Difference between antisemitism and racism

Antisemitism has nothing to do with racism since Jews are white, so hating a Jew is not racism. Blacks suffered a lot due to racism and Jews often exploit this name calling despite the suspicion that significant proportion of the slave traders were Jewish. e.g. http://www.rense.com/general69/invo.htm Please mind the difference! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.223.128.111 (talk) 23:59, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please note that rense.com is run by Jeff Rense, and covers "subjects such as UFO reporting, paranormal phenomena, Anti-Zionist conspiracy theories..." - TheMightyQuill (talk) 14:53, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Themightyquill (User talk:Themightyquill). I couldn't divine what Jeff Rense was referring to. Richard David Ramsey 16:49, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

July 2007

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although we invite everyone to contribute constructively to our encyclopedia, at least one of your recent edits, such as the one you made to List of people with Restoration Movement ties, was not constructive and has been reverted or removed. Please use the sandbox for any test edits you would like to make, and take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Action Jackson IV: Can you perhaps specify the reason for the rejection? Ove Johansson indeed did kick the longest field goal (69 yards in Abilene, Texas, in 1976, a record which still stands). After a few years in the NFL he retired to Amarillo, where he is a member of the Church of Christ, one of the groups in the Stone-Campbell Restoration Movement. David

Sweden

Hi there. I reverted the latest edit you made to Sweden. Systembolaget is open on saturdays these days, and the piece about drunk driving needs some references. Hope I did not offend. Cheers --mceder (u t c) 21:17, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not at all offended. I'm impressed that you read my changes in virtual sync with my making them.

My wife, who is Swedish, was over there this summer but stayed entirely "nykter" (sober). So the information I had was anachronistic. The government is out of money and may be pushing the booze to get some "pengar" (money). Additionally we have seen a number of changes to harmonize to EU requirements. I assume that Systembolaget is still closed on election days. I am certain that the smuggling business has continued as usual, now facilitated by the gleaming bridge between Denmark and the "folkhemmet." We take special note of the fact that, when Sweden entered the EU, the few Swedish taxes which were below the EU norm were raised to meet it but the ones which were above stayed there.

Citations

Hello! Thanks for your contributions to Sweden; I hope you stick around. I have one request though: Could you include citations for the material you add? Wikipedia is now strongly encouraging that material be cited from reliable sources, and citing is so much easier when done right at the beginning when material is added. If you're not already familiar with the wikipedia citation styles, WP:CITE has some instructions. I'd be happy to answer any questions about it too. henriktalk 23:26, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Henrik.

I agree with you about the desirability to provide published sources for data not available in the public consciousness, and I'm generally familiar with the Wikipedia style or know where to find advice.

What I added to the article comes from personal experience in the culture as I have been married to it for over 25 years. You are welcome to insert any published sources of which you are aware and certainly to correct or eliminate any misleading phraseology or inaccurate information.

David

Friendly reminder

Edit summary reminder
Hello. I noticed that your edit to USCGC Eagle (WIX-327) did not include an edit summary. Please remember to use one for every edit, even minor ones. You can enable the wiki software to prompt you for one before making an edit by setting your user preferences (under Editing) to "Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary". Thanks, -MBK004 23:14, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Understood. I've made hundreds of edits, most of them summarized. Some of the others hardly qualify as "minor" but are closer to pedantry or nitpicking. But in the future I'll raise the threshold barring use of the minor-edit checkbox without summary. David

What a Brilliant Idea Barnstar
I must say, I am quite impressed by your line of reasoning on the issue of using BC or BCE as you stated on the CoC page. Very palatably convincing. Kudos! standonbibleTalk! 17:51, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In the Bobby Jindal article you inserted a lot of information that was not sourced and that was also your own analysis. Coonass etymology reference needed

Hi, can you provide a reference for the additional information you provided regarding the etymology of "coonass"? Thanks, --Skb8721 (talk) 04:17, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

To establish the equation between cajuns and cajunes, see http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caj%C3%BAn . The transition from cajunes to coonass is not the sort of etymology that easily submits to dignified and written scholarship, but I'll see what I can find. You probably know more about than I do. CODOFIL may have something. Richard David Ramsey 04:46, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
Cajunes is actually related to the Cajun term coullon, the latter meaning a silly or foolish person; it's a relatively benign term (coullon, I mean) despite the anatomical orgin it shares with cajunes.
Frankly, however, I don't think the possible cajunes link regarding "coonass" should be mentioned in the article unless there's a verifiable source. Sincerely, --Skb8721 (talk) 20:10, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, and I have eliminated it until I have a credible and written source. I'm also in South Louisiana. My Swedish wife knew nothing about Louisiana (when she met me) except that it is the origin of Tabasco sauce, a little bottle of it having always stood on her table in Sweden! Thank you for your email, which was forwarded to Musicoast by the Webmaster at www.judithdurham.com.

I am attaching two JPG photographs of Judith Durham, one from 1968, the year The Seekers broke up, and a more recent 2000s photo of Judith performing solo - and this email confirms that I am giving Wikipedia to reproduce them without infringing any copyrights.

I have passed your comments on to Judith and she has asked me to send you her love and best wishes,

Yours truly,

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:Judith - R Whitaker shot 68.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Sdrtirs (talk) 00:23, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re:this edit - in general, it is a bad idea to remove red links. Free speech zone links to Strom Thurmond Jr., as does the article on his father. Therefore, it's probably notable enough to deserve an artilce. By removing red links, you reduce the ability for others to know what articles need to be written. See also Wikipedia:Red_link#Dealing_with_existing_red_links Raul654 (talk) 18:39, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree to a point, Raul654, and do not remove a red link uncritically. When I do remove such a link, I almost always substitute a working link to another Wikipedia domain (preferable) or to a credible domain outside Wikipedia. I will try to restrain that practice.
An additional concern is that frequently an external link simply serves to authenticate the linked item. To insert a red internal link followed by a reference (superscript, note) which merely cites an external link appears a peculiar and cumbersome behavior, heedless of the way a single external link can do both jobs.
If your experienced opinion was to reinsert the red link in the instance you cite, you are certainly welcome to do so. I indeed appreciate your close reading and criticism.
Wikipedia also calls for correct spelling, a behavior we all should consider with respect to situations like artilce.
The philosophy that all red links should become English Wikipedia articles will lead ultimately to a Wikipedia article on every individual who has ever lived. Maybe that's not necessarily a bad idea, but it would certainly occupy and redundify a lot of magnetic room.
Perhaps what is needed is a category for external links which need to be replaced by internal Wikipedia links once the related Wikipedia articles are written and posted. Such a provision would obviate the dilemma of having to choose between a sore-thumb red link and an external link which obscures the need for a Wikipedia article. The provision would also eliminate the attractiveness of the writer's/editor's forming no link whatever (so that there's no redness in the article) in situations where the link would indicate the need for a new article.
Richard David Ramsey 05:05, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

I noticed you're making many changes to this article. In the future, it is advisable to make all your changes at once, either by working on the article in a subpage of yours, or working on the article directly and saving all your changes at once. Making nearly a hundred discrete edits greatly clogs the edit history when you could make all those changes in one edit. Please consider this in the future. Thank you. seresin ( ¡? )  23:26, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Good advice, but I'm not unlike a lot of other editors even if I find some of them just making changes with a priority on racking up as many hits as possible. But the Joseph Cao article is a developing story, with the election going on right now. Otherwise I would try to play more in the sandbox, which is probably a good place for some of the politicos in both Louisiana and New Mexico. Rammer (talk) 23:33, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I created this for you. However as a registered user, do you know you can create categories by yourself? Martin 11:15, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

AfD nomination of John Maginnis (Louisiana political writer)

I have nominated John Maginnis (Louisiana political writer), an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/John Maginnis (Louisiana political writer). Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time. Proposed deletion of Michael Shonrock

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Michael Shonrock, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

Non-notable vice-pres and associate professor, fails WP:ACADEMIC

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. AfD nomination of A. Brooke Bennett

An article that you have been involved in editing, A. Brooke Bennett, has been listed for deletion. If you are interested in the deletion discussion, please participate by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/A. Brooke Bennett. Thank you.

Please contact me if you're unsure why you received this message. DCmacnut<> 00:18, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I just wanted to expand on my reasoning here and at Joseph Cao. Generally, congressional staff aren't considered notable, unless they have distinguished themselves in some other fashion. Ted Kaufman did not receive an article until being appointed Senator, for example. With respect to including congressional staff in articles about a representative, I once proposed including chiefs of staff, legislative directors, etc. in the infoboxes, but other editors at the Project Congress recommended against it for the same reasons I've stated. As far as adding the information back because Brooke Bennett has an article, wikipedia is not considered a reliable source. So just because an article exists somewhere on Wikipedia, it doesn't mean the subject is notable for inclusion elsewhere on wikipedia. Please see WP:Notability for more information. We'd also welcome you to join Project Congress, because we are always looking for new editors willing to help improve the myriad of congressionally-related articles out here.DCmacnut<> 02:05, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You're probably right about Bennett. I'm more concerned to preserve the references. Will take a look at the Cao article later to see whether it can be flexed to meet everyone's wishes. If you delete the Bennett article, please convert the links to her in other articles to external links. On your userpage you indicate that "My interests border on the electic." The word "eclectic" is what you must mean. Rammer (talk) 06:25, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure why we need the references either, unless the references are being used as a source for a different part of the article unrelated to staff members. As far as making external links to Bennett, that would run contrary to WP:External Links against inline external links and overlinking. My arguement is that there is no place to mention Joseph Cao's or any other congressional staff members in any articles, unless that staff member has made a name for him or herself outside of being a staff member or if they became notable as a staff member for other reasons. For example, a Cantwell staffer arrested on child porn charges a few years ago or the intern in Mike DeWine's office that was fired due to a blogging scandal.DCmacnut<> 22:30, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The references have a place in that they are about several matters in Cao's setting up his office. But there are also other scholarly reasons to preserve a bibliographic record. As time goes on and the number of citations grows, Wikipedia cannot be expected to include all of them, but those at the foundation of Cao's congressional career are bedrock and lend credibility which other articles would do well to emulate. Rammer (talk) 17:21, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

(undent) Agreed on the need for adequate sourcing. I just wasn't sure how you wanted to use the references. i.e. as a general source on the hiring of staff or as a source on the hiring of specific staff. I'm okay with the former, but not necessarily the latter.DCmacnut<> 03:19, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The former, but my concern, which is compatible, was to retain the sources. Rammer (talk) 03:24, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Date format on Joseph Cao

Regardless of your opinion on Year Month Day date format, it is not one of the accepted date formats on Wikipedia per MOS:DATE. As I noted in Talk:Joseph Cao#Date format, Wikipedia only uses international (Day Month Year) or American (Month Day, Year) date formats in article text. ISO 8601 date format (YYYY-MM-DD) can be used in references, but with the end of linking dates for autoformatting this format has fallen "out of fashion" so to speak and there are now scripts that will change ISO 8601 format in references to MDY or DMY format. It looks like another editor has reverted your change back to MDY format, so if you want the article to use YMD format, please do so in the discussion I linked above. Thanks! --Bobblehead (rants) 19:31, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree, and I am not alone. There are numerous articles where the first major contributor opted for Julian dates. See, for example, the article on Bruno Hauptman. Why the concern to switch the date format on the Cao article which I have been shepherding all along? Don't most of us have enough to do already? Rammer (talk) 19:40, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

MOS:DATE: "Edit warring over optional styles (such as 14 February and February 14) is unacceptable." -- You're right, edit warring over optional styles is indeed unacceptable, so please stop. The policy page in question is very clear about referring to "the style used by the first major contributor." Rammer, you are indeed one of the first major contributors to this page, but you only decided to change it to the British format after most of the dates in the article had adhered to the American style since at least December 7. I'm going to make one revert, but that's it (I'm not about to have this listed at WP:LAME). However, if you are going to re-revert, please seriously consider what you are edit warring over before you do. Khoikhoi 05:06, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Yes, edit warring is indeed unacceptable, and I was not the one who started the war. During the last 3 months I have devoted many hours to this article. Then abruptly a probably well meaning and intelligent person decided to go through it and change the date format, in some cases getting 2008 and 2009 confused. I'm surely a lousy person and have a lot to learn, but, even amid the absence of a kind word in the criticism of my contributions to the article, I went back through and straightened out that confusion. I am a very busy person and lack the time to engage in repetitions of a pyrrhic skirmish. Anyone who has the time to be interested in it is welcome to read the "Edit summary" reasons, which may or may not have been read before. Julian dates, including with the month spelled in letters for clarity, are spreading worldwide although more slowly in the United States, and even there they are provided for by Microsoft and Dell and required by American Psychological Association (APA) attribution style, the most widely used in scholarly journals. Being heretofore unaware that something like a date format could arouse feelings equivalent to religious intensity, and having more significant matters to deal with—such as family and job—in a world which faces challenges like pollution and genocide, I wish to experience no more time tied up in this late-arriving controversy about date formats on Joseph Cao. Please don't add Category:Louisiana politicians to people who are already in a subcategory such as Category:Members of the Louisiana House of Representatives or Category:New Orleans Councilmembers. A tag has been placed on Katherine Kolb requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. I appreciate the opinion. In the interest of getting "all the nuances across," you IMHO understated the case as much as I had overstated it. Wellhausen was explicit about his quick attraction to the concept that the Jewish law was not what it was cracked up to be. But he is only a pawn on the chessboard of players that the Nazis appropriated for their evil mission: the New Testament, several church councils and Popes, Chrysostom, Ferdinand & Isabella, Luther, Wagner, Nietzsche, the apocryphal Protocols of the Elders of Zion, whatever sources could be wrenched (even out of context) to a purpose aimed at genocide. A corollary was also prevalent—that because Jews were to be perceived (in the Nazi Weltanschauung) as inferior, any source which said as much was deemed credible. Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, adding content without citing a reliable source, as you did to Claude Pepper, is not consistent with our policy of verifiability. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. If you are familiar with Wikipedia:Citing sources, please take this opportunity to add references to the article. Thank you. Donald Albury 10:02, 11 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Caution

Please be careful with your additions. I noticed 2 of your additions today caused text to be incorrectly cited to an existing source in the article, which is inappropriate. In the final change in this diff, you edit makes the claim that the deadlinked article found at historyswomen.com was the source of the content that you added, when in fact the earlier sentence was the source of the content. Your content does not actually have a source listed. This is a major problem, since someone like me may want to challenge your addition as WP:POV. Another one of your additions from this diff make the earlier sentence that I wrote look like it's unreferenced, when in fact your addition is unreferenced. I have added the {{fact}} template to your sentence since it's an unreferenced statistic. Please be careful to not falsely claim that your content comes from an existing source, when in fact an earlier addition is cited and yours is not cited. Royalbroil 03:46, 2 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. Good points. Rammer (talk) 02:25, 3 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have another item of caution for you. In the Carrie Jacobs-Bond article, you have been adding inline external links to youtube videos. First and most important, you cannot legally add links to copyright violations per WP:ELNEVER. Highlighted in the guideline: This is particularly relevant when linking to sites such as YouTube, where due care should be taken to avoid linking to material that violates its creator's copyright. So the only circumstances where you could add a link is if the link was to an article/video/song which was created in the U.S. before 1923. Another allowable link would be if you are certain and can prove that the video/image/article/song is published by the real original author. Second, inline external links are frowned upon. Per the external links guideline: "2. External links should not normally be used in the body of an article. Instead, include appropriate external links in an "External links" section at the end of the article, and in the appropriate location within an infobox, if applicable." I have reverted your recent changes to the article based on the guideline. Royalbroil 03:41, 5 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I appreciate our working together. Rammer (talk) 03:57, 5 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate how you're trying to give good citation on references that you've added. However, you are adding commentary references to the Carrie Jacobs-Bond article (diff). I hope you're will to use the citation templates. They make adding citations real easy. They ensure that the citations that you add are up to Good and Featured Article standards. The easiest way to use them is to click "My Preferences" on the upper right hand side of the screen. Then click "Gadgets" tab on the right. In the "Editing gadgets" section, add a check mark to "REFTOOLS- adds a "cite" button to the editing toolbar for quick and easy addition of commonly used citation templates." Then a new button will appear on the toolbar above the editing that says {{CITE}}. Position the insert point where you want to add the citation, then click the button. Select web, news, or book to add a new reference. Fill in the fields. If you want to use that same reference a second time in the article, make sure you add a "Reference name". The following times that you want use that same name, click the "named references" button and select the reference's name from the group. I hope this is helpful. Retain. People rely on Wikipedia for information. Government officials should not be in charge of approving or disapproving what people choose to do within the law, and Wikipedia editors should not be in charge of denying information to people who are seeking it. The Deletion Policy is well thought out and articulated. Yesterday it might have applied to this situation. Today it doesn't. Your concern has been mooted by a market issue, demand. Rammer (talk) 22:28, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Keith Bardwell

You appear to be fabricating claims that Bardwell has paraplegia, was born with no knees, walks on his thighs, etc. I Googled "Keith Bardwell paraplegia" to see if this was really true, and the only meaningful results I could find were the two articles (Keith Bardwell and List of paraplegic people) that you had added these claims to. Not only that, but Bardwell is also a carpenter and I don't think that there are very many (if any) paraplegic carpenters out there. Therefore, it looks like you are making these claims up.

In addition to being dishonest, this is a blatant violation of WP: BLP. Just because you personally dislike him and his views (as I also do) does not mean you can make statements like that without any evidence. The sources you have been using to "back up" these claims, in fact, make no such statements about Bardwell's health. It undermines the integrity of Wikipedia when people use it for that kind of childish name-calling. Stick to the facts, please. Stonemason89 (talk) 10:11, 17 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

He is paraplegic, an observation made with no value-judgment whatever. Wikipedia is to convey the facts, not editorials. Why do you think someone is engaging in "childish name-calling" by conveying the disabilities which the subject has congenitally and manages to overcome in the world of work? Another editor wants to know more of Bardwell's biography; yet, when someone includes biographical information, another editor eschews it. Bardwell, incidentally, has an excellent reputation as a cabinetmaker, and he overcomes the handicap in doing that job. Please come out from behind your anonymous username. I live within 10 miles of Bardwell and know his demographics, which were conveyed in honesty and fidelity to the facts. Rammer (talk) 20:14, 17 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
So? You say that you know he is paraplegic because you know him personally. That is not acceptable for additions to Wikipedia articles, as it violates WP: OR. And don't accuse my of being insensitive to people with disabilities. I have a disability. But I am also quite well aware that all too many Americans, even in this day and age, tend to use disabilities as insults. Witness the all-too-frequent usage of the slur "retard" (the R-word), as many of us like to call it), or spaz, crip, et cetera, as generic insults in American culture. I still don't believe he is really paraplegic. If he is, how come none of the over 1,000 news articles that have mentioned him in the past 2-3 days have mentioned the fact? Stonemason89 (talk) 20:20, 17 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That's a very good question--why the media don't mention it. Yes, I know the WP rule and comprehend the benefit of keeping WP strictly in the arena of secondary research. His paraplegia is part of his biography and has no causal relationship to the event which put him into the news. I didn't "accuse" you "of being insensitive to people with disabilities," and you should not have alleged that I am "dishonest" or engaging in "childish name-calling." Let's put all that behind us and try to improve the article. Do you have a way to get someone in the media to comment more biographically and descriptively on Bardwell? Rammer (talk) 20:32, 17 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm curious for real, and don't mean to sound sarcastic at all; is Keith Bardwell really paraplegic? I can imagine if he uses a wheelchair, but he walks around on his thighs, and has no feet, legs, or knees? When did he enter the carpenting profession? I guess that's his trade? --rock8591 01:26, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your inquiry. I understand from some of the locals that Keith Bardwell makes cabinets (cupboards). I don't know how long he has been in that business except that it has been a very long time, many years. Yes, he is paraplegic and walks on his thighs, uses a wheelchair, and drives a vehicle equipped with hand controls; but I concurred with others to withdraw all that information until it is confirmed by a primary published source. I anticipate that that will possibly happen before too long. Rammer (talk) 02:29, 19 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. At last count (I read the deletion discussion yesterday) there were more votes to keep than to delete although several voters on both sides recommended renaming the article so as to emphasize the incident instead of the man. Consequently I created a REDIRECT called "Bardwell incident" which could be populated as the main article. You're right to warn against petitioning the gatekeeper, because the evidence so far has been that democracy is not necessarily considered welcome or even desirable. Nonetheless, wiking the article out entirely is not a reasonable alternative. Writers whose legitimacy is above reproach had dedicated many hours to creation of an article which thousands of readers were finding useful. It was the one source on the 'net where people could find a dispassionate attempt to contextualize the situation and to provide more information than just what the man did and how he is horrible. There was good reason for renaming the article but no good reason for deleting its substance. Rammer (talk) 16:10, 23 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Wikipedia Ambassador Program is currently looking for Campus Ambassadors to help with Wikipedia assignments at Louisiana State University, which will be participating in the Public Policy Initiative for the Spring 2011 semester. This includes doing in-class presentations, running workshops and labs, possibly holding office hours, and in general providing in-person mentorship for students.

Prior Wikipedia skills are not required for the role, as training will be provided for all Campus Ambassadors (although, of course, being an experienced editor is a plus).

If you live near Baton Rouge and you are interested in being a Wikipedia Campus Ambassador, or know someone else from the area who might be, please email me or leave a message on my talk page.--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 17:14, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your support! If you think you'd like to help bring the Wikipedia Ambassador Program to Southeastern Louisiana University for some later term, I encourage you to apply to be a Campus Ambassador... either now (we'll probably have a training event in Baton Rouge in early January) or later on. Then you can keep an eye on things as they develop, and maybe take the lead at SLU at a time when you have more time for it. WP:USERNOCAT

Dear Richard. I have removed a number of categories from your user and user talk pages. These categories are suitable for articles and article talk pages only, as described at WP:USERNOCAT. Thanks. Rockpocket 00:23, 4 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Whatever. I use my middle name, David. Rammer (talk) 05:01, 4 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Semicolons and emphasis

Hello. Whilst I very much support your efforts to encourage the correct use of the semicolon, I do not understand why adding bold to them, like this and this, would be a good idea. I don't think that adding the bold is helpful: surely an informative edit summary would suffice? Thanks and best wishes, DBaK (talk) 23:19, 17 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't want semicolons to look like commas. Otherwise I agree with you. Maybe, where possible, the preference would be to use periods (full stops). The main problem, however, is to rid the encyclopedia of comma splices. Periods and commas are never interchangeable. Why someone intelligent enough and informed enough to write an article cannot identify a sentence and punctuate it as such is a mystery. Rammer (talk) 23:27, 17 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for the nice reply. I think I understand your point but I don't think that adopting a personal typographic convention will stick - not unless you want to try to get it adopted as part of the MoS! I do love to see semicolons and colons properly used so I'd be a bit sad to see them replaced by full stops. As for the mystery of people who know enough to write but not enough to write well - yes, it's sad, but I suppose that's why we have subeditors, wikipedia punctuation nerds, and the like. I saw an article today, about a railway station in England, which I think would have made you feel quite unwell. It consisted of good information with horrible presentation: I feel as if I'll need a day off before I look at it again. Oh well ... and thanks again for the reply. Best wishes DBaK (talk) 22:29, 18 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of Sohaib Athar for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Sohaib Athar is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sohaib Athar until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on good quality evidence, and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. – Muboshgu (talk) 22:53, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Alas! Hereby I make the first (personal) comment on the user page of the guy who started the wikipedia article about the guy who happened to be online when Osama bin Laden was killed. Can I get a WP page now too? -- 09:07, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
Fine with me, if you happened to appear on every television screen in the world. Rammer (talk) 16:18, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Mr. Ramsey, for writing me. I'm starting to think that perhaps the article Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sohaib Athar should be deleted and have that content rolled into Death of Osama bin Laden. Kindest respects: AdjustablePliers (talk) 22:50, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The Sohaib Athar article had 263 hits on May 2 and 16862 hits on May 3. I'm aware that the number of hits is not a criterion for inclusion. Nonetheless, Wikipedia has done the service of making the information available to a lot of people who, for some reason important to them, are seeking it. Re: Genaro Codina

Hola Richard.

Okay, Laura. I have decided to agree with you. I may be wrong, but it seems that the "Zacatecas March" was Codino's one stunning work, such that, even though he composed other works, he almost becomes a flash in the pan. There are four images related to him in Wikimedia Commons, plus others on the internet although I'm not sure whether all of them are legally available. Just merge everything toward the article about the march itself. Rammer (talk) 02:13, 31 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on File:Stanton Jacobs-Bond Spencer Just Awearyin 1911 cusb-cyl3824d.ogg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 12:17, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Standby. Sfan00 IMG, can you update me on what the situation is there? Maybe I'm missing something or not looking in the right place, but I see no deletion tag. Additionally, the file works. Nonetheless, if you can remove it from Wikipedia so that it remains just on Wikimedia Commons, then that action makes sense. The song itself is in several Wikipedia articles, and we only have to be careful that they all link directly to the file in Commons without any need for a page containing the file in Wikipedia per se. Rammer (talk) 15:22, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Already resolved, If all the links are named the same, the image from Commons should show through without intervention:) Sfan00 IMG (talk) 18:54, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good to me. Let's see what happens. Rammer (talk) 19:39, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Fred Luter

It is probably easiest to upload a derivative file onto Commons. I had thought about cropping it, and then having the cropped picture in the infobox, and the full picture lower down in the article. StAnselm (talk) 04:13, 26 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I cannot get DerivativeFX to work. But the idea is still that the photograph needs brightening. I don't think cropping will help much or even at all, including to display just Luter himself. The current group photo is fine because of the famous company Luter is in there, but we really need a better portrait of Luter. Rammer (talk) 15:22, 26 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Waltzer & Associates requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Nearer, My God

It doesn't matter what I think. What you wrote was WP:OR, which is prohibited in Wikipedia. If you wish to dispute what is currently in an article, you need to find a more authoritative source that states what you are asserting. WP:OR is one of the key content policies of Wikipedia. -- Ssilvers (talk) 19:10, 5 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Quotations from an existing source are not original research. Yes, I know the prohibition. I merely clarified what the article already asserts about Genesis 28:11-19. I did not "dispute" anything, nor will I continue to edit that article. Rammer (talk) 05:15, 6 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Are you sure that Lowell Mason's tune BETHANY has yet to make such serious inroads into the British repertoire as to threaten the indigenous British tunes? This statement is supported by a source from 1898 (a long time ago):

In the United Kingdom, the hymn is usually associated with the 1861 hymn tune "Horbury" by John Bacchus Dykes, named for a village near Wakefield, England, where Dykes had found "peace and comfort". -- Rammer (talk) 05:38, 6 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have a more recent source that states which tune is the most popular in Britain in recent decades? -- Ssilvers (talk) 06:07, 6 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ian Bradley in the Daily Telegraph Book of Hymns as of 2006 indicates HORBURY as the dominant tune in the U.K. (with the others in the WP article as alternatives) and BETHANY as the sole tune in the U.S., but I will try to do more checking on the British situation with an informed source on the scene. Rammer (talk) 23:16, 6 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. What page does he say that on? -- Ssilvers (talk) 03:35, 7 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Bradley, Ian (2006). Daily Telegraph book of hymns. London: Bloomsbury Academic. p. 294. ISBN-10 = 0826482821, ISBN-13 = 978-0826482822. That's the paperback edition. The hardbound edition was published in 2005. Here's a quotation from Bradley on p. 294:
Perhaps the best-known tune for the hymn, at least in Britain, is Horbury, which John Bacchus Dykes (1823-76) wrote for the first edition of Hymns Ancient and Modern in 1861. He named it after the town in Yorkshire which he had visited two years earlier to make his first confession. In the USA the tune most often used has been Bethany, which was composed in 1856 by Dr Lowell Mason (1792-1872), a bank clerk from Savannah who founded the Boston Academy of Music.

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a search with the contents of John Hughes (1973-1932), and it appears to be very similar to another Wikipedia page: John Hughes (composer). It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case. If you are intentionally trying to rename an article, please see Help:Moving a page for instructions on how to do this without copying and pasting. If you are trying to move or copy content from one article to a different one, please see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia and be sure you have acknowledged the duplication of material in an edit summary to preserve attribution history.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. CorenSearchBot (talk) 20:50, 17 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Useless eaters

Hi there, Richard David Ramsey. Is the reason you redirected the phrase useless eaters to Der Giftpilz because the phrase was coined in that book? Jonas Vinther (talk) 18:52, 8 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure, Jonas Vinther. I have forgotten what happened with that redirect. The term "useless eaters" is nonetheless associated with Julius Streicher as an epithet he used against Jews. But didn't he use that expression before publication of Der Giftpliz? I'll be interested in your response, and I think maybe your knowledge may be more eclectic than mine. Rammer (talk) 20:33, 8 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well, according to Laurence Rees, Hitler and the top Nazi chieftains coined the phrase "useless eaters" to describe the Jews. I haven't read Der Giftpliz nor do I know anything in particular about Streicher. I was wondering if the phrase itself would deserve an article? Jonas Vinther (talk) 20:52, 8 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I can see that the expression "useless eaters" has had referents broader than just the Jews in the Third Reich. See http://rense.com/general78/philo.htm . That's an article I cannot necessarily recommend, but it does provide indication of a wider meaning of the "useless eaters" term. Rammer (talk) 21:24, 8 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Diego Mendez listed at Redirects for discussion

An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect Diego Mendez. Since you had some involvement with the Diego Mendez redirect, you might want to participate in the redirect discussion if you have not already done so. BDD (talk) 18:55, 19 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Keep. BDD: You are impressively fastidious to raise such a question, but you worry too much. If the current mention of Diego Mendez is all that Wikipedia has, then the redirect is critical to help readers use what there is. The alternative is to write a self-standing article on Diego Mendez. Embedding his information into the article on Columbus and providing a redirect for individuals who seek information on Mendez alone is the best compromise, the best alternative. Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Richard Lloyd (religious leader) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, images, a rephrasing of the title, a question that should have been asked at the help or reference desks, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". After your last edit to the article, there are still 11 junctions listed in the infobox. In the case of long highways with many important junctions, it is often necessary to omit all but interstates and U.S. highways. See New York State Route 22, assessed as a Featured Article by WP:USRD, for an example of this. The fact that LA 21 and LA 25 are federal aid routes does not mean they should be included because US 51 is not. It's about the route class. That said, I see that LA 21 is part of the National Highway System so I'll retain that one as it still keeps the number of junctions at 10. Britinvasion64 (talk) 22:31, 8 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your nice explanation, Britinvasion64. I agree with you thus far and appreciate that you are educating me. I would only point out that LA 25 is a designated hurricane evacuation route. US 51 isn't. Furthermore, US 51 has become essentially a street connecting the towns in Tangipahoa Parish, but the traffic on it is mostly drivers going a short distance. Late in the evenings, the traffic signals at the junction of US 51 and LA 16 in downtown Amite (Amite City) blink red to 51 and green to 16 because of traffic counts. US 51 runs parallel to I-55 except in some cases of concurrence. US 51 long ago lost its strategic significance down here and is now a Federal Aid Secondary except in cases of concurrence with I-55. No need exists in the LA 10 box to indicate both I-55 and US 51. If I were you, I would drop US 51 from the list there and instead list LA 25. I realize the psychology that US-numbered routes somehow have pre-eminence over state routes, but I live in the area and vouch that LA 25 is nowadays more significant that US 51. Please give these observations some thought. Again, thanks for the civility of your explanation. Rammer (talk) 23:14, 9 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You bring up some good points. It's hard sometimes juggling the rules vs. what makes sense in a particular situation. (I'm trying to get some of these LA highway articles assessed as Good Articles soon.) I just didn't want to start a domino effect where if you include this one, now you have to include that one, etc. But I think I have a solution that will work for everyone. I combined each concurrency to a single line, freeing up room for LA 25 and two other state highways along the route I felt were notable as well. What do you think? Britinvasion64 (talk) 00:36, 11 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Britinvasion64, really nice. I agree with you. My earlier observation had to do with the eastern part of the Florida Parishes, but in retrospect I know that LA 13 is an important and highly trafficked road, and you apparently realized that LA 1 together with LA 10 forms the potentially forthcoming Zachary Taylor Parkway. Indeed, the Audubon Bridge which bears LA 10 over the Mississippi River is the only such bridge between Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Natchez, Mississippi; thus LA 1, just west of the Bridge, is one of the more significant junctions for LA 10. Again, I appreciate the civility of your response and indeed will defer to you to decide about such issues in that article. Rammer (talk) 01:58, 11 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
As you, Britinvasion64, are no doubt well aware, almost all state highways in Louisiana were renumbered in 1955. The current routings are in many instances just a cobbling together (look, e.g., at LA 16, hardly the route a sane person would take between its termini), but it was a definite improvement over the prior chaos, which, among other anomalies, included road numbers that abruptly changed in the middle of nowhere. Rammer (talk) 04:53, 12 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
