Copyright question

Dear Editors: This Afc submission: Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Ollie A. Randall is copied from HERE, but there is a note under the copyright declaration that appears to allow reproduction, provided that credit is given. Is a citation enough credit? The text would have to be edited to remove POV; would that be acceptable? It seems to me that it would have to be kept the same or not used. —Anne Delong (talk) 02:08, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The statement on that site: "Please credit the University of Minnesota Libraries if you copy or reproduce material from this page." is not exactly an explicit grant of a free license. (For one thing it doesn't clearly grant permission to modify the quoted content.) I wouldn't accept it unless an email were sent to the contact address and an explicit permission response was received and filed with OTRS. I think it would be far easier to rewrite the content using the page as a source. But you could ask at Wikipedia:Copyright problems if you wish. DES (talk) 03:28, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

secondary or tertiary sources

If i interview an author and then publish the interview, when i summarize the interview would the summarization of the interview be secondary or a tertiary source? i am having trouble with my references. everything is cited and i have permission from the author to write about them on wikipedia and share their biography. "This article relies on references to primary sources. Please add references to secondary or tertiary sources. (November 2013)" Tyffani_Clark_Kemp thank you for any help! -- -- MrJoseOtero (talk) 03:01, 17 November 2013‎ (UTC)[reply]

Firstly no need to use {{helpme}} on the help desk, DES (talk) 03:06, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c)@MrJoseOtero. Well your premise is based on an non-starter. You and your website are not a reliably published source and so whether you call it primary or secondary or tertiary, its not an acceptable source for Wikipedia content. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 03:12, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Secondly, You should only cite your own work if it is published under independant editorial control, such as in a peer-reviewed journal, or in a magazine with strict editorial policies and a reputation for fact checkinmg, or if it is a book published by a major publisher, or the like. See WP:SELFCITE DES (talk) 03:15, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thirdly, an interview with the subject of an article is mostly considered to be a primary source, as much of the content is provided by the person being interviewed. Only the interviewer's questions or comments might be a secondary source, and then only if it is so published as to be a reliable source. DES (talk) 03:15, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Fourthly and finally, you should seek out independent secondary reliable sources which discuss the subject in some detail. If the subject is notable, you should be able to find them. DES (talk) 03:17, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
In an interview there are two types of information. Usually, what the interviewer has published is a secondary source, and what the interviewee has said is a primary source. However, if the interviewer is also the person making the Wikipedia article, then this would be original research (not allowed), particularly if the interview is not published in a reliable publication which is overseen by an editor/fact checker as explained above. —Anne Delong (talk) 03:13, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If the interveiw were to be published by a reliable source, it is not original research even if the interviewer is also the wikipedia editor. But if it was published on a website run by the interviewer, it shouldn't normally be used at all, not even as a primary source, under WP:SELFPUB. DES (talk) 03:22, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The statements made by the person interviewed is not independent of the person, so it has limited usage in a Wikipedia biography of that person. The statements by the interviewer are independent, but if you are the interviewer and are also trying to post a summary of them in Wikipedia, then that runs against WP:COI. if you are trying to write a Wikipedia Biography about the author Tyffani Clark Kemp, then the work she has produced is not independent of Tyffani Clark Kemp and cannot be used as a source for a Wikipedia biography on her. -- Jreferee (talk) 07:28, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Jreferee is quite correct that statemetns made by the subject of an article are not independent, but it is not correct that such sources "cannot be used" here. Indeed sometimes it is vital to cite non-independent sources to clearly document the views and statements of the subject. (see WP:PRIMARY and WP:SELFPUB for the uses and limitations non the uses of such sources.) However, such sources cannot be the sole sources for an article, particularly a biography. They do nothing to help establish notability. There must be sufficient sources that ARE independent (and reliable to establish notability, and the view(s) that others have taken of the subject. Moreover, an interview in which the interviewer is also the drafter of the article is already quite dubious -- if it is not published by a reliable publication, independent of both source and interviewer, with a reputation for editorial oversight, then i would say it has no place here at all. Using mobile version of Wikipedia query

Hello,

Straight up, I hope that this is the correct area to post this query, if not, I apologise and appreciate redirection.

Okay, I mainly use the mobile version of Wikipedia and find that if I click on a link that provides more details about a topic that when I go forward between the more detailed page and back to the main page, that the main page contracts the sub-category that I was looking at. This is frustrating as I have to re-expand the sub-category.

Having read the above paragraph, I can appreciate that this explanation is quite confusing, so I will provide example as below of the issue:

Main page - Grenada

Sub-category : History

Link within s-c : History of Grenada

Now, if I use the back button to return to the sub-category page, the section 'History' has contracted, rather than staying expanded (which I believe happens with the desktop version).

Thank you

Nick — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sera2775 (talkcontribs) 03:08, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Nick. If I understand correctly, what you are talking about is that when you have opened a section on a page, then click a wikilink to go to another page, and then use the back button on your phone to return to the original page, the section is no longer open. Is that right? (I was confused by your mention of categories: these are something else on Wikipedia, but don't normally show on the mobile version).
If that's it, I see your problem, but I doubt there's much can be done about it. (It doesn't arise on the desktop version, because sections are not opened and closed in that way.) The app doesn't know whether or not you are going to return to a page, so it would have to keep a record of what section you opened in every page you visited, which would be quite a burden on its memory. I may be wrong though, as I am not familiar with how the app is coded. The best place to ask is on the Village pump, technical page. --ColinFine (talk) 12:28, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
• Can Wikipedia be edited by mobile users? Last I tried it was impossible to log in through a mobile device. Even reading on a mobile is a problem for me because categories do not show up. XOttawahitech (talk)

List not under header

I have created a list of skyscrapers using referenced information. I created a new header to place the list under, however the list I have created has skipped my header and gone beneath a header underneath the one I created. Any help thanks?

List of cities with the most skyscrapers

My header is "List of cities by number of completed skyscrapers" — Preceding unsigned comment added by Logicgold (talkcontribs) 05:09, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I revised how the table was closed, from using "|-}" to using "|}". The List of cities with the most skyscrapers page advertises the site skyscrapercenter.com by using it as its main source. Just like people contributing to Wikipedia, skyscrapercenter.com site seems to get information from its users.[1] A difference is that Skyscraper Source Media figured out a way to sell publishing rights for the use of its materials,[2] -- Jreferee (talk) 07:13, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have (in this edit) made the format more standard, and added a number of wiki links. But any reviewer would say the primary problem is that no references are cited. See referencing for beginners and you might want to read Your first article. DES (talk) 14:46, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Your first article effort is very good. You appear to have complied of individual sentence summaries of reliable sources that are independent of the topic and put them in context via chronologically ordering the information. Advise, when you write a sentence, it is much easier to add a source at the end of it at that time to show others where it came from rather than trying to figure out where it came from later on. I updated the page.[3] A few more references and I think it will be ready to be moved to article space today. You also will want to nominate the article at Template talk:Did you know so that it is linked from Wikipedia's Main Page. Keep up the good work. -- Jreferee (talk) 16:31, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes it does look good, particularly for a first effort. However there is only one source currently cited, and that is linked to only a snippet view in Google books which shows only a single paragraph, so it is hard to tell whether the rest is in fact "individual sentence summaries of reliable sources that are independent of the topic" or not. I hope it is. Add several additional references, supporting the main points of the article, and I would agree that it is ready to go. DES (talk) 17:58, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I got a message that I haven't nominated this article properly, I can't seem to work it out, can someone do it for me, sorry but I am a bit flummoxed by the site. Am finding it difficult to leave a message on the DYK page! I do have a close connection but I have tried to be totally neutral, I feel he is well over due a page here. Thank you for all your help with it, much better then I could have ever done.

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. Username (not) taken

Hello Wikipedia Community, I just registered and wanted to use "Lommes" as my username, as it is my surname and twitter handle. However, the registration form says "Account creation error Cannot create account: the requested username is already taken in the unified login system". So I thought someone else has already taken the account. Point is, that does not seem to be the case. I checked all the 16 wikis on Wikimedia.org and all of them give me the same message "User account "Lommes" is not registered." What am i missing, and how can I get the "Lommes" username. Best, Daniel Lommes — Preceding unsigned comment added by DLommes (talkcontribs) 16:25, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The unified login system includes all the hundreds of different language versions of Wikipedia, as well as the many language-specific versions of Wiktionary, as well as wikiquote, wikidata, wikimedia commons and many others. (see [4]). Let me see what I can find out. DES (talk) 18:01, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
DLommes, according to this report that name was active on the German-language Wikipedia, making only 2 edits, the last one in 2007. this might qualify for Usurpation although usually that is only for unused accounts with NO edits at all, and usually is only done for somewhat established editors, as you can read on the page I linked. I suggest that you settle for "DLommes". DES (talk) 18:14, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
de:Spezial:Beiträge/Lommes shows the two edits were to a talk page and not an article. I don't know how strict they are but you can try making a usurpation request at de:Wikipedia:Benutzernamen ändern/Benutzernamens-Übernahme. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:00, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What is the size limit on wiki-pages?

I am just curious to find out what the maximum page length (in bytes) is on wikipedia, and is there a place that gathers statistics and displays the longest ones? Thanks in advance, XOttawahitech (talk) 17:34, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure there is an exact limit defined - usually people get fed up with the length of time taken to load a page , or are timed out when trying to edit it. As for the longest pages, please see Special:Longpages Arjayay (talk) 17:43, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Special:LongPages lists the longest articles in Wikipedia. (Note: That is only *articles* i.e., pages in ns0, not other namespaces.) So right now, the longest article in English Wikipedia is List of United States counties and county equivalents (0.59 MB). As for the maximum page size, it is controlled by $wgMaxArticleSize. It is set to 2000 in English Wikipedia. [5]. So 1.95312 MB is the maximum technically possible size of an article. Regards, --Glaisher [talk] 17:47, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification of the article which splits it into two -- how to?

Presently wiki has an article Transient electromagnetics, (also time-domain electromagnetics / TDEM), which must be corrected. The wiki search "time-domain electromagnetics" refers exclusively to this article, giving the user a wrong belief that it covers all the meaning of the term. In fact, the search must be directed to an ambiguity-resolving page with two entries:

• Time-domain electromagnetics (one of two general ansätze for the description of electromagnetic wave motion)
• Time-domain electromagnetics (geophysical exploration technique)

The first article is absent in wiki, and I am going to write it as soon as the structure will be established (there are a lot of trustable academic sources see, e.g., http://www.amazon.co.uk/Domain-Electromagnetics-Academic-Press-Engineering/dp/0125801904 ). The second article is what we have now as a source for both Transient electromagnetics and time-domain electromagnetics. I do believe that such clarification will not prejudice the significance of this existing article.

I did not understand how such changes can be made. Can someone enlighten me? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ajsmirnov (talkcontribs) 18:04, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Simply create the new page, with proper references, at a proper title. Wikipedia does not normally create disambiguation pages when there are only articles for two meanings of a term. Instead a Hatnote often using {{about}} or {{for}} is placed at the top of each page. But you need not worry over-much about that, other editors can and will add such notes if you get the article live. You can add a note on the talk page of each article about the connection between them. DES (talk) 18:24, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Are you asking about printing from Wikipedia, which is primarily a web browser question, or about printing from another source? If you have having difficulty in printing from Wikipedia and are following the standard procedures with your web browser, then we would want to know what web browser you are using, and whether you have refreshed your cache. If you are asking how to print from some other source, then this is not a Wikipedia question, but you might be able to get an answer at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Computing. Moles

I Searched "Mole & Avogador's Number". In the first article appeared the folowing:

The mole is widely used in chemistry instead of units of mass or volume as a convenient way to express amounts of reactants or of products of chemical reactions. For example, the chemical equation 2 H2 + O2 → 2 H2O implies that 2 mol of dihydrogen (H2) and 1 mol of dioxygen (O2) react to form 2 mol of water (H2O). The mole may also be used to express the number of atoms, ions, or other elementary entities in a given sample of any substance. The concentration of a solution is commonly expressed by its molarity, defined as the number of moles of the dissolved substance per litre of solution.

1. It would only be one mole of "dihydrogen" (H2)since the molecule already is )H2)or it would take two moes of Hydrogen and the one mole of Oxygen as stated. However the Oxygen would be in the form O2 so it would take one mole of oxygen (Ow) and two moles of hydrogen (H2).

Enough said! — Preceding unsigned comment added by TjhBoB (talkcontribs) 00:03, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Is the question whether the article is correct? The article is correct as stated. 2 moles of molecular hydrogen and 1 mole of molecular oxygen yield two moles of water. If you have any further questions, as noted, you can go to Wikipedia: Reference desk/Science. Robert McClenon (talk) 00:26, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
With the proper formatting in Mole (unit) it says: "For example, the chemical equation 2 H2 + O2 → 2 H2O implies that 2 mol of dihydrogen (H2) and 1 mol of dioxygen (O2) react to form 2 mol of water (H2O)."
This is correct. It sounds like you have overlooked that two and not one mol of water is formed. Fractions are usually disallowed in such equations but if we allowed it then we could instead write "H2 + ½ O2 → H2O implies that 1 mol of dihydrogen (H2) and half a mol of dioxygen (O2) react to form 1 mol of water (H2O)." I guess this is the version you have in mind. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:42, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A specific third party link syntax incompatable with wiki markup language

Greetings: A third party site (USGS) allows link saving with various display parameters imbeded. This can be executed by pasting into the browser bar but when put into a wikipedia external link the presense of double opening brackets breaks the link. Writing the link contents as a nowiki block within the single outer brackets causes no link to be generated.

(The following <nowiki> </nowiki> inside of single brackets - note that no link is generated)

In late 2013 a means of saving a link "bookmark" was instituted. One such bookmark for this general area may be selected here to show regional earthquakes of all magnitudes for the most recent seven days:[http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/#{%22feed%22%3A%227day_all%22%2C%22search%22%3Anull%2C%22sort%22%3A%22newest%22%2C%22basemap%22%3A%22grayscale%22%2C%22autoUpdate%22%3Atrue%2C%22restrictListToMap%22%3Atrue%2C%22timeZone%22%3A%22local%22%2C%22mapposition%22%3A[[37.00255267215955%2C-123.31329345703124]%2C[39.27691581029594%2C-120.34149169921875]]%2C%22overlays%22%3A{%22plates%22%3Atrue%2C%22faults%22%3Atrue}%2C%22viewModes%22%3A{%22map%22%3Atrue%2C%22list%22%3Afalse%2C%22settings%22%3Atrue%2C%22help%22%3Afalse}}]

Maybe I didn't need to replace all of them – but what I did worked. The page it leads to is fascinating. It's a scrollable and zoomable map of the world, with every earthquake in the last week shown, its size and colour indicating its magnitude and recentness. And it automatically updates once a minute. Different Wikipedias have different rules about this. I suggest you ask in the help desk (or whatever they call it) of whichever language Wikipedia your translated article is for. Maproom (talk) 07:34, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Many other projects do not accept fair use images, because the rules governing them are very specific to US copyright law, and are very different if they exist at all in the copyright law of most other countries. That is part of the reason why they are not accepted on Commons. DES (talk) 15:48, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If the rules of that other Wikipedia allow them, you will still need to upload them to that Wikipedia: there is no way for one Wikipedia to use an image from another one. --ColinFine (talk) 22:37, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I note you had already added this information to Mike Perlis before posting here. However, you have not cited any Reliable sources to corroborate the information. Wikipedia aims to have information cited in a reliable independent source that can be checked by any editor, at any time (which excludes your memory). If you worked with Perlis, you probably know where such information might have been published - can you find such a reference?

Translation through google translate

Hi! I am trying to make a translation of the article, which is in Polish. English version is very short and needs to be expanded. I figure out that it is possible to make simple translation through google translate, then correct it and here we go...but hmm, all I can do is I am coming to the translation page then I have no idea what to do, somehow I need to confirm that article...but how? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 136.173.162.130 (talk) 09:55, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The guidance you need is at Wikipedia:Translation. Make sure that you include references to support the content of your English version. - David Biddulph (talk) 12:46, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Please do not just paste a google translation unless you are vey confident in your ability to tidy it up afterwards, and intend to actually do so. Cleaning up a poor translation is an extremely difficult task (take a look at a few articles in Category:Wikipedia articles needing cleanup after translation and you'll see what I mean). A much better way is to expand an article a little bit at a time and tidy it as you go--Jac16888 Talk 13:14, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Another method would be to first clean up the Google text, in a word processor or in your sandbox, before pasting it into the English article. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 13:40, 19 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Republic of Ireland

Why does wikipedia think it can decide the name of a sovereign state above the head of that state. AFAIK republic of Ireland is a football team and nothing else. Is the purpose of wikipedia to be an accurate collection of facts or is it to present its take on reality. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.55.105.16 (talk) 14:31, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia does not attempt or pretend to decide what the name of a sovereign state is, it merely decides (or more accurately some of its editors decide) how to title it's articles. The article entitled Republic of Ireland starts "Ireland, also known as the Republic of Ireland (Irish: Poblacht na hÉireann), is a sovereign state in Europe..." The article Ireland is about the entire land body, including Northern Ireland. (it starts "Ireland ... is an island to the north-west of continental Europe.") We can not have two articles with the same title, so we must call this one something. Also, my understanding is that "Poblacht na hÉireann" translates approximately as "Republic of Ireland". If, after all that, you think that the article name should be changed, please discuss the matter at Talk:Republic of Ireland, which is the page for suggesting changes in that article. DES (talk) 14:45, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Talk:Republic of Ireland would usually be the place to discuss the name but in this case it has already been discussed extensively and the page has the box Template:IECOLL-talk which says where to discuss it. See also the "Frequently Asked Questions" box at Talk:Republic of Ireland which only has one question: "Why isn't this article titled Ireland?" Editing a German wiki page

I've been asked to update a German page:

de:Sicpa

I've made the edits but can't seem to put the changes live. It says I have 'unmarked changes' or 'unsighted changes' and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. My German is pretty non-existent.

There seems to be a slightly different way of working on the Germn Wiki site to the UK and I can't work it out.

Any help gratefully received.

This page is about help with using the English-language Wikipedia, so we can't always be of much help with other language versions of Wikipedia. They are separate projects. However, there is a feature, known as "pending changes" on the English language version, which can be activated for particular pages. When it is active, new edits from unregistered users and, I think, users who are registered but not autoconfirmed, are held in a pending status until another editor accepts them. This is designed as an anti-vandalism tool. The en wikipedia makes very little use of this feature. I believe that the de Wikipedia makes more use of it, and it sounds to me as if this is what you encountered. DES (talk) 14:51, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you have done nothing wrong. Your edit was saved [7] but hasn't been reviewed yet. This means unregistered users and some registered users will not see the edit at the normal article view https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sicpa until a German editor reviews it and either accepts or rejects it. I cannot say when this will happen. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:00, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks guys. Can I ask a quick follow-up question. Is this simply a matter of time or is there anything I can do to alert someone that I've made changes? Cheers. Iain.iainplunkett (talk) 15:04, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's automatically added to a list where interested German editors can find it, but there are lots of pending changes. If I read the logs correctly then the oldest are 12 days but only a few are above 9 days and may have been skipped by some editors due to complications. I don't know their practices but some editors probably work through the list from the oldest, while others may unpredictably come by a random pending change and review it before a chronological editor gets there. Unless your change is critical like removing serious vandalism, defamation or copyright violations, you are just expected to wait. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:24, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think that any time that an editor with the right to approve such changes views or edits or looks at the page history of the page, that editor will be prompted to consider reviewing and approving or declining the changes. Such an editor could ignore the prompt, but I suspect most would approve routine changes, well, routinely. DES (talk) 15:26, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

in the midst of editing an article and cannot seem to locate it to work on it.

hi, I was in the midst of creating an article, I opted to see preview. Now I want to edit it and cannot seem to get back to the article, how can I find it. I had not saved it because I was still editing it. Thanks, Cindy — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cterzian (talkcontribs) 10:48, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid if you didn't save, it is not saved on Wikipedia. When you preview, a view of what the page would look like if saved is shown at the top, and the editing box is at the bottom. If that page is still displayed in your browser, scroll down and the edit box may well still be there. if it isn't you may be able to use browser navigation to return to the preview, and your browser may still have your text in memory. Good luck. DES (talk) 15:55, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What's a respectable period of time between requesting page moves?

There was a page move requested over at Sega v. Accolade recently, which was closed on November 13th as no consensus. Then it was re-requested on November 15th. There appears to be some background between editors regarding the motives for such a request being raised again, but I'm curious as I can't find any reference in the page move articles that suggests how long a gap should be before moves are sensibly requested again. For the record, (as I state on the page) I was non-commital on the initial move, but am against it on the re-request as I feel that it's inappropriately soon, and smacks of "keep requesting until we get a desired outcome".

Although not required (this ain't ANI) I will inform the editors via the talk page that I've brought this up here. Chaheel Riens (talk) 17:58, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There is no formal policy, but making repeated requests when there is no reasonable chance of consensus having changed is disruption. The appropriate response is (1) first let the editor who does it know, via a polite talk page message, that you consider it disruptive, (2) if it continues, let the editor know, via a polite but firm talk page message, that continuing the activity will force you to file a report at ANI, (3) if it still continues, file a report at ANI asking for administrative action. Avoid being rude or showing emotion, and don't make your messages any longer than they need to be, and don't let yourself get sucked into unproductive arguments. Looie496 (talk) 18:51, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't the one who proposed it, but I believe that since the closer of the first proposal ignored my !vote pretty much, that it felt there may have been a chance for consensus. Though I was surprised at the sudden re-proposal as well, and I'm glad you've checked up on how appropriate it is or isn't, Caheel. This does relax that lingering question I had in my mind if it was okay for the proposer (who wasn't the original proposer either), to bring it up again after only a couple days.--SexyKick 19:06, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That's out of scope of my original question. I want to know whether there is a process or state of grace between the original proposal, and the re-raising of it. Chaheel Riens (talk) 22:35, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

alpha with spiritus lenis?

Where can I find the greek letter alpha with spiritus lenis please? Special characters do not contain this combined sign... Thanx! HilmarHansWerner (talk) 02:00, 19 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Selecting "Greek" in the drop-down box below the edit box gives various characters including ἀ and ἁ. They can also be made with ἀ and ἁ, or by copy-pasting them from somewhere. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:19, 19 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
thank you, but a) with "drop down box below the edit box" you seem to mean the drop down menu below "special characters"; there I can NOT find the desired sign... b) there seems to be a problem if you work on an android tablet: I can see only boxes here where you entered your letters... in the edit-mode; in the normal view-mode I see nothing... c) can you please say where you found the code for the signs you gave?! and how do I implement the code so that I see the desired combined (!) sign (alpha with the spiritus above it) in the normal mode? thanks! HilmarHansWerner (talk) 14:44, 19 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know what Android users see but I wouldn't be surprised if they often have a more limited character set than typical PC users. If a character isn't in a character set then a program has to either ignore it or display something else, for example a box. I'm talking about below and not above the edit box. In a PC browser I see MediaWiki:Edittools below the edit box. That's where I select "Greek". I use the external site http://rishida.net/tools/conversion/ for character conversions. If I copy-paste ἀ to the "Characters" field and click "Convert" then "Decimal NCRs" shows ἀ. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:36, 19 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
thanks a lot indeed! I'm now working with my PC and - low and behold - I can see the alphas... poor android... and now I also found where you toogle to "greek", i.e. in the drop down box that reads initially "insert"... and indeed: the character-set shown there on android is much more limited than on a PC. and the unicode-converter is a useful thing! :-) --HilmarHansWerner (talk) 21:06, 19 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Husband lives after being diagnosed with Acinar Cell Carcinoma of the Pancreas

Hi there, My husband at 37years was diagnosed with Acinar Cell Carcinoma of the Pancreas. On the 3/11/2013 he turned 60years. This tumor had evaded the duodenum and small bowel and encapsulated the main Aorta and two suspect places in the liver. He refuses Chemo and Radiation at the time. At the time of leaving hospital was given a 5% chance of living 1year and 1% chance of living 5years. Told we would have a 1% chance of having any more children. He beat both odds. Creating a New Article

Morning All,

I work on behalf of two large Canadian insurance brands who are referenced several times throughout related Wikipedia pages but don't actually have articles of their own. These are both very well known companies but I don't want to create articles for them as my understanding is that it's against guidelines for someone affiliated with a company to create a page. Can I make a request here for someone else to write the article? Is it okay if I do it myself?

Of course it would be entirely non promotional. We could also provide all the facts/information needed in the same format of other non-promotional company pages.

Please let me know what the best way to proceed is.

Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.225.179.220 (talk) 15:24, 19 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Generally speaking (and especially at the moment, when paid editing is something of a hot topic among Wikipedians) adding an article about a company you work for or are affiliated with is very strongly discouraged. The best course of action would be to submit the two companies at Requested articles, so that an uninvolved editor can take a look at them and write the appropriate articles. Yunshui 15:36, 19 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You seem to be aware of policies such as WP:COI etc, so a reasonable way forward is to create an account, state your COI and intent on your userpage, and then suggest/create the article at WP:AFC. Success is not guaranteed, but if the companies are very well known it should be possible. Please keep asking questions as necessary, either here or at WP:TEAHOUSE. Good luck! Thanks so much for your reply - the companies are definitely very well known! Given that this is strongly discouraged would you recommend that I make the request rather than submit an article for consideration? I´ll give you my opinion, which is just that. Wikipedians like to create content of our own choosing, so I think going via WP:RA is less likely to accomplish something. Using WP:AFC and actually creating the article for consideration will probably give some result/response quicker. If you write a flowery ad it will not be accepted. Many Wikipedians (with good reason) might frown upon and be suspicious about what you write, but also reluctantly admit that at least in theory, an article created by you can be acceptable for inclusion, so it´s not actually FORBIDDEN that you try (I´m fairly certain I´m right about that). I hope this helps. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:05, 19 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, I like the statement on your userpage. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:10, 19 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Basically, using Requested articles is saying "here is an interesting subject, would someone please write an article on it for me?" while using Articles for Creation says "Here is a draft of an article, would you please look it over and tell me if it is good enough, and perhaps help me improve it?" You see the difference? DES (talk) 17:58, 19 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well, simply speaking, those links are red because their user pages or user talk pages don't exist (yet). The way to "fix" that is by creating their user page or talk page, but I would strongly recommend that you do not create a user's talk page just to turn a red link blue, and definitely do not do it for their user page. If they want a redlinked (i.e. nonexistent) userpage, that's their choice. Writ Keeper 18:53, 19 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Or theoretically, since users can change the colors (as well as just about anything else) about their sig, they could make their sig so that it has proper links to their existing user page and talk page, but the color of those letters is in red). I don't think there is anything in policy against it, but it would be annoying.Naraht (talk) 18:58, 19 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I can't confirm whether the second source really refers to the time of the marriage, as I can't get the Google Books snippet to scroll further down. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 21:14, 19 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, I found many sources saying they married in 1924 or 1925 and divorced in 1926, but now I also find many sources saying they married in 1926 or 1927 and divorced in 1933. The latter sources look more reliable. Your first link says 1933 and not 1938. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:16, 19 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Songs of Praise

In the article on the BBC program Songs of Praise there is a section entitled Assailant: The family of murder victim Billy Barclay criticised the programme for allowing his killer Garry Brotherston to appear on the show. On the programme, Brotherston said that he had "found God" while serving 11 years for Barclay's murder, and has now released an album.

This contributes nothing to the article but has been added as a personal attack on Mr Brotherstone. The tragic events of a gang fight 20 years ago really have no bearing on Songs of Praise. Mr Brotherstone served 11 years in prison for his crime which he committed as a teenager. The family of the victim are of course deeply hurt by such events, but the attempt to continually harass Mr Brotherstone should not be pursued through Wikipedia — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.9.192.202 (talk) 00:31, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This Help Desk is for questions about how to edit Wikipedia. This is a reasonable place to ask how to address a content issue about Songs of Praise. The answer is to discuss it on the article talk page, Talk:Songs of Praise. Robert McClenon (talk) 03:07, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia generally report events that are notable. If you think that this event is not sufficiently notable to be included into the article, you can use the talk page as was mentioned above. In this particular case mentioning this controversy especially in a separate section may not be justified indeed. Ruslik_Zero 03:20, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
As the article was structured when you saw it, with a full stand alone section called "Assailant", it was not appropriate since it definitely gave too much emphasis to a single incident. I have changed the article to have a standard "Reception and impact" section that was missing, and included this incident amongst some of the other content of the same nature. Inclusion of the Brotherstone incident may still may be WP:UNDUE weight, or not, or it might be simply that we need to fill in more on the Reception and Impact since a program going for over 50 years has had more impact than is presently recorded in the article. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 04:45, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
On second review, given the fact that it was sources to the Daily Record tabloid (wow!) removal on that ground alone would be appropriate. And a google news search revealed no other hits so it definitely appears to be an incident of little note, so I have moved it to the talk page pending better coverage. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 12:21, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Project

Hello, I am working on the article Eratosthenes and I really want to clean up my citations that are placed in the notes section. I want to combine the sources that are used through out the article. As of right now when I cite the citation adds yet another note although I had used the same source earlier. Is there anyway I could be able to make these come together? I need to cite throughout, but I do not want to the bibliography/notes section to be repetitive! Thank youToothFairyJenny (talk) 04:40, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I believe you can use footnotes for that. Cheers! SwisterTwister talk 04:45, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I fixed one of them for you, to give you an example of how to do it. Unfortunately I screwed up on my first attempt, so you will see that it took me two edits to get it right. (Basically the trick is to give a "name" to a reference -- you can then repeat it by giving the same name.) Looie496 (talk) 04:52, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
In the cite menu on the edit window there is a label entitled Named references and has a clipboard. If you click that it you get a drop down of all the named references to make it easier for you. When you are putting in the reference through the template you can provide the name as well. XFEM Skier (talk) 05:06, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c)see Wikipedia:CITE#Repeated_citations. rather than the <ref> tag at the start of the citation use <ref name="X"> then whenever you want to cite using that source again, rather than the full ref, you just use <ref name="X/"> (note the close slash at the end)-- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 05:38, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of Copyright Warning

I am having difficulty establishing copyright and licensing status for three images: File:General layout of an advanced inflow steam engine.png File:Uniflow Engine Section Details.png File:Constant Diameter Cylinder and Piston.png

Dan Gelbart, author, assigned these diagrams to the free license "Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported" and GNU Free Documentation License. This authorization was sent on November 17, 2013 to permissions-en@wikimedia.org

However, a notice on the images states: "This file does not have information on its copyright and licensing status. Unless the copyright and licensing status is provided, the image will be deleted after Wednesday, 27 November 2013. Please remove this template if a correct copyright license tag has been added."

After Gelbart assigned the images to the Creative Commons, I re-uploaded the images, so they may be shown in the Wikipedia article Advanced Uniflow Steam Engine. I listed the images as Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported. I do not know how to add a correct copyright license tag. Can you help me? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Guy Immega (talkcontribs) 05:31, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

if the images are on commons, you can just link directly to them, don't bother uploading them to Wikipedia. I misread your comment.-- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 05:40, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Since the images were previously deleted by Wikipedia editor Diannaa, I re-uploaded them after Gelbart assigned copyright to the commons. What do i do now to remove the copyright warning so the images will not be deleted again on 27 Nov? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Guy Immega (talkcontribs) 06:21, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The owner of the copyright will need to follow the process outlined here WP:DONATEIMAGE. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 12:28, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How do I save...

Hello, when I search for something like...Channing Tatum, how do I save the search or page for later review? I love to look stuff up but am not always able to read it all at one time but don't want to forget about it, can I make it a favorite or save it for later? — Preceding unsigned comment added by LunaFaye13 (talkcontribs) 06:41, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There are a couple things you could do.
• You could bookmark the article like you would any other web page on the Internet.
• You could create a Wikipedia Book. See WP:BOOKS
• You could edit your user page to include a list of favorite articles.
And though some people would possibly suggest adding the article to your watchlist, that's normally just used for keeping track of what changes were made to the articles that you're watching and not generally used as a way to remember all your favorite articles.
Hope this helps, Dismas|(talk) 08:52, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I am messaging you in regards to an article that I have posted on an artist that requested for me to add his info, including his bio and his latest album, which I have created a page about him as to add thte next page later. I took information from his facebook which is indentical to his website, but I can assure you that I have full consent from him to do so. I can also send you links, social network links etc. to back up that I myself own full copyright of the said album review/info. Please help me, it would be greatly appreciated, I am new to this and am just getting started, thankyou. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Spexx23 DKS (talkcontribs) 09:24, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Your stating here that you have his consent to place the material here is not enough. Wikipedia will require proof that the owner of the copyright has released it so that it can be used. And as the material you have copied is anyway unacceptably promotional, it would be better to rewrite it – I have made a start on this. However, you have a bigger problem. The article as it is does nothing to demonstrate that its subject is notable, in Wikipedia's sense. Unless someone can change the article so that it demonstrates his notability, it will be deleted. See WP:BIO for guidance on how you might be able to do this. Maproom (talk) 10:21, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Life and Education

The son of underachieved Congolese Politician André Moke Mingoy, Gustave Moke was born in Kinshasa in 1976. He attended ‘’Saint Gabriél’’ Elementary School and ‘’Saint Pierre’’ Secondary School, in Kinshasa. He received a B.A in ‘’Linguistics and Philosophy from the ‘’Faculté Catholique de Kinshasa’’ (Catholics University in Kinshasa).

Career

He started his journalism career in 1999 with the ‘’AZAP’’ (Zaire News Agency), which is today ‘’ACP’’ (L’Agence Congolaise de Presse). In same year he joined ‘’La Cloche’’ Newspaper as political editor. Do I have to wait 4 days for my account to be confirmed before I can change the new logo of the company, even though it is public (new website) that the current logo (on Wikipedia) is old? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.72.98.29 (talk) 11:53, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Alternatively, you can make a request at Wikipedia:Files for upload (although editors will sometimes do it if you ask here, provided you can give a URL of where the logo can be found, and which article it relates to).
If you decide to wait, please note that your account also needs to have made 10 edits, and that the edits you have already made as an IP do not count towards either the time, or the number. Arjayay (talk) 12:26, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How long does speedy deletion usually take?

I wanted to move the Metrosideros excelsa article to Pōhutukawa (per WP:COMMONNAME), but the redirect at Pōhutukawa prevented me from doing it. I added {{db-move}} to get the page deleted, but that has stopped the redirect from working properly (which has about 55 links to it). I'm not complaining at all, but it's been about 33 hours and I'm just curious how long these things usually take. Thanks. TimofKingsland (talk) 12:48, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
