KLUC-FM is a commercial radio station located in Las Vegas, Nevada, broadcasting on 98.5 FM. KLUC airs a Rhythmic Top 40 (CHR) music format.
History
98.5 KLUC has been a long time Top 40 station in Las Vegas. They were originally owned by Western Cities, sold to Nationwide in 1985, ARS in 1995, and then CBS Radio who owns them today.
Up until 1978 they simulcasted with sister station 1140 AM. They briefly returned to a simulcast in 1990. From the mid-1970s to 1983, KLUC was a rock leaning Top 40. During the early 1980s, KLUC would often boycott urban crossovers; for example, "Celebration" by Kool and the Gang. In 1977 KLUC experimented with a "Disco Format" in the evenings but it was short lived. This changed in the fall of 1983 when KLUC added a lot of R&B and dance music product. KLUC "leaned dance" through the rest of the 1980s and early 1990s before officially shifting to Rhythmic CHR in 1993. Through their many years of being a rhythmic KLUC would occasionally add big pop crossover hits. This was especially true during the late 1990s when KLUC heavily played the boy bands that were popular during that era.
At one time in the 1970s and early 1980s, KLUC had studios located on the Howard Hughes property at the Frontier Hotel.
When KFMS changed from top 40 to rhythmic top 40 in 2002 (they are now a Mexican Adult Hits station as KWID), KLUC changed to a more CHR Top-40 format versus a previous Rhythmic format, but still continue to report to Mediabase and Nielsen BDS as a Rhythmic reporter because KLUC still heavily favors Rhythmic artists. Most recently, KLUC added more of a variety of Top-40 artists like Miley Cyrus, Maroon 5, Taylor Swift, One Republic, Jesse McCartney, Metro Station, Katy Perry, Jason Mraz, Kevin Rudolf and the Jonas Brothers, but most of the pop acts were dropped. By 2009, KLUC-FM reverted back to rhythmic top 40 when KFRH flipped to top 40, and also regarding KPLV acquiring a more top 40 format after being a rhythmic AC station, only to later shift to Rhythmic Top 40 by Summer 2010. KLUC also has competition from KVEG, which started out with a Hip-Hop heavy Rhythmic direction but has since moved into the same presentation as KLUC and KPLV. Another competitor, albeit less a factor, is Dance KVBE.
