This Michigan "island" is currently on the 'Did you know' section of the front page. 75.41.110.200 (talk) 19:01, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

Recently, a discussion at WT:USRD (now archived here) stated that lists of this type should not exist, and that they should be merged into the appropriate county article. As per that discussion and consensus, the list has been nominated at WP:FLRC and WP:AFD and the core content has been merged into Marquette County, Michigan. Once the list is gone, the Featured Topic based on it will also be delisted. A previous FLRC sustained the existence of the list, but now the project seeks the elimination of these lists. Access to an article of the Michigan History Magazin

Hello,
I am sorry to disturb and if this is the wrong place and for my knowledge of English. Until lately the article of Mary A. Dempsey to Fordlandia (Dempsey, Mary A.: Fordlandia, Michigan History 1994 78(4): 24-33.) was avaible online. For unknown reason (to me) it isn't anymore. But the historical society of Michigan says it is for Michigan residents via MeL Cat. Could anybody help me please? I'd like to rework the articles concerning Ford in the german wikipedia. Thank you very much! With best regards --Catfisheye (talk) 20:32, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

A quick keyword search on MeL Cat for "Fordlandia" turned up the Grandin, but not Dempsey. A couple other quick searches didn't turn it up either, but maybe I'm looking in the wrong place. Contact my on my talk page with more info and I'll see what I can come up with. cmadler (talk) 21:08, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
Never mind; it's not online. MeL only has Michigan History magazine issues published since 1998. I'm going to my local library tonight; I'll check if they have that issue, if they don't I'll check around for other possibilities. cmadler (talk) 21:15, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

Deletion Review Notice

The article Directional Michigan has been proposed for deletion. You can participate in the discussion here.--Paul McDonald (talk) 14:08, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

Update A deletion discussion recently took place on the article Directional Michigan. The result was "no consensus" In that deletion discussion, one argument was made that there were few links to the article. After the "no consenus" resolution was reached, one of the editors supporting deletion has been removing the links in the articles for Western Michigan Broncos, Eastern Michigan Eagles, and Central Michigan Chippewas as well as other articles such as Central Michigan University, using the argument of "undue weight given to directional michigan article" in the editing comments.
So here's the question (rather than get in an "edit war"): What does everyone think of this issue, and how should links to Directional Michigan be handled?
FYI-I will post this comment on each of the respective pages in the interest of gaining a "wider breadth" of discussion, but ask that we combine all comments on the Talk:Directional Michigan page.

i just ran across this colorful article. I didn't even know that this was possible - and I really doubt it is useful. Any second opinions on this article's format. Rmhermen (talk) 23:02, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

Notification regarding Wikipedia-Books

Hadronic Matter
An overview
An example of a book cover, taken from Book:Hadronic Matter

As detailed in last week's Signpost, WikiProject Wikipedia books is undertaking a cleanup all Wikipedia books. Particularly, the {{saved book}} template has been updated to allow editors to specify the default covers of the books. Title, subtitle, cover-image, and cover-color can all be specified, and an HTML preview of the cover will be generated and shown on the book's page (an example of such a cover is found on the right). Ideally, all books in Category:Book-Class Michigan articles should have covers.

If you need help with the {{saved book}} template, or have any questions about books in general, see Help:Books, Wikipedia:Books, and Wikipedia:WikiProject Wikipedia-Books, or ask me on my talk page. Also feel free to join WikiProject Wikipedia-Books, as we need all the help we can get.

Want to contribute more info on the Algiers Motel Incident & 1967 Detroit Riots

I would like to contribute information on the Algiers Motel Incident, gleaned some years ago from Karl W. Mantyla, a former reporter for the Associated Press. (See my comments on the discussion page at the article that discusses the book "The Algiers Motel Incident"). He was one of 3 reporters who covered that event, along with John Hersey. (If my memory is correct, he said the third, a United Press International (UPI) news service reporter has died.)

Mr. Mantyla has revealed details of the events that may conflict with, and certainly provide more detail on, this event that is so central to the 1967 Detroit riots. That a conflict between reports about what occurred exists is interesting in itself, and begs comparison between the conflicting reports.

Furthermore, he has a few fascinating personal recollections about his experiences as he witnessed the events that year--at least one of them harrowing.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I should also reveal that I am related to Mr. Mantyla--not that that relationship would affect my journalistic integrity on the matter.

Any suggestions on how to proceed? I am a new contributor so anything is welcome.

Does anyone know where I can find news or magazine articles on the incident? I've looked online, and may need to hunt old filmstrips of newspapers and other hard copy sources--which I don't have much time for. Is anyone interested in helping with that aspect of the research?

I also want to reference the NPR/Michigan Radio project on the incident, available at http://www.michiganradio.org/ashestohope.html. There are news reports and articles, interviews and audio clips of those with memories of the incident. What are good ways to reference this info?

It looks like the Algiers Motel Incident is now a stub that focuses on Hersey's book rather than the incident itself. Is the event worthy of its own article? Alternatively, how can it be merged with the article on the book? Or is there another way to do it?

Thanks in advance! I want to contribute to the tapestry that reveals Detroit's rich history, and to that of the beautiful and fascinating state I live in. IrishHillsider (talk) 05:55, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

I've been working on the article A. Bird Glaspie, mostly because of my interest in college football. I've taken the article about as far as I can go. Beware comments from uninformed reviewers though. Not all suggestions, and yes, they're all suggestions not requirements, need to be implemented exactly as specified by the reviewer. Case in point, the suggestion to change a link to [[M-45|Michigan Route 45]] is a double MOS violation. One, M-45 is a disambiguation page; M-45 (Michigan highway) is the correct article title. Second, per Use Common Names, the correct piped title is just M-45. Michigan's highways have carried the M-# nomenclature since at least 1919. M-45 is not an abbreviation, it is the full, proper and common name for that roadway. The article titles only have the {Michigan highway) appended to disambiguate them from the newer motorways in Great Britain and other similar usages. Imzadi 1979  19:58, 17 September 2010 (UTC)

Michigan images

I have been adding categories to Michigan-related images on WikiCommons (and adding some of them to Wikipedia articles). It is a big job and help is appreciated. Any images in Category:Michigan should be in some sub-category, often more than one. Often people add only one category that they think is the main focus of the image but leave out many other possible and interesting categories. Searching for Michigan related text may find images that need Michigan related categories added. Links from Michigan articles here to related catoegries of images on Commons are also often missing. Detroit International Riverfront

I work with agencies responsible for economic development in the City of Detroit, and I'm seeing errors in this article. For instance -- what the article generally describes as the Detroit International Riverfront is designated the East Riverfront District in planning documents authorized and accepted by the City of Detroit. The Riverfront Conservancy is one of many collaborating entities working in the East Riverfront District, the primary one being the Economic Development Authority of the City of Detroit, which controls substantial property in the District and is managing the overall transformation of the District from industrial to mixed use residential, commercial and recreational. With all due respect, the Conservancy manages the RiverWalk and Dequindre Cut Greenway, two key public spaces in the District, and it has contributed to the overall vision for the transformation, but it is not actually responsible for more than that. Since Wikipedia would consider my direct edits a conflict of interest, I would like to submit information on the talk page for review with the intention of creating a more accurate record. As I develop specific edits, I will post them here. Thanks. D-cycler (talk) 19:56, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

A template change concerning links to highways

For anyone that's using {{jct}} to create the links to highways in articles, there has been a minor change. Previously, a type of "CR" or "CDH" would work for the County-Designated Highways. Now only CDH works for links like A-2. CR works to create links like CR 492 or CR 483. (Only CR 492 is linked because it's the only one with an article; most other county roads outside of the CDH system should not have articles.) I'm going through and updating anything I can find that calls the CR subtemplate to switch it over, but in the future only the CDH type will work for this usage. Michigan articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Michigan articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

For the Wikipedia 1.0 editorial team, SelectionBot 23:20, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for this feedback - comments have been made there. I took the liberty of adding History of Detroit, since the comment was made that there was a shortage of historical articles in the selection. Please let me know if there's a problem with that article. Thanks, Walkerma (talk) 23:05, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

A consideration for cross project consolidation of talk page templates

I have started a conversation here about the possibility of combining some of the United States related WikiProject Banners into {{WikiProject United States}}. If you have any comments, questions or suggestions please take a moment and let me know. --Kumioko (talk) 19:55, 27 November 2010 (UTC)

The WPMichigan banner template has fields for "attention," "reference needed," and "image needed." There is also a Detroit task force, which should have its own importance/assessment field. If these could be incorporated into the WPUS banner, then I don't see why it wouldn't work. Cmcnicoll (talk) 03:04, 17 December 2010 (UTC)

Michigan State Historic Sites

Hello, members of WikiProject Michigan. I, a member of WP:NRHP, have recently finished emptying out Category:NRHP infobox needing cleanup and have noticed that the remaining articles in this category contain NRHP infoboxes showing the Michigan State Historic Site designation when the site isn't listed on the NRHP. Use of the NRHP infobox is limited to sites that are actually on the National Register, but I see you're in kind of a conundrum here as there is nowhere else really to turn. {{Infobox Historic Site}} doesn't support Michigan sites yet because the register doesn't pass through its requirements, but I've begun trying to remedy the situation (because of OCD and wanting to empty that category haha). I've begun a small list at User:Dudemanfellabra/Sandbox of the first 20 sites listed at the MSHDA database (which is wayyyy too clunky and needs an update IMO, but I digress). I was wondering if any of you would like to help out with finishing the list and moving it into mainspace. Once this list is in place, I'm pretty sure the folks over at WP:HSITES (of which I am a member as well) will be fine with adding support for the Michigan register.

Btw, if anyone knows of a better place than this site where I can get information about Michigan sites, it would be nice of you to point it out haha. Currently I can only copy/paste 10 listings at a time, and the formatting is horrible, so I imagine this list will take an extended amount of time to complete. Any help would be appreciated, though. Thanks!--Dudemanfellabra (talk) 20:05, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

Personally, I don't see what's the problem. Honestly though, that other infobox is ugly and I prefer the NHRP one. Imzadi 1979  20:41, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. Please let leave a comment on the Portals talk page or let me know if you have any questions or ideas. --Kumioko (talk) 19:15, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

Collaboration with the Wine Project on Michigan wine articles?

Hello! For 2011 the Wine Project is doing a new Wine Improvement Drive where each month we focus on an area of articles that relate to a particular theme. In January, we are are ringing in the New Year with New World wine, with a focus on the wines of the Northern Hemisphere-Canadian wine, American wine and Mexican wine. I am going by related projects to see if there is any interest in collaboration between this project and the wine project on the subject of Michigan wine.
Some suggestion on potential article creations include History of Michigan wine and Tabor Hill Winery or expanding important Michigan wine articles beyond a stub such as Fennville AVA, Lake Michigan Shore AVA, Leelanau Peninsula AVA and Old Mission Peninsula AVA. Another idea would be creating articles on notable wineries such as Bo Schembechler Wines, Ciccone Vineyard and Winery, Chateau Grand Traverse, L Mawby Wines and Two Lads Winery. On a smaller scale, there are Michigan wine related articles that could use some help with clean up such as Farmington Winery (Michigan), which could use some help establishing notability and referencing to avoid AFD. And, of course, of HUGE help would be the upload of free use photos of Michigan wineries, wines and wine regions to Commons that could be used to better illustrate Michigan wine articles. If you're interested in helping, please drop a note at the Wine Project's talk page with the article you're interested in helping with. Thanks and have a great New Year! AgneCheese/Wine 01:08, 2 January 2011 (UTC)

I doubt that Ciccone would qualify and have never even heard of Bo Schembechler Wines or Two Lads Winery. Not major players. Rmhermen (talk) 04:05, 20 January 2011 (UTC)

Relationship with WikiProject United States

People from a variety of WikiProjects have had concerns about the scope of WikiProject United States and its relationship with other WikiProjects. We have created an RFC and invite all interested editors to discuss it at: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject United States#Mission statement for WikiProject United States. Thanks, Racepacket (talk) 15:33, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

Just to clarify the misrepresentative statement left above. 4 or 5 editors (most work on the same couple projects) have voiced concern of the Scope of the project of which Racepacket is the main voice. The project has tried to work with them on adjustments to the Mission statement and defining the importance descriptions but they will not relent until WikiProject United States agrees to resitrict its scope to only include National importance articles which would require that any projects associated with WPUS be disassociated and cut lose to succeed or fail on their own. I do encourage you to way in on the discussions. --Kumioko (talk) 15:40, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
I think that his response shows why wide-spread discussion is needed in the RFC. Thanks, Racepacket (talk) 16:13, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
There is no need for widespread discussion now I have left WikiProject United States so Racepacket will stop distracting it with discussions and the project can get back to business. --Kumioko (talk) 00:57, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

One of the bridges listed here is Jeddo Road – South Branch Mill Creek Drain Bridge (yes, red link - no article). The location for this bridge is shown as Brookway Township, Michigan, St. Clair County, Michigan. Now searching for the bridge in Google shows multiple hits for the bridge in Brookway. BUT I cannot find a Brookway Township in St. Clair County, though there is a Brockway Township (Brockway_Township,_Michigan) and Google Maps shows this township as quite close to the bridge.

I suspect that the problem goes back to the Register website which shows

WEEKLY LIST OF ACTIONS TAKEN ON PROPERTIES: 1/24/00 THROUGH 1/28/00
.....
MICHIGAN, ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Jeddo Road--South Branch Mill Creek Drain Bridge, Jeddo Rd. over S. Branch Mill Creek Drain, Brookway Township, 00000013, LISTED, 1/28/00 (Highway Bridges of Michigan MPS)

In other words; there seems to be a typo in the most official source for a National Register listing, and this typo has been copied across the web.

Can anyone help here? Is there really a Brookway Township, or does my typo theory seem the most likely explanation?

VinculumMan (talk) 10:45, 20 January 2011 (UTC)

Most likely a OCR error. There is no Brookway in St. Clair County. You could alert the National Register to the error but I expect it would be a long time getting fixed. Rmhermen (talk) 15:35, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
You can report the error here.--Dudemanfellabra (talk) 02:30, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

List of Michigan State Historic Sites

After about six months of work by me with some help from User:Andrew Jameson, the List of Michigan State Historic Sites is now in mainspace. That link is to the main state article, but because there are so many sites on the register, the list is split up into many different counties, categorized here. There is also a navbox template here. Any new articles that are on these lists should be placed in Category:Michigan State Historic Sites. There is ample opportunity here to take pictures or write about interesting, historic places in the state. Have fun!--Dudemanfellabra (talk) 16:56, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

Does anyone have any objections if I run through all of the pages to correct errors in highway designations? Case in point: M-41 hasn't existed since 1926, and it was a highway north of Muskegon, yet there is a listing in Chocolay Township in Marquette County that mentions M-41. (Yes, I know, that's an error in your official sources, but it's still a clear error.) At the same time, I'd also add wikilinks to the specific highway articles in the listings. Thoughts? Imzadi 1979  17:45, 10 June 2011 (UTC)
Sounds good to me. Not being from the state, I'm not too knowledgeable about any of that, so I just regurgitated what the database had in it. I linked to some things (state parks, colleges, city parks, etc.) in the "Location" header, but by all means clean up my work. That's what Wikipedia is for!--Dudemanfellabra (talk) 18:22, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

New portal

I have started a new portal related to the state, Portal:Michigan Highways, that will primarily focus on the state highways and notable major county roads of the Great Lakes State. Each month, the selected article, selected photo and did you know sections will update. (Since it is so late into May, the first update will automatically happen for July.) I have already scheduled out the updates for the first year, but the schedule can always be changed. I'm planning on having the SA and SP feature opposing peninsulas: if the article is from the UP, the photo is from the LP and vice versa. Suggestions and feedback are welcome. I plan on taking this portal to WP:FPOC at some point in the near future. Imzadi 1979  01:28, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

Just an update, but the portal was promoted at FPoC and has joined the ranks of the Featured Portals on Wikipedia. Imzadi 1979  20:26, 5 September 2011 (UTC)

Geology of Michigan

I found a good page from michigan.gov that provides geology and mining reports for Michigan. [1] Looks to be a good resource. Chris857 (talk) 01:34, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

Just a note - I proposed that article for deletion. I couldn't find any news stories other than one saying that they have reorganized for 2012. The main site for the festival appears to no longer work (double checked with google), so since that was the primary source for everything in the article I couldn't verify anything said in it. Figured I'd drop a note here in case anyone local to the festival would have any resources for it. The original article creator hasn't edited since 2009. Thanks! WikiWomen's History Month

Hi everyone. March is Women's History Month and I'm hoping a few folks here at WP:Michigan will have interest in putting on events (on and off wiki) related to women's roles in Michigan's history, society and culture. We've created an event page on English Wikipedia (please translate!) and I hope you'll find the inspiration to participate. These events can take place off wiki, like edit-a-thons, or on wiki, such as themes and translations. Please visit the page here: WikiWomen's History Month. Thanks for your consideration and I look forward to seeing events take place! SarahStierch (talk) 00:26, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Michigan regional acronyms

I noticed that not all of the various commonly-used Michigan regional acronyms were represented here on wikipedia - for example, the LP diambiguation page didn't mention the Lower Peninsula as a possible meaning, neither did the EUP or the NLP page for Eastern Upper Peninsula and Northern Lower Peninsula respectively. I have a question that I hope members of this wikiproject can answer - how commonly-used in the real world are the acronyms "NWLP", "SWLP", "NELP" and "SELP" for the quadrants of the lower peninsula? SP-KP (talk) 11:22, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

LP is the only one of those I recognize. 75.41.109.190 (talk) 13:46, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
Same here. If I were feeling cantankerous, I might challenge that you need to provide references to reliable sources supporting the use of EUP, WUP, NLP, and SLP. And to be honest, LP is not very commonly used either. UP is common and LP more of a parallel construction than a distinctive form. olderwiser 13:53, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. EUP seems fairly widely used - a google search for "EUP" Michigan (quotemarks around the ELP only) gives plenty of relevant results, for example. WUP seems less well-used, but by similarly googling you can still find plenty of sources that use it (I'll let you form your own opinion on how reliable they are). NLP and SLP are trickier as you have to wade through lots of links to neuro-linguistic programming and speech language therapy but if you add the word peninsula to your search string, you can find references to these too. I won't go any further with these four-letter acronyms, unless others post contrary views here. SP-KP (talk) 14:06, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

I agree with Bkonrad; UP is the only truly common abbreviation, with LP developing from that. I've never heard any of the other suggested abbreviations. cmadler (talk) 17:21, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
Eastern UP and to a lesser extent Western UP are used here in the UP itself, and the abbreviations aren't completely foreign although I'd say that they're maybe a little more common as part of a larger abbreviation like the Eastern Upper Peninsula Transportation Authority (EUPTA) or the Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Region (WUPPDR), but we do talk about the Eastern UP, the Central UP, and the Western UP in things like high school sports reports or the weather forecasts on TV or in the newspapers. Halo Burger

I am in an arguement with another editor on the Halo Burger article conducted on my talk page and the article's talk page. He wants to only claim that the company was found in 1923 do to the company logo and even sources the company's website. He shows me other source including one written by him, that supposedly indicate that it was found then, to which I point out that those are indirect quotes from the now former owner or indicate an "evolved" instead of one date foundation, since Halo Burger is a spin off business. So any outside opinions would be welcome. Spshu (talk) 13:55, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Article needs updating

Hello! I just came across the article United States House of Representatives elections in Michigan, 2010 and discovered that it is completely out of date. It is all written in the future tense as if the election had not yet taken place. I changed the tense of the lead sentence before I discovered that the entire article is out of date; the article has not been seriously edited since October 2010. There are no results posted, just polling data and predictions. Someone please update this article ASAP! (Can't do it myself, I'm not even from Michigan.) Thanks. --MelanieN (talk) 14:39, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

Photos of Upper Michigan and NW Lower Michigan

I toured Michigan a few weeks ago I took MANY photos. I drove US2 around the top of Lake Michigan to Mackinaw City, then US 31 to Traverse City, M-72 west to Sleeping Bear Dunes, M-22/M-109 northeast to the top then south back, up the Old Mission Peninsula, back to Mackinaw City (including M-119) then Mackinac Island before returning US2. I photographed the communities along the route and I'll upload the images when I have a chance during the rest of this year. Please let me know if you have any requests along that route. I photographed more than just the highlights. It was fun to take off for a full week and my most relaxing trip since at least 2005. Royalbroil 16:10, 5 September 2011 (UTC)

You could have left a note beforehand – I could have recommended some good spots to visit and stay. :-) (I'm at college in Marquette and lived in Iron River) Can't wait to see what you got! Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 16:16, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
I'm looking forward to seeing what he shot along the way. There should be some valuable additions to some of the state highway articles along the route of his trip. Imzadi 1979  20:25, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
Sorry but I did bring it up on Imzadi's talk page. I should have brought it up here. I drove almost this same trip in 2004 so I knew what I wanted to see. I should have asked so I could have discovered other great things to see! I've been all over the UP including all of the counties and the major communities. Royalbroil 22:00, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
So far I uploaded pictures for places on the National Register of Historic Places which will be some of the most beautiful of the trip (besides Mackinac Bridge, Mackinac Island, and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore). Some county diffs (Mackinac, Menominee, Antrim, Leelanau, Emmet, and Grand Traverse). Enjoy! Royalbroil 01:03, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
I just realized how weird that probably sounded coming from a random guy on the internet who you don't know. Sorry 'bout that. No worries on not asking! If you go again, I can help you with Iron and Gogebic counties, and to some extent Marquette. :-) Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 03:50, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
And of course, this native Yooper can probably help better with Marquette County, seeing as how I'm from Negaunee. Imzadi 1979  01:17, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
Any pictures that can be added to List of Michigan State Historic Sites? That's another big register-list that needs pictures/articles added to it.--Dudemanfellabra (talk) 02:29, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

Unincorporated communities

I identified some images and I have a question about how things are done in Michigan. In Wisconsin, we allow articles on even the tiniest community. I know of Wisconsin places that have only a sign and a bar that have articles - but that's a far below average example. What about places like Nadeau, Michigan? I thought that I heard that you do not allow articles on unincorporated communities when the name of the community is the same as its township. Have things changed? A perfect example is Epoufette, Michigan - which I have photographed. Can this be converted into a stub article where I add the photos? Royalbroil 04:52, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

Can't you just add them to the township? We have some little places, such as Alcona, Michigan (ghost town) which then appears under Alcona Township, Michigan. My experience is that these teensie weensie towns don't usually get their own article. I'm not taking a position here as to whether that is a good idea, but am reporting what I have observed. 7&6=thirteen () 14:01, 30 September 2011 (UTC)
Why should I waste my time to add a photo that is out of place? I have to identify the photo, crop it, figure out categories on Commons, upload on a slow connection, then add it to an article where it is out of place. It takes a bunch of time for each photo. I'm talking dozens (maybe 50) communities so over 100 photos. Especially for places of higher notability like Naubinway, Michigan where I have a quality photograph of its decent-sized post office. In Wisconsin, these teensie weensie communities ALWAYS get articles. Royalbroil 03:25, 1 October 2011 (UTC)
I don't think that the photos are out of place in the township articles. How else would you illustrate those articles? And if these places ever are deemed worthy of separate articles they can be spun out of the township article complete with images. I think it would be valuable work. Rmhermen (talk) 03:30, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

I understand the frustration with these small communities. Population is a poor factor; some tiny communities are extremely significant and worthy of being included in an encyclopedia, a good example would be the ghosttown on the beach of Douglas (with 0 population) that was created from the stripping away of the forest to rebuild Chicago after the Great Fire. On the other hand, the article, Hagar Shores, has been redirected to Lake Michigan Beach, a small segment of Hagar Shores with no historical significance--only a population. --David Holmer 12:19, 9 July 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Davidholmer (talkcontribs)

Michigan in the Olympics

The Detroit News claims 40 of this year's Olympians have Michigan ties. I think they stretch the definition a bit (college students, Team Wolverine members) but still there is plenty of opportunities for this WikiProject.[2] Another source gives this list:

[3] Rmhermen (talk) 14:47, 22 July 2012 (UTC)

I see that list missed Serena Williams (born in Michigan). Rmhermen (talk) 15:01, 22 July 2012 (UTC)
I looked at one of these at random and found it had not been updated for 2012 - but the official TeamUSA website hadn't really been updated either. Luckily newspaper sources are better. Rmhermen (talk) 16:32, 22 July 2012 (UTC)

Fort photo id needed

Where is this fort?

Can anyone identify the location of this poorly labeled photo. Fort Wilkins appears to have white buildings, not like these. Rmhermen (talk) 00:02, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

Looking at a picture on Google Maps, there are similarly colored buildings at Fort Wilkins, though of a different architecture. It's been a while since I've been there, so these may be at Wilkins, but I'm not sure. The only other fort I know of in the UP is Fort Michilimackinac. Chris857 (talk) 01:25, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
Michilimackinac isn't in the UP though; it's in Mackinaw City in the LP. Maybe you're thinking of Fort Mackinac on Mackinac Island, which is considered part of the UP? (Of course, we're assuming that the caption is correct.) I haven't been to Fort Wilkins in a few years either, but I don't think that's it either. I don't remember any trees and benches like that in the fort area. Imzadi 1979  02:17, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
Fort Mackinac is pretty much all white, too. I am leaning toward Fort Michilimackinac, with about 90% certainty. It is all raw wood like the picture, even though it isn't in the UP. I think perhaps the uploader was mistaken on location. Gtwfan52 (talk) 17:09, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
Uploader responded on my talk page. It's a fort in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Rmhermen (talk) 20:12, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
I've gone and requested a rename as it is not in Michigan. Chris857 (talk) 21:31, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

I just noticed this list languishing on the nominations for Featured List with not enough discussion. Anybody want to add their opinions? Rmhermen (talk) 17:47, 25 July 2012 (UTC)

Lake City information

After viewing the page dedicated to Lake City, I saw a few things that were not included on the page.

Town Festivals

I believe that highlighting the city’s celebrations (The Greatest Fourth in the North and The Festival of the Pines) would be beneficial in further painting the picture of the city. Information on these festivals is found on the Lake City Chamber of commerce website (http://www.lakecitymich.com/).

Christmas Tree Production

It has been mentioned that Lake City is the "Christmas Tree Capital of the North" but that topic is another that is not advertised. Ron Watson Tree Farm is where the majority of the trees are grown and could be a big draw to the city especially during the holiday season (www.ronwatsontreefarms.com).

Scenic Lake City

Lake City is the perfect place to escape from the urban world. Vacationers can visit this small Michigan town to experience the quiet life, take in nature, fish and relax on a boat. There is no mention of Missaukee Mountain (http://www.michigan.org/property/detail.aspx?p=G13094), which may benefit those researching the area for travel purposes. It also aides in informing those of the offerings of the city beyond the lakes. More information on the lakes would be nice to see, as well. Currently, there is no information on the individual lakes (size, fishing). Information on Lake Missaukee, Lake Sapphire, and Crooked Lake can be found here: http://www.lake-link.com/Michigan-Lake-Finder/.

I believe these changes would offer the users of Wikipedia a better sense of Lake City and the character of the town.

Thank you for reading and I hope these update suggestions become a reality.

Rkanas72 (talk) 23:13, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

I copied this to Talk:Lake City, Michigan. You are encouraged to make improvements yourself, Rkanas72. I don't know that Lake-link would pass as a reliable source though I am certain a better source could be found for that information. Rmhermen (talk) 18:38, 25 July 2012 (UTC)

Two Michigan-related articles need your help!

The Carleton W. Angell and the Bath School disaster articles would really benefit from having a good image of Angell's 'Girl with a Cat'. The statue is is presently located behind glass at the Bath School Disaster Museum in the Bath, Michigan Middle School. From what I've seen of the somewhat-poor images available online, the actual statue...well, after you look at it a while, I don't know why, but it is really powerful...and it's just a statue of a little girl with her hair blowing in the wind holding a cat. If anyone can lend a hand with this quest, please post on my talkpage. A pic of this statue that would really improve both articles. Thanks for listening, Shearonink (talk) 17:11, 21 December 2012 (UTC)

One issue with this is that the statue is likely to be under copyright and any picture could only be used on English Wikipedia and under fair use rules. Rmhermen (talk) 17:35, 21 December 2012 (UTC)
The statue was created in 1928, so yeah, it is not in the public domain. The statue is owned by the city of Bath and Angell died in 1962, so you're right about the image only being able to be used on Wikipedia itself re:the fair use rules etc. A photo of the statue was republished in the 50th Anniversary pamphlet in 1977, found here. I've been trying to find the linkage for the Wikipedia guidelines for this sort of situation (using an image of a work of art where the artist's works are not public domain) but have been unsuccessful. Do you have any links you could post?
In its day, this statue seems to have been very well-known, both for what it memorialized and for the way the funds were raised (pennies from Michigan schoolchildren) to pay for it. I am going to contact the University of Michigan/Ann Arbor after the holidays to see if they can tell me who holds the copyrights to Angell's works. They might know since he was on the faculty there for 34 years and the University holds some of his works. Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 18:13, 21 December 2012 (UTC)

media in southfield mi

Although the description for media in the southfield area was very informative including the tv stations that reside in the community it failed to mention the the word network which shares the grounds of wxyz. This network is not only locally seen but worldwide having millions of viewers from hundreds of countries tuning in to enjoy Christian based programs. As one of those viewers and as a southfield resident I would be most appreciative to see this station included as one of the entities in this community to be proudly mentioned. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.87.115.45 (talk) 21:20, July 7, 2013‎ (UTC)

There are only 10 articles left of over 200 on Michigan's roads and highway system that have not been promoted to GA or higher. The article on MDOT is one of them. As a government agency instead of a single road, there isn't really a time-tested formula set up for the article, and no other state's DOT article is listed as a GA at the present. If anyone is interested, please offer suggestions on the talk page to help get it ready for a future GA nomination. Imzadi 1979  10:30, 19 November 2013 (UTC)

Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

If you have any questions, want to report any bugs, or there are any features you would like to see that aren't currently available on the Toolserver tools, see the updated FAQ or contact me on my talk page. Mr.Z-bot (talk) (for Mr.Z-man) 05:16, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

Frankfort House

My father, John C. Bockoven, Jr. retired in 1985 and spent that summer plus the next two summers working on that house, hiring a hydraulics crew to lift the house in order to rebuild the crumbling foundation, getting the house bath and kitchen functional, getting rid of the skunks and smell in the attic, and repainting the entire exterior. I don't know how to verify this, except to talk with the current owners. I would just like to see my dad get a tiny bit of credit for the work he did. I do have a picture of him holding the plaque by the house when it was granted historical status. Would that be considered adequate support?

____ Beverly (Bockoven) Doyle 67.159.136.156 (talk) 05:56, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

We would need a published source for that information. If the information has been written up in a book, then we could include it, but unpublished interviews with the current owners aren't exactly acceptable sources because of verification concerns. Imzadi 1979  06:24, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
