"The Marāthās" is a collective term referring to an Indo-Aryan group of Hindu, Marathi-speaking castes of warriors and peasants, hailing mostly from the Indian state of Maharashtra. They created a substantial empire which covered a major part of India in the 17th and 18th centuries. For more information on the Marathas and their empire, please visit:
The Marathas constituted an extensive and eclectic class of warriors and peasants. Their clan structure may therefore be of interest to sociologists, political scientists, anthropologists and historians. Several lists and taxonomies of the Maratha clan structure are available. One such version is presented here.
Editor's note
It should be noted that the listing of main clans and their sub-clans may differ from book to book. Clans used to change because over time some clans lost their glory, and new ones came into the limelight;for many reasons such as war, foreign invasions. It is a difficult process to identify and prepare a completely correct list of clans. Errors and omission are anticipated. Our good intention should always be kept in mind while reading this article.
Introduction
Every maratha belongs to one of the 96 specific clans. These 96 clans are believed to have originate from five main royal clans which were based on the Panch-Janya or five tribes of the Rig-vedic period. This branching means, for instance, that out of 96 clans, at least 18 clans are septs of the same Yadu clan. This is similar to the branching of the Gotra system from the original seven Saptarshi Gotras to the hundred or more Gotras that exist today.
Marathas are descendants of all 56 Royal houses of India. According to Arya (Hindu) religion, In India or Bharat there are 56 sub-nations. At the time of the civil war of Mahabharata all the Indian nations were badly affected. The Maratha Clan System closely linked with Mahabharat heroes.
As per[Dhanuveda], a standard bow should be of 96 fingers length. In pranayam,96 is length of prana when engaged in warfare. Number 96 is derived from military tradition of ancient Indo-European society. Outside India, Greek PHALANAX was consisting 96 soldiers (12 rows*8 lines). This tradition is continued in Marathas.
96 steps of a water-reservoir in the courtyard of Kamalaja Bhavani temple at Karmala[SOLAPUR] ,built during 16th century represents it.
Origin of Clan system
Apart from Marathas, a well defined clan system is found among Rajputs,Scots,Germanic Tribes and Iranians. These all groups belong to Indo-European speaking population. The cognate of clan is Kul or cul, cognate of shatriya is shah(Iranian), Shah-nav(Maratha), satrap(European). There exists a lot of similarity between names and social customs of these clans during ancient time e.g. Royal symbol of each clan, worship of Fig tree, code of valour and art of fortification. It seems that before compilation of Rigveda, these clans scattered in different directions from their homeland. Generally these all clans have got a long history of chivalry and have enriched their respective countries. It is a matter of research for the sociologists that these clans if even change their religion, did not change their clan system.
D.B.Kasar has shown similarity of Maratha clans with Germanic tribes,Celtic,Nordic etc.
Historic Role
Historically Marathas clans played a major role alongwith other people of India specailly Rajputs,Sikhs and certain southern empires like Vijayanagar in preserving Indian culture and religion .India like China is a civilisation which is almost unbroken. The prime reason no invader was able to wipe out indigeneous Kshatriya clans. As a result the foreign culture could not be imposed save for a few minor pockets which ultimatley broke from India , forming new nations. Following are the empires of whose Marathas are either founders or descendants. Please visit following empires' s pages.
