== University of Liverpool Logo/Crest ==

Somebody has uploaded an old University of Liverpool crest that is no longer used at all (see www.liverpool.ac.uk).

I have discussed this on the Talk:University of Liverpool page but nobody can replace it.

Can somebody remove this old crest from the page and put it back to normal with the new logo at the top?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Liverpool

This old crest does not represent the university.

Thanks

Protecting my wp account

Hello, I remember seeing something about how to protect your wikipedia account but I can not find the information anymore. The basic idea used some sort of challenge/response or nonce word and a SHA digest. Any clues to what happened to this info? DouglasCalvert (talk) 02:01, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Are you asking about WP:COMMIT? —teb728 t c 02:15, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thats the one! Thank you I tried my hardest but I could not find it. DouglasCalvert (talk) 03:44, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Vector images of trademarks

What is the correct procedure to deal with media in Category:Vector images of trademarks? Nearly all of these images seem to fail WP:NFC Policy 3. b.. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 09:13, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

For the purpose of WP:NFCC#3b the size of an SVG logo is taken to be the rendered size. So the logo should be rendered no larger than is required for the purposes of identification and/or critical commentary. (See {{SVG-Logo}}. The fact that it could be rendered larger is not considered a 3b violation. —teb728 t c 10:25, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
3b says "This rule also applies to the copy in the File: namespace." When I click for example 2000px at File:007.svg I am leaving the File: Namespace, as the 2000px rendering is at http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/7f/007.svg/2000px-007.svg.png. Perhaps this means, it is in fact not a violation. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 10:43, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Article accreditation

Please could I be sent a break down of the accreditation or rating system for Wikipedia becaues it often features in my research and would like to know how to rank the various pieces in relation to other sources I might use. A graduated validation system would be ideal with an explanation of how ratings or attained.

Thanks in advance — Preceding unsigned comment added by Frankylisk (talkcontribs) 09:36, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you are asking about the reliability of information in Wikipedia, it is not reliable at all, but as a matter of policy all information must be verified (or at least verifiable) with a citation to a published reliable source. (And Wikipedia itself may not be used as a source on Wikipedia.) So if you want to validate the information you get from Wikipedia, you go to the sources and validate the information there. —teb728 t c 10:07, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's unfair to add such Allegations/Controversies on a biography when nothing has been proved yet. Article Subrata Roy

In the section "Controversies" of the article "Subrata Roy" there are two different allegations 1. 2G Spectrum Scam and Contempt of Court & 2. Securities and Exchange Board of India Ban

Both cases are still under judiciary and nothing has been proved yet. In contempt of the court case Senior Advocate K K Venugopal said on behalf of the CBI that: “Evidence found till now is insufficient” Reference: http://post.jagran.com/2g-case-cbi-examines-radia-others-in-allegation-against-sahara-1310403191 . In case of SEBI ban, Supreme Court of india on 15th July 2011 granted a stay on market regulator SEBI’s order of June 23, 2011 that ordered Sahara Group companies to return the money raised through optionally fully convertible debentures (OFCD). Reference: http://profit.ndtv.com/news/show/sc-directs-sahara-to-approach-sat-against-sebi-order-on-ofcds-164375 So according to me it is unfair to write about these Allegations/Controversies on a biography when nothing has been proved yet and it should be deleted from this article. I would like to request all contributors to put your views forward on this issue. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.122.14.34 (talk) 11:35, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

They are sourced and notable, I'm afraid. Just please note the wording used. The sections carefully make it a point to say 'allegedly', this is compliant with WP:DUE. Removing them is unhelpful, as that is tantamount to censoring. If you think this might be a guilt by association scenario, it may help if you add other viewpoints of the cases instead. You already have the sources in hand.

Changes to Country Risk wiki page and editing country pages

hi, I am trying to update the "country risk" page which already has information about a survey and wanted to give a better overview of what the survey is about. It was not intended for advertising. Also, I have been unable to add a reference link to country pages about more details on the actual rankings. please advise! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Emresearch6 (talkcontribs) 12:15, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Perusing your contributions, it looks like you are spamming a link across multiple articles. Please do not do that. I would suggest reading our guide to advertising, as that may assist you. TNXMan 13:01, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c) Both the adding of links and your user name suggests you are operating under a conflict of interest. Your actions would appear to me to be reference spamming. I would not recommend you continue as you have, your best bet is to read the guidelines I have linked you to, then if you feel these links add something to an article you can suggest it at the article talk pages (i.e. Talk:Country_risk) and independent/uninvolved editors can add it to the articles if they feel it will contribute. Privacy and Safety

If I have a Wikipedia username, can my IP address still be discovered? I have been targeted before by botnets and am worried that my Wikipedia posts may have been the reason. I have abandoned my old account and have created a new username as a precaution. Did I really need to do that?

If anyone knows about this (really knows, please no guesses) please let me know.

Thanks in advance,

Writeonandon (talk) 12:43, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Only specific, privileged users called checkusers have access to IP data of contributors, and they must identify themselves personally to the Wikimedia Foundation to prevent abuse of the data. So no, no botnet-operator can find your IP address from your username. However, if you ever accidentally edit logged out, you should contact an administrator or oversighter to get the IP hidden. Reaper Eternal (talk) 12:58, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)Registering an account hides your IP address. There are a very limited number of users (called checkusers) that look at your IP info. This is only done, however, if you are suspected of operating multiple accounts contra policy or otherwise abusing Wikipedia. TNXMan 12:59, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Drop of Contributors

I can understand why there is a drop in contributors. So many pages are monitored by someone with a large ego that feels like the own the page. Every time someone updates the page the revert it back, over and over and over again. I just gave up on contributing because it became a waste of time fighting with these people. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.61.148.178 (talk) 12:55, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The editor seems to be sore about their contributions, like this one, being removed. That was removed because items in a list of that sort should be notable and have an article first and then they can be added to such lists. That is one of the provisions of WP:REDLINK. Wonder Man comic book

I looked up "Wonder Man comic book" to look up a copy that I have and it doesn't seem to be included in the bibliography. I own a Wonder Man comic book by Marvel comics that is a first edition is the March 1985 issue. I am not an expert but I believe that this issue is a compilation of previous work and isn't original but was published and sold by marvel comics in 1985. It is possible that this is the reason it was not included in the bibliography.? Either way I feel that I may have a very, very rare comic book since it "does not exist". Confirmation of this fact would be awesome if you could. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.212.147.123 (talk) 15:07, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Making coords visible through infobox

Many infoboxes add coordinates to the top of the article or display them inside the infobox if coords are added. See Stony River Township, Lake County, Minnesota and Epsilon II Archaeological Site for examples: neither of them have any coordinate coding except for those in {{Infobox settlement}} and {{Infobox NRHP}} respectively, but both have the coordinates in the top right corner and underneath the map. To my surprise, entering the "latitude" and "longitude" fields of {{Infobox hospital}} (see Midwest Proton Radiotherapy Institute for an example) only works to produce the map, and using the "coordinates" field produces the coords in the top right corner and displays them in the infobox, but it doesn't produce the map. Any idea how the template could be modified to allow the "coordinates" feature to produce the map or the "latitude" and "longitude" features to display the coords in the infobox and the top right corner? List of Publications critical of the Latter Day Saint movement

Resolved

I would like to add a book to the list of books entitled "List of publications critical of the Latter Day Saint movement." I can't figure out how to do it. When i go to the site and click "Edit" I get a format that doesn't resemble the list itself. How do I add a book to that list?

Ed Bliss <blanked> FriendlyDiscussion (talk) 17:00, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't understand your question. The list is formatted in standard Wikipedia markup language. Just use another book listing in the right section as a model to emulate. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:06, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Considering the context of what he says, I think he is asking how to add a page to a category. LikeLakers2 (talk) 17:10, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
From the user's page, it appears that he is attempting to insert his own book into the list. I'd think that WP:COI might be relevant here. While I'd not make any judgement one way or another regarding the merits of the book, I do have to ask whether the list itself is justified. Are there other 'Lists of publications critical of X' in Wikipedia? AndyTheGrump (talk) 17:13, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
"A Friendly Discussion: Mormonism Pro and Con is a book by Ed Bliss"; he'd inserted a link to this self-published book, and one of our IPs had removed it from the list for obvious reasons. The spamusername account has been blocked. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:27, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Technical help about moving two articles

Resolved

After I have read WP:PRIMARYTOPIC and esspecially the example about Albert Einstein, I need some technical help:

• The disambiguation page "Steinway" should change name to "Steinway (disambiguation)"
• The page "Steinway" should then redirect to the article "Steinway & Sons"

--Peoplefromarizona (talk) 22:17, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree.
I'd like to just do it, but can't, because the dab exists. Therefore, step #1 is, I tagged that for deletion; [2] - in case it has already gone, here's what I added;

{{db|I want to move "Steinway" here, and then make "Steinway" a redir to [[Steinway & Sons]], which I am confident is clear primary topic. See [[Wikipedia:Help_desk#Technical_help_about_moving_two_articles]]. I support that bold suggestion, and would like to perform it per BRD, so I need this one deleting; it has no meaningful hist/content.}}

If that's deleted as per my request, I can do the remainder. Chzz ► 22:57, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's been deleted, so I've done the rest.
The DAB page is now Steinway (disambiguation). And Steinway redirs to Steinway & Sons. Done? Chzz ► 23:06, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It is perfect. Thank you very much. --Peoplefromarizona (talk) 23:09, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Internet Explorer 9 and Firefox 5 renders the same Wikipedia page differently. Do you notice the difference? Marthelati (talk) 05:03, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The rendering difference
edit: I added the thumbnail and right align parameters to your filename because it was WAY too big otherwise. Anyone may click the image to see the fullsize version. --Jayron32 05:12, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
All browsers render pages differently; thats sorta how HTML is supposed to work; the data is going to be handled by an uncountable number of combinations of CPUs, browsers, monitors, cell phones, tablets, etc, so the HTML is designed to be readible and workable in all of those formats; the rendering is handled at the client end (i.e. on YOUR computer). The difference in this case is very subtle, it looks to be mainly a slight difference in font size causes different word wraps. Pay it no mind, it isn't an error or a problem, this is how the internet works. --Jayron32 05:15, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It is time to pay it some mind. The "Search" text in the search box is gray in IE, but solid black in Firefox. Marthelati (talk) 10:37, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please be more direct. Are you implying that one of the search boxes doesn't work? Or that you don't think there should be pre-filled gray text in a working box? Or something else? PrimeHunter (talk) 11:17, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I mean the pre-filled text "Search". Marthelati (talk) 11:38, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you mean that you don't think the pre-filled text should be gray in Internet Explorer then this is common at many sites for text that automatically disappears when something is typed. It is called a textbox watermark. See for example http://v4.dotnettutorials.com/controls/ajax-textbox-watermark-control-tutorial-in-asp-net-using-c/ which says: "The AJAX Textbox Watermark Control is a simple control that allows greyed out text to be displayed over an empty Textbox. It is a very popular control on web forms helping to show people what to place in Textboxes without using Labels. It is a very simple setup, but it makes a site look more professional." PrimeHunter (talk) 13:34, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This time the difference is no longer subtle. The "Password blank" message in Firefox is notably larger than IE's. (IE is in normal font, while Firefox is in large font) Marthelati (talk) 01:08, 7 August 2011 (UTC) (Resign: Marthelati (talk) 01:08, 7 August 2011 (UTC))[reply]

Another rendering difference
So what's your point? Different browsers render pages differently; that's how the internet works. It has nothing to do with Wikipedia. --Orange Mike | Talk 01:22, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bug submitted on MediaZilla as bug #30265 Marthelati (talk) 06:50, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

As we keep telling you, this is normal all over the Internet for browsers with different web browser engines. Please stop reporting these differences when both versions are perfectly readable. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:21, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Add new article

how do I move an article from my user account to main page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Campionplatt (talkcontribs) 03:43, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

See Help:How to move a page for the short version and Wikipedia:Moving a page for the long version, though Wikipedia:So you made a userspace draft is probably more what you need. As an aside, I would NOT move the text currently in your user account to the main namespace; it would pretty much get deleted instantly for this reason. Also see Wikipedia:Notability, which is VERY relevent here. --Jayron32 03:51, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Why is Wikipedia so slow?

I have a large number of edits to do, but I am giving up and going to bed. Every time I hit save, it says "waiting for en.wikipedia.org" and that message stays up for 55 seconds. Did someone forget to feed the squirrels who run in the treadmill which powers the servers? Is there a virus, or is the system broken down? A world class computer project would not have such a delay for every edit. I have a broadband connection, but I might as well have a 300 baud modem (I had one once, and I think things went faster than with the present system.)Edison (talk) 04:21, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like a problem at your end, and not Wikipedia. I, for one, am not having any troubles you are describing, so it doesn't sound like a Wikipedia problem at all. You may want to contact your ISP if this sort of thing continues. --Jayron32 04:26, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Wikipedia actually uses Red pandas for the treadmills, since the feed is cheaper. I have a pathetic connection from a pathetic ISP, but I'm not getting more than a second or two delay. It might just be on your end. Sven Manguard Wha? 04:27, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I thought we used Wikipedians who are enslaved by Jimbo Wales to power it? :P Anyway, I think its more because of all the edits being made at once causing the lag. I mean, I live in Florida, where the enwiki server(s) are supposedly located, and I get a bit of lag. And I have a connection to the internet that is 1.6 MB/s max, according to Steam. You read right, I said MB instead of Mb. LikeLakers2 (talk) 05:05, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The first time I tried I got a message Steven_Zhang kicked Surajt88. The second time I got this: #wikipedia-en-help Cannot join channel (+b) - you are banned. Have you asked Steven Zhang on his talk page? --Jayron32 04:59, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia proper, unfortunately and stupidly enough, has no control over its IRC channels. I've alerted Steven to this thread. That being said, the reason he gave leads me to believe that the boot itself was good, although you might be caught in it for the wrong reason. Sven Manguard Wha? 05:01, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As an op in the channel, I have been dealing with a banned user, Thepoliticalmaster (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) who has been abusing the webchat connection and evading their K-line. Due to the account name (see Category:Suspected Wikipedia sockpuppets of Surasaman) as well as the IP range looking similar, and this user trolling in IRC a lot, I jumped the gun and placed a ban. I have lifted it pending information from a checkuser. Steven Zhang The clock is ticking.... 05:11, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I did not ask him yet as his talk page notified he's offline. Anyway the problem I had is being discussed here. I'll proceed to ask him now. Thanks for the prompt response. Suraj T 05:15, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have discussed with Steven Zhang regarding this issue here. Thanks for the response. Suraj T 05:46, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
My reasons for placing the kick ban were 1) Almost identical username to previous usernames TPM used on wiki in previous accounts, and their email and b) Similar IP range in the web chat when both TPM and and the above user entered the channel. As TPM edited from the UK, it appears at times they have used open proxies to conceal their IP through web chat, and this was the reason for my pre-emptive ban. I unreservedly apologise and of course have lifted the ban. Steven Zhang The clock is ticking.... 05:50, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Foreign language redirects

Is it allowed to create foreign language redirects? What I think of is for example redirecting Erdbeben, which is the German word for earthquake, to the article Earthquake. I looked at WP:RDR but did not find a specific answer. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 11:35, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I would think generally not. The point of a redirect is for plausible search items that someone might enter, and while it is conceivable someone may forget they are at the English Wikipedia and type in a word in another language, I would expect that to be rare, and a mistake. If it were allowed, it would open the floodgates to hundreds of millions of possibilities (3.7 million x number of languages). A possible exception might occur whether the English language word is very close to the foreign word, and both are used commonly. --SPhilbrickT 12:57, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Common sense overrules any policy here. If a foreign word was used a little in the English-speaking world, then this might be appropriate - after all, redirects are cheap. For example, I have seen the word Gedankenexperiment used in Western literature, so it is reasonable to consider someone might search on it.
However, Wikipedia is not a dictionary, and this is the English Wikipedia, so adding redirects from every word, in every language, would be highly disruptive; it would flood searches with terms that were mostly unhelpful.
In the specific case of Erdbeben, I cannot imagine a Western non-specialist publication using the term without explaining it, so I think it an unlikely search-term. It probably would not be deleted if made - Wikipedia:Redirects_for_discussion#When should we delete a redirect? is quite easy-going. But, I don't recommend making it (unless you really do think English-speakers would be searching for it).
There is a semi-related discussion, which contains further comments on the topic, and links to others, here. Chzz ► 13:12, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I routinely come across and do some foreign language redirects myself to biological taxa. Even in countries like ours where English is also one of the official languages, common names for animals and plants in other countries generally do not coincide with American common names. Especially if the taxa are not native to majority English-speaking countries, the local common names (which could also be in English) would then actually have wider usage. Local academic papers are also more likely to use local common names than foreign ones for native or naturalized species. Examples include Nangka, Gumamela, Hagonoy, Siriguelas, Kalabasa, Makopa, Ilang-ilang, etc. But yeah... that's a different matter than 'earthquake' though.-- Obsidin Soul 16:41, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Belly amphora and wierd title

Actually trying to edit an article about Physics I got waylaid checking other articles for information and ended up in Archaic Greece! So, this is how I ended up at Andokides and Andokides painter and, finally, Belly Amphora by the Andokides Painter (Munich 2301).
As this was a link at the bottom of the AP article I was just going to decaps it when I realized it was a WP article, so can some more expert eyes give their opinion, or do something. Firstly, I doubt that the title is a proper wiki title, what with catalogue no. and all, I was going to pagemove to a decappsed version but figured that this title is a no-no. Also it is totally unreffed (added tag) and about 4 times longer than the article on the actual potter, Andokides. And, is it notable? I mean does Wikipedia have articles on this sort of thing, it's not the Venus de Milo or anything. Feedback? CaptainScreebo Parley! 15:11, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It isn't unique. One of the others in Category:Individual ancient Greek vases is Oinochoe by the Shuvalov Painter (Berlin F2414). And the German version of the category not only has those two but 5 or 6 others that are almost that bad. And going from the German to the Greek on one of those articles leads to *quite* a few works of art with that sort of denotative description in parentheses.( el:Κατηγορία:Εθνικό_Αρχαιολογικό_Μουσείο for example.) I'd drop a question on WP:Art and let them know including the fact that it needs references, but I would definitely *not* support either changing the case or deleting it.Naraht (talk) 16:01, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry the case change is obvious, amphora and painter to conform to MoS, I was wondering about the cat ref in the title, appears bizarre to me. And as for other stuff exists, this is no justification for keeping it. CaptainScreebo Parley! 16:58, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I moved it to Belly Amphora.

In the same way, we have an article called Love Me Do. We don't call it Love Me Do by The Beatles (Parlophone R4949). We only add disambiguations where necessary, and I don't know of another "Belly Amphora".

It is, of course, unreferenced and probably original research. Chzz ► 17:42, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm don't like the new title. A "belly amphora" is any amphora having this shape (see eg [3]). The Wikipedia article is about a specific example. -- John of Reading (talk) 17:50, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, well I just wanted to throw some light on it, should be "Belly amphora" btw, but thanks at least for doing something. So is it OR, does it deserve to stay? CaptainScreebo Parley! 18:08, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free

Can I upload media that I created myself and is free content or public domain to Wikipedia and use {{Non-free use rationale}} to fool other that they are non-free? Marthelati (talk) 15:40, 6 August 2011 (UTC) Resign: Marthelati (talk) 15:40, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am not sure this would be possible, as such media would be likely to fail WP:NFC Policy 1.. Furthermore I guess this could get you blocked as a preventive measure (see Wikipedia:Blocking policy#Blocks should be preventative). Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 16:27, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
@Marthelati: More to the point, see WP:POINT. We're here to build a good encyclopedia, not try to pull tricks or "fool people" into thinking anything. If you do not share the goals that Wikipedia has set out, this is not the place for you. --Jayron32 16:35, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
@Marthelati: An additional comment: You say "...that I created myself and is free content...". Unless you do explicitly release that media under a free license, it is in fact NOT free content, as you hold the copyright for it. You could of course add your own non-free media to an article on Wikipedia, if you can demonstrate it satisfies Wikipedias Non-free content policy (see WP:NFC#Policy). Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 17:11, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think that is true. See Wikipedia:Image use policy#User-created images, which says, "All user-created images must be licensed under a free license, such as the GFDL and/or an acceptable Creative Commons license, or released into the public domain, which removes all copyright and licensing restrictions." —Bkell (talk) 17:16, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well, what I said above is true. Wikipedia cannot force anybody to release their own content under a free license. If I create an image and choose, not to release it under a free license, I can still use it if it satisfies Wikipedias non-free content policy. Of course Wikipedia encourages users to create free content, as we want to build a free encyclopedia. If I choose not to do this, then it will not count as "user-created image", although (technically) it is. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 17:25, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That's a strange interpretation of the phrase "user-created image". If you are interpreting "user-created image" to mean "a freely-licensed image created by a Wikipedia user", then that sentence from the image use policy is meaningless. —Bkell (talk) 17:37, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In the sense of Wikipedia, a "user-created image" is always released under a free license. An image that I create myself, however, is not necessarily a "user-created image". Note that "user-created image" in the sense in which Wikipedia uses the term is not identical to the inherent meaning of the term. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 17:49, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Again, if that's the case, then that sentence from the image use policy is meaningless. Why does the image use policy say, "All user-created images must be licensed under a free license…"? If the phrase "user-created image" is to be interpreted to mean a freely-licensed image, then all that sentence says is, "All freely-licensed images must be licensed under a free license," so what's the point? —Bkell (talk) 17:55, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is the word must. All images which I create myself AND release under a free license are (by the definition) user created images. However, how would Wikipedia force me to release my images under a free license? If I choose indeed not to do this, it is no longer a "user-created image", but I am still able to use my own image under WP:NFC, provided I am able to include a valid rationale. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 18:26, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, certainly Wikipedia cannot force you to release your image under a free license. However, Wikipedia can refuse to accept contributions from you that are not freely licensed. I think that is what the sentence from the image use policy is saying. Your interpretation of the phrase "user-created image" makes the sentence from the image use policy nonsensical (or at best tautological), so it is difficult for me to accept that interpretation as valid. Can you point me to a page explaining that the phrase "user-created image" means what you say it means? Otherwise I am strongly inclined to interpret "user-created image" to mean "an image created by a user", which is clearly what the words themselves are saying, and which would make this sentence I've quoted from the image use policy meaningful. —Bkell (talk) 18:35, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Why should Wikipedia refuse my contribution, if I can provide a valid rationale? Per the phrase "Wikipedia encourages users to upload their own images. All user-created images must be licensed under a free license." at WP:IUP#User-created images, a user created image is one that the user uploaded himself under a free license. That means, Wikipedia prohibits users to upload their own images under any other than a free license, but that does not prohibit one to use ones own images in accordance with WP:NFC. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 18:54, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've started a discussion about this at Wikipedia talk:Image use policy#"All user-created images must be licensed under a free license", which seems to be a more appropriate venue and where it will hopefully draw discussion from a wider group of contributors. —Bkell (talk) 21:46, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If you do not wish to release the full resolution/high quality image to the public, a possible workaround is to upload a lower resolution/lower quality/portion image of it and release it for free. That way you still retain copyright to the larger original image.-- Obsidin Soul 17:58, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
• I love this idea - yes of course you could offer your pictures under a non free license, there is a lot of support in a section of users for non free pictures being better than nothing/completely acceptable - (although this is against the foundations objective as regards commons compatible files) and what have you lost if the picture is deleted, nothing. As Obsidian soul also suggests - release in as a thumbnail. - this will not devalue your image and yet promote it through non free use and high profile viewing figures via wikipeidia, this may also result in increasing the copyright value and profile of your pictures. Exact copying from Government forms OK?

Let's say that the US Federal Government puts out a new 1040-Q tax form to be used only by people for whom both parents have worked as Clowns in the United States. The Instructions sheet for the 1040-Q lists in bulletpoint fashion, what must be true for those filing a 1040-Q form. Is it OK to copy that information directly to IRS tax forms or must some effort be made to rephrase? Similarly if there is prose description of why those people should fill out a 1040-Q form, would that be acceptible to include? I'm trying to get a limit on how much text (if phrased appropriately for the article) can be copied. I know that there aren't copyright issues, but how much text would be reasonable? I guess if it is *huge* it could go to Wikisource, right?Naraht (talk) 16:46, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

As a form of quotation, WP:QUOTEFARM applies. The 'reasonable amount' would be, whatever helped understanding for the topic - and would be somewhat dependent on the non-copied content (ie, in proportion) - for example, in almost all cases, the lyrics of a song or words of a poem are not considered acceptable but, in a long article which analyses each line, it can be - e.g. I think Kubla Khan is OK.
Most important is, that Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information.
From the sounds of your question, it'd be very excessive to quote the whole thing; instead, we should describe the tax, with reference to independent sources. "Do not base articles entirely on primary sources." - WP:PSTS. HTH, Chzz ► 17:32, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You're talking about content that might well be violative of WP:NOT#HOWTO, since we are not interested in hosting a tax manual in Wikipedia. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:50, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, tax manuals were the first thing that I thought of. The *real* reason I asked the question is at Social security number, the last part of Structure on the effects of SSN randomization appears to be identical (other than shifting from bullets to numbers) to the words in the referenced page on socialsecurity.gov. It is about 6-7 lines all told. Keep as it is, or do we need to rephrase/reduce?Naraht (talk) 21:24, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It's public-domain text, so no problem there. I don't think it's particularly excessive, in that case; it could be re-worded. One thing needs fixing - the tense; it says, SSN randomization will affect, It will eliminate - but apparently has already happened, back in June. Chzz ► 18:37, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

publishing a specialized resume

Hi all,

I was wondering if it's possible to publish a spicialized resume or curriculum vitae about myself.

I am a scientist dealing with atmospheric chemistry and climate change. I would like to put attention on the different steps I had to go trough to get a global knowledge for understanding the main phenomena behind atmospheric chemistry. It is not possible to get formation on that matter in only one institute, but it is necessary to know how several research worldwide groups work on the subject. I studied and worked in Italy, Switzerland, USA and Belgium to learn and get my knowledge on the matter.

I am a clear example of multitask and interdisciplinary scientist who wants to explore all sides of environmental physical-chemistry. With my ever increasing knowledge in experimental work, satellite remote sensing, general modeling and European Policies for air pollution, I’m contributing to the international scientific literature in these fields.

My determination in the achievement of goals could be taken as a precious example for most of people working in scientific fields.Karafede (talk) 21:30, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am making it a point because, I was heavily involved in this project and the credits on the record include my name on several songs as Producer. "Piru Love" is most noteable.FYI there are no samples only "inspired by" creations on each title. I know because I was a featured musician on the majority of the record. THE SCENARIO OF THE DEPOSIT COLLECTORS IN INDIAN BANKS.

Extended content
THE SCENARIO OF THE DEPOSIT COLLECTORS IN INDIAN BANKS

This scheme was introduced in INDIA in 1915 in SYNDICATE BANK BY PAYING Rs.3.5% commission on collections to the collection agents. The collections agent should be retired employee from the government service. But the banks recruited youngsters for promotion scheme besides for bank business promotion. Later the same scheme was introduced in the various banks of the industry. In the year of 1980 due to a dispute between the banks and the deposit collectors the same matter was referred to the INDUSTRIAL TRIBUNAL, Hyderabad. The deposit collectors was represented for workman status with Rs.750/- wage per month as per the scales prevailing on that date in BHEL: HYDERABAD in Andhra Pradesh and 15 days of salary per year as gratuity (to be calculated on the commission earned at the time of retirement in that year) (Important portion of the Award Enclosed). In the early years i.e. at the age of 20/30 years earning is higher and at the old age due to health the same collections are not done by the said deposit collectors hence the gratuity comes very less amount. The Bank Clerks are drawing Rs.450/- (approximately) salary per month (1980). The Tribunal declared an award declaring the deposit collectors as workmen under Industrial Dispute Act. With Rs.750/- salary per month (Minimum collection of Rs.7,500/-) + 2% commission on and above of Rs.7500/- plus conveyance allowance. AT the time of declaration of award the banks are paying at a flat rate of 3% to 3.5% commission on the collections made by the deposit collectors.

Collection
amount COMMISSION
(in Rs.)

Before the Tribunal Award @ 3% After the Tribunal award

First 1 lac 3,000 2,700
Above the 1 lac 3% not changed i.e. 3,000 2,000

With the judgment of the award the collectors are getting a loss of Rs.300/- for first 1 lac. collection and loosing Rs.1,000/- for every 1 lac. Collections after the 1st 1 lac collections. AT the same time the Regular employees are getting their salaries for every four years by wage settlement in the Banking Industry. As on date the Bank Clerk’s salary is minimum nearly Rs.10,000/-. The All India Banking Employees Union extended their affiliation to the deposit collectors for the welfare of the deposit collectors after the Tribunal award in 1988. From 1988 the said union has not done any favor to the deposit collectors. In the Banking Industry where a person has worked for a minimum of 180 days or more, they are offered as sweepers and sub staff. As we are working for the last 31 years (taking the year of case referred to the Tribunal) no one has given the chances for the regular employment into the Banking Industry from the deposit collectors, these things are made by & with the help of the said union/unions. The said union has not done any favor to us for absorption of regular employees as we are covered under Industrial Dispute act. But some banks at their own discretion with out the involvement of the said union {Private & Public sector (State Bank of Travancore)} has taken the deposit collectors as sub-staff and clerk cum cashiers as per their qualifications. The Tribunal award was challenged at High Court of Andhra Pradesh and Supreme Court of India by the Indian Bankers Association. The workmen status was given to the deposit collectors by the both Higher Judiciaries. But the same was now in the CGIT, New Delhi and on process of cross examination stage and waiting for the judgment by the CGIT. STATE BANK OF HYDERABAD has not implemented the said judgement (after the decision of the Supreme Court of India all the banks has implemented) until this date and harassing the deposit collectors for closure of scheme in the said bank. In this Bank in the month of January/Febraury 2005 the deposit collector of BHADRACHALAM (Andhra Pradesh) branch has attempted suicide in the branch premises before all the staff members and the same was informed to the High Court of Andhra Pradesh and the branch manager was served a notice to attend before the court. The bank union members has made pressure on the deposit collector to with draw the case from the court. The said same conditions are now in this bank. The said bank is not issuing the any circular not to open the new a/c.s and simply asking the agents to do so to close the scheme and step out all the agents from the bank themselves. In SYNDICATE BANK in the year of 2010 at UTUKURU (Nellore District, Andhra Pradesh) the deposit collector had attempted suicide and found dead by keeping two letter in the pocket of the Agent explaining the matter of harassment by the branch manager of Utukuru Branch, Syndicate Bank. (The press clipping enclosed herewith) In VIJAYA BANK the depositors are offered 2% rate of interest for the deposits made by the depositors for this scheme. If the depositor want to avail the deposit loan on the daily deposit the loan interest 12.5% will be charged to the depositor for his loan amount. Similarly for general deposits 2% extra will be charged on the prevailing deposit interest rate. This is also one way of the banking industry to send out all the deposit collectors without saying anything. Considering the facts I request your kind enough to consider raising inflation year by year since 1980, as the wage Rs.750/- is fixed in the year of 1988 by the tribunal award accoriding the to the index of 1980. Now the banking industry in need of human resource if we are given a chance for absorption of regular employees some of the families will enjoy the fruits of Industrial Tribunal.

Feature at WP:UTN not working

At WP:UTN#Multi-level templates it says beneath the contents box "Hover over the template syntax to see a summary of the contents." At least for me, this does not work. Do I need to have some additional software installed for this or do something else in order to see it? If this is the case, then shouldn't that fact be mentioned there? Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 12:21, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm. The hover over text for {{tltts}} (and for {{tltts3}} does not seem to be working anywhere. I know that they worked at at one time because I created tltts3 just for use at WP:UTN, have added templates there multiple times, and I remember checking the hover over text I'd written for accuracy.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:36, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It works for me when I hover over "{{" or "}}", but not over "subst:" or the template name. I guess this is what was meant by "Hover over the template syntax", but it sounds unclear. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:50, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Template:Tltt#Known problems says: "On some systems, the text only displays when user hovers over the curly braces, not over the link itself." PrimeHunter (talk) 12:53, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Hovering over "{{" or "}}" it works for me too. I simply interpreted "template syntax" as meaning the whole expression with the curly brackets, such as {{subst:uw-vandalism1}}, so I was tempted to place my cursor on the word and not the surroinding brackets. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 12:57, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Aha, I was using a different browser last I checked these templates.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 13:22, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have investigated further. In all 4 tested browsers (IE, Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera), if I'm logged out, or logged in without Navigation popups enabled at Special:Preferences#preftab-9, then I only see the text when hovering over the curly brackets. If I enable Navigation popups then I also see the text (in addition to the popup) when I hover over the linked template name. A 2007 edit [5] changed the text from "Tip: Hover over the curly braces to see a description of the template." to "Hover over the template syntax to see a summary of the contents." Unless I'm missing something, I think it should be changed to say "curly braces" again. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:53, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Agree, it should be changed back. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 15:56, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have changed it to "Hover over the curly braces to see a summary of the contents.".[6] PrimeHunter (talk) 16:14, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Display of Wikipedia on my laptop

Hi Not sure what happened recently, but all of a sudden the display of Wikipedia on my laptop appears like 'plain text' - can anyone help please? I would like to know what setting I can change to reflect it in a better view (rich text). Thanks! Renier

You don't mention what browser you use or, though it's a less likely culprit, what operating system. Things you could try though is seeing if you've changed some setting in your browser's preferences, in Firefox hit Ctrl and the zero key to bring the text size back to normal, or clear your cache. Correcting instructions

Instructions are given about how to correct articles, but not about correcting Wiki 'instructions'. For example, we sometimes see the message "This article may require cleanup... (Consider using more specific clean up..." This should be "cleanup", but I don't know how to indicate this error. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dpkipling (talkcontribs) .

The message comes from a template. If you click "edit this page" then you will see code like {{Cleanup}} where the text is displayed, and a link like Template:Cleanup near the bottom of the window. You can suggest a change to the message at Template talk:Cleanup. English is my second language and I'm not sure whether "cleanup" or "clean up" is best in this case. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:10, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
English is a second language for me too, but according to Wiktionary, cleanup is a noun, while clean up is a verb. In the phrase "Consider using more specific clean up instructions", cleanup seems to be a Gerund, so I think you are correct. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 15:44, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Mmh, it is not a gerund, as it does not end with -ing. I am not sure what this form is actually called. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 16:05, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Infinitive. (Or, infinitive + adverb, if you like, forming an 'infinitive phrase'. But, really, just "infinitive") Chzz ► 18:21, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please see Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2010 August 19#Wikipedia article Featured in most Languages. There's also Wikipedia:Wikipedia records#Languages, though if I remember correctly, that record was updated as a result of the prior help desk discussion (after it moved to my talk page). The long and short of it is that for featured articles, it appears to be Julius Caesar with 13 FA stars (it's also a good article at five other language Wikipedias). Note that it used to be featured here but was delisted in 2005. For the article with the most, that is featured on the English Wikipedia, it appears to be Moon with 11 FA stars total.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 16:42, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

University of Liverpool - Incorrect Crest

I hope somebody is able to help me....

Recently, the new University of Liverpool logo was replaced with the old university crest just because the user preferred that crest to the new one (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Liverpool)

This does not truly reflect the university as the old crest is no longer used at all - not on the website, degree certificate etc. I am a graduate of the university and therefore I'm aware of the old crest being entirely replaced.

The page was fine before a user replaced the new logo with the old crest.

Is somebody able to remove the old crest and move the new logo back up to the top which is a much more recognisable and clearer representation of the university?

Please visit www.liverpool.ac.uk for clarification.

Can anyone help please?

Thanks

Hi There,

I have an extensive collection of very old postcards (1900-1940) I often research Wikipedia for information especially for postcards of people. Quiet often I go to the page and see no picture posted there of the subject and I have one which I would more than gladly upload to the page if I knew how to?? I know I need certain privaliges but I think I could help out with some of the pictures I have. For instance, I just looked for THE MAHARAJAH OF BIKANIR. Although he wasn't directly in Wikipedia the region of Bikanir was. I have a great picture of THE MAHARAJAH OF BIKANIR taken in 1910 which I would like to give to Wikipedia(upload?) I am sure I could enhance your site on many occasions.

I believe, from my reading of Commons:Commons:Licencing#India, that would be classed as a "public domain" image - hence, yes, we could use it.
You can upload it quite easily, over at the Commons upload form, and in the 'permission' box put {{PD-India}} - exactly like that, within double-squiggly-brackets.
Fill everything else in as best you can. If you have trouble, ask again here. Thanks! Chzz ► 22:35, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Italicize species title

I want the title of two articles that I started - Philanthaxia pseudoaenea and Trichogramma evanescens - italicized, but I don't know how to. Joe Chill (talk) 01:03, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You can use the template, {{italictitle}}. LadyofShalott 01:05, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I was looking through some species articles that I started that are stubs and Start Class that are italicized so maybe I forgot all about it or other members added the template. I actually thought that adding italics could italicize the title. Joe Chill (talk) 01:10, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The other thing is using a taxobox. I think unless another name (such as a common name) is listed in the taxobox, it takes care of it. It's good to use a taxobox when it's relevant anyway. LadyofShalott 01:13, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I was going to add a taxobox for Philanthaxia pseudoaenea, but I'm not sure about how to go about it when I don't know who actually discovered it. I looked at two news articles about the big discovery of four beetle species, but they don't mention who discovered them or if there was only one discoverer. Is it ok to add a taxobox without that information? Joe Chill (talk) 01:17, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, just put in what you do know, and leave the fields you don't blank. LadyofShalott 01:21, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Also note that you need to explicitly italicize the binomen in manual taxoboxes. If you use an {{Automatic taxobox}} (or {{Speciesbox}} for species articles), the titles and relevant fields are automatically italicized for species and genera. I suggest you look into that. Though be warned, it can be thoroughly confusing for a beginner, if it's too much, stick with manual taxoboxes.
I have also added the authors for P. pseudoaenea - Bílý & Nakládal, 2011. Also note that the person(s) who discover them are not necessarily the authors. The authors are the person(s) who first publish a description and a valid name of them in an academic paper. See Author citation (zoology). -- Obsidin Soul 06:23, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

What do I need to create a new Church page?

I would like to know if there are any circumstances for creating a Church's page. Does the church need to be on a National Historic Places page or does it need to have a historic person/event with it?Ltlane777 (talk) 02:06, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It is pretty easy, you need to have reliable sources. The sources need to be independent of the church and provide significant coverage. If there are newspaper articles about the church that would work. The church does not need to be listed on the NHR and have a historical person/event with it. You might want to look at, WP:Notability, this gives more information about how to determine if something is considered notable enough to have an article. Set an upper limit for the rendering resolution of uploaded images

Is it possible to set an upper bound for available sizes an .svg image is rendered as PNG? The concrete example in question is File:University of Chicago Modern Etched Seal 1.svg. While I think the resolution of 500px is fine to illustrate the intricate details in the image, having this image rendered at a resolution of 2000px is not needed in my opinion and is a violation of WP:NFC Policy 3 b. Is it possible to restrict the rendering choices for the file to a maximum of 500px and if so, how can I do this? Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 08:44, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That's an interesting question. I think I saw it raised
here and
here without a clear answer.
Graeme Bartlett said "There was a previous discussion on .SVG logos where it was decided they could be kept." but he then linked to this discussion which doesn't sound definitive.

and this one
I haven't yet read all the contents, but I didn't see anything that struck me as a clear guideline.--SPhilbrickT 12:04, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Having read a bit more, my guess is no, but that's an inference, on the assumption that if it were possible, someone would have suggested it. That's not a completely satisfactory answer, but the experts at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) are probably best equipped to answer your specific question. As an aside, while one summary of the discussion concluded that they could be used, I read it differently, and thought the consensus was opposed.--SPhilbrickT 12:22, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your efforts, Sphilbrick. I think I will bring it up at WP:VPT or perhaps ask a specific user whom I know to be very competent regarding technical aspects. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 12:31, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's not possible to 'code' a size limitation into an SVG, because it is just made up of shapes; hence, if the svg is available to display, anyone could download it and display/use it at any resolution they wanted. We could stop mediawiki from having the 'display at 2000px' option, but that isn't really solving anything. It's the way an SVG works; it doesn't have a 'size' - just shapes, which can be displayed at any res you wish. Chzz ► 13:31, 8 August 2011 (UTC) I'll copy this cmt to the VPT thread, but I'll leave it here too Chzz ► 13:34, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, if that's not possible, the only two options I see would be to either recreate the image at a lower resolution or remove it from the article since this is a 3b violation. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 13:42, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

When you leave messages, please remember to "sign" your name, by putting ~~~~ (four tilde signs) at the end. This will add your name, and the date and time. You can also do this by clicking the 'sign' button, pictured to the right.
The heading boxes you described are called Template messages. The first was {{nofootnotes}}, the second was {{refimproveBLP}}.
Anyone can add, or remove, such messages; they're designed to aid other editors, showing what improvements are necessary - and therefore shouldn't be removed unless the issues are resolved.
However, in the case of that specific article, this is now moot, as there is a deletion discussion under-way here, so comments about the referencing should be made in that discussion. Chzz ► 13:10, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Interstate highways exit lists

In reference to articles about Interstate highways in the U.S.: In the exit lists, the "destinations" column usually indicates the locations marked on the highway's signs. Some of these destinations are red links because they are small communities or parts of municipalities. Because they have no official politcal designation (borough, city, township or whatever) and their size, they are unlikely to ever have Wikipedia articles. Should they be left as red links anyway, pipe-linked to the actual municipality they are in, or have their links removed. Note that pipe-linking in some (but not all) cases would link to the same community listed in the "location" column, if that makes a difference in determining what to do. Thank you. — Michael J 14:47, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please give links to a couple of examples? Thanks, Chzz ► 14:49, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Certainly. See the list on Interstate 81 in Pennsylvania, for example. (This one I know for certain because I live in the area, but can be verified by detailed state-published maps, etc. There are others I question, but will look them up.) Exit 201 is located in Scott Township, and its destination is East Benton, which is in Benton Township. Exit 202 is in Benton Township, as is one of its destinations, Fleetville, but Tompkinsville is in Scott Township. (By the way, Tomkinsville is misspelled; I will fix that.) None of these villages — East Benton, Fleetville or Tompkinsville — is notable enough for an article, but the townships which include them already have articles. Thank you. — Michael J 15:27, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. First, a caveat: I'm not American, and I do not honestly know, for sure, if there is any chance that an article on e.g. "East Benton" is beyond reasonable possibility of meeting notability requirements. So - assuming that it isn't, for the purposes of helping here, and taking that one as an example;
The relevent portion of the page regarding junction 201, is;
{{Jct|state=PA|PA|438|city1=East Benton}}

PA 438 – East Benton

That's using Template:Jct which, when provided with a city1, auto-links.
As "East Benton" is not that type of destination, I suggest changing it to use the "location1" parameter instead, which will not link - viz.
{{Jct|state=PA|PA|438|location1=East Benton}}

PA 438 – East Benton

I also suggest that East Benson should probably actually exist, as a redirect to Benton Township, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. I still would not advise linking it in the table on Interstate 81 in Pennsylvania though, because of the link to Benton Township in the other column.
IMHO, YMMV, HTH, and all that. There might, somewhere, be some style-guide that elaborates. And/or others might have alternative views about the potential of the link/s. If you think it'd be a bit too bold to modify lots of them, you could always start a discussion on the articles talk, and give it some days to see if anyone screams. Thank you Chzz and Gfoley. I think for the moment I will leave the list as is. (I did not know we had a MOS:RJL!) There are no inaccuracies in the list, and I'm not about to redirect every little village to its apporpriate township. Also, while I said that articles for those villages are unlikely, they are actual places, and I suppose someone could someday come up with enough information for an article. And according to my inerpretation of WP:RED, they should be left as such. Thanks again! — Michael J 21:30, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Talk page problems

Help! I'm receiving several new talk page messages (all about marking articles for deletion), and they appear in the edit text box but not on the page. What's wrong? --Nathan2055talk 15:39, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Someone had put in the string <ref>, but without enclosing it in nowiki tags, hence everything subsequently was being treated as being part of a reference. I think I've sorted it, including adding the various signatures that didn't get accepted. - David Biddulph (talk) 15:58, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You can usually find the position of such a problem by searching the edit box for the last visible text on the rendered page. In this case [7] it was "in-text citations using". As David Biddulph found, it was followed by a <ref> which was not in nowiki tags. In articles the problem is often that a starting <ref> is missing the ending </ref>. Older dumps of Italian Wikipedia

Me and my university professor had an idea for my final thesis in Italian Linguistics: study lexical development of Italian language on the basis of Italian Wikipedia. So I was going to download one of the latest and one of the oldest dumps and compare them. The problem is the oldest dump of Italian Wiki I find is from 2010. Is there any way to get older versions now? Of at least 2005-2006? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.54.172.110 (talkcontribs) 15:54, 8 August 2011

I guess you're looking in http://dumps.wikimedia.org/itwiki/ - if you look at 'latest', there are two types of dumps.
The files with "current" in the filename only have the most recent version of the pages, but those with "history" contains the complete page edit history. You will probably want itwiki-latest-pages-meta-history.xml<.whatever-format> Using that, you could analyse page content from any date you wanted.
There is some further information on meta:Data dumps. As this is rather technical, and not related to the English Wikipedia, you are more likely to get appropriate help in the IRC channel #mediawiki connect. Best of luck, Chzz ► 16:20, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Impossible unicode combination?

Hi. I'm trying to replicate a symbol that is used in the shipping industry. It is a maltese cross with a filled-in circle over it, as shown here and on page 5 of this document.

• I can make the maltese cross ✥ with ✥
• and I can add the combining diacritical mark to other characters "å", like this:å
• but when I try to combine them with ✥̊ i see a box with a circle over it: ✥̊

Any ideas? Thanks. HausTalk 19:25, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Because you are adding the diacritical mark to the maltese cross. I don't see the box, so the problem must be with your browser's rendering of the unicode. I see a maltese cross with a little circle above it.--Jayron32 20:07, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)I can't seem to make it work. Have you tried alt codes? I noticed that the maltese cross on the DNV page was an image instead of a normal character. Ryan Vesey Review me! 20:09, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I tried a few browsers on 2 operating systems: Google chrome on windows was the only on I tried that it didn't render on. Thanks for the help! HausTalk 20:18, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The above doesn't work for me, on Firefox 5.0; the dot appears at the top-right like the little circle that comes after some Japanese characters, such as . It looks like this. I tried a few diacritic things, but can't get anything to work; even if it did, it might not be consistent.
I think it'd be far better to use a small inline symbol - just like I did above, for that Japanese character. I could've used the unicode symbol ぽ but, that might not work for all users.
You might want to ask for an SVG to be made, over at the Wikipedia:Graphic Lab. It's probably best to copy it from this DNV PDF, because at least we can zoom in on that one.
BTW, 10021 (✥) is not called a Maltese cross, it's a "four club-spoked asterisk". 10016 (✠) is called a "Maltese cross" in unicode tables - despite, as far as I can see, looking nothing like one. DNV call it that, so meh. Chzz ► 21:42, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your help. I think the right thing to do is to make a svg for the moment, but call the thing from a template. That way, x years from now, when the glyphs consistently display correctly, it can be changed in one place. I'm no artist, but " bla bla bla bla bla bla" seems close enough for rock and roll. HausTalk 22:38, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I agree with both comments. That image looks fine, and it's worth being a template too. Chzz ► 23:53, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I am quite sure that was the point, but wouldn't it be better to post this on the talk pages of articles and/or Wikiprojects where it will find the people who are most likely to make good use of it? Or better yet, just update the references oneself. Posting the above fact here is probably the second least likely way to fix the problem (the least likely being "do nothing")There are billions of references in Wikipedia articles, and some non-trivial number of them go dead every day. It isn't that people shouldn't be notified of dead links, but this particular forum isn't exactly the best place to do that. --Jayron32 20:21, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Are you talking about the rating box at the bottom of the article or the rating that is on the talk page for whatever WikiProject has rated it? And it always helps if you tell us what the article is instead of being vague. Dismas|(talk) 02:26, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Talk page ratings are called "assessments" and instructions for their use are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Assessment FAQ. --Jayron32 03:11, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No, they are completely separate. As for the talk page ratings...
• If you're referring to the article being a good article at one point, you can follow the link in the notice to have it reassessed.
• If you're referring to the France WikiProject rating, you can re-assess the article yourself if you feel it's justified. Their assessment guidelines are here.
• If you're referring to the Sports WikiProject and their assessment, it's the same as with France and their guidelines are here.
I hope this helped! Dismas|(talk) 03:16, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The "Rate this page" feature at the bottom of articles is for all readers and unrelated to the WikiProject rating on the talk page. You should usually sign up as member of a WikiProject before rating articles for it. Look for rating information at the WikiProject such as Wikipedia:WikiProject France/Assessment and Template:WikiProject Sports. Click the "Edit" tab at top of the article talk page and set the rating with code like {{WikiProject Sports|class=b|importance=Mid}}. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:21, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I meant cast a vote (I dont just want to go ahead and change it based on my opinion, is there another way how?) on the Sports WikiProject "(Rated B-class, Mid-importance)". mystery (talk) 03:32, August 8th, 2011 (UTC)
Wikipedia has around 3.7 million articles and a WikiProject rating only displayed on a talk page isn't considered important enough to spend time on a vote. Featured and good articles have icons on the article page, and there is a nomination procedure for them. Other ratings are mainly just meant as a tool for the WikiProject members. See also Wikipedia:WikiProject Sports/Assessment#FAQ. PrimeHunter (talk) 04:11, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) No one votes on those talk page assessments. They are determined when an editor, in good faith, reads the article and applies the standards layed out at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Assessment FAQ. The ratings are not determined by vote. Please read Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Assessment FAQ and look at what each grade means, if you disagree with the ratings of a current article, you may change it yourself, if you can explain on the talk page why you are changing it. But it has nothing to do with voting. --Jayron32 04:13, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Vandal editors

How do one make a complaint about an editor, that is clearly vandalizing the topic by not allowing changes to the article. Imagine that the article state 2+2=5. Obviously this would call for a change, but the editor will not allow this. After much discussion, it has not been possible to have 2+2 be 4 instead of 5. What can be done, if an editor is the vandal, corrupting the data of an article?

Pethol (talk) 08:14, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It depends.
In the case of a user changing "2+2=4" to "2+2=5", that would be considered vandalism. Thus, the user could be warned and if they persisted, reported on WP:AIV.
However, most disputes are not so clear-cut, such as, the associations of chinese characters [8]. Note the section in the VANDAL link, regarding What is not vandalism. In that type of case, it is necessary to try and form a consensus through discussion on the talk page. If an agreement cannot be made, there are dispute resolution processes. If any editor does not abide by consensus, or keeps insisting on their preferred version without awaiting agreement, then we're back to warn/block.
If you have a specific concern, see the suggestions on Wikipedia:Dispute resolution#Resolving content disputes.
Please note that, in any discussion, you should comment on the content and not comment on other editors (as you did, here). Chzz ► 08:25, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If the problem is an incompetent editor, then it is not at all wrong to comment on that persons professional ability.... Provided you're in a professional environment, where people welcome criticism in order to be able to correct the errors.

I presented evidence of one of my claims, and my comment with evidence was removed. That means that the editor is not fit to be seated in that position. It should not be wrong for the users to be able to "vote out" a bad editor and get a replacement. The editors are supposed to be there as a service to the users, not as a pain in the butt. Katharine's son?

The question is in the headline. The R. j. Reynolds family seems to have obliterated any record of J. Edward Johnson and the son she and Johnson had prior to her death. Katharine and Edward Johnson went to New York after they married with the idea that he would learn banking. When the son was born Katharine suffered a setback in her health which led to her death. Since that event the memory and existance of Mr. Johnson and his son has vanished. My curiosity is killing me. What became of them.
