• Okie dokie. Revert away. However, note that the individual team descriptions need to carefully distinguish between election and induction. For example, the Cardinals have had 13 managers elected to the Hall, but only 12 will have been inducted until the 2010 ceremonies. The problem is that individuals are elected several months before actual induction.     • No mistakes—just an issue of definition. I did find an interesting thing when I looked into the Baseball-reference.com manager lists for each team. Herzog is listed as a Hall of Famer by that site even though he hasn't yet been inducted. The main discrepancy that creates in our article is that the statement that "two Hall of Famers" have managed the Royals is accurate right now, but the underlying reference (the Baseball-reference.com list) includes Herzog as a third Hall member, which he won't be until July 25. — Dale Arnett (talk) 01:38, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

Line-ups in the Six Nations articles?

When did we decide that this was a good idea? I think this ought to be discussed somewhere first, before making such a large-scale addition, especially since adding the line-ups for each game will make the article HUGE! – PeeJay 23:13, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

Team lineups removed. The one question I have on this: If it's such a bad idea to have them in a 6N season article, then shouldn't lineups be removed from all articles on each year's June and November Tests? Well, I wasn't going to remove them, as I actually quite like the idea, but I do think it should be discussed. Tbh, I haven't been following rugby articles as much as I used to, mostly because of the Ireland flags issue, so I dunno what the situation is with the June and November Test articles. Basically, my major concern is with the eventual size of the article, since we have 15 matches to do line-ups for, but if the June and November Test articles look OK with the line-ups included, then I don't see why we shouldn't on the Six Nations articles. Tie break in rugby union European nations cup

Well, I THOUGHT that was the situation. I looked further, and apparently the IRB's official site doesn't say that Russia are in. In fact, this story specifically states that Russia needed a win to secure their berth in this round. It may be that head-to-head results aren't used in a tiebreaker in the qualifying procvess. FYI, it turned out I was right all along. The IRB was just slow in updating its own site; it posted Russia's qualification later that day (28 February). The tiebreakers were exactly as I said. However, FYI, it is at 5x expansion, but the "orphan" tag at the top of the article is a problem. See what you can do about de-orphaning the article and then remove the "orphan" template. Conference Standings on 2009–10 NCAA Division I men's basketball season

Dale- Wanted to get your opinion/expertise on something. I get time out errors every time I update CBB season page and have seen others comment taht this happens to them as well. I suspect it may be that the page has gotten too complex with all of the links, templates, etc. Should we cut back the standings or eliminate them? I made an offer to create season pages for each conference after the Final Four, we could house the standings there and just link the season pages from the conference table. What do you think? • I'm getting the same errors you've been getting. I think you may be on to something with respect to the complexity of the page. You have a good idea when it comes to housing standings on the conference season pages, but it's not enough. I think a couple of other sections could be split off into their own pages—(1) coaching changes and (2) conference champions and honors. • Actually, no. The loser of the Copa del Rey final only gets a Europa League place if the winner qualifies for the Champions League. If the winner qualifies for the Europa League through its league position, the cup winner's place does NOT pass to the defeated finalist, but instead goes to the highest-placed team not already qualified for Europe. What this means:
  • If Sevilla wins the Copa del Rey, Atlético would get the cup winner's place only if Sevilla maintain their current fourth-place position and qualify for the Champions League.
  • If Sevilla finishes fifth, Atlético could not earn the extra Europa League place through La Liga because they can't improve on their ninth-place position.

Dale, I am having a problem with an administrator, User:Pats1, who is under the impression that project-wide formatting and standards do not apply to WP:NFL, and seems to be engaged in enforcing his own formatting preferences and possible violations of WP:OWN. I would be grateful if you would watch Fred Taylor (American football) and User talk:Pats1. I believe such information was not previously available on the internet; I spent considerable time and effort as part of the collaborative wiki in writing up these league tables and leagues from RFU yearbooks.

Ohnoitsjamie has also unilaterally decided to ban me from Wikipedia. This means that I am forced to create new accounts in order to speak to you.

In my very humble opinion, these articles were deleted as part of a concerted, petty, vindictive campaign of intimidation against me.

He is hiding behind "G5 bla bla bla" is just an excuse. While I understand that admins might want powers to delete crap that was patent nonsense, blatant vandalism, self promotion, etc, these were legitmate articles legitimately created. He could have done the honourable thing and used his discretion (funny how that link is red btw) but for once recognised good quality work. But no, he chose the dishonourable, petty, vindictive way out which is why I made the reasonable, civil request above.

I thought I might offer my input here: While it may seem nonsensical to have an article deleted for no apparently because of something called G5, this is in fact a part of Wikipedia's policies. G5 says that we don't allow banned/blocked users to contribute, and since you are evading your block to continually try to recreate these articles, you are then violating the policy on sock puppetry. I thank Brambleclawx for his input, but Dale, I'm afraid he's basically missing wrong. OK, there was a decision to delete the perfectly adequate article Hill, Back, Dallaglio at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Hill, Back, Dallaglio (actually I think the voting was some stacking of votes and other votes were simply misguided but I'll deal with that later -- it's not important that right now). But the articles on the Courage League Division Ones? There was no discussion there. ohnoitsjamie (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) took it upon himself to vandalise those articles, and he still has not tried to explain why, hiding behind bureaucracy. Although the policy is no doubt well intentioned, it does permit in circumstances like this, admins to act basically as bullies to satisfy their own egos. He has not used his discretion. The articles were clearly legitimate had anyone else other than me created them. Indeed as I noted to user:Noq, before I was censored, the French language Wikipedia already has such articles. Yet when they were created in the English language Wikipedia -- these is the English leagues remember, they are vandalised by one of their own admins, who happens to know bugger all about rugby (Canada are easily the worst of the former dominions at rugby, having a record of P4 L4 v NZ, P6 L6 v Aus, P2 L2 v SA, P6 L6 v Eng) and is sticking his nose in where he's not welcome.

2010 U.S. Women's Open

I did understand why you listed the U.S. Women's Open qualifiers the way you did. You did it because that's how it has been done on the articles for the Men's U.S. Open. However, I did not believe that replicating a bad article design was a good idea. The format used in the Men's U.S. Open articles is merely copied from the way the USGA displays the qualifiers in their publication. And, while, it may work there, I don't believe it is a format that is easy to understand in the very different context of Wikipedia. 2010 FIBA World Championship rosters

Some guys on their keep editing the names of Greek clubs to the incorrect Greek language form. I have fixed it several times and the keep changing it back and the one guy is getting aggressive about it. They are not adding the English names of the clubs, but the Greek ones. But the clubs officially use the names in English everywhere in the world outside of Greece. For an English website they definitely use the English names, which are the official ones of the club. Like Olympiacos, not Olympiakos. Can you discuss this with those people that keep changing it and explain it to them?74.194.176.82 (talk) 14:27, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

Basketball squad template

Hi there. I just read your message at Template talk:Football squad player. Unfortunately I was on wikibreak at the time, but I was wondering if you were still interested in adapting it for basketball articles? I've coded a prototype, which has an optional |basketball parameter. An example of it in use can be found here (columns are optional, all I did was cut and paste from Watford F.C.)

I notice that WP:BASKETBALL has its own roster template. But at Olympiakos B.C. the football one is still used for roster changes, so it might be worthwhile to do this. Portal: Current events/Sports way too big!!!

I know this has been discussed in the past but with no conclusions. I feel that now we have grown a real monster. The August article ended with 371KB! It takes ages to load and difficult to edit such enormous files! It's nice that people like to contribute more and more news and results, but I think we should find a way to filter the items with a net of bigger holes, if you see what I mean...--Nitsansh (talk) 22:19, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

• I have to agree. I know one thing that was discussed was creating a subportal for North American (US/Canada) sports; maybe it's time to revisit that idea. Also, August is always a busy month because it's the start of Champions League and Europa League qualifiers, not to mention other major soccer competitions. This year, the Youth Olympics sent it up another notch. I think it also might be a good idea to create subportals for specific sports, especially soccer and basketball. — Dale Arnett (talk) 23:39, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

That doesn't explain how the pages have doubled in size from the same months last year. The number of events worthy of reporting on these pages didn't grow that much. SI's MLB all-decade team

Thanks for the great "catch" (excuse the pun), re the starting rotation in the online cite. When I was doing the draft of the article (in or about Jan. 2010), I had based it on the December 28, 2009, print issue of Sports Illustrated, which only had a starting pitcher, relief pitcher, and closer. It did not have a starting rotation. When I finally was ready to convert the draft to an actual Wiki page ( a few months ago), I checked to see if there was an online cite and then added it as a footnote. Unfortunately, I "assumed" that SI's online page would be the same as the Dec. 28 print issue. Obviously I was wrong. Thanks again for spotting that. Eagle4000 (talk) 15:28, 25 October 2010 (UTC)

2010 end of year rugby tests

Hi Dale,

Just to let you know I undid your update on the Spain/Canada match about the blood replacement as it wasn't a blood replacement. A Canadian prop got sin binned on 28th minute. On 34th minute a scrum occurs. As an experienced front row must be on the field when a scrum occurs, Canada's number 8 left the pitch to allow a replacement prop to enter. On 38th minute the sin binned prop re-enters the pitch but as no other scrum occurs until half-time, the replacement prop stays on the pitch and the number 8 stays out. At half time, the other starting prop comes off, being de facto replaced by the replacement prop, and the number 8 rejoins the pitch.

Baseball Hall of Fame websites

Dale, FYI, in your most recent edit to this page, among other things, you updated the date from 2009 to 2010 for the claim "As of 2009, the Eisenhower Tunnel is the highest vehicular tunnel in the United States". The problem is that this sentence is sourced to this page [1], which was last updated in 2009. As such this citation is no longer valid, as it cannot be used to source a claim dated to 2010, being last updated in 2009. Do you have a source for 2010? or should the data be rolled back to 2009 in the article? If you're referring to the statement that Ravenscroft claimed to have originated the story that Holness had performed the sax solo, the BBC story about the Holness urban myth—which is already used as a reference—explicitly states that Ravenscroft made that claim. Black Canadian categories

Hi there, first, let me say that I am an admirer of the fine edits you regularly contribute on Wikipedia. Thank you for your time and effort here, especially on the sports articles. Anyway, my reason for writing is that I am concerned with your addition of the "Black Canadian" categories to articles, which seem to be sometimes based on something other than reliable sources. I am specifically thinking of Joel Anthony. While it may seem like he is Black, I feel that adding any categories based on ethnic, ancestral, religious or other possibly controversial fields are not helpful and should be avoided. • The reason why I froze the players' ages is because this article is specific to the 2011 competition. Squad articles for major championship events in other sports also use frozen ages as of the starting date of the tournament. See, e.g., 2010 FIFA World Cup squads, 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup squads, 2006 FIFA World Cup squads, and so on, as well as 2010 FIBA World Championship squads, 2010 FIBA World Championship for Women squads, and 2009 World Baseball Classic rosters. Thank you for everything you have done for pages relating to college football over the years. 2011 China Floods

Hi Dale, I noticed you added the 2011 Missouri Floods to the sidebar for ongoing events - disasters section So I wondered whether you might consider doing the same for the 2011 China floods article? The article itself needs work - but it's an ongoing event so it will always need work, I've started progressing the article via it's talk page, but I'm a bit out my depth dealing with such a large subject at my limited Wikipedia experience level. So I'd value your feedback both on the article, and on what level of article (stub/start/good etc) an article needs to be before it can be added to the sidebar without people complaining about that action. • My immediate thought is that while the article needs to have a certain level of quality—definitely more than stub—the criteria for inclusion in the sidebar are more related to the magnitude of the event than the quality of the article. I didn't get any feedback, up or down, for adding either the recent Mississippi River floods or the Joplin tornado to the sidebar. The Mississippi River flood was among the largest in American history. By some measures, it was larger than the legendary 1927 flood, the most destructive in the US. • My gut feeling is that I'd go with the individual federation's numbers IF they can be confirmed for each player. By "confirmed", I mean that all caps credited to each player are indeed against full national sides. This can easily be determined for Canada; I suspect the same would apply to the the other countries you named. I'm getting ready to work out and maybe shop a bit... MOS & Links in tables.

Can you please point out to me where in the MOS it indicates that duplicate links can be present in tables? Since I do considerable about of work on Fraternity chapter lists and Fraternity National Convention lists, knowing that I *don't* need to go through and make sure only the first convention in Chicago gets a link to the city would be *very* useful. Also, most of my tables are sortable, so I can't always guarantee that if it is sorted on the host chapter (for example), that the first Chicago in the coding ends up as first in the sorted table...Naraht (talk) 13:29, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

How do you add internal links in an article to another article in wikipedia?

• One more detail I forgot. If there is more than one section of an article with the same heading, add the sequential number of that heading after the title. For example, if there are three sections in an article that have the heading "Foo", link to them as follows:
  • First section "Foo": Article title#Foo (I think "Foo 1" will work as well)
  • Second: Article title#Foo 2
  • Third: Article title#Foo 3

Links to university vs. team

Dale, I saw your edits to you Don Nehlen. You're 100% right about team links in the infobox. That is the standard for Infobox college coach. As for the body of an article, it's a little bit more nuanced. If you're writing "Bowling Green State University" then that should link to Bowling Green State University. If you think a link to Bowling Green Falcons football is more appropriate, then the copy should be changed accordingly. It's not good practice to write "Bowling Green State University" and have that wikilink to Bowling Green Falcons football. That's sloppy and misleading to the reader. My general practice with coaching biographies to start off with mention and a link to a given university, then then work in a link to the team article in the supporting detail. I think it's worth mentioning and linking to university articles in coaching bios because the universities are the organizations that hire and pay the coaches, and the coach's influence tends to extend to the university at large. MSU Interview

Dear Dale Arnett,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. Removing template:cfb link

I noticed your edits to Template:1994 Big West Conference football standings and Template:1978 Division I-A independents football standings. While your efforts to clean up links are appreciated, please refrain from replacing instances of {{cfb link}} with hard-coded links to programs. One of the main reasons for using the cfb link template is to allow the link to convert from one that points to the program/team (Arkansas State Red Hawks football), to one that points to a team season automatically when that article is created (1994 Arkansas State Indians football team). I'm interested in improving the presentation of the membership timelines for the various DI conferences.

I started a draft writeup at User:Sphilbrick/sandbox for latest project

I'd love to hear your feedback on whether this idea has merit, but I'm especially interested in thoughts on where I should present this. I was originally thinking the Wikiproject basketball page, but it has broader impact than just basketball. I tentatively plan to pick one location, then either write up a an RfC, or add notices to various obvious places. Thanks for the alternative WCC timeline. I think I'm going to go ahead and move the proposed timelines into the articles, as enough time for discussion has elapsed. Not all the timelines have the new conferences included, but I think it does add a lot of useful information. I was a little worried it might be too much clutter, but it doesn't seem to be a problem. I'm intrigued about the idea of backfilling, so we can see where each team came form, but I'll leave it to others to tackle that. The main open issue is whether to display the count. I was originally in favor, but agree with the editor who (presumably) thinks it looks clearer without. I plan to add a comment to each timeline, so if individual conferences choose differently, it is easy enough to change the code.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 15:43, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Change in format of Qualified teams on tournament pages

Dale, I'm working my way through the NCAA Women's basketball tournaments, starting with 1982, adding a list of the venues, and maps. I just reached 1998.

You already had added a table of the regional locations, which I replaced using the common format now present in many men's and women's tournament pages.

When I get to the present, if I haven't run out of steam, I plan to start adding lists of Qualified teams, using the format used in 2012 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament. That is, list by region, identifying whether at large or automatic and conference affiliation. I may also add maps of each qualifying team. I also plan to show the summary map identifying how many from each state, although I plan to use a different color scheme.

I'm mentioning this to you, because you added the tables of qualifiers to the 1998, and I would probably simply replace them using the 2012 format. I think this will add useful and interesting information, but I don't want to simply remove your contribution without informing you, in case you aren't a fan of the 2012 formats, and want to discuss.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 15:40, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

I'm glad that you knew there is no Lebanon High School. I was going by multiple bios and press releases that are in large part identical. All said that Inman had been coaching "...at Lebanon HS".

If you knew that one, might you also know in what fields Inman received his bachelors degree from Austin Peay and his masters from Tennessee State? I looked at even more sources without finding those tidbits, including searching both school's websites. Unnecessary piping in

One of the recent edits you made at Major League Baseball in part reverted an edit I'd made to remove some piped links (specifically to Los Angeles Angels and to Minneapolis-St Paul). There was no reason to re-add the piped links, since the unpiped ones redirect to the same articles as the ones for which you added the pipes. (WP:NOTBROKEN) Just pointing it out, I'm not changing it back in the article (also NOTBROKEN) since if I did, it would just take up space storing the article history and not really have any effect on the result of the links. City/state in Kentucky newspaper titles

I moved The Independent (Ashland) and The Times-Tribune (Corbin) back to their previous titles, without "Kentucky" inside the parens. Wikipedia appears to have only one "The Independent" in a town called Ashland, and only one "The Times Tribune" in a town called Corbin, so there's no need to disambiguate further. Wikitravel/WikiVoyage/WMF Travel Guide

I'm assuming you're the same Dale Arnett that has an account at Wikitravel. Just checking to see if you are aware of the proposal to move the travel wiki to Wikimedia due to ongoing issues with the current owner of the Wikitravel site, Internet Brands. There is currently am RfC open asking for people to state their support, opposition, or neutrality regarding the proposal. Also, due to spambot issues, lack of patrolling, among other things, Wikitravel content ceased to be backed up around August 2 (I myself only found out recently). In relation to this, there is a proposal to move the English travel wiki (and possibly other language versions) to WikiVoyage on an interim basis in preparation for a big move to WMF. Help with FIBA Basketball World Cup Yugoslavia/Serbia issue

The FIBA Basketball World Cup and related articles to it keep getting falsely edited to show that Serbia won medals that were actually won by Yugoslavia. This also happens on the article page of Serbian national team. On one of the articles, Russia is also credited with the medals of the Soviet Union. If you try to fix this, someone else just edits it back. The Serbian national team article totally takes credit for medals that are not officially theirs, and you can't edit it to fix it, without it being reverted. Can you help with this? Here are the official records from FIBA --> [5] [6] [7] - the same problem exists at the Serbia and Montenegro national team article, which was even redirected, but FIBA counts it as a separate team --> [8] - and again, FIBA counts Soviet Union and Russia as separate teams, with separate medals, but in some articles Russia is getting credited with those medals, but here is how FIBA counts it ---> [9] [10] - the same problem exists at the articles of individual tournaments, where the wrong teams are listed, trying to credit medals won to countries that don't actually get credited with them, or simply placing the wrong country in the tournament competition. Can you help with this problem? Because no matter how much editing you do to fix it, the edits just get changed back, especially the ones related to the Serbian and Yugoslavian national teams.Bluesangrel (talk) 11:30, 22 August 2012 (UTC)

• Sounds like those pages need to be protected. The level of protection will depend on where the edits are coming from. If they're coming mainly from IP users, then it shouldn't be hard to get semi-protection (i.e., edits allowed only from registered users) approved. 1903-06 Massillon Tigers / Bob Shiring

My great-grandfather, Bob Shiring, played center for the Massillon Tigers from 1903-06. He was from the Pittsburgh area and was one of four "ringers" paid to play by Massillon. He also played for the J.F. Lalus Athletic Club in Pittsburgh in 1899-1900, Homestead Library & Athletic Club in 1901, and Pittsburgh Stars/Pros in 1902. I have inherited a collection of original photos from these teams and and have collected other photos and articles. Sports Illustrated ran a story in the 2/6/12 issue called The First Super Bowl on the big game in 1906 between Canton and Massillon. I helped the writer with the story and SI gave me a photo credit for the picture postcard of the Canton team that I provided them for the article.
