Help test better mass message delivery

Hi. You're being contacted as you've previously used global message delivery (or its English Wikipedia counterpart). It doesn't feel so great to be spammed, does it? ;-)

For the past few months, Legoktm has built a replacement to the current message delivery system called MassMessage. MassMessage uses a proper user interface form (no more editing a /Spam subpage), works faster (it can complete a large delivery in minutes), and no longer requires being on an access list (any local administrator can use it). In addition, many tiny annoyances with the old system have been addressed. It's a real improvement! :-)

You can test out MassMessage here: testwiki:Special:MassMessage. The biggest difference you'll likely notice is that any input list must use a new {{#target:}} parser function. For example, {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales}} or {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales|test2.wikipedia.org}}. For detailed instructions, check out mw:Help:Extension:MassMessage.

I think that you need to restore the file revision by Gsingh (talk · contribs). The file is attributed to "I, the copyright holder of this work" and now it looks as if you are "I, the copyright holder of this work". Also, if someone decides to move the file to Commons, most move to Commons tools would attribute the file to "Diannaa, the copyright holder of this work" which is obviously wrong. --Stefan2 (talk) 13:48, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

Sternbuch train

Whereas I can't readily find a source calling the train by thus name, it us well documented (and cited) that the Sternbuchs negotiated for the passengers' release and paid a huge ransom to the Nazis. Because of this it is logical and true to fact to state that "perhaps the train should be called the Sternbuch train" - especially so since the Sternbuchs did this unselfishly, unlike Ksztner who put on the train hundreds of his family and friends - and because many consider Kasztner to have been a collaborator with the Nazis and responsible for large ;oss of life. Request for closure

I was wondering if there was any reason why Wikipedia:Files for deletion/2013 August 24#File:BNL BigBang.jpg can't be closed. The discussion has been going on for 6 weeks now and the only participants have been George Ho and myself. Need Some Help

Hey Dianna, I need some help with an editor (User:Radiofox35) who is adding unsourced original research to the WCDX and WPZZ pages. I tried talking to the user on their talk page and got the standard "You would see the information I Provided about WCDX is accurate" and "why don't you do the research yourself" nonsense you get when someone doesn't want to follow the rules.

Since I'm still on 2RR, per Drmies, I can't revert WCDX anymore, but since the editor just isn't getting it, could you step in on both pages (and others on the user's contribs) and perhaps talk some sense into them. Thanks in advance...Neutralhomer • Talk • 22:08, 6 October 2013 (UTC)

It got readded, by a different user, and with the same reference. While VARTV is a good temporary source, most of what you see on there is itself original research. New user issue

Hi, Diannaa,

I've been dealing with an article creation request by a fairly new user, Faisalhussain mohammed (talk). While I was doing that, I noticed that he seems to be having a lot of trouble with Wikipedia policies. For example, he's had a bunch of media deleted for license issues, several articles speedily deleted for copyright violation, and he's practically at war with admin Qwyrxian (talk) over reliably sourcing BLP's into various lists.

I think Qwyrxian may be frustrated enough to ban him.

It would be a shame if language and cultural barriers drove an eager new user away from WP. Can you think of a way to diffuse this? Perhaps someone who has an Indian Muslim background could help mentor him? I'm just not aware of resources that might help here.

(I contacted you because I saw that you were one of the admins who removed one of his media files, and from past experience, I know you are pretty level-headed and non-abrasive.)

Closure of a discussion

Hi, I think that your closure of a free-use discussion relating to an Indian election symbol is causing issues at Talk:Aam_Aadmi_Party#Election_Symbol_.28Broom.29. Contra to your remark on the article talk page (that you've now copied to the NFCR discussion), the party logo in use in the article is actually a free one, not a non-free one. As a result both RouLong and now Sitush appear to be interpreting you as saying that as the broom would be the only non-free image (the other image being free), its use should be permissible.

I'm not sure that that was your position, but in any case the key discussion was about whether or not the broom symbol could/should be used additionally to the free logo under NFCC #8 and NFCC #3a, as giving qualitatively different information that was of value to the reader.

Thanks for the link. The source (RadioInsight) does not back up the added content about "roadhouse oldies" and basketball broadcasts, so that part should come out if no source can be found. Why have you removed the photos of Port Moresby?

the source website states that the images are available "for research and educational purposes only. Researchers will be asked to sign a declaration to that effect." You changed the copyright tag to {{PD-Hubble}}. Did you notice that our local {{PD-Hubble}} differs to the one on Commons? The one on Commons states that material by ESA must have been created before 2009 whereas our template suggests that it also applies to more recent ESA images. According to Commons:Template:ESA-Hubble, more recent ESA images are licensed under CC-BY instead. The file seems to be free, but I don't know if the copyright tag is the correct one. The uploader appears to have specified the date of upload instead of the date of creation, and the source website is currently unavailable due to the United States federal government shutdown of 2013. Commons:Template:PD-Hubble contains a link to the Internet Archive which shows that ESA used to claim that the files were "copyright-free". I guess that the answer is that ESA changed the wording at some point without mentioning that it previously said that the material was "copyright-free". The dates on Commons appear to come from the assumption that ESA was unable to take any material back from the public domain and that the CC licence only can be enforced for new material. --Stefan2 (talk) 20:48, 8 October 2013 (UTC)

@Oxfordindiamoot: First of all, feel free to report Diannaa - it'll result in your being blocked for repeated insertion of copyrighted information without a proper release being submitted. Second of all, you'll also be blocked as your username is a violation of our username policy. Furthermore, you should not be trying to edit pages you're affiliated with, as you have a conflict of interest. Another thing, you should not accuse persons of vandalism when they are not vandalizing, that will also get you blocked.

Now, onto the real issue here. Wikipedia is not the place for you to own a page, nor is it the place for you to put your organization's website. You may not use your website as a Wikipedia article, at all, period. Again, you do not own the content of the page, and anyone is free to edit it in any way they see fit. File deletion: Trayvon Martin on the backseat of a car.png

Concerning your recent deletion of an image titled file:Trayvon Martin on the backseat of a car.png. Looking over the archived discussion, it says the above discussion is preserved as an archive of the debate. I see no discussion or debate that took place. Is it normal procedure to not notify talk pages of articles that were using this image, so involved editor's working on those articles can have a say in the discussion? The reason this particular image was being used is because it portrays Martin closer to the age when he was shot and killed. The other image of Martin in the hoodie, at a younger age, is the iconic image that was used during protests and marches. Is this a final decision based upon one single editor simply saying that two unfree photos of Martin are not needed? What's supposed to happen is the person who nominates the image for deletion should place a template on the usages of the image so editors interested on the related articles are notified. The relevant template for WP:FFD is Template:FFDC. Sorry this step does not seem to have been done in this case. The reason why the image was deleted with out a discussion actually occurring is because the default for that nomination process is it defaults to delete.

Our non-free content policy requires a minimal use of non-free content. That means there should only be one non-free image of Trayvon Martin in the article. I don't know why the nominator chose to nominate this file rather than the image with the hoodie. I think the best way to proceed is to restore the image and to open a discussion at WP:NFCR as to which one should be kept, or if indeed the inclusion of two non-free images of Mr Martin are warranted. The rationale on the image page already explains what it is for, i.e. it is an early (1976) issue illustrating the original Fisk Publishing era of the magazine from 1966-1990, after which it was sold to the current publishers. Nick Cooper (talk) 10:53, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi Nick. The non-free content policy requires us to not use multiple non-free images where one will do the job. This is laid out in WP:NFCC criterion 3a, which states that multiple non-free images should not be used when one would suffice. It also fails criterion 8, because the image does not significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic, and its omission would not be detrimental to that understanding. The second cover does not tell us anything we don't already know. For example, the masthead and layout are nearly identical. The image is not the subject of sourced commentary in the article, and it does not even have a caption. If you disagree, please post your reasons why on the talk page of the image, and the deleting another administrator will review your concerns and take them into account. -- Diannaa (talk) 15:06, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Sneaky Vandal

You said that the sneaky vandal could have been reported at WP:AIV. I did report the vandal to WP:AIV after a constructive IP editor went to the Help Desk. I don't know whether ZAD68 was reading WP:AIV or WP:ANI, but, since Zad68 didn't close the report at WP:ANI, my guess is that he or she was reading WP:AIV. The constructive IP requested that action be taken to prevent further vandalism. Airport article

Take a look at Madurai Airport page. Hi CM. I noticed your name on the file! The substitute image fails our non-free content criteria #1, because it's a non-free photograph, and a free image could be created. The old photo actually fails the NFCC for this reason as well. The way to do this is to take a photo yourself of a phone displaying the desired content (or get permission from the copyright holder via OTRS ticket to display their photo here). Please make sure that the image you upload doesn't include any non-free logos for other corporations (Facebook, Google, what have you) unless they are smudged beyond recognition. Smooth Gaussian-based DelPhi

Diannaa, You recently deleted the Smooth Gaussian-based DelPhi page citing copyright issues as the justification. The bot that had originally marked the page found my lab group's website and papers and thought I was duplicating our own work. I was only adding those equations and descriptions to explain how the software works and did so with authorization from the Principle Investigator in the lab. Hi Johnland11. Normally files with an OTRS pending template are not deleted this quickly. The reason the images had to be deleted was because they didn't have a license tag attached. If and when the OTRS permission is received, the files can be restored, assuming the copyright holder advises us of which license they wish to release the files under. Film Fan

Hi Diannaa. I noticed that you blocked the above user after a long-standing spell of edit waring over film posters, etc. FF's last edit was at 22:52 on October 13. At 09:50 on October 14, an editor called Thebestfeet made their first edit, with an edit pattern very similar to that of Film Fan. These edits include page moves, editing film articles that FF used to edit (Blue is the Warmest Colour, for example) and uploading film posters. I'd like to assume good faith, but I find it hard to believe a brand-new editor would jump straight in with uploading files and page moves. There's a problem with extensive quotations being copyright violations. Here on the English Wikipedia we take copyright concerns quite seriously. I don't edit on the Russia wiki, so I don't know what the standards are there. Copying from other wikis is allowed, as long as proper attribution is given, because although the material is copyright it has been released under a CC-by-SA license. Removing unsourced material is okay; in fact it's a good idea. Sorry for doing a blanket revert; an edit that big is really hard to follow. I suggest you make smaller edits so that people can follow along and better evaluate the changes. Re: Shirer: That's a pretty telling quote and is short enough to include. Please give information about which edition of the book you are using so the citation is verifiable (publisher, publication date, page number, ISBN if it has one). Shirer is great; I have a copy here (in fact I have a second copy, just in case I spill my coffee or some other tragedy befalls the first copy!). Some parts are out of date, but still great. I think you probably are tougher than me, and I thank you for your courage. My greatest fear, in the next fifty years, is that we will forget, and be doomed to repeat. I have bad memories of T4, of the vans, and of the civilians-up-against-the-wall work... but the worst thing they did was staff the camps. And the *worst* thing is why; consider this section, which is straight out of nazipedia.

<redacted> I loved the book, it was a great read and is very similar to Alan Bullock's Hitler: A Study in Tyranny, old and a classic but some of the stuff is dated like you said. I've not used it before but my friend has an account and I've been there when she has edited and she told me for ages to make an account so I finally have done.

Everything requires a citation on this wiki. Since vandals also remove content, it's important to say why you are removing stuff. "Remove unsourced text" works fine when removing unsourced content. Another good option is to try to locate a source for the material, if you are pretty sure it's valid content that should be kept. I've added a link where you said needed cited. I removed a users text of "Nazi Reich distinguished Slavs and Jews from Aryan "race"" because this is not relevant in that section it is not needed to be in the Germanization part of the article and the source was very poor, is this okay to do?

Thanks very much Diannaa I am reading through them now and the Teahouse looks great too! I just changed the source on the William Shirer book on the Reichskommissariat Ukraine and Erich Koch page that I had previously put it on as that edition gave the wrong page and did not tell you the page, I have found another edition with the correct page on it, of course the same book. I added it on the Racial policy of Nazi Germany, does that look okay to you?

Also, may I ask as I can see you know a lot more than me when you want to remove text that is either vandalism or unsourced, what is the best thing to put in the Edit summary?

Foreign races / Foreign nationalists

As you can see I've taken my time to create the new article Foreign races and it is based of the German page but slightly changed and will need expanding and the term though was not always as races but also nationalists such as Slavs or Balts. In the Anti-Slavic sentiment this should be mentioned but not as foreign "races" cause they weren't deemed a foreign race but foreign nationalists and according to the German page German Empire 1933-1945 it states:

A special and professional jurisdiction was henceforth besides the traditional court system for more and more built up areas. Tagging licensed pics for deletion

Hi Dianaa. You left me messages about pics I uploaded[1]. They do come with proof of CC, as linked in the license. The photos come from a Dutch archive, I can't help it the proof is in Dutch ("Alle afbeeldingen met als bron het archief van Beeld en Geluid, zijn te gebruiken onder Creative Commonslicentie naamsvermelding-gelijkdelen"). As far as the Andy Palmer and Annie Anxiety pics are concerned, I uploaded them over five years ago, and at the time the upload form didn't ask me for an URL. I can't provide one now, since the message board where I contacted the photographers (and got the permission) no longer exists. There's no way I can contact the guys now, I wouldn't know where to find them. Asking for proof five years after the event, especially when I wasn't asked for it at the time, is a bit annoying. Even if you were able to provide links to the notice boards where you were given permission, those sites might not exist any more and may never have been archived by the Wayback Machine or other similar archiving services. It was precisely to address this problem that the OTRS ticket system was created in 2006. Getting the copyright holder to send an email to the OTRS team not only protects the copyright holder, it protects the file from deletion, because the proof of permission is kept on file indefinitely. So now it has to be OTRS? Then why (still) ask for a link in the first place? And why wasn't I asked for an OTRS email at the time of upload in 2008? First the upload forms allow me to upload files according to its rules, no problems, and now, five years later, it's suddenly wrong. That doesn't make sense. I'm fed up with this. The rules actually changed in 2006 with the introduction of the OTRS ticket. Whenever you upload someone else's work, an OTRS ticket is needed. Enforcement of copyright on Wikipedia has always been spotty. As you can imagine, there are hundreds, even thousands, of images uploaded every day, and sometimes things don't get noticed right away. Hi 74. The ones with the license in Dutch are the Redbone photos, File:Redbone1971.png and File:Redbone1971 b.png, which are no longer tagged for deletion. The two that he's pissed off about are File:Andypalmer.png and File:Annieanxiety 1986.jpg, which are sourced to photographers named Trunt and Graham Burnett, without any evidence of permission. There's also a discussion at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree files/2013 October 30#File:Yintan sept 2011.png. My grok of the Yintan_sept_2011.png discussion which you linked to is that Yintan is the owner of the photo in question, so clickwrap on their say-so should be binding; Stefan is definitely WP:ABF there, eh, or am I misunderstanding what is going on? As for andy-n-annie, the clickwrap is *still* binding on Yintan, correct? I'm under the distinct impression that you aren't deleting the images because you have a DMCA-takedown-notice in hand, signed by the Burnetts. You're trying to help, just believe you cannot. I'm trying to make sure your specific belief-you-cannot is 100% justified, not just per WP:OTRS_ALWAYS_REQD but also *legally*. Furthermore, as you may have telepathically gathered (sorry stupid inside edit-war joke), I'm pretty familiar with copyright law... mostly for books and software rather than images but the principals are the same... and I *thought* I was pretty dern familiar with WP:COPYVIO stuff, as well. I've seen people try to delete images they uploaded under GFDL, and be denied on principal to avoid setting the poor precedent that the clickwrap is not 100% binding. But you're telling me the clickwrap is nada, copyright anvils are hanging over our heads by a single thread, and without *immediate* OTRS from the Burnetts, the server-farms in Florida will be shut down via contempt-of-court-order within the hour. Well okay... to be fair, you're telling me ... what, exactly? What is it you think we are actually not allowed to do under copyright LAW? We *have* permission, per Yintan's statement. Mark David Chapman photos

Hi there, on 3rd March this year you did a spot of cleanup on this article and I'm just wondering if you know what happened to the images of Chapman as a boy and younger man, it seems they were deleted by someone but I don't know how to find out now on what basis, thought you might know or be able to find out? The image I deleted was File:Markchapmanmugshot.jpg. This particular image was nominated for deletion under speedy deletion criterion F7, with the nominator specifying that the pic failed WP:NFCC #1 and #8. At this point there were two images in the Chapman article, so I moved the one with Chapman and Lennon into the info box at the time I did the deletion. Our non-free content criteria call for minimal use of non-free content, so articles of this type typically only have one non-free image, unless there's an excellent reason to include additional ones. The images of Chapman as a boy and younger man were likely deleted for similar reasons to the mug shot – lack of context (criterion #8), use of multiple images when one would do (criterion #3a), and using non-free images to illustrate something that could be described using prose alone (criterion #1). – Diannaa (talk) 23:04, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

Thanks very much for the reply. I feel that images of the younger Chapman, before he committed any crime and when he was high functioning in work etc, are vital context for the article and the understanding of the crime and related psychopathology. There is also reader feedback, when that was enabled, requesting more pictures. At the moment there isn't in fact one clear picture of Chapman. I know that some Lennon fans are against him having any focus, partly due to the claims that he did it for fame, so that may have had something to do with them disappearing - how do I trace back, is there any way now? The only way I can think of to find the deleted images at this point is to go back through the revisions of the article and look for the file names. There are over 4,000 revisions to the article so I will not be assisting in this effort, as my opinion, informed by our non-free content policy, is that the article should only contain one image. -- Diannaa (talk) 00:34, 7 November 2013 (UTC)

It's impossible to tell you when or why the images were deleted from Wikipedia without knowing what the file names were. The only way I can think of to obtain the file names is to hunt for them in the article revisions. If you think the Chapman article should have a different image from the one that's presently there, I suggest you start a discussion on the talk page of the article and get consensus from other interested editors as to which image should be used. Hello Dianna, I would just like to tell you something. The user Taylor Trescott has nominated the Roads to Vegas and Road to the North Pole image titles that were used in their proper articles. It simply described that the images didn't pass WP:NFCC#8, and I told the user, as a response to keeping the images, that it has to pass it because it shows the title of the episodes. The user replied back saying that there was nothing on the articles that described the images, and it was just a decoration. I replied to the user stating that I would take care of that problem, but I can't do that now until the requests are closed. I would just like to ask you what do you have to say about this. Hi Blurred Lines. Sorry, but I made the decision a while ago not no get involved in the issue of images in the info boxes of TV shows. I am not going to delete them, and I am not going to try to save them. What you need to do to rescue these specific images is to add some sourced commentary to the articles about the images themselves. The photo has been missing for a long time! It was commons:File:Hitler Röhm.jpg, which was deleted from the commons in October 2009. You might consider adding File:Bundesarchiv Bild 146-1982-159-21A, Nürnberg, Reichsparteitag, Hitler und Röhm.jpg, which matches the caption, as it shows Hitler and Röhm in 1933. -- Diannaa (talk) 15:55, 7 November 2013 (UTC)

Please also move the old versions of the file before deletion. The instructions at WP:CSD#F8 tell that you should do this: "All image revisions that meet the first condition have been transferred to Commons as revisions of the Commons copy and properly marked as such." OTRS pending and no licence

I noticed that you deleted File:CarolSudhalter.jpg as F4, mentioning that {{OTRS pending}} was present. Is this really the correct thing to do? An OTRS e-mail may contain a source and licence, so lack of either of those might be repaired when an OTRS volunteer processes the e-mail. When a licence is present, I have noticed that it often is changed into a different licence by the OTRS volunteer who processes the e-mail, and I don't think that a file information page without a copyright tag is very different to one with a wrong copyright tag. I realise that OTRS probably will undelete this file, should a permission statement be sufficient, so it is probably not necessary to undelete it for now. --Stefan2 (talk) 13:28, 11 November 2013 (UTC)

I understand your point, but I am not comfortable with having such images sit here for (potentially) several months with no license. That puts us in a bad position legally. I realise that there could be problems, but I don't see why it would be worse to keep an F11 case for some time than to keep an F4 case. The OTRS team should be promptly deleting files for which no permission has been received in a timely fashion. That's what is supposed to be happening, but it's not, due to a shortage of OTRS volunteers and a shortage of admins, particularly admins working with images. The block was the result of a post at AIV. There was no named account associated with the block. Looking at the talk page, it appears that the length of the block was chosen for the long-term activity of adding certain links to articles without adding any value to the encyclopedia. Undeletion of the seal of the University of California?

Hi Diannaa,
I was wondering if you could un-delete the seal of the University of California at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:University_of_California_Seal.svg which was classified as fair-use. This file was previously used under fair-use for the article University of California, Berkeley. You recently deleted this file because at that time it was an unused non-free media file.
Somebody else uploaded exactly the same seal to commons and currently the commons-file is used in the article University of California, Berkeley. However the person who uploaded it to commons at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:University_of_California_Berkeley_seal.svg incorrectly uploaded it with a wrong license, so the file at commons will soon be deleted since commons cannot accept fair-use images.
If this seal should stay in the Wikipedia-article, we will again need the local fair-use copy.
Therefore I am wondering if you could restore this file, and maybe add it to the infobox at the University of California, Berkeley article.

You seem to be doing quite well on your own. Please continue to give him good reasons on the article talk page as to why the edits don't work. Google books can only take a person so far; what I do to improve an article is to bring books in on intra-library loan. I bring articles up to Good Article status using reliable books by scholars and historians. I can see at least six books on the general topic of Sikhism at amazon.ca, so there's definitely source material out there. Then once the article has been promoted to GA and assessed for completeness and reliability of sources, it becomes stable and easier to maintain. This works on articles on the volatile topic of Nazi Germany so it might work in your field of study too. You might consider dispute resolution venues – one thing I have found that works really well is to file a WP:Request for comment, as these are widely advertised and new editors will be drawn to the talk page to give opinions regarding content questions. Several professional quality images have been deleted, which were added to a rare medical article which previously had no images, uploaded by a new user who had also received a generally unpleasant welcome from wikipedia (see the user's talk page). The section I link to suggests that this user is the copyright owner and is in the process of a ticket for the images. Deletion occurs anyway. Overall result = driving away a new user with skills we need who suddenly realizes s/he has better things to do than jump through arbitrary hoops before arbitrary deadlines. That's a good message. One thing that could have been done better is instead of laying half-a-dozen templates on the user talk, User:Stefan2 could have put one template and then listed the additional files underneath, like this for example. It's important to use one template in my opinion, so as to give all the legal info, but a personal note rather than five or six templates is way friendlier and less overwhelming to the new user. Image deletion

I couldn't find the old thread.

I have restored the article to the version with the images which are now available again [7].

Regarding the other deleted image from hydraulic sinus condensing, removed as you say in 2008 [8], please note that the images were likely a pair. I have not seen the deleted image, but since it is called hscbefore.jpg and the undeleted image was called hscafter.jpg can we please just apply a little common sense and say 1. the same user uploaded these 2 images at the same time, 2. they are likely x-rays of the same patient and 3. the details that were applied to hscafter.jpg likely also apply to hscbefore.jpg. I do not believe this is a true case of missing info, the user probably was just cutting corners and did not count on the blind adherence to arbitrary rules in Wikipedia and commons.

I did not realize deleted images were not lost forever. This is good, but I think it will take some effort to get many of these questionable deletions reversed, but I believe it is possible if more people knew about them and were willing to comment. Lesion (talk) 00:00, 19 November 2013 (UTC)

Moonriddengirl checked most of the user's diffs on this article herself and found nothing. In the diffs I checked, I found some material copied verbatim from the 2010 annual report and removed the material. From a copyright point of view the article is now clean. There's other obvious GA issues, though; in particular there's a lot of dead links that need archive links added, and the material is for the most part three years out of date. (talk page stalker) Very weird error. It displays correctly at full resolution but not when MediaWiki tries to display it on a page. Exiftool reports that the file is configured to display at a size of 150x150 inches (which is way too big). Is this what confuses MediaWiki? The big file also has this setting, and it doesn't display in the history section either. The file File:Paranormal Activity - The Marked Ones 2014 poster.jpg, which you recently uploaded, doesn't have a size in inches in the metadata. --Stefan2 (talk) 20:58, 28 November 2013 (UTC)

What you have to do is get an OTRS ticket in place. What this means is that the copyright holder of the image needs to send an email to the OTRS team giving permission, and releasing the image under license. There's instructions at WP:Consent. Hi Samudrakula. The version you uploaded was 300 x 180 pixels, and the current version is 177 x 197 pixels, the difference being the removal of empty white space on both the left and the right. An Unsettling Personal Attack

Hi fellow editor, I guess some people are showing their true colours. Take a look and this WP:Personal attack here. It is very unsettling. I get Sikh extremists doing this from time to time. I have done, but he is still not engaging. He has a "hit and run" pattern. See the title where I added "Rememberance" and he changed to "Rememberance of God". We've had this discussion as the concept of "Naam" or the "Divine Word" is far wider than just mere rememberance of God. He either doesn't get it or doesn't want to. OK. Thanks. I'm working on a review of the article for John B. Cobb, an American theologian. It's been in the queue for over 3 months now. It's a decent article, but my concern is that the majority of the references are to primary sources written by Cobb himself. In looking at other WP articles for philosophers, it seems that this is not necessarily unusual, but it seems to me to be a problem with WP's No original research policies. Many of the points made in the article are editors' explanations of Cobb's writings. Is this OR? Thanks for your advice. --Jburlinson (talk) 20:28, 8 December 2013 (UTC)

I count around 20 citations to Cobb's own work or the work of his organisations, the Center for Process Studies and the Institute for the Postmodern Development of China. In addition, David Ray Griffin, author of citations #10,14-18, 24, 44-47 (eleven citations), was co-founder with Cobb of the Center for Process Studies and thus is not an independent source. Much of the material in the section "Transdisciplinary work", especially in the subsection "Religious pluralism and interreligious dialogue", appears to be the interpretation of Cobb's work by the editor rather than material found in reliable secondary sources, as there's no footnotes. I suspect there's not enough secondary sources to bring the article up to GA class. The same editor recently had Alfred North Whitehead pass to GA, and it has similar issues but not to the same degree. I'm not sure I would have passed that one either. Our other GA articles on American theologans do not have this problem (Martin Luther King, Jr., John Cotton (minister), Gene Amondson, and Andrew Sledd). -- Diannaa (talk) 23:02, 8 December 2013 (UTC)

I don't think user boxes are supposed to be in main space. They should be moved to User:UBX. Here's how I would do it, loosely based on the instructions provided at Wikipedia:Userbox migration:

1. Copy the contents of each user box page to a new location with a User:UBX prefix. For example, User:Neutralhomer/Userboxes/NYCS 3Train becomes User:UBX/NYCS 3Train. Be sure to provide attribution in the edit summary.
2. For each user box, check "What links here" and amend each transclusion to show the new page name.

That's a pretty broad block there -- I can't checkuser the whole range (many many too many contributions from it for checkuser to handle), but even looking just at contributions from this one sock shows (a) contributions outside the range, and (b) plentiful edits from perfectly good editors, anonymous and otherwise, at that user's one IP address within the range. --jpgordon^{::==( o )} 16:42, 14 December 2013 (UTC)

Help

Is this website a Wikipedia mirror of Kim Hyun-jung (singer), or is the biography section of our article a blatant copyright violation of the website? I suspect it's a mirror because that's the only English in it - the rest is Korean. The article and the SPA editing it are both driving me crazy. I removed what I'm fairly certain is a blatant copyright violation from the lead, warned the user, but they've put it back.--Bbb23 (talk) 20:56, 21 December 2013 (UTC)

The daum.net page has not been archived by the Wayback Machine so I don't have anything to add to Stefan's information. The material from jpopasia.com is a copyright violation. Thank you for sorting all the copyright issues out, but we still have a problem with the article and the user. Even though it turned out not to be a copyright violation, they paid no attention to your warning (or anyone else's). They keep using this very odd edit summary "anti stop action", whatever that means. Also, although Malerooster did remove the unsourced health information, which the user reverted, you (Diannaa) did not, even though you said you did in your edit summary. You removed only the material from jopasia. The user is, among other things, disruptively edit warring with everyone (technically, I reverted 4x, although in good faith I thought the fourth was a copyright violation), but at this point I'm too involved to sanction the user because I was disputing other material as well. The user is removing maintenance templates, adding sources that are Wikipedia mirrors, and restoring promotional garbage - and the article, even without the user's edits, is pretty awful. I got that health info removed now. Things happen too fast, i tell you what!! It looks like the blog is also a Wikipedia mirror, which leaves the article without sources. There's sources on the Korean version but they all appear to be blogs and fansites and wiki-mirrors as well. The awards are unsourced, even on the Korean wiki. Do we know enough at this point to say she's not notable? I think 2013 is the date the accounts were unified, or maybe it's broken, I dunno for sure. Clicking through and looking at edits, I see they date back to 2007. Also, userpage log (기록 목록) takes you to this info: ko:특수:기록/나는우리 which shows the account was created on 9 September 2007. Faiz El-Ghusein

Sorry to bother you with minor admin tasks during Christmas, but: In October you reviewed the image File:Fairiz1.jpg for use in the article Faiz El-Ghusein. You noted that use on other pages or in different contexts may require additional review.

There's now a slow-moving edit war over the use of this image in Witnesses and testimonies of the Armenian Genocide. I'd review it myself but I am not familiar with the basis upon which you made your earlier review - specifically how the image meets the criteria for PD in the US. Any assistance you may be able to provide would be welcome. I have no view on the outcome, just in ending the to-and-fro of reverts over the last week or so. A user marked the image as PD in Syria on December 24. We don't actually have any evidence that the image originated in Syryia so a PD-Syria tag is appropriate. I had marked it as okay for fair use in the biography of Faiz El-Ghusein. Daily Mail

I saw your edit on Adolf Hitler removing a source from the Daily Mail. I know the newspaper has a reputation, but I cannot find anything in the Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard that says it's not a reliable source (though many admit it is WP:BIAS). I do know a few admins remove it as a source from BLPs though. Was there a discussion I am missing that says the Daily Mail is not RS? Thanks! EvergreenFir (talk) 20:59, 27 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi EvergreenFir. It's not the kind of source we can use for contentious or controversial historical material in a Good Article. They are in the business of selling papers, not doing historical research, and have a history of not always being factual. The information it's being used to source in this instance is not backed up by mainstream trusted historians, which in the case of Nazi topics would be historians like Ian Kershaw, Richard J. Evans, and Peter Longerich for example. That's the kind of high-quality material we need to use as sources. Here's some stuff from the recent RSN archives and an interesting collection of news stories about the paper:

• Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard/Archive 105#The Daily Mail?
• Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard/Archive 106#Time to axe the Daily Mail

German Army Anti-Aircraft badge

Howdy. You recently uploaded an image of a German Army Anti-Aircraft badge. It appears there isn't an actual license on the image's page though. Normally, I would just add one, but I'm wondering if the image is PD. I know at least some (if not all) of the military badges for U.S. personnel are PD.
