Templeton Estate

I'm preparing an article on Winston F. Guest and came across what seems like a discrepancy. I know zero about this matter so perhaps someone who does could clarify and rectify it:

Old Westbury, New York

This Wiki article claims the Alfred I. duPont property was called Templeton (This is incorrect: it was built in 1916 and owned by his first wife, Alicia and was known as "White Eagle". Sold in 1921 to Mrs. Frederick Guest (Amy Phipps) [1] [2], they renamed it Templeton which it remained until it was donated to the NYIT by the estate of their son, Winston Guest)

BUT:

Brookville, New York

This Wiki article also claims the mansion is in Old Westbury, saying that the DeSeversky Conference Center of the New York Institute of Technology was formerly Templeton, mansion of socialite and businessman Winston Guest. -- Note the New York Institute of Technology article says: Old Westbury campus houses the sports complex, administrative offices, as well as the de Seversky Center. (There is a photo of the de Seversky Center and it is in fact Templeton as per matching photos at this external website that places it in Brookville with a link to a Google Earth Map that allows each of the municipalities borders to be highlighted.

Assessment

All WPNY articles now have a quality assessment (that is, Category:Unassessed New York articles is empty). This is not to say all of the assessments are correct. =) It's also not to say that all articles have an importance assigned to them, either. Category:Unknown-importance New York articles is still very full and needs work to pare down. Assessing importance for sports teams

What level of importance should we assign to articles on sports teams? My suggestion would be High-importance for the Bills, Jets, Giants, Sabres, Rangers, Islanders, Yankees, Mets, and Knicks; Mid-importance for all other professional sports teams and Division I college athletics (e.g., Syracuse Orange, but not Syracuse Orange football); and Low-importance for non-professional teams. Photography

This discussion started in NYC Transportation but it's more about how we take pictures of a wider variety of places in a wider geographical area, so I figured this wider forum would be more appropriate.

Film?? Wow. Pharmacies sell digital cameras almost as cheap; cheaper if you include the cost of a couple dozen prints, and with a quicker and easier path to Wikipedia. Don't need a fancy kind of digicam; see Wikipedia:Photograph your hometown. Jim.henderson (talk) 21:52, 9 January 2010 (UTC)

As I'm new to the Wikimedia Commons scene and uploading media, I find that I frequently need to correct my images because they come out too dark. The Wikimedia Commons seems to update images infrequently. I posted File:Myrtle Wyckoff BMT Canarsie Line platform.JPG first with the original image from my camera, then with a lighter one. The lighter image is not showing up as a thumbnail, but it is when the full photo is shown. But then I just saw that File:161st Street Yankee Stadium IRT Jerome southbound platform 2009 Yankee Stadium.JPG was just updated, so it must be an annoying delay. My results also don't come out as glossy as I'd like. Do you also have any tips on nighttime shots? Tinlinkin (talk) 22:13, 9 January 2010 (UTC)

Yes, Jim. I've seen plenty of these cheap digital cameras in pharmacies, but in spite of the wikiessay you've showed me, when I take a picture, I prefer to do it with quality. Sadly, I don't always get it, as I didn't in some recent photos of some churches in Patchogue. Getting good quality on film presents difficulties, particularly outdoors and at night and for Internet use.

1. Film is expensive. With a high cost per picture, amateurs with film tend to take fewer pictures rather than practice exposure bracketing and similar methods requiring repetition.
2. Gratification and feedback are delayed. Amateur normally wait until the roll is finished, then wait for the pictures to make their round trip to the processing shop. Electronic pictures, you can see a second after snapping them, when you're still on location with the same lighting, and can snap again to get it right this time.
3. When the print or slide comes back from the shop, it's not yet ready for Wikipedia but must be scanned into electronic digital form. This results in lower quality than if the picture was digital in the first place. It also delays the process.
4. Film has poor dynamic range. Smart film photographers must devote time and thought to revealing what's happening in shadows, and avoid blowing the whites. Electronic pickups have inherently better range. Some of the advantage is lost to the default JPEG compression format, which is why sophisticated digiphotographers (more sophisticated than me) use RAW photo formats.
5. Film darkrooms are expensive and difficult, thus amateur ones are rare. For a higher processing fee, you can tell a skilled darkroom worker what you want, which introduces the complication of communication. Simple digital darkroom programs like Picasa can do simple but highly effective adjustments without a great deal of study, while complex ones like GIMP can carry out very sophisticated manipulations at little cost, for the photographer who applies the aforementioned great deal of study.
6. Oh, yeah. Night pix. A few weeks ago I was too slow to get to Journal Square to photograph its infrastructure in daytime so I turned on my lights and kept pedalling south through twilight, and was rewarded with an unexpected encounter with Five Corners, Jersey City. I took a dozen or more pictures, carefully bracing my arms and camera against shakes, and bracketing with the exposure compensation button found on most $100 cameras, and one or two came out nicely. Getting those shots with film would have been very much more difficult.

Digital photography is the way to quality and convenience, especially when seeking pictures to illustrate Wikipedia articles. Film, on the other hand, can bring quality to the creation of photoposters to hang on a wall, at the cost of great inconvenience. Jim.henderson (talk) 15:50, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

Thanks so much for the replies (and for bringing this to a better forum). But you may have answered Dan's questions better than mine. I do have a digital camera, but the results I get usually require me to use an image editor before uploading. (I use IrfanView.) I don't mind the editing, but the photos I get from the camera tend to be too dark. Is this to be expected? I avoid using a flash in the subway because it is distracting. As for the nighttime photos, my unsteady hand is my major problem, so I'll try your bracing tip. How do you do that? File:Atlantic Terminal night.JPG is my best attempt of ~10 photos at the same location, and it came out good (not great) because the camera was resting on a newspaper box, which also ended up being captured. Lastly, I see many guys with cameras on their necks on the subway. I don't have that kind of camera, but that's an inspiration to me for contributing photos here. Gotta edit. More than 95% of my uploads are of pix I edited. Most are very mild edits, cropping away some irrelevant bits or brightening the darkness when it is excessive. My File:Bethesda angel cloudy jeh.jpg from a few weeks ago received mild geometric treatment but more aggressive adjustments of brightness and contrast because bronze statues are not easily photographed. When the somewhat bluish original sky got blown away to total whiteness during this processing I thought, oh no; this is bad. No no, I then decided; this is good. Readers don't want to know about the sky that day; they want to know about the statue. The original is somewhat informative when seen on a good quality screen but I like to do my editing on a bad screen so the result will work for most readers. Perhaps this should replace my prettier but less informative pic in the sculptor's Wikibiography.

My first two cameras, in 2007 and 2008, usually maintained proper brightness in gloomy conditions. Most night pix and subway ones with my almost year-old Nikon P6000 are also all right, but cloudy days usually come out too dark. So, that's why most cameras have a button with a symbol of a diagonal line separating a black side and a light side, with plus and minus signs. This exposure compensation button tells the robot inside to bias itself in the desired direction. With my older cameras in poor lighting I sometimes took a set of 3 pix including one each compensated darkly and lightly. With this 2009 one, when uncertainty arises I snap a set of two; one uncompensated and one compensated towards brightness. And of course I still vary the shooting position left, right, forward, back. Sitting at the computer it's a matter of picking the least bad, or most editable, and then editing.

Irfan would not fit my bad habit of holding the camera crooked; attentive photographers don't need the ability of an editor to rotate. More important, however, is holding steady when darkness forces long exposures. Camera tripods are the obvious answer except that they severely cut into my preference for light travel. That article, however, led to an external link about the string tripod. I didn't make one, but learned to use the camera strap in a somewhat similar manner. Small, thin cameras intended for pocket or purse have a single lug for attaching a wrist strap, suitable for casual use, which worked well for me at first. Thicker cameras and more serious photographers prefer two lugs, for a longer strap over the neck.

Darkness forces the computer inside the camera to seek more light, partly by opening the aperture all the way but mainly by lengthening the exposure. This creates blur if the camera or the object is moving at all. Especially on subways I usually let the camera rest against my belly, turn on power when a shot presents itself, and shoot from the belly, usually without using the screen or viewfinder, since zoom is useless in such circumstances and I can crop at the computer to take care of any aiming problem but can't repair blur. The ancient rifleman technique applies. Take a breath, let it halfway out, stay still with muscles slightly tensed, and gently squeeze the trigger. Leaning against a pillar or other stable object adds stability, same as for a sniper leaning on a tree. Occasionally, when seated, I put the strap under my foot, pull gently up, and get less stability than a monopod but as long as it's enough, it's enough.

When I lift the camera, steadiness still counts. Extended arms are notoriously unsteady, so I brace my elbows against my chest and the camera against my face, sometimes losing the view through the viewfinder in search of steadiness. The camera has flat surfaces which can be rested against orthogonal surfaces, though in a station those surfaces may be vibrating, so for some of those shots I rest the camera against my hand which pads it from the pillar, bench back, or other fixed item. Outdoors, even relatively flimsy street furniture such as a single pole holding up a stopsign is pretty stable as long as I don't provide the impulse for it to move. When the bracing furniture accidentally gets into frame, well, that's why we edit our pix, but I also move the camera forward, even if it results in only partial support or keeps me from seeing the screen.

Perhaps for shooting pix out a train window I should get a length of black, soft foam to form a gasket/cushion against the glass. I imagine it would be especially handy for yards in The Bronx that have bright daylight and no other convenient vantage point. Of course vibrations in the dark can also be made less a problem with a bigger camera, which is more sensitive especially if it has fewer Megapixels, but again it would cramp my style of drive-by (or pedal-by) shooting. Always glad to help. In the 28 months since a relative got me into it by discarding her broken and obsolete camera, I've taken a bit over 20,000 bad pix of New York and a few good ones or anyway mediocre. Studying the frequent failures has taught me a few things, and aimless Wikibrowsing a few more. Alas, much of the photo stuff in Wikipedia is written by experienced photographers for their fellows, rather than for ignorant newbies like me, so as an experienced writer I write my own stuff. I hate to trash a whole category, but every single article in the Category:Geography of Yonkers, New York is a total disaster. They're filled with innacuracies and omissions, and many need to be renamed. Category:Education in Poughkeepsie, New York

I started the above category and was working through stuff in Category:Poughkeepsie, New York when I remembered the thing about villages/towns/cities in New York and that there may be both a town and a city named Poughkeepsie. Could someone have a look at these two categories, along with maybe Category:Education in Dutchess County, New York and make sure that nothing is too messed up? If it looks fine then great, but if there is some huge problem with it let me know and I'll just delete the new category and set things back to the way they were. Long Island Arena

The article states "Former U.S. President John F. Kennedy made a visit to the arena on November 6, 1960 while campaigning for the presidency."

This is true I was there, I was also there in the same election year when his opponent Richard Nixon Campaigned there also, of course he lost to Kennedy. Nixon filled the arena, Kennedy packed it, and the parking lot also. I don't know the date not even the month. sorry

Per the discussion at Wikipedia talk:Disambiguation pages with links#Proposal for New York villages within towns, a large number of disambiguation links are directed towards two-link disambiguation pages for a village within a town - there are close to 150 such pages. Strictly speaking, under our WP:TWODABS guideline, a disambiguation page is not called for where there are only two possible disambiguation targets. In any case, it would be ideal if, for each of these pairs, the more prominent entity were deemed the primary topic, and linked by a hatnote to the other entity. Census 2010 & nearby cities

What plans exist for updating entries dependent on census data when Census 2010 data becomes available? Is someone working on a bot for that? Also, when that is done, it would be good to put in better information on nearby cities. In rural areas, that boiler-plate sentence in entries for towns, "The Town of X is in the Y part of the county and is southwest of Z." just isn't very useful. I have ideas about how this could be done better.

Rewrite of New York under way; your help would be appreciated

I'm currently rewriting the New York article at User:UpstateNYer/New York. I planned on doing this myself, in the same way I rewrote Albany, New York, but it would be much faster if some users here could take on a section or two of the article. I'd ask that you stay away from the history section until I finish it, then you can have at it. The state symbols section is complete, and most of the geography section is done. If you need help finding sources, you might want to start at Bibliography of New York. If you want to help, please indicate so by adding your name below and which section you'd like to own for the rewrite process, and feel free to get started! (Quick tip: since the 2010 census numbers will come out on Dec 31st at the latest, you might want to hold back on the Demographics section until after those numbers are available.) Collaboration with the Wine Project on New York wine articles?

Hello! For 2011 the Wine Project is doing a new Wine Improvement Drive where each month we focus on an area of articles that relate to a particular theme. In January, we are are ringing in the New Year with New World wine, with a focus on the wines of the Northern Hemisphere-Canadian wine, American wine and Mexican wine. I am going by related projects to see if there is any interest in collaboration between this project and the wine project on the subject of New York wine. Some suggestion on potential article creations include History of New York wine, Seneca Lake Grape Wine Company, William Warner Bostwick, Charles Fournier and John Jaques - pioneering New York winemakers, bios on important modern winemakers like Richard Olsen-Harbich or some of the redlinks in the grape variety infobox of the New York wine article. On a smaller scale, there are several New York wine related articles that could use some help with clean up or expanding beyond a stub such as the articles on Konstantin Frank Pleasant Valley Wine Company, Germania Wine Cellars, Cayuga Lake AVA, Hudson River Region AVA, Lake Erie AVA, Long Island AVA, Niagara Escarpment AVA, North Fork of Long Island AVA, The Hamptons, Long Island AVA. Additionally there are winery articles that need help establishing their notability with references to pass WP:GNG such as Hunt Country Vineyards and Bully Hill Vineyards. And, of course, of HUGE help would be the upload of free use photos of New York wine wineries, wines and wine regions to Commons that could be used to better illustrate New York wine articles. Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. Formal A-class review process?

I'm starting this thread to discuss the possibility of having a formal A-class review process for articles that fall under WPNY's scope. I think it would be a good idea because the FAC process is perpetually overloaded, and having a few uninvolved but knowledgeable editors identify any structural issues beforehand would help an article's quality and better prepare it for FAC. What does everyone think of this? Are there enough articles at this level of quality, and editors willing to do this, that it makes sense for the project?

Copyediting for FAC

I'm just throwing out an idea here. I see you guys are fairly active, and I'm currently copyediting one of your articles at FAC, La Stazione. I have some connections to New York, and I don't mind doing some copyediting at, or in preparation for, WP:FAC. But it's slightly annoying to make the same corrections over and over for the same writers, so over at WP:MILHIST, we've created a WP:Checklist of things that we like to ask writers to learn how to handle over time in exchange for the "free" copyediting. I'm not sure how many wikiprojects I can make this offer to ... it will help if you guys have someone who at least understands the items on the checklist that I could collaborate with. East Bronx watercourses

In recent years I've become interested in the historic and existing (and potential -- "water always wins") watercourses of the east Bronx, where I live, and that have slowly been built over over the past 200 years. At the Bill of Rights Museum I saw a map of them as they were in colonial times. Westchester Creek and tributaries of the Hutchinson R. are visible stubs of a flow that still must exist underground (as traceable by weight limit signs on some streets) that made a large portion of the eastern Bronx a swamp that cut off the peninsula that ends in Throggs Neck, or the entire southeast portion of the boro, from the rest. Enhancing the Opportunity NYC page

While Opportunity NYC, a Conditional Cash Transfer program in New York City, is not a High Importance article on WikiProject New York, I feel it could become a much more prominent part of the New York City political sphere in a few years. It just completed its 3 year pilot program, and MDRC, a foundation which evaluates real world programs targeted to low income people, is currently finishing their initial research on the results of the program after 3 years. While the data only covers the first 2 years of the program, there are already some short term benefits shown in the data, and more will come as MDRC continues its long term research. I plan to add a section to the Opportunity NYC article about the initial results from the program, and will continue to update it as more research arises. Does anyone have any stories/information about the Opportunity NYC program and its results beyond the MDRC’s research?Sbh2 (talk) 04:55, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

Unencyclopedic budget section headings

Our NY county articles are being spammed with unencyclopedic section headers regarding budget outlays and revenues. Not only is this information non-encyclopedic, it will be something hard to keep up to date every single year and creates blank sections that may never get filled in. I have tried reverting those counties under the NYCD wikiproject's perview but have been reverted by same spammer. Sorry, Daniel; I have to agree. Edits like this are not useful (with the possible exception of the sales tax, though I don't think that's particularly encyclopedic). Adding structure without actually adding content is not generally looked upon favorably. It's like adding a bunch of section headers without writing any prose. Waverly Confusion

As a native of the Village of Waverly I am attempting to clean up this article, the containing Town of Barton, and the confusingly same-named Town of Waverly, Franklin County, New York. I would appreciate any help, feedback, etc.

Naming the articles is just one issue. It seems pretty straightforward to me that to be consistent with Wikipedia convention for other towns and villages in New York (cf Owego), the primary titles should be "Waverly (village), New York" and "Waverly (town), New York," and I have created redirects for those entities for now, but it would be good to see the primary titles changed to something more consistent. Actually, I think we prefer using the county name to disambiguate. In the case of Owego, both are in the same county (as the village is in the town), so we have to use the level of government to disambiguate. But in Waverly's case, disambiguating by county is available. I think county disambiguation is better because a reader is more likely to know what county a place is in than whether it's a town or a village. Powers ^T 12:55, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

OK, that makes sense. I have another thought. Maybe the article Waverly, New York should point directly to the Tioga Co village. It seems the town of Waverly (Franklin County) has no post office of its own, but I don't know if people in that area think of "Waverly" as a place, or use "St. Regis Falls" or other hamlets and locations. Anyone else know? If it's primarily an administrative division and not so much a familiar place name then it might make sense to rename the village article. How do you get an article upgraded from "Stub", and given an importance score? I have done a tremendous amount of work on the "West Canada Creek" article, and I don't even know if it's been looked at. If anyone that can give a rating looks at the "West Canada Creek" would you please give me feedback? I have also started an article on "French Louie", and one on the "Adirondak League Club". 4707th Air Defense Wing

The 4707th Air Defense Wing page is rated start/low importance on this project. IANA Project member, but I don't think this page should be in the project. The wing was located in MA. It had subordinate units located at three Air Force Bases in NY, but these units each have their own pages, which can be included in the NY Project. If anyone is interested in the wing, these pages link to its page.

I would suggest deleting it from the NY Project.

Sir William Johnson

Gentle Editors,

I must take issue with your designation of Sir William Johnson, 1st Baronet's biography as "C-Class, Low Importance" to the State of New York. He is a towering figure, to say the least, in both the history of the Province of New York, what was to become NYS, and what was to become the USA. Even NYS recognized his importance early on; by the very early 1800s (don't remember exactly when off-hand and this article left this information out) it sent agents out to buy and secure all of the Johnson papers they could for incorporation into the NYS Archives. I believe an agent was even sent to England to secure Johnson-related documents there. The WP article's failure to give him his full due is not the fault of history, but of this weak bio. It requires the attention of someone who is both knowledgeable about the period and has the writing skills to do him justice. Category:Ithaca, New York

There's a problem with the category since it does not distinguish between the city and the town of which the city isn't part of. The category claims its main article to be Ithaca, New York which is the article for the city while the sub-category Category:Ithaca College should not be in the city category since it is located entirely within the town. --Matthiasb (talk) 18:34, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

Towns and villages

I grew up in upstate New York, so I'm no stranger to the sometimes byzantine system of villages and towns and cities. I know, for example, that Batavia, New York and Batavia (town), New York are separate entities. But I question the value to our readers (cf. WP:ASTONISH) and the ease of wikilinking when pages like Cuba, New York and Le Roy, New York are disambiguation pages. I'd be delighted if we could designate primary topics for these, or better yet, consolidate. I'm picturing a lede to the effect of:

"Le Roy is a town and village in Genessee County, New York."

Where a village, town, or city has distinctive characteristics, we can treat those in individual sections. And of course, this should be done with discretion; in some cases, especially page length, separate articles might be the best approach. It would not apply to settlements with the same name in different parts of the state (are there any?). --BDD (talk) 17:10, 6 October 2012 (UTC)

Actually, we had this discussion some time ago at Wikipedia talk:Disambiguation pages with links/New York villages within towns, wherein the consensus was that the town encompassing the village should be the primary topic, meaning that the disambiguation pages should be moved to "Foo, New York (disambiguation)" titles, and the "(town)" pages should be moved to the "Foo, New York" titles. Category: Films set in New York

The category, "Films set in New York" should be further sub-divided by region. Right now, it is sub-divided into those set in New York City, and those set in NYS. Article tagging in relation to subprojects

There's a bit of discrepancy between the scope of this project and what's actually being tagged as within the scope. Many Long Island, New York City, or Hudson Valley-specific articles are tagged only for those subprojects, while some others are tagged for both. I can see the point behind tagging everything that's specific to an area of the state with just the subproject, and also the point in tagging them with the state project and the subproject, but right now the practice is horribly inconsistent.

Thus, I propose three ways to move forward:

1. Tagging everything covered by a subproject with just the subproject's banner.
2. Tagging everything covered by a subproject with the subproject's banner and the state's banner.
3. Tagging everything covered by a subproject based on their importance to the state. If it would be low-importance on the state level, leave it tagged for just the subproject. If it would be any higher than that, tag it with the subproject's banner and the state's banner.

One egregious example at the moment: WP:WPNY/A lists Brooklyn as an example of a High-importance article, but at the moment it isn't even tagged for this project. – TMF (talk) 21:04, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

(omigod, an edit conflict!) Yes, Number 3 makes sense. This WikiProject New York has been relatively inactive. For a while there was more activity in several local subprojects, though those may have lost steam too. Anything in a subproject should be considered already part of the New York level project. Option number 3 expresses that, reserving right for state-level project to indicate something more important at the state level. No example comes to mind, though. In theory, articles tagged by subprojects are part of WPNY, but in reality the only articles that are part of this project are the ones tagged with this project's banner, since any article not tagged with {{WPNY}} isn't included in the assessment statistics. This is what I was alluding to in my original post: tagging everything (#2) gives a true assessment of the quality of articles across the state; tagging everything not covered by a subproject (#1) gives an assessment of the state excluding subprojects; and hybrid option #3 would give an assessment of the quality of the state's most important articles.

While some projects go for #2 to keep tabs on the entire state, I think that's a slippery slope to go down. I mean, where do you stop tagging articles as part of a project? The national level? Continent? World? Meanwhile, #1 would exclude articles on some of the state's most prominent locations and concepts, like New York City. #3 seems like a happy medium, tracking only the articles that are most important to the state while leaving lesser articles to be handled by subprojects where they'd receive a higher importance rating and likely more attention.

I'm of the belief that projects should only be demoted to task forces if they're no longer able to sustain themselves. The New York City and New York state route projects definitely don't fit that bill, but some of the others might. The repurposing of the Syracuse project as a Central New York task force was proposed as early as 2009, and the Western New York project appears to be DOA.

I think it's worth consolidating and subsuming inactive WPNY "subprojects" into task forces even as just an administrative action. Having task forces established should encourage any intrepid project-starters to build a posse in the main project first before spilling out and not vice versa. If no one has any objections over the next day or so, I'll begin implementing #3, with high-importance (instead of the proposed mid) being the lowest importance for which an article will be tagged for a subproject and the state project. In summary, anything high or above that isn't tagged for WPNY will be tagged, and anything mid or lower that is tagged for WPNY will be detagged. Again, this only affects articles that are tagged with a subproject's banner.

I like the exceptions you put in for statewide officeholders and state-level historic events. With those exceptions, I'm mostly okay with "High-importance" and higher... however, I think state parks and possibly some non-Big-4 pro sports teams (those competing at the highest level in their respective sports) ought also to be exceptions and thus tagged with WPNY. I put the exceptions in after realizing that the original High- and Top-importance only proposal would exclude many of the state's most important historical figures, like DeWitt Clinton and Robert Moses. I'm not sure if state parks warrant an exception, though: while they're designated at the state level, very few of them are of statewide interest. Most of them probably don't even register at a countywide level.

I'm open to adding an exception for teams playing in the highest league for their sport for semi-consistency with the "Big 4" High-importance criteria. – TMF (talk) 22:04, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

I'm thinking primarily of Letchworth, Alleghany, and Niagara Falls State Parks, I guess; they're not big enough to qualify as a "large geographical region" (and thus High-importance), but they're of statewide interest. Hamlets in Lewis County

I was looking at the GNIS data for Lewis County, and they have a LOT of hamlets listed. I felt they should be represented here somehow. After seeing the archive about notability, it became clear that they should NOT have their own article for each little one. So I created a list article: List of hamlets in Lewis County, New York. I think it is a good starting point. However, I have some questions and would like opinions:

1. For each hamlet, should there be a redirect page to point to the list?
2. Should each hamlet be listed in the Lewis County navbox (Template:Lewis County, New York)? Or should I leave it as I have it now with a "List of other hamlets" link at the bottom? I see that the navbox for Oswego county (Template:Oswego County, New York) lists them all.

As an FYI, I have a program to scrape most of the data from GNIS, so I can create lists like this for other counties easily, should that be desired. Thanks --Arg342 (talk) 20:52, 16 December 2012 (UTC)

Most (if not all) articles on New York towns contain a list of all of the hamlets within that town. Given that, I don't know that we also need coverage of hamlets on a county level. I work on articles relating to roads, and when I come across a hamlet that's a redlink, I turn the link into an anchored redirect that points to the town's hamlet list. List of New York State Historic Markers county-level lists

Right now, the county-level historical marker lists are "List of New York State Historic Markers in __ County, New York". Comparable lists in other states include the state name just once, e.g. List of Indiana state historical markers in Monroe County or List of Pennsylvania state historical markers in Beaver County. Since New York doesn't place historical markers in other states, the ", New York" on the end seems redundant, or we could remove it from the start of the page title. Plus, the page is historical marker, not historic marker, and capitalisation is also an issue. What if all of these lists were moved to "List of New York state historical markers in __ County"? WikiProject SUNY

It appears that the project was "absorbed" by WPUS (or at least its assessment banner was) for some bizarre reason a while back. It would certainly make more sense for its article assessment to be handled by WPNY and its banner. That said, apparently WPUS also does the tagging for Columbia and Cornell universities. As I understand it, the SUNY project is a full, independent WikiProject that just had its assessment taken over by another project. So, it would be more of a subproject than a task force, albeit one whose assessment is handled by the WPNY banner. – TMF (talk) 15:32, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

You are correct TMF. Just to give some background on this I am the one who included it as a supported project under WPUS. I started a discussion on the SUNY talk page and on the talk page of WPNew York. At the time NY felt the project was inactive and didn't want it and no one commented on the Suny project talk page at all about the suggestion so after a long wait for comments I added it. With that said, I stopped supporting the WPUS project and the supported projects a few months ago so if you want to break it back out into its own banner or add it to WPNY feel free. What Kumioko means is that, with his stepping down as co-ordinator, there's no longer anyone at WPUS who thinks it's a good idea to include everything which has anything in the least to do with the United States in the project and is willing to usurp other projects for that reason. Before Kumioko, articles went into the most reasonable and logical WikiProject, and post-Kumioko they can do so as well, but during the Kumioko regime, WikiProject United States was a great vacuum cleaner that sucked up everything in its path. Ken I would appreciate it if you wouldn't try and get in my head. I have enough voices to contend with already. And what you are saying is ridiculous. I said exactly what I meant to say. I was the coordinator that got things done, did the maintenance, the newsletter, the collaboration, a lot of the assessment, day to day maintenance, etc. I never forced anyone to do anything but what I had was a bunch of loudmouthed bully editors scream bloody murder every time I tagged an article. Who were repeatedly allowed to show article ownership issues and didn't want to collaborate with anyone outside their cliche but because no one had the balls to enforce the policy I was the asshole for trying to make the project work. How dare I. So now the project is dead and editors like you with attitudes just like yours won. I'm sad to say I shouldn't have expected people to want to actually work together on here to build a better encyclopedia. They just wanted to stake their own claims and get credit. BTW before Kumioko tens of thousands of articles weren't tagged, they weren't assessed, they didn't have infoboxes, persondata, portals, categories or references. Hundreds didn't even exist. Before Kumioko dozens of projects were inactive or defunct (and they soon will be again). But because some editors who were allowed to "own" their articles, edit war and violate 3RR and generally act like assholes the WPUS project faced opposition at every turn. Kumioko was just doing what he felt was best when there was no one interested at that time in adopting inactive wikiprojects, and there were no objects. If there are other potential more focused (geographical or subject oriented) wikiprojects who wish to take up the burden, good. Unfortunately, at the time that was not the case. There is no reason for anyone to point any fingers, everyone has good intentions, lets all be civil and work together. Now that WPNY wishes to take up the responsibility, great. As I said at WPKS regarding their potential un-amalgamation, I saw WPUS as a central discussion board for those WikiProjects that did not have many (or any active) eyes on their pages when the need to form consensus arose; no harm in that.--RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 14:40, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

I didn't catch the comments made by the anon poster about Columbia before I hit save. I tend to agree that Columbia University would probably be a better fit for WPNYC since it is based in Manhattan. All of Cornell, Columbia, and SUNY's articles have been switched to the WPNY banner, which was upgraded to support the three projects. I recommend dropping a note at WPUS to let them know. They should remove the projects from the supported projects list and remove the code for these projects from their template. Otherwise it may cause confusion.
