[edit] History
The constituency was created in 1974 from the former seats of Wembley North and Wembley South. A safe Conservative seat for many years, it was held by Lancastrian former headmaster Rhodes Boyson with ease before Labour's victory in 1997 helped win this seat. In both the 1997 and 2001 general elections, Brent North produced the highest swing of all constituencies with a massive swing in favour of the Labour Party.[2] Labour's percentage majority halved at the 2005 general election, from 30.1% to 15.8%.[3]
[edit] Boundaries
Since 2010 the constituency is made up of nine electoral wards from the London Borough of Brent:
- Alperton, Barnhill, Fryent, Kenton, Northwick Park, Preston, Queensbury, Sudbury, and Wembley Central.
The remaining wards in the London Borough of Brent are used in the Brent Central constituency, with the exception of the wards of Brondesbury Park, Kilburn and Queens Park, which form part of the new Hampstead and Kilburn seat.
[edit] Proposed changes
As part of the Sixth Periodic Review of Westminster constituencies, which commenced in 2011, the Boundary Commission for England have proposed abolishing Brent North, using its components wards to create three new seats - Harrow, Stanmore, and Wembley and Perivale[4]. Of the wards which constitute Brent North:
- Alperton, Barnhill, Northwick Park, Preston, Sudbury and Wembley Central would be placed in 'Wembley and Perivale'
- Fryent, and Queensbury would be placed in 'Stanmore'
- Kenton would be placed in Harrow[5].
