, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

question why

For school we were exercising how to write objective articles. I wanted to try this out on Wikipedia as well. I wrote a piece about the products of a company where I visited once through school. Now they deleted this because it was seen as an advertisement?! I still do not know which sentences were seen as an advertisement and why.. the page name is/was Dutchclamp. (that is their product name) I took the pages of kleenex, mcdonald and swifts as an example but still it was considered as an advertisement! anyone? —Preceding unsigned comment added by JacquelineRoig (talkcontribs) 08:07, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Kenparkcover.jpg.

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Delvene delaney mood for all seasons album cover.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Closedmouth (talk) 11:52, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

My 10,000th edit

Longhair,

This is my 10,000th edit on wikipedia. Several years ago you welcomed me to wikipedia - [3]. Thank you for the welcome! Yes, I have enjoyed my stay. I remember how surprised I was that someone had reacted to what I felt was a fairly trivial contribution to the encyclopedia. I realised that there was a community behind the project space, and I started to learn about wikipedia using your template as a starting point. I then embarked on the next 9,998 edits. So, with the 10,000th one, I'd like to pay homage to where it all started.

Help me please

i though i was being clever, but even though i've been using wikipedia for years it has now become obvious that i'm not quite as clever as i thought.

I'm trying to have the page that was current listed as "Communist Party of Australia" renamed to "Communist Party of Australia (defunct)" and the page that is currently called "Communist Party of Australia (revived)" to just "Communist Party of Australia". (There is, and never has been, a party with the word "revived" at the end).

I am trying to do this as any looking for that Party name would be looking for the second party, which is the only party currently existing by that name. (The other became defunct 20 years ago).

I tried to use the method as set out in the guide:

Move A to C Delete A Move B to A Delete B Move A to B Delete C.

I could get this to work and now I've screwed it up big time. The move from A to C is visible but for some reason I can't get B to move onto A's name.

Can you refer my question to someone who can sort this out for me?

Many, many, many thanks

Hi. While reviewing a list of broken portals, I saw where you had deleted Portal:City of Bankstown under G7. When you did so, you left a number of subpages of the portal. Normally, when a portal is deleted, its subpages are also deleted. You can use Special:PrefixIndex/Portal:City_of_Bankstown to find the orphaned pages. But if you would, could you elaborate on the reason for deletion? Normally, content that has been around for a long period of time is not deleted under G7. I looked at it and couldn't find any obvious reason for its deletion and it looks like a very nice portal. Is there something I'm not aware of (ie, use of copyvio material, etc) Thanks. --B (talk) 01:58, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

  • I actually requested the deletion as the author of the portal. Reason being is that I would not be updating it all that often. The administrator made it clear to me that if I or anyone else did not update on a regular basis he/she would delete it. So I thought it would be best if I request deletion. I don't mind if it is brought back because I would make the occasional change every once and a blue moon. Cheers. Adam (talk) 02:08, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
    • Plenty of our portals are not updated - they just use randomly rotated content. I can easily set it up if it isn't already set to be that way. --B (talk) 02:13, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
      • Actually that sounds like a pretty good idea. I don't think it is set up quite like this. I know that you are allowed to have 5 or so selected pictures, bios and articles that rotate but most of the other stuff just stays the same. It would be good if you could have the whole lot change automatically each day or once a week and rotate between five or so different templates or even more if possible. Adam (talk) 05:52, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
        • Ok, I'm going to restore it and then take a look at what's there. I think we have a mod function, so I could actually just set the 5 pages to rotate weekly. --B (talk) 14:47, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

Oops...

I thought he'd had a few more warnings than he did. I'll fix it. If he acts up again, he'll get clobbered for good. Thanks for letting me know. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 23:58, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Category:Non-article Australia pages, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Category:Non-article Australia pages has been empty for at least four days, and its only content has been links to parent categories. (CSD C1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Category:Non-article Australia pages, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. To see the user who deleted the page, click here CSDWarnBot (talk) 02:12, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

It really makes you wonder when you see messages like that - it makes hellers catch 22 pale into insignificance - good to see your moniker on my watch list agin - trust the new year isnt biting in anyways cheers SatuSuro 02:16, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of File:Fakemuslimleslie.jpg

A tag has been placed on File:Fakemuslimleslie.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a non-free image with a clearly invalid licensing tag; or it otherwise fails some part of the non-free content criteria.

If you can find a valid tag that expresses why the image can be used under the fair use guidelines, please replace the current tag with that tag. If no such tag exists, please add the {{non-free fair use in|article name that the image is used in}} tag, along with a brief explanation of why this constitutes fair use of the image. If the image has been deleted, you can re-upload it, but please ensure you place the correct tag on it.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:File:Fakemuslimleslie.jpg|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. ~ JohnnyMrNinja 08:19, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

Cleanup tagging for stubs

Hi. I've seen you place cleanup tags on quite a few articles, stubs included. I understand that it's generally agreed that since stub articles need work in probably every aspect, they shouldn't need tagging with specific cleanup tags (since a stub tag is like cleanup-everything in itself), and those tags should be reserved for developed or partly-developed articles instead. If an article is long enough to allow one to see specific issues in need of addressing, that's probably a sign that the article is no longer a stub. Perhaps you'll consider removing the stub templates when tagging such articles? --Paul_012 (talk) 13:59, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

I'm not sure if you saw my message, but if so, it appears from your recent edits that you seem to disagree with the above. I'm wondering if you have any specific comments regarding the issue? --Paul_012 (talk) 11:47, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
It's not the I disagree. I just don't care enough to comment, but I will anyway. Stubs are a useless tag anyway IMHO. Almost every article has an edit button, and if a stub is short, it's bleedingly obvious to anyone it may require expansion. -- Longhair\talk 01:07, 6 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi. I noticed your block of User talk:BotofDooom, and I just wanted to assure that you knew WP:U only prohibits usernames that use "bot" as a suffix. Thanks for the block. I was wondering about your rationale for choosing that length of block time: examining the user's contributions shows that (s)he disappears for weeks and months at a time, but regularly returns to vandalize. In the scope of those time frames, what is 31 hours to do? Thanks (and i'll be watching this page for thread consolidation.) Quaeler (talk) 12:26, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

I notice that this category you created is unpopulated (empty). In other words, no Wikipedia pages belong to it. If it remains unpopulated for four days, it may be deleted, without discussion, in accordance with Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#C1. I'm notifying you in case you wish to (re-)populate it by adding [[Category:Old requests for Australia peer review]] to articles/categories that belong in it.

I blanked the category page. This will not, in itself, cause the category to be deleted. It serves to document (in the page history) that the category was empty at the time of blanking and also to alert other watchers that the category is in jeopardy. You are welcome to revert the blanking if you wish. However, doing so will not prevent deletion if the category remains empty.

If you created the category in error, or it is no longer needed, you can speed up the deletion process by tagging it with {{db-author}}.

Indeed good point and there is the nub of the issues that are so many enthusiasts for current info - and as you say to have certain reminders is not a good idea - good advice - and thank you. SatuSuro 01:10, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

The media scramble for blame is a bit scary - digging up old foresters with chips on their shoulders and getting their greenie bashing as credible public info is not what i would call imaginative reporting. The royal commision will be the interesting part (of course here in wa our proscribed burning gets lots of airplay at the mo) SatuSuro 01:16, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

When I used to work in the oil exploration data processing industry in what feels like a parallel universe deep in the last century - in our sector of the office - we used to have a blame card - not for any real errors but it went from desk to desk just to remind each other how the others outside of our office partition would no doubt find some excuse - oh well no doubt the shock jocks will get their knickers in very convoluted knots and the voices go up a register or three on this situation - oops i gotta get off- chat some other time SatuSuro 01:29, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

Bot flag

How do I go about getting a bot flag for User:Anybot? Thanks, Martin (Smith609 – Talk) 02:32, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

Well, I assumed that approval to run meant that it was okay to run it... in any case, I've requested a flag and will hold fire on the editing until it arrives. The recent changes log is yours to patrol again! (-; Martin (Smith609 – Talk) 02:41, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

assessment working group

Did you see that spam on WT:AUS about a "coordinators' working group"? The spam gave the distinct impression that this would be an exclusive club for people who run WikiProjects. A lot of people kicked up a big stink about that, and it is being rescoped as we speak. At present it looks like being an open working group on article assessment.

I thought I should mention it to you, because if you were uncomfortable with, or uninterested in, declaring yourself our "coordinator", that obstacle to your participation has now been removed.

Proposed deletion of Injured Engine

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Injured Engine, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

Old computer game. No suggestion of fame, milestone, or even best-selling status, nor any sources attesting to anything at all.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Bullocky, help please

I have noted that you started the above article and I'm seeking your advice concerning the following comment by SW. Bullocky, drover and teamster do not have their own articles in "World Book" and bullockwhacker is only briefly mentioned in another article. A drover does not have anything to do with teams. I feel that they should be kept separate.

"It's not okay for articles to be based only on one dialect or country when the subject is applicable to many countries and terms in English. What you call a bullocky in Australia is the same as drivers, teamsters and drovers in the U.S., Canada and other countries. Since drover means something different in Australia, and bullocky is unknown outside your country, I propose we merge Bullocky and Teamster together in to one article in the interest of staying global, with the title of Teamster. What do you think? Steven Walling (talk) 02:35, 12 April 2009 (UTC)" Comments please? Cgoodwin (talk) 03:45, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for File:Max_Green.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Max_Green.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Someone Else's Daughter. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Someone Else's Daughter. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:09, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Lloyd Crosbie

The article Lloyd Crosbie has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Only claim to notability is the fact that this person committed tow murders, which is (unfortunately) all too common. The only link to a newspaper article is dead, the only remaining reference is to a primary source (the court decision). Hence, Crosbie does not meet WP:N.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Crusio (talk) 16:00, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

GANGgajang

Have noticed that an editor, User:Nouse4aname, has recently moved GANGgajang to Ganggajang, when I attempted to revert the move the user cited 'Correct capitalisation as per WP:MOSTM and WP:NC'. I've checked WP:NC and it would appear that based on the overarching objectives, using the most easily recognized name; using the mane most prevalent in reliable sources; and using the name most readers are likely to search by that the article should be GANGgajang not Ganggajang. I've also had a look at WP:NC (common names) which would seem to support my view - anyhow I was hoping that some people who are older and wiser than me might be able to give some clear directions on the correct name for this article. An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Chris Parnell (Australian). We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Chris Parnell (Australian).

--Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:08, 10 November 2009 (UTC)

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Orphaned non-free image File:MRSTINKYEdwards.jpg

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:MRSTINKYEdwards.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Unreferenced BLPs

Hello Longhair! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 16 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. File source and copyright licensing problem with File:Welcome stranger.jpg

File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Welcome stranger.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, we also need to know the terms of the license that the copyright holder has published the file under, usually done by adding a licensing tag. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged files may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the file will be deleted 48 hours after 14:48, 5 May 2010 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 14:48, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

File copyright problem with File:MelbourneShowgrounds.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:MelbourneShowgrounds.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 12:28, 16 October 2010 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Pauldenyer.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Pauldenyer.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone.

Thank you. SchuminWeb (Talk) 04:13, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

Why was the GDATA Software page deleted?

GDATA is one of the most prominent names in the anti-malware world. They are reviewed by every major independent antivirus testing organization including av comparatives, Virus Bulletin, west coast labs, ICSA, etc. And they have the highest detection rate over the last several years according to several of those labs. They also have a significant install base.

If you can justify deleting GDATA, then you might as well delete at least half a dozen other anti-malware vendors. All of whom are less significant than GDATA in almost all respects. Deleting GDATA screams of ignorance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cabville (talkcontribs) 11:42, 31 December 2010 (UTC)

Planning to recreate G Data Software page

I am planning to recreate the G Data page as information about the antivirus software is very notable. They have won multiple awards, are one of the oldest computing security companies and have been comparably tested against much of the software on the List_of_antivirus_software. I will be putting the draft on my user page User:Emedlin1/G_Data and then moving to main. Please comment so I won't waste time trying to publish an article that will be deleted. Inconsistency of Policy Enactment: Conflict of Interest, Spam, and Restrcited Sites.

Hi Longhair,

Thanks for the link to the "conflict of interest" policy. I have taken that into consideration. If you believe there is a problem with my site as linked to I would be happy to discuss this, as I believe that it shares many, if not all, of the values of Wikipedia.

Previous users removed my community site link as they classified it as spam or a "restricted membership" site, neither of which it is. Meanwhile, many links to purely commercial sites remain, such as Luna Park, St Kilda Marina, Linden Art Gallery, and other community sites such as WilliamstownOnline.net (on the Williamstown, Vic page). The "policy" regarding External Links does not seem to be enacted with any consistency. If a link to my free community site is considered to have breached Wikipedia policy, then these sites have surely breached it in the extreme!

If the Wikipedia community has some method of reaching a consensus on this point I will be happy to abide by it.

But until this consensus occurs, or until the "spam", "membership sites", and "conflict of interest" policies can be enacted with any consistency, may my links to my bone fide and very relevant free community sites be allowed to remain?

I look forward to your reply.

Regards,

Nic Mason - Developer of the free community sites of StKilda.com.au, Williamstown.com.au, Yarraville.com.au, SouthYarra.com.au, and ARTS.org.au. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Yarraville-com (talkcontribs) 05:12, 8 May 2011 (UTC)

I'm unsure why you have deleted xtranormal. It is a phenomenon in North America -- that famous Iphone 4 v. Android video was made with the software, and I wanted to learn more about it. Now it is gone. That doesn't seem right. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.3.242.71 (talk) 04:27, 29 October 2010 (UTC)

Hi. I'm the creator of the article Jorge Bechara. I knew an article with the same name was previously deleted but I couldn't access how it was and I don't know how it could breach copyright as I wrote the information myself based on material searched from books, print and online credible sources, as noted in the article reference section. I'd like to know what could be done for it to stay. Thank you. --Hiedler (talk) 03:51, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

Re-creating the article for the Rancid song "Nihilism"

Hi, I was going to make an article for the Rancid song "Nihilism", and I saw that it said you had deleted an article already made for it because of not enough information. And it said that I should ask you before re-creating it. So can I re-create the article? I might not have enough information about the song right now but I will find more as time goes on. So if the article doesn't have enough information (if) I first make the article, don't delete it quite yet. :) --Blaguymonkey (talk) 10:28, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

File source problem with File:BelmontCommonFlood1.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:BelmontCommonFlood1.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MSU Interview

Dear Longhair,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chlopeck (talkcontribs) 03:56, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
