I am looking for the ten yr. budget from 2001 thru 2011 for jennings county, in.(each year).— Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.212.53.57 (talkcontribs)

The county's website is located at http://www.jenningscounty-in.gov/index.php . There is a "contact us" link; someone there would likely be able to help you. --Jayron32 03:10, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Clarence Earl Gideon

is it possible to add CLARENCE EARL GIDEON to the list of Hannibal, Mo residents? He was the subject of the landmark Supreme court case, Gideon vs Wainright, allowing the indigent legal representation in court cases subjecting the defendant to probability of prison; the film, "Gideon's starring Henry Fonda used this court case as the subject — Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.119.153.149 (talk) 03:24, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I guess you are referring to Hannibal, Missouri#Hannibal residents. We have an article about Clarence Earl Gideon but it appears he left the city early and fails point 3 at Wikipedia:Famous Residents: Significance to the location. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:30, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Compare diffs from two different articles?

Can I compare diffs from two different articles? For example, I would like to compare the old article version content in User:Viriditas/Four Seasons Resort Hualalai with the current article on the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai. I seem to recall reading somewhere that this was possible, probably with the use of an external website/tool. Any ideas? Obviously, I can just update the old version and compare them, and that would solve the problem, but I'm curious about whether this can even be done. Thanks. Viriditas (talk) 03:32, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, this is possible. Call the articles A and B. First use the page history of article A to display the old article revision; in the browser address bar you will see a URL ending in "oldid=<some big number>". Remember that number. Then go to the page history for article B and display the diff between the current version and the previous version. In your browser address bar you will see another URL ending in "oldid=<some other number>". Copy in the remembered number and redisplay.
But this won't work for User:Viriditas/Four Seasons Resort Hualalai because you asked for that page to be deleted. -- John of Reading (talk) 09:33, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Right, thanks. It inserts a comma separating the two articles A, B. In this example, I used two articles, Mun Charn Wong and User:Viriditas/Mun Charn Wong.[1] Can you do more than two? Viriditas (talk) 10:44, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
MediaWiki only compares two revisions. I don't know whether any tools can do more. See also Wikipedia:Complete diff and link guide. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:35, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting from Wapedia an article that has been removed from Wikipedia

An article was created about me by someone else and quite rightly deleted by Wikipedia as I have not yet attained sufficient notoriety. However, the old article continues to appear in google searches through Wapedia. How can I remove the article completely? The information in it was not provided by me and is incorrect in some places. I look forward to an official article in the future when I've earned the listing and in the mean while do not want to confuse fans and colleagues with incorrect out of date information that I'm unable to assert quality-control on. Thank you very much. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.29.171.254 (talk) 03:44, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, Wikipedia has absolutely nothing to do with what goes on at websites like Wapedia. You're going to have to contact the people at that website for corrections you need made over there. --Jayron32 03:52, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

My editing of the police brutality page

I was taken to task for using the word 'unjustified', but that is exactly what the police review board found, was that Ian Birk's shooting of John T. Williams was UNJUSTIFIED. That is NOT just MY word, it is the word used by the shooting review board! And your 'help' pages are so convoluted, how is anyone to find ANYTHING in this miasma? I don't know how to add sources, etc, but I think that the shooting of John T. Williams is far more egregious than the girl beaten in a cell, or the people beaten for jaywalking! The man is DEAD! I did NOT add that the police are still harassing his family, told his brothers, "We have more bullets for the rest of you". — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cheesycat (talkcontribs) 05:58, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

deleting history/ problem is not solved yet .

Use of wp:engvar

Ok, I'm editing a page that is primarily English, as in the country, so am conforming to UK style - for example "colour" not "color", and for television, "series", not "season". The programme is shown in the US though, so what would be the correct terminology when referring specifically to the US shows, which are dubbed with American actors? Should they still be referred to as "series", or is it a "season"? a_man_alone (talk) 12:49, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

As engvar says the article should be consistent throughout except for quotes and a couple of limited exceptions. I believe you should continue on with the english english. You might want to add a note so that those of us on the other side of the ocean understand the difference. GB fan please review my editing 13:04, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Cheers. Engvar is one of my personal bugbears, and I like to see it applied correctly. I'll revisit, and make the changes. a_man_alone (talk) 13:11, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ganesha body?

Where is God Ganesha body? The head is there, but where is the body? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ramakant.sharma.h (talkcontribs) 13:46, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This page is for questions about using Wikipedia. Please consider asking this question at the Humanities reference desk. They specialize in knowledge questions and will try to answer any question in the universe (except how to use Wikipedia, since that is what this Help Desk is for). Just follow the link and ask away. You could always try searching Wikipedia for an article related to the topic you want to know more about. I hope this helps. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 14:02, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I suspect Ramakant is asking about a specific image of Ganesha. Of the images currently appearing in the Ganesha article, all show at least some of his body except for the image of an aum jewel. If Ramakant were to say which particular image is problematic, we might be able to help them further. Astronaut (talk) 15:18, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. Wrong Translation on Home Page

To whom it may concern:

On Wikipedia's home page, the catch phrase "The Free Encyclopedia" is translated in Spanish and French as "El enciclopedia libre" and "L'Encyclopédie libre" respectively. "Libre" is the correct translation to mean "free" with regards to freedom and liberation, but if Wikipedia means to use "free" as in "no charge", then the correct translation would be "El enciclopedia gratis" for Spanish, and "L'Encyclopédie gratuite" in French. I always assumed the latter meaning was intended, and as such would require a change on the homepage, if I'm mistaken and the former was actually intended, please forgive me for wasting your time.

Regards,

Khadijah Élisabeth — Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.34.116.192 (talk) 19:10, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In the English-language version, "free" means both "provided at no cost" and also "provided with no restrictions" - see Wikipedia:About and Wikipedia:Free encyclopedia. It can be hard to translate this double meaning into other languages. -- John of Reading (talk) 19:18, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
See also Wikipedia:Slogans and Gratis versus libre. Many Wikipedia languages without the double meaning deliberately say libre. I'm not aware of any that say gratis. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:15, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Recovering the code of a page

Is there any way to recover the wikicode source of a page without using the "edit this page" function? The whole page only had 19,610 bytes of wikisource.[2] Were you really getting server error on the edit link? I could better understand an error when you view the rendered page at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Tuvalkin/BSicon0A. If you have problems viewing a rendered page then you can get the wikisource by manually appending ?action=edit to the url: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Tuvalkin/BSicon0A?action=edit. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:00, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Or, it that still times out (happens to me on occasion with very large pages) you could use the API to retrieve page content, like this. Avicennasis @ 21:38, 6 Elul 5771 / 21:38, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I presumed the problem had to do with the fact that every single table line is a transcluded template ( get the same problem with 2010_term_opinions_of_the_Supreme_Court_of_the_United_States, where a similar table-row template is probably v. complicated). Circéus (talk) 01:23, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
FWIW, here's the error message for an attempt at the section editing above: "Error: ERR_READ_TIMEOUT, errno [No Error] at Tue, 06 Sep 2011 01:33:46 GMT" Circéus (talk) 01:36, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That's odd. It loads for me in about a second every time. Does it happen when you are logged out? I wonder whether something in your account forces reading of the transcluded pages. PrimeHunter (talk) 05:02, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Then I'd guess my insistence on using Monobook (it did indeed not fail in unlogged Vector), or something to do with my user javascript. If it's not the javascript, I,d be rather concerned about the site having pages that will fail server-side in one skin and not another... Circéus (talk) 05:24, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I copied User:Circeus/monobook.js and changed to MonoBook. It still loads in a second for me. PrimeHunter (talk) 06:26, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The site doesn't seem to have much of value, it seems to be a very new site with very little actual content - content that is already available through official channels. It also seems to basically be a forum which violates WP:ELNO. Яehevkor 21:42, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It also seems of low value for an external link to me but I don't edit video game articles. You could post to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Video games or search their archives. questions about starting new article

Two quick questions about starting a new article. I'd like to do one about the movie "The Gymnast". When I punch in the title on Wikipedia the article about the Seinfeld episode "The Gymnast" pops up. I know to build an article about the movie I'll have to work with the disambiguation angle. The info page describing disambiguation is a bit confusing. Anyone have an abridged or easily understandable explination of the process? On the same subject, the publicized image of the DVD cover for the movie "The Gymnast" is all over the internet and in print. Can I just use the image for the article? When I download it what licensing notation should I use? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jmasiulewicz (talkcontribs) 22:10, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You can create an article at The Gymnast (film). Special:WhatLinksHere/The Gymnast (film) already shows several articles pointing there. The disambiguation process is complicated because there are many possibilities depending on the number of articles, their precise names, their relative importance and so on. The simplest in this case would be to add the film to the top of The Gymnast when you have created the new article. This renders as:
You can use Non-free video cover. The "Upload file" link automatically leads you there if you select "It is a cover or other page from a book, DVD, newspaper, magazine, or similar source", and then the DVD option in the Licensing drop-down box. Using a parameter in an infobox

Infobox musical artist doesn't have a partner (or a spouse) parameter like Infobox person. Is there a way to use the artist infobox and specify a spouse or a partner?--Bbb23 (talk) 23:03, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If it does not already contain the parameter, I think you will have to edit and add that parameter. Currently there doesn't seem to be a parameter that would be appropriate for holding that information. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 23:09, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Even if I wanted to attempt to edit the template, I can't because it's locked. Should I suggest the changes on the Talk page?--Bbb23 (talk) 23:12, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. See Wikipedia:Edit requests for the procedure. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 23:14, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Template talk:Infobox musical artist says: Notice: Prior discussion has determined by broad consensus that fields like "spouse" will not be added to this infobox, as they are not pertinent to a person's career as a musical artist in the vast majority of cases. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:15, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Amazing, why are they pertinent to anyone's career? Down with spouses! Thanks for the heads-up.--Bbb23 (talk) 23:51, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Spouses may be of great importance privately but they tend to play a larger public role in some positions, for example politicians and royalty. In the latter they can literally be the only reason for the position. Spouses should usually be mentioned somewhere in the article but the infobox is more focused. Can someone please edit the page for Tim Bee, former Arizona Senate President?

I do not know html, nor do I have time to figure it out. It's now apparent to me why the majority of wikipedia editors are male graduate students in the hard sciences. I'm doing a PhD in social science, so I thought I'd become a contributor to even things up a bit and because I know a lot about immigration politics. But I'm not about to try to learn how to code so that I can do academic work for free. Anyway, the page for Tim Bee says he was succeeded in his position as senate president by Bob Burns. This is flat wrong and a stupid mistake. Bob Burns is the president of the state /legislature/. The president of the state senate is a very well-known, powerful anti-immigrant Republican named Russell Pearce. Can someone please change this? I know my students use this site and I don't want them being misinformed. Sources: http://www.azsenate.gov/, http://www.azleg.gov/MembersPage.asp?Member_ID=101&Legislature=49&Session_ID=87 Also, it would really improve the diversity of your editorial volunteers if the editing interface for this site were more user-friendly to non-techies. Er, yes, thanks for pointing out the error, and Welcome to Wikipedia (from a male contributor with an anthropology Bsc). I'll fix this if nobody else has beaten me to it. As for the user interface, yes it is a pain, and yes, we should do something about it - though unfortunately the techies are the only ones who know how... AndyTheGrump (talk) 23:26, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think I've done this correctly now, but I'd appreciate someone else taking a look - as a Brit, I'm not too familiar with how state-level U.S. governance works. How many presidents does Arizona need...? AndyTheGrump (talk) 23:44, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure about Arizona, but I've heard the gag that thanks to Congress, the United States has 536 presidents... Prioryman (talk) 23:52, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Tim Bee is not mentioned in the sources posted by Doctorvirginiawaterson. Bob Burns is only mentioned in the second source. If you don't know the website then it can seem unclear what he was president of, but it was the Senate. Lots of reliable sources call both him and Bob Burns President of the Senate in their respective terms, for example [3] from the Arizona Daily Star which says Bob Burns succeeded Tim Bee. As far as I can tell there is no position called President of the State Legislature. The article was correct before and I have reverted the edits by AndyTheGrump. Tim Bee was succeeded by Bob Burns (politician) in 2009, and Bob Burns was succeeded by Russell Pearce in 2011. It appears Doctorvirginiawaterson got confused because Tim Bee's successor is not the current president. PrimeHunter (talk) 04:22, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This source [4] is entitled "Arizona State Legislature" and describes Bee as "President" - I wonder if this is a question of a formal title vs a common name, or whether the website is merely confusing? I can't seem to find anything that clarifies this in the Arizona constitution, [5] but I think I'd better leave this to others more familiar with such topics. AndyTheGrump (talk) 12:10, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The source [6] is at the official website of the Arizona State Legislature. Every page at the site has the heading "Arizona State Legislature". The Legislature has two chambers: Senate and House of Representatives. Below "President" it says "Senate" and twice later he is described as "Senate president". Here is a corresponding page for the Speaker Of The House: [7]. Below "Speaker Of The House" it says "House of Representatives". Unlike the OP's claim, there is only one President in the Legislature. Since the title is unique, "Senate" may sometimes be omitted from the title, especially in contexts which already say he is in the Senate. By the way, I'm Danish and not at all familiar with the topic (we don't have bicameralism or state legislatures in Denmark and politics is not my field), but I did my research. This help desk gets a lot of "corrections" from people who claim to know what they are talking about. I always check their claims and they are often false. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:45, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Senate leadership page is at this page, where Pearce is clearly described as President of the Senate, if (and only if) you pick the right session of the legislature. The URL remains the same, no matter what session you pick at the top of the page! Bee's personal page may not have been updated recently. --Orange Mike | Talk 14:40, 6 September 2011 (UTC) (History major, poli sci minor)[reply]

Help needed with harv references

I'm rewriting an existing article in my user space (see User:Prioryman/Battle of Vukovar) but am struggling with the harv reference format, into which I'm converting existing references. Specifically, although I have got it working for books, I've been unable to get it to work for newspaper articles. Specific examples are references 113, 115 and 116, none of which works when clicked. They should all be linking through to the news stories listed under the references at the end of the article. I've no idea why this is happening; can anyone explain what I'm doing wrong? Prioryman (talk) 23:42, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You cannot use the Harvnb template the way you attempt to do. This template is either for inline citations with a page number or for use in a reference section (see Template:Harvard citation no brackets#Usage). Anyway, the sources you want to use this with MUST be defined in a separate 'References' section. Furthermore on the first occurrence of the citation you must use Harvnb and if you want to use the same footnote subsequently you must use sfn. You can see an example of how this works in the article Wolstenholme prime. Feel free to start a new section here at the help desk if you have further questions. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 09:05, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sine Battle of Vukovar exists, it appears you are rewriting it. Per WP:CITEVAR, you need to discuss changes to reference style before implementation. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 09:50, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the advice. I'll have to find another way to tackle the news articles, then. I actually wrote the original article, so per WP:CITEVAR the decision on reference styles is up to me, but I'll certainly notify the other editors of that article as a courtesy. Searching for plain English tutorial on how to write an article for Wikipedia

I am trying to write an article for Wikipedia, but am frustrated by episodic partial instructions, presumption of knowledge about how Wikipedia works and Wiki-jargon. Is there a simple, straight-forward, plain-English tutorial describing how to write an article for Wikipedia? Please send me the link, if you have one. This arose from a question at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Miscellaneous#Not exactly a cornerstone. With a lot of ghits, I figure it's worth a redirect. Outdated Editing Critique banners on top of articles

I don't know what the technical Wikipedia term is for those things, but at what point do they get removed? And who removes them? Can anyone do it if the banner is no longer relevant?

I'll give as an example the article 8. The editorial banner twice states that the article has "Appalling English" and requires major revision, and this is dated 2007. In the years since that was put on the top of the article, the article has been cleaned up, and it reads well to me anyway. Why is that banner still there? Leaving those outdated editorial banners stuck to the top of articles for years on end gives the reader the impression that the reader needn't bother reading any further, since the article is supposedly a mess, and these editorial banners are the first thing that they see when they open the page.

What is the process for removing them? I've seen many outdated ones.

Yes, if you feel that the banner no longer applies, you can remove them yourself. Dismas|(talk) 02:47, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You would put the jargon template at the very top of the article. EMANI SANKARA SASTRY

In the Article on Sri Emani Sankara Sastry, Mrs. V. Saraswathi, who is one of the 5 sisters and the youngest in the family {the age difference between Sri Sastry and Smt. Emani Saraswathi (maiden name Kum. Emani Saraswathi)WAS 5 1/2 YEARS}, has been shown as being a disciple of Sri Sankara Sastry - this is not correct. Mrs. V. Saraswathi, was a gifted and talented Veena player; she learnt her music from her father Sri Emani Achyutha Rama Sastry the same guru (and father) of Sri Sankara Sastry. Mrs. V. Saraswathi won a Gold Medal at the age of 8 from the Sangeetha Nataka Akademi, Chennai (some time in 1936-37) for her Veena recital. Mrs. V. Saraswathi was an 'A' Grade Artiste (Veena Player) of All India Radio, Hyderabad and she retired from that place. The details can be verified from the records of All India Radio, Hyderabad. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.184.42.46 (talk) 09:16, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bad linking between Wiki pages of different languages

I just read the swedish-language wikipage for "färsköl" - beer that has not been pasterized or filtered. That wikipage had a link to the English-language article on the same topic - or so I had expected. However, when I followed that link I came to a wiki article titled "Green Beer Day". Both articles are about beer in general, but still the link is bad. What to do? 46.236.70.107 (talk) 09:47, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

At the bottom of the Swedish Wikipedia page you should find an interwiki link in the form en:Green Beer Day. That is what specifies that the Swedish article link to the English Wikipedia and to what page. It looks like there is no English article to link to and so you should just remove the link. I have done so from the English article.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 10:53, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I removed the iw link in the Swedish article. Unless it had been removed promptly (after the iw link in Green Beer Day was removed), the interwiki bots would have kept readding the link to the en.wp article. Deor (talk) 12:30, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I can't find anything at List of beer styles or Beer style that would be a suitable equivalent; however it may be worthwhile for someone to translate the article from Swedish to English; it seems an obvious hole at en.wikipedia that could be easily remedied. --Jayron32 16:28, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry MEStony, but I'm afraid the draft article, currently at User:MEStony/Journal of Personal Selling & Sales Management, is not yet ready to be moved to article space. From a quick look, I see three main problems:
• You've not yet demonstrated that the journal meets Wikipedia's requirement of notability, detailed at Wikipedia:Notability.
• The first sentence appears to be a direct quote from http://salesmanagement.org/about, which is copyright text. Please see Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
• The article sounds promotional in tone, which is in part due to the copied text. But it may also be because you have some affiliation with the subject you're writing about. Anyone needs to exercise extreme caution when writing about, for example, their employer, as it is difficult to uphold Wikipedia's requirement of neutrality in these cases. Please see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest for more on this topic.

The box you see at the top of David Willey indicates there are issues with the article (formatting, lack of citations, etc.). The box should stay there until the issues are corrected. TNXMan 15:16, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
What you need to do to get the box removed is to address the issues listed in it! Find the required references and add them (see WP:CITE and WP:Referencing for beginners); and rewrite it so it reads like an encyclopaedia article (see WP:TONE). If the other suggestion is correct that you are affiliated with David Willey, then you should also read WP:Conflict of Interest, and probably confine yourself to putting material on the talk page.
When you believe that all the issues have been met, then you can remove the warnings (or indeed, if one is met, you can remove that one from the 'multiple issues' template at the top of the page). But explain why you think this is appropriate in the WP:Edit summary or on the WP:Talk page, and be prepared that other editors may not agree that the issues have been met. --ColinFine (talk) 20:05, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Misstagging of articles is pretty common (pepole make it a redirect and then don't update the class on the banner for example). Is this going to be a problem for all these articles? --Kumioko (talk) 16:52, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The bot operator has been notified at User talk:CBM#Vacillating Bot ! which links to here. I don't know whether it is a more general problem but you could post there if you are concerned. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:09, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is not about the redirect; it's that the same talk page was marked as Stub-Class and Start-Class for the same wikiproject [11]. The rating of the page that the article redirects to won't matter; each talk page is considered independently. But if the same talk page has more than one rating for the same project the bot will think the page is reassessed each day, just based on the way the code works out. It turns out to be a pain to detect this situation while trying to be memory efficient (particularly for the Biography project) so the bot just works through the error. It's really a case of invalid input leading to strange behavior which is not "strange enough" to worry about. It would be possible, in principle, for someone to make a report of all articles that have this sort of problem, but again it is hard to do efficiently because of the scope of the tagging system. usually people notice the problem because the article keeps coming up as reassessed, like this one did. — Carl (CBM · talk) 22:26, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
OK, my guess was wrong. on Talk:Celadon (color) placed it in Category:Stub-Class color articles, but also caused the talk page to transclude Talk:Celadon (color)/Comments which was in Category:Start-Class color articles and Category:Mid-importance color articles due to missing colons in category links. I have added the colons: [12]. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:24, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

• If you want to upload an image from your computer for use in an article, you must determine the proper license of the image (or whether it is in the public domain). If you know the image is public domain or copyrighted but under a suitable free-license, upload it to the Wikimedia Commons instead of here, so that all projects have access to the image (sign up). If you are unsure of the licensing status, see the file upload wizard for more information. Please also read Wikipedia's image use policy.
• If you want to add an image that has already been uploaded to Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons, add to the area of the article where you want the image to appear – replacing File name.jpg with the actual file name of the image, and Caption text with a short description of the image. In Wikipedia articles where a word appears followed by a speaker symbol and phonetic spelling should one be able to click on the speaker symbol and then hear the word spoken out loud? If so, what must be done to enable this feature? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.240.149.32 (talk) 19:49, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A speaker symbol like at Muammar Gaddafi can both indicate audio (the first speaker) and a written pronunciation (the second speaker). Some articles will only have one of them. For audio you should either hear sound (with the proper software and hardware) or be taken to a file page like File:Ar-Muammar al-Qaddafi.ogg where you can play the sound. See Wikipedia:Media help. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:06, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps we need a different symbol for pronunciation. Yaris678 (talk) 11:47, 7 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
i.e. One symbol for audio and another for phonetic spelling. Yaris678 (talk) 11:49, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

How many pages can a user edit in one minute?

I am curious about that how many pages a user can edit in one minute? I found a user edited more than 8,000 pages in 2 hours by using Wikipedia:Twinkle. Is he/she a robot?--Merry Rabbit 02:42, 7 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There is no technical cap on the number of pages a person can edit in a given period of time (except in cases of page moves or things caught by the edit filter). However, if people complain about the edits being made and the user doesn't respond, an account might be blocked temporarily as an unapproved bot if the edits are contentious. That said, user accounts that make a large volume of edits in a short period of time are typically normal humans that are using scripts or tools. Actual bots, on the other hand, will typically give mention that they're a bot by alluding to it in their user name (e.g., User:SineBot, User:ClueBot, etc). --slakrtalk / 02:57, 7 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That's about 66 edits per minute, nonstop, which I don't think is possible without running an unauthorized bot. Can you provide the name of the account?--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:10, 7 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It is possible that a user who is not technically a bot but rather a human using an semi-automated tool that does not run completely automatically edits under a bot account. As far as I am aware, users who make large numbers of edits in a short period of time with a semi-automated tool from an account need to have a bot flag on that account, so this editor would be counted as a bot under Wikipedias policies and guidelines. I hope you are reading this, because nobody is going to call you. You should read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. Wikipedia isn't a social networking site, it is an encyclopedia, and the articles here are required to be from a neutral point of view. That means that people who are very close to the subject of an article (like, say the person's wife, or their manager) may find it difficult to maintain that level of neutrality. That doesn't mean you don't have valuable information or insight to share, it just needs to be handled carefully so Wikipedia's editorial standards can be maintained. What you should do is to start a discussion on the article's "Talk" page, located at Talk:Lenny Williams, explain who you are, and leave suggestions on how the article can be improved. Other people, who don't have a conflict of interest, can evaluate your suggestions and work out how to incorporate them in the article. I hope this was helpful! --Jayron32 03:27, 7 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There are some possibilities and it depends on what exactly you want to have. If you want to download single articles, you can do this by clicking "Print/export" and then click "Download as PDF" (usually on the left side if you use Vector skin). You can also download a database dump of all articles, see Wikipedia:Database download, where you can choose between different options regarding how much of Wikipedia you want to download. This is the help desk for the encyclopedia Wikipedia. We have nothing called "Images For Judith Durham", but I recognize the term "Images for ..." from Google searches. One of our around 3.7 million articles is about Google but we are not associated with Google. I guess you made the Google search Judith Durham and clicked an image under the heading "Images for Judith Durham". The order of search results at Google can quickly change but when I did the search, our article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judith_Durham was the search result right below the images. That is just a coincidence. It doesn't mean the images belong to us. The order of the images can change between Google searches. The 5th from the left in my search was called Monas2.jpg and lead to http://www.telinco.com/seekers/Judith_Durham.html with no porn. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:39, 7 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A number of different editors have contributed to Barracks Square, Macclesfield, England. If you have suggested improvements to the article you can discuss them on the article's talk page. If you click on the article's "View history" tab you can see who has done which edits; if you click on the talk page link for a particular user, you might find an "E-mail this user" link under "Toolbox" on the left hand menu, if you and the editor concerned have each enabled e-mail in your preferences. - David Biddulph (talk) 14:37, 7 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Add your sîgnature by typing four tildes (~~~~) after your message. (The ones there didn't form my signature because I typed around them, which tells the software not to recognize it as my signature. If I type them normally, I get Interchangeable|talk to me, my custom signature.) If you want a personalized signature like mine, you can customize your own signature by going to the "Preferences" window at the top of the screen. See this tutorial for a guide to customizing signatures.

Some other common controls while editing Wikipedia are:

• Adding two square brackets ([[]]) around a word will create a Wikilink to the article or page of that exact title. If you want the text that readers will see on the screen to be different from the title of the article, put down two left square brackets, enter the title of the article, type a pipe (|, you can find this in the "Wiki Markup" editing window, but it should be on your keyboard just above Enter/Return), and then type the text you want readers to see followed by two right square brackets. Thus, I can link every word in this sentence to Cactus.
• Add two apostrophes at each end of a text to make it italic, and three to make it bold. Add five apostrophes if you want both at once.
• To make a list of things, like I'm doing right now, add a * before every line.
1. I can also make a numbered list by adding a number sign
2. before
3. each
4. line.

That's pretty much all you need to know for now - I'll leave it to you to find the other controls, but you don't actually need many of them unless you do some major article-writing and referencing. Interchangeable|talk to me 00:40, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

How to rename a category where pages are added only via template transclusion

I am trying to split up the pages that make up Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in New York by county. I created a new sub category Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Westchester County. A few days later, I found the instructions at Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in the United States, and found I had named the category incorrectly. It should have been Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Westchester County, New York (with the state name added). The issue is that the pages get into the categories by virtue of the reqphoto or similar tag on the talk pages, not by normal categorization of the page. Because of this, I assume that all the talk pages have to be edited by hand to get them to point to the renamed category (I am willing to do this!).

Question: It the preference that I

1. Put in a normal speedy rename request for the category under WP:CFDS with reason C2C? I don't think the normal rename procedure would be able to take care of the underlying talk pages, so I would then edit the 13 or so talk pages to get them pointed correctly.
2. Or just create the new category, point the pages to the new category and put in a speedy delete for the old category?
3. Or create the new and make the old a redirect? I like this the least. I see no reason for a redirect.

BTW, the same fix has to be done for Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Dutchess County which only has 5 pages pointing to it.

Sorry for the confusion! --Arg342 (talk) 16:14, 7 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dear editors:

I have tried to add the name of an article I wrote for the Houston Post about Jewish artist Alice Cahana to the page regarding her biography on Wikipedia. My article was written Dec. 26, 1976 while I was religion writer for the Post, and titled 'And you who got life instead...what are you doing with memories of that long night?"

A message appears on her Wikipedia article stating that an error has been made, but I can't figure out what the error is. I inserted the name of my article, written by my former name Charlene Warnken, under references, above the Houston Chronicle article which was cited, because my article preceded that article by several years. Now both of our articles are stuck in "limbo," accessible only by hitting "edit."

I have logged into Wickipedia under my new married name: Charlene Scott Myers. I appreciate anything you can tell me that will help me correct whatever error I have made.

```````` — Preceding unsigned comment added by Charlene Scott Myers (talkcontribs) 17:36, 7 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The technical problem was that every footnote in wikipedia needs both a  tag at the end of the reference. You were missing the latter. I removed the reference in its entirety, though, because it wasn't clear what fact(s) in the article the reference was supporting. We generally don't list every potentially relevant newspaper article at the bottom of an article - the only (newspaper) articles cited are the ones that support the (wikipedia) article text. I'd recommend re-adding the footnote, but placing it after the text in the article that it supports (or, even better, expanding the article to reflect the information in the newspaper).     Can a magazine scan be used to support a reference?
There's a statement in an article that I want to add a reference to, and I have a scan of the page of the magazine that has the information. If I were to do an MLA format citation, should/could something like the page number or article title link to the scan (which would probably be uploaded to an external site)? Or perhaps a link at the end? Or should I just do the citation without the scan? - Purplewowies (talk) 18:22, 7 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You cannot use the scan as publishing it anywhere online would likely be a copyright violation and Wikipedia cannot link to them, see WP:LINKVIO. Assuming it is a reliable source you can cite with just the publication/issue/page number/article name etc (as much information as you can give). Яehevkor 18:27, 7 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No need to refer to a scan - we do not require references to be available online. Just cite the source using the Cite journal template and it should be OK. – ukexpat (talk) 18:28, 7 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
And (although it does not apply in this case, since you've got the physical publication in front of you) I would like to point out for the record that in this age of Photoshop, nobody should cite to what purport to be scans of newspaper articles and the like when found online, as they may or may not be authentic. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:31, 7 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There are two articles I created, Circular prime and Börse Stuttgart. Both are rather short, but in my opinion well referenced. What could perhaps be added to both is a 'See also' section, although in those two cases I am not sure which wikilinks they should contain that are not already in the body of the article. I hope these two examples are helpful for you. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 00:34, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Australian Science Fiction Writers
Wikipaedia's list of Australian science fiction authors does not include one of Australia's earliest and best known over many decades, WYNNE NOEL WHITEFORD. Wynne was an Australian-born reader of science fiction from the 1930s onwards, and an author from the 1950s, when he wrote many short stories, some published in American science fiction magazines. From the 1970s, he wrote several science fiction nevels, published first in Australia by VOID, in both hardcover and paperback and later in America, by ACE, in paperback.
Helena Binns
I guess you refer to Category:Australian science fiction writers. We call that a category and not a list. A category can only contain Wikipedia pages and there is no page about Wynne Noel Whiteford. As to the more general question, yes, there are many explicit images on Wikipedia - some subjects can only sensibly be discussed openly if images are available.     Why the assumption that ISP language/IP represents user language?
Or in other words, why don't you let your users decide what language content gets represented in, instead of ramming a language down their throat they may not even understand? I live near a frontier and use an ISP from a country the language of which I DO NOT SPEAK. Not at all. Not even a tiny bit. I would like to contribute photos of monuments, as I have been lately taking pictures in my area, but every time I try to access the relevant information I get AUTOMATICALLY and UNASKED FOR served content in the language of my ISP. Hello? What absolute, complete nonsense is that? Why do I get to choose a language in my account, when you then decide to simply override it? Do you believe people are too bloody stupid to know which language they want to read content and texts in? And to aggravate people even worse, there are no links to choose your proper language from on that page either.     I HAVE ALSO INTERVIEWED THE ACTUAL MUSICIAN.
POURPOURAKIS HAS WORKED WITH SOME OF THE MOST FAMOUS ENTERTAINERS FROM GREECE. HE IS CONSIDERED A LIVING LEGEND AMONG HIS PEERS AND I HAVE FEEDBACK THAT THIS WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE IS BEING USED BY PEOPLE WHO ARE INTERESTED IN GREEK AMERICAN MUSICIANS.
IN FACT, THE MUSICIANS YOU HAVE LISTED IN YOUR "GREEK BOUZOUKI PLAYERS" CAME TO THE STATES AFTER POURPOURAKIS WAS ALREADY FAMOUS AND WORKED ALONG SIDE OF HIM.
I ALSO HAVE A LIST OF ALL HIS RECORDS THAT HE RECORDED IN THE 1950s HERE IN THE UNITED STATES.
NICK POURPOURAKIS HAS HIS OWN UNIQUE STYLE AND IS ONE OF THE BEST BOUZOUKI PLAYERS WHO IS STILL AROUND FROM AN ERA THAT HAS DISAPPEARED. HE IS STILL ACTIVE.
HE PRODUCED OVER 45 RECORDS HERE IN THE STATES AND MANY OF HIS VERSIONS ARE CONSIDERED BETTER THAN THE ORIGINALS.
HE WAS INTERVIEWED ON TELEVISION IN GREECE IN 2001 AND A RADIO PROGRAM DEDICATED TWO NIGHTS TO HIM.
I ACTUALLY GOT FEEDBACK FROM SEVERAL PEOPLE FROM OTHER COUNTRIES THAT WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT HIM.
DUE TO MY WORK I HAVE NOT HAD A CHANCE TO FINISH THE ARTICLE YET AND I AM STILL RESEARCHING.
I AM ALSO HAVING SOME PROBLEMS WITH THE LAYOUT OF WIKIPEDIA SO I WOULD REALLY LIKE SOMEONE TO HELP ME WITH THAT. CAN YOU RECOMMEND ANYONE. I WANT TO UPLOAD A PHOTO AND HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIGURE THAT OUT.
WIKIPEDIA ALSO HAS ARTICLES ABOUT OTHER MUSICIANS IN THE SAME CATEGORY AS POURPOURAKIS, I.E. MANOLIS HIOTIS AND OTHERS AND THEIR REFERENCES AGAIN ARE ARTICLES THAT WERE WRITTEN IN GREECE.
I DON'T WANT TO NAME THE OTHER MUSICIANS BECAUSE THEY ARE PERSONAL FRIENDS OF MINE AND I DON'T WANT PROBLEMS.
THIS IS A MUSICIAN WHO CAME HERE AT AGE 15 AND IN 2 YEARS WAS A RECORD PRODUCER, ORCHESTRATOR, MUSIC DIRECTOR AND COMPOSED SEVERAL PIECES OF MUSIC THAT WERE ENJOYED BY THE IMMIGRANT GREEKS WHO CAME TO THE STATES AFTER WWII.
HE HAS MUSIC ON FACEBOOK THAT SPANS FROM THE EARLY 1950s ALL THE WAY THROUGH TO THE PRESENT.
PLEASE TELL ME IN LAYMENS' TERMS WHAT I NEED TO DO TO KEEP THE ARTICLE ON YOUR SITE.
Please stop SHOUTING. Have you looked at the links provided on your talk page? Is there something specific that you don't understand? - David Biddulph (talk) 08:02, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c) Hi Aglaiadakis. Please note that it is a very strong feature of internet culture to view typing in all uppercase as SHOUTING! I could barely read your post because of it. The problem the article on Nicos Pourpourakis has is that it is not sourced at all, much less to reliable sources. Not only do we require that the topics of articles be the subject of substantive treatment in reliable sources, per the general notability guideline (see also the sub-guideline on people), but we require much better sourcing for articles on living persons.
If you have sources, as you say, you need to cite them in the article, not just tell us you have them. Please see Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners. Attempt to add the references you have yourself to the article. Once you do so, if you have technical trouble, bring the specifics to us and we can help. I looked for where you "listed your sources but they were deleted" but did not find where that happened. Meanwhile, you have not commented at all at the deletion discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Nicos Pourpourakis. You should comment there, but I think the right way is to first add sources to the article, then bring that concrete response to the deletion discussion as your basis for why the deletion rationale does not apply.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 08:13, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see User:Xgllo removed the references you added in this edit. I have undone that. It's a start, but you really need more complete sourcing, using inline citations. If you familiarize yourself with how page histories work, you could have tracked down the source of the removal and reverted it yourself.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 08:28, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
DEL policy if article exists in other language.
End_Child_Sexual_Abuse_Foundation has been PRODed for no external references and no independent sources found. The chinese language version has much more content and references by the looks of it. So what's the policy on this? Notability requires only that these necessary sources have been published, not that the names of these sources have already been typed into the article. Should one check the references in that article before PRODing? Is an article in one language enough to presume the notability of the topic in the english version and remove the PROD? DS Belgium (talk) 08:21, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The problem would appear to be a lack of independent, third party references. These do not necessarily need to be in the English language. The existence of an article on another language Wikipedia does not necessarily mean that it will be kept on en-Wiki. Different wikis have different standards.     Norman Lamont/Lindi St Clair
On your pages for Norman Lamont and for Lindi St Clair you state that Ms St Clair was the dominatrix lodging in Lamont's Notting Hill flat in 1991.
This was not true. The lady in question was named <redacted - ATG> - I knew her personally and visited the flat at least twice. Lindi St Clair's involvement in the London SM Sceene was over by 91, and she had nothing to do with <redacted - ATG> or Norman Lamont's flat.
American Dad episode articles are gone
I've recently noticed that all articles that talk about individual episodes of the American animated series, American Dad! are gone and every time I look up an episode, I get redirected to the articles about the show's DVDs. Why is this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.14.16.101 (talk) 12:17, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Around 50 episodes still have articles. See Category:American Dad! episodes. Many other episodes have been redirected because the article only consisted of a plot. See WP:PLOT. If an article like Four Little Words was redirected then you can find the old article by clicking "Redirected from Four Little Words" at the top of the page, then click the "View history" tab, and then a time of an old edit, for example [14]. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:37, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c) There are plenty of American Dad episodes articles still existing. See List of American Dad! episodes. I imagine some, the ones you are here about, were indeed redirected. Navigate to one now and when you end up at the article on the main show through the redirect, go to the top of the page and you will see just underneath the title of the page (Redirected from NAME). Click on the name and that will bring you to the redirect page itself. Once there, click on the history tab at the top of the page and see if you can find out from the page history why it was redirected; people will often state the reason in an edit summary.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:42, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm confused as to why redirection is appropriate in such instances.
There's no dispute that a Wikipedia article about a television episode should contain more than a plot summary. So if one doesn't, it should be tagged and expanded. An article's redirection (i.e. elimination, as far as most users are concerned) is a good way to discourage editors from ever bothering to improve it.
In my view, such an action should occur only if an article's content is essentially unusable (e.g. extremely poor, plagiarized, etc.) or if the subject doesn't warrant a dedicated article.
Since when do we remove legitimate articles in need of work? —David Levy 12:58, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
With just a plot summary, it's not a legitimate article. Television episodes are not automatically notable; they need significant coverage in reliable sources. If that is not in evidence, then a redirect is perfectly appropriate. No information is lost; it can be restored at any time once someone finds appropriate sources. Powers T 13:02, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
1. I wrote "legitimate articles in need of work."
By "legitimate articles," I mean "articles that legitimately exist." I don't mean "articles lacking major flaws." When an article is missing important information, the usual course of action is to either add it or request that it be added.
2. I noted above that redirection is appropriate "if the subject doesn't warrant a dedicated article." I'm referring not to such an instance, but to one in which redirection is performed purely because only a plot summary has been written so far.
If an editor believes that no reliable sources have provided significant coverage, that should be noted in the redirection's edit summary. If he/she is unsure, a better solution is to tag the article and allow a reasonable amount of time for improvement (and then redirect if the problem persists).
3. I'm well aware that redirection doesn't eliminate an article's history. But as evidenced in this thread, not everyone knows this. It's likely that most users will neither realize that an article previously existed nor understand that it can be recovered and improved. —David Levy 14:33, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, then how about "we don't want otherwise-empty plot summaries hanging around giving people the idea that they're acceptable standalone articles"? Powers T 15:21, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hence my suggestion that a prominent cleanup tag be inserted for a reasonable period of time. One exists for this exact purpose. —David Levy 15:38, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think the OP's question has been answered sufficiently, any further discussion on the whys and what fors can take place in Talk:List of American Dad! episodes. Яehevkor 15:25, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The underlying issue relates to no television series in particular. —David Levy 15:38, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think it is more than simply removing plot-only stubs, but redirecting articles that fail to establish notability in reliable sources. —Akrabbimtalk 15:44, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As noted above, there's no dispute that a lack of significant coverage by reliable sources is a valid reason for redirection. There also is no dispute that the onus is on editors to establish notability, not the absence thereof.
My point is that users should be placed on notice via this dated template and given a reasonable amount of time to address the issue. Immediate redirection hides the problem from view and discourages/obstructs its rectification. —David Levy 15:55, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hello all. I simply want to find the author of a book by Freemasons whose name is Martin Short. I am not trying to call up the comedian Martin Short. WP carries bio on Stephen Knight, who Martin Short writes about. I expect that WP will also carry bio on Martin Short. Just how do I go about getting past the Martin Short I am not looking for in my search? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aarrbbyy (talkcontribs) 12:42, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Normally, if we have an article on other people by the same name, you'll see a note at the top of the article helping you find the other articles. In this case, we have no article on anyone else named "Martin Short". If you'd like to write one, please follow this link: Martin Short (author). Powers T 13:03, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
"Cite book" formatting boggle
An attempt to format a ref at Beryl has confused me. The book is a series of three volumes published every year[16], yet the citation format for the section of the book reads like a magazine[17]. It simply does not look correct in the "References" section. I hope someone knowledgeable in using cite book can give it a look and tell me what I have done wrong (if anything). 71.234.215.133 (talk) 13:58, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You defined Maine as the title, while it seems the title of the book is 'Minerals yearbook 1990'. Template:Cite book contains a "Chapter" parameter, which should read Maine in this case. The title of the book would be Minerals yearbook 1990. If this book is part of a series of Minerals Yearbooks, this can be defined using the "Series" parameter. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 14:18, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, wait I think in this case you could also use Template:Cite journal. The template documentation says this one should also be used for articles in magazines and a yearbook could theoretically be regarded as an annually published magazine. So I think it partially simply depends on editor preference. Also I think as long as the source can be clearly identified it would be ok to use either of the templates. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 14:29, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I went with book over journal since it has an ISBN code. The problem is/was, it is not only a yearly publication but a three-volume collection each year. I changed Yearbook to the title, and "Maine" to the chapter. It still looks odd but it works. Thank you. 71.234.215.133 (talk) 15:50, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
What is an ANN score in Wikipedia?213.107.74.132 (talk) 14:52, 8 September 2011 (UTC)--[reply]
(edit conflict) It may refer to an Artificial neural network and is mentioned at the userpage of a bot at User:ClueBot NG#Artificial Neural Network. If I understand correctly, the bots algorithm for each word used on Wikipedia (such as tree, stone, house etc.) assigns a probability that the addition of the word might be vandalism. Thus as mentioned on the bots userpage this score seems to determine with which probability an added word might be the result of vandalism.     Behbahani dialect
Behbahan is a town located in the southeast of the Khoozestan province in Iran. The dialect belongs to a subdivision of North West Iranian Languages. The article focuses on the verbal construction in general and the function, place and relation of personal endings and clitics in details. The dialect is characterized by a split system in the behavior of its personal endings and clitics due to the transitivity of verbs and the tense system. Therefore, there are two different syntactic patterns, each including verbs sharing a specific set of personal endings, clitics and independent personal pronouns. These very characteristics include Behbahani among ergative languages. The first pattern consists of intransitive verbs in both past and present, as well as transitive verbs in the present tense, whereas the second pattern deals with transitive verbs in the past only. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.182.55.24 (talk) 17:07, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
