Nevena Ivanović (Serbian Cyrillic: Невена Ивановић; Serbo-Croatian pronunciation: [nɛ̌ʋɛna ǐʋanoʋitɕ]; née Božović; Божовић; Serbo-Croatian pronunciation: [bɔ̂ːʒɔʋitɕ]; born 15 June 1994) is a Serbian singer-songwriter. She debuted by representing Serbia at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2007 with the song "Piši mi", placing third. Božović rose to prominence as the runner-up on the televised singing competition Prvi glas Srbije in 2013.

The following year, Božović and two other finalists, Mirna Radulović and Sara Jovanović, formed the girl group Moje 3 and represented Serbia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 with the song "Ljubav je svuda", failing to reach the finals. She was the first ever artist to ever compete in both the Eurovision Song Contest and Junior Eurovision Song Contests as a main performer.[1] Božović competed in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 again as a solo artist with the song "Kruna".

Life and career

Early life

She was born and attended school in Kosovska Mitrovica. Her parents are Ružica, professor of technical sciences, and Zoran, former basketball player. Her main role model is her sister Jelena, an architect, as Nevena always tried to copy her, thus grade skipping just to be able to study together with her sister.[2] Božović studied music at the University of Arts in Belgrade.[3] and in 2019 finished her specialization in solfeggio.

Career beginnings

Nevena competed at multiple festivals for children such as "Cvrkuti sa Ibra" - with a song "Ti nisi moj broj" (You are not my number), "Čarolija", "Svetosavski festival u Zrenjaninu" and "Dečji festival u Kruševcu", where her performances were awarded. In 2007, Božović participated in Izbor za dečju pesmu Evrovizije, Serbia's national selection for Junior Eurovision with "Piši mi" (Write me), a ballad for which she wrote lyrics and music. On the final night, she received the first place by both, juries and televote, and went on to Rotterdam, Netherlands to represent Serbia.

Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2007

On 8 December, Božović was ranked third overall with 120 points, making Serbia's best result in the contest. Her performance was followed by two ballerinas and only her song, along with Russia in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2007, received points from all participating countries.

Prizes at festivals

In 2009, after a small break from music, she decided to come back, taking part in Sunčane skale at Herceg Novi with song "Ti" (You). There she won first place at the first night (Night of New stars) and was awarded by "Golden siren". Also that year, Božović took part in famous Verdinote festival in Italy and won first place with song Il mio domani (My Tomorrow). In 2010 she also participated at Festival zabavne muzike in Vrnjačka Banja with song "Nije fer" (It's not fair).

Eurovision Song Contest 2013

In 2013, together with Mirna Radulović and Sara Jovanović, all three participants in Prvi Glas, she took part in Beosong 2013 with "Ljubav je Svuda" (Love is all around). The trio won the contest with over 25,000 votes and went on to represent Serbia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmö, where they under a new name Moje 3 performed in the first semi-final[4] and finished eleventh, missing out on the final by six points. They did manage to win Barbara Dex Award, but after they didn't qualify for the final, Serbia decided to take a one-year break from the contest.

Breakthrough in solo career

That same year, on 15 July, she presented her new single named "Pogledaj me" (Look at me), written by Aleksandra Kovač. In late December she performed her new single "Znam da noćas gubim te" on talk show "Veče sa Ivanom Ivanovićem". Music video was filmed in Kopaonik and published on 10 February 2014. It was her first music video on her new YouTube channel (Nevena Bozovic Official) and she said that It's completely different then the previous one and that it turned out just the way she wanted.[5]

She appeared at festival "Proleće u Beogradu" (Spring in Belgrade) with song "Tačka" (Dot), after which there comes a huge success with her newest song „Bal“ written by Aleksandra Milutinović. Music video was directed by actor Miloš Biković at Ada Bojana and instantly became a huge hit and music video with the most views on her official YouTube channel up to date.[6]

At the beginning of May 2015 she published new song "Trebam tebe" (I need you) and official video that was filmed at Vila Danica in Bela Crkva, Banat, while Miloš Biković was replaced with Croatian mannequin Vlaho Arbulić.[7] Song was autobiographical, as Nevena stated This is it, this is me.[8]

Eurovision Song Contest 2015

In the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 in Vienna, she was one of the five jurors for the Serbian jury panel, alongside Dejan Cukić, Marko Kon, Saša Milošević and Ksenija Milošević. In the first semifinal Nevena put I Want Your Love (Eduard Romanyuta song) as her favourite, followed by songs from North Macedonia, Belgium, The Netherlands, Russia, Romania, Hungary, Denmark, Greece, Estonia, Belarus, Georgia, Finland, Armenia and Albania respectively. Six out of ten songs that she wanted qualified to the final.

In the grand final, she gave her 12 points to Knez (singer), 10 points to Loïc Nottet and 8 points to Måns Zelmerlöw, followed by Polina Gagarina, Elina Born and Stig Rästa, Il Volo, Guy Sebastian, Nadav Guedj, Aminata and Ann Sophie respectively. In combined results from other jurors, as well as televoters, nine out of her ten choices were announced as points from Serbia, all except Germany (the votes have gone to Slovenia). Also, she was the Serbian jury member that gave the most points to the actual winner of the contest, Sweden.[9]

Career establishment and Slavianski Bazaar

Nevena continued her collaboration with Aleksandra Milutinović, as she influenced by writing music, lyrics and arrangement for her new song "Čujem da dolaziš u grad" (I hear you're coming to town), which was published just seven days before the end of 2015. I've been thinking about this song for over a year now and for me is a very special because I did it with my friends and a lot of love, she said.[10]

For her next song "Siesta" for the first time she collaborated with Goran Kovačić and Ljiljana Jorgovanović, while Darko Dimitrov returned after song "Bal" and become regular part of her music team. Song was published at the end of 2016.[11]

Parallel with finishing her master's degree at the University of Arts in Belgrade, in the middle of July 2017 she competed in Belarussian Vitebsk at famous festival Slavianski Bazaar in Vitebsk, which gathers participants from all Eastern Europe to celebrate Slavic music. Nevena had the highest amount of points on the first day of the final round (76) and eventually finished on third place performing a rendition of Christina Aguilera’s "Hurt", with just two points less than the winner (149).[12]

MAC Music Awards Ceremony and Magic Records

On 11th of June 2017 Nevena, in cooperation with her new publishing company Magic Records, presented her new single "Jasno mi je" (It's Clear to Me). Although she published just the lyrics video, song instantly became the biggest hit in whole Serbia and the rest of the region. Just three days later she published english version called "Dangerous Drug", which also has received positive reviews. Due to faculty commitments she made official music video three months after the lyrics version, but the demand was so great, that it even exceeded english version in terms of views. Radio stations played the song constantly, sometimes more than once a day, and until now it's her most watched song on YouTube platform.

The recognition for the big hit arrived at inaugural edition of the 2019 Music Awards Ceremony where she won the award for best Electropop song of the year.[13][14] Song also participated at OGAE Song Contest 2017, finishing at 26th out of 28 songs.[15]

She continued her successful collaboration with Magic Records by the single "Moja molitva"[16], which later also got english version "What I'm Looking For".[17]

Beovizija and Eurovision Song Contest 2019

Slightly before her participation at Beovizija, Nevena published music video for song "Prazni snovi" (Empty Dreams), which was used in the movie Psi umiru sami. It was a real pleasure having part in this movie and I tried to get into the atmosphere of the movie. To the crew I wish lot of success, in Serbia and internationally, she said.[18]

She competed in Beovizija 2019 with the song "Kruna". Having won her semifinal with four points ahead of Dženan Lončarević, she went to the final and won the whole competition, thus receiving the rights to represent Serbia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019.[19] She received most points from the jury panel, consisting of Miša Aleksić, Bojana Stamenov, Dejan Ivanović, Goca Tržan and Aleksandar Milić Mili and with third place by televote book her place for Tel Aviv in front of Dženan Lončarević and Saška Janković.[20]

On 11th of April the acoustic version of the song was released, as well as the backing vocals for the song. Ivana Vladović, Olga Popović, Dušan Alagić and Mladen Lukić, all experienced and famous musicians were announced to travel with Nevena in Tel Aviv.[21] Less than two weeks before her semifinal, Nevena also released english version named "Eternal Light", which was performed alongside Symphony Orchestra of Radio Television of Serbia, but stated that the song was released purely and entirely for promotional purposes I have never ever doubted the song will be sanged on Serbian, while english version should bring the poem closer to strangers.[22]

Already after first rehearsal, impressions were huge. Her emotional performance and spectacular rendition of a song dedicated to her husband[23] amazed the press centre and won the hearts of Europe because after rehearsals she won the first daily poll with a staggering 53% of the vote![24] She book herself place in the final having been in the top five from the jury votes and on seventh place by the televoters.[25] In the grand final she participated in between two big favourites, Mahmood (singer) and Luca Hanni, which resulted in lower placement at the end. She finished 13th with the televoters and 19th with the jurors and won 18th place overall with 89 points.[26]

I'm just glad I could cooperate with him because he is a very talented young artist.[28]
