Revenue stamps of Northern Ireland

Inline references

I saw what you did with the references but the idea about in-line ones is that they are a bit more precise than general sources. So they should usually verify a particular point or fact in the article with a page reference from the book rather than general content. The way we have the Barefoot references now is not wrong, but it is no more helpful than just saying Barefoot was the source for the whole article. Hope my meaning is clear. Keep up the good work. Malta

Nice work on the inline referencing. I removed the 2 column tag until the reference list is longer. You might want to consider using http://www.webcitation.org/ to archive pages included in references in order to prevent link rot. Revenue stamp template

I removed some of the places inside the UK from the template as it is getting too crowded. Unless you are going to create proper separate articles about, for instance, Gloucestershire or Ely, then we don't need to add them to the template which I think should be restricted mainly to separate countries, not sub-divisions of countries like counties. Revenue stamps of the United Kingdom

Please note that Alderney, Jersey, Guernsey and Isle of Man are NOT part of the United Kingdom, even though the Barefoot catalogue includes these places. I removed your content in the above article in that respect. They certainly could have their own articles if you have enough detail. Your contributions in respect of those places is still in the history if you want to create the articles. I note also that the UK article seems to be turning into a list. This project is not a catalogue so there is no need to list every type of revenue ever issued for each country. A general discussion of the main types is more helpful for the general reader. Thanks. Underprints

They were printed on paper which already had the wording (eg CUSTOMS) printed on the paper before the embossed stamp was impressed on top. The term "underprint" is used in Barefoot for these as well.

Hi Xwejnusgozo. I think that the proper way to proceed is to provide reliable sources for your statements. Moreover, the infobox is supposed to summarize the contents of the article. If no sourced mention to such a fact is provided within the body of the article, it's weird to include an unsourced and unmentioned fact in the infobox unless proper sources are provided. Vassallohistory

Hi! Nice work on the auberges! However, I don't think you should be using the vassallohistory site as a source here - as far as I can see, it just copies chunks of stuff from elsewhere on the web, without attribution or references. Hi, I saw that in some cases it was directly copied from another website, eg. Auberge de Bavière and Auberge d'Italie. However for some of the others, eg. Yes, that may be, but is not in itself a justification for using it. The reasons for not using it remain valid. I get a good number of hits in this search and at least one useful one (Mifsud 1907) from this one. I'll add another reference from JSTOR in a minute.

Xwejnusgozo, although you said you thought Drmies's edits were fine, the issues raised had to do with the article as it stood after those edits. These are fixes that need to be made. In particular, the ones raised in the comment I related from Nikkimaria: the incorrect source citing, the need for a copyedit, and a bit of close paraphrasing. I hope you can take care of these soon. If you have trouble finding sources for the batteries, I'll try to help (the National Inventory of Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands is a good start - particularly the list here). By the way, the Vendôme Battery I'm referring to is the one at Armier Bay (35°59′22.3″N 14°21′12.6″E / 35.989528°N 14.353500°E / 35.989528; 14.353500) since other batteries/redoubts (such as Dellija Redoubt) are also sometimes referred to as "Vendôme Battery". @Dr. Blofeld: Thanks :) I'll try to write the article on Pinto Battery sometime this week. I know that the municipality articles need a lot of work (in fact I already tried to improve some of them - Dingli, Mdina, Santa Venera and St. Paul's Bay come to mind). For now I want to focus on the fortifications (there are still a number of articles I intend to create), but when they're done I'll try to improve some of the articles on the municipalities, particularly the larger ones and the cities. In the meantime, I'll try to gather some sources for the Valletta article. It would be nice for it to be a GA, since there are only 4 good articles on WikiProject Malta. If Xwejnusgozo can take the lead, I can help out a bit with Valletta (although I've unfortunately never been there) but I don't want to have too many irons in the fire all at once. My priority for the time being is Jean Sibelius which now seems to be coming along quite well. Once we have managed to get that one up to at least GA, I can begin to spend more time on cities. I seem to remember Dr. Blofeld recently raised the possibility of bringing Copenhagen up to FA. That would certainly be an interesting assignment too. And I have not forgotten our intention to work on four more Danish cities (i.e. Randers, Kolding, Horsens and Vejle) so that Denmark's ten largest cities are all have GA status.--Ipigott (talk) 06:56, 24 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Palazzo Dragonara

Please revert name of Dragonara Palace article to Palazzo Dragonara. Academically it should be referred to its original name and then other names should be added and explained in the article. I wrote this in the first entry paragraph. I will be writing some article on places which start by 'Palazzo' since when being built. We cannot change a name when someone changes the original name. Just in case a new article should be written. Reference to the palace as 'Dragonara palace' started after world war two and the language problem after indipendence. See also Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Malta) and Palazzo Parisio. They have two different articles for a reason. They are at the same site but one is a palace with its history and the other is a ministry which may move over time. They are not the same thing. @Continentaleurope: I moved the article as per WP:COMMONNAME. The palace is usually referred to as "Dragonara Palace" not "Palazzo Dragonara", so the more common name should be used. Similarly, Auberge de Bavière is no longer referred to by its original name "Palazzo Carniero", or Fort St. Angelo is no longer known as the "Castrum Maris", and their Wikipedia articles use their common (but not original) names.
By the way, I'm not saying that all articles on palaces should use palace rather than palazzo (eg. Palazzo Parisio is never referred to as Parisio Palace, so its article should use "Palazzo Parisio" and not "Parisio Palace").
If the name "Palazzo Dragonara" becomes more popular over time, then it is perfectly acceptable to use that name on Wikipedia.

I will see what I can do. I am paying attention to copyright issues when writing. Palazzo parisio in valletta gave me permission to use the site 'wording' but have no idea where to upload the permission. At this stage we dont need it. There is one specific mistake in it. The palace passed to the british first as a post office then to the maltese goverment. Can bring photos of valletta. I uploaded several photos of palaces and houses in Valletta. Note most of the article I suggested are of important interest. Only few buildings are modern with reasons to suggest them. Also I have uploaded pics on Villa Guardamangia and Augerge de Castile]]. @Rathfelder: It would be great if you can write a short summary :) I agree that healthcare in Malta merits its own article; unfortunately I don't know a lot about the topic and I don't think I have any books etc about it. However, in the (probably distant) future I intend to create/expand articles on historic hospitals in Malta. I recently created the articles Palazzo Vilhena and Lazzaretto of Manoel Island which both served as hospitals, so there might be some useful info in these articles which can be added to Healthcare in Malta? Testaferrata Gate

Can you help determine which name is appropriate for Testaferrata Gate. On the time of Malta it is said that the door is known as gzira gate or door and officially named Fawwara Gate, but less reliable sources named it Testaferrata Gate for the family who built it.

  • @Continentaleurope: The gate does not seem to have any official name since it was privately built (unlike the Hompesch Gate etc), and the Times of Malta source is just a letter not an article. I personally prefer Fawwara Gate, but I can't really offer an opinion since I didn't even know that the gate existed prior to reading the article.   • @Philmonte101: I created a short stub in Maltese here, it's a translation of the lead of the English Wikipedia article. I don't really edit the Maltese Wikipedia a lot because an article on the English version is more useful, ie. it would be read by more people than if the article was on the Maltese version. Since practically all Maltese people speak English, when they look up something on the Internet they're also more likely to use English than Maltese. I received permission to photograph the interior of the Castellania in Valletta, the Ministry of Health... . Is there anything you believe I should give prominence to photograph?   • @Continentaleurope: I have never been in the Castellania, so I don't really know what features are worth photographing. It would be good if you are able to take a pic showing the ornate main doorway and top floor (such as this), and one showing more of the facade (such as this). Regarding the interior, if possible I would take photos of the courtyard, chapel and prison cells (which are mentioned in the NICPMI listing), as well as any ornate rooms etc. It would be great if you have access to Temi Zammit's lab, since a photo of that might also be useful in the Themistocles Zammit and Brucellosis articles.   • They agreed on giving me access to the place except for one office. They mentioned the cells in particular when i had contacted the ministry. A person will be there to show me around from 10am to 12:30. I have been told that there is poor light and my tablet is not any better either. I got no professional camera. I will do my best. National Museum of Fine Arts, Malta

The article of the National Museum of Fine Arts, Malta needs to be updated. A seperate article for the Admiralty house needs to be written. The museum will move very soon and much of the info about the location will be outdated. I will write an article about the palace when I have time. There must be an article of the museum (collection) and on the palace (present location). The museum must move either late this year or the next. The Auberge d'Italie is currently being restored to accommodate the museum permamently. Stamp Paper of Pakistan

Hi, I was hoping you could help me with a question related to stamp paper of British India/Pakistan. Do you know the reasons behind why the paper has such intricate designs?   • @Rzafar: I guess security issues would have been a major factor in the designs of stamped paper (a simple design would obviously be much easier to forge). However, until the mid-20th-century, many other types of documents (eg. cheques, invoices etc) also had similar engraved designs, so it might have just been the trend of the time to use an intricate design. I have some confusion. The article of Briconet Redoubt shows your scatch about Briconet Redoubt but according to what I noticed it does not include Casa Monita (the pics that I just uploaded). This place is fortified and is not originally built to be a residence. Can you check what I did wrong and can you tell me something about the pics ai uploaded there.   • @Continentaleurope: Briconet Redoubt is the pentagonal building with the blockhouse in the centre, ie. the former police station, as shown in this photo. I had never heard of Casa Monita until now; is it the building found between the redoubt and the church? I had a quick look on the internet, and couldn't find anything about Casa Monita. Could it have been a private building (farmhouse?) which was lightly fortified so as to protect the inhabitants from attacks?

  • It is the building between the redoubt and church yes. The old part is just the wall and the shooting boxes i photographed. The wall is similar to a redan butntall. The living quarters are not old. One of the sources you habe used for the article says that a redan was built but not clear which. The name Casa Monita is quite new in my belief as this fortified building was for sure not a house in its origin. Apparently the redoubt was a police station in operation long ago but remains in hands of the police. The police station there has moved two times. It is currently in two containers in the playing field next to church. The place is open and accessible through a window but I did not went it because of transpassing or similar. From what I saw it is abondoned and vandalised. The photos I uploaded should be removed from article if they remain unclear. The only one that should remain is the main one.   • @Continentaleurope: I think the term redan is used erroneously on the Marsaskala Local Council website - probably it refers to the boundary walls on the redoubt's gorge and flanks. Regarding Casa Monita, the only explanation I can think of is that the building might incorporate part of a coastal entrenchment. However, I can't find a source to support this, and it is just speculation on my part. For now, I removed the pictures of Casa Monita from the redoubt article, but I included one of the images in the Marsaskala article. Wikimedia Community Malta

I knew of two towers in Marsaskala which still don't have Wikipedia articles: Tal-Buttar Tower (located at 35°51′34.5″N 14°33′36.1″E / 35.859583°N 14.560028°E / 35.859583; 14.560028, more info here) and Tal-Gardiel Tower (located at 35°51′28.8″N 14°33′47.8″E / 35.858000°N 14.563278°E / 35.858000; 14.563278). However, the one in your picture is located at 35°51′22.1″N 14°32′50.3″E / 35.856139°N 14.547306°E / 35.856139; 14.547306 in the area of Ħal Tmiem, far from either Tal-Buttar or Tal-Gardiel towers. The 1987 book Bliet u Rħula Maltin does mention several other towers in Marsaskala (although it does not include Tal-Buttar or Tal-Gardiel, perhaps they're known by other names), but it does not illustrate/describe them well so I can't tell which one this is. Windmills

The article List of windmills in Malta have some mistakes such as the first windmill that links says is in Gozo and the fourth that should be replaced in alphabetical order. I uploaded some pics there. It appears that there are other msitakes such as some are reported as demolished but are not according tomoics and links (such as one in Gozo secrion). Corradino Lines

Not sure if you noticed. I uploaded some pics on the Corradino Lines article. Pls arrange pics and remove those you do not think are appropriate. Is there anyhing there you wish me to photograph as well? Currently the ditch is occupied by the cleaning services who gently allowed me entry. Best side is partially visible from outside. There is like a battery and on the inner side there is a tennis court or sports... . It is planned to be used a a recreational park. The Marina fountain, as part of the Wignacourt aqueduct, still exists. I tried to see whether the source you have used made any sense but it was either a misinterpretation by the sources's author or a typo/mistake. I have made some changes and uploaded pics of the fountain, but one or two pics should be removed because there is a cluster of pics now. Since 17 May till 20 June (more than a month) the Royal Opera House in Valletta 'belonged' to a certain Kyle Schembri. This was certainly a type of vandalism. Mount of Piety

Tomorrow I am visiting the Mount of Pieta in Valletta. Is there anthing there that you may know is interesting to photograph? I am given permission to photograph some parts of the building. By the way, I have several photographs of Valletta. Rest assured that in respect to you I would go and photograph any building in Valletta. I was given access to photograph some interiors as well. The DOI informed me that wikipedia can use their photos, similar to the USA system. All you need to do is give credit to the photographer and DOI, or just DOI if name is missing. Photos belonging to the DOI can be used anywhere but in the information of the photo should include that belongs to them. You do not need to include the reference in the articles but only in the photo information. The photos of DOI are important for Prime Ministers and Presents of Malta. @Continentaleurope: I never visited the Monte di Pietà (I only saw the building from the outside) so I cannot comment on what might be interesting to photograph. When the building was given to Giuseppe Cohen in 1749, a plaque (somewhat similar to this one at the Castellania) was installed at the building. This is no longer there (perhaps it was removed in 1773?), but I've seen pictures of it in books so it probably still exists. I don't know if it is somewhere inside the building, or in some museum or private collection, but if you come across it, please take a picture since it would be useful. You're doing a great job with the photos, and keep up the good work. Regarding other buildings in Valletta, I can't think of any others which still need a picture (except for the housing estates instead of the Slaves' Prison, but that's not a priority).
By the way, sorry for not responding for your earlier messages on my talk page since I was busy with exams. Regarding the Wignacourt fountain, I did not know that it still existed, I had just assumed that it was destroyed over time. I intend to rewrite parts of the Wignacourt Aqueduct article (and perhaps nominate it to Good article status), so I will address these issues. You will have them by tomorrow. Block of flats, Floriana water tower, and search for plaque. There are still original windows at the mount of piety that are used to serve clients, a nice central courtyard, some restored parts, other parts are undergoing restoration, some parts are offices and nothing interesting. There are still several houses in Valletta that require an article. I have a photograph of them but will keep until an article pop up. Note that some townhouses are called Palazzo but they are not palaces. TBH I was writing an article about the Admiralty House. I added sources that give you further knowledge about the palace. It was originally known as Palazzo Sousa y Silva after the first resident, was known as Miari after the last resident before the French and last knight to occupy it and Admiraly...however the source i gave you clearly states other names.. It changed name every time a new lease was comtracted. The coat of arms were defaced during the french. The architecture is rococo but similar to baroque. However Belli was famous for his baroque staircase part 1. The palace is mention in part2. Some chnages will be taking place ([1]). Hostel de Verdelin

I am sure that the Hostel de Verdelin was built in the 1650s since in 1662 the premises were already transferred to his brother Paul and in 1666 was elected/chosen. The 1662 and 1666 and 1660s are all mistakes by the tourist guides and unprofessional reasearch. The academia source is most correct. I believe the other date should be put in a note and not in the main text. Clearly should state the claims of the dates and what actually happened on those dates. Castellania

I posted some comments on the talk page and only did some edits on the main page of Castellania. I have some photos from different views of the statues of lady justice if you want. Try to address my minor comments. It is already a GA status according to me but my comments if addressed can make it a better articles. I managed to understand how to archive a source but it took me some time to do so. Do you need more photos of Valletta apart from the house near Castille? I uploaded several pics recently. @Continentaleurope: I read your comments on the talk page, if I have time I'll add more info to the article tomorrow. Regarding Valletta, I can't think of anything else for the moment (except for Auberge d'Italie when restoration is fully complete with bust back in place etc - but I don't think it's finished yet), but if you find an interesting building or a coat of arms etc which still doesn't have any photos on Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons, I would take a picture. If you have photos of the Hal Millieri and Hal Safi Roman villas, you can upload them even though for the time being I'm not planning to write an article about them (until now I wasn't aware of Roman remains in those areas) as they can be useful in the future. Castellania

According to the book Bliet u Rhula Maltin, the Castellania was built by 1748 (as also written on the inscription in latin). It also says that works continued and mentioned the date of the architect in 1756 and end of works in 1760. Maybe it started ro function but other works were going on. It says that the chapel stopped functioning since 1855. It says those condemed to death were taken to the chapel for prayers and then followed by a procession till Floriana where they are executed (or close to city gate?). The procession was with the Brotherhood (priests or prayer groups?) walking in front and the executer a the the back of the condemned (omit this part as I am only explainign context). It also says that is was The Gas Office (l-Ufficju Tal-Gass) after it the courts were moved (another source I read said that the entrance was where back then was the entrance and exit of the prison, on the side). It was the gas office simaltanously when used by a tenant and a school. The school was projected by director Paolo Pullicino and opened to the public in April 1856 during the government of William Reid with a monthly payment of 5 'xelini' and a yearly rent of £100. The gvernment paid for the sallaries of the teachers. It further described the interior statues of Justice with the scales. The Gas office was still there until the book was written (2005?). One of the Architects is Bonnici or Bonici? book says Bonnici but not an issue. If by any chance you wish to give me your email I can sent you the full text but it is up to you. It would be interesting to add this info but if done do it before the GA study starts or after. I thought you should know this info since it would be better to make things clear specifically the dates since I wish wikipedia remains reliable as much as possible.

@Continentaleurope: The date on the inscription is "MDCCLVIII", meaning 1758 (maybe the building opened in that year but was fully completed in 1760?). I added a note stating that some sources claim that construction began in 1748. I changed the date when the chapel was deconsecrated to "19th century" to avoid the contradictory claims that it stopped functioning in 1855 or 1888. The surname of the architect Giuseppe Bonici is sometimes incorrectly written as "Bonnici", but reliable sources generally use "Bonici". Feel free to add some info about the Gas Office etc. Regarding Santa Cecilia Chapel, the pics you uploaded here and on Wikimedia Commons are already good enough, but if you have more it can't hurt to upload them if you wish. Notre Dame Gate

The Notre Dame Gate at Birgu was designed by Romano Carapecchia and there is no doubt about that; the walls or lines of Cottonera were likely designed by Mederico who was a military engineer or likely so. Carapecchia's designs are recognisable to some extent and they are most of them found in London. When Mederico is attributed with a Baroque or very decorated façade do doubt it. Times of Malta

Lots of work went to trash. It is useless that we have been archiving articles of the Times of Malta since now they inserted robot.txt and this will not allow you to see the previously archived sources, nor archive others. Hence the Times is less reliable in the long run but they are likely to archive their own articles themselves on the website. What ever is the case, the newspaper's articles lost their value for research and instant verification. You can verify that they did this here. @Continentaleurope: It's very annoying that they inserted robots.txt. The archived pages should be re-archived using a website which also archives pages with robots.txt, such as WebCite. This site still works with the Times of Malta, for example I archived this page just now. Unfortunately it takes longer for pages to be archived on WebCite than on the Wayback Machine, and it would require an enormous effort to re-archive every source. Allow me to suggest that perhaps you should archive their sources without showing it on reference. Perhaps just write "access date" and then archive any source anywhere possible. The access date would be enough to know when the source, approximately, was archived even without stating the archive source. I have observed that a number of editors do this on other major articles.

A HUGE backlog

We now have 821 New Page Reviewers!
Most of us requested the user right at PERM, expressing a wish to be able to do something about the huge backlog, but the chart on the right does not demonstrate any changes to the pre-user-right levels of October.

Hitting 17,000 soon

The backlog is still steadily growing at a rate of 150 a day or 4,650 a month. Only 20 reviews a day by each reviewer over the next few days would bring the backlog down to a managable level and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
It didn't work in time to relax for the Xmas/New Year holidays. Let's see if we can achieve our goal before Easter, otherwise by Thanksgiving it will be closer to 70,000.

Remember that we are the only guardians of quality of new articles, we alone have to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged by non-Reviewer patrollers and that new authors are not being bitten.

Abuse

This is even more important and extra vigilance is required considering Orangemoody, and

  1. this very recent case of paid advertising by a Reviewer resulting in a community ban.
  2. this case in January of paid advertising by a Reviewer, also resulting in a community ban.
  3. This Reviewer is indefinitely blocked for sockpuppetry.

Coordinator election

Kudpung is stepping down after 6 years as unofficial coordinator of New Page Patrolling/Reviewing. There is enough work for two people and two coords are now required. Details are at NPR Coordinators; nominate someone or nominate yourself. Date for the actual suffrage will be published later.

Fortifications help

Hi Xwejnusgozo, you've done excellent work on the fortifications of Malta and was hoping you might help me. How would you classify the fortification at the bottom of the photo on the right? It's some kind of causeway extending from the wall, behind which stands a gate (below and to the right of the photographer). It's from Acre, so Ottoman, probably late 18th century. Thank you.

@Poliocretes: Although I am very interested in the subject, I'm far from an expert on fortifications. I've never seen a fortification similar to the one in your photo, and I still didn't understand exactly what it is. It might be similar to a barbican, but I'm not sure. You can try looking it up in Stephen C. Spiteri's Illustrated Glossary of Terms used in Military Architecture which is available online here, although that resource seems to focus more on European fortifications rather than Ottoman. Have you tried searching about the walls of Acre, perhaps there is some info or a map which describes this feature? I'll get back to you if I find any information about this. Both structures are quite similar and seem to date from roughly the same era, and the St. Angelo barbican protects a ramp leading from the fort's main gate, while the Acre structure is protecting a gate. I'm still not 100% sure, but it does seem to fit in Spiteri's definition as "an outer work defending the gate of a castle or citadel, frequently a fortified gate house." Triton Fountain

I will upload some other photos of the dismantling of the fountain. However I am finding difficulty to upload photos one by one. Is there another way to upload a group of photos together when it is the same subject? @Continentaleurope: Have you tried using the UploadWizard? Although I haven't uploaded anything for quite a while now, if I recall correctly it should allow you to upload multiple files at once. @Xwejnusgozo: Thanks for the information. It is allowing me to upload about 20 pics at a time. You will need to name the first one and then gives you an option to regenerate the name and adding a different number at the end.
