FuboTV (stylized as fuboTV) is an American over-the-top internet television service that focuses primarily on channels that distribute live sports, including NFL, MLB, NBA, MLS and international soccer, plus news, network television series and movies.[1]
There are several service options with different channel lineups, including fubo (base package), fubo Extra, and add-on packages like fubo Latino and fubo Português.[2]
February of 2019, Fubo Latino and Fubo Potuguês were removed for new customers and grandfathered in for existing customers.[3]
History
FuboTV was co-founded in January 2015 by David Gandler (CEO), Alberto Horihuela (CMO) and Sung Ho Choi. At launch, FuboTV cost $7 per month and offered live streams from soccer-centric channels. In early 2017, Fubo pivoted to become a broader streaming service, adding entertainment and news programming in addition to soccer and sports from NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL.[4]
Between August and November 2017, FuboTV added CBS,[5] MSG and MSG+,[6] Pac-12 networks,[7] NFL Network and NFL RedZone Channel[8] and NESN[9] to its channel lineup,
On September 13, 2017, FuboTV announced Advanced DVR, a paid add-on to its cloud DVR feature.[10]
On October 6, 2017, FuboTV announced that it became an official sponsor of the LA Kings professional hockey team.[11]
On October 10, 2017, the company announced that it had surpassed 100,000 subscribers.[12] On February 5, 2018, it was reported that the company surpassed 150,000 total viewers during Super Bowl LII.[13] In October 2018, fuboTV announced it was approaching 250,000 subscribers, a +100% increase over the prior year. It also had 30,000 net additions in Q3 2018, ahead of most of its larger competitors and a sign that interest in vMVPDs continues to grow.[14]
In March of 2018, FuboTV added SNY being one of the first to heave all three RSN in the New York Metro Area[15]
Fubo starting around the summer of 2018 testing with NBC, Fox and BeIN Sports with 4K channels for select events.[16]
As of September 2018, fuboTV offers live streaming and VOD programming from CBS, FOX, NBC, AMC, TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network, CNN and Showtime.[17]
According to Fast Company, FuboTV still calls itself “sports-first,” but instead of being the Netflix of soccer, it’s now pitching itself as a direct competitor to cable TV and to live-streaming bundles such as Sling TV and DirecTV Now. FuboTV was the first live-TV streaming service to support 4K HDR video for the World Cup, and it was the first to adopt an industry standard for handling sports blackouts. It also introduced dynamic ad insertion ahead of Hulu and YouTube TV.[18]
Investors in FuboTV include AMC Networks, 21st Century Fox, Luminari Capital, Northzone, Sky, and Scripps Networks Interactive.[19]
In December 2018, Fubo announced that they were going to expand into Spain.[20] April 5 of 2019 it went live in Spain
In the beginning of 2019, FuboTV under Fubo Soccer picked up exclusive rights of Liga MX for English broadcast on Friday nights[21]
FuboTV became the second over-the-top internet television service to get integrated to the TV app on Apple TV, iPhone, and iPad.[22]
On February 11, 2019, AT&T Sportsnet Southwest was added, becoming the first Virtual MVPD to have a AT&T Sportsnet[23]
On February 20, 2019, it was announced that channels from Viacom Networks were going to be added on April 30, 2019.[24] [25]
On March 5, 2019, FuboTV expanded its 4K support to BTN.[26]
Early 2019 FuboTV went to one plan with its Fubo Extra package being a add-on right after Viacom Channels were added.
May 1, 2019 FuboTV added Comet to it lineup.[27]
May 10, 2019 FuboTV announced Launch a Ad-Supported Channel Q3 of 2019[28]
May 13, 2019 RAI Italia was added to Fubo Cycling Package.
