International Space Station

Hi there DJ, I'm looking to pick your brain. I've constructed a plan for an A-class review in my sandbox, which involves contacting each editor who commented in the recent PRs, GANs and FACs, and asking them to comment in a new PR. I've put up a draft of the message I'll send to each editor and the wording of the PR request in my sandbox, and I'd be grateful if you'd have a look over them.

On a similar theme, I could do with a fresh set of eyes to look over the automated peer review page (here) for the article - it's stating a few errors which I THINK I've dealt with (with the obvious exception of the ToC), but I'm so institutionalised by the code for this article I'd like it if you could go over it and see if I've missed something or if the reviewer is throwing up issues which aren't there.

The reason I ask is because I'm having trouble seeing certain tools on a page's edit history and someone suggested that it might be custom CSS or JS pages. Javascript help

Hey DJ, I've recently begun making some changes to a personal copy of Remember the dot's ISO date format unifier script, and have run into an annoyance - please tell me there's some more compact way of writing something like this (and that it can be used in a variable declaration):

Your file renaming spree

I recently suggested a name for an the image File:P1010049.JPG, which I leared was for the Municipal Building in Champaign, Illinois. Upon your renaming of this file, the former name suddenly applied to that of a church in Berlin, Germany. Needless to say, I added the renamed image and got rid of the redirect. This incident has made me wonder how many other images share the same random, numeric, and cryptic names. In any case, keep up the good work. ----DanTD (talk) 14:45, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

Well, I'll tell you this; I vaguley remember that at some point I had attempted to upload File:Unionstation2.jpg into the commons, when I got a warning that there was already another file with the same name, and there is. The "move" dialogue suggests that if the target pages exist, but are empty, then the move will work.
Also, I have done other moves in the past on to redirect pages, and they have worked.
Are you able to tell me what was different about this situation that required you to delete the pages before the move would work?

The pages also can only have 1 edit in their history if I remember correctly. I think when you blanked the redirect, you made it impossible to move another page over it. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 14:52, 29 October 2009 (UTC)

Disabled mobile Wikipedia

The help desk regularly gets questions from users who say they have disabled a special mobile Wikipedia version and don't know how to get it back. The latest is at Wikipedia:Help desk#Mobile version. I don't have a mobile device for testing and don't know how that version works. Is there something to tell them regarding Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 66#Accidentally disabled mobile Wikipedia on iPod Touch or other solutions? Yes, that will solve it. I have also created Wikipedia:Enable mobile version. If we add the following code to MediaWiki:Common.js mobile code, then we will have a quicker way to re-enable the mobile version.

I'm not qualified to evaluate that code. I got the impression from different places like Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 66#Accidentally disabled mobile Wikipedia on iPod Touch and the lead of Wikipedia:Mobile access that it was difficult to reenable the functionality of the mobile version after permanently disabling it, but I'm unable to test it. The new code isn't borken. The protected template of Project:Route diagram template comprised of a series of modular templates which transclude the {{BS-overlap}}. We have already prepared the sandboxes for the related templates (unprotected) which are directly transcluded by the articles. But we can not move until the revision of the protected BS-overlap. Well I wanted to make a javascript that's a tab that will scroll down when pass the cursor over it. Basically it will create a insect page based on Family, Genus, and Species like an "easy start". When you click on Family, it will create the page your currently on with User:Bugboy52.40/sandbox1 (used <pre>), Genus: User:Bugboy52.40/sandbox2, Species: User:Bugboy52.40/sandbox4. HotCat status

Hi. Can tell me what the status is of HotCat, as a userspace-based script? Is an approved script on WP? Are there guidelines for its use? There are no 'approved' scripts. Basically, anything that is not approved will be removed. Having said that, HotCat is a gadget, and as such featured in the Preferences of users. That does say something about how well accepted it is within the community. And for HotCat and ANY other script the rule is: "... you take full responsibility for any action performed using [script]. Don't fuss about it. It's difficult to get this article featured. Probably one of the most difficult articles around (long, current, dynamic). I have long since concluded that it is almost impossible to get any substantial article to FA status unless you are an FA reviewer with 2 years experience yourself. If this one fails, I suggest you stop trying to get this article FA. Instead focus on bringing more space related articles to GA, and perhaps opening up a discussion on the Village Pump about FA standards. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 15:12, 29 December 2009 (UTC)

Extra musicsample

I am not sure what you were trying to do with {{Extra musicsample}}, but experimenting with the live version of the template is not a good idea. The width, etc., that you were changing was tested on various browsers and with {{Infobox song}} and {{Infobox single}}. Yes, it wasn't required. The width is set by the File syntax, as is the centering. The template probably predates when those options could simply be passed to the player. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 11:11, 30 December 2009 (UTC)

I restored your changes thinking that they improved things even though you said they weren't required. Then I noticed that the audio player was very wide, and displayed starting at the left-offset of the centered image before the player appears. I reverted to the old version, but that didn't change anything: the player is still very wide. (I thought that "Image" vs. "File" might influence the player choice.) Is there some way to fix this? I think the first issue is the width of the player, and if that can be solved then getting it properly centered or adjusting the layout some other way is the next issue. The width of the new player cannot be changed at this point of time. Changing {{extra musicsample}} won't solve that. It only solves the broken centering of the player. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 18:03, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
I think the indentation you observed is the problem described in the original VP/T topic. You probably hadn't purged the page, so it was using the old (non-fixed) version of the template. (outdent) I didn't purge the page; I refreshed an article page in the browser and I've usually observed changes to templates that way, but perhaps I didn't see it. As for mwEmbed, it was not enabled when I did the tests yesterday. I just enabled it. I think I am going to turn it off to avoid seeing the wide player.

Who decided to implement a new player that requires so much width? For audio samples that are required to be low quality and 30 seconds or less, we should have something with few controls, perhaps start/stop only. — John Cardinal (talk) 15:48, 31 December 2009 (UTC)

This is work by Michael Dale. Video was the first priority here. I think the idea of a special mode for audio only has been proposed already, but it's still under development. Can you give information on which browser you use where you saw the problem ? I'd like to further investigate, because that current HTML styling is awfully broken. OK. I thought there might be some location on WP. Here are three links to screenshots. Each was made using the "Ticket to Ride" article.
  • This is the new native Firefox 3.5 player. It too has a minimum width that is rather large. The offset to the right is because the width of the new player is set to 140, but it does not listen. The box of 140 is centered (causing the offset), the overflow of width is at the right of the 140px wide and centered box. My change does not affect this problem. The Cortado JAVA player is the only player that listens to the 140px width statement. QUI

Hi DJ

I'm sorry to have to trouble you about this but I tried to install your QUI script before and I just can't get it to work and have no idea what I'm doing wrong! I've installed the script on my monobook.js file and also at User:5 albert square/Status but it keeps saying my status is unknown and it's not picking up on it? I've tried clearing my browser cache, logging out and back in and still no difference.

Before I give up on it, any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Image renames

Hi TheDJ  :-) I don't know if I did something wrong. I'm just going on on a work we started montsh ago. There are a lot of covers of CDs in the category Album covers thata are not understandable by themselves. So I sterted to request the change of those names to have files listed by authors. This has been made by bots, manually I ask just for the "right" (IMO) name. In this way we'll have all the cover of an artist listed under "ARTIST NAME - TITLE OF THE ALBUM". I think this will help in managing all those files. I hope I did not something wrong, if so, please accept my apologies. :-)

P.S. I found that there are a lot of files (Album covers) that are not used in any page. Do we have to keep them? Thanks and have a nice day.

Hi, it's me again. I don't want to bother, but I think we have a problem: files that I suggested to rename previously of March 2009 have been moved with bots. In the files that you moved I see the "sort key". In example [[Category:Album covers|...ish]] in the file File:Doctor Who - ...ish album cover.jpg. This make all this work completely unuseful because the moving is intended to have finally the file listed under the name of the artist. Could you please check out the message I posted at Talk:IIPM today? Here's a backstory, if you will. Until a couple of months back, IIPM went to Indian Institute of Planning and Management. One user, wifione, created a disambig page and populated it with other orgs using the name IIPM. Which is fine. But given the guidelines of primary topic for disambig, I think IIPM should link to Indian Institute of Planning and Management and the disambig page should be linked at the top. What do you think? For example, if I view the revision history of village pump via popups, and click the section link of this edit, it goes to this broken url instead of this. Qui is as efficient as a window with your contributions open at all time. It doesn't know anything more (nor does it really refresh all the time or anything. it only pulls information when the user explicitly chooses "show friends" in the menu). Sure, they could just refresh a window with my contributions and use that to keep track of me, but my comment is that for a tool which is supposedly used to track friends, I think there should be a way to prevent it from tracking you if you aren't friends and it is instead being used to stalk you. The user who added me has added everyone who has raised any sort of issue on their talkpage, not their friends and it is thus being used as a stalking tool, regardless of your intentions. Though I see where you are coming from, I think you are underestimating the potential (or current use) for abuse here. I'm well aware of who is following me, but there is no effective way to prevent them from doing so, which I don't think is right. I think if you had the script add a note to the talkpage of a user when they are added with a link to a page where they can opt out, similar to the blacklist pages, my concerns about privacy would be somewhat alleviated. --Terrillja talk 13:04, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
As stated on the Qui page, such behavior is a bad faith usage of the tool, which would make the user eligible for blocking. Special:LongPages

I posted this in the village pump, but no one seemed to notice it. So I decided to ask you, since you seem to know your tech stuff.

Special:LongPages seems to have a problem, because it says that "There are no results for this report". I did a bit of research on Help:Special page, and Special:AllMessages, but I'm still not sure what happened to it. Could you explain what happened? and do you think you could fix it? WP:ACTOR and non-standard Filmographies (redux)

I've stumbled into this issue during the last few days, having worked on maybe 20 filmographies attempting to clean-up poor markup and styling.

I think the time has come to sort the issue of non-standard styling in the name of a wikiproject. The whole initiative originating there reeks of article ownership, wikiprojects as "governing" bodies, and impeding site accessibility in the name of meretricious appearance.

I think the appropriate outcome is filmographies either implemented as bog-standard wikitables, or a suite of templates/css that allow central control of the styling (i.e. to site-wide conventions).

Deleting redirects

As you do alot of moving file name move request, I wanted to ask what are your thoughts about deleting the redirects after all article and talk page / user page links have been corrected to the new name. Do you feel the redirects should stay or should be deleted per CSD R3 if the prior name was something such as an example of file:34547484hfgd.jpg? In my opinion, they should stay, to make the history of a file as transparent as possible. However, if the file is from a point that often sees uploads (due to the location being a common camera filename for instance), it is probably better to remove them (considering possible Commons conflicts). —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 09:19, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

Carbonear

Hi DJ,

Canadaolympic989 has similarly orphaned my File:Torbay.JPG by replacing it with File:Torbay NFLD logo.gif. I don't know what is best for the articles. Both my files and Canadaolympic989's files are town seals, but mine are photos of wood carvings of the town seals while Canadaolympic989's are digital images of the town seals. It would be redundant to keep both on the articles, but that necessitates the deletion of the other. Any thoughts?

You can see from the history that I also added another small fix, for something related which had bugged me. Sometimes HotCat's suggestoion box seems to autocomplete category names a little over-enthusiastically: If I wanted "Category:Foo" but there is also "Category:Foo fighters", sometimes it seems to auto-complete by adding the " fighters" even if that's not what I want. It's not a big deal, and I simply type a few extra spaces at the end of the categ I want to stop any further auto-completion: so I enter "Foo   ", and click OK. That works fine, but the edit summary then includes an un-needed note that it has resolved "Category:Foo   " to "Category:Foo". One of my fixes cures this, though not very elegantly; there may be a better way of doing this. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 15:13, 27 March 2010 (UTC)

Hotcat - extra space when removing cats in front of sigs

FYI

It seems a lot of your upgrades from jpeg to png are being nominated for deletion (by people who are just following the rules without looking any deeper) because they "aren't being used anywhere". While such nominations are technically accurate, they aren't seeing that the files are indeed in use through redirects. While you haven't done anything actually wrong, in the interests of peace between inclusionists and deletionists, it would probably be best to replace the file extension in articles where you make such upgrades. This will make searching for files with "improper" FURs a little easier. Alternatively, you could also tag them with something to categorize them into something that can be excluded from such searches in the future. — BQZip01 — talk 06:02, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

Small Icons?

Hi there,

on the page MediaWiki:Monobook.js it lists you as a maintainer of the small "icons"
(the protection locks and featured stars)

so that they move when either sitenotice or centralnotice is being used

i have coppied the page (and other pages like common.js & .css), but i can not seam to get it to work on my wiki

Hotcat for Bengali wikipedia

Dear TheDJ, We have been use this js for our wiki. We are facing a short issue. "Category" is in bengali "বিষয়শ্রেণী". When we apply remove Category start with bengali content Category(বিষয়শ্রেণী), "catagory "xxx" not found,may be it is in a template" messages comes. And when it content start with english "catagory:" ,its works fine. And also we can add cat nicely. I am trying with below changes,but its not works 

var newcatstring = '\n\[\[Category:' + cat_add + (cat_key != null ? cat_key : "") + '\]\]';

change to 

var newcatstring = '\n\[\[বিষয়শ্রেণী:' + cat_add + (cat_key != null ? cat_key : "") + '\]\]';

unsupported file type?

Ooops - I got it backwards - most system support SVG, which is, I believe, a compact, open format and therefore preferred. Except Wikipedia. I switched to JPG, which has bigger files and does not scale well. Perhaps I should delete these SVG files, but now I note that they render much better. 'Massimo' family article - request for advice

Dear TheDJ, I noticed your note to Fabritius on the 'Massimo' family article talk page.

If I may, I would like to ask for your advice, as a far less experienced editor than yourself.

When this page was protected, admin Nick D asked Fabritius and myself to start a discussion regarding the disputed last paragraph of the article. As I indicated in the note I left on Nick D's talk page (see this post), and a subsequent note I left on the 'Massimo' article talk page (see this post), I am happy to lay out the arguments and discuss the differences with Fabritius in a calm, fact-based and non-personal way.

By way of background, while the page was blocked for repeated 'edit warring' over the last paragraph, I would like to point out that I have never actually added any content to the article that wasn't already there for years before I first edited. I have only reversed the new 'vanity' edits by made by 'Fabritius' in Jan 2010 (and subsequently) and added authoritative, original online sources to back up the original paragraph. The paragraph in dispute has remained essentially unchanged since 2006 (see the edit by 'CARAVAGGISTI' on 28/09/06 in this version, para at bottom), until Dec 2009 (see the edit by LeilaniLad on 2/12/09 in this version, para at bottom), apart from 'non-structural' changes (such as a person passing away and being replaced by their heir). Between Sept 2006 and Jan 2010 many editors have altered content on the page, but the paragraph in dispute remained essentially the same. I am not trying to push my own content or views, I am simply trying to revert the article to the state it was in before my first edit, after a sustained and repeated attempt by an editor with a clear conflict of interest (Fabritius has admitted that he is a member of the family and writing about himself - see conflict of interest link below), from changing the article to focus on himself, without providing the source back-up required.

I saw your advice to Fabritius about familiarising himself with and following the dispute resolution process, and trying to achieve consensus. I agree with you and have begun to lay out my arguments in a researched, sourced and referenced way - easy even for someone unfamiliar with the topic to understand - on the 'Massimo' talk page. For example, I have answered Fabritius's key argument - that only he is entitled to the Princely title and the other members of the family are not - with a detailed response, with multiple references and links to an original and universally-recognised source. Fabritius presented his key arguments in the following posts: his request for an edit to the protected page (see this post), and his second request for an edit (see this post). In response, I have replied with a comprehensive answer (see this post for full details of my research) which I believe comprehensively supports my argument.

I am genuinely trying to have a civilised discussion, based on scholarship and facts, but I am not getting a reasonable response on the other side. Instead of Fabritius providing me with his counter arguments and trying to reach a solution, I am the subject of insults - being called a 'liar' (see this post), 'ridiculous' (see this post), and 'biased' (see this post). I am genuinely trying to work according the the Wiki guidelines on dispute resolution, yet I am finding it hard to have a reasoned exchange.

I fear Fabritius's clear conflict of interest (see this post on 'Fabritius's conflict of interest' for details) is making him unable to make clear, concise arguments based on real research and sources/references. Fabritius has been very active since the article was protected, repeatedly trying to appeal to Nick D directly on his talk page to just revert the edit (see these posts), yet since I have posted my detailed response to his questions well over 24hrs ago, he has been silent. As the 'conflict of interest' link above explains, I am a neutral editor, am categorically not a member of the Massimo family (despite Fabritius's strong insinuations) and do not have a conflict of interest. Given Fabritius has a clear conflict of interest, by his own admission, should he be allowed to edit this page at all?

Despite this obvious issue, I would welcome a debate with Fabritius in order to find a solution. I would also particularly welcome comments from other Wikipedia editors on the points I have made and the sources I have used to prove that my reversal of the last paragraph in the article to its original form is correct.

My concern is that 5 days is not enough time for this discussion to take place, and I am convinced that if/as soon as the protection is lifted, Fabritius will simply start reversing the current edit again, having ignored the detailed arguments put forward on the talk page.

I am minded to ask that the protection on the article to be extended back to 'indefinite' (as Nick D originally protected it - see this link), in order to allow enough time for a proper discussion, ideally with Fabritius, but perhaps more importantly with other editors, so that a reasoned consensus may be reached.

I would very much welcome your thoughts and advice on my talk page.
