This article is a list of significant events that occur in aviation in 2024.

Events

January

2 January
A runway collision at Haneda Airport in Tokyo occurred when Japan Airlines Flight 516, operated by an Airbus A350-900 arriving from Sapporo, collided with a Japan Coast Guard aircraft and both aircraft caught on fire. This resulted in the complete destruction of both aircraft. All 367 passengers and 12 crew members of the Airbus were evacuated. There were six occupants onboard the Coast Guard aircraft, a De Havilland Canada Dash 8; the captain escaped with serious injuries whilst the remaining five crew members were killed. The Coast Guard aircraft was scheduled to provide relief to Niigata in response to the Sea of Japan earthquake.[1][2]
4 January
A Bellanca 17-30A Super Viking crashed off the coast of Bequia in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.[3] Actor Christian Oliver and his two daughters were killed in the accident along with the pilot.[4][5]
5 January
Shortly after departing Portland International Airport, a Boeing 737 MAX 9 operating as Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 suffered an explosive decompression when a plug covering an unused exit door blew out. The aircraft made a safe return to Portland with all 177 occupants alive.[6] The FAA subsequently ordered all 737 MAX 9 planes fitted with door plugs to be grounded for inspection.[7] It was subsequently reported that Alaska Airlines and United Airlines both discovered faults on other 737s.[8]
11 January
A flight from The Gambia to the Ivory Coast, carrying the Gambia national football team to the Africa Cup of Nations, makes an emergency landing due to a loss of oxygen lasting over nine minutes.[9]
16 January
The United States Department of Justice blocked the proposed $3.8 billion acquisition of Spirit Airlines by JetBlue, citing that it would create a lack of competition in low-cost carriers. The stock price of Spirit Airlines dropped by 47% after the decision was made.[10]
18 January
At the WINGS India 2024 event in Hyderabad, Akasa Air placed an order for 150 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, including both the MAX 10 and MAX 200 variants.[11]
A Jetways Airlines Fokker 50 carrying humanitarian aid from Mogadishu to El Barde, Somalia, ran off the runway upon arrival at its destination and impacted a house, destroying it, and killing one of the four people on board.[12]
20 January
A Dassault Falcon 10 carrying six people crashed in the Kuf Ab District of Afghanistan's Badakhshan Province, killing two of its occupants.[13]
21 January
An Airbus A350 operating as Air France Flight 356 from Paris to Toronto suffered a hard tail strike on landing, causing rear aft structural damage to the aircraft; nobody was hurt but the aircraft had to be repaired.[14][15][importance?]
23 January
A Burmese Shaanxi Y-8 transport aircraft, carrying 14 people onboard overshot the runway when it attempted to land in Lengpui Airport in Mizoram, India. Eight people were injured. The plane had been sent by Myanmar to pick up its military personnel who sought refuge in India following intense clashes with rebel groups in their country. The aircraft sustained damage to its body.[16][importance?]
A BAe Jetstream 32 operating as Northwestern Air Flight 738 crashed shortly after takeoff from Fort Smith Airport, Northwest Territories, Canada, when at 500 m (1,600 ft), killing six out of the seven on board.[17]
24 January
A Russian Ilyushin Il-76 transport aircraft, reportedly carrying 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war along with three other passengers and six crew from Chkalovsky air base near Moscow to Belgorod, crashed in the Belgorod region of Russia.[18]
26 January
A US citizen stole a Cessna 172 from a flight school located at Addison Airport, 15 miles north of downtown Dallas, Texas, and flew for 80 miles before crashing at the Texas-Oklahoma state border. The man died at the incident.[19][20][importance?]
31 January
An F-16 crashed off the coast of South Korea, the crash is still under investigation by the USAF. The pilot of the F-16 safely ejected from the plane but suffered many injuries.[21][22][importance?]

February

1 February
A Beechcraft Bonanza V35 crashed into and demolished a mobile home in Clearwater, Florida, after a reported engine failure. Four homes were damaged in the mobile home park where the crash occurred leaving three people dead.[23][24][importance?]
6 February
A Robinson R44 Raven II helicopter piloted by former Chilean president Sebastián Piñera lost control and crashed into Lake Ranco in Chile. Piñera was killed and the other three people on board survived.[25][26]
9 February
A Bombardier Challenger 600 operated as Hop-A-Jet Flight 823 crashed into a vehicle on Interstate 75 in Collier County, Florida while attempting to make an emergency landing. Two of the five on board were killed in the crash.[27]
10 February
A chartered Eurocopter EC130 helicopter crashed in a desert near the California-Nevada border after a fire onboard. Two pilots and four passengers were onboard and none survived the crash.[28][29][30][importance?]
18 February
Air Serbia Flight 324, an Embraer 195 operated by Marathon Airlines, struck landing lights on takeoff at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport. The aircraft flew for another hour and made an emergency landing at the same airport with a gaping hole in the fuselage. All 111 occupants were reported safe.[31][32]
20–25 February
The Singapore Airshow was held.[33] Highlights included orders for Airbus from Vietjet (20 A330neos) and Starlux Airlines (three A330neos and five A350Fs), Boeing from Thai Airways (45 787-9s) and Royal Brunei Airlines (four 787-9s), and Comac from Tibet Airlines (40 C919s and 10 ARJ21s).[34]
21 February
The TAI TF Kaan, a fifth-gen stealth fighter being developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries, performed its maiden flight.[35]
26 February
Canadian Budget airline Lynx Air ceased operations due to financial issues.[36][37]

March

4 March
A Piper PA-32RT-300T crashed near Interstate 40 while attempting an emergency landing at John C. Tune Airport, Nashville, Tennessee, after a reported engine failure. Five deaths were reported and there were no survivors.[38][39]
5 March
A Dash 8-300 operating as Safarilink Aviation Flight 53 from Wilson Airport, Nairobi to Diani near Mombasa was involved in a mid-air collision with a Cessna 172 operated by a local flying school. The Dash returned to Wilson and landed safely with no injuries among the 39 passengers and five crew. The Cessna crashed in Nairobi National Park killing the two occupants.[40]
A Cessna Grand Caravan overran the runway on landing at the Katchungu-Tchambogo airstrip and crashed into a small house. One of the two occupants was killed.[41][42][importance?]
Three French aircraft were intercepted by Russia over the Black Sea, to "prevent a violation of the Russian state border".[43][44]
7 March
A Boeing 777-200ER operating as United Airlines Flight 35 lost a wheel shortly after taking off from San Francisco International Airport. The wheel fell and damaged multiple cars; nobody on board or on the ground were hurt. The plane made an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport.[45][46][importance?]
8 March
A Boeing 737 MAX 8 operating as United Airlines Flight 2477 slid off the runway at George Bush International Airport. All onboard survive with two suffering minor injuries.[47][48][importance?]
A Eurocopter UH-72 Lakota crashed near the Mexico–United States border killing two National Guards and a Border Patrol agent and injuring one soldier on board.[49][50][importance?]
David E. Harris, the first African American pilot who flew for a major airline, died at the age of 89.[51][52]
10 March
A Boeing 787-9 operating as LATAM Airlines Flight 800 nosedived mid-air after a malfunction in the aircraft, injuring at least 50 occupants. The plane made an emergency landing at Auckland Airport.[53][54]
11 March
An IAI 1125 Astra crashed in woods near Bath County, Virginia after a fire broke out onboard. All five on board did not survive.[55][56][importance?]
A Piper PA-32 crashed into a power line in Madras, Oregon. The pilot did not survive. The crash sparked a power outage in the area.[57][58][importance?]
12 March
A Russian Ilyushin Il-76 military transport aircraft crashed near Belgorod after suffering an engine fire. All 15 onboard were killed.[59][60]
14 March
A Single-Engined Cirrus SR22 crashed in the woods near Whitethorn, California. The couple and their child survived miraculously due to a parachute that is built into the plane.[61][importance?]

July

22–26 July
The Farnborough Airshow is scheduled to be held.[62]

November

13–15 November
The Bahrain International Airshow is scheduled to be held.[63]

Deadliest crash

The deadliest crash so far in 2024 is the crash of a Russian Ilyushin Il-76 on 24 January, with 74 people reportedly on board.[18]

The deadliest civilian crash so far in 2024 is that of a Piper PA-46 operated by IT'S Soluções Ltda which crashed near Itapeva, Minas Gerais, Brazil, on 28 January, killing all seven on board.[64]

The second deadliest civilian crash occurred on 4 March when a BAe Jetstream 32 operated by Northwestern Air crashed shortly after takeoff on 23 January, killing six out of the seven on board.
