Template merge completed

Hi. I know that the discussion results for the suggestion of merging {{idwc}} and {{idw-commons}} into {{fdw-iw}} (aka {{fdw-commons}}) were "no consensus", but it was a pretty logical and straight-forward issue. By making sure that the new template is backwards compatible to the old ones, hopefully there won't be any issues. I have completed the merge by adding some additional wording and attributes to {{fdw-iw}}. —Willscrlt “Talk” ) 11:49, 17 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for doing it. --The Evil IP address (talk) 22:37, 17 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your rollback request

Hello The Evil IP address, I have granted rollback rights to your account in accordance with your request. Please be aware that rollback should be used to revert vandalism/spam/blatantly unconstructive edits, and that using it to revert anything else (by revert-warring or reverting edits you disagree with) can lead to it being removed from your account...sometimes without any warning, depending on the admin who becomes aware of any misuse. For practice, you may wish to see Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback. Good luck. Acalamari 17:01, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Requested moves that are never moved

You mean like when you ask a mod to move the page and they never move it right?Wiki Greek Basketball (talk) 10:27, 10 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article is spelled wrong and is not the name of the person as it is spelled in English. You cannot move it because there is another page already as a redirect and if you ask pages to be moved mods never do it. So stop lecturing me alreadyWiki Greek Basketball (talk) 10:35, 10 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe you can use it instead of asking for all the pages to be deleted. Since you are deleting the actual English names of these articles. And FYI I have requested numerous times for articles to be moved and they never are. Or are you going to make me re-do everything just so you can brag about putting deletion tags all over the site?Wiki Greek Basketball (talk) 10:44, 10 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello The Evil IP address. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Vampiresandwerewolfs all you need to know about them and more, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Not nonsense - there is meaningful content. Thank you. GedUK  11:34, 10 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, thanks for the information. I'm somewhat new to the deletion processes, so please bear with me. Doing it your way is probably the better solution, I must admit. --The Evil IP address (talk) 11:39, 10 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there! Nonsense articles are ones that say "SHOHGOUhZ gouhshuids 'sgd" or "Gun blue giraffe pint wallet"; ie they make no sense. This article, whilst not appropriate for wikipedia, doesn't meet that criteria, or any of the speedy criteria. PROD is best in these situations. GedUK  11:46, 10 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I note that you have commented on the first phase of Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Biographies of living people

As this RFC closes, there are two proposals being considered:

  1. Proposal to Close This RfC
  2. Alternate proposal to close this RFC: we don't need a whole new layer of bureaucracy

Your opinion on this is welcome. Okip 03:30, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Minor edits

FYI you seem to have set the "Mark all edits minor by default" flag in your Editing preferences. You should consider unchecking this. Votes on process pages, warnings and XfD notices left for users, etc., are not considered "minor edits". Best regards, –xenotalk 18:50, 22 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the information. I checked it so that I don't forget to mark edits as minor, but I'm fine with unchecking it and not to use it in these specific situations. --The Evil IP address (talk) 19:02, 22 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yea, it's preferable to mistakenly mark a minor edit as "major" (non-minor, regular, etc.) than to mark a "major" edit as minor. –xenotalk 19:04, 22 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sure thing, so as you might notice with this edit, I unchecked it. --The Evil IP address (talk) 19:12, 22 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cat:Image deletion template shortcuts

No, Category:Image deletion template shortcuts can not simply be renamed. If needs to be nominated at WP:CFD using {{cfr}}. In the nomination I'd simply say to match parent Category:File deletion templates. Vegaswikian (talk) 21:24, 22 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your edit to Template:Puf2

Do people often specify an empty "image" parameter, rather than completely omitting it, so that changing {{{image|{{{1}}}}}} to the much longer {{<includeonly>subst:</includeonly>#if:{{{image|}}}|{{{image}}}|{{{1}}}}} is worthwhile? The output for each when the template is substed is identical except for something like {{subst:puf2|example.svg|image=}}. Anomie 00:31, 22 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I used this coding, because when you use the 1= parameter instead of the image parameter, this would leave coding like "{{{image|Example.svg}}}", which is more difficult to read than simply "Example.svg". Another option would be to remove the 1= parameter altogether and only use |image=, but I'm not sure if it's used by scripts or if it has been the former parameter of the template, as in these cases it would be better to keep it. --The Evil IP address (talk) 13:44, 22 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You should actually try substing a template containing {{{image|{{{1}}}}}} while not specifying "image=", you might be surprised. Anomie 15:55, 22 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
In fact, you're right and I stand corrected. Don't know why I thought this coding would be necessary, but I fixed it now. Thanks for the suggestion. --The Evil IP address (talk) 17:38, 22 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Template history-merge request

Replaceable fair use File:Pomos idol.jpg

Thanks for tagging File:Pomos idol.jpg for deletion and notifying me on my talk page. At the time I imported it from Greek Wikipedia I believe it had little to no information, and I wasn't sure if it could be copyrighted as a photo of an ancient sculpture. However, now the Greek Wikipedia version seems to have a copyright tag on it so I think it's reasonable to conclude that it is copyrighted, and you have correctly identified it as replaceable. I haven't been able to locate a free version but I'll put out a request for one from our Cypriot compatriots. I've gone ahead and deleted it early since I was the uploader. -kotra (talk) 18:18, 25 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, works for me. It would be great if more users would react like this to problems with their uploads. --The Evil IP address (talk) 18:52, 25 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I take the "free" part of "the free encyclopedia" seriously so I get that non-free content needs to used only under strict conditions. Non-free image tagging must be tedious and thankless so I appreciate it. -kotra (talk) 19:09, 25 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia history (WP:Usability)

I think Wikipedia:WikiProject Usability/Main Page/Screenshots is a valid part of the history of Wikipedia:WikiProject Usability, even though the images themselves are gone. It gives some idea of what was being done back then. Would you mind if I undeleted it, tidied it up, and marked it as historical? I'll leave the same note with the admin who deleted. Carcharoth (talk) 05:14, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Well, I can see no point in it, and I would prefer if more people than solely admins could view deleted versions, since (in many cases at least, though not always) it's no harm done. But it would be a lie if I said it would bother me that much that it needs to remain deleted, I just don't think it's useful like this. --The Evil IP address (talk) 12:38, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Templates

Hey, I seem to be fulfilling quite a few of your {{editprotected}} requests. You might want to check my work since you obviously have the technical knowledge but not the right to edit the pages whereas I'm the exact opposite! Btw, since your changes seem to be Main Page-related, is there not something that could be added to the MP itself to prevent having to change the templates? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:44, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hm, the error seems to be within {{Cat handler}} or {{If pagename}}, but I have a easier solution which will fix this problem for now. However, if it's decided to make use of the {{Lang}} template within DKY or In the news to make the text more readable for machines, this problem would temporarily appear again. The fix is at Template:Wikipedialang/sandbox, where I've created a /core template, which makes sure to always use the same formatting, which would also make initial editing of the template easier. There's no way of putting something on the Main Page, the only way to avoid it would be to move it out of the main space (which I'd clearly support), but this proposal has been denied several times already. --The Evil IP address (talk) 10:53, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewer granted

You have been granted the 'reviewer' userright, allowing you to to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. –xenotalk 13:33, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, will probably be useful if I come across an unreviewed article. --The Evil IP address (talk) 14:12, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please be careful to check a page's talk for sub-pages (such as archives) before moving it. Template talk:Sisterlinks/Archive 1 was orphaned after you moved the template. Cheers. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 09:43, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

editsemiprotected template

I noticed that you moved the editsemiprotected template with an edit summary about improving readability. Is there a community consensus for renaming templates for readability? I find the concept somewhat laughable, since a template is generally not read by our readers; it is merely written by our editors. Also, I find the new naming to be less useful for our editors, since they now need to remember not only the sequence of characters which make up the name, but also whatever arbitrary punctuation and spacing someone decided to add. (To me, this seems comparable to changing the spelling to match a preferred English variant or removing the vowels to save space.) If there was no discussion beforehand to establish a consensus, please help me understand the benefit of this change which outweighs the disruption. Thanks, Celestra (talk) 23:21, 10 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I'd say there's pretty much a silent consensus, i.e. it's common practice to name them like that, though it's not written anywhere AFAIK (but some template moves have been discussed IIRC). But I can also explain why I moved the template. I moved it after I saw that the very similar {{Edit protected}} was moved, but that's not the only reason. I generally feel that it's easier for our newbies to read space separated words in template names. Whereas I'm perfectly fine with shortbreaks to use, I feel that the base page title of a template should use proper spelling, e.g. spaces where spaces there should be. One is used to stop reading a word after a space, otherwise you usually continue and might not immediately get the word. And once you understood the two words, you can just as easily remember them and you don't need to remember where there are spaces. The only problem in this case may be the hyphen, but I thought it to be good like that since it's spelt everywhere like that. Also, I don't think so many people (in this case) are using the template directly, most simply press the button on the edit page. But I could go with replacing the hyphen with a space, though I woulnd't like that. --The Evil IP address (talk) 10:29, 11 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the thorough explanation. Having a background in software development, I have found that the answer to the question of how best to name things is very subjective and an area of strong opinions. What appears obviously better to one person may strike another person as not even being a valid option. Two practices seem to help with this: establishing an explicit standard for new work and respect the status quo for existing work. As I was trying to find an appropriate place to start a discussion to test whether a consensus exists for a standard, I found this discussion which appears to have been implemented at Wikipedia:Template_namespace#New template creation. Interestingly, Rich Farmbrough is in that discussion and I believe he is the person who inserted the space in Edit protected to which you referred. I still think respecting the status quo is a good practice, but I have to assume you weighed that against other factors as you made your decision. I guess the summary here is: never mind. Thanks, Celestra (talk) 14:33, 11 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File source problem with File:Reich mir nicht deine Hand.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:Reich mir nicht deine Hand.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 03:35, 14 April 2011 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Skier Dude2 (talk) 03:35, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image File:Reich mir nicht deine Hand.jpg

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Reich mir nicht deine Hand.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Skier Dude2 (talk) 03:36, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Copyvio template changes

Hi. There are some concerns about the changes you recently made to the copyvio templates, which seem to have disrupted the function of one template and the documentation of another. For now, they've been reverted back pending conversation. I wanted to let you know about it so that you can clarify at Template_talk:Copyviocore#Restore_to_prior_version. Thanks. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 22:01, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I will take a look what's wrong with it. --The Evil IP address (talk) 11:01, 11 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. I'm sorry to say that your change is still not working. It was no longer generating proper notices. I would fix it if I could, but since I can't and we need it to work now, I've reverted. :/ Maybe you should run some tests of what you're trying to do in sandbox to see if you can work out the issues? (Did not move it, since it seems to be working in spite of the name change.) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 20:23, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No, I've had to move it back, too. At the new name, the Duplication Detector Report stopped displaying. Now that it's back, it's returned. I don't have any idea why, but that would be something to work out, I guess, before a move. :/ --Moonriddengirl (talk) 20:29, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hm, I actually tested it, but apparently I didn't notice these errors. I'll take a look at it again soon. --The Evil IP address (talk) 14:43, 13 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

((Cat handler))

Hello Evil IP. I have responded to the message you left at Template talk:Cat handler#Sandboxes.

--David Göthberg (talk) 07:53, 18 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

While looking into this I noticed that you tried to deploy {{cat handler}} in the {{lang}} template. After some testing and staring at all version of the code I finally found the error: The code that you supplied on the talkpage of {{lang}} was correct and should have worked. It does work in the sandbox. However when HJ Mitchell copied that code to the {{lang}} template he accidentally moved the closing brackets and thus damaged the code.
That discussion has already been archived, but for future reference I left a message in the archive explaining what went wrong. See Template talk:Lang/Archive 2#Change categorization method.

I warn you because you vandalize {{copyvio}}. --Phanuruch8555 Talk Experiment lab 12:30, 19 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, it was not my intention to vandalize (as you called it) this template. My intent was to improve its horrible coding a bit, but the copyvio hunters apparently have many expectations in their template that I just couldn't completely fulfill. Usually, such breaking changes on formatting fix-ups aren't the case when fixing templates, and in this case, I'll probably have to do a bit more than usual. --The Evil IP address (talk) 09:11, 24 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Shakespeare

Please do not change the titles of Shakespeare articles without getting consensus for each article. The use of "Shakespeare" to refer to William Shakespeare is uncontroversial. There is no consistency in titles because mechanical consistency often leads to ugly phrasing. It is not necessary or useful, IMO. A previous attempt to change the title of the Portraits article was reverted by another regular Shakespeare editor, so I have restored the old title. Paul B (talk) 11:50, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello and sorry for the late reply. I've moved the article because I noted many other articles using his full name as well, e.g. William Shakespeare's religion or Sexuality of William Shakespeare, so I wanted to make it consistent with those. Also, I think it's useful to name articles in line with its main article, even though I recognize that Shakespeare may be one of the few exceptions where the article name might be shortened. --The Evil IP address (talk) 16:43, 23 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Spaced en dashes

I'm thankful to see all of the pages you've moved removing spaces around en dashes. I've had a hard time keeping up with the recent debate on the issue–has consensus been reached or a a policy change taken effect? —danhash (talk) 21:55, 31 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the MOS was apparently changed. It now says "The en dash in all of the compounds above is unspaced.". This discussion apparently was the deciding one, but I'm not sure, as it's very chaotic. Anyway, there are still many pages in need of fixing. --The Evil IP address (talk) 11:22, 1 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I stopped following the discussion because it was so huge and heated I didn't have the time to follow or contribute to it. But the link you gave doesn't have any recent discussion—I was under the impression this was still being discussed quite recently. Seeing an absence of hate and hell-fire on your talk page, I am assuming your page moves are accepted (which I am very glad of), but before I put myself in the line of fire I just want to make sure I don't start a whole new round of anger. There are four more pages I felt like needed to be moved (I'm sure there are many more, these are just ones I have come across):
Do you know of any more recent discussion/consensus? —danhash (talk) 15:47, 1 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
To be frank, I haven't even followed the discussion. I just asked and folks answered me that it was recently changed. The pages linked to should be moved, only "Canada – United States border" is currently discussed, because I couldn't move it due to its protection. Btw, if you want some more pages, there are many in "Category:Bilateral relations of <add country here>". --The Evil IP address (talk) 16:34, 1 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome, thanks for the info! I started moving some pages, including updating text in the lead, updating DEFAULTSORTs, and cleaning up double redirects (as well as some regular links). —danhash (talk) 17:31, 1 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

China vs. People's Republic of China

The problem with renaming articles with a simple "China" instead of using PR China is that there are tow governments claiming to represent China and a large number of states have changed diplomatic affiliations over the years, see People's Republic of China – South Africa relations and Republic of China – South Africa relations as but some of the examples. I ask that you move the pages back pending a discussion.--TM 16:33, 1 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, didn't even know that. I think I only moved one page, but I left the dash as is because it should stay like that anyway. --The Evil IP address (talk) 16:36, 1 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Google custom

Hi, why is this (and four similar edits to other templates) necessary? --Redrose64 (talk) 18:00, 1 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, with the recent update to MediaWiki 1.18, we have received support for protocol relative URLs (see documentation). Since Google supports HTTP and HTTPS for some services, we should amend the links accordingly. However, since there should be no issues with linking to HTTPS, one might as well link there as people might like that. --The Evil IP address (talk) 18:10, 1 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Why not use the protocol-independent form that MW 1.18 provides, like this? That would avoid unnecessary switching between protocols. --Redrose64 (talk) 18:38, 1 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I thought about that, too, but I thought we could also use HTTPS since there may be people who use Wikipedia on HTTP because they're readers only, but who have an account on Google. --The Evil IP address (talk) 18:42, 1 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bilateral relations articlwes

I see that you have recently gone and moved, without discussion it seems, articles and categories under Category:Bilateral relations of Russia (and no doubt in other countries categories as well). Can you please go and unrevert all of your moves, as they do not conform with endash usage in English language, and as per WP:DASH. Russavia Let's dialogue 16:48, 3 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. In List of songs based on a film, you recently added a link to the disambiguation page One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Film categories

Hi. Please don't remove the year/country/language cats from films articles, as you did with this and several other articles. I know that they are generated from the code in the infobox, but I don't believe this is a reason to remove them. Any questions, please head over to the Film Project. Thanks. Lugnuts (talk) 18:33, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think it idiot-proofs the article, as most users would expect to see the category there, and not have to wonder how it is generated. Also I think your edit summaries of "fixed dashes using a script" are very misleading, esp if you are doing something other than fixing dashes. Lugnuts (talk) 18:46, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed understandable. Where did it happen that I did something else than fixing dashes without stating it in my edit summary. I generally try to be descriptive in the summary, so that fellow users have an easier way of understanding what I did. --The Evil IP address (talk) 18:49, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) It's not a good idea to rely on the infobox carrying out the categorisation, because the infobox template might change and so remove articles from cats that they should be in; see also WP:TEMPLATECAT. --Redrose64 (talk) 20:04, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, this appears to be the point in infobox categories for me. Easily changing, adding or removing without having to go through a batch of articles. --The Evil IP address (talk) 20:37, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Move of template

I see you moved the Template:Improve categories. I think the previous name was clear enough, and not misleading. Also, who says that "improve" means "additional"? Was there any discussion about this? If not then please move the template back to where it was. Debresser (talk) 17:01, 29 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I was bold to move it immediately. The word "improve" sounds more like making something better, i.e. exchaning the current categories with better ones, rather than adding new ones. "Additional categories" has no ambiguity what one expects from the fellow editors. --The Evil IP address (talk) 17:08, 29 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
But it might be wrong. Like in the case when a general category should be replaced by a more specific one. That is an improvement. Of the categories on the page. It does not say to improve the category pages, just the categories on the page. That is clear enough. I will undo your move, if I can. Please discuss this at the appropriate forum, if you still insist. Debresser (talk) 17:24, 29 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The template actually says "This article needs additional categories. Please help out by adding categories to it so that it can be listed with similar articles.", so I'm guessing it's not made for the scenario you described. If it is, I'd be in no way opposed to the current title, but then the text of it and the doc should be clarified accordingly. --The Evil IP address (talk) 17:34, 29 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that the text and the name don't fit. Something to raise on the talkpage. If you post there, I'll be happy to join the discussion. Debresser (talk) 17:38, 29 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

User script listings cleanup project

I'm leaving this message for known script authors and recent contributors to Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts.

This scripts listing page is in dire need of cleanup. To facilitate this, I've created a new draft listing at Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts cleanup. You're invited to list scripts you know to be currently working and relevant. Eventually this draft page can replace the current scripts listing.

If you'd like to comment or collaborate on this proposal, see the discussion I started here: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject User scripts#Scripts listing cleanup project. Thanks! Equazcion (talk) 00:58, 25 Mar 2012 (UTC)

Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon. It's 1-3 June and registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, just mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

Our goals for the event are to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Check out the the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC and our other events.

Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page, here or at mediawiki.org. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator 14:52, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

User script list deprecation

Wikipedia's list of user scripts is in bad shape, in that it is disorganized and contains many non-working, unmaintained, or thoroughly obsolete entries. Cleanup has been on the to-do list since 2007, but little progress has been made. Instead, the whole list is now set to be deprecated on 1 May 2012, to be replaced with a new list. This draft list has been up for about a month, and in that time I've been soliciting script users and authors to come add scripts they know to be working and relevant.

If you know of scripts that you would like to survive this deprecation (and are confirmed working and relevant), you're welcome to add them to the new list. Note that the old list will be retained and linked from the main list, so there is no real deadline. Thanks for your help. Equazcion (talk) 00:57, 22 Apr 2012 (UTC)

Since you created the documentation at Template:Wikipedia languages/core/doc, would you be able to help answer the question I raised here? I have to disagree with you here. JavaScript and CSS

Hello! I want to know if we can have JavaScript and CSS for templates like how we can have it for a Userpage?
By the way, can we have CSS for userpage as well?
14.139.242.195 (talk) 11:58, 17 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hey, thanks for your question. I'm not exactly sure what you want to know, can you specify your question? I'll try my best to answer your question: Most templates use CSS classes or id's that allow a customisation of their appearance. The same applies to many userpage templates. Furthermore, you can use any formatting allowed for the formatting of your userpage, which allows you to customise it to your wants. Please let me know if this answers your question. Regards, --The Evil IP address (talk) 09:57, 18 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That was not exactly what I was looking for. Um, In the style attribute, we can't have pseudo elements, as far as I know. So, can we have a CSS page for us that will have the pseudo elements working properly with the WML? Next thing is, can I have it for templates as well? I want to make some graphs. (Sorry, but I am active on other sister project where I need statistics) So I need jQuery there. Can I have my own script for a) userpage and b) template?
14.139.242.195 (talk) 16:40, 18 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Another attempt then. The pseudo-elements of CSS can be used on a .css page, and they can be restricted to certain pages through the classes of the <body> element provided (e.g. <body class="mediawiki ltr sitedir-ltr ns-3 ns-talk page-User_talk_The_Evil_IP_address skin-vector action-view">) in this case. A script can be restricted to certain pages through the attributes wgNamespace, wgPageName and the like. --The Evil IP address (talk) 12:49, 20 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much . But, can you please do me a favour? Can you tell me where can I find more details about it (on help page) so that I can go deeper before I design the template.

Evolving the heading editor

The heading editor you wrote is brilliant.

Can its power be applied to other uses?

Another item besides a heading that I would love to be able to edit on-the-fly like this is a single list item within a list.

I often find myself looking at a list (either a stand alone list, or an embedded list), and spot an item I would like to change, without having to open the whole page or section in an editor (which requires scrolling to the exact location to make the edit). This would be especially useful in super long lists.

So, I was wondering, could you apply the concept of hdedit.js to doing the same thing for a list item? (li-edit.js)

In HTML, list items start with the tag <li>, and show up on the page preceded by a graphical bullet (dot).

Here are some list items:

  • List item A
  • List item B
  • The whole line is a list item, including the bullet
    • This list item is an offspring of the one before it, the bullet represented in wikicode by two asterisks instead of one.
  • Including the bullet (asterisks) in the editor is important, in case you want to change the level of the list item.
  • This list item has an annotation – and this text is its annotation, which is part of the list item.
  • Clicking on and editing any one of these list items would be a very convenient tool.
  • Imagine a list like this several hundred items long. Finding the line to edit is a tedious and time-consuming step.
  • Or an embedded list in the middle of a long section of prose. Also time-consuming getting to it in an editor.

Being able to edit a particular list item on a page would be incredibly useful. The Transhumanist 04:39, 18 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot for your compliment and for your suggestion, I love it, and that would in fact be useful.
I'll experiment and work on this, as this requires a different technical approach to editing.
Editing the wikitext of the heading sections is comparatively easy to do with the API, with list items it will be different. --The Evil IP address (talk) 10:52, 20 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. I can hardly wait.
Out of curiosity, how is clicking on a list item and opening its text in an edit box different from doing that with a heading? The Transhumanist 16:22, 20 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
On the view page of an article, the script has to work with the existing HTML structure, and make the connection from the HTML of a heading to its underlying wikitext. The section headings all use the class mw-headline in a span element, which contains an id that uniquely identifies the section to be edited in the API.
Example code for a section is <span class="mw-headline" id="References">References</span>
Example for an API call of all the sections of a page here https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=parse&page=Foobar&prop=sections (the anchor matches the id)
This way, the script finds out which section to edit, can then easily retrieve the heading text. Why? Because the heading is uniquely identified by the format == Section title == at the beginning. The same with changing the section title, there's just one place the new text can be inserted into.
Such a functionality does not exist for list items (AFAIK), and as such the mapping of the HTML of a list item to the underlying wiki text is a lot more complicated, and requires a different approach. And that is what I'm now experimenting with and thinking about. --The Evil IP address (talk) 07:58, 21 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure I understand how they are uniquely identified. How does hdedit tell two identical headings apart? Such as if there are two "Other" sections, and you click on the second one? The Transhumanist 07:26, 25 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
These two headings will have the same text, but use different anchors in the API (Example) and the same id in the HTML, as the id attribute has to be unique in HTML. --The Evil IP address (talk) 14:47, 25 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

To make the connection from the HTML of a list item to its underlying wikitext, would counting them help? Or regex? Or a combination of the two? The Transhumanist 07:34, 25 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, somewhat in this direction it goes. Still figuring on the pseudo-code and how to actually do this. Will have to experiment. --The Evil IP address (talk) 14:47, 25 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
find the corresponding section of the wikitext (so the search space is smaller)
figure out the relative positioning (e.g. fifth item of the second list) of this particular list element among all list items of this section via the Document Object Model
find the corresponding list element via regex or other parsing function in the source text

The thing that really baffles me is, how does hdedit know what you clicked on?

Which leads to similar questions for the new program...

How will the new program know that you clicked on a list item, and how will it know which list item you clicked on? The Transhumanist 11:03, 26 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The script uses the onclick functionality offered by browsers (see [1] and particularly [2]).
The last lines of the script
if (mw.config.get('wgNamespaceNumber') >= 0 && mw.config.get('wgAction') == 'view') {
    $('h1 span.mw-headline, h2 span.mw-headline, h3 span.mw-headline, h4 span.mw-headline, h5 span.mw-headline, h6 span.mw-headline').click(
        function () {
            hdedit.onclick($(this));
        }
    );
}
add the function to all the headlines (identified through span.mw-headline). The function then passes the current element ($(this)) to the function that does the actual work of opening up a form. Knowing which element we clicked on is all we need for this. --The Evil IP address (talk) 06:50, 28 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
And this will work for <li> elements too?    The Transhumanist 15:26, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Well, adapting the code I quoted for <li>'s is easy. The actual onclick function is more tricky and needs a different approach. --The Evil IP address (talk) 16:00, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm working on this, my current milestone is that the script has correctly identified the wikitext behind some list items. Here it's a bit more tricky though, as there are many possible ways in which a list item can be used. If you're interested, have a look at my sandbox for how list items can look like on the outside and within the wikitext. --The Evil IP address (talk) 17:19, 8 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This I've got to see. Thanks for the invite. In the meantime, off the top of my head, I have a few questions: Only some list items? Are other list items being missed? Is it mostly a matter of identifying and loading the contents between a given list item's li tags? (Now I'm off to see the sandbox).    The Transhumanist 08:19, 9 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Discussions of design concepts

Showing the asterisks in the edit box

The first thing that caught my eye in your list item sandbox were the multi-bulleted items. In a normal list, that usually indicates there's a typo or extra blank line or something in the list.

Which means usually, that a user will want to fix it. And so, could the list item editor show all the wikitext for the item, including the asterisks, so that the item's level can be adjusted? That way, the user would have access to the entire list item and could delete or add asterisks to it.    The Transhumanist 09:24, 9 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the whole line, including asterisks or HTML tags will be shown. Because one might want to change that (or change HTML to asterisks). --The Evil IP address (talk) 16:46, 13 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Catching improperly displayed list items

The second thing I noticed were the asterisks. List items with a space in front of them, don't display properly. Which means, a user will come along and want to fix it. For the LI editor to pick those up, you will then have a multi-purpose item editor on your hands. Which would be totally awesome. Headings, list items, paragraphs, etc. I think you are onto something here.    The Transhumanist 09:24, 9 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I cannot promise if that's within the scope here, as it's quite challenging technically. Those misformatted lists use pre elements in the wikitext, meaning I'd have to create an own parser figuring out where they are in the wikitext. --The Evil IP address (talk) 16:48, 13 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Getting back to list items themselves...

Many list items, especially on list and outline pages, contain only a link. When you hover over them, the cursor turns to the little hand, and a click takes you to the linked page. How will the user be able to click on those and get the list item editor? By clicking on the area to the left of the link, or on the bullet itself, or either?

(I noticed a link in a heading, and the heading editor starts normally if you click on another part of the heading. I imagine the same thing will apply above. Yes?).    The Transhumanist 09:24, 9 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Clicking on the bullet should always work, as well as clicking on another part of the list item as you said. --The Evil IP address (talk) 16:49, 13 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

What about long list items?

I installed your debug.js to test it out, and the hdedit part seemed to work fine. What is left to be done to get it to load the contents of a list item into an editing box, and what if the list item is long, like this:

Or this:

Will the edit box enlarge to accommodate it (that would be nice), or would there be scrolling involved?

Well, that's all I can think of for now, though I do have some ideas for later, after the list items show up in the editor. (I can hardly wait!)    The Transhumanist 09:24, 9 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This heading is for testing your hdedit.js, so see how it handles really long, I mean super long, headings, that might go beyond the right edge of the screen, or onto the next line

So, it does scroll horizontally. That's good. But it will be awkward in LIedit to edit paragraph-long list items.

What are your thoughts on this?    The Transhumanist 09:30, 9 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thinking in terms of list items, there are a couple things I noticed after clicking on the heading above. First, only part of it was displayed on the screen. It would be nice to be able to read the whole list item without having to scroll. Second, when you do scroll, the save & cancel boxes disappear off the left side of the screen, forcing a scroll back to get to them.

These aren't critical issues initially. As most lists don't have super long list items. But they are things to think about for the future.

I hope my various observations and suggestions help. Sincerely,    The Transhumanist 09:37, 9 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

These suggestions are incredible! Just bear with me as I go through them step by step. --The Evil IP address (talk) 18:01, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Bug report

I found a bug in hdedit.js.

(By the way, I use Firefox Quantum 57.0.3)

When clicking on an empty section's heading, an equals sign appears before the heading in the edit box.

Try clicking on this heading

And this one

This one has no problems

Because it has something in the section.

I hope this has been helpful. The Transhumanist 07:20, 25 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You fixed it. Cool. Works great. The Transhumanist 11:09, 26 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Alpha testing underway...

I noticed your work on li-edit in debug.js.

I can't believe you got it that far. It works!

I am impressed.

I've installed it, and am putting it through the paces. I'll post you my findings, as I find them.

Keep up the good work. When do you think it will be ready for prime time?    The Transhumanist 01:50, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, yes it should work for simple cases. However, just know this is not released in any way, and any edits are on your responsibility. I can't really foresee how long this still takes, as I will have to do testing, fine tuning, and some error handling. --The Evil IP address (talk) 14:18, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Understood.    The Transhumanist 16:43, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The script at User:The Evil IP address/liedit.js is in beta and should work for the typical use case, where asterics create a list. Beta because the weird cases (like people mixing asterics with HTML) aren't yet covered. Please do let me know how it works and when you notice something that shouldn't be. --The Evil IP address (talk) 12:54, 27 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Survey Invite

I'm working on a study of political motivations and how they affect editing. I'd like to ask you to take a survey. The survey should take no more than 1-2 minutes. Your survey responses will be kept private. Our project is documented at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Wikipedia_%2B_Politics.

Survey Link: http://uchicago.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9S3JByWf57fXEkR?Q_DL=56np5HpEZWkMlr7_9S3JByWf57fXEkR_MLRP_6EYiAcOrtir9wWN&Q_CHL=gl

I am asking you to participate in this study because you are a frequent editor of pages on Wikipedia that are of political interest. We would like to learn about your experiences in dealing with editors of different political orientations.

Sincere thanks for your help! Porteclefs (talk) 13:23, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your invitation. I'm not sure if I'm part of the target group here. Most of my edits here are of technical nature, e.g. work on templates or scripts, or fixing spelling and/or typography. To be honest, I'm not contributing article content to Wikipedia (or even to political articles). --The Evil IP address (talk) 16:18, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Adding preferences to hdedit.js

Hey, I liked your hdedit.js script, but one issue I had is that a single click is too easy to do unintentionally, and I personally wanted to change it to a double click. I thought I might not be the only person who wants to customize this, so I forked you and added a very simple preferences system: User:IagoQnsi/hdedit.js. If the user wants to change something about the script, they set a variable window.hdedit_prefs in their common.js file, just before they import your script. Right now the only preference is 'eventToActivate', which you can set to 'click', 'dblclick', and false to change the number of clicks required. But I was thinking it might also be cool to have a preference to add a button next to the title that can be used instead of/in addition to clicking/double-clicking the title. Here's how the preferences currently look in my common.js file:

window.hdedit_prefs = {
    'eventToActivate': 'dblclick'
};
importScript('User:IagoQnsi/hdedit.js');

What do you think of this? Do you like it/would you consider merging something like this into your copy of the script? This is sort of just a proof of concept that I made kind of quickly, so I won't be too hurt if your honesty is brutal lol. (FYI: here's the diff showing everything I changed) Let me know what you think. Thanks, IagoQnsi (talk) 16:45, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks IagoQnsi, I love this suggestion! I haven't considered editing it with a double click as I personally edit pages by double-clicking them (4 eyes...). I'll be adding it to the script.
  • Not sure yet about the button though. It's possible to do, but would require some expansion of the script (adding the button to the DOM, creating onclick handlers). Don't see an added value of it, when which click you prefer does the trick. --The Evil IP address (talk) 16:41, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • I've implemented it with a slightly different coding (and some other changes) now. See if this is how you imagined it! Thanks again :) --The Evil IP address (talk) 11:17, 21 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Perplexed

Since the last time we spoke, I've been preoccupied with the Portals WikiProject.

We are looking for ways to automate portals.

There's a user script I came across that looks like it might be relevant, but I can't figure out what it does or how it works. I installed it, and it did nothing.

Please help us out, and see the thread at: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Portals/General#What does this do?.

Thank you. Sincerely,    — The Transhumanist   23:56, 4 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Question

Is the following statement about JS true?

If you assign a value to a variable that does not exist, it will be created automatically and will have global scope. For user scripts used on Wikipedia, having global scope means it may affect other scripts that are running, as they are technically part of the same program, being called via import from a .js page (.js pages are programs).

I look forward to your reply.    — The Transhumanist   20:15, 29 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Special:WantedTemplates

Hi! Would it be possible for you to add

/* </nowiki> */

to the bottom of User:The Evil IP address/vector.js? You already have the open tag at the top. By putting these tags inside of javascript comments, it won't impact the functionality of your script, but it will keep the backend software from transcluding Template:$1$2. You will know if the tags worked if Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:$1$2 no longer shows your javascript page. By fixing these, we can keep the number of entries in Special:WantedTemplates to a minimum. Thank you in advance for your help! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 23:30, 16 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Done, thank you! But I'm wondering, wouldn't it be ideal if MediaWiki itself would skip parsing the .js and .css files for wanted templates, empty links, and so on? --The Evil IP address (talk) 09:48, 17 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Is your header editing script down?

Thanks for reaching out! The script worked for me in the current and legacy Vector skin and in MinervaNeue. But it indeed didn't work under MonoBook and Timeless. Do you use one of the latter skins? I'll have a look at the cause of the problems in those skins.
If you use one of the Vector skins or MinervaNeue, please share the skin you use and a page where loading didn't work. There might be a recent change I missed or an incompatibility with another script.
