: Smiling at your interpretation ;) - Don't advertise votes, but if you can advertise the thoughts, fine. For votes, go by Bishzilla, just double her line if needed. I - needless to say - didn't vote by answers alone, but by knowledge of the candidates. I supported the ones with some bold (Cas Drm Kei Kel Opa Tim), and opposed all others. As I said on the talk: I can't support an arb who voted for desysopping Yngvadottir. Everybody is free of course to draw different conclusions. I added some footnotes today, one being my surprise that nobody questioned my opening statement of question 1: "Arbitration findings and the wishes of principal editors govern the use of infoboxes in articles." They could all have said: "Really? How awful!" - Anyway, there was an interesting close, reopen, and then the wiki broke ;) - I have a banner on my user page for the secret slogan of Opabinia regalis: "Readers come first." --[[User:Gerda Arendt|Gerda Arendt]] ([[User talk:Gerda Arendt|talk]]) 18:09, 1 December 2015 (UTC) |

Sounds like perhaps somebody broke in through Windows Remote Desktop. It's supposed to let a technician fix your computer from afar, but if hackers tricked you into letting them in through that door, they could take full control over your computer as you describe and install any type of awful spyware / malware / viruses they wanted to. You really need to either reinstall Windows or just buy a new computer, imo. Zeng8r (talk) 16:31, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Boyar WeddingI only chose the painting because it looked nice... Now I'm getting sucked into researching it! ;-) I am going to the Smithsonian next week and, time permitting, will try to see the painting at Hillwood Estate (and ask if they have additional information). I'm finding all sorts of articles from the early 1900s (beyond what I've added to the refs already) and need to figure out how to organize the material. Here's a fun "fact" (but I want to find a second source to confirm it)- the American collector who bought the painting from the artist outbid the Tsar of Russia...--Godot13 (talk) 06:46, 31 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

- ^ This is an exceedingly rough translation of Gerda's thinking, which necessarily involves a lot of guesswork and reading between the lines; she gives no explicit support-column, and no explicit oppose-column either. Those marked as Y++ were ones where she boldfaced their answers as being supported, the others are mostly spectrum-guesstimates, which are then re-calibrated to vaguely match the available slots.
Gerda, let me know if you want to be "advertised" (which does not require a colorized chart), or even advertised-and-also-in-the-signpost. Best, 75.108.94.227 (talk) 14:15, 1 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If you wanna write one, you can. User:Hafspajen/ACE2015, it's not hard, just pick somebody else's and then make your own list of reasons to support and reasons to thump. No cat-lovers on arbcom. For sure. I'm maybe gonna write one, if you just wanna decorate something, and not "work". And will be asking some other people to write their own voterguides, respectable types like User:Dennis Brown, not canine-crazy artistaz like you dear Haffy. I mean, dear Mandy. - Don't forget Iridescent's easy guide: vote for Cas and Opinia, oppose the others. Not my strategy though, would leave too much influence for those we have already, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:23, 20 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
- Added, thanks. But Gerda, you are mis-interpreting what Iridescent was saying -- specifically this bit ...
...there are a few weak "make up the numbers" supports...
- That implies Iridescent is fully behind Casliber and Opabinia, and for *this election* at least, is also mostly behind Drmies, Keilana, and Timtrent. Which is only five of the nine open seats, so there is also a list of Weak Opposes, seven other folks that are the "lesser of two weevils [with the implication they are competing for a singly hypothetical open seat]" as is often said[citation needed] in the USA and the UK, where first past the post voting system is commonly employed. Arbcom elections use a kind of approval voting, so the phrase is not exactly applicable in a parallel fashion... something more like "lesser of seventeen weevils competing for the remaining four open seats". As I read her recommendation, Iridescent is giving StrongSupport for two people, WeakSupport for three more people, and WeakOpposeButBetterThanTheAlteratives to an additional four-to-seven candidates. Pinging Iridescent, in case they with to set our conflicting reading of the tea-leaves straight. 75.108.94.227 (talk) 11:37, 21 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
- More accurate to say the first category is "definitely support", the second is "I can see serious problems and ordinarily wouldn't support, but will probably be better than an empty chair", the third is "will oppose but could be persuaded" and the fourth is "hell, no". There's absolutely no need to feel one needs to support nine people just because there are nine slots; there are advantages to broader representation, but also disadvantages. (Ever tried to participate in a fifteen-way conversation by email? It isn't pleasant.) It won't be a disaster by any means if only two, one or even no candidates reach the 50% mark, particularly in a year like this which IMO has the worst group of candidates since the days of Jimbo unilaterally appointing his drinking buddies; Arbcom could function perfectly well with three members, let alone ten. ‑ iridescent 11:53, 21 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
- Okay thanks, that helps clarify. I think that the pool *is* reasonably strong this year, though I do think that plenty of people who should have run, and were arm-twisted to do so, could have made it even stronger. *cough*ahem*hack*hrrmm, pardon me, just clearing my throat.
- Perhaps the evidence of 664 emails per day may have scared off some of the potentials; most common reason I heard for not running was "no time". Second most common was "not wanting to be trolled/doxxed/etc" which is probably more crucial of a flaw, but also a very tough problem to truly solve. I think part of the reason to have such a large committee, besides the need to have a reserve-group for when people retire midway through their arb-terms, is so that tasks can be divvied up ('many hands make light work')... but of course, arbcom is horrid at divvying things up (see the recent elimination of WP:BASC), so instead tasks get over-analyzed and too-much-conversation-not-enough-action ('too many cooks in the kitchen').

- Be that as it may, I think your top-five are exceedingly likely to become arbs, including the first non-admin arb, from reading the voter-guide tea leaves. Inertia, and tactical voting, probably means that the other four seats also will be filled, though I'm detecting the whiff of an extremely strong antidisestablishmentarian sentiment in the wiki-air this time around. 75.108.94.227 (talk) 15:04, 21 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
- See my comments here for my thoughts on both how to address the over-large and over-worked committee issue, and on predictions. Basically, attempting to call this election is a fool's errand, as the talkpage-spamming of 100,000 users to vote means all bets are off. The 'electorate' in most Wiki processes consists of those with an interest and knowledge of the topic, whereas this one is going to be decided by an electorate of whom many aren't even aware Arbcom exists, and most have little idea what it actually does; consequently, the winners are likely to be the candidates who can spout the most convincing sounding platitudes, rather than those who are best suited to the job. ‑ iridescent 00:14, 22 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
