the Sydney Journal

[edit]

Hi there, Just thought I'd drop you, and others from the recent meetup, a line and mention that the first edition of the Dictionary of Sydney's online, peer-reviewed journal is now live.

The Sydney Journal is the first (and most academically rigorous) "product" of the Dictionary. It will be a quarterly publication with a variety of texts from upcoming Dictionary articles and is hosted by UTS E-press. This edition features 4 thematic articles, 6 ethnicities and 5 suburbs - all specifically related to Sydney.

I hope you find it useful and interesting - If nothing else it's essays are eminently referenceable for their corresponding articles here on WP.

Wikimedia commons

[edit]

Hi Aliasd,I'm an editor from the french wiipedia and i'm actually translating some articles about PNG, I can see you made a lot of work about this topic and it's great for us to have some good article to translate about this country so remote for us so unknown in France. So Txs a lot for that. But I will have one question, you downloaded a lot of free of rights images in en:wikipedia why don't you download them in commons instead? Cause we cannot use them easily and I think it's a pity. Best regards--Kimdime69 (talk) 00:09, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There are quite a lot of images I posted to Wikipedia instead of Commons before I understood image licensing and had a commons account etc, sorry for that. I think there is an admin or bureaucrat on Commons that has a bot that can move compatible licensed images over en mass on request. I would ask over there or on IRC if I were you. I most certainly have no problem at all with images I have uploaded that have a compatible license being moved to Commons. aliasd·U·T 13:43, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Map error

[edit]

Hello - I was admiring your map work and using it for reference when I noticed that there may be a slight error in your map of Bougainville (North Solomons). Your map includes Treasury Islands, Shortland Islands and Fauro Island as part of Bougainville, however, Yahoo, Google, Microsoft, the CIA factbook, and even the Constitution of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (2004)([1]) show that these islands belong to the Solomon Islands, not Papua New Guinea. Here is a description of Bougainville from the Constitution:

  • Commencing at the point of intersection of the meridian 154 degrees east longitude with the Equator thence by the said Equator east to its intersection with the meridian 160 degrees east longitude thence by the said meridian 160 degrees east longitude south to its intersection with the parallel 4 degrees 50 minutes south latitude thence by the said parallel 4 degrees 50 minutes south latitude west to its intersection with the meridian 159 degrees east longitude thence by a straight line south-westerly to a point distant 6 nautical miles on a bearing of 42 degrees true from Cape Friendship thence by a straight line southerly to a point distance 4 nautical miles on a bearing of 70 degrees 30 minutes true from Cape Friendship aforesaid thence by a straight line south-westerly to a point distant 3 nautical miles due south from the southern point of the peninsula which bounds the harbour of Tonelei on the east thence by a straight line south-westerly to a point distant 3 nautical miles due south from Moila Point thence by a straight line westerly to a point distant 8 nautical miles on a bearing of 249 degrees true from Moila Point aforesaid thence by a straight line south-westerly to the intersection of the parallel 8 degrees south latitude with the meridian 154 degrees east longitude thence by the said meridian 154 east longitude north to the point of commencement.

As you can see, this description falls in line with the boundaries displayed in the above mentioned sources. So did you possibly mistake these islands on your map? I will add to the confusion that THIS WEBSITE shows the islands as included as part of Bougainville. Rarelibra (talk) 14:57, 15 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wow! this is a bit confusing. I will go ahead and change the map shortly to support the boundary quoted in the constitution. I used the UPNG Remote Sensing Centre as a primary source, and obviously copied the error from there. Thankyou for your hard work getting to the bottom of this. aliasd·U·T 00:12, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hey aliasd - I think I have changed my opinion on this situation. Recently I noticed several cases where the data in Google and Microsoft (same sources anyway) is highly inaccurate. There is one particular case where the data showed islands owned by South Korean as possessions of North Korea (this was even challenged by the South Korean government). Yet the data hasn't been changed or updated. There are also other islands incorrectly named. So I think your maps are correct!!! Rarelibra (talk) 13:56, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Aliasd! Not only Google Map and Microsoft Virtual Earth are depicting Treasury Islands, Shortland Islands and Fauro Island as Solomon property.

There are Australian sources:

Solomon Islans sources:

USA sources:

British sources:

I'm sure you can find a lot of sources, where Treasury Islands, Shortland Islands and Fauro Island are in Solomon Islands. The WikiPedia, as you know, is one of these sources.

As you know, we can find only ONE source where Treasury Islands, Shortland Islands and Fauro Island are shown as Papua-New Guinean. It is the Papua-New Guinea University site digital map. The rest of the maps (your and RareLibra) are this source replics.

[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article WB:SOAP, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. --Clubjuggle T/C 03:38, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

maps

[edit]

Hi Aliasd,

I see you've made some nice svg maps of PNG. Would it be possible for you to upload a blank or blankable svg map of the islands east of PNG, from New Ireland through the Solomons, and including the islands off the tip of PNG? I'd like to make a map of the various "East Papuan" language families. Also, if you have a fairly detailed svg map of New Guinea as a whole, I'd like to do this for the entire island, though that may take a while; and also the islands to the west, or at least Timor and Halmahera.

I have been a member to wikipedia for a while but I haven't done much editing recently so I am a little rusty but I will try to update as many Papua New Guinea pages as I can. I do know some Tok Pisin but it is not perfect. I have edited some Tok Pisin Pages such as this one. I hope to make more contributions but they might go slowly as we wait to go to PNG.

Muschu Island, PNG

[edit]

Since you are a participant of PNG ... I was wondering would it be a suitable idea to add the islands' to WikiProject PNG? Such as Muschu Island? It was involved in World War II where the Japanese held-island? This island is also mentioned (or included) in Z Special Unit in Operation Copper. I was mainly thinking it as a military subject which could extend to what the island is used for in recent years. Feedback would be appreciated. Adamdaley (talk) 10:50, 21 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:Tabubil-from-the-air.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Tabubil-from-the-air.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 05:22, 8 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. File permission problem with File:Tari.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Tari.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included.

You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Kelly hi! 15:04, 1 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The file File:RedMap-Margate.png has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

unused, low-res, no obvious use

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. File source problem with File:Kimbe.png

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Kimbe.png. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next seven days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page.
