  • Two elements of CSD G6 have been split into their own criteria: R4 for redirects in the "File:" namespace with the same name as a file or redirect at Wikimedia Commons (Discussion), and G14 for disambiguation pages which disambiguate zero pages, or have "(disambiguation)" in the title but disambiguate a single page (Discussion).
  • {{db-blankdraft}} was merged into G13 (Discussion)
  • A discussion recently closed with no consensus on whether to create a subject-specific notability guideline for theatrical plays.
  • There is an ongoing discussion on a proposal to create subject-specific notability guidelines for chemicals and organism taxa.
Reminders
  • NPR is not a binary keep / delete process. In many cases a redirect may be appropriate. The deletion policy and its associated guideline clearly emphasise that not all unsuitable articles must be deleted. Redirects are not contentious. See a classic example of the templates to use. More templates are listed at the R template index. Reviewers who are not aware, do please take this into consideration before PROD, CSD, and especially AfD because not even all admins are aware of such policies, and many NAC do not have a full knowledge of them.
NPP Tools Report
  • Superlinks – allows you to check an article's history, logs, talk page, NPP flowchart (on unpatrolled pages) and more without navigating away from the article itself.
  • copyvio-check – automatically checks the copyvio percentage of new pages in the background and displays this info with a link to the report in the 'info' panel of the Page curation toolbar.
  • The NPP flowchart now has clickable hyperlinks.

Thanks, I became aware of Evad's closer during his recent RfA, but I have a long-standing aversion to using any automated tools -- especially around deletion discussions -- to force me to slow down and contemplate my actions. Hi DannyS712, thanks again for closing two more RfCs at the reliable sources noticeboard. For the National Enquirer RfC, would you mind changing the word depreciate to deprecate, which is the term currently being used at Wikipedia:Deprecated sources and the perennial sources list? Leonardo da Vinci's birth date issue"

Reliable source is the certified Wikipedia article itself, it is clearly mentioned in the first sentence of his biography that the date is "OLD STYLE" which is the Julian Calender. Changes later this week

  • When you use rollback you will be able to get a confirmation prompt on most wikis. It asks you if you wanted to do the rollback. This is to avoid misclicks. You will have to opt in to get it. On German Wikipedia it will be an opt-out feature from 28 March. [1][2]
  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 19 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 20 March. It will be on all wikis from 21 March (calendar).

Meetings

  • Recurrent item Advanced item You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 20 March at 16:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Future changes

  • Admins will be able to block someone from editing a page or a namespace. This already works on a few Wikimedia wikis. You can read more. If your wiki wants to be an early tester of this, you can tell the developers. [3]
  • Advanced item Toolforge will shut down the Ubuntu Trusty job grid. This will happen the week of 25 March. Tools that use this grid needs to be moved to the new Debian Stretch job grid. If they haven't, they will be taken offline. Maintainers can restart the tools later. Users may not be able to use them in the meanwhile. You can see a list of affected tools.

Help with script for Galician wiki

Hi DannyS712, I'm happy that you could help us. The idea is that when a user patrolling articles finds a short article, he needs to add the template to the article, "curto de máis", and it could be useful that this action sends an automatic message to the user who created the article warning him about that issue in it's article. I thought that this could be implemented adding a new menu option to the tool's box of user, but other implementations could work fine too. Bye, Elisardojm (talk) 00:59, 19 March 2019 (UTC)

I have tested it and works well, but I noticed an issue. The message added to the user is saved at his user page, and it should be at his talk page. You can view it here.

Looks great! The comments: The edit summary at the article the tool saves "Tag - Galician (v 1.7)", it could be changed to "Marcado como curto de máis usando link_to_help_page_of_the_tool (Galician v 1.7)". The edit summary at the user page edition the tool saves "Note about Name_of_page, a page you created - Galician (v 1.7)", it could be changed to "Aviso de artigo curto de máis en Name_of_page, usando link_to_help_page_of_the_tool (Galician v 1.7)". Another change should be the name of tab, "galician" should be changed to something like "A. Curto" or other name for the tool. And what will be the name for the tool?   1. There is a "help page" link in each edit summary - what page would you like it to link to, and what text would you like displayed
  2. What is the name of the page you will put the script's code in (the local definition of the script)? This should be in the MediaWiki namespace, and will only be editable by interface administrators
  3. There is a separate "configurations" page for the settings - what is the name of the page you would like to use? (I recommend it be in the MediaWiki namespace, so that only administrators can edit it)
  4. What description would you like to have in the gadgets menu for this tool?
  5. Would you like me to help install it on your wiki, or would you like to do so yourself?

  1. The help page could be at gl.wiki at Wikipedia:Marcador de artigos curtos, I will explain there how to install and use the tool
  2. The script's code could be at MediaWiki:Gadget-Marcadorcurtos.js
  3. The config file could be at MediaWiki:Gadget-Marcadorcurtos.json
  4. The description could be "Marcador de artigos curtos: Engade unha nova lapela para inserir o marcador "Curto de máis" e avisa automaticamente ó creador do artigo".

@Elisardojm: the steps are, I believe:

  1. Create the help page
  2. Create MediaWiki:Gadget-Marcadorcurtos.json with a copy of https://en.wikipedia.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Gadget-tag.json
  3. Create MediaWiki:Gadget-Marcadorcurtos.js with a copy of https://en.wikipedia.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Gadget-tag.js (no need to change anything, but for now it doesn't work on the beta cluster because I already changed it for your wiki
  4. Go to MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition, and add Marcadorcurtos[ResourceLoader|dependencies=mediawiki.util]|Marcadorcurtos.js
  5. Go to MediaWiki:Gadget-Marcadorcurtos and add the description you gave in step 4

This should work, but I haven't tested it (obviously). I suggest creating the help page first so that it shows up as a blue link from the start - it takes a while for the script to realize :(. Hi, I had made the changes and I tested it at [8], it worked fine, I only detected a little issue, in the edit summary there is a link to User:DannyS712/Tag.js, I think that it could be changed to "Wikipedia:Marcador de artigos curtos", and delete the repeated link... @Elisardojm: the "tag" is used so that it links to the script itself (the page on enwiki, where I will store the script) and so I would like to keep the link. March GOCE newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors March 2019 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the March newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since December 2018. All being well, we're planning to issue these quarterly in 2019, balancing the need to communicate widely with the avoidance of filling up talk pages. Don't forget you can unsubscribe at any time; see below.

January Drive: Thanks to everyone for the splendid work in January's Backlog Elimination Drive. We removed copyedit tags from all of the articles tagged in our original target months of June, July and August 2018, and by 24 January we ran out of articles. After adding September, we finished the month with 8 target articles remaining and 842 left in the backlog. GOCE copyeditors also completed 48 requests for copyedit in January. Of the 31 people who signed up for this drive, 24 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Blitz: Thanks to everyone who participated in the February Blitz. Of the 15 people who signed up, 13 copyedited at least one article. Participants claimed 32 copyedits, including 15 requests. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: As of 23:39, 18 March 2019 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors have completed 108 requests since 1 January and the backlog stands at 851 articles.

March Drive: The month-long March drive is now underway; the target months are October and November 2018. Awards will be given to everyone who copyedits at least one article from the backlog. Sign up here!

Election reminder: It may only be March but don't forget our mid-year Election of Coordinators opens for nominations on 1 June. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

Slow down please

Hi DannyS712, you are overloading Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval. I've removed your last 2 requests from the process list (Tasks 23 and 24). You already have 4 tasks in active trials, and mentioned you don't have time to work on. We don't have a "hard limit" at BRFA, but you've got too many active requests in general. Please work though the tasks you have in flight before asking for more reviews. That being said, if you have ideas for more tasks, feel free to write up your subpages but hold off on adding them in. A good rule of thumb would be to limit to 3 or 4 active BRFA's at once (note: I've left eight running), I really don't want go down the "rule making" process on this. If you would like to withdraw tasks that you have started but aren't going to work on, that is also OK to make room for the things you have time for. Edits like this and this are the typical edits that need to be done from a bot account. As I watch many of the pages, it's quite intrusive. @Serial Number 54129: I am familiar with the bot policy in general, and also with MEATBOT, which states: Human editors are expected to pay attention to the edits they make, and ensure that they do not sacrifice quality in the pursuit of speed or quantity. For the purpose of dispute resolution, it is irrelevant whether high-speed or large-scale edits that are contrary to consensus or cause errors an attentive human would not make are actually being performed by a bot, by a human assisted by a script, or even by a human without any programmatic assistance. No matter the method, the disruptive editing must stop or the user may end up blocked.
Note that merely editing quickly, particularly for a short time, is not by itself disruptive.
I do not believe that I have sacrificed quality in the pursuit of speed or quality, nor made high-speed or large-scale edits that are contrary to consensus or cause errors. That being said, I understand Ammarpad's point about watchlists, and will act accordingly when conducting such large-scale edits. --DannyS712 (talk) 21:20, 23 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi. Well, actually I wouldn't use that oldid thing much. I do copy paste perm link to paste into the edit summary when I copy paste content verbatim from one article to another. NAC, CfD closings

Hello, DannyS712,

I was surprised to see in your contributions that you removed a category from many pages in response to closing a CfD. Are you familiar with NAC closings in CfD? Have you looked over Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Administrator instructions particularly the use of the Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Working page? Because you shouldn't be doing manual changes in response to closing a CfD and typically, NAC closures are only for no consensus or keep decisions and not for decisions that are complicated by previous CfD decisions. @Liz: I am intimately familiar with the procedure for closing CfDs, and having been working to successfully do NACs for all types of CfD closes (see Wikipedia talk:Categories for discussion#Backlog). The admin instructions say If you are an administrator, list it under the appropriate section of Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Working. Include the link to the CFD day page above the listing. (If you are a non-admin, you will not be able to use the /Working page as it is protected, so do not close discussions that require any of the above 3 actions unless you are prepared to implement them manually, or an admin has agreed to help you. To request deletion of a category manually emptied by a non-admin, tag the page with {{db-xfd}}, e.g. {{db-xfd}}.) Recent changes

  • The new version of the content translation tool will be used for all new translations. The older version will still be used for translations that were started with it. Most users won’t see any change. More than 80% of the published translations are already using the new version. [10]

Problems

  • There was a problem with editing with Safari on iOS. When you wrote an edit summary you couldn't save the edit. This has now been fixed. [11]
  • The editing toolbar sometimes disappears when you scroll on iOS devices. This will be fixed soon. [12]
  • Wikis can over-ride interface messages on-wiki. A problem meant that sometimes an old versions of any changed messages were shown instead. This included the sitenotice and other important parts of the interface. This was fixed at around 2019-03-22 16:00 (UTC). Logged-out users may still get the wrong message. Purging the page should fix it for them. [13]

  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 26 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 27 March. It will be on all wikis from 28 March (calendar).

When in the cloud, do as the APIs do

Half a century ago, it was the era of the mainframe computer, with its air-conditioned room, twitching tape-drives, and appearance in the title of a spy novel Billion-Dollar Brain then made into a Hollywood film. Now we have the cloud, with server farms and the client–server model as quotidian: this text is being typed on a Chromebook.

The term Applications Programming Interface or API is 50 years old, and refers to a type of software library as well as the interface to its use. While a compiler is what you need to get high-level code executed by a mainframe, an API out in the cloud somewhere offers a chance to perform operations on a remote server. For example, the multifarious bots active on Wikipedia have owners who exploit the MediaWiki API.

APIs (called RESTful) that allow for the GET HTTP request are fundamental for what could colloquially be called "moving data around the Web"; from which Wikidata benefits 24/7. So the fact that the Wikidata SPARQL endpoint at query.wikidata.org has a RESTful API means that, in lay terms, Wikidata content can be GOT from it. The programming involved, besides the SPARQL language, could be in Python, younger by a few months than the Web.

Magic words, such as occur in fantasy stories, are wishful (rather than RESTful) solutions to gaining access. You may need to be a linguist to enter Ali Baba's cave or the western door of Moria (French in the case of "Open Sesame", in fact, and Sindarin being the respective languages). Talking to an API requires a bigger toolkit, which first means you have to recognise the tools in terms of what they can do. On the way to the wikt:impactful or polymathic modern handling of facts, one must perhaps take only tactful notice of tech's endemic problem with documentation, and absorb the insightful point that the code in APIs does articulate the customary procedures now in place on the cloud for getting information. As Owl explained to Winnie-the-Pooh, it tells you The Thing to Do.

Responding to Damon J. Smith Articles for Deletion Page

Hi Danny S712, I would like to know why you think the page I created and have maintained for many years Damon J. Smith should be deleted? I undid another user's request to delete because I suspect he is attempting to vandalize my work. He is a new user with no prior contribs, and he only just created the account after another user who had previously attempted to delete the page mysteriously disappeared. This user accused me of being an alias of Damon J. Smith, which is untrue. I would be happy to Skype just to verify my identity! I have maintained the Damon J. Smith page on Wikipedia for many years and have spent a lot of effort compiling media references as I've followed his career. I'm sure we can find quite a few less deserving biographies on Wikipedia to clean up. Why is mine such a target now? I appreciate everyone's efforts to maintain the integrity of Wikipedia, and I am happy to make revisions to the page if there are unwarranted entries, but deleting the page is quite a draconian measure. @Taryndejesus: I reverted your edit because the AfD notice must remain on the page until the AfD is over. I take no position on if it should be deleted or not. While yes, that user hasn't edited other page, that doesn't allow you to remove the notice. At the start of this month, they tagged the page for deletion, and no one objected within a week, so it was deleted. After you requested that it be restored, they then created a discussion about if it should be deleted. You should participate in the discussion, but shouldn't remove the AfD notice. DannyS712 Thank you for your prompt response. OK so that makes sense, I misunderstood the process. So how long does AfD take? It wasn't very clear where the discussion takes place or when it considered complete. I did not see that the page was tagged for deletion at the beginning of the month (for some reason I did not receive notification), so I didn't find out anything was wrong until I happened to log in the other day and found it was deleted. I'd never had that happen before, so I wasn't sure how to join the discussion. But just now I edited the discussion page and posted a comment - hopefully I did that properly - and hopefully this will be remedied soon. Regarding this. I'm really not sure what that thread is about any more, but ignoring it does seem the most constructive general strategy. I just felt it prudent to inject a link to WP:MEATBOT since proponents of large scale semi-automated editing professed ignorance of it in the face of assertions that some significant proportion of those edits were low quality (anecdotally, I haven't seen any such edits and the assertions have not so far been backed up by diffs; but if it's actually the case it would best be addressed sooner than later). Actual bot edits are, IMO, highly unlikely to be the source of any such issues (because BRFA tends to weed out bots that, for whatever reason, can't perform their tasks to a fairly high level of accuracy). If there are actually any significant issue with such edits, they will be by a human editor running the shortdesc helper user script, or some ad hoc AWB-type rules, and not paying enough attention. --Xover (talk) 23:00, 30 March 2019 (UTC)

@Xover: I haven't been paying attention to it either, but I saw your note about MEATBOT addition of short descriptions and wanted to point out that non-meat bot tasks (mine) have been approved to add them. Assessment and tagging

The WikiProject Civil Rights Movement was established early last year. The project needs to assess and tag existing articles on Wikipedia. That task would be greatly aided by a bot that could provide a prospective list of such articles to the project to green light if the entries look good. That bot would be comparable to User:InceptionBot (see Wikipedia:WikiProject Civil Rights Movement/New articles), but instead of new articles, drafts, or categories the bot would assess old stuff. No. The method of finding them would be similar to InceptionBot which employs rules to locate prospective pages. See the ruleset User:AlexNewArtBot/CivilRightsMovement as an example. This ruleset allows the bot to survey pages with these terms and provides a score for prospective pages. Hello, here are few wild ideas and thoughts!

  • First of all, I want to thank you for all the work you are doing around scripts, and I really loved the idea of script newsletter!
    • I had one idea, that I want to take this newsletter to Marathi wikipedia and popularize use of scripts on mrwiki in itself. - So, what are your thoughts on that and how you think we/I can do that. (Even after cutting lot of the content which is specifically meant for enwiki, we have enough things to take to the local wikis.)

When you tag for deletion a page which is transcluded, you must always bracket the speedy tag with <noinclude></noinclude>. Your failure to do this in the case of portal:Shia Islam/On this day/Jumada al-awwal/1 resulted in portal:Shia Islam/On this day/Jumada al-awwal and portal:Shia Islam/On this day both being spuriously dragged into CAT:CSD.

Normally I would accept author request (G7) speedy tags but, as I have already told you, I was requested to restore these 60 or so pages which I had deleted - in many cases as G7s. I am confused which is why I recommended you to avoid this area. And as for the AnomieBOT III list, I note that many of these broken redirects arise as a result of moves done by UnitedStatesian! AWB question

Hey Danny, would you happen to know/have code ready for how I can re-order an article's infobox parameters per template doc order and also use correct space between parameter name and "=" in AWB? I have a template I need to remove unused and also replace deprecated parameters, so while at it, I'd like to clean them up. I know how to remove and rename, but not how to re-order with correct spaces. Is this something you can help me with? --Gonnym (talk) 17:44, 4 April 2019 (UTC)

Bot mistake(?)

Your bot changed a category (Category:Users who served in the Great April Fools' Day Edit War) to a link on this page: User:InvalidOS/Userboxes/AprilFoolsEditWar, assuming it was a draft and should not have categories per WP:USERNOCAT. The page is a userbox that has been used on other users' user pages, and the category is in <includeonly> tags. I'm not entirely sure if this is the fault of an error in the bot, however, as I did notice that the category was not a subcategory of Category:Wikipedians when the edit was made. Note: I'm not sure if Category:Wikipedians actually matters here. The bot probably thought that Category:Users who served in the Great April Fools' Day Edit War was a polluted category. I have no idea why. InvalidOStalk 13:08, 6 April 2019 (UTC)
@InvalidOS: no, its because the page is in Category:April Fools' Day, which is a polluted category, and so it edited your page. I don't screen for include only or noincludes, etc, because people can mess those up; instead, if the bot edits the page, it links every category that it can. Bypassing tl?

@Headbomb: see mw:Extension:Interwiki#Setting up interlanguage links - Enabling transclusion is rarely done, as it allows an article on one wiki to use templates from some other wiki. Script request

Would it be possible to create a script for the Vector skin that adds "View source" tab next to the edit tabs even when the user has edit privileges on a page? My reason for wanting this script is that if I leave an edit page with unpublished changes, the editor saves my changes when I come back. While this can be useful, it only saves the last changes I made and undo (ctrl Z) doesn't work if I need it. With a script like this, I will be able to copy old code onto my new edit. (talk page stalker) Y'all are using the 2017 wikitext editor. I don't understand the appeal ... the page just jumped twice as I was typing this. But I don't want to get into religion... The 2017 editor links look like &veaction=editsource, while that script is looking for &action=edit. AFAIK the 2017 edit doesn't have a view source option, but &action=submit should always load the old editor regardless of the users's preferences. I suggest reviewing Wikipedia:Image use policy#Copyright and licensing - if this is your "own work", and you are willing to license it properly (see Wikipedia:Image use policy#User-created images), then I think you just add a template to the page that says so. Absolutely a bot is the way to go for templates with as many transclusions as this one had. When I started helping with these a year or so ago there was another editor who would get a bot going but I have forgotten who that was. Recent changes

Problems

  • You will be able read but not edit most wikis for 30 minutes on 11 April at 05:00 (UTC). This is because of a hardware problem. You can see a list of the affected wikis. [21]
  • A map update caused some problems on 29 March and 30 March. It was rolled back. [22]
  • Pages on some Wikivoyages had problems with the top headline. This has been fixed. [23]

Changes later this week

  • When you add an edit summary the VisualEditor will search your recent edit summaries in case you want to re-use one. This works in both the visual and wikitext modes on desktop. It also works on the mobile site. [24]
  • The Wikimedia wikis will get a URL shortener. This will work from 11 April. You can read more. [25]
  • Advanced item The {{REVISIONID}} magic word will no longer work. This is for performance reasons. When you preview a page it will return "" (empty string). When you read a page it will return "-" (dash). For now this will only affect content namespaces. [26]
  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 April. It will be on all wikis from 11 April (calendar).

  • Recurrent item Advanced item You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 10 April at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Future changes

  • You will be able to preview references. This means that when you hover over the link you will get a popup that shows you a preview of the reference. It will work much like page previews. This is so you don't have to go to the bottom of the page to see a reference. This will now be available as a beta feature on German and Arabic Wikipedia. [27][28]
  • Advanced item The Wikidata JSON output will change. Empty containers will be serialised as empty objects. This is a breaking change that will affect tools that use JSON outputs and APIs. It will happen on 30 April. You can read more and see how to test your code.

@Pppery: I tag them when AnomieBOT doesn't delete them automatically by watching User:AnomieBOT III/Broken redirects. @AlanM1: Actually, that script wasn't mine - I forked it after FR30799386 was blocked. I have updated the code to say DannyS712 instead, and have fix the typo. Chowkidar Chor Hai

Hi Danny, can you explain your reliasting rationale. the Support side have no valid justification and simply based on WP:IDONTLIKEIT type of reasoning. Moreover since the beginning of the Rename request, a WP:CFORK has been created at the target location making this rename request redundant. I would ask you to either close this RM or let another admin handle this closure or relist if he deems fit. @DBigXray: Hey. I saw it at ANRFC, and reading through the RM I felt that there was not yet consensus either way. That's why I relisted it. Even weighing the supports less, there still isn't a clear consensus against moving, and a no consensus close would (I believe) just lead to another RM soom, based on my reading of the situation. I was expecting a more detailed reasoning. No this is not a no consensus situation. Consensus is not a headcount. I have also referred to the AfD thread where the notability has been unanimously agreed upon. @DBigXray: I agree that consensus is not a head count, but re-reading through the RM, I respectfully disagree that it should be closed now. Going back further to the AfD you referred to, Winged Blades of Godric commented I, though, need to think about whether this slogan or Main Bhi Chowkidar is apt for the title. - I know that wasn't a comment as part of the RM, and I hadn't considered it until composing this reply, but I think this shows that a serious debate about the title can be had, even if the notability is agreed upon. I don't intend to close this RM, but if forced to now I would close it as no consensus. There isn't enough support for it to move, but there isn't a clear consensus against moving it either. I'm sorry we disagree about this, and I hope that the discussion is eventually resolved (not by me) in a way that is agreeable to you, but I stand by my relisting. --DannyS712 (talk) 06:23, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

I am listening to 'Listen to Wikipedia' and noticed you made dozens upon dozens, if not a couple hundred edits within mere seconds and I was curious how you did that. I find it fascinating. @Aviartm: I use a couple of scripts that make repetitive editing easier. For example WP:AWB can make simple find-and-replace edits at a manual rate of every ~3 seconds. In this case, I was using User:Evad37/Xunlink.js to remove links to deleted portals. --DannyS712 (talk) 05:55, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
