China is the host nation of the 2008 Summer Olympics. China ranks on average fourth in the tallies of medals at the last three Olympic Games respectively. Chinese athletes have won 1,317 world championships and set 1,026 world records.[1] China debuted at the Summer Games in 1984 and is appearing in its 7th Summer Games in 2008. At the Athens games in 2004, China won 63 medals, including 32 golds, 17 silvers and 14 bronzes.
China is represented by the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC), and the team of selected athletes are officially known as Team China. As the host country, China gets an automatic quota for every competition, though athletes have to meet the qualification standards set by the country's national Olympics committee. A total of 639 athletes have qualified for places on the national team, this year's largest and significantly more than the 407-strong Chinese team that went to Athens in 2004. Chinese athletes from every province have qualified to compete in all 28 Olympic sports, marking the first time that Chinese athletes are represented in every sport at an Olympics. Of the total 639 athletes, 469 are competing in their first Olympics, 165 competed in Athens 2004, 37 took part in Sydney 2000 and the average age is 24.2 years. Three athletes, diver Guo Jingjing, shooter Tan Zongliang and basketballer Li Nan, are making their fourth Olympic appearances, having first competed in Atlanta 1996. China's Olympic delegation totals 1,099, which includes 460 officials.[2][3]
According to Olympic protocol, China entered as the last country into the Beijing National Stadium during the Opening Ceremony. They were led by basketballer Yao Ming and Lin Hao, a 9-year-old primary school student who had rescued two schoolmates during the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake, which killed around 70,000 and left 15 million homeless.

As the host nation, China automatically received a full complement of six quota spots (three for men, three for women) for the archery competitions. China's national selection competition resulted in Xue Haifeng, Jiang Lin and Li Wenquan taking the three men's spots, while Zhang Juanjuan, Chen Ling, and Guo Dan earned the women's spots.[4] Xue and Zhang are both veterans of the 2004 Games, with Zhang a member of the women's team that took the silver medal. That medal was China's fourth silver in archery; the Chinese archers will try to earn China's first gold in 2008.

China qualified ten boxers for the Olympic boxing tournament, far surpassing its guaranteed quota of at least six spots. The flyweight class was the only in which China did not qualify a boxer. Seven of the ten Chinese qualifiers did so at the world championships.[6] Hu, Maimaitituersun, and Zhang Xiaoping qualified at the first Asian continental qualifying tournament.[7]
