When to propose a merger

Main page: Wikipedia:Merging

There are three types of mergers on Wikipedia:

1): Mergers that are so obviously necessary and appropriate that no one is expected to object;
2): Mergers that would benefit from discussion with the other editors at the affected articles' Talk page about whether and/or how to perform the merge; and
3): Mergers that are controversial, potentially difficult to carry out, or where at least one affected article is either rated Class B or higher or is over 100K in size will need assistance from uninvolved editor(s) in determining whether to merge the pages.

If the pages that you would like to merge fall into the type 1 group above, then it is not necessary to propose a merger at all. You should boldly do the merger now, without formally proposing it. (In the event that someone unexpectedly objects, then the merger can be undone easily, and you can formally propose the merger for discussion at that time.)

How to propose a merger

If the merge falls into the type 2 group or type 3 group above, then proposing a merger can be done in three steps (as the proposer, you should still be willing to carry-out a type 2 merge):

  • Step 1: Create a place for discussion. Go to the Talk Page (also known as the discussion page) of the target article (the one you want to merge to) and create a section (eg: "Merger proposal") to discuss the merger. If there's already a discussion on the talk page regarding the merger, you can omit this step. Whether the discussion is new or old, make sure the discussion section names all articles involved and links to them. The section name can be anything that includes the word merge (for example ==Merger discussion==).
  • Step 2: Put one of the Merge Request Banners (MRB) at the top of the articles you wish to be merged. The merge request templates {{Merge from}} and {{Merge to}}, or {{merge}} are the most common banners used. Remember to make sure that the Discuss link in each tag points to the same section you've created in step 1 (this is to prevent having two separate discussions going on at two different talk pages). (Merge Request Banners should NEVER be placed on article TalkPages.
  • Step 3: If the proposed merge is type 3 (above) follow the directions under #Requests for merge assistance and feedback to add it to the list.)

Requests for merge assistance and feedback

If you need outside feedback regarding mergers that are either tricky or of a controversial nature, please do the following:

  • Tag the article as shown above
  • Create a discussion as shown above
  • Notify the talk page of the appropriate Wikiproject to get knowledgeable people to comment on it. (To find out which Wikiproject the page is associated with, check the associated talk page. It should be tagged with a template, such as Wikipedia:WikiProject Ice Hockey.)
  • If there is consensus to merge, but the merge is difficult, request help at Merge Talk for assistance.

For other topics:

  • If you need help with renaming or moving, consult Wikipedia:Moving a page.
  • Cut-and-paste move fixes: If you have moved an article by this deprecated method, then you need to request page histories to be merged; list them at requests for history merge. Please do not perform further moves by cut and paste.

NOTE: Please do not re-list old merge proposals that are already tagged and in the "to Merge" queue (including requests made up to two years ago), as these will be handled as we get to them. -Project Merge

If you need assistance with proposing a merge, list it below and someone will make sure it's properly listed. Note that this will not get the merge completed, as there is a large merge backlog.   • Merge Heidelberg University Faculty of Theology into Heidelberg University#Organization#Faculties. All of the content in the former article is already included in the parent article and a merge is necessary per WP:Overlap. There really isn't a need to actually transfer any text, as it is already in the target article (but with greater detail). All that is needed is a redirect. There was a recent AFD at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Heidelberg University Faculty of Theology which closed as no consensus. I note that the translation tag is misleading as it links to an article about Heidelberg University in the German wiki and has almost nothing to say about the institution's faculty of theology.     •  Not done Please don't FORUMSHOP an undesired discussion result. Although I would agree with you on the need for a merge in this case, the AfD discussion was just closed yesterday, and merging was one of the considerations in that dialogue. I understand the frustration, and if you feel that strongly about the duplication of content, I'd suggest you give it some time (as there are no deadlines in Wikipedia) and consider another merge request, or, perhaps, a BOLD merge down the line.   • Merge: I propose merging Rocky Marciano (film) into the main Rocky Marciano article. The film article is little more than a mirror of the IMDB entry and being singly sourced, does not show SIGCOV. Could easily be turned into a small section of the main article without losing anything valuable.   • Merge: International Association for Energy Economics with Energy economics. The page for this association has been tagged with multiple issues for five years: COI, ADVERT, single source, and lack of multiple sources. The only issue that's been resolved in several years is the removal of copyvio from the Association's official website. Current sources for this article are almost entirely links to this organization, its publications, and its affiliate organizations. The exceptions were to one third party summary of an IAEE publication and to one Archive.org page, which appears to have tried to reference an affiliate IAEE chapter but instead pulls up an unrelated page of old movie posters. Although this organization ought to be notable--it's nearly fifty years old and has legitimate academics on its council--it keeps such a low profile that there doesn't seem to be enough independent third party coverage to rewrite this obvious PR piece into an encyclopedic article. If anyone wants to try, here are the sources I was able to dig up.[1][2] Most of the search engine returns resolved to primary sources or the LinkedIn pages of individuals affiliated with the organization. Since there doesn't seem to be a prospect of a reasonably encyclopedic article about this association itself, propose merging salvageable content into the general topic of Energy economics. Requests answered in August 2023
  • Merge SVDK to SVD (rifle). The SVDK is a variant of the SVD chambered of a different calibre. Per WP:Firearms, Variants of a model of a firearm such as folding/telescoping stock variants, target versions, variants chambered in a new caliber, compact/carbine variants, models covered by the same factory-issued users manual generally should not receive their own article. Instead, use a section for the variant in the parent firearm's article or consolidate it into a table or the text. Contents from the SVDK should be merged to the SVD, since the SVD is the parent firearm. JTC22 (talk) 13:08, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Several other articles describing the game's expansions have already been merged into the main page, so it makes sense to merge the rest as well to keep things consistent. The other articles have also been described as not being notable enough to stand on their own, so it follows that the ones in the merger request don't either.     • Cmnt: I think a discussion about these expansion sets would be better served at AfD: none have sourcing (just Ext Links), not a one in-line citation is found, and little—if any—notability on their own is indicated. If they aren't merged soon, I think they'll be gone pretty quick.
