Uran (Marathi: उरण) is part of the Navi Mumbai city township lying in the Raigad district near Panvel and Karjat. It is situated east of Mumbai across the Dharamtar Creek, and is primarily a fishing village, which has developed into a special economy zone. Even famous for its salt pans later after the revolt by the salt pan owners against the decession of govt. has been acquired by the govt. to sea port which has proved now to be main source of income to most of the residents & all near by villages, as major projects & warehouses opened by giving good opportunities to the locals. It has ample industries, namely container terminals like JNPT, DP WORLD (ex P&O), APM terminals (ex GTI) and other shipping companies, GTPS, MSEB (Asia's first power plant run by gas) and ONGC.
Occupation
The main occupation of the people in Uran is fishing.Out of the 80% of the fish production of Mumbai comes from the fisherman of Uran residing in the villages of Karanja and Mora.these people are known as "Koli". Majority of "Koli" people have their surname as "Nakhawa" or "Koli". The second major occupation of the people in Uran is farming. It contributes to the production of Rice in Raigarh district (Raigad is second largest district in production of rice in India). The farming population is called as "Agri". "Agri" and "Koli" are two sub-castes belonging to Hindu religion. The people of these two sub-castes are mainly native to Raigad and Thane districts.
Apart from the Agriculture and Fishery, many people belongs to Service sector working in N.A.D, Grindwell Norton Limited, ONGC, JNPT and many other shipping industries located in Uran.
Problems
Uran has a naval base near Mora Gaon Mora. Locals claim that the base has stifled the growth of the town, due to sea travel restrictions imposed by the Indian Navy.
Besides the naval base, the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) has an Oil and Gas plant nearby. The outskirts of town are largely rural, remaining among the few places within the Navi Mumbai city limits untouched by the modernity of the central city.
This ONGC also bans everyone from visiting the old fort on a hilltop located just besides ONGC plant for security reasons. This Fort has been with Marathas for not a long time and was in possession of Portugal as per the information from locals

B. Peer Sayed Jalaluddin Shah Baba -Mazar just opposite Mukim Shah Baba
C. Hazrat Sayed Rahimuddin Shah Qadri R.A.(Shakker Peer)
D. 30 min walk from Shakar Shah baba is mazaar of Hz. Moinuddin Qadri
1. Dronagiri temple – Karanja – dronagiri goddess.
- The complete panoramic view of Dharamtar Creek from Colaba to Mandva is visible through this hill. Dronagiri mountain view from temple place
2. Ratneshwari temple – Jaskhar – Ratneshwari goddess.
- A huge fair is annually organised, in respect and rejoice for the blessing of goddess Ratneshwari, generally in months of April/May.
3. Vinayak temple – Vinayak locality – Lord Ganesh.
- A very old and beautiful temple retaining the simplicity of the days gone by. This temple has very beautiful surroundings, including a small garden, an old well and a small lake.
4. Mankeshwar temple – Mankeshwar locality – Lord Shiva.
- This very old temple, renovated completely recently, is devoted to Lord Shiva. The temple is located just 5 minutes from the seashore and has a very calming effect on devotees.
5. Shri Dutta Mandir – Devulwadi – Lord Dutta Guru.
- A temple devoted to Lord Dutta is revered and worshiped by many. A huge annual fair is organised on the occasion of Datta Jayanti celebrating the birth of Lord Dutta. This is amongst the largest fairs held in Uran.
6. Saibaba temple – Mora village – Shri Sai Baba.
- A small temple located just rear the Mora boat jetty has a very beautiful idol of Shri Sai Baba.
7. Ragobha Mandir-Kotnaka Village - It is Located in kotnaka village,on the route of Uran- Panvel Highway. A Lord Is Worshiped By Many. Aarti is conducted every Tuesday in the Temple. An annual PALKHI is celebrated with great pleasure, in respect and rejoice for the blessing of Ragobha dev in the Month of April.
Uran has a very beautiful landscape and surroundings. The road to Uran and the roads connecting villages in Uran taluka are lined by greenery, mountains and rice fields in monsoon, which in itself is very beautiful and serene.
A major tourist attraction in Uran is Pirwadi Beach, which is frequented by tourists from nearby areas like Panvel, Navi Mumbai, Mumbai. A distant view of South Mumbai is visible from here.

Geography Uran is located at 18°53′N 72°56′E / 18.88°N 72.94°E.[1] Uran has an average elevation of 21 metres (68 feet). Uran is covered by sea by three side, one extreme side Karanja Village, one side Pirvadi and third there is Mora Village. Uran comprises Chanje, Karanja, Nagaon, Bori, Vinayak, Ambilwadi, Kathechali, Sheva, Dastaan, Jasai villages any many more.
