== Two different URLs for same page comes up as different versions. ==

The Wikipedia page for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tcho and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TCHO come up as different revisions in certain browsers (Firefox and Chrome, but not Safari). The newest revision is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TCHO and if you are on the old page (/Tcho) and click "Read," it will jump to the new revision. I've tried clearing cache and cookies. Also, if you wiki search "tcho" in the aforementioned browsers, it goes to the old page (/Tcho) and if you search "TCHO" it goes to the new page (/TCHO). Is there anything to do about this?

User Fastily/E deleted my article and suggests in his user page that Help Desk can help to review re-submitted articles

I have resubmitted the article as Income Tax Filing Deadlines in Singapore. Can someone please review the contents and advise if it is fine? (Ie. will not be deleted)

I do not understand why my earlier article was deleted in the first place.

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Taxaccnicole (talkcontribs) 01:32, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

My new edit has stayed red ?

I went into "List of New Zealand Artists" and added my name ... Liz McAuliffe .. this was my first ever edit ... with the page saved and published ..my name has gone red.. it was black when I typed it ... others on the list are blue ?? bit confused . Thanks Liz — Preceding unsigned comment added by Liz..Carver & Painter (talkcontribs) 02:34, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It is red because the link you added, Liz McAuliffe, doesn't have an article. See WP:Redlink. Blue links are those entries that have articles. GB fan 02:40, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    article's

Hi, I am trying to create an article about a model, she did everything there was, but everytime i create it, it get's deleted and I dont know why, and I would like to know. I think she should have a wikipedia page, please help me. thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.134.179.68 (talk) 04:46, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What is the name of that model? Is she popular enough to have a Wikipedia article on her? What was the reason your article was deleted? I have seen your contribution page but could not find anything helpful there--Tito Dutta (Send me a message)
Please see the specific notability guideline which covers models, Wikipedia:Notability (people)#Entertainers, and remember that reliable sources would need to have discussed the individual and the content you include. Dru of Id (talk) 07:14, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Need a third party to verify neutrality

    Hello!

I've been watching an ongoing issue over at Glenn McGee and it seems there's some spotty language there about what's neutral - More importantly, the line that reads "McGee is President of the Ethics Research Division at Celltex Therapeutics Corporation where he has recently come under fire." - Something about the recently come under fire part doesn't sit right with me, Could someone clear this up? --RedMongoose (talk) 07:39, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Watchlist bot (no, not that one)

Because my preferences are currently set to watchlist any article I edit, my personal watchlist fills up pretty quickly - every couple of weeks, I have to go through and prune a few hundred pages out. It's not a massivly onerous chore, but I was wondering if anyone knew of a bot that could partially automate the process (by, for example, removing deleted pages or closed AfD discussions)? If there isn't one, would anyone fancy writing it? Yunshui  11:58, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think this is possible for a third party bot because regular users and administrators cannot see or edit your watchlist, so even a bot with an admin flag would not be able to do this. However, I imagine a person could set up their own bot running under their own account to do this for themselves. So maybe this could be done If someone has written such a personal bot and would provide you the code for you to set up yourself. I have no idea how one would search for that though. By the way, thanks for the barnstar!--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:14, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Good point, hadn't thought of that. Well, I sure as hell don't have the skills to write my own, so unless some kind soul with a more technical brain has already done the job, I guess I'll just have to spend a bit of my time ticking boxes. Cheers, Yunshui  14:33, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Placing section below image, but alongside infobox- {{clear}} doesn't do it

In the stub article St Gregory's Minster I've added an image of the sundial and would like the next section to start below it - but not below the infobox, which is where {{clear}} would put it. Is there a way to do this? I know that in an ideal world we wouldn't have an image at the same level as the infobox, but this image is particularly informative in showing why the sundial is important, and the article is shorter than the infobox. Any ideas PamD 12:20, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Like this? I'm sure we must have a better system in place, but I've no idea what. Yunshui  14:37, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There are two variants of {{clear}} - {{clearright}} and {{clearleft}}. In this case, the latter is the template that you're looking for.-- OBSIDIANSOUL 00:25, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    FC Anzhi Makhachkala

    Resolved

Hi guys, I love your work

I thought I would let you know, some jerks have edited your page regarding the russian football team FC Anzhi Makhachkala

"The club was founded in 1991 by Mitch McCarthy and has played in the Russian league since 1992"

"On 23 August 2011, English trio Dan Shutler, Anthony Sparrow and Mitch McCarthy signed to play at FC Anzhi Makhachkala for a sum of around €64m, earning them 20.5 million euros a year each.[15] Eto'o went on to say that the addition of Sparrow was an added incentive for him signing for the club, insisting the qulaities of a player like Sparrow would give him the service he needs to score the goals to help Anzhi become one of Europe's elite"

None of these guys have anything to do with the club or football. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.156.58.140 (talk) 13:54, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It depends on the problem. If it can be discussed in public then try posting it here and see if anybody answers. We use the same software as Wikia. If it's a private matter then Wikipedia is not associated with Wikia and you are in the wrong place. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:38, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Username refusal

I have created an account and posted a brief summary abt myself. When I attempt to log in it tells me the username does not exist. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.59.76.97 (talk) 15:31, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

When did you create the account, and what was the name? We can look at a log that shows accounts created, and hopefully find a similar name there. It's possible you misspelled the name when you registered, in which case we can change the username for you via WP:CHU. But first things first. UltraExactZZ Said ~ Did 16:11, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Remember that user names are case sensitive, and that the spelling must be exact. If you tell us the user name, someone can check that it was registered. If you may have got the user name wrong but you generated a user page, if you can tell us what was in that we could search for it. If you have edited any articles, we could hopefully trace the user name from that. - David Biddulph (talk) 16:15, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 3.8 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. Crosswiki pictures

I just created the english page for Roberto Frinolli (under pressure from another editor who wanted to blank his name from a list because it was red linked--thats a side issue. In the process I found he already has several articles in other languages, including a nice picture on his home language of Italian. How do I include that picture on the english version? Trackinfo (talk) 18:05, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That may be a problem. The image used in the Italian article (it:File:Roberto Frinolli.JPG) has been uploaded to the Italian Wikipedia, based on the belief that it is public domain in Italy (PD-Italy). For the image to be used in the En Wikipedia article, it would have to either be uploaded to En Wikipedia or to Commons. The former would fall foul of En Wiki's non-free use criteria and the latter would be a problem because there is apparently some dispute as to whether PD-Italy is acceptable on Commons. – ukexpat (talk) 18:16, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Searching for specific types of images

    Hello!

I would like to search wikipedia for images that fall under the "public domain" category. I would like to exclude all other types of image copyrights like creative commons share-alike and so on. Is there some way to search for, say, Egyptian art in the public domain? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Xuwriter (talkcontribs) 18:20, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, most files on Wikipedia are hosted at commons.wikimedia.org. The files there, have categories and one of them is the Category:Public domain. All files in that category are PD. Art can be found in Category:PD Art. Egypt related files can be found in Category:PD Egypt. I hope this helps. I do not know of a better way. What does the lock icon after a hyperlink mean? I've only noticed these recently and I can't fathom what it might mean.

For an example, in the article on GNU Octave, look under "Other GUIs" after the link for OctaveNB.

Somewhat rhetorically, why is it so difficult to find the answer to this? I can't say I've exhausted every possibility, but I spent at least 10 minutes searching for an answer before I tried here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.109.210.28 (talk) 19:08, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You mean like https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Main_Page? That indicates a "secure" (https) connection. – ukexpat (talk) 19:23, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes - that's it - seems obvious now. Thanks.

Still, it is a major failure in documentation that I couldn't easily find the answer to that question on my own. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.109.210.28 (talk) 19:42, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

See more at Help:External link icons. That page may be difficult to find but the icons only signal information already present in the url. A lock icon for https is common on the Internet. See for example the many Google results on https lock icon. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:26, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That probably would have jumped out at me, but I was browsing the wikipedia site with https,so it kind of confused things. And I actually did manage to find the page you are talking about after I originally posted the question. Look at what I subsequently wrote on the Help Talk page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help_talk:Contents#Wikipedia_Icons — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.109.210.28 (talk) 21:26, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Does it go against WP:NPOV to collectively refer to articles in categories regarding people who are Nazis, fascists or KKK members as "anti-communists" rather than include the anti-communists category on individual articles of Nazis, fascists and KKK members as being anti-communist? It would seem to me that these groups are not intrinsically connected, and it doesn't seem like a very good idea to subcategorize them as if the concepts were directly related. Fascism/Nazism is not directly connected to opposition or criticism or communism, there are different reasons for the different groups to hold such views. Individuals who do not have fascist or Nazi leanings may hold viewpoints that criticize communism or oppose communism for their own reasons, and the overall ideologies are not defiantly connected to opposition to communism. Having these categorizes associated with anti-communism just doesn't seem very neutral to me.--WTF (talk) 19:29, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In my opinion, this category has got to be refined in such a way that it doesn't lump mainstream politicians with the raving loonies.--Wehwalt (talk) 19:41, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Not necessarily. A category like "American Christians", within its sub-categories, contains everyone from Christian Socialists like Frank Zeidler, to fascists and near-fascists of various ilks. --Orange Mike | Talk 21:42, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
In this case, subcategories don't seem to be used for most entries. And Michelle Bachmann? I'd like to see if something can be done here.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:07, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

rational point article is mysteriously messed up

Hi, the actual version of the article isn't the same as the "current version" as edited by User:Ozob some time ago. In fact the actual version doesn't resemble any previous version, as far as I know. The reference is now missing but the reference heading is moved onto a different section. But there is no record in the article history of any changes since Ozob's work. Thanks for your time.-Rich Peterson216.86.177.36 (talk) 21:16, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You are seeing a cached version of the page. Eventually the cache will be cleared and the new version will be sent, but there isn't any way I know of to hurry that process. Incidentally, users who are logged in have to be sent the uncached version because they may have custom options that need to be applied. This is another reason to register for an account, although it's not intentional.RJFJR (talk) 21:20, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ozob's version looks the same as the current version to me, but I purged the page. Does it look different now? - Purplewowies (talk) 21:26, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You can purge a page if you don't see the current version, but purging is easier for logged in users. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:29, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Start here: WP:YFA RudolfRed (talk) 22:50, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You should not assume that because other stuff exists that your company is entitled to an article. Since 2008 when NexTag was created, there is much more hostility to editing on behalf of a company. The NexTag article was nominated for speedy deletion as unambiguously promotional five minutes after being created. Fortunately for that article someone rewrote it rather than deleting it. Nowadays a promotional article would not be so lucky. And experience shows that users editing on behalf of a company are unable to write articles that are adequately neutral. Even if there were a possible article for your company, you are one of the least qualified people on earth to write it. —teb728 t c 02:17, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Request for Page Restoration

A few weeks ago, I moved for the deletion of an article (Masonic Lodges of North Carolina). A few days into the process, I realized that there was a potential copyright issue. The page was blanked and the AfD was closed very quickly, even though the primary author (EricCable) has stated that he managed to quickly round up permission to use the file on which the page was based, and that he now has the relevant permission.

It turned out that the user who blanked the page (He to Hecuba) was a banned user running a sock. As such, though I intend to move for deletion again, I would like to ask if the page could be restored so that it could at least be userfied. At this point, the blanking and deletion of the page strike me as vandalism by a banned user rather than legitimately addressing an issue that came up. EricCable got a raw deal out of this, and in my opinion the process was badly tainted by He to Hecuba's actions.Tyrenon (talk) 23:06, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What to do about a user's sandbox

A few days ago I reverted some vandalism at Ground zero where Ground Zero Official (talk · contribs) removed some content. I didn't even notice that they had actually replaced the deleted content by a piece about their band and then deleted it 15 minutes later without replacing the stuff they deleted. I have taken another look at their contributions and noticed User:Ground Zero Official/sandbox. Is that sandbox exempt from Wikipedia's policies because it is in the user space, or should WP:BAND apply there too? Astronaut (talk) 12:25, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Technically there's nothing wrong with the draft, WP:BAND doesn't really apply to user pages. Something at WP:SPEEDY may apply to it though. The user's user name is a problem, as it suggests a COI and possible role account rather than an individual, I have reported that at Wikipedia:Usernames for administrator attention. If the sandbox were older it might be deletable under WP:STALEDRAFT, but as it was created literally yesterday, it's not deletable. --NYKevin @728, i.e. 16:28, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Also please take note of the information boxes at the top of Talk:Nair, especially the bit about "The Wikipedia community has permitted administrators to impose discretionary sanctions..." I fear that if you continue to replace the entire article contents with your preferred versions copy & pasted from elsewhere, you could be subject to the General sanctions mentioned. Please, do discuss your issue with the article contents on Talk:Nair and gain consensus with other editors. Astronaut (talk) 13:07, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
As an involved editor, we can certainly discuss this on the article talk page, but I will point out that the editor is seeking to return the article to a much older version that definitely does not have consensus, contains numerous "references" that don't meet RS, and is generally non-neutral. Also, the fact that the user is reverting to an old version very soon after beginning indicates the user is very likely a returning editor; unfortunately, I can't figure out who, so I can't request an SPI. Ashokkerala, if you want to discuss potential changes, I recommend you raise one or two of them at a time on the article's talk page; first, though, you should review WP:NPOV and WP:RS. a good school Article

Can you please tell me what information is necessary to remove the stub tag from Carmel School Giridih. Link to guidelines and a Good School Article will be much appreciated. --ÐℬigXЯaɣ 14:03, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That article does not have a stub tag on it, and should not be classified a stub. Once an article starts to provide encyclopedic content (beyond a one or two sentences), it is no longer a stub, which this article clearly satisfies. Is that the question you wanted answering? ItsZippy (talkcontributions) 14:14, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Not stub, but there are no reliable third party sources giving the school a significant mention.. unless such sources are given this article is eligible for deletion. I've tagged as such, but you can present reliable sources to keep it. --lTopGunl (talk) 14:54, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)Ok, thanks for clarifying. Your best resource would probably be the Schools Wikiproject, who will have a number of dedicated editors who would be much better placed to answer your questions - it might be worth dropping a note by there. You can find a list of good school articles Schools Wikiproject#Good articles|here and their guidelines on school articles here. More generally, the most important thing with a school article seems to be neutrality. It is best to stick to facts about the school (the WikiProject suggests the avoidance of things like mission statements) and to avoid comparisons with other schools) I hope that is of some help - let me know if you need anything else. This is because the userbox holder and the show/hide box cannot be displayed next to each other. I don't know a way to fix it without really modifying the userpage. The only two options I can think of are to remove the show/hide box, or to add a block of text to your userpage that reaches to/past the userbox container's end. I had this problem with the to do list transcluded to my userpage, but I had a small enough group of userboxes on my page that I could add a small amount of text about myself and my editing. There might be a better solution to your problem, but I don't know of one. - Purplewowies (talk) 01:38, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Pictures

I fear that I do not really understand HTML, although I am able to use it on a very basic level. In the Bulova article, there is a section on the Accutron, some of which I have written (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulova#Accutron). There are two photos of Accutron tuning fork movements displayed, but there are a total of 5 different movements. I would like to add photos of the other movements below the existing photos. Exactly how do I do this? And one thing not mentioned here is how one finds one's answer. I am hoping that when an answer is posted I will receive an email notice with a link to the answer. If that is the case, it might be helpful to mention it in this page's instructions. If it isn't the case, I don't know how I'm going to actually get my answer.Tmaca (talk) 23:23, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

By default, any page that you edit will be added to your Watchlist, which you can see using the "My watchlist" link at the top of any Wikipedia page, so you can see when any changes are made to this page. - David Biddulph (talk) 02:39, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

image on the left screws up left-justification

An image on the left screws up left-justification (specifically, bulleted lists don't left-justify to preceeding text; I notice also that blockquotes don't indent). Is there any way to counteract this, to somehow tell the system that the image changes the logical location of the left margin, so a bulleted list will align with preceeding text? Thank you. Ihardlythinkso (talk) 23:47, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Please link to a page version where you see the problem and say which browser you have. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:50, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I created simple examples here, for both bullets and a blockquote.
Let me clarify I'm not reporting this as a *software bug*, I'm instead asking if there is some way to counter the bad effect on bullets and blockquotes by a left-placed image. (For example, some technique, or HTML, or magic word, that would counter it and allow bulleted lists and blockquotes to look normally under the new logical left margin set by the image. If there is no existing way to counter, it seems some new command could be written by some code-savvy expert, placed before and after the image, to tell text/lists/blockquotes that the location of the margin has changed. Where would I feed such a request to a WP programmer? The benefit of capability to move the logical left margin is of course that lists and blockquotes could then look the way they should. Ok, Ihardlythinkso (talk) 04:40, 26 February 2012 (UTC) p.s. I'm using IE8 browser.[reply]
Bulleted lists do get messed up when there's an image on the left along side the list... I usually resolve this by keeping the image to the right of the list. Maybe there's a work around some one else can specify. --lTopGunl (talk) 00:53, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Add a word to the dictionary

    To Whom It May Concern:

A friend of mine suggested that a word I recently learned should be added to the Wikipedia Dictionary. I don't know the origin of the word but I think his idea has merit so I would like to add this word to the dictionary. The word is: Ineptocracy (in-ep-toc'-ra-cy) -- a system of government where the least capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing, and where the members of society least likely to sustain themselves or succeed, are rewarded with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of a diminishing number of producers.

In order to use an image on Wikipedia it must be uploaded to Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons; images on other websites cannot be used directly. See Help:Files for how to upload and use images. Since Wikipedia has a goal of producing reusable content, images must be licensed under a free license, one that allows reuse by anyone for anything. Since your photos are “all rights reserved,” they are not eligible for upload (unless you license them under a free license).

    Nassim Haramein

Hi. I have to say that I find it absurd that you do not publish Nassim Harameins work. In the age of freedom of speech - when we have/should have learned from our past errors - such as silencing Einstein for 15 years prior to finally accepting his genius - you are taking us backwards!

You also publish Higgs Bosun which is just a theory - and one which will Never be proven correct.

This suggests you are a propaganda information site and no one there has the knowledge to discern what is important.

This is very surprising and disappointing

See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Nassim Haramein (2nd nomination). You are correct in that the existence of the Higgs boson is a theory; I suggest you read our article on theory to understand its meaning in the context of science. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 12:09, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Looking up "propaganda" may also be helpful. The factual accuracy of people's work or their theories is never a threshold of inclusion here, it's based the coverage they receive in reliable sources. If this individual has received significant coverage in the intervening time then perhaps someone will re-create the article in a way that follows our guidelines (someone without a conflict of interest). Яehevkor 12:12, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

thank you I know the meaning of propaganda and a theory

The point which you missed due to being defensive is you should not support Higgs Bosun over Nassim Harameins theories, therefore positioning the public that HB has more credibility!

That Is PROPOGANDA - Maybe it is you who shoulld look it up

If you had studied both theories you would find that position quite ridiculous

You are not a physics forum, therefore, you should not be guided by the peer manuals etc...but be neutral

It is ludicrous that the same thing is happening that happened to Einstein repeatedly! You are attempting to silence someone as their theories are too difficult for you to understand

NH crosses over science, physics, spirituality, cosmology so can be placed under any of these headings.

You have a page for Abraham/Hicks - Aleister Crowley and many others who are not recognized in peer manuals So what is your agenda here?

To ignore your reading public repeatedly strongly suggests some agenda

The public are voting by repeat requests and if you looked at any of his pages you would see the support and amount of people who you are ignoring.

Why do you think you have that right to silence so many

The credibility and hidden agenda of Wikipedia is what needs questioning here. Right now you have decided to become a political forum making value judgements where you have NO RIGHT TO DO SO

We have enough of that from our governments and media.

Now instead of a quick defensive response, which did not address what I wrote - how about a considered one instead

    Naming conventions

I posted this question on the 19th, and haven't gotten a final reply, so I'm bringing it back to the top. Liam987 13:40, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have a question about the naming conventions of articles that I was hoping someone could answer. I have already read the naming conventions article, and my question was not answered by that. I have written several articles (La Floresta (FGC) and Sant Cugat (FGC)) about train stations run by a Catalan train company called the FGC. I was at first unsure about how to name these pages, but then I found a page on the same topic, Les Planes (FGC), which used the naming convention (putting 'FGC' in parentheses after the name of the station) that I then adopted for the two previously mentioned articles I created. But I am not sure if this is the right way to name these pages, as the redlinks to them are often inconsistent. Also the articles about the FGC's train lines are named as FGC lineand then the name of the line (for example FGC line S1). Should the stations be named as La Floresta (FGC station)? or FGC station La Floresta? Also, if you look at the names of some of the articles about the FGC stations, you will see that they have the name of the article followed by(Barcelona Metro) (for example, Sarrià (Barcelona Metro), but it is only correct to name articles about FGC stations this way if they are serviced by a FGC line that is part of the Barcelona Metro system, which the stations I am talking about are not. Please advise. Thanks, Liam987 16:46, 19 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure of the percentage but Category:Wikipedia semi-protected pages has 2387 articles. MilborneOne (talk) 13:54, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    According to the statistics page there are 3,883,814 articles on Wikipedia, so... um ... 2387 / 3,883,814 .... {{#expr:2387/3883814}}...0.00061460203809966% Liam987 14:07, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I was guessing that sort of amount. I did however think that there would be more than that, or maybe it just varies on how popular that subject is. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gourleyo (talkcontribs) 14:04, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Given that we have many articles about small businesses, wide places in the mud in India, and similar that probably rarely see a page view, it would be more interesting to know what percentage of articles that are rated C class or higher are semiprotected.--Wehwalt (talk) 14:09, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How many fully protected articles (excluding redirects) are there? ''GOURLEYO'' <small>Edit at Wikia!</small> (talk) 14:11, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There are 1,794 fully-protected pages in the mainspace, per Special:ProtectedPages. That would be 0.046% of all mainspace pages. However, I don't know how to winnow out how many of those are redirects.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 14:52, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
A better metric would be ratios of page views, which would roughly correspond to the probability of seeing a page that is protected. I am sure that protected pages have much higher than average page views, which will explain why it seems like the proportion of pages protected is higher than it is.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 22:29, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, you are probably right. For example, the article Greendown Community School would not be protected, while some articles like Queen Elizabeth II would be. Probably about 1/3 popular articles would be semi protected but only about 1 in a few hundered pages overall would be. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gourleyo (talkcontribs) 15:29, 27 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The page that's coming up is User:Maya Frida Barr/Adam Tedder, which I assume you used to draft the article. When you moved the article from there to the article namespace that page was automatically made into a redirect to your article. I would recommend putting {{db-u1}} on the page (User:Maya Frida Barr/Adam Tedder), and an administrator will come by and deleted it for you. I have deleted the redirect on the page so that you will not be redirected when you go to delete it. Hope that helps, Liam987 14:46, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have deleted it. Note Maya that we don't have control over Google. It may take a while for Google's index to be updated to reflect this and even after the deletion it may still appear. See this external Google page about removing content, though I once tried to use this long ago and found it mystifying.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 15:05, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
When you asked about this draft last month you were told that the article needed references to demonstrate the notability of the subject. That was sound advice, but you seem to have tried to move the article to mainspace without including any such references, so it may well not last long there. It would have been advisable for you to keep the draft in your user space until it was ready for publication. - David Biddulph (talk) 16:17, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How do I dispute an edit performed by another editor

Another editor has added a statement to an article I have been working on. In my opinion, this new statement gives undue weight to a certain point of view and also incorrectly interprets the citation he provides. I believe that the other editor is well meaning and is trying to improve the article.

I would like to somehow flag the statement he added and direct him to the talk page but I am not sure how exactly to go about this. Is there a "How to dispute a statement" article somewhere? Thanks--Bill 17:46, 26 February 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by BillF4 (talkcontribs)

About 1 hour ago (11:30 am) today, I registered for a new account. the user name (Swami Savitripriya), password, and email address went through fine, and I entered my new account. Premier League table

How do I indicate a team in the English Premier League has qualified for the Europa League, but the phase is still uncertain? In other words, how can I make "TQ" appear beside the team's name on the league table? — Preceding unsigned comment added by MasashiInoue (talkcontribs) 19:29, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You can add the parameter |tournamentqualified=y to the team's row (see example by clicking "Edit" at [4]) but it doesn't sound like the time for it. Where do you want to do it? PrimeHunter (talk) 23:53, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you mean so that google doesn't index them, add __NOINDEX__ to the top somewhere. It's not possible to hide them from other users, but it does at least make them harder to find on accident. sonia19:38, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Great thanks, so if there's a unique name in it, then Google (eventually) won't index it, but will it still be found through a search at Wikipedia?2829 VC 20:17, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
A Wikipedia search can find it, but only if the searcher uses "Advanced search" and includes the "user" namespace in the search. -- John of Reading (talk) 20:51, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Need to add a parameter to a template

As a result of discussion at WT:NRHP, {{NRHP row}} was updated so that it will add pages to Category:NRHP list missing coordinates and display the text "Coordinates missing" if the pages transclude the template without including coordinates in the lat and lon parameters. The discussion also included a provision for an override, for situations in which we don't have coordinates but don't want the text or the maintenance category; however, Multichill, who made the update, overlooked adding the override, and he's busy enough that he's not been able to do it. Could someone please add code to the template so that the word "override" in these parameters prevents the category and the extra text from appearing? For an example of what I mean, see this diff of my sandbox: the first line of the table is how a line looks with coordinates, the third is how it looks if it lacks coordinates, and the second (with the "override" option) should look like the third except without the "Coordinates missing" or the maintenance category. Nyttend (talk) 23:37, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think this would be neater as a separate parameter rather than a special value for the lat/lon parameters. Have a look at User:John of Reading/X1 and User:John of Reading/X2, which use and implement a "nolatlon=true" option. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:59, 27 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Does exactly what I'm talking about; thanks. To implement this, what do I need to do? Will it work if I simply copy this edit into the template with attribution, and then add the nolatlon=true to transclusions that need it? Nyttend (talk) 17:19, 27 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I've updated {{NRHP row}} and its documentation; you just need to add nolatlon=true to the relevant articles. -- John of Reading (talk) 17:31, 27 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Gang Stalking / Cause Stalking

I believe that the Gang-Stalking/Cause Stalking page has been written by a perpetrator who is trying to deny the reality of this heinous crime. A lot of perpetrators/disinformation agents do that all over the internet trying to mis-inform people on the excistance of secret crimes such as Gang Stalking. Gang Stalking is another name for COINTELPRO. If you/those who edit Wikipedia or the dis information agent with the user name (Saudade7 ) want to hide the real crimes that are destroying lives in America, then you're enabling secret crimes to go on un-detected by claiming that it is a mental illness. And that means you are an ENABLER of a vicious Organized crime.

Thats exactly what the perpetrators want. I suggest you re-edit the whole content and bring this heinous crime to light, so that other people can learn about it. here's one example of gang stalking i have below ....

    http://conspiracyplanet.com/channel.cfm?channelid=36&contentid=9592

I have a lot of other proofs about this crime existing all over the world .As long as there is Cointelpro there will always be Gang stalking of targeted individuals. Don't tell me Cointelpro never existed either ? So as the previous editor "Skitzs" said it, unless you are part of the Organized crime, you should be able to tell the truth and not let crimes like this go by un detected !!!

Thanks and i hope that you do the right thing.

    Newbie file uploader questions

I have a file that I wish to upload for use in Plummer v. State (of Indiana)

It is an ASCII Text file of the 1893 Indiana Supreme Court decision Plummer v. State 135 Ind. 308, 34 N.E. 968 Ind. 1893.

Firstly, is Wikimedia Commons the proper place to upload this file?

Assuming that the answer is yes, I have the following questions:

Should I be asking this on some Wikimedia Commons help desk instead of here?

When I tried to upload the file at https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/wiki/Special:UploadWizard I got a message saying "This wiki does not accept filenames that end in the extension '.txt'." Am I in the wrong place for uploading text files?

On various Wikimedia files I have seen an infobox saying that it is free for Wikimedia to use because it was created by the US federal government and other similar infoboxes referring to state governments. Is there a central place where all such permission boxes are listed? I am of course particularly interested in one from the State of Indiana and possibly one that says 1893 is old enough to be out of copyright. --Guy Macon (talk) 21:31, 27 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What is the purpose of uploading a txt file? If you want to use it as a reference in an article, there is no need to upload it, just use the appropriate citation template, {{cite court}}, completing as many parameters as you can. References do not have to be online, just verifiable. – ukexpat (talk) 21:48, 27 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
In this case, being accessible is extremely desirable because there are a large number of people who believe the false quote that is mentioned at Plummer v. State (of Indiana) and who would like to do a text search on the entire decision.
I had a very difficult time finding the text to this court case until some law students with free access to an expensive ($3000 per year or $150 for one download) database of legal decisions found it and one of them put it up on Pastebin.
So basically we have a public record published before 1923 and thus in the public domain that is only available if you are a law student or a member of a large law firm. Now it's my turn to move it somewhere that is suitable for use as a Wikipedia citation and then to document the exact steps it took so there is no question of it being a fake. --Guy Macon (talk) 22:13, 27 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well you could convert it to PDF and upload that, but you will still have a verifiability issue -- txt and PDF files can be open to accusations of manipulation. – ukexpat (talk) 22:17, 27 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think I can address the verifiability issue if I can get multiple law students to attest to having verified that what I uploaded matches what is behind the paywall. Alas, converting it to PDF will make that a lot harder - if it is text they can use any number of programs to compare the database version with the Commons version, but if it is PDF the comparison will be harder. So, it looks like I am stuck unless anyone has a better suggestion. --Guy Macon (talk) 22:53, 27 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The book is titled " People want Toast not Toasters: Lessons and Maxims for Design and Designing" and will be sold in a total quantity of less than 500. The book uses the Toast and Toaster analogy as a metaphor, and to add flavour to the text I would like your permission to incorporate the wikiHOW (two page) section on How To Make Toast, which begins with - "Steps 1. Choose the kind of bread you wish to use...", and ends with the "Items needed - Bread, Bread knife (for unsliced bread), etc." Obviously these instructions will be appropriately referenced. Thank you for your help. You'll need to ask that question of wikiHow, not here; this is Wikipedia, which is a totally different organisation. The only connection is that they both use MediaWiki software. - David Biddulph (talk) 21:40, 27 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Lest there be any further confusion, this is wikiHow's website: http://www.wikihow.com/  – ukexpat (talk) 21:45, 27 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    ARTICLE

Im sorry I use wikipedia multiple times a day & very few times have I not found an article but it is way too complicated & time-consuming to suggest an article. I would like a bio on actor Ulas Kilic from the BBC's "MI-5"/"Spooks". Im sorry if this is not the way to do that but i do not have the time to go through a hundred pages to request one. I suggest someone make that process a little shorter. Thank-you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.239.2.96 (talk) 21:46, 27 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Take a look at WP:Requested articles. – ukexpat (talk) 21:59, 27 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It looks as if you haven't clicked the relevant link to resumbit your draft. See the second bullet point in the box from the previous review. - David Biddulph (talk) 21:55, 27 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Cannaberg still needs work IMHO, so re-submission may be fruitless. – ukexpat (talk) 21:56, 27 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. The references (improperly formed, but visible in the last diff[6]) are unacceptable by wikipedia standards - see WP:RS for what is required. AndyTheGrump (talk) 21:59, 27 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Sandbox as training ground?

I set up User:Static11/sandbox to learn how to use infoboxes, as well as teach my wife how to edit pages without feeling like she was going to ruina real article if she messed up. I didn't have a handy topic to write a real article about, so mocked up an article about a birthday party for our daughter (to give the wife some incentive to actually try out editing the page - which worked!). Everything I've read about sandboxes says that limited personal use is fine, as long as the content doesn't stay there forever. User:Future_Perfect_at_Sunrise deleted the sandbox (speedily) less that 24 hours after its creation, despite Wikipedia:UP#DELETE and Wikipedia:About_the_Sandbox both read to me that they condone the use of a sandbox in this manner, and Wikipedia:User_pages EXPLICITLY says this is not a criterion for speedy deletion.

I don't particularily want to call sour grapes, but it sure seems like the internet opinion of Wikipedia moderators being bureaucratic overlords may hold some truth after all. I'm less than inclined to continue donating money and become more than an infrequent editor when this is how the active commuinity treats less-experienced members. Two different URLs for same page comes up as different versions.
