The 2015 Tour de France is the 102nd edition of the Tour de France. It started in Utrecht, Netherlands, on 4 July 2015, at 14:00 CEST.[2] It is the eighteenth race of the 2015 UCI World Tour.[3]
It was the sixth time the Tour de France started in the Netherlands, after 1954 (Amsterdam), 1973 (Scheveningen), 1978 (Leiden), 1996 ('s-Hertogenbosch) and 2010 (Rotterdam). This is a record for a country that has no direct border with France.
Rule changes
Time bonuses make a comeback for the 2015 edition of the race. In the first part of the Tour, stages from second to eighth, the three first finishers of stages will earn bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds respectively. Bonuses are not awarded for time trial stages. Sprint competition points system will also change. A stage win will be worth 50 points instead of 45, second place awards 30 instead of 35 and third 20 instead of 30. The sprint points rule change is aimed to make a stage win more valuable.[4] This new points system will be in effect only on the six flat stages of the Tour (Stages 2, 5, 6, 7, 15 and 21). On seven stages (the cobble stage and six hillier stages, namely Stages 3, 4, 8, 10, 13, 14 and 16) the rider who wins will receive 25 points, 22 for the second rider, and so on.[5] For the mountain stages and the opening time trial, (Stages 1, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 20) the winner will receive 20 points. No points will be awarded on Stage nine's team time trial.[6]
Tour statistics
The Tour has a complicated organization and a lot of personnel are working so the race can go on its way. Apart from the 198 riders, the teams bring with them approximately 300 staff members in all. Three countries will be visited by the Tour, 26 French departments and there will be 37 stage cities, either for the start of a stage or a finish. There also will be 624 municipalities crossed in the whole race.[7]
There will be one hundred Amaury Sport Organisation staffers present, with 300 temporary workers. Overall, 1,550 beds will be reserved every day to accommodate riders and staff. Ten doctors of all specialties will be allocated to the Tour as well as five nurses. They will be supported by seven ambulances, two race medical cars and a radiology truck. In the security department, 48 members of the Republican Guard motorcycle division will follow the Tour as well as 13 officers employed by the Tour. 14,000 gendarmes and 9,000 police officers will be allocated to the event at one point or another.[7]
92 television networks will broadcast the event, 637 media organizations will follow the Tour composed of an estimated 2,000 journalists, consultants and photographers. The Tour will be broadcast in 190 countries and eight stages will be brought to the viewers in full. In 2014, the official website of the Tour de France received 32 million unique visitors. The publicity caravan will include 154 vehicles representing 34 brands. The caravan alone will employ 600 people, hand out 14 million objects to the crowd and will be 12 kilometers long.[7]
Teams
The organizer, Amaury Sport Organization, announced a list of the five teams invited on 14 January 2015.[8] 22 teams will participate in this Tour de France: 17 UCI World Tour Teams and five Professional continental teams. The number of riders allowed per squad is nine, therefore the field will have a maximum of 198 riders.[7] The teams are:

Route and stages
The first stage was announced on 28 November 2013[18] whilst the second and start of the third stage were confirmed on 24 May 2014. The route for the remainder of the Tour was unveiled by race director Christian Prudhomme on 22 October 2014 at the Palais des Congrès in Paris. It contained one individual time trial event. There were seven stages defined as mountainous, six of which had summit finishes: Stage 10 (to La Pierre St Martin), Stage 11 (to Cauterets), Stage 12 (to Plateau de Beille), Stage 17 (to Pra Loup), Stage 19 (to La Toussuire - Les Sybelles),and Stage 20 (to Alpe d'Huez). Stages 3 and 8, although classified hilly, finished at Mur de Huy and Mûr-de-Bretagne, respectively, whilst the medium-mountain stage 14 ended at the fr. As is customary in recent years, the organizers included two rest days. When compared to the previous year's race, the race was 305.2 km (190 mi) shorter, contained the same number of rest days as well as the same amount of individual time trials.
Four stages will start or finish outside France, due to the Grand Départ. Stage 1 was held in Utrecht in The Netherlands. Utrecht also held the start of stage 2, which finished in Neeltje Jans, also in the Netherlands. Stage 3 moves the tour to Belgium, starting in Antwerp and ending in Huy. Lastly, stage 4 will start in Seraing.
On Thursday, 25 June, it was announced that due to landslides, the route of stage 20 would be changed, bypassing the Col du Galibier and instead climbing the Col de la Croix de Fer.[19] The stage distance, however, remained intact.

Race overview
The race started with an individual time trial around Utrecht. Rohan Dennis won the stage and set the record for the fastest average speed in a time trial at the Tour, with 55.446 km/h (34.5 mph).[20] On stage 2, the yellow jersey changed hands to Fabian Cancellara as the winds formed echelons of riders and caused time splits.[21] The stage was won by André Greipel.[22]
Classification leadership
There are four main individual classifications contested in the 2015 Tour de France, as well as a team competition. The most important is the general classification, which is calculated by adding each cyclist's finishing times on each stage. The cyclist with the least accumulated time is the race leader, identified by the yellow jersey; the winner of this classification will be considered the winner of the Tour. In 2015, time bonuses return, with 10 seconds for the stage winner, 6 for second place and 4 for third place on each stage.
The points classification awards a green jersey. In the points classification, cyclists get points for finishing among the best in a stage finish, or in intermediate sprints. The cyclist with the most points leads the classification, and is identified with a green jersey.[23]
The mountains classification is a special points competition awarded to those riders who climb the most difficult ascents the fastest. The organisation categorises some climbs as either hors catégorie, first, second, third, or fourth-category; points for this classification are won by the first cyclists that reach the top of these climbs, with more points available for the higher-categorized climbs. The rider with the most mountain points is awarded a polka dot jersey.[23] There are also two special awards, the Souvenir Henri Desgrange given to first rider over the highest climb in the Tour and the Souvenir Jacques Goddet, given to the first rider to pass Jacques Goddet's memorial on the Col du Tourmalet. They do not award any points for the mountains classification, but give a cash prize of €5000. The Souvenir Henri Desgrange this year was scheduled to be on the Col du Galibier in stage 20, but, nine days before the race start, it was announced that the climb would not be used. The Col d'Allos serves as the Souvenir Henri Desgrange, instead.
The young rider classification, denoted by a white jersey, is calculated the same way as the general classification, but the classification is restricted to riders who were born on or after 1 January 1990.[23]
The team classification is calculated using the finishing times of the best three cyclists per team on each stage; the leading team is the team with the lowest total time. The riders in the team that lead this classification are identified with yellow numbers and helmets.
In addition, there is a combativity award, given after each stage to the cyclist considered to be the most combative rider that day (except for time trials and the final stage); it is awarded by a jury vote. The winner wears red numbers on the back of his jersey the following day. At the conclusion of the Tour de France, the cyclist who has received the most total votes across all stages is recognized as the most combative rider of the entire Tour.
