From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Stanning (talk | contribs) at 14:55, 1 September 2018 (Non-resident heads of mission: Code). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Heads of British diplomatic missions are usually ambassadors, except in member countries of the Commonwealth of Nations where the head of mission is a high commissioner. The head of mission to an international organisation is usually a permanent representative.

The Ambassador of the United Kingdom to the Dominican Republic is the United Kingdom's foremost diplomatic representative to the Dominican Republic.

From 1999 to 2015 the holder was also ambassador to the Republic of Haiti.[2] In June 2012 the British Foreign Secretary announced that the UK was to open a new embassy in Haiti.[3] In 2015 Sharon Isabel Campbell was appointed as dedicated ambassador to Haiti, but still to be non-resident, since she is married to the ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Christopher John Campbell.[4] In 2019, Mockbul Ali was appointed as both Ambassador to the Dominican Republic and non-resident Ambassador to Haiti and is the first British ethnic minority to hold the role.[5]

The high commissioner of the United Kingdom to Kenya is the United Kingdom's foremost diplomatic representative in the Republic of Kenya, and in charge of the UK's diplomatic mission in Kenya.

As fellow members of the Commonwealth of Nations, the United Kingdom and Kenya conduct their diplomatic relations at governmental level, rather than between heads of state. Therefore, the countries exchange high commissioners rather than ambassadors.

The Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Mongolia is the United Kingdom's foremost diplomatic representative in Mongolia, and head of the UK's diplomatic mission there. The official title is His Britannic Majesty's Ambassador to Mongolia.

Britain was the first Western country to recognise an independent Mongolia when diplomatic relations were established in January 1963 with appointment of the British Chargé d'Affaires in Peking, Mr Terence Garvey, to Ulaanbaatar as non-resident Ambassador. In 1964 Mr (later Sir) Reginald Hibbert became resident Chargé d'Affaires in Ulaanbaatar. He was succeeded by Mr Heath Mason, who was appointed as the first resident British Ambassador in 1966. In 1968 the Embassy moved to a new building on Peace Avenue where it is still located today.[1]

The Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to the Republic of the Philippines (Filipino: Sugo ng Reyno Unido ng Dakilang Britanya at Hilagang Irlanda sa Republika ng Pilipinas) is the United Kingdom's foremost diplomatic representative in the Republic of the Philippines, and head of the UK's diplomatic mission there. The official title is His Britannic Majesty's Ambassador to the Republic of the Philippines.

The British ambassador to the Philippines is also accredited as a non-resident ambassador to the Republic of Palau. There is no British embassy or consulate in Palau.[3]

The following is a chronological list of British heads of mission (ministers and ambassadors) in the Philippines from 1844. Before the country's independence in 1946, there were no ambassadors exchanged between the two countries, the highest rank being envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary – a rank just below ambassador as well as consuls-general based in Manila. The rank of ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary was later officially elevated in 1954.

Non-resident heads of mission

The United Kingdom does not maintain a full embassy or High Commission in a number of countries. In each of these cases the head of mission to another country, usually a neighbouring one, is also accredited to the other country (except, at present, for the ambassadors to Haiti and Honduras, who are dedicated but non-resident). In most cases a smaller, local mission provides for emergencies, and is headed by a lesser diplomat or a member of the local British community.
