DYK for Giovanni Prodi

On 7 February 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Giovanni Prodi, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Italian mathematician Giovanni Prodi was initially drafted into the National Republican Army and trained as a telephonist during World War II? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Giovanni Prodi. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Giovanni Prodi), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

User:SD0001/hide-reverted-edits

Hey, do you know if something like User:SD0001/hide-reverted-edits is possible or exists for watchlists? Would definitely come in handy for filtering out already-reverted items. ɱ (talk) 23:36, 24 January 2020 (UTC)

@: Sorry for the delay in replying. Somehow I never saw your message until now (when the messages below came in).
I guess you've turned on the watchlist feature that show you edits other than just the latest revision?
It's possible to write some similar javascript for watchlists, but it would be a bit more complicated. For people who see only the latest changes on the watchlist, on the other hand, it would be a very simple script to hide the reverts (the reverted edits won't be shown in the watchlist, of course, as those can't be the latest revision). New Page Reviewer newsletter February 2020

Hello SD0001,

Source Guide Discussion

The first NPP source guide discussion is now underway. It covers a wide range of sources in Ghana with the goal of providing more guidance to reviewers about sources they might see when reviewing pages. Hopefully, new page reviewers will join others interested in reliable sources and those with expertise in these sources to make the discussion a success.

Redirects

New to NPP? Looking to try something a little different? Consider patrolling some redirects. Redirects are relatively easy to review, can be found easily through the New Pages Feed. You can find more information about how to patrol redirects at WP:RPATROL.

Discussions and Resources
Refresher

Geographic regions, areas and places generally do not need general notability guideline type sourcing. When evaluating whether an article meets this notability guideline please also consider whether it might actually be a form of WP:SPAM for a development project (e.g. PR for a large luxury residential development) and not actually covered by the guideline.

note re your revert

thanks for your edit just now at User:Brianboulton/Sandbox17. good to have your input, and a fresh set of eyes to look over the technical details. your points re the article were very sensible, and your revert made sense. thanks. by the way, I see you have a lot of technical knowledge. let's remain in touch. I can probably use your technical knowledge on a few things I may be working on, sometime in the near future. thanks!! --Sm8900 (talk) 16:31, 14 February 2020 (UTC)

I have removed the {{proposed deletion/dated}} tag from Anne Ingram, which you proposed for deletion. I'm leaving this message here to notify you about it. If you still think this article should be deleted, please do not add {{proposed deletion}} back to the page. Instead, feel free to list it at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. Thanks! JaneciaTaylor (talk) 22:13, 13 February 2020 (UTC)

@JaneciaTaylor: Thanks for the note. While it isn't required, it'd be useful if you could give a reason for de-prodding. Also, why did you remove the {{primary sources}} tag from the article, when it was being sourced entirely by primary sources? As it stands, this has been restored to a redirect by another editor. SD0001 (talk) 17:14, 14 February 2020 (UTC)

While I'm here...

Is the refund helper supposed to make a token edit to an undeleted G13 draft which didn't have a speedy deletion tag on it?

If yes, it's not always working: Draft:PitBull Trusted Computing Platform was refunded using the helper at 16:19 on 10 February 2020. However, there was no token edit to keep it alive (history). I noticed as it was nominated for deletion again at 19:25 on 10 February 2020‎ and I was patrolling CSD noms :). Even if the nominator had checked the history [which we'll assume they did] they wouldn't have known about the refund unless they also checked the page logs [which presumably they didn't].

If no, it doesn't make a token edit, I wonder if it should. Besides editors not checking deletion logs (understandly imho; admins, less so), there is the question of whether the bot which writes this list takes account of recent undeletions. I rather suspect it does not. Therefore, a token edit ought to prevent the draft from re-appearing on the Stale Drafts list for another 6 months and also discourage invalid G13 noms. Without a token edit, I presume the draft would re-appear on the list again the next day and an admin who isn't paying close attention might delete it. (This still happens on occasion). --kingboyk (talk) 13:01, 14 February 2020 (UTC)

The script presently doesn't do any such token edits. This has been brought up before, see WT:RFUD#New_script_for_easily_processing_requests. I thought the issue had been mitigated by having HasteurBot running again, but it still looks like a few editors are busying themselves with pointless G13 tagging, rather than leave it to the bot :( That being said, I don't know if the bot checks the undeletion log.
I don't think it's a good idea to code the script to add a random space somewhere. A more systematic way would probably be make it add something like {{AfC postpone G13}}, as DESiegel mentioned over there.
Looking at the code of MusikBot which generates the stale drafts report, it doesn't seem to check the undeletion log. Maybe MusikAnimal would want to rectify that. SD0001 (talk) 17:57, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
That seems sensible. Perhaps we could simply add a column in the table that indicates whether the draft was previously deleted, and link to the log. This would keep humans informed and let them make the judgement call. How does that sound? Or should it refrain from listing any page that was recently restored (say the past 6 months)? MusikAnimal talk 18:39, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
@MusikAnimal: I think the perfect-world logic would be: if (and only if) the article has not been edited by a non-bot account in 6 months AND it has not been undeleted in the last 6 months AND it is not a pending submission, it appears on the Stale Drafts list. I'm not sure the extra column would be necessary if the bot took account of the deletion log when deciding whether to list or not, but I defer to your expertise on that. --kingboyk (talk) 19:01, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
SD0001: {{AfC postpone G13}} might work but... meh, refund isn't quite the same as postponing, so I'm not totally sold. If MusikAnimal were to modify his bot that might largely remove the issue and I'd be happy to leave it there. --kingboyk (talk) 19:22, 14 February 2020 (UTC)

The Half Barnstar
For the excellent User:Headbomb/unreliable. Harrias talk 19:16, 19 February 2020 (UTC)

BTW, because you moved this from a .js to a .json, you'll have to either ask someone to update the content model of the page, or just create User:SD0001/unreliable2.json or something so that the page is set to be recognized as a JSON file. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 23:38, 24 February 2020 (UTC)

Actually, I intentionally created it with JS content model because I don't really like MediaWiki's JSON viewer. Since JSON syntax is a subset of JS syntax, the content model here doesn't really matter. The contents can still be retrieved as JSON from a script by using "&action=raw&ctype=text/json" in the URL query string. SD0001 (talk) 04:26, 25 February 2020 (UTC)

Thank you for Special:Diff/945105676. I've been just in the middle of implementing exactly the same feature, I even used the same wording "edit request to <pages>". —andrybak (talk) 21:13, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

After a tiny fixup, Module talk:Protected edit request/testcases looks good to me. Would it be helpful if this list consisted of wikilinks to the pages? —andrybak (talk) 21:18, 11 March 2020 (UTC)
@Andrybak: What an amazing coincidence! I am in the process of making one improvement - the text should not display if there is just one page in the request which is the same as the subject page - after which I'll open an editreq. SD0001 (talk) 21:18, 11 March 2020 (UTC)
SD0001, regarding your last edit summary, the page section Title objects in MediaWiki Lua reference manual has a comprehensive list of properties. You're probably need getCurrentTitle().fullText. You can check it by pasting the following into the Debug console: mw.log(mw.title.getCurrentTitle().fullText == 'Module:Protected edit request/sandbox'). —andrybak (talk) 21:32, 11 March 2020 (UTC)
@Andrybak: Thanks! I have already fixed this. And oops, I didn't see your second message above due to edit conflict. Sorry if I inadvertently overwrote some of your changes on the sandbox. As far as passing args is concerned, its better to pass everything to the constructor and make them property of the class, per the object-oriented paradigm. SD0001 (talk) 21:37, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

RFUD helper - CSD F5

Hi. I was thinking it might be helpful if we had an accept and undelete option for files deleted under CSD F5 (orphaned fair use), several of which have come up recently e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Requests_for_undeletion&oldid=940626709#File:Kurt_Tanzer.jpg

The process would be:

  • Undelete the file and talk page
  • Add to the file page a deferred speedy deletion template so that the image will be deleted again if it remains orphaned: {{di-orphaned fair use|date=TODAYSDATE|help=off}} (replacing TODAYSDATE with, well, today's date :))
  • Mark the request as done at WP:REFUND, with some text explaining that the image needs to be added to an, and a rationale added to and the speedy deletion template removed from the file, within 7 days to prevent the image from being deleted again (probably as {{UND:f5}})

Is this doable and if yes what are your thoughts? --kingboyk (talk) 18:10, 13 February 2020 (UTC)

I think this is a nice idea! All that needs to be done is swap the date with today's date, right? Everything else is already happening. When the reason template is set to UND|f5 (or whatever it'd be called) I can have an additional checkbox appear that facilitates updating the date in the template rather than removing it. I will look into implementing it when I get time. SD0001 (talk) 21:32, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
That might indeed work in the vast majority of cases where the undeleted file description page still has a speedy deletion tag on it from last time. It's worth bearing in mind, though, that F5 allows immediate deletion under certain circumstances. At least some images deleted under F5 won't have speedy deletion tags on them as they were insta-deleted by admins (e.g. admin deletes spam page about company under G11, and the company logo under F5 without tagging or waiting 7 days as there's no need to delay it).
With regards to a checkbox, I infer that you are suggesting that there are two possible F5-undeletion accepts: 1) Where the image needs to be added back to the article within 7 days and thus needs to have a pending speedy-deletion tag on it until it has been added back to the article; 2) no speedy deletion tag needed because the image is already present as a red-link in an article (presumably because the article has just been restored, or the editor requesting the undeletion has jumped the gun) or the patrolling admin is going to add the image to the article themselves). If I understand you correctly, I concur. However, I wonder if that should be a different option rather than just a checkbox? (Just thinking aloud; you've done a great job with the UI so far so if you find time to implement this I trust your judgement). Also, in case 2) when the image is simply undeleted and no speedy deletion clock is reset, we'd probably want to post just subst:UND|d to WP:REFUND and not the new UND|f5, and - as you mentioned - any existing speedy deletion tag on the file description page should be removed. --kingboyk (talk) 12:43, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
this sounds like a great idea. glad to hear about these technical details receiving so much concerted attention. I appreciate all your efforts and attention and work on these details, for the community. thanks!! --Sm8900 (talk) 16:32, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
That's basically what I meant, yeah. But you raise some good points which make the implementation a bit complicated. I hope to look into it soon, when I have some free time. SD0001 (talk) 17:09, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
It's probably just my writing style which makes it seem complicated ;) I think it shouldn't be any harder than the sterling work you've done already. Thanks for your time and the replies. The script has been a God-send to those of us who work at WP:REFUND. --kingboyk (talk) 18:22, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
Done @Kingboyk: See WT:RFUD#RFUD-helper:_updates. While undeleting files, there'll now be a "Add {{di-orphaned fair use}}" checkbox - with a tooltip (question mark) next to it on which if you hover you're told "While restoring files deleted under CSD F5, tick this option unless the file has already been de-orphaned or you plan to do it after restoring it", and a new {{UND|f5deferred}} template response (it's text can be seen at Template:UND/doc - you can edit the template and tweak it if you wish). Tell if you want some changes to the interface messages. SD0001 (talk) 08:53, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
Thank you so much! I look forward to trying it out. --kingboyk (talk) 21:55, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
Appears to have worked a treat when I refunded File:Adolf Glunz.jpg. Thank you very much! Also I was very impressed to discover that when I refunded Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Sue Robins the script automatically moved the draft to draft space. Great work! --kingboyk (talk) 09:51, 25 March 2020 (UTC)

consider this a barnstar

I want to express my appreciation, and, I am sure, the appreciation of other active AfC reviewers for your magnificent work on developing User:SD0001/AfC sorting and its follow up version. It has proved helpful beyond any expectation in clearing up the backlog, and focussing attention of problem areas. I have been able to do at least twice the work formerly did in this area because of the increased selectivity; looking at the drafts from the March 10 version today, I see this is true of others experience as well. I was speaking with others involved with the undeclared paid editing problem today, and there was general agreement that the key factor would be the maintenance of high standards in submitted articles, which makes it impossible for at least the less competent such editors to remain in business; it gives hope that as we increase the standards, we will find fewer and fewer of them able to meet the requirements. The work at AfC is critical to this--there is nothing that works as well as a prompt rejection of a bad article. Many people have helped develop AfC, but you are not only the most recent, but possibly the one who will prove to have had the greatest effectiveness in keeping WP free from attempts to use it for advertising. DGG ( talk ) 02:47, 2 April 2020 (UTC)

@DGG: Thanks! But we really have to thanking the brilliant people (User:Halfak (WMF) and others) who developed the ORES service. All I've done is to query ORES for the topics of each draft and present that in a human-consumable form, which is no big deal!
By the way since you're here, do you think we should expose these topic predictions for declined drafts too? There are too many of them to be listed on a page, but it seems a waste for the information to be available but not actually used by us. Specifically, I was thinking that we could have a bot categorise them, say with Category:Drafts on Films or Category:Drafts on East Asia. It'd probably be wise to do this only for drafts declined from now onwards, so as to not disturb the G13 clock for already declined submissions. SD0001 (talk) 12:41, 2 April 2020 (UTC)
yes it would be useful, and divided into pages by subject is fine, but what would be the most useful is to list drafts declined 2 or more times, if it is feasible. They are the real problems. DGG ( talk ) 18:20, 2 April 2020 (UTC)
Cheers to both of you. I also really appreciate the work that you do. That's why I'm working on those parts of ORES that I hope will help you. It warms my heart and boost my spirits to know that at some point, we hit the mark and things are getting better. --Halfak (WMF) (talk) 20:31, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
Oh! Also, I've been working on better strategies for getting you lists of Draft namespace pages that are sorted by topic. Check out Phab:T249341 for some of the recent work I have been doing. If this works as expected, it'll be event easier for SD0001 to gather lists of articles by topic and for AfC to re-sort. I'm not sure when this will get done, so I wouldn't hold up progress. I just want you to know that there's more coming that I hope will help. --Halfak (WMF) (talk) 20:42, 3 April 2020 (UTC)

I left a suggestion there. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 09:24, 8 April 2020 (UTC)

Pages in green but still in draft?

I'm looking at sorting/STEM/Biology. The listing for Draft:Human Pluripotency Associated Transcripts is in green, indicating it's in mainspace, but it's still in draft. -- RoySmith (talk) 03:21, 18 April 2020 (UTC)

Hey hi, green only implies that the page is now a redirect. The cheap trick is applied using CSS at User:SD0001/AfC sorting/styles.css :) For AFC drafts, a redirect 90% of the time is usually to the mainspace. Of course it isn't possible to find the redirect target using CSS alone. SD0001 (talk) 03:37, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
SD0001, Makes sense, thanks. -- RoySmith (talk) 03:40, 18 April 2020 (UTC)

Weirdness

Hello SD. That page had shown up in the Category:Wikipedia pages with incorrect protection templates . The log I looked at is empty thus my edit which did remove the page from that category. Your edit has not put the page back in the cat (as I type this anyway) so I'm not sure what is going on. It might have something to do with some other page that is transcluded to that one. In all my years of working with that cat I haven't had this happen before. In any event thanks for your fix. Best regards and stay safe. MarnetteD|Talk 15:03, 21 April 2020 (UTC)

HI MarnetteD, the template says "Module:Message box is permanently protected from editing", i.e. the module is protected, not the talk page - so you should be looking at this log, which obviously isn't empty. If it is still populating the cat, well that shouldn't be happening. Best regards and stay safe. SD0001 (talk) 15:16, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation and the link. That helps :-) MarnetteD|Talk 15:19, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
Well rats the item showed back up in the cat. I've posted about it at the bottom of this thread User talk:Redrose64#One new one as Redrose64 is my go to editor in fixing these. I did ping you there but I want to add this note so that you will know that I don't think you did anything wrong. I'm just trying to get to the bottom of what is going on. Cheers. MarnetteD|Talk 20:40, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
At Module talk:Message box/testcases, a number of /testcases pages are transcluded. Most are fine; the problem one is {{mbox/testcases}}. Most of the content of that is OK too, apart from two lines:
{{Test case|_collapsible=yes|_showcode=yes|_title={{para|smalltext}} & {{para|small|left}}|demospace=main|text=some text|smalltext=some small text|small=left}}
{{Test case|_collapsible=yes|_showcode=yes|_title={{para|smalltext}} & {{para|small|no}}|demospace=main|text=some text|smalltext=some small text|small=no}}
These are what is causing the page to show up in that error category. Template:Test case says If no templates are specified explicitly, the module uses the base page of the current page as the first template, and its /sandbox subpage as the second template. Therefore, when used at Module talk:Message box/testcases, it's transcluding Module talk:Message box and Module talk:Message box/sandbox (the latter is a redirect to the former, so it's transcluding the same page twice, but that doesn't matter). In Module talk:Message box, there is, as MarnetteD noticed, a {{permprot}}, which on that page is testing the prot level of Module:Message box; but when transcluded to Module talk:Message box/testcases is testing the prot level of Module:Message box/testcases, which being a redlink, counts as unprotected. So an error is reported because as far as {{permprot}} is concerned, it's being used for an unprotected page. I don't know if {{Test case}} respects <noinclude>...</noinclude> - if it does, simply pop those around that {{permprot}}. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 22:15, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for this detailed explanation Redrose64. I added the noinclude as suggested and, after a few minutes, it did clear this from the category. Regards to you both. MarnetteD|Talk 22:33, 21 April 2020 (UTC)

Propose as gadget?

I think find-archived-section should become a gadget. It is so helpful that I even think it should be turned on by default, especially since there's no way for newbies to figure out how to search for archived discussions (as the search only works by using quotation marks).

Also thank you for T-watch! Absolutely vital for recent-changes patrolling.

Thjarkur (talk) 02:50, 22 November 2019 (UTC)

I recently had a chat with MusikAnimal about this. The issues pointed out have been fixed by now. I think it would be best to propose it as a non-default gadget at first, and later think of upgrading to default if there is wide usage. I see that Enterprisey and DannyS712 are also using this - any opinions? SD0001 (talk) 15:07, 23 November 2019 (UTC)
Ah, I was just stopping by to add another WikiLove template about that script! It's one of those scripts that seems absolutely indispensable once you install it. I would very strongly support proposing this as a gadget: I haven't had it fail on me ever, and I would happily add it to the gadgets list if the discussion has consensus for that. Idea: Archive names from the start

What if instead of

SomePageX, SomePageX/Archive_123 ...

SomePageX would redirect to SomePageX/Archive_124.

I.e., new discussions would take place on a page that already has an archive number: no more broken links! (At least for new discussions.) Jidanni (talk) 01:48, 26 April 2020 (UTC)

Hello,

I have a suggestion for RFUD-helper. When the text of the revision is undefined it might be worth not displaying the "Last deleted version" or showing some kind of error message. For example when the last deleted edit has been oversighted the text shows undefined as I am not an oversighter.

I had assumed that the new feature was a built in to mediawiki and so filled a bug report on phabricator. I think that deserves a trout Self-trout... Very useful feature and thanks for adding it (I've used it countless times since it was added).

Strange. I think this was due to the high database replag on toolforge and maybe also because of a jobqueue delay in changing the categorization status. That draft did disappear from the report the next day. SD0001 (talk) 15:23, 13 May 2020 (UTC)

NPPSORT

Hi - I recently became aware of WP:NPPSORT, so first of all, thank you' - it's brilliant. So much more pleasant to be able to review articles I might actually be interested in! However, I have a question - User:SDZeroBot/NPP sorting/Culture/Visual arts/Architecture currently says that it was last updated at 13:23 today, but in contains some entries that I reviewed yesterday, such as H. Nielsen's Tobacco Factory and Lantern Tower (La Rochelle, France) - is there a lag in articles being removed from the list after they're reviewed? Just wondering. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 15:01, 24 May 2020 (UTC)

@Girth Summit: Hi. The bot sources its list of unreviewed articles from the toolforge database replicas, and unfortunately according to https://replag.toolforge.org/, the present lag is a whooping 42 hours. It has been high for quite some time now. This isn't the usual, though (could it be linked to covid-19? who knows). Most of the time, the replag is measured in terms of seconds. Until it becomes normal, yeah, it can take upto 2 days for reviewed articles to disappear from the lists. SD0001 (talk) 18:55, 24 May 2020 (UTC)
SD0001, thanks. A two-day lag isn't a big problem - I was wondering whether it had stopped working altogether. Thanks again for your work on this - it's a great way to sort new pages :) GirthSummit (blether) 19:17, 24 May 2020 (UTC)
With no fewer than five slices out of eight having a replag of 12+ hours, and one (s4) at 49 hours, there's something seriously wrong and "stopped working altogether" is not unlikely. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 19:34, 24 May 2020 (UTC)
@Redrose64 and Girth Summit: And just like magic, it has come down to near zero (7 seconds when I checked), yay! SD0001 (talk) 05:23, 25 May 2020 (UTC)

Articles for Creation: List of reviewers by subject notice

Hi SD0001, you are receiving this notice because you are listed as an active Articles for Creation reviewer.

Recently a list of reviewers by area of expertise was created. This notice is being sent out to alert you to the existence of that list, and to encourage you to add your name to it. If you or other reviewers come across articles in the queue where an acceptance/decline hinges on specialist knowledge, this list should serve to facilitate contact with a fellow reviewer.

To end on a positive note, the backlog has dropped below 1,500, so thanks for all of the hard work some of you have been putting into the AfC process!

Sent to all Articles for Creation reviewers as a one-time notice. To opt-out of all massmessage mailings, you may add Category:Wikipedians who opt out of message delivery to your user talk page. Regards, Sam-2727 (talk)

More NPPSORT

Hello SD, loving the sort lists of course. I wanted to ask you, do you think it might be a good idea to split some sublists deeper? In particular I would be very interested in splitting the STEM lists into the normal encyclopedic subjects and then the rest being "Biographies/Films/Books/Companies" because the latter are often a large but uninteresting part of the submissions. I can probably make a pull request for this if you agree this might be worth adding. – Thjarkur (talk) 22:42, 27 May 2020 (UTC)

@Þjarkur: Hi. So you're talking about splitting the STEM lists into sections like "STEM biographies", "STEM companies", "STEM media", ... ? If so, that sounds like a good idea. I think sections may be better than further sublists. It will be great if you can file a PR, though I suspect this will involve fairly messy code :) SD0001 (talk) 16:30, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
Yes, mostly because I suspect many people are like me and are more interested in reviewing stuff like Iatrogenic anemia rather than biographies. I'll see if I can get around to this in the coming weeks then. – Thjarkur (talk) 16:44, 28 May 2020 (UTC)

Even more NPPSORT

First, let me echo the positive comments in the two sections just above this: it is enormously helpful to be able to find the articles where I can make an informed assessment, so thanks very much for that. However, it seems that NPP sorting stopped updating a week ago? At least, User:SDZeroBot/NPP_sorting/STEM/Mathematics has not been updated since then. Any thoughts? Thanks, JBL (talk) 20:45, 9 June 2020 (UTC)

I infer from the fact that it's working again that you have fixed it -- thank you! --JBL (talk) 17:33, 10 June 2020 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer newsletter June 2020

Hello SD0001,

Your help can make a difference

NPP Sorting can be a great way to find pages needing new page patrolling that match your strengths and interests. Using ORES, it divides articles into topics such as Literature or Chemistry and on Geography. Take a look and see if you can find time to patrol a couple pages a day. With over 10,000 pages in the queue, the highest it's been since ACPERM, your help could really make a difference.

Google Adds New Languages to Google Translate

In late February, Google added 5 new languages to Google Translate: Kinyarwanda, Odia (Oriya), Tatar, Turkmen and Uyghur. This expands our ability to find and evaluate sources in those languages.

Discussions and Resources
  • A discussion on handling new article creation by paid editors is ongoing at the Village Pump.
  • Also at the Village Pump is a discussion about limiting participation at Articles for Deletion discussion.
  • A proposed new speedy deletion criteria for certain kinds of redirects ended with no consensus.
  • Also ending with no change was a proposal to change how we handle certain kinds of vector images.

SDZeroBot NPP Sorting curation?

I've looked around a bit trying to find where SMEs / editors can feed back incorrect topic mapping for new articles and have not found such a resource yet. I do very much appreciate the effort represented by User:SDZeroBot/NPP sorting; definitely going in the right direction. The first thing I looked at was the STEM/Biology bin, and the first item in the table is Marin Jurić Čivro (Croatian singer). This article should have probably been mapped to the Culture/Media/Music bin. Would be useful to have a structured way to feed back to SDZeroBot in some fashion. Thanks for letting me know if, in fact, there is already a way that I've not come across yet. --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 01:29, 29 June 2020 (UTC)

Ceyockey, hi, SDZeroBot fetches topic classifications from ORES. As of now, there isn't any structured way to report inaccuracies, though I think one is in development (mw:JADE). There definitely was a issue with the Biology bin at the time you posted this (too many unrelated articles), but that seems to have been fixed by now.
If you notice any pattern of inaccuracies (such as a lot of related articles being mis-classified), you can report them to the developers of ORES at the IRC channel #wikimedia-ai or by filing a bug on phab:. Pinging EpochFail in case he has anything to add. SD0001 (talk) 13:00, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
Hey SD0001 and Ceyockey! I really want there to be a good way to report these issues. mw:Jade is still far away from being able to support this pattern, but I do think it is the right direction to go. I think that people like SD0001 will be able to query both ORES and Jade to get the best labels in the future. Right now, we're close to running a pilot deployment with the "damage" detection models for doing counter-vandalism patrolling. I've highlighted the topic predictions as a next step, but the mw:Wikimedia Scoring Platform team is pretty under-staffed at the moment so I can't say when topic will become part of Jade. I'm sorry that is a frustrating answer, but your notes on where and how you would like to clean up and give feedback to ORES topic predictions is really helpful to us. Thank you for bringing it up. I'll make sure we reference your notes when we do start working on next steps for Jade. --EpochFail (talkcontribs) 15:48, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

Duplicate parameters

Hi SD0001! I fixed User:SDZeroBot/NPP sorting/Culture/Biography by removing the spurious half infoboxes from the ends of the summaries. Another option would be to wrap an unmatched "{{" in <nowiki>...</nowiki>, otherwise you might not be able to see part of the table since the backend software will match that with a "}}" from another entry. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 14:31, 19 July 2020 (UTC)

This was because there was a subsection in the first section on the page at that time, which the script isn't equipped to handle. Reminds me to change the section number parsing to use the href in the edit section link; which will solve the issue. SD0001 (talk) 11:16, 19 August 2020 (UTC)

DYK query

Hey, firstly, thank you for suggesting a DYK nomination for Cockfighting in India. However, I'd like to know some basics before venturing into it.

  1. Is there a requirement that the hook should actually appear as is in the article?
  2. Things to keep in mind if a hook cites a non-English source.
  3. As this is my first DYK, am I exempt from QPQ?

Thanks in advance. --Ab207 (talk) 10:18, 24 August 2020 (UTC)

@Ab207:
  1. No. The fact should be mentioned in the article but presentation/wording can be different.
  2. Shouldn't be a problem.
  3. Yes. QPQ becomes a requirement only when you've made 5+ DYK nominations.
Good work on the article so far! Since it now has an image, you could even propose the image for inclusion making it the lead hook.
There is a script available to make the filing process easier which you can use. SD0001 (talk) 11:31, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
Thank you so much! the script would be helpful, I shall make a nomination soon. -- Ab207 (talk) 13:40, 24 August 2020 (UTC)

Feedback

I really appreciate that the script comes very handily to the first-time DYK nominators. I'd would like to give minor feedback after using the tool. The script seems to be counting the characters of "(pictured)" when followed immediately by "?" without space. Apart from that, the functioning is pretty neat. Alternative buffaloes

Haven't yet heard back from my second email about the DYK image for dairy in India. I'll give it a few more days, but if I don't get a response I think we should suggest an alternative before giving up on the picture sport (after all this work, we deserve a photo!) I found a few other good candidates on Commons, whose licensing seems clearer—wanted to get your thoughts. Any stand out to you as especially good?

— Preceding unsigned comment added by AleatoryPonderings (talkcontribs)

@AleatoryPonderings: Looking at the 100px renderings, I think the 4th one or the 1st one (cropped) are great. – SD0001 (talk) 18:26, 6 September 2020 (UTC)

Agreed; those were my two favourites as well. I'll post those two for consideration at the DYK if I don't hear back on our first choice in a day or two. (Sorry I forgot my sig!) AleatoryPonderings (talk) 18:48, 6 September 2020 (UTC)
Well, it ultimately went up without the image due to licensing issues and problems with the alternative images. But it's finally done; sorry for holding it up with my quixotic quest to finally get a DYK with an image … AleatoryPonderings (talk) 20:10, 7 September 2020 (UTC)
@AleatoryPonderings: No worries. Even I'd have loved the image slot (looks like we've got the "quirky slot" instead) but turning this article to a GA would be a finer achievement than a mere DYK slot! – SD0001 (talk) 20:26, 7 September 2020 (UTC)
Haha, yes—a "quirky slot" is better than nothing. (One of my prouder recent wiki-achievements is getting Budlong Pickle Company in the quirky slot, also following an AfD.) And certainly—if we can get this to GA, which doesn't seem that far out of reach, that would definitely be a step up from a buffalo-accompanied hook :) AleatoryPonderings (talk) 20:30, 7 September 2020 (UTC)

You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Dairy in India), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Script for Show/Hide in Category

I would like to propose a script that would place a show/hide button on all category pages that show page size, words number . If pressed, the category page would be replaced by a single column listing that included each article's page size (with template & without template), words number (without template & bulleted list), and the text BN will appear in green next to the name of the article if it is also present in the Bengali Wikipedia. Otherwise it will appear in tomato color.

I have created examples of what such a page might look like in my sandbox at: User:Hirok Raja/Category-Boy Rehman --Rehman (talk) 03:22, 18 September 2020 (UTC)

Hello, SD0001,

Earlier today I tried to do a batch delete with Twinkle of a large number of stale drafts and, in the process, your user page and user talk page were deleted. I obviously wasn't successful. As such, it is highly recommended to do a basic web search on the draft subject and not delete the possibly good drafts on notable topics, least of all use batch deletion for G13s (but for topics like Korean literature, even a web search is unlikely to useful, but that's a different story a guess ...). – SD0001 (talk) 04:55, 29 September 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for understanding my mistake. But, after 6 months of complete inactivity, it's not typical to do a BEFORE search before deleting stale drafts. Before your bot, at 1 am, my time, Wikipedia:Database reports/Stale drafts would be posted and all of the stale drafts would be tagged by editors & deleted by an admin (not by me because I was asleep). This was the system for years.
Then, a couple of weeks ago, the database report started coming up empty each morning and we discovered editors were using your bot generated pages to tag G13s before they appeared on the database report. As long as your bot reports exist, I don't know how to dissuade editors not to make use of them and tagged expired stale drafts. I can promise not to be over eager but I'm not the only person who is involved with tagging old drafts. And there are a few admins patrolling CSD categories who will delete G13 pages as soon as they are tagged.
When I first started looking at stale drafts years ago, I would evaluate each one but these days, the NPP doesn't seem to be doing its job and I'm seeing many stale drafts that are completely blank or only have one sentence on them, they aren't even stub article quality. They should have been tagged for deletion when they were first created but maybe NPP has fewer editors these days because the empty drafts hung around for six months without getting a quick evaluation & tagging.
I think that if there are editors who want stale drafts to hang around longer than 6 months, they should work on changing policy & practice or use your helpful pages to review upcoming G13s which is now made easier because of your very useful reports. Liz Read! Talk! 05:34, 29 September 2020 (UTC)
Just as a comment, the matter of "the deleting admin should check to see if a G13 should be saved" has come up time and time again, and there has never been a consensus to add this to the policy. If a page is eligible for G13, it can be deleted as long as it meets the minimum requirement of no non-bot edits for 6 months. The general reason for this, from my recollection, is that it is an almost automatic REFUND when asked for, meaning that abandoned drafts can easily be "saved". I would argue that when looking at a page to see if it meets the time criteria, the deleting admin should also do a quick check to make sure there isn't anything obviously worth saving, but again that's not any sort of requirement. This isn't necessarily the time (or thread) to discuss this particular issue, but I thought it was at least a germane clarification on the above comments. RM helper script

Hello, Is it possible to have a script created that will help over at RM just like XFD closure, it should be able to relist, close, fix links , log the RM at the articles talk page and move the page if necessary. This would really help since we do things over there manually Megan☺️ Talk to the monster 15:54, 29 September 2020 (UTC)

User:Danski454 was working on such a script (User:Danski454/RMcloser.js, unfinished). I have wanted to write such a script myself, but they appear to have put a lot of work into it already. Besides, I have quite a lot of commitments at the moment, sorry. – SD0001 (talk) 19:32, 29 September 2020 (UTC)

RFUD-helper responded in wrong section

I used RFUD-helper to accept a REFUND request for Draft:Cottontail (film). It undeleted the right page, and the edit summary was right, but it put the response in the wrong section: Special:Diff/981401957. Any idea what happened here? Jackmcbarn (talk) 02:47, 2 October 2020 (UTC)

Jackmcbarn, it's because RFUD-helper uses a bad way of calculating the section number -- it scrapes the TOC. This works correctly only as long as no section on the page has a sub-section (this wasn't the case here). See line 791 It can be fixed by extracting the section number from the "edit" link instead. I'm fairly busy atm with other stuff so if you can fix it, I'd be happy to sync it. – SD0001 (talk) 08:26, 2 October 2020 (UTC)

A lot of the categorization cycles have been fixed and removed from the corresponding lists. However, some of the cycles weren't removed from the lists after they were fixed. It is also possible that some cycles were removed from the lists by mistake. SD0001, could you please regenerate subpages of User:SDZeroBot/Category cycles? —andrybak (talk) 04:27, 3 October 2020 (UTC)

Done great to see this is being useful! – SD0001 (talk) 04:03, 4 October 2020 (UTC)

Is there a reason you can't use the actual sandbox or your userspace? Adam9007 (talk) 15:47, 5 October 2020 (UTC)

CodeEditorAssist

Hi, remember this conversation we had about the code editor? Well, I figured it out! Turns out, you have to pass the editor's DOM element to ace.edit() in order to configure it. I've written this script that saves code editor settings to your global preferences and applies them every time you open the code editor. Check it out if you're interested. Nardog (talk) 11:06, 11 October 2020 (UTC)

@Nardog: Excellent, thanks a lot. This is really neat. My favourite preference is the live autocomplete.
You should consider integrating this into the codeeditor extension as it would be good to have default-on for all users. – SD0001 (talk) 12:14, 11 October 2020 (UTC)
Glad you like it! I'm afraid my skills aren't quite there yet, so feel free to take T261118. ;) Fun fact: The states of the default toggle buttons on the toolbar (invisibles and wrap) are saved as cookies, so the script forcibly turns them off before loading saved settings. Nardog (talk) 14:20, 11 October 2020 (UTC)
Nardog jquery.codeEditor.js is the file to edit I guess. And we may not need things like MutationObserver if directly making the changes in the extension. But I've tried to install a local mediawiki for testing twice in the past and was bowled over both times. – SD0001 (talk) 10:21, 12 October 2020 (UTC)
Yeah, writing the code probably wouldn't be difficult, the problem is testing it. I'm not good with servers. Nardog (talk) 14:50, 12 October 2020 (UTC)

Peer review bot

Hi SD0001, I was wondering if you were still interested in helping out peer review with your bot? In particular taking over the work of PeerReviewBot in auto closing reviews, and KadaneBot in sending peer reviews to volunteers. That alone would be very helpful! --Tom (LT) (talk) 05:46, 13 October 2020 (UTC)

@Tom (LT): Well I haven't had a ton of time lately. I'll take a look as and when I get some time. – SD0001 (talk) 05:48, 13 October 2020 (UTC)
No problem :). --Tom (LT) (talk) 05:49, 13 October 2020 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Deletion to Quality Award

Thank you! – SD0001 (talk) 15:30, 13 October 2020 (UTC)

Hi, SD0001,

Would it be possible for you to, once again, include the time of the last edit to each draft on this page like you have on User:SDZeroBot/G13 Watch? That would make it more useful for me. It looks like the last edit date was a part of the chart up to October 1st and then it was dropped. Without the date, I have to open each draft page history to find out when the last edit was and with hundreds of drafts, that is quite a chore. Maybe you could decrease the size of the draft excerpt if space is at a premium.

It would be interesting to know if I'm the only one making regular use of this page or whether it's being checked by editors working in AFC as well, to help you know which features are most helpful. Thanks again. Liz Read! Talk! 00:26, 8 October 2020 (UTC)

P.S. I posted on the SDZeroBot talk page but I don't know if you check that regularly. Liz Read! Talk! 00:28, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
I really don't know what to make of the fact, SD0001, that you don't respond to my talk page messages on your talk page or on the SDZeroBot talk page. I'm using the pages that your bot has created on a daily basis and I have questions and feedback but you seem uninterested in it. You seemed interested in improving the bot's pages when it started up in September...have you just lost interest?
I'm at a loss as you are clearly editing on Wikipedia and I don't think that I'm posting unreasonable comments. You could always say, "Nope, Liz, that can't be done" or "It's a feature I'm working on" rather than offering no response at all. Should I pose my concerns and questions at Wikipedia talk:Bots/Requests for approval instead?
By the way, you said User:SDZeroBot/G13 soon sorting was updating twice a week but it last updated on Oct. 4th so there seems to be a glitch there, too. As always, I appreciate the work your bot does...I just have some questions. Liz Read! Talk! 01:27, 12 October 2020 (UTC)
include the time of the last edit to each draft on this page should be done, now. Thanks for your patience! Was busy with some more stressful wiki activities and RL. Regarding the update frequencies, I have had to change them quite a few times due to upstream issues. You can find the up-to-date info at User:SDZeroBot#Reports which also shows the dates of last update that automatically become red if an update was missed. – SD0001 (talk) 18:12, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

Ah, bureaucracy

Apologies for the extra bureaucracy at your ongoing BRFA; as Primefac demonstrated, I most likely should've just approved for a trial. I should've noticed that your intention was to take entire categories of categories at once, and tag each member category as a setcat without manually inspecting it. Looks like the BRFA is otherwise going well, so at least I didn't hold it up too much. Enterprisey (talk!) 07:34, 26 October 2020 (UTC)

Hello, SD0001,

I just wanted to thank you for adding the Last Edit column to this report. The page has turned out to be an invaluable tool, both for those working in AfC and for those, like me, who clear out old drafts which are less than promising. Thanks! Liz Read! Talk! 23:16, 26 October 2020 (UTC)

Hello, SD0001,

Typically, SDZeroBot issues this report at 00:00 UTC each night but today, it just skipped it. No report. This has also happened occasionally with User:SDZeroBot/G13 soon. It typically is also issued around 00:00 UTC but sometimes, there is just no report for the day even though reports are issued even when there are no drafts listed.

I'm not sure if you are on Wikipedia much now but if you are, could you manually run the SDZeroBot G13 eligible report? Because we were missing a G13 soon list for the day, it should be pretty long list. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 00:21, 29 October 2020 (UTC)

@Liz: done. – SD0001 (talk) 12:52, 29 October 2020 (UTC)

DYK for Shankar's Weekly

On 2 November 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Shankar's Weekly, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Indian prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru launched Shankar's Weekly, even though its founder described the magazine as "fundamentally anti-establishment"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Shankar's Weekly. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Shankar's Weekly), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Another AFC-related report that could be useful

Hi SD0001, would there be a way to do a bot report of pending articles that have titles identical to titles on other Wikipedias, with links to those foreign-language Wikipedia pages? If an article exists on another Wikipedia, it's a good indication that the draft should be approved. Thanks, Calliopejen1 (talk) 18:19, 11 November 2020 (UTC)

Deferred to WP:BOTREQ#AFC_drafts_that_have_titles_identical_to_titles_on_other_Wikipedias. I don't know of a way to do this since wikidata is unlikely to be helpful for AFC drafts. Not sure if it's even possible. – SD0001 (talk) 06:37, 13 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello, SD0001,

User:SDZeroBot/G13 soon is usually issued at 00:02 UTC but for some reason, about once every 7-10 days, it doesn't get issued. It isn't issued later in the night, the bot just skips that report. That happened today. Could you run your bot and issue a report for Nov. 7, 2020 for drafts that expire Nov. 13th? That would be very helpful. Thank you so much. Liz Read! Talk! 00:29, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

@Liz: done. There was a spam-blacklisted link in one of those excerpts that was blocking the save. Should be handled now. – SD0001 (talk) 04:42, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
Oh, this has happened to me when I've tried to archive talk page comments from months ago and they contain a now black-listed link. Thanks for being so responsive to my message. Liz Read! Talk! 05:54, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
Hi, SD0001,
Once again we didn't get a daily User:SDZeroBot/G13 soon. Could you check on that when you get back on Wikipedia? Thanks so much! Liz Read! Talk! 00:21, 13 November 2020 (UTC)
@Liz: manually run. It was originally a random "Connection lost" error which seems to occur annoyingly often. – SD0001 (talk) 06:28, 13 November 2020 (UTC)
It looks like it was generated last night. Thanks! It really helps to be able to address G13s throughout the day & night rather than having a dump of 200+ all at once. But G13 eligible is still very useful as a daily backup report. Thank you for being so responsive to requests. Liz Read! Talk! 00:24, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
