The Resource Request is where you can request information on a subject or request a specific article, if you lack a source for a Wikipedia article.

Skip to ↓ table of contents ↓   ↓ bottom of page ↓
Fixing references and common medical problems!
Warning: for legal reasons, we must note that the Resource Exchange cannot fix any medical problems. But it can fix references.

Making a request:

  • A request may be an open question for more information on a specific subject, or you may ask for a specific journal article or work which has been cited but you lack the relevant text. Someone may be able to help you.
  • All kinds of sources are possible here: any newspaper or magazine article, searches in a commercial full-text newspaper or journal databases, searches in academic journal databases, encyclopedia articles, court decisions, laws, academic publications or research results, biographies, etc. (but note that requests for full book scans will not be handled)
  • Be aware that you are perfectly entitled to send a message to the [lead] author(s) of scientific research papers to ask for a copy of their paper directly.
  • If you are looking for a book, have you tried to access it from Google Books? (Be aware, however, that many books in Google Books cannot be entirely consulted online, and in many cases just a few pages can be accessed.) Your local library may also be able to acquire it through interlibrary loan.
  • To make a request, you may either contact directly one of the people who have listed themselves below under Direct contact or follow the procedure here for making a general request on this page.
  • To get email replies without disclosing your email address publicly, configure "My preferences, User profile, Email options".
  • Start a new section at the end of the 'New requests' section at the foot of this page and sign with your username (four tildes). Request specific titles, dates, or a combination of search keywords. You also may specify which database or work to search in. Add as much detail as possible as this speeds up the whole process, including as full of a citation as possible instead of just a weblink. Try to provide a DOI for an electronic document or an ISBN for a book.
  • If you are requesting multiple sources, numbering them (1, 2, 3..) can help to keep the subsequent discussion clear.
  • Keep an eye on your request on this page to acknowledge questions and remarks promptly.
  • Once a request has been fulfilled, add a note to that effect to your request so that the work won't be duplicated by others. The {{Resolved}} template is appropriate. The request then will later be moved to the 'Filled requests' section.

Responding to a request

  • Anyone may offer advice and fulfill requests. People whose library provides access to a relevant database or to an extensive (academic) archive, or anyone who has a personal collection of resources is particularly well placed.
  • Edit any questions and replies into the relevant section of this page. Indicate which part or parts of the request you consider you have answered so others do not duplicate your work.
  • Mark the request using {{ping|REQUESTER_USERNAME}} so that the requester is notified.
  • If you decide to transfer an electronic document to the requester this will normally be done either (a) by giving a URL ( http://... ) pointing to a web resource or (b) by email to the requester.
  • (a) Web document. Edit the URL into the relevant section. If the document is not already on a web server you may be able to upload it to one, provided it is legal for you to do so. Be sure to respect copyrights and terms of services of any online services you use. Copyrighted articles from print publications or copies obtained through online databases (e.g. JSTOR) may not be uploaded for unrestricted distribution via open websites.
  • (b) Email, particularly for sending a document as an attachment:
  • If you have configured a Wikipedia email address ("My preferences, User profile, Email options"), edit the relevant section on this page asking the requester to email you using "Email this user" so you may reply to them.
  • Alternatively, and provided the requester has configured a Wikipedia email address, by going to their user page and clicking "Email this user" you can send a text message (but not an attachment) which will give the requester your own email address. In your message ask the requester to reply so you will learn their email address. Edit the relevant section of this page to tell other people what you are doing. Reply to the requester's reply with a second message which includes the relevant attachment.

Filled and stale requests

Requests which have been filled will be archived at the Filled requests subpage .

Requests which have become stale, i.e. remain unfulfilled and have not had any response for a long period of time (three months), may be moved to the Stale requests subpage

Black Sun Press bibliographies

Tanselle (435–6) lists several sources for information on the Black Sun Press. I've found many on the web and bought a few more. These are the remaining ones I haven't been able to track down.

  • Warren, Dale (6 June 1931), "The Black Sun Press", Publishers' Weekly 119: 2714,2716
  • "The Black Sun Press and Caresse Crosby", Daily Mirror (New York), 25 Sep 1933: Sunday Supplement
  • Adomeit, Ruth E. (1961–1962), "The Black Sun Press of Paris", MBC 2: 24–25

pdfs or search tips would be appreciated.

Thanks!

What is MBC? Gamaliel (talk) 23:32, 16 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I wish I could tell you. Tanselle has several pages of abbreviations listed in the front of his book, and unfortunately google elides that particular page. Lesser Cartographies (talk) 17:31, 17 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The only publication I could find with those letters was in Lexis/Nexis and refers to the Middle East Broadcasting Center, which wasn't launched until 1991. Gamaliel (talk) 18:06, 17 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
LC - MBC = Miniature book collector and The Black Sun Press of Paris might be a miniature book at the Lilly Library at Indiana University . -- Jreferee (talk) 13:44, 3 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Jreferee: Interesting. The Black Sun Press was an actual press and did not produce any miniature books, but they did print an issue of The News Letter of the LXIVmos (which deals with miniature books). I really need to get access to Tanselle to see what he intended the abbreviation to me. But thanks for the help! Lesser Cartographies (talk) 15:09, 3 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The Ponca City News archives

I'm working on an article for the Poncan Theatre (sandbox). This page from the theater's website tells me that The Ponca City News has at least one article on the theater from August 7, 1927. I am interested in that one specifically, and any others that are relevant to the theater in their archives. I unfortunately cannot even search them, so I don't know what exists. Thanks in advance. The Library of Congress has a lot of digitized newspapers online, but not apparently this one. Some libraries have this, so you might contact one of them to see if they have an index or digitized copies. The LoC lists some libraries which have it: http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn86064177/holdings/. Gamaliel (talk) 03:54, 13 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Nurse Specialties Median Annual Income

Looking for Nurse Median Annual income by nurse specialty. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lumps all the specialties together. I want to isolate each nurse specialty and report the median annual income for each specialty (i.e. Surgery, Pediatrics, Home Health Care, etc.). I was told that my original source was invalid. Getting scans from Hathi Trust

Hello,

I would like to get scans from Hathi Trust, however downloading whole books is restricted to "Partner institution members". I am specially intersted by all books relalted to Mahatma Gandhi. AFAIK these 13 scans of "Young India" are not available elsewhere. If you have access, please help. If not, please spread the word to find some one who has access. Thanks a lot in advance! Yann (talk) 13:51, 6 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm, Hathitrust has a somewhat restrictive license to those institutions. Is there some reason reading those texts directly from their webpage (vice getting full-volume PDFs) won't suffice? It seems the full text is available that way. LeadSongDog come howl! 15:04, 6 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Several volumes are on http://www.dli.ernet.in/ but you need to use some tricks to download books into a single PDF. Shyamal (talk) 16:16, 6 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@LeadSongDog: The idea is to upload the scans to Commons and to publish the texts in Wikisource. Yann (talk) 14:33, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Browsing the front matter in the online reader, note the copyright claim by the republisher. I don't say it's a legit claim, but that claim is extant. Hathitrust likely will not bother to contest it. LeadSongDog come howl! 15:21, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Warrant canary. Specifically, what are lawyers saying about the concept, whether it has or will be tested in court, whether it will be allowed to work (that is, if sites hosting such canaries will be allowed to remove them if they receive a secret order). I did a dumb search of Lexis/Nexis for the phrase, but I don't know other legal resources to search. Where else to look? --Lexein (talk) 11:30, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

These are pretty new, and I don't think there really is any commentary available yet. I didn't see anything on Westlaw, and this post seems to be the only thing on the Electronic Frontier Foundation's website. Probably the first thing that will be available is law firm memos, but I searched Knowledge Mosaic's database and didn't see anything there either. Thanks! Can you set yourself up a tickler to recheck in a month? I set up a Google alert, but I think you know what a waste of time that is. I should have stated that this is about Warrant canary, and a possibly circular reference discussed at Talk:Warrant canary. Pretty sure I won't remember - you better remind me. You might also want to ask on WP:RD. John M Baker (talk) 01:27, 11 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

American Classic Screen

This one may be a challenge, but the community is awesome, so I am hopeful. American Classic Screen 7 (1): 8 (Jan/Feb 1983). I'm not actually sure the feature / column / article name, or whether it's entirely contained on page 8 or not. Should include commentary by Kevin Brownlow about the restoration of the film recovered from the Lusitania, which I hope to have something to add to The Carpet from Bagdad. No online link available that I know of, even paywalled. Also unhelpfully, although excerpts from American Classic Screen were compiled and reprinted in three book volumes ... this wasn't among them. tricky research for Farah Mohamed Jama Awl

A German website mentions a obituary in

but it doesn't specify the exact date. It would be great to find it, to have a better death date than just the year right now.

has apparently more informations about him, but again I can't say exactly where in the book he is mentioned.

I'd be grateful if anyone can assist me with these requests. --ElRaki (talk) 15:32, 8 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

PS: I'll keep looking here, but please ping my German account, if I'm not answering. ElRaki (talk) 15:35, 8 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Ali Ismail 2010 says on page 240:

Novels written in Somali have burgeoned ever since Farah M. J. Awl (Faarax M.J.Cawl) wrote the first one Agoondarro Waa U Nacob Jacayl (Ignorance is the Enemy of Love), which quickly gained popularity and was translated into English for UNESCO by B. W. Andrezejewski. Farah wrote two or three other novels as well.

— Ali Ismail, Ismail, Governance: The Scourge and Hope of Somalia (Trafford Publishing, 2010), p. 240
I can search the Independent through Factiva, but I'm not finding anything. See this entry though by Martin Orwin which is probably just as good: [7]. --Atethnekos (DiscussionContributions) 20:46, 8 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your research Atethnekos! I can access the Encyclopedia of African Literature in the next few days.
I also tried to dig a bit more into Governance via the scribd site (various search engines with site:scribd.com/doc/63793091/Governance) but it's really just bits and peaces, so I would need some more assistance to make proper sense out if it.
  • See Farah's obituary in the Guardian of May 18 (sounds promising, anyone with access to the Guardian OCLC 60623878?)
  • 1991 244 . if you don't. May. The Independent. see also obituary by Martin Orwin.164 UNESCO gave 164 Faarax and a (maybe page 244?)
  • Farax's wife was seriously injured but was airlifted by an Ethiopian plane to Diredawa where she was treated for a long time and now lives in Liverpool (could be the right Faarax, since some of his family was killed/injured as well when he died)

I sent both, but page 382 in Xiuying appears blank to me. I tried downloading twice from ingentaconnect, but same result. --Atethnekos (DiscussionContributions) 06:44, 10 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
What's really strange is that I also have access to this journal through the ALJC, but for this issue it ends on p. 381! And thirdly I have access through EbscoHost, but it only goes back to Feb. 2003. P. 382 of that issue is the only page of this journal going back to Jan. 2000 which I do not have. --Atethnekos (DiscussionContributions) 07:09, 10 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
? It would be good to wait for other editors to download from other sources. Thank you for your help WhisperToMe (talk) 07:41, 10 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
My French is subpar, but that sentence doesn't read like sensible French to me: She's saying the titles show the objective of the work, which is not "to elaborate a new theory of translation, but to...", but using "pour mettre en ... l'original," to finish the clause just doesn't make sense to me (set the original?), nor would it with the rest of the sentence. Also, note that the next paragraph then starts: "La troisième partie"; well what happened to the second part? I'm guessing the first word on 382 is "avant" (i.e., "put forward" [a thesis]). --Atethnekos (DiscussionContributions) 08:55, 10 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Avicenna in "Arabic alchemy"

Hi, "Georges C. Anawati (1996), "Arabic alchemy", in Roshdi Rashed, ed., Encyclopedia of the History of Arabic Science, Vol. 3, p. 853–885 [875]" is used as a reference twice in the Avicenna article, once to provide a list of four works by Avicenna, once to support the statement: "Among his works on alchemy, Liber Aboali Abincine de Anima in arte Alchemiae was the most influential, having influenced later medieval chemists and alchemists such as Vincent of Beauvais". Please could someone send me the article, or if that's too much, the relevant pages on Avicenna / Ibn Sina. One of the things I'm interested in is whether Avicenna actually wrote the works listed in the Avicenna article, as another Anawati reference I found said Avicenna did not write three of four works attributed to him. Thanks. --Merlinme (talk) 17:30, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sent. I hate it when sources are misrepresented. Anawati on 375–6 is explicit in saying that he agrees with Ruska that De anima is a fake. --Atethnekos (DiscussionContributions) 21:41, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I'm afraid the misrepresentation of the source is not exactly a surprise, this is part of the WP:Requests_for_comment/Jagged_85 cleanup. Still clearing up his mess nearly four years later. --Merlinme (talk) 09:35, 17 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@Merlinme: Thank you for pointing out that case to me. Anecdotally I have noticed such "boosterism"; I guess I'm not the only one. People who take part in such an activity may think they are improving the reputations of their favoured groups, but when their activity is discovered, their groups' reputations are harmed because the groups become associated with this dishonest behaviour. Also, the level of trust about claims on the topic is diminished: If such behaviour were ubiquitous for a topic, then people would simply ignore everything said about the topic, because they wouldn't trust any of it. The topic would become ignored entirely: The exact opposite of what the boosters might hope. And then there is the real harm: The people who have more than a passing interest in the topics start by being misinformed, but then—when they go on to read more on the topic—they become confused due to the conflicting reports, and their whole progress in understanding the topic is retarded. --Atethnekos (DiscussionContributions) 04:34, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@Atethnekos:The Jagged_85 case is in a class of its own. I sincerely hope we never see anything like it again. What made his edits so damaging was that they looked like they were well sourced. A lot of editors don't check references; very few indeed check references which are not available online, and Jagged_85 frequently used hard to check sources with incomplete references. This was made far worse by his prodigious output, at one point he was in the top 100 editors by number of edits. He would copy the same bad material with bad references into a dozen articles. Not only does the boosterism cause confusion and perhaps even a backlash against the exaggeration, it's immensely damaging to Wikipedia's reputation. Wikipedia references are supposed to be how you know an article is well-sourced; if you can't trust what look like good references to scholarly articles, Wikipedia is nearly useless. Some of his mistakes have been used as examples in newspapers to show how unreliable Wikipedia is. I was never quite sure if they were mistakes; at the very least, he made definitive statements about things he didn't understand. Sometimes what he wrote was so ridiculous (Avicenna was the first to describe the lever was one of my favourites) then he must surely have known that he was essentially making it up.
It can take 100 hours work to clean-up even one article, given how time consuming it is to track down all the references. It also requires a fair amount of understanding quite difficult sources. One of his favourite tactics was to use an article that mentions X and Y to say that X invented Y, and you have to understand what the article actually does say before you can correct his edit. I did a philosophy degree and I'm happy skimming scholarly articles to get the required information, but I can understand why few others have the understanding and patience to get involved. The time I have available is fairly limited, although I have a bit more at the moment. If you feel the urge to get involved, I'm sure your help would be much appreciated. --Merlinme (talk) 18:38, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

Thanks very much, going to add them to User:CFCF/Sobotta for use at WP:Anatomy (current volume 2 images are of very low quality) CFCF (talk) 18:31, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Available fullview at v1 v3. It seems that HathiTrust frequently limits distribution. In this case, they seem to be applying the 1873 cutoff to a work which was originally German on v2 as seen outside the US. It might be available through openlibrary in one or other language. Check here. LeadSongDog come howl! 20:38, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the help, but I already have access to those books, and the images have been uploaded to Wikipedia. The reason I am asking for access to volume 2 in particular is because the volume 2 available at openlibrary is not of very high quality. I have also ordered the 1913 volume 1 edition in German so as to add these images, but I have no high-quality edition of the second book. (I have also contacted the HathiTrust, but have not yet received a reply). CFCF (talk) 20:46, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

redirection of an article to another

Resolved

Dear Madam/Sir,

I just tried to redirect the article 'tympanocentesis' to the article 'myringotomy', wich, to my knowledge, are supposed to be completely synonymous. This action was not granted for some reason, so hereby I'd like to make a motion to do it.

Best regards,

Hi Gergely,
This source [33] says that Tympanocentesis is a puncture with a hollow needle, and a Myringotomy a small incision with a knife. So I guess they are considered to be separate procedures. --Atethnekos (DiscussionContributions) 15:55, 22 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Complete text: ON THE LEVEL? As Secretary of the International Flat Earth Society, Samuel Shenton of London holds some rather strong beliefs, viz.: traveling around the world is really like walking around the edge of a plate; beyond the edge is ice, and that's where all those people reported missing have gone; the world has a roof, but it's too high to keep the rain off. Last week Mr. Shenton was angry with the British Broadcasting Corporation, which had invited him to present his views on a television show. .. But time ran out, leaving Mr. Shenton on edge. "It was obvious from the start," he told a reporter, "that the B. B. C. didn't intend to take us seriously. I wasn't allowed to explain our beliefs in detail." Indigenous cultures and languages of Brazil

I desperately need the following source for expanding the article List of extinct indigenous peoples of Brazil. It is a bit large, consisting if 90 pages. Hopper (Ed.), Indians of Brazil in the Twentieth Century (pp. 77–166). Washington D.C.: Institute for cross-cultural research.

There's a copy in my library, which is closed until Thursday. I don't know if I'll be able to scan the whole thing but if you don't have any luck before then I can try to pick out the useful parts. – Arms & Hearts (talk) 18:49, 30 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much for your help. What I want is information regarding Table 5.2 (Should be there in page no.92, Number and Percentage of Known Brazilian Indigenous Groups by Intensity of Contact in 1900 and 1957). I have table 5.2 with me, but I don't have the details. According to the table, out of the 230 tribes which were present in Brazil as of 1900, 87 became extinct, 38 got assimilated, 45 came in to permanent contact... and so on. I want the names of these tribes, and their date of extinction if possible. Once again, thanking you for your help. Yawalapiti (talk) 04:19, 31 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think the information you're looking for is on pages 129–160, which is a list of tribes with names, languages, short descriptions and categorisations using the terms used in that table (isolated, extinct, permanent contact, integrated, etc.). Is that right? If so, email me and I'll reply with a PDF of those pages. – Arms & Hearts (talk) 21:45, 2 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

N.W. Dible - Kansas City Star

Per another editor's suggestion the following section is cut/pasted from Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Humanities#N.W._Dible_-_Kansas_City_Star. I have also included the comments of yet another editor who seems to feel (possibly s\he is right?) this may be a bit of a goose chase. Any expertise on sourcing this subject would be appreciated.

Does anyone have an account to review the Kansas City Star archives? I am looking for any information on Napoleon William Dible and/or his construction firm, N.W. Dible Company which I believe is now called Hickok-Dible. I had a link to an article at the KCS but my link was deleted when the original stub & talk pages were CSD'd with an "A7" code just as I was starting to resume work on it. I also have found the following items so far:

UPDATE: I have been able to identify that this article was published as "THE TUDOR REVIVAL: Old English design found a champion in Kansas City" on pages 10 & 12 of the 31 December 2004 issue of the Kansas City Star. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Formerly6697 (talkcontribs) 10:07, 30 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The "Historic Westheight" and "What's a Dible Tudor?" blog articles are simply abridged versions of the Rockhill Gardens page. The "offline biography" is literally the 1 1/2-page PDF the link goes to, not an actual book; the KC library system maintains a collection of local biography PDFs on their website. I submitted the deletion request, because Dible simply doesn't meet notability guidelines. He owned a home construction company that built the styles of houses that were popular in the US at the time. In 2004, he was posthumously mentioned in the D section of the local paper in relation to his company (which is also non-notable). In 1985, a local neighborhood newsletter wrote an article about him (your other "offline resource"). In 1906, he patented a quack device for regrowing hair. He's not well-known in KC, though I admit my evidence for proving that negative claim is anecdotal: I live there (about 20 blocks away from the Rockhill Gardens area that reprinted the Star article) and I've never heard of him nor the phrase "Dible-built", which sounds far more like advertising than an actual phrase someone would use in conversation. 69.23.116.182 (talk) 04:05, 31 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Echo reduplication in Kannada and the theory of word-formation

Resolved

Hi, I am doing a bit of research about shm-reduplication, and I found in Andrew Nevins and Bert Vaux's article[42] a citation of Echo reduplication in Kannada and the theory of word-formation by Jeffrey Lidz[43], which compares Kannada gi-reduplication with shm-reduplication:

As Lidz (2001) discusses, echo reduplication can apply at various points within a syntactic structure. For example, Kannada gi-reduplication can occur either inside or outside of the case-marker on a noun. Thus, the input [baagil] `door’ can be merged with ECHO and then [[baagil] ECHO] can be merged with the K(ase) morpheme -annu (38a), or [baagil] can be merged with K and then [[baagil] K] can be merged with ECHO (38b). (38) a. baagil-giigil-annu ‘doors-shmoors-acc.’ b. baagil-annu giigil-annu ‘doors-acc-shmoors-acc’

but I am not sure whether Kannada gi-reduplication is derogatory like shm-reduplication. Maybe Lidz's article have the answer. Can any have access to that article help me?--chaoxiandelunzi (talk) 11:19, 3 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

chaoxiandelunzi - A Lidz article with a similar title Lidz (2001) and the Lidz (2006) article you linked to can be accessed at Jeffrey Lidz (1999), "Echo Reduplication in Kannada: Implications for a Theory of Word-formation" (PDF), University of Pennsylvania Working Papers in Linguistics, vol. 6.3, retrieved January 3, 2014. -- Jreferee (talk) 17:02, 3 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Avicenna astronomy sources

Hi, I need to check the following sources for the astronomy section in Avicenna. I've been unable to find any of them doing the standard google and book searches (or using Questia). The sources are:

Any or all you can provide would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. --Merlinme (talk) 13:33, 3 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Are you looking to confirm that the above five sources exist or to confirm the information in the Avicenna article that is sourced to the references? -- Jreferee (talk) 17:18, 3 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
