Roewe (in Chinese: 荣威; in Pinyin: Róngwēi, /ˈroʊvə/ ROH-və, "rone-way", from the British pronunciation of "Rover") is a luxury marque of the Chinese automaker Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) that sells cars based on purchased MG Rover technology.[1]
Roewe is one of only a small number of indigenous brands which currently sell luxury vehicles in China.[2]
History
SAIC purchased technology relating to the Rover 75 and Rover 25 after the 2005 collapse of MG Rover, and the Roewe marque first appeared on a version of the Rover 75, the Roewe 750. Originally intending to purchase all assets of the failed British company, SAIC was outbid by Nanjing Automobile.[3] In 2007 SAIC merged with Nanjing Auto, so it now controls the MG Rover assets, such as the MG name and a Birmingham factory, the Longbridge plant, that it was initially unable to acquire.[4]
Name
The use of name "Roewe" is due to SAIC's inability to buy the Rover name from BMW.[3] The name is thought to have come from the traditional Chinese words Róng and wēi meaning "king" and "power", respectively. Its pronunciation is more similar to "rone-way" than "row-way", although the latter may appear to be the correct way to say the name.
Models
Many Roewe models use Rover 75 or Rover 25 technologies,[5] and Roewe-derived cars are sold outside China under the MG badge.[6]
Roewe 750
The Roewe 750 is a re-badged, long-wheelbase Rover 75.[7] Its drivetrain, based on the Rover KV6 engine, is a 2.5L V6 petrol engine and the gearbox is a brand new 5-speed automatic. Later, a 1.8T (turbo) petrol engine based on the Rover K-series engine, delivering around 150 bhp (112 kW; 152 PS), was introduced. The standard 1.8T version Roewe 750 was priced at 210,000 Yuan (USD$29,000 or £14,500) in January 2008.[8]
Roewe 550
The Roewe 550 debuted at the 2008 Beijing Auto Show and unlike the larger 750 it uses a self-developed automobile platform.[7] The result of a collaboration with consultancy firm Ricardo and SAIC's own car-development team[9] (based in Britain),[citation needed] the 550 re-badged as an MG6 sold in Chile and the UK.[10]
Using a powerplant based on the Rover K series engine, options include a 1.6 litre and 1.8 litre turbocharged petrol and 2.0 litre diesel engines. The 1.8 litre delivers around 150 bhp (112 kW; 152 PS) while the 2.0 litre diesel, which complies with Euro IV emissions regulations, provides similar performance. A hybrid version was shown at the 2010 Beijing Autoshow.[11]
Much the engineering and design work for the car was done in the UK, and MG6 models sold there are assembled from knock-down kits at the MG Longbridge plant.[12]
Roewe 350
The Roewe 350 was launched at the Beijing Auto Show in 2010 with a SAIC-developed 1.5 L engine.[13] Produced at a former Nanjing Automobile production base in Pukou,[14] it is sold as the MG 350 in Chile. The 350 was based on the 2009 Roewe N1 concept car.[15]
Roewe 250
In March 2010 the Roewe 250 was spotted testing in Australia. The car will reportedly be a spiritual successor to the legendary MG Metro and be available as both hatchback and sedan. Power comes from a development of the K-Series petrol engine, and the 250 is based on an all-new front wheel drive automobile platform,[16] although some sources say it uses the Rover 25 platform.[17]
Roewe W5
Roewe launched the W5 at the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show. Based on the Ssangyong Kyron and powered by the same 1.8 L engine seen in the Roewe 550 and 750, it is the first Roewe SUV.[18]
Exports
Chile
In 2008 the Roewe 550 and 750 were launched in Chile under the names MG 550 and MG 750, respectively.[19]
Europe
British car magazine Autocar tested the Roewe 350 in 2010 and it was suggested that the model would be built and sold in the UK, but following the 2011 launch of SAIC's MG 6, imports or manufacturing of Roewe models did not commence as the MG marque was considered more appropriate for European markets.[20]
