Instructions

Using a DYK suggestion string (see below examples), list new suggestions in the candidate entries section below under the date the article was created or the expansion began (not the date you submit it here), with the newest dates at the top. Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion; self-nominations are permitted and encouraged. Thanks for participating and please remember to check back for comments on your nomination.

DYK criteria

Official criteria: DYK rules and additional guidelines

Sample DYK suggestion strings

Please use one of the strings below to post your DYK nomination, using the "author" and "nominator" fields to identify the users who should receive credit for their contributions if the hook is featured on the main page.

  1. Nom without image:
  2. Nom with image:
To include more than one new or expanded article in a single hook: |article2= |article3= |article4= | (etc)
To include more than one author: |author2= |author3= | (etc)
To include alternate hooks: |ALT1= |ALT2= | (etc)
    To add a comment: |comment=
To add the article you reviewed: |reviewed=

Do not wikilink the article title, or the author username field; the template will wikilink them automatically. Do wikilink the article title in the hook field, however.
Do not add a section heading if you are using the template; the template will add one for you.
Do not include a signature (~~~~) after the template.
Do not use non-free images in your hook suggestion.

An example of how to use the template is given below:

  • Note that you should only use one of the above templates for the original hook. If you want to suggest a second, alternative hook for the same article submission, just type it in manually. The above templates output useful code for each submission and if you employ them for alternative hooks, you will mess up the page formatting.
  • When saving your suggestion, please add the name of the suggested article to your edit summary.
  • Please check back for comments on your nomination. Responding to reasonable objections will help ensure that your article is listed.
  • If you nominate someone else's article, you can use to notify them. Usage: Thanks, ~~~~

Symbols

If you want to confirm that an article is ready to be placed on a later update, or that there is an issue with the article or hook, you may use the following symbols (optional) to point the issues out:

Symbol Code DYK Ready? Description
Yes No problems, ready for DYK
Yes Article is ready for DYK, with a foreign-language or offline hook reference accepted in good faith
Query DYK eligibility requires that an issue be addressed. Notify nominator with
Maybe DYK eligibility requires additional work. Notify nominator with
No Article is either completely ineligible, or else requires considerable work before becoming eligible

Please consider using on the user's talk page, in case they do not notice if there is an issue.

Backlogged?

This page often seems to be backlogged. If the DYK template has not been updated for substantially more than 6 hours, it may be useful to attract the attention of one of the administrators who regularly updates the template. See the page Wikipedia:Did you know/Admins for a list of administrators who have volunteered to help with this project.

Where is my hook?

If you can't find the hook you submitted to this page, in most cases it means your article has been approved and is in the queue for display on the main page. You can check whether your hook has been moved to the queue by reviewing the queue listings.

If your hook is not in the queue or already on the main page, it has probably been deleted. Deletion occurs if the hook is more than about eight days old and has unresolved issues for which any discussion has gone stale. If you think your hook has been unfairly deleted, you can query its deletion on the discussion page, but as a general rule deleted hooks will only be restored in exceptional circumstances.

What do you mean by "arcane"? Pls elaborate, esp. in the article. --74.13.125.218 (talk) 05:17, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Alternated the word; word from en:wiktionary. -- L.A.K.ERS 05:31, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I know the word. Why do you call that arcane? That's a journalist's POV. All rules are equally presented in a rulebook. More info on this is needed in the article to explain what "arcane/obscure" rule it was. --74.13.125.218 (talk) 12:20, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I can't find any information about the provision being arcane, so I'll just delete that part. -- L.A.K.ERS 00:39, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
But then why is this special? Kids usually enter the OHL when they are 16/17. --74.13.125.218 (talk) 02:06, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Because it's a provision. Only a few players have joined the CHL when they were 15 or younger (ie. John Tavares). -- L.A.K.ERS 02:09, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This fact comes from page 84 and 85 of Wang Zhongshu's Han Civilization (1982). Translated by K.C. Chang and Collaborators. New Haven and London: Yale University Press. ISBN 0300027230.
Alright then; this new reduction should be sufficient. Although I'd like more detail, I'm much more interested in passing this as a DYK.--Pericles of AthensTalk 09:22, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This fact comes from page 63 of Liu, Xinru's Ancient India and Ancient China: Trade and Religious Exchanges: AD 1–600 (1988). Delhi and New York: Oxford University Press. ISBN 019562050X.--Pericles of AthensTalk 19:48, 7 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Comment It's a substantial new article, and well cited, but surely the title should be Economy of Han Dynasty China or Economy of China under the Han Dynasty? Looking at the new hook, it seems to me that merchants don't take goods to a dynasty, any more than a dynasty has an economy! Xn4 (talk) 09:31, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia must follow consensus of reliable sources; most sinologists refer to the Chinese empires as "dynasties". As flawed as that may be, that is how they are referred to.--Pericles of AthensTalk 18:38, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sinologists talk about China and nothing else, so just "Han Dynasty" would be fine. For the general reader of the main page of an encyclopedia, a little more context is needed. Suggest page title as Economy of China during the Han Dynasty. --74.13.125.218 (talk) 06:45, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • I counted some 260 words in the original and some 1800 in the lastest version (incl. quote). It is entirely possible that I did not count so correctly, and I think my high count includes the references and templates. When I did the math at nomination time, I though I was at something like 4.5 times the earlier version, but hoped that the significant increase in references, from 2 to 18, would make up for that. If it doesn't, though luck. And I thought the hook was really cool. Thanks anyway. Drmies (talk) 18:31, 7 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • The prosesize tool gives 4631/1163 = 4.0x. It doesn't count the block quote at the end, but it does count the poem near the start (which maybe should be a block quote). Some exceptional 4x expansions have been approved. This article is nice, but it has a few run-on sentences and the climbing section could have a more encyclopedic tone. I'll leave the final decision to the other DYK editors. Shubinator (talk) 19:09, 7 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • I've reorganized one sentence that you might have thought was a run-on, and added a word or two (so maybe I'm at 4.1 now;)). If there are any run-ons I'd love to know (since I teach upper-level advanced grammar at a state university I'm interested in this stuff). I've also reorganized the 'people' section a bit. As for the climbing section, it's pretty heavily footnoted and I wouldn't consider it not encyclopedic enough, but that's a matter of taste/judgment perhaps. If it's good enough, great; if not, I'm moving on to the next stack in the archipelago. Well, I'll do that anyway. Drmies (talk) 22:13, 7 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Once again, "run-on" doesn't mean "convoluted". "... no product of the American education system could have understood it" means "convoluted". "run-on" is described in the run-on sentence article, and you can't communicate with a grammar teacher when confusing the two. Art LaPella (talk) 06:17, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • I bow to your immensity, oh CoM... It IS indeed an island with birds on it! And they are tasty too: reportedly they ate porridge with penguin there. Oh, after CoM's expansions the article got a bit longer, with a better lead. nudge nudge... Drmies (talk) 00:58, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ha, I wish I could take credit for the box. Well, I could, but I'd be lying. What is the problem with the images? I really don't know what to do, and to my untrained eye they look fine. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 01:46, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • The person who wrote the entry on Moss for the website used as a source throughout the article has an undergraduate degree in music and is a high school teacher. I'm not sure why we are using this source, as this person is not an expert in history or African-American studies. Awadewit (talk) 09:11, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    • It's on a site directed by Quintard Taylor, probably the leading authority on Washington state African American history. The article is used for simple, uncontroversial facts (what organizations he worked for; what political offices he held); this is the sort of thing it would be hard to get wrong. It's the kind of facts we would readily take from (for example) a newspaper profile. I believe nothing statedcited from that source in the article gets into the realm of the even mildly controversial, so I did not search for an unimpeachable source. I've seem most of these facts stated in a recent exhibit that has appeared at the Washington State Historical Museum and now at the Northwest African American History Museum, but there seems to be no catalogue for the exhibit, and museum wall texts don't seem like a convenient citation. - Jmabel | Talk 15:40, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    • Nonetheless, I will look for further citation. - Jmabel | Talk 17:45, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • I've now added considerably more citation to the article. Unfortunately, so far I haven't found anything as synoptic as the article I originally used, and that article's cited sources are not available online. I've asked a librarian friend if she can help me track them down. I've now cited certainly reliable sources for the recall and appointment; I haven't found anything other than my original source that mentions his original unsuccessful 1969 run. For whatever it's worth, I've seen campaign literature from that run, but don't have it at hand to cite. Two such items can actually be seen in the background (to his right) in Commons:File:Harold Moss 07A.jpg. - Jmabel | Talk 23:18, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest a shortener hook of 185 characters:
  • Church of the East is a disambiguation page. That is, if a reader clicks it, he will have to guess which link will lead to a description of this church. After reading the article, I think it should be encoded as Church of the East. Is that right? Art LaPella (talk) 03:57, 7 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Actually Yohannan Sulaqa splitted in two the Church of East: so to say that the true Church of East is the Chaldean Catholic Church is a POV and to say that it is the Assyrian Church of the East is a POV. I used Church of East to be NPOV. Anyway I've edited Article Church of the East and put as first meaning the Church before the splittings (that happened in 1553, 1681, 1830, 1968) so the problem is solved. Perhaps the following: ... that singer Ray LaMontagne was nominated for five 2005 Boston Music Awards, including Best Act, Best Male Vocalist, Best Male Singer/Songwriter, Best Album for his debut CD, and Best Song for "Trouble"? He was indeed nominated for 5 awards (from which he won 3 awards). I have added another source (a local newspaper) citing the two additional nominations. If you feel the hook would be better off noting the three wins, as opposed to the five nominations, we can do that. I hope this helps! Please let me know if I can do anything else to help. -Whataworld06 (talk) 18:34, 7 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Not necessarily. In parts perhaps, although that's more the table featuring her side projects that the opening prose counted for DYK or the article in general. There is one link to her website which actually includes a video of the not particularly controversial performance mentioned. The discography is equally heavily (if not more heavily) reliant on newspaper articles such as this and this and this, television shows such as this and this entry on the website of Snow Patrol who have absolutely no reason to be mentioning someone like Hannigan as they are not associated with her and are much more well-known than her. I also don't know what you mean about the personal blog in MySpace as I cannot recall using one. The link you've provided me with just leads to the general site which only features in the discography as an external link – I presume this wouldn't be a problem with musicians especially considering it has its own template. This is a very unexpected early review which seems to have been done in haste – I also was not informed of the problem on my talk page. I know what it's like to review so don't mean to be critical of reviewers but if I can pick this many holes in a point then something must surely be amiss somewhere? --➨♀♂Candlewicke ST # :) 19:33, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • "A shrimp is very similar to a fish"? I wouldn't say so. Shrimp are much smaller than a typical fish and only very very distantly related (a man is closer to a starfish, and you wouldn't call them similar). The only thing they have in common is their habitat and the fact that one tends to eat the other (and never the other way around). --Stemonitis (talk) 06:47, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I found it interesting that 90% of the entire catch of this type of shrimp comes from the waters off just four counties of Ireland. That's a pretty small area ... perhaps a hook (no pun intended) could be made from that? Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 23:23, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The reason why I included the mention about the estates was to stress that the surroundings were at least as alien to the rescuers as they were to the rescued under German occupation. But perhaps, this fact could be phrased in another way? --Poeticbent talk 23:46, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't understand what you're saying. Can you explain? --Dweller (talk) 17:03, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm saying that the couple rented the estates only because of war and only for a time being. They were forced out from their own home which was somewhere else. So, they themselves were a displaced people in a way, but please read the article for more info. --Poeticbent talk 17:25, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. Personally, I think you're trying to pack too much into a very brief hook. Stick to the main point? --Dweller (talk) 12:49, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Length and history verified. At the moment there's only an inline citation (ref [1]) for the >20 refugees from the Warsaw Ghetto. The 30 referred to in the hook evidently includes the nine mentioned in the first paragraph of "The rescuers and the rescued", which are mentioned in ref [3]. An inline citation with ref [3] after that sentence is needed, therefore. Also, for info, ref [2] is currently a deadlink for me. Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 23:17, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Thanks for the attention to detail. Ref-links are checked and updated. Inline citations extended downward to include all people mentioned. --Poeticbent talk 07:31, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • / Well, both meet the length criteria, and have been rated "Start"-class, but I'm concerned about the degree of padding and arguably unencyclopaedic detail in Kevin's article. • I think I'm going to claim joint credit on this, as the original was a very sloppy cut n'paste (from PD sources), with poor links, categories, missing the 2007 reprint etc. Mostly rewritten, & now much longer. It meets the criteria, but don't take my word for it. Johnbod (talk) 21:37, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Nicely done, Johnbod. You certainly deserve a copy of UpdatedDYK on your usertalkpage for this. --PFHLai (talk) 23:58, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Why? Johnbod's contribution came after the first five days after article creation by Wikid77, and it's not a 5X expansion. --74.13.125.218 (talk) 02:32, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
According to this diff, most of the crucial passages are still the original wording of the PD document and cannot count towards the DYK character count. They are also direct quotations that should be attributed as such or completely reworded. Please finish the rewrite so this can be approved. Ottava Rima (talk) 00:12, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You can't tell that from this diff (which merely shows my changes - this is the updated one), and I wouldn't agree with that assessment myself, especially as regards "crucial" - the ones the same are the least crucial, I'd say, except to textual scholars. I'm not going to change them. They are mostly paraphrased, but not much. Johnbod (talk) 00:57, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Crucial for having 1,500 characters, that is. The PD text wouldn't count towards that. Just rewrite the sentences that haven't yet be changed and this can easily pass without any other concerns. It looks to be two halves (first two paragraphs) and two full paragraphs (last two) that need alterations or direct citations. Ottava Rima (talk) 03:13, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Scratch the above, on re-examining, most of it has been altered enough to meet the character count. Ottava Rima (talk) 03:15, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the copyedit. Captured by whom? That is not clear in the article. Gatoclass (talk) 11:18, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • As I read it, she worked on the novel for many years in France then tried to re-enter her native England illegally and was jailed. She asked her husband, still in France, to send her the manuscript so he had to make assurances to French authorities about its content. The hook as written is not factually correct, if the article is to be believed. - Dravecky (talk) 16:48, 7 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • The Burneys both had to assure the French authorities, her husband by letter when he sent the manuscript and she when she received it. A British merchant also helped diffuse the situation in France. It is obviously a complicated situation that cannot actually be conveyed in a 200-word hook. Awadewit (talk) 09:16, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It's not the hook we're asking you to clarify, it's the article. There is no reason why you can't clearly explain the situation in the article, but as it stands it's very difficult to understand what happened. Gatoclass (talk) 11:17, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid I don't have time to revise this article right now. Consider this nom withdrawn. Awadewit (talk) 21:22, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
DYK has become Good Article review now? The hook's fine, the article meets all the criteria and it is a good deal more comprehensive, better written and better researched than most of the articles that appear. Yomanganitalk 11:43, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Actually both hook & the further explanation above are wrong; she was not in prison in France, or anywhere. I've amended the article slightly (the ref is online at Google books).
I don't think Doody's explanation in the "Introduction" is clear enough to clarify these questions, actually. I need to add information from her biography of Burney. As the nominator, I strongly suggest that this be withdrawn. Awadewit (talk) 12:48, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have watched the article from development and it passes every single DYK requirement. The questions about a section has little to bear on the hook and the content of the page. The above conversation is best left for the talk page. I also own the source used and have verified what is stated in the whole page (as I watched it created). ALT:"... that the husband of Frances Burney (pictured) had to assure the French that The Wanderer was apolitical before he could forward her the manuscript? Johnbod (talk) 12:40, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is not how I read Doody's "Introduction" - I think he sent a letter with the manuscript. These kinds of questions are why I would like to do more research. Awadewit (talk) 12:48, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
"...which [he] lovingly packed up, having first obtained the necessary permission from the Police Office..." Doody xi. Johnbod (talk) 14:53, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The account still doesn't make sense. "Burney had not originally intended to work on the novel while in England, but during a long wait for her ship at Dunkirk, she had decided to continue working on it." Dunkirk is part of France, not of England. Also, was she working on the novel in Dunkirk before she was captured by the British in 1812, or after? The chronology needs to be made clear before we promote the article. Gatoclass (talk) 04:51, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The article is as clear as it can be without additional research, as I have stated. I continue to think that this nom should be withdrawn if the reviewers think that more should be done to the article. The history of the composition of The Wanderer is complicated, having taken place over fourteen years. I have presented it in as straightforward a manner as possible, trying to following the history given in the introduction to the Oxford edition. Clearly this is not enough for a DYK article. I do not have the time tonight to read the relevant sections of Doody's biography on Burney. Awadewit (talk) 07:23, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why April Fools Day? It's not funny. And the American John Adams is not that famous outside the U.S. --74.13.125.218 (talk) 03:59, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Articles created/expanded for Darwin Day 2009 (February 12)

  • Image is of S. umbrosa, the species subject of most of Darwin's carnivory studies.
The article only says that he erroneously believed them to be allied to the sundew family. This, I guess, requires an intuitive leap for those of us not versed in botany. Also, I support holding till 2/12 so the creator can turn more of those redlinks blue. Daniel Case (talk) 20:26, 7 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

the chocolataires article on the "did you know?" for today makes reference to the late 18th century when it should obviously be late 19th century.
