Not receiving any feedback on new article for submission
Hi there,

A colleague of mine has submitted a new article for submission at the following URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_creation/Regional_Strategic_Analysis_and_Knowledge_Support_System_%28ReSAKSS%29

When it was first submitted, she received an automated email from Wikipedia thanking her for her submission followed by another email several days later saying that the article had been declined. She then did a major rewrite of the article and resubmitted on May 10, 2012 and has yet to receive any notification from Wikipedia or its editors that the article had been resubmitted or was subject to another review process (i.e., no communication whatsoever).

What needs to be done in order to alert someone from the community to re-review the article for approval? The talk page contains the article text itself so I didn't want to include any comments there and potentially interfere with the body of the article.

Many thanks,
Pete ReSAKSS (talk)

Design recognition

Hello,

Is it possible to add a new header like "Programmer" or "Planner" to the Infobox on the following page?

The_Bank_of_Kentucky_Center

Full disclosure: I work as a consultant for Brailsford & Dunlavey, a company based in Washington, DC. Recently I've noticed a lot of firms we work with and compete against are listed throughout Wikipedia for facility projects they have designed, managed, etc. They are listed in Infoboxes on facility pages like the one above.

There are a lot of companies that are not architects, engineers, or contractors. But they are the ones that plan facilities like ballparks, arenas, and stadiums. They hand off architectural programs to designers. They determine whether a project is feasible to begin with.

Does a "programmer" or "planner" tag for facility-based Infoboxes already exist? And if it doesn't, would the Wikipedia community find it useful enough to merit adding?

Sincerely,

B.J. Rudell — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bjrudell (talkcontribs) 02:01, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No, sorry. Arcandam (talk) 02:32, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That infobox is at Template:Infobox stadium; do the personnel parameters there cover what you're recommending? If not, you could post to its talk page. Dru of Id (talk) 02:34, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"This is a tool icon"

Hi. A few times I have seen a message "This is a tool icon" on Wikipedia pages, which sits at the extreme right edge of the window, and doesn't scroll with the rest of the content, like this:

http://img835.imageshack.us/img835/3347/thisisatoolicon2.png

The article depicted here is List of jōyō kanji. The "tool icon" thing does not always reproducibly display on this page; sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. I saw it one one other page, but I can't remember which one. I do not see it on any sites other than Wikipedia. Using WIn 7 and IE9. Anyone got any idea what this is about? 86.167.19.246 (talk) 02:25, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Scroll up a bit. The header is called "Strange tool icon on "World's largest universities" page". Arcandam (talk) 02:30, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, OK, thanks. Actually I searched Google, yesterday I think it was, and found nothing, but just now I tried again and found this. 86.167.19.246 (talk) 02:33, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Where has the biliteracy page gone ?

When I search for biliteracy I am directed to literacy which is NOT THE SAME. Wiki tells me that there is a page on biliteracy but every link goes back to literacy ?

Any ideas

The page was redirected to literacy with this edit in 2009. No edit summary was given, but I'm not exactly sure what to do with the article. It was in unbelievably poor shape when it was redirected and was full of original research and instructions/guides. I'd like to see another editor's thought but I think at a minimum the first paragraph "Biliteracy is the state of being literate in two or more languages. To be biliterate has a stronger and more specified connotation than the claim of being simply bilingual. This is because the term 'literate' indicates the subject is not only able to communicate verbally in a second language, but is also able read and write successfully in this second language." should be restored if links can be found to back up the difference between biliteracy and bilingual. Ryan Vesey Review me! 04:09, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If you would like to edit the page yourself, the link to edit it is here. Just make sure you follow Wikipedia's verifiability policy, which states that verifiability, and not truth, is required. I understand that you are a lecturer at a University so you may know if something is true, but we cannot accept your word for it unless it is backed up by reliable sources. Ryan Vesey Review me! 04:12, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Help from experts would be great -The edit looks like a deliberate attempt to eliminate biliteracy as a category

Help from the academic world is needed -The edit looks like a deliberate attempt to eliminate biliteracy as a category as there is no mention of bilingualism or reading and writing in two or more languages at all which is what most of the worlds population is now seeking to do. Simply because a page has problems does not mean it should have the entire category eliminated? Certainly biliteracy requires its own Wikipedia page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.216.108.12 (talk) 04:25, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with you, have you considered creating the content yourself? Ryan Vesey Review me! 04:27, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Please assume good faith. From Ryan's comments above, the article was very poor, and the editor may have thought that it was unsalvageable. --ColinFine (talk) 10:05, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dysfunctional navbox - Template:Foam scales and properties

Resolved

Template:Foam scales and properties's show/hide function does not work. I am insufficiently skilled with templates to solve the problem. Peter (Southwood) (talk): 08:23, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Navbox was not designed to include a normal table like that. It is supposed to look like this, and you fill in the parameters. -- King of ♠ 09:19, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have looked for style guidance as to whether this is a problem, but have had no success, probably looking in the wrong part of the maze. Is it neccessary or desirable to change the non-standard navbox so that it takes up less space of the bottom of the article, or is it OK to leave it as it is? (it tens to look a bit over the other navboxes, but for all I know it may be perfectly acceptable. I have found that there is at least one other navbox to the same pattern. I don't know what the creator was trying to achieve with this format, so I am hesitant to rush in and change it in unless it is deprecatedPeter (Southwood) (talk): 20:27, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

India Indians versus Native American Indians

I don't know why so many authors have a hard time distinguishing between India Indians and Native American Indians. I am a highly educated NATIVE AMERICAN INDIAN (CHEROKEE). I am NOT an India Indian. I know this is so confusing for many people, especially for those who are geographically challenged. Please respect both groups of peoples. When you talk about (generic) Indians, NO ONE knows just who you are talking about and you only confuse readers. Remember...India Indians and Native American Indians. Totally different people. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jelitch (talkcontribs) 09:20, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There is very little anybody can do with a generalised moan like this. I experience no confusion between these two huge collections of different peoples. Is there some particular article you want to see changed? --ColinFine (talk) 10:07, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe Jelitch is referring to today's featured article, which refers to the early inhabitants of what is now Florida as "Paleo-Indians". Regarding those two articles, I sympathise with his views. Maproom (talk) 10:24, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Paleo-Indian is a common term in the academic literature. Many Americans refer to themeselves as Indians and many tribes use the word, as does the OP. We can't do much about this except take an NPOV stance and use the terms commonly used without choosing between them, although perhaps I've misunderstood you. Note that his only mainspace edit is this [1] which I shall now revert. Dougweller (talk) 12:44, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've now posted to his talk page saying his post here isn't clear and explaining why I've reverted him at the article. Dougweller (talk) 12:53, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't necessarily agree that "we can't do much about this". I don't think the article title is carved in stone. The very first line uses the alternative term "Paleoamerican". But I think this issue is better handled at Talk:Paleo-Indians, Talk:Indigenous peoples of the Americas, or related article talk pages. Cresix (talk) 15:20, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, the title. That's another issue, I meant we can't avoid the word. Dougweller (talk) 19:36, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Article "1961 Indian annexation of Goa"

I had made two main contributions to this article (with several slight changes now and then), in particular to Chapter 6 ("Internment and repatriation of POWs"). Such contributions were duly supported by references. However, I have noticed that they were deleted from the article and the following notice was sent to me:

This is your last warning. The next time you violate Wikipedia's no original research policy by inserting unpublished information or your personal analysis into an article, as you did at 1961 Indian annexation of Goa, you may be blocked from editing without further notice. NOTE: I noticed that a lot of your inputs on the aforementioned page are violations of our above policy, as well as WP:Neutral point of view and WP:Verifiability. Last warning, if you continue to do this, I guarantee you that you will be BLOCKED very soon. Take heed~! Dave ♠♣♥♦™№1185©♪♫® 00:57, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

I do not understand why I am being warned this way. As I said, both my contributions were duly documented. They were as follows:

Contribution 1: The Portuguese actor José Manuel Mendes was one of the Portuguese soldiers held captive by the Indian army following the annexation of Goa. Almost fifty years later, he spoke in an interview of the incredibly harsh conditions of detention. In poverty-ridden India, no priority would be given to feeding war prisoners, so food in the camp was extremely scarce and poor, virtually limited to one bowl of rice per day. Then, all of a sudden, the numerous errant dogs and cats in the area practically disappeared and, by coincidence or not, the detainees' meals began to include meat.[1]

Contribution 2: After the already existing text: In one incident, recounted by Lt. Francisco Cabral Couto (now retired general), an attempt was made on 17 January, by some of the prisoners to escape the camp. The attempt was foiled, and the Portuguese officers in charge of the escapees were threatened with court martial and execution by the Indians. This situation was defused by the timely intervention of a Jesuit military chaplain.[2], I added the following text:

However, the Indians did not waste the opportunity to exert a cowardly reprisal. According to the Portuguese journalist Luís Pedro Cabral[3], an Indian lieutenant attacked the Portuguese Captain Carlos Azeredo with a stick, yelling "Run! Run!", to which the latter replied "Vá bardamerda!" (Go to hell). Three Indian officers began to beat him so brutally with the butts of their rifles that Azeredo would certainly die, lest another Portuguese military had not advised him in Portuguese (which the Indians did not understand) not to resist.

Although in fact I cannot produce evidence of Mr José Manuel Mendes' interview to Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (for Contribution #1), I can at any moment send a scan of journalist Luís Pedro Cabral's article in "Visão História" magazine to support my text in Contribution #2.

I do not see why the statements of an Indian officer in his alleged memoirs should be more credible than the statements of Portuguese officers in a magazine. Namaacha (talk) 10:02, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I do not know anything abou5t the topic, or about this dispute. But I notice the word "cowardly" in the material you say you added. Evaluative and emotive words like cowardly are NEVER acceptable in Wikipedia unless they are directly attributable to (and probably quoting) independent reliable sources. I suspect that this part of what the editor meant by "your personal analysis". --ColinFine (talk) 10:11, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Second opinions requested

I started this page mostly out of personal curiosity, and because it's the sort of thing that I would like to read about. However, now that I've got a few entries, I'm concerned that the list may be trivial, in the sense that the entries are only linked by being terms that have fallen into disfavour or obscurity. It's also unlikely to ever be complete. I wouldn't move it to the mainspace until it was significantly longer, but I'd like a second opinion before investing that time/energy. Matt Deres (talk) 12:27, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting concept. I think it could qualify under Wikipedia:Lists#List articles's Glossary criteria. I'd feel relatively safe moving it into article space. If it ends up getting deleted it's no big deal though, just retain a copy in your userspace just in case. Equazcion (talk) 12:31, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It looks interesting and useful enough to me. I wouldn't worry too much about completion, lots of articles are not complete and may never be completed, but are still worth having. Peter (Southwood) (talk): 16:25, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There is a similar list relating to disability here, there may be some "operlapping" content you could use. Roger (talk) 14:20, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think it looks fine. I don't see any reason why that shouldn't be in article space. A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 14:47, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I moved it. It was a crime to leave it in userspace. Hope the OP doesn't mind. Equazcion (talk) 14:54, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Need help adding header text to edit instructions

Resolved

At WP:RSN, we want to take the header instructions listed here: Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard/Header and repeat them on edit the page when an editor creates a new section. By header instructions, I'm referring to the text beginning with "When posting, please be sure to include any of the following information that..." and ending with "This is not the place for content disputes which should be directed to the article talk page or associated WikiProject" IOW, the content inside (and including) the yellow/orange sections. So, when an editor clicks on this link, they'll see the header instructions. How do I do this? Can anyone do this or do I need an admin? A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 13:07, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

See WP:EDITNOTICE. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 13:16, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. It looks like you need an admin to do this. Are there admins reading this who can help us out? A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 13:25, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 16:35, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

BTW, if we decide to change the header instructions, is that something we can do ourselves or do we still need an admin? A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 16:58, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am not sure if you need an admin or not, try editing Template:Editnotices/Page/Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard, that is where the notice is at. GB fan 18:55, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No, I can't. And looks and acts weird. The bottom order section is missing when I look at it. There is an Edit tab. When I click on Edit, it goes into edit mode but the textbox is readonly. It looks like we'll need an admin if we want to change the text. OK, thanks, again. A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 14:54, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Help with uploading a movie poster under fair use

I've been doing some work with the article "We Shall Overcome (film)". I would like to have the movie poster http://elholms.dk/formmail/filmaftalen/img/4458_poster_droemmen.jpg uploaded under fair use and displayed in the infobox in the article. The copyright holder of the image are "Zentropa Entertainments11" and "Nordisk Film Biografdistribution". Of course it is impossible to find a free movie poster to the article because all movie posters for this film is copyrighted. I am not yet able to upload the picture because I am not a comfirmed user. I hope that somebody please will help me. (The movie poster that is uploaded could be called "Drommen - We Shall Overcome" because the original title of the film is "Drommen" and the English title of the film is "We Shall Overcome"). --Moviedk (talk) 13:48, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The word 'free'

Hi, I have a question to do with the name Wikipedia The Free Encyclopedia. Does the word 'free' refer to the freedom of speech or the fact that it can be used free of charge?

Thank you in advance.

MG — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.8.139.79 (talk) 13:56, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It has to do with the fact that all of the content in the encyclopedia is released into the public domain under a WP:CC-BY-SA license. If you want to use content from Wikipedia, even for commercial purposes, you are free to do so (as long as you provide attribution). Ryan Vesey Review me! 14:29, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
While your intent was correct, your statement is very wrong. If something is released into the public domain, that means that anyone can use it for any purpose without any restrictions. Something released under the CC-BY-SA license, on the other hand, does have restrictions: most importantly, you must attribute the original source (that's the "BY") and you must allow others to reuse your version under the same terms (that's the "SA"). BTW, the "CC" refers to the set of 6 different but related licenses and the organization that created them. Anomie 20:25, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The correct short answer is "Both", it is used in the freedom of speech and free of charge senses. Roger (talk) 14:16, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Topic bans

Is there a way to see whether a user has been topic banned by looking at their userpage or something related to it? I see these various lists of bans, including indefinite bans and other kinds of "restrictions" (including topic bans), but (a) you'd have to review the list to see if the user is listed AND (b) there doesn't seem to be any automatic updating of those lists - they appear to be quite incomplete.--Bbb23 (talk) 18:44, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think there's any way to do that, aside from combing through their talk page history. Topic bans aren't implemented in any technical way. Equazcion (talk) 20:03, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That seems wrong to me. I guess I'll have to think about how to propose a change so one can more easily see if an editor is restricted other than a block. Should it be the policy pump or somewhere else that I raise this? (Has it been raised before?)--Bbb23 (talk) 03:17, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It should probably go to VP proposals. I don't know if it's been raised before. I think it might be seen as inviting the community to participate in enforcing user sanctions, so I have a feeling it wouldn't do that well. I've been wrong before though. I still see ANI on my watchlist. I'm running a script that does some stuff with the new feature though, not sure if that could be affecting things (I doubt it would). Try un-watching and re-watching it maybe? Equazcion (talk) 19:53, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

CSD A7

To prove an articles notability, you usually need to provide a refrence to a reliable site. I provide at least one, sometimes even two. Still they are deleted under A7. Can an admin please have look at my deleted articles, you will notice they have references. Please give me an example of what I could've dome for them not to be deleted under A7.--Deathlaser :  Chat  19:56, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You should read Wikipedia:Notability in full, it states at the top of the page that subjects can be considered notable when they "have gained sufficiently significant attention by the world at large" (emphasis mine). One or two reliable sources generally does not constitute significant coverage. I cannot view the deleted articles in question so cannot comment on the sources specifically. Regards. (I realise now that WP:A7 makes it clear that is is independent of the standard notability guideline, but still..) Яehevkor 21:00, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at them, MENOG only links to the company website, so thats no good, 6PE had a few sources, but which show it is not what the articles said it is and Detail fabrication just links to a couple of yellow pages style directory sites, no good either--Jac16888 Talk 21:12, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sources written in other languages

Is it acceptable to cite a source if it is written wholly in a language other than English? Another editor has made additions to an article citing sources written in Spanish. As I cannot read Spanish, I personally cannot check the veracity of the claims. PaleCloudedWhite (talk) 21:29, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It is acceptable, but if there is an English alternative it's better. Google translate is usually sufficient for verifying claims in non-english sources, it will manage Spanish just fine--Jac16888 Talk 21:34, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I've never used google translate before (I hadn't realised it's not a program you have to download), and it did manage the translation just fine (albeit a bit clunky in places...) As a consequence, I've removed the source as it didn't support the claim. PaleCloudedWhite (talk) 22:22, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Is there a specific venue on en.WP where a user can request verification of non-English sources by other users who can read the language concerned? Roger (talk) 14:55, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Technically you can tag the source with Template:Source need translation, but speaking as basically the only person who has anything to do with that cat, I can tell that you one of two things will happen. If the source is in a language that google translation can handle well enough to be intelligible I will probably add a link to the google translation on the article page, and if it's not, well nothing really happens--Jac16888 Talk 14:59, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I was hoping there is a page somewhere on en.WP where a user can post: "In article "Foo" please verify reference number 14, a news website in Russian" then a Russian speaking wikignome does so and reports back "Verified" or "Not Verified". Where is the correct place to propose and discuss setting up such a facility? Roger (talk) 15:12, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This question regards the entry on Quanah Parker, Comanche chief.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quanah_Parker

About his birth, the entry reads, "Nadua and Nocona's first child was Quanah (Fragrance), born in the Wichita Mountains. The exact birthplace is debated, but Quanah visited what he understood to be his birthplace at Laguna Sabinas (Cedar Lake) in Gaines County, Texas in his later years.

That second sentence adds a note of doubt. The claim that Gaines County, Texas is Parker's birthplace has been often repeated and stems from a sketchy account in a 1963 book by Clyde and Grace Jackson. However, many scholars, authors and historians now believe that Quanah Parker was born in Oklahoma, near the Wichita Mountains. This fact is well-documented in books footnoted as Nos. 3 and 19 in the Wikipedia article, and in the book by Jo Ann Powell Exley, listed under "Recommended Reading."

As a result, I believe the entry should read something like, "An early account claims that Parker's birthplace was in Texas, but many scholars, authors and historians now believe that Quanah Parker was born in Oklahoma, near the Wichita Mountains."

Thanks for listening. I just think this bears clarification. Lstclaire (talk) 05:40, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Heading added and duplicate question removed
All information in Wikipedia is supposed to be verifiable. Therefore phrases like "many scholars ... believe" should never be used in Wikipedia without a reference to a reliable source that says that "many scholars ... believe" whatever it is. (Even a reference that makes the specific claim is not enough to verify the "many").
Much better would be to say something like "however writers such as Gwynne and Exley argue that ... " with proper references after the names "Gwynne" and "Exley". You can add a reference to the Exley book; and you share the existing reference to to the Gwynne book by naming it. See WP:Referencing for beginners.
If you don't feel confident in doing this, please make your suggestion at Talk:Quanah Parker. --ColinFine (talk) 10:01, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Carlos Fuentes infobox on main page

I can't make the bottom part of the Carlos Fuentes infobox (the URL etc.) display properly, which is unfortunate as he's on the main page. Normally I'd assume this is me being a bonehead, but other editors appear to have also tried and failed. I tried posting at Template:Infobox Writer but got no response. Where should I go for help next? Cheers, Khazar2 (talk) 07:22, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed the URL (it's long though so it still doesn't look "neat", not sure if there's much to do about that). What other problem was there? Equazcion (talk) 07:28, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hm, perhaps it's just a problem with the template. I'd been trying to reduce it to something like Official site but couldn't make it work. The transclusion of "Influences" made me wonder if the bottom of the template was broken in some way. Khazar2 (talk) 07:37, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The template does seem to make something like that impossible right now. Its documentation actually says that (Template:Infobox writer). Only the bare URL can be displayed. Equazcion (talk) 07:43, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Categories and violation of WP:ORDINAL

Category:C programming language family (how is a real Wikipedia link formed for this link?) violates WP:ORDINAL ("single-digit whole numbers from zero to nine are spelled out in words"):

"This category has the following 3 subcategories, out of 3 total."

Is there a way to change it? --Mortense (talk) 07:47, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Place a colon before Category to link to it: :Category:C programming language family. ORDINAL refers to how digits are displayed in article text. It doesn't apply to the way category listings are displayed, or any other feature of Wikipedia's interface. Equazcion (talk) 07:56, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
What is the difference between normal articles and categories listings? I thought the latter was just some semi-automatic generated page, like a template that applies to an entire page? --Mortense (talk) 08:05, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That's exactly what category pages are -- semi-auto-generated listings, while articles are written entirely by editors. You answered your own question :) The numbers are generated automatically too. The only part that's not is some info at the top describing the category's purpose. Equazcion (talk) 08:09, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Why doesn't the Wikipedia Manual of Style apply to automatically generated pages? It makes no difference for a normal reader how a page is called into existence. --Mortense (talk) 09:06, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Would you expect a poet to list his works via rhymes and cadence? Categories are a utility, an index, a way of organizing articles so they're easier to find. They're not meant to have a particular writing style; it's unnecessary. Equazcion (talk) 09:18, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Also, Categories are maintained by the Mediawiki software, which lies outside Wikipedia and is used for thousands of other wikis. There is no reason why it should conform in its presentation to the MOS of one particular wiki. If you care enough about the issue you could ask for the software to be changed: start at WP:VPT. --ColinFine (talk) 10:06, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't necessarily need to conform. It could have options for how it generates the output (like many templates have, for example, convert) --109.57.242.177 (talk) 10:50, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's really ironic that you claim "no one is willing to help there is no one to contact" on this page, because this is exactly where you can contact people who are willing to help. However, if you arrive here with a hostile attitude it is perfectly reasonable for others to respond apropriately. Roger (talk) 08:48, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That user asked for help further up this page and was given some links about notability etc. I can understand getting frustrated at having to read through that stuff. Unfortunately, creating an article (one that won't get deleted immediately) isn't quite as simple as people tend to think before they actually try doing it. The one I created for this user is not likely to survive unless it's expanded soon. Such is the price of wanting to keep the encyclopedia somewhat reliable -- otherwise we would just let anyone add whatever they wanted. Equazcion (talk) 08:58, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

(question pasted from this revision contributed by Imsobers) -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 11:22, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You would need to establish your notability (see Wikipedia:Notability (people)). That means you need to show that published reliable sources like newspapers or credible websites have written about you. -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 11:26, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There is nothing "official" about an article's existence, it is allowed to exist only if it satisfies a number of criteria, the first of which is WP:Notability. An article about a person is a biography, not a "profile" - Wikipedia is not a social networking website. Your word "holder" also means nothing because nobody owns or controls any of the articles here - See WP:OWN. Roger (talk) 11:34, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Account/identification problem

A Wikimedian I know in real life and whose identity is quite certain for me has a trouble with his account on English Wikipedia (User:Avalikarvamus). Everything is fine with his account in Estonian Wikipedia, he just has forgotten his password on en.wp. The problem is, his confirmation e-mail in English Wikipedia was on a domain that has been deleted some time ago (due to a recent reform of .ee domains in Estonia). Unfortunately, he has not united all his accounts into a global one, and he cannot do it now. Wikipedia login page does not provide any other ways to prove one's identity besides e-mail, Help:Email confirmation does not deal with such problems and it seems nobody has read its talk page since 2011 anyway. I'm a Wikipedian since 2004 and an admin on et.wp, yet I haven't run into such a problem myself, so the only advice I could give him was to write on some bureaucrat's user page and ask what could be done. Any better recommendations? --Oop (talk) 20:26, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The English account only has 46 edits. Is he willing to have the existing account renamed by a bureaucrat and start a new account with the name? http://toolserver.org/~quentinv57/sulinfo/Avalikarvamus shows etwiki has 22 edits and commonswiki has 36. If he brings one of them above 46 then he can create a unified account (the right goes to the wiki with the most edits) and use it to request usurpation of the English account at Wikipedia:Changing username/Usurpations. He may have to give some evidence that it's his account in order to get a bureaucrat to rename it when it has 46 edits. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:26, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I'll pass the advice. This should be easy. (If I was told to do 800 new articles and 17,000 edits on en.wp, now that would be a problem.) --Oop (talk) 09:23, 21 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You can edit most articles yourself. Read WP:HEP for details. If the article is protected so that you can't edit it, ask for help on the article's talk page. Cresix (talk) 22:21, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
But if you are talking about a category, you can only edit the text at the top in that way: an article is made to belong to a category by adding a line to the article itself. However, I can't find either an article or a category called "Human reflex responses", so I'm not sure just what you are talking about. --ColinFine (talk) 08:34, 21 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

IP address

I received a note saying I committed vandalism on a toads section or something. I had never even seen that page before. It must have merely been someone using the same IP address. Where was the note? There's nothing on your talk page. If you were not logged in, then yes, it might have applied to someone else that had that IP address at a different time. You can avoid that problem by always logging into your account to edit. RudolfRed (talk) 00:15, 21 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You can only be sure to prevent it by being logged in or having a static IP address with no other users. I see your account was created two minutes before posting here. If you check the "Remember me (up to 180 days)" field at login then you should automatically be logged in when you revisit Wikipedia from that computer and browser. recognizable logo used in Wikipedia:WikiProject Furry and Portal:Furry

hello. File:Furry blue paw logo.png is derived from the WikiFur logo, yet is used as the furry WikiProject template logo, and the logo for the furry portal portalbox. this logo is widely seen on wikipedia, and its use as a logo for this wikiproject and portal seems to me like advertising for WikiFur. we have other free images, like this one, for instance, that are not connected to any website. why use an image "derived from the paw in WikiFur's logo"? it seems to me that since these logos are widely seen, they should not promote any site. i looked for an answer at WP:SPAM, but was unable to find one there. thanks for looking into this.

-badmachine 08:29, 21 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Is there really a community of people who will recognise the logo and say "ah, this is something to do with WikiFur?" Since I have never heard of WikiFur before, it certainly isn't advertising to me. --ColinFine (talk) 08:39, 21 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
yes, it is immediately recognizable within the furry fandom as the WikiFur logo, but there are other furry sites that could be promoted instead. why WikiFur in particular, or for that matter, any site? -badmachine 08:52, 21 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

mw:Help:Extension:ParserFunctions##titleparts is for subpages so it is based on slashes as separators. For spaces you can use string templates but it's not elegant. For example , or to work for a larger set of characters in the page name. Before I "go live"

Dear Wikipedia, I have reedited my article and want to go live again, but have a few questions; 1) When I last went live, my name appeared online before the subject name, which of course was very embarrassing. Why did this happen, and how can I avoid it happening again? 2) When I press “Show preview”, the box on the top right that shows my subjects name, birth place and website, is missing other bits of information that I intended it to contain (ie “medium”, “active” and “instruments”. Why is this? 3) Also when I press “Show preview”, the “Categories” do not appear at the bottom. Will they appear when I go live with the article, or have I made an error? Thank you very much for your kind help. Maya Frida Barr (talk) 10:25, 21 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It helps a lot when you supply us a link to the draft that you're talking about so that we can look at it and give accurate answers. I believe that you're referring to User:Maya Frida Barr/sandbox and I'll base my answers on that assumption. 1) When you last put an article up, you must have put it on your user page and not in the main article space of Wikipedia. 2) Not all infoboxes have the fields that you want. The template for Infobox Person has different fields from, for example, Infobox Corporation. You can't just add fields and expect them to show up. Those fields have to be present in the infobox template that you're using. For example, the infobox that you're trying to use Template:Infobox actor (which is actually just a redirect to Template:Infobox person) doesn't have a "medium" field. Therefore, it doesn't show up. 3) The categories are commented out. I did that about 10 days ago since your sandbox draft was showing up in the "live" categories. This shouldn't be done. If you move the article to the main Wikipedia article space, you can remove the comments that are now preventing the categories from showing up. Dismas|(talk) 10:33, 21 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The tag on the article is a conflict of interest notice. The policy states that the subject of the article or people close to the subject have to be careful when editing the article, in case they change the point of view, which is where the neutral point of view policy comes in. COI in editing Wikipedia:

I am working on editing a bio, however, one of the main editors cites that I have conflict of interest, and does not allow the changes. All I am trying to do is either add new applicable facts to the bio or change information that is incorrect. Technically, according to your guidelines anyone "affiliated" in anyway with the subject of a BOLP would have a COI. However, why should the subject of a BOLP have to allow incorrect information or lack of information in his/her bio. Or for that matter why should one-sided statements be allowed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.27.144.9 (talk) 18:16, 21 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The issue is not the correcting of incorrect information. The issue is how we know whether or not the information is correct. What is needed is independent verification (see Wikipedia:Verifiability) from a reliable source (see Wikipedia:Reliable sources). Also, the major problem with conflicts of interest is that your relationship to the subject affects how you will tend to write about the subject. You are more likely to use "purple prose" and other flowery language, tend over-emphasize information which casts a positive light on a subject, and tend to discount or ignore information which casts a negative light on a subject. That doesn't mean that your expertise or insight is entirely unwanted, it is just that care must be taken that your expertise and insight can be put to proper use in writing an encyclopedia article from a neutral point of view (see Wikipedia:Neutral point of view. For this reason, the best way to handle a conflict of interest is to use an article's "Talk page" to introduce information, properly backed-up with well-respected, reliable, published sources, for any changes you think need to be made. If you want to see the article correct (and we all want to see the article correct), then what you must do is start a thread at the talk page for the article in question, say what needs to be changed, and cite sources which verify what you think needs changing. That will result in better results than what you are trying to do now. --Jayron32 18:33, 21 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You're permitted to alter anything you want as long as it's an improvement, including editing or deleting references. Make sure to use descriptive edit summaries so people understand your intentions, and make sure you're keeping the article neutral (WP:NPOV) and reliably-sourced (WP:V). The answer is "yes", because Wikipedia is the encyclopedia that anyone can edit. However, I would recommend a couple of things. Particularly when removing references, I would carefully explain your rationalle in the talk page. Otherwise your edits are likely to be reverted. Second, unless you have a stable IP adress, I'd recommend you create a use account. It's free, easy, and anonymous. It also allows you to more easily build a level of trust within the community. Well, only adding links to one site falls under Wikipedia:Single-purpose accounts (note that that's not necessarily a bad thing). The 5th one threw up a warning tag, and they were all reverted. The link to an educational institution, for historical maps, should probably have been given more consideration, and discussion, but I don't see whether you answered the questions asked at your post here in November: are you affiliated with the university, specifically with the maps? and what value do you think they add to those articles? It doesn't matter about the source (i.e. from Flickr) but rather the licence. Any "free" image can be used anywhere on Wikipedia with a few notable exceptions (e.g. Bad Images). The important thing to remember is that you can't use a "fair use" image in userspace, but you can link to it. -=# Amos E Wolfe talk #=- 21:58, 21 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Commons image needs simple fix

I've got an image hosted at commons, File:US-O6 insignia.svg, that should be mirrored horizontally - cf. reference at [7]. I see no option to upload a new version of the file at commons, and I wouldn't know how to do so otherwise - uploading to commons is an unholy pain in the rear. If you go to the file page and click the link labelled "description page there", you'll end up at the commons file page. Scroll down a bit, and just above the heading "File usage on Commons" you should see a link "Upload a new version of this file". Failing that, here is a direct link to the "re-upload" page for that file. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:33, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

HARTSHORNE

I had terrible trouble trying to understand through all the jargon how to send a simple email to you. maybe now I have found the way maybe I haven't.

my surname is Hartshorne and in your 'article' you state the pronoucing of it is harts'horne well in all my life (over 60) my name has always been pronounced hart'shorne and whenever it's been pronounced as you state I and other members of my family or friends who know me well have corrected the pronouncing to HART'SHORNE.

It arises from hartshorne a smelling salt used years ago and referred to in Georgette Hayer novels!!! It is the horne of the hart. Hart being the animal and the horne being used. Therefore Hart'shorne. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.221.19.155 (talk) 13:10, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article is making the point is that that it is pronounced Harts'horne, without a /sh/ digraph. Are you trying to say that there should be a /sh/ sound? I rather doubt it. - David Biddulph (talk) 13:19, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think the problem is the use of an apostrophe to indicate the syllables, it can easily be confused with the posessive "hart's horn". Roger (talk) 06:25, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

LOC id doesn't work

For some reason the LOC id number here doesn't work properly in {LOC-image} template, leading to error page. Is it LOC's mismanagement? Brandmeistertalk 13:15, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Are you using this Wikicode: cwp.4a40928?--ukexpat (talk) 13:20, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That renders as , which leads to an error report when followed. It's possible that there's a problem with the handle server at the LOC. If it doesn't clear up I'd suggest submitting the erroror report requested by that error hanling page. LeadSongDog come howl! 13:59, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The URL for the image in question is http://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/ma0542/. LOC-image generates URLs beginning with http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.pnp.
LOC-image links to http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.pnp/prokc.21468 but redirects to http://www.loc.gov/pictures/resource/prokc.21468/ My SWAG is that the LOC changed their linking at some point.

Celebrity profile

Hi there

I've recently taken over responsibility for some of the social media and online content of a UK based celebrity.

He would like to expand his profile on Wikipedia, to include an up to date biography, including details of all of his TV credits to date.

Unfortunatlely, his celebrity status has attracted a lot of unwanted attention and sometimes downright vile abuse from internet trolls.

Could you let me know how I would be able to create a Wikipedia profile that cannot be edited or contributed to by any 3rd party without approval from myself?

This is purely to prevent any profile created from being hijacked by Internet trolls.

Thank you

Kind regards

No one controls a Wikipedia article or has approval rights - see WP:OWN - and because of your conflict of interest, you are strongly advised not to edit the article, but to use its talk page to suggest changes - please see WP:COI.--ukexpat (talk) 15:17, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
[conflict edit] Basically, you can't. This is Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia which anyone can edit; nobody "owns" or can control an article on a subject. If you need something corrected, leave a note on the talk page. Please be aware, though, that while of course we try to watch out for actual vandalism, you have a strong conflict of interest in this matter, and should not be attempting to edit the article yourself. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:19, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If the page is being vandalized, you can ask that it be protected. See WP:Protect. That won't give you control over the page, though, as the other answers say. RudolfRed (talk) 15:32, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
WP:COI does not state that you cannot edit when you have a conflict of interest— the section WP:COI compliance has a number of guidelines. Please browse through the entire guideline. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 16:17, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
We do wish to have the article (not "profile") accurate and well-referenced to independent reliable sources, and any help you can give to achieving this is welcome. We do not necessarily want the article to reflect how you, as the publicist, would like it to appear.— Preceding unsigned comment added by ColinFine (talkcontribs)

Okay, it looks like either you or someone else tried to add details regarding an agreement your company made with Disney, and those details weren't found in the reference provided, so they were removed. Wikipedia has policies against adding promotional or press-release-type material to articles, and also, against creating an account for the purpose of editing for a company. We've standardized on using the seal as the topmost image for nearly all college and university articles. I've argued for making the change you are requesting but I've had no success convincing my fellow editors. If you think you can change minds and develop a new consensus (or at least a consensus that we should make an exception for the UNF article), you're welcome to try! I don't think there is a tool, but if you had a directory of all the subpages (for example Category:Wikipedia Teahouse), you could copy and paste them into your watchlist using the "edit raw watchlist" feature. Someone calling herself "Realwoman" has deliberately re-written this article on two occasions and deleted relevant and truthful information as well as scientific research references and have repeatedly published the article claiming that I am a fraud, that the research was non-scientific and that it was never published in peer-review journals. She calls both myself and the primary researcher, dr. Eleonore Blaurock-Busch, quacks and links the article to a "quackery" reference in Wikipedia.

I wish to report her for doing malicious damage to our work, names and damaging the lives of untold numbers of children in India, as anyone who will read this article will dismiss the REAL trauma urnanium contamination has caused in India!

I wish to know what I can do to prevent her from making any further malicious changes to the article. I have deleted her changes to the article and reverted it to the original article published by the Punjabi journalist in 2010. Looking at the reasons, it would seem that the previous subject had nothing to do with the one I wish to create, which is about a geographical feature, and is red-linked to for example in Inca Point, Folger Rock, The Toe, and in particular, Harmony Point, which depends on this feature for additional information. I am unable to create this article, how this be achieved? Jan1naD (talkcontrib) 16:14, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've unprotected it, you will be able to create it now. Not sure exactly why protection was applied in the first place TBH, only two creations and the protection was added 6 months later for some reason, very odd--Jac16888 Talk 16:20, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Re my edit of Korematsu v. United States Section "Alleged Suppresion of Evidence by the Soliciter General."

In my original edit of the above section you ask for two citations. I have provided valid source information for the "citation needed" notes you inserted by showing the symbols <Ref> and 3 separate comprehensive footnotes. Now it won't accepte citations.

The instructions with regard to making changes and corrections arte hopelessly confusing. Please review my "citation" footnotes and straighten things out. It is a much needed edit and should not be ignored.

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Retofficer (talkcontribs) 18:17, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The references were formatted incorrectly - I have fixed them, but leave it for others to judge whether they are reliable.--ukexpat (talk) 19:13, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting differently titled but othewise identical versions of article

I'm a newbie and have created a bit of a mess. I've successfully created/posted a desired article at John A. Quinn. Unfortunately, not understanding the "move" command, in the process I created two other, differently titled but otherwise identical versions of this same article that I would now like to delete (while retaining the article that appears at the above-cited URL).

The article I'd like to delete is found at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:John_A._Quinn, which resulted from my moving the original draft from my userspace to "Wikipedia" as opposed to "Article". There are two versions of the improperly titled article now, following my botched attempt to move the mistitled article back into my userspace. One appears with the title "Wikipedia:John A. Quinn", while the other (a redirect) has the title "User:Wikipedia"John A. Quinn". Help, pls! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nostammai (talkcontribs) 18:21, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Don't worry, Wikipedia:John A. Quinn has been deleted.--ukexpat (talk) 18:52, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Picture on article about the Lenox Ave subway service

On this page IRT Lenox Avenue Line there is a copy of a scan from the JoeKorner, my web site. I tried to edit the photo to show the origin, but that change was removed. I'm not sure how else to just get credit for the scan. It was originally posted as a different URL, but was moved to http://www.thejoekorner.com/rollsigns/irtendno3.gif a few years ago. Sorry for the confusion.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.120.117.104 (talkcontribs)

The image credit should appear on the image information page not on the article page.--ukexpat (talk) 18:50, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ah. The article name is given incorrectly. It's at 3 (New York City Subway service). The credit link in the picture description is broken; I'll use the one above to repair it. It's only good luck that someone who happens to be familiar with the subway articles saw this. Each article has a Talk Page, for example Talk:3 (New York City Subway service) which is watched by the people who make corrections to the article. That's the place to tell them about mistakes.

Many thanks, Pete ReSAKSS (talk)
