    How should I welcome newbies?

    Is it possible to disable unified login?

    I don't want to use it but there doesn't seem to be an option to get rid of this. I want to have different accounts on different wiki's. I have an old account on de.wikipedia which I sometimes use and I want edits to be placed under that name, not this one. Yet even unselecting Log in Globally won't prevent this.     Follow a category tree?

    Is there any way to follow a category tree, either up or down? What I mean is - I pulled all pages from Category:Ohio and it's subcats, I'm somehow ending up with articles like Spring Mill, Kentucky.     You could try drilling up from the Spring Mill, Kentucky article. It is in three non-hidden categories:
    The last category is a subcategory of Category:Metropolitan areas of Indiana, which contains the article Cincinnati – Northern Kentucky metropolitan area. Depending on what you mean by "pulled" it's not hard to see how a recursive retrieval of all articles categorized somewhere under Category:Ohio and its subcategories could slop over into neighboring states.     Who to ask?

    I've just come across this list. Both the list and the articles seem to be worthy of deletion, but I have zero knowledge of this area. It has been edited by a fair few different names over the years too. Before starting an AfD with about 100 articles I wanted to ask a group with some sort of specialist knowledge whether or not this was wise. The problem is that Wikiproject Pakistan appears to be inactive from a quick scan of their project and talk pages. Any suggestion of who to ask? Stu.W UK (talk) 02:54, 20 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Both the list itself and the handful of articles I looked at appeared to be reasonable. They don't seem worthy of deletion. Some of the articles are rough around the edges and need copy editing for spelling and grammar, and other improvements best left to those who know about the tribes in question.     But what I don't understand is what possible use they serve. Presumably tribal affiliation serves some significance to Baloch people, but this is never explained. To take a letter at random I went for 'g'. Gabol looks great and has a big bibliography but I don't see what difference it has to someone's family history. The other 10 articles have a single reference between them. So I guess what I'm really asking is - where can I find someone who can explain to me whether each Baloch tribe is significant and notable enough for an article?     Maybe reading Tribe would help you. I suspect that List of countries in Europe would be more useless to Baloch people than these articles are to you. Especially Switzerland where not only are the people not of the same tribe, they don’t even speak the same language.     Be careful not to confuse the fact that you or I know nothing about these people with them being insignificant or non-notable. We must respect our ignorance by adopting a modest and cautious attitude. Some of these articles are in quite reasonable shape, while some are short and ragged and could survive some kind attention. Even though you are not qualified to maintain the subject matter itself, you can certainly reupholster the articles to great effect simply by correcting the spelling and grammar. Perhaps you could pose your questions on the talk pages of those who commenced some of the articles, or who added a lot of material to them, that is, people who by their work demonstrate their greater familiarity with the subject. — O'Dea (talk) 20:32, 20 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Edit Conflict?

    A page I was in the middle of creating was reviewed by Wikipedia before I had a chance to completely finish it and cite all my sources. Now, more than half of what was on that page is gone, replaced by a warning. Is there any way to retrieve the information? And if not how would I make sure that everything isn't deleted again before I finish? And shouldn't Wikipedia wait at least a day after the publication of an article to review it, so that people can actually finish their articles? Anulik96 (talk) 04:46, 20 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    I guess you're talking about the article Mariam Nazarian? From looking at the history, nothing that you saved on that page has been lost - if the loss was caused by an edit conflict you may have been taken to the edit conflict resolution page and given an opportunity to merge your information into the live article. As the PROD reason is for unreferenced BLP, you have a 10 day grace period (as shown on the template on the article) to provide a reference or otherwise improve the article to prevent its deletion. Any new article placed into article-space is reviewed as soon as is reasonably practicable - this helps us catch obvious attack pages and other disparaging edits (see Wikipedia:New pages patrol). Wikipedia:Your first article suggests creating an article in your user-space first and then moving it into the live article-space when you feel it is ready, user-space is widely used for drafting in this way.     sock policy

    Over at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Francis_E_Williams, User:Tiptoety declined a checkuser request that had already been endorsed, with a reason that doesn't seem to make sense. What's more, I can't ask him/her/it about it, as zir talk page is semi-protected.     Scorpion781004

    User:Scorpion781004 has redirected his user and talk pages to Mortal Kombat 10 and Talk:Mortal Kombat 10. He has thus received notifications, most recently from me, on an improper talk page.     Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see where you notified the user. In any event, if you want administrative action, you should go to WP:ANI, unless someone knows of a better notice board for this sort of violation (WP:UP).--Bbb23 (talk) 17:56, 20 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    This looks like a good-faith mistake. You can see from the history of Mortal Kombat 10 that Scorpion781004 began his user page as a sandbox for that article, then moved his user page to Mortal Kombat 10 to make the article live. Doing so converted his user and user talk pages to redirects. A bot subsequently redirected Mortal Kombat 10 to Mortal Kombat (2011 video game) to fix a redirect.     But people like me are placing notifications on a talk page of a redirected article rather than the user's talk page, so something needs to be done. I will notify ANI, as you suggest.     It's ok, I've restored the user and user talk pages and explained to Scorpion781004 what happened, and marked Talk:Mortal Kombat 10 for speedy deletion. I believe everything's resolved. Bbb23 – by and large people don't edit other people's user pages unless there's a copyright violation or personal attack or whatever, but in this case it's clear the problem was caused by an honest mistake by a new editor, so I saw no harm in just fixing it for him.     Perhaps it would be in order to avoid such good-faith mistakes by not automatically creating redirects on moves from user space to main space (or maybe on all inter-namespace moves).     Flagging a section that needs to cite sources

    The article on Transcendentalism, section on History, needs sources and expansion. How do I post this? Also, where do I go to find the answer to this?     Following up on David's point, you have a couple of choices. One is to check the box in Preferences\Watchlist so that any page you edit is automatically added to your watchlist. The other is to manually add a page to your watchlist, which you can do by clicking on the star in the upper right-hand corner to the left of the Search text box. The watchlist (if you view it) will then alert you to any changes to the article, in this instance this forum. Just be aware that it will tell you anytime a change has been made anywhere on the Help page, not just to your section of the Help page.     My preferences: internationalisation (sic)

    The language in My preferences is set to en and not to the British kind. And yet it still shows "internationalisation" in the nonstandard British spelling. It's a pretty trivial error, but can anyone explain it or fix it?—Biosketch (talk) 19:30, 20 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    How can I tell if File:Mile-High Tower.jpg is correctly licensed? It took me seconds to find the same image on this page published by Mena Infrastructure/GDS Publishing Ltd.     Looks like a clear copyvio to me, I'd tag it with {{db-filecopyvio|url=http://www.menainfra.com/news/mile-high-tower/}}. There's also the more good faith option avenue, tagging it with {{subst:npd}} will give the uploader a chance to provide evidence of permission/ownership.     File:Finance Centre.jpg is another copyvio. It's a computer render. The meta data says it was created in 2008, and he just uploaded it a couple days ago.     Using the Wikipedia logo as an icon to a specific Wikipedia article

    Hi, I'm working on a new site and the Show, Season and Episode guides would be a valuable asset to the "User Experience" of one of the features on my site. I'd wish to use the Wikipedia logo next to a line of text (something along the lines of "Read the Wiki") Linking the topic to the relevant Wikipedia article. Can I do this?     Well, possibly under a claim of fair use. Unlike a large portion of the images one sees on Wikipedia, which are either in the public domain or copyrighted but usable under a free license, the Wikipedia log is straight copyrighted. I don't think this would properly qualify as fair use since the focus of the use is not about Wikipedia itself; a link to a random Wikipedia article is rather generic. By the way, the text you are thinking of adding—if you are referring to Wikipedia as "the Wiki", please don't: see Wikipedia:Don't abbreviate Wikipedia as Wiki.     I don't think you can use the copyrighted globe logo for your purpose but you can use a black W on white background which is a Wikipedia icon used by both Wikipedia and others referring to Wikipedia.     Why am I being asked for a username and password all of a sudden?

    Starting quite recently, whenever I open ANY Wikipedia page, I get asked for a username and password for http://goiplookup.wikimedia.org. I have to cancel out of the dialog at least twice (up to 4 times for some pages) before I am able to read the Wikipedia page I am trying to load. Why is this happening and how can I stop it?

    A way to search all noticeboard archives?

    Is there a way to search all noticeboard archives (COIN, RSN, SPAM, etc) for a particular string? I'm looking for an old report of a particular web address. Thank you, CliffC (talk) 01:43, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    All such noticeboards are in the Wikipedia namespace, so you can simply restrict your search to that namespace. It might be a little wider than what you wanted by it should not be too unwieldy.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 06:08, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    (e/c) Certainly there is a systemic bias resulting from the demographics of those who contribute to this English version of Wikipedia. Articles are created by those who are interested in particular subjects—there is no central authority that dictates what articles are to be created. Also, the world may not have written extensively about the cinema of Marathi in reliable sources that are accessible to English speakers, and since what is written about is also tied to what can be sourced, that also affects our coverage of this topic. We do have an article on Marathi cinema and reading that you can see we also have articles on Marathi films. See Category:Marathi-language films for a more complete idea of our coverage as small as it is.     Linking to a picture that was uploaded into Commons

I succeeded doing so for the Hebrew version, but for the English version, only the file name appears, and it doesn't show the picture.     Floating side bar

    Im using monobook skin and Ive added a script that shifts the my user toolbar on top into a sidebar on the left and made to float so that when i scroll down any page the toolbar will always be visible. Ive used this script since 2007 and didnt have any problem until about 2 months ago. The sidebar was pushed down leaving an empty space where the wikipedia logo was supposed to be (in order to use the script the logo was supposed to be switched off) and all the interwiki links went missing. The script appears to be outdated and the user who created the script is no longer active on wikipedia (User:Omegatron). I found the script here: Help:User style. Can anyone point me to where I can find a solution to this problem? Ive checked out Wikipedia:User page design center, but this seems to only cover userpage designing. Ive tried cologne blue skin which allows the user to create a floating sidebar but i didnt like that the "discussion", "edit this page", "history", etc buttons were moved to the sidebar instead of on top of the page.     Translating Wikipedia from English

    I am interested in reading Wikipedia articles in languages other than English but if I click onto one of the foreign languages on the left-hand bar, the translated article is often very different from the English one.     Each Wikipedia maintains its own articles, which is probably why they vary from language to language.     Place of birth through the ages

    When documenting someone's place of birth, do you write the place name and county when the person was born, or what it is today? For example, Tony Hayward, the poor guy, was born in Slough, which is now in Buckinghamshire, but at the time was in Berkshire. So what do you put on his article?     Error in map image

    Article on right to work laws at[[6]] shows map with caption stating that right-to-work states are highlighted in turquoise. New Hampshire is not highlighted, yet the list to the left of the map includes New Hampshire. This can be confusing to readers.     Delay in Category listings

    It wasn't about the coord template. It was a misformatted comment which incorrectly ended with --!> instead of -->. This meant the comment actually never ended and it swallowed the category code.     I assume you refer to attribution be given to the original author to satisfy their license rights. If material is copied from another page then link to the page in the edit summary. See more at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. If it's copied from the article's talk page then "copied from talk page" without a link should be sufficient.     Deleting without scaring off a new editor

    Do re mi (nirvana song) has just appeared. It isn't a notable song so should become a redirect to the album it's on, and may then be deleted as an implausible redirect.     Leave a message on the creator's talk page explaining, in plain English, why their article is going to be deleted. Verifiability is probably the key in this case, so explain why we can't have content about things that haven't been written about elsewhere. Don't use any abbreviations or Wiki-jargon, but do insert links to relevant policies so that they can read them if they want. Invite them to ask questions about policy. (I usually end an explanation of policy with "Does that make sense?" to leave the possibility that I haven't explained very well clear.) Thank them for their contribution. Direct them to Wikipedia:WikiProject Alternative music. Perhaps suggest other Nirvana song articles that need work. These are just suggestions and things that I do.     The best place to make suggestions like this is at The Village Pump. However, I do not think that you will get a lot of support for the idea because Wikipedia is not Facebook: it is an encyclopaedia, and articles are ideally rated according to objective criteria rather than popularity (see for example WP:FA).     Couple of comments: First, articles are not listed for deletion if someone dislikes them, they are listed because a user believes they should be deleted because they do not meet Wikipedia policy, usually with respect to notability. Sometimes, admittedly, articles are sent to Afd for the wrong reasons, but they are usually quickly identified and the Afd closed as a "keep". Second, assessments do not appear on "every article", but only on those where someone has taken the trouble to make an assessment and completed a talk page Project template appropriately.     I tried to create an account using the name I use every where else on-line ... Cat Yoga, but it wouldn't let me. I thought it said that it was too similar to CatYoga, which was listed. But I can't tell if it is listed as a name or a subject? You see, I created The Ancient Art of Cat Yoga as a comedic hoax in 1994. I was featured in the tabloids, who wrote about my Cat Yoga school (picture Turban wearing House-Cats who sit in the Lotus Position and Meditate. ( I was a featured guest on the Geraldo Rivera Show) ....When I looked further in Wikipedia, I saw CatYoga listed on the page of Don Black, a White Supremacist ??? It says Don Black (White Supremacist) External links: catyoga.com/postscript followed by something that says: Operation Red Dog .... Can anyone explain this to me? Why is catyoga listed as an external link to a white supremacist ? What does that mean? I am NOT asking you to change anything, just to explain it to me.     Hi Death Safari. You're getting this notice on trying to register User:Cat Yoga because someone registered the username CatYoga on May 4 2009 (see here). The Wikimedia software prevents the registration of usernames very similar to those that already exist, to avoid confusion and impersonation. That user has never edited here or on any other Wikimedia projects (see here), so you might be successful in a request to usurp that username and use it yourself.
    The reference to catyoga.com in the Don Black article is unrelated to the username issue: the URL you'res seeing in that article reflects the fact that, as well as pages on cat yoga at catyoga.com/catyoga/index, catyoga.com hosts a biography (at catyoga.com/home) of James Earl Ray (who was convicted of assassinating Martin Luther King, Jr.). Whoever maintains the catyoga.com domain appears to have interests in both Ray and, uh, flexible felines. (Whether it's an appropriate external link is another matter; it appears to be a hobby site which wouldn't necessarily meet our reliable sources requirements); but I haven't looked into this in detail.)

    Why yes, it does appear that you are missing something.
    User John of Reading said to the poster "I recommend that you don't try to do this", backed up by user Gonzonoir who said "you shouldn't write an article about a subject with which you have close personal involvement", so me pointing out that they said this is hardly controversial, and it may be that you made a mistake while reading their words? Both of those statements are a long way from advising the poster on the correct way to approach a potential COI situation.
    Anyways, you also mistakenly suggest that I am "the only one who even says it is strongly discouraged", when I not only linked to the policy page that I was quoting from but used quotation marks to really spell it out for people who were hard of understanding that it was, in fact, a quote, and not my own personal opinion.
    I strongly suggest that you visit the COI page to understand what that policy means, and we also have a page on inverted commas if that has proven to be a stumbling block for you.     The funny thing is 1) I am of firesian descent and should know the correct terms, 2) if you'd care to check the gGerman and Friesian pages you'd see I am correct and 3) the suggestions he made are soooo long-winded, no sane person is going to follow them.

    Do you want articles improved by people have the right knowledge at their disposal, or do you prefer moderators, who apparently haven't the faintest idea about the issue in question, delete corrections and return the page to its erroneous content?

    NB. At the top of the page the person was actually being rather insulting saying something to the effect that me being stupid was not very nice but sadly a fact. I really do wonder who is stupid, Mr. Closedmouth, or I.

    Looking at the page history of your talk page, I see that the first message was added by an anonymous editor almost a year ago. Ignore it.
    Today's message shows the importance of filling in the edit summary box when making an edit, so that other editors can quickly see the reasoning behind the edit. At first glance, your edit looks just like vandalism - adding one extra character so that the first line of the text no longer matches the article title. So, although Closedmouth (talk · contribs) made a mistake here, it was an understandable mistake.

    Whatever you do, do not use The Range Home and Leisure as the model for an article about a company. The sourcing is woefully inadequate and does not, IMHO, reach the level reaquired to demonstrate the notability of the subject. It is also rather spammy and non-neutral in tone.     removed references

    Dear all, A necessary reference to Sundial#Sundials_in_the_Southern_Hemisphere has been replaced with some references that do not actually back up the points raised. The POV I can sort later but try as I might I cannot find a version of the article with the original reference at all. Are references not logged? I am happy to learn how to do this (simple instructions please) but after 2 hours I am not getting anywhere. The original will be a book reference to the Story of Time ed Kristen Lippincott.     You originally added the reference for later sections in [16] before there was a "Sundials in the Southern Hemisphere" section. You added the section three weeks later [17] without using the reference.     Global log in

    I agreed to the global log in scheme in order to edit Wikiquote too, and to my surprise the site has automatically generated a profile for me on French Wikipedia. Problem is, I already have a separate profile on French Wikipedia, and now whenever I log on to either I find myself automatically logged off the other one. This puzzles me as there is a "log me in globally" option which I always leave unticked. Is there any way of opting out of the scheme? This is massively irritating.     Yes I have. The problem is that my accounts do not have the same name, but the system thinks they do. What I do not understand is that unticking the "log me globally" option seems to have no effect.     Wikipedia languages can have diferent rules. I don't know whether the French have the same rules about more than one account. Wikipedia:Sock puppetry is a policy here.     Hello, I'm wondering how to cite a peice of Audio as a source. There is a webpage with an interview I'd like to use, but I am not sure how to do it. Although it's a web source, I know that videos have to be cited with different parameters in the citation?.. Also how do you archive the audio?     Photos submitted

    About 18 months ago, I submitted original photos from a concert I attended in Orlando Florida of Sugarland. I completed the proper paperwork and gave permission to Wikipedia to use the photos. Tonight I looked for the photos but was unsuccessful in locating them. Would you be able to assist me in this endeavor? I will be attending a Kenny Chesney concert in May of this year and will have seats close to the stage. I intend to submit photos for his webpage @ Wikipedia.     In order to have uploaded photos here or at our companion site for free images, the Wikimedia Commons, you had to have done so using a user account you created. If you can tell us the exact name of the account you used, we can then check its contributions (included deleted contributions) to see what became of the images. Since you left this message editing under your IP address, which has no other posts but this one, you haven't provided us any information to go on to investigate your question, other than possibly searching the history of the article on Sugarland to see whether it at one time had some images included that are no longer present; I just tried that, though not in great depth, and came up empty.     You say you "gave permission to Wikipedia". Do you remember if you specifically said that the photos could be used by Wikipedia, or did you agree to release them under a free license (e.g. GFDL or Creative Commons)? If the former, then there's a good chance that the images were deleted since the license Wikipedia operates under means that such strict releases are unsuitable.     New article - submission declined

    Recently, we posted an article on our company and submitted for review.

    We were returned a "This submission has been declined. The reviewer left the following comment: We're sorry, but we cannot accept unsourced suggestions or sources that are not reliable per the verifiability policy. Please cite reliable, third-party sources with your suggestions. Third party sources are needed so the information can be verified and to establish the notability of the topic."

    We thought that it may have been because we didn't have enough external references. So we added news items from third party sites. Even that didn't seem to help. Wiki still returned the same message (above).

    How do we circumvent this? I find many articles that do not have any links embedded in them. Why is ours being treated differently?     To establish notability, please see Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies). A quote from there: "A primary test of notability is whether people independent of the subject itself (or its manufacturer, creator, or vendor) have actually considered the company, corporation, product or service notable enough that they have written and published non-trivial, non-routine works that focus upon it."
    The BCCL news item looks, to me, like independent coverage of the company, so that's a start. The "Company Facts" link confirms that the company exists but does not indicate that it is important in any way. Presumably that site has a page for every registered company in the region or market sector.     At the moment the link to Worldcat generated by {{ISSN}} is too specific. For example {{ISSN|0028-0836}} links to http://www.worldcat.org/issn/0028-0836 which is one hit for this ISSN. I would like someone to change it to http://www.worldcat.org/search?fq=x0%3Ajrnl&q=n2%3A0028-0836 which gives more hits.     Setting up an account is good but not required. Wikipedia uses perhaps a bit unintuitive system where the link to the reference is introduced in the text, where there is the little number in the box that directs the user to the actual source, instead of the links being in the bottom where they're seen in reading mode. WP:REF has more instructions on citing sources. If you like, you can just drop the replacement link here and I'll add it to the article. Thanks for spotting the rotten link, by the way.     Difficulty printing Wikipedia articles

    Recently, I've been finding that I can print out only the first page--no more--from any Wikipedia article in Printable Form.     Naming a page issue

    Hello - I have a question about naming a page -

    I'm writing a page on a person, and he is a "Jr." say Bob Smith, Jr. - so I first put the name in as Bob Smith, Jr. - but he get's listed under the "B" for Bob instead of "S" for Smith, so I tried the other way Smith, Jr. Bob, but then it makes it look like his name is Jr. Bob Smith - what is the proper way to handle this on the title and so that it pulls correctly with the last name Smith, Jr. and the first name Bob (in categories and such) Also - there is no middle name.     Using the sandbox to Autoconfirm 'fake' accounts

    I have this idea. Can you make Wikipedia to where a person that uses the sandbox cannot be Autoconfirmed?

    I used the sandbox and it Autoconfirms me.

    So, if a vandal used the sandbox to Autoconfirm their account, they can vandalize protected pages. So, can you make edits to the sandbox not count?

    I only want to see the Autoconfirmed ones make trusty edits, not 'test edits'.

    Unfortunately, I don't believe there is a way for the software to do that. Autoconfirmation is easy enough to attain that making sandbox edits not count would probably not be a significant roadblock. TNXMan 18:14, 23 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Hello Al. Template:MEast-royal-stub is the template in question, I have changed it for you. The easiest way to fix this yourself is to click "edit" and find the template in the section "Pages transcluded onto the current version of this page:" towards the bottom of the page, click the link there then edit the template as you would an article.     Is Twinkle malfunctioning or is just me?

    For the past few hours I have had difficulty with the Twinkle tools. Everything from Rollback, Welcoming new Users, and warning Users seems to not be working for me. I only use Twinkle while using "Safari". I tested my Rollback using internet explorer at my sand box and it worked fine that way, but when using Safari it either gives me error warnings, or when I am trying to add a template to a user talk page, the page just won't accept the edit. Is there something going on with twinkle, or is it just me. If it is me, is there someone who can fix it for me?--Jojhutton (talk) 21:34, 23 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Fixing Page

    Need explicit directions to correct error. Was attempting to add a photograph and inadvertently deleted something. Now page will not image content. When I go to edit, content still there. Received a message regarding <reflist> tag or <reference/> tag. Would like help/direction to simply return page to display.     Fixed. Just below this note, I'll leave some standard advice on images.
    • If you want to add an existing image to an article, add [[File:File name.jpg|thumb|Caption text.]] to the area of the article where you want the image to appear – replacing File name.jpg with the actual file name of the image, and Caption text with a short description of the image.     • If you want to upload an image from your computer for use in an article, you must determine the proper license of the image (or whether it is in the public domain). If you know the image is public domain or copyrighted but under a suitable free-license, upload it to the Wikimedia Commons instead of here, so that all projects have access to the image (sign up).
