  • Thomas Adams (1818-1905) – invented chewing gum; founder of the chewing gum industry, later teamed up with William Wrigley Jr; lived on Staten Island in the 1860s–1870s
  • Charles Goodyear – inventor; lived on Staten Island for several years; experimented with rubber 1836–39 on Staten Island; that business failed and he moved to Boston; patented the vulcanization of rubber in the 1840s
  • Gustave Mayer – inventor of the Nilla wafer, later popularized by Nabisco
  • Antonio Meucci – inventor of the telephone; immigrated to Staten Island, settling in the Clifton area in 1850, where he lived for the remainder of his life

  • Father Vincent Capodanno – Chaplain, Lieutenant, United States Navy; Congressional Medal of Honor recipient
  • Ichabod Crane – US Army Colonel during the War of 1812; the nominal inspiration for the fictional protagonist in Washington Irving's Legend of Sleepy Hollow; buried in Staten Island
  • Thomas D Doubleday – Wall Street merchant; Colonel in Civil War; lived in Port Richmond; brother of Abner Doubleday
